वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स मित्रसहमासाद्य त्वभिज्ञानमयाचत ।
तस्मै ददावभिज्ञानं स चेक्ष्वाकुवरस्तदा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa mitrasahamāsādya tvabhijñānamayācata ,
tasmai dadāvabhijñānaṁ sa cekṣvākuvarastadā.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having approached Mitrasaha, he asked for the token of recognition (abhijñāna). And that best of Ikṣvākus then gave the token of recognition to him.
सौदास उवाच ।
न चैवैषा गतिः क्षेम्या न चान्या विद्यते गतिः ।
एतन्मे मतमाज्ञाय प्रयच्छ मणिकुण्डले ॥२॥
2. saudāsa uvāca ,
na caivaiṣā gatiḥ kṣemyā na cānyā vidyate gatiḥ ,
etanme matamājñāya prayaccha maṇikuṇḍale.
2. saudāsa uvāca na ca eva eṣā gatiḥ kṣemyā na ca anyā
vidyate gatiḥ | etat me matam ājñāya prayaccha maṇikuṇḍale

2. Saudāsa said: This course of action is certainly not safe, and no other course is available. Therefore, having understood this opinion of mine, give me the jewel earrings.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तस्तामुत्तङ्कस्तु भर्तुर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ।
श्रुत्वा च सा ततः प्रादात्तस्मै ते मणिकुण्डले ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktastāmuttaṅkastu bharturvākyamathābravīt ,
śrutvā ca sā tataḥ prādāttasmai te maṇikuṇḍale.
3. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktaḥ tām uttaṅkaḥ tu bhartuḥ vākyam
atha abravīt śrutvā ca sā tataḥ prādāt tasmai te maṇikuṇḍale

3. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed, Uttanka then conveyed his master's command to her. And she, having heard, then gave those jeweled earrings to him.
अवाप्य कुण्डले ते तु राजानं पुनरब्रवीत् ।
किमेतद्गुह्यवचनं श्रोतुमिच्छामि पार्थिव ॥४॥
4. avāpya kuṇḍale te tu rājānaṁ punarabravīt ,
kimetadguhyavacanaṁ śrotumicchāmi pārthiva.
4. avāpya kuṇḍale te tu rājānam punaḥ abravīt kim
etat guhyam vacanam śrotum icchāmi pārthiva
4. uttankaḥ tu te kuṇḍale avāpya rājānam punaḥ abravīt he pārthiva,

4. But having obtained those two earrings, he again spoke to the king: "O King, what is this secret statement? I wish to hear it."
सौदास उवाच ।
प्रजा निसर्गाद्विप्रान्वै क्षत्रियाः पूजयन्ति ह ।
विप्रेभ्यश्चापि बहवो दोषाः प्रादुर्भवन्ति नः ॥५॥
5. saudāsa uvāca ,
prajā nisargādviprānvai kṣatriyāḥ pūjayanti ha ,
viprebhyaścāpi bahavo doṣāḥ prādurbhavanti naḥ.
5. saudāsaḥ uvāca prajā nisargāt viprān vai kṣatriyāḥ pūjayanti
ha viprebhyaḥ ca api bahavaḥ doṣāḥ prādurbhavanti naḥ
5. saudāsaḥ uvāca ha,
kṣatriyāḥ prajāḥ nisargāt vai viprān pūjayanti ca api viprebhyaḥ naḥ bahavaḥ doṣāḥ prādurbhavanti
5. Saudāsa said: "By nature, the people, particularly kshatriyas, indeed revere the brahmins (vipra). Yet, many faults also arise for us from these very brahmins (vipra)."
सोऽहं द्विजेभ्यः प्रणतो विप्राद्दोषमवाप्तवान् ।
गतिमन्यां न पश्यामि मदयन्तीसहायवान् ।
स्वर्गद्वारस्य गमने स्थाने चेह द्विजोत्तम ॥६॥
6. so'haṁ dvijebhyaḥ praṇato viprāddoṣamavāptavān ,
gatimanyāṁ na paśyāmi madayantīsahāyavān ,
svargadvārasya gamane sthāne ceha dvijottama.
6. saḥ aham dvijebhyaḥ praṇataḥ viprāt
doṣam avāptavān gatim anyām na
paśyāmi madayantī sahāyavān svargadvārasya
gamane sthāne ca iha dvijottama
6. saḥ aham dvijebhyaḥ praṇataḥ viprāt doṣam avāptavān madayantī sahāyavān [aham] anyām gatim na paśyāmi ca iha svargadvārasya gamane sthāne,
he dvijottama
6. "I, who bowed to the brahmins (dvija), have nevertheless incurred a fault from a brahmin (vipra). Having Madayantī as my companion, I see no other recourse, O best of brahmins (dvija), here in this place, on the way to the gate of heaven."
न हि राज्ञा विशेषेण विरुद्धेन द्विजातिभिः ।
शक्यं नृलोके संस्थातुं प्रेत्य वा सुखमेधितुम् ॥७॥
7. na hi rājñā viśeṣeṇa viruddhena dvijātibhiḥ ,
śakyaṁ nṛloke saṁsthātuṁ pretya vā sukhamedhitum.
7. na hi rājñā viśeṣeṇa viruddhena dvijātibhiḥ
śakyam nṛloke saṃsthātum pretya vā sukham edhitum
7. hi rājñā viśeṣeṇa dvijātibhiḥ viruddhena nṛloke
saṃsthātum vā pretya sukham edhitum na śakyam
7. Indeed, it is not possible for a king, especially one who is opposed by the twice-born (dvijas), to remain established in the human world or to attain happiness in the afterlife.
तदिष्टे ते मयैवैते दत्ते स्वे मणिकुण्डले ।
यः कृतस्तेऽद्य समयः सफलं तं कुरुष्व मे ॥८॥
8. tadiṣṭe te mayaivaite datte sve maṇikuṇḍale ,
yaḥ kṛtaste'dya samayaḥ saphalaṁ taṁ kuruṣva me.
8. tat iṣṭe te mayā eva ete datte sve maṇikuṇḍale
yaḥ kṛtaḥ te adya samayaḥ saphalam tam kuruṣva me
8. tat mayā eva ete sve iṣṭe maṇikuṇḍale te datte
yaḥ samayaḥ adya te kṛtaḥ tam me saphalam kuruṣva
8. Therefore, these two jeweled earrings, my own valued possessions, are given by me to you. The agreement (samaya) you made today, make it fruitful for me.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
राजंस्तथेह कर्तास्मि पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम् ।
प्रश्नं तु कंचित्प्रष्टुं त्वां व्यवसिष्ये परंतप ॥९॥
9. uttaṅka uvāca ,
rājaṁstatheha kartāsmi punareṣyāmi te vaśam ,
praśnaṁ tu kaṁcitpraṣṭuṁ tvāṁ vyavasiṣye paraṁtapa.
9. uttaṅka uvāca rājan tathā iha kartā asmi punaḥ eṣyāmi te
vaśam praśnam tu kaṃcit praṣṭum tvām vyavasiṣye paraṃtapa
9. uttaṅka uvāca rājan iha tathā kartā asmi,
punaḥ te vaśam eṣyāmi tu paraṃtapa tvām kaṃcit praśnam praṣṭum vyavasiṣye
9. Uttanka said: 'O King, I shall act accordingly here, and I will return to your command. But, O scorcher of foes, I intend to ask you a certain question.'
सौदास उवाच ।
ब्रूहि विप्र यथाकामं प्रतिवक्तास्मि ते वचः ।
छेत्तास्मि संशयं तेऽद्य न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१०॥
10. saudāsa uvāca ,
brūhi vipra yathākāmaṁ prativaktāsmi te vacaḥ ,
chettāsmi saṁśayaṁ te'dya na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
10. saudāsa uvāca brūhi vipra yathākāmam prativaktā asmi te
vacaḥ chettā asmi saṃśayam te adya na me atra asti vicāraṇā
10. saudāsa uvāca vipra yathākāmam brūhi! te vacaḥ prativaktā
asmi te saṃśayam adya chettā asmi atra me vicāraṇā na asti
10. Saudasa said: 'Speak, O Brahmin, as you desire! I will answer your question and remove your doubt today. There is no hesitation for me in this matter.'
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
प्राहुर्वाक्संगतं मित्रं धर्मनैपुण्यदर्शिनः ।
मित्रेषु यश्च विषमः स्तेन इत्येव तं विदुः ॥११॥
11. uttaṅka uvāca ,
prāhurvāksaṁgataṁ mitraṁ dharmanaipuṇyadarśinaḥ ,
mitreṣu yaśca viṣamaḥ stena ityeva taṁ viduḥ.
11. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca pra āhuḥ vāk saṃgatam mitram dharma naipuṇya
darśinaḥ mitreṣu yaḥ ca viṣamaḥ stenaḥ iti eva tam viduḥ
11. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca dharma naipuṇya
darśinaḥ vāk saṃgatam mitram
pra āhuḥ ca yaḥ mitreṣu viṣamaḥ
asti tam eva stenaḥ iti viduḥ
11. Uttanka said: Those who discern the subtleties of righteousness (dharma) declare that a friend is one whose speech is consistent (with their actions). And whoever behaves unevenly or deceitfully among friends, they indeed know him to be a thief.
स भवान्मित्रतामद्य संप्राप्तो मम पार्थिव ।
स मे बुद्धिं प्रयच्छस्व समां बुद्धिमतां वर ॥१२॥
12. sa bhavānmitratāmadya saṁprāpto mama pārthiva ,
sa me buddhiṁ prayacchasva samāṁ buddhimatāṁ vara.
12. saḥ bhavān mitratām adya samprāptaḥ mama pārthiva
saḥ me buddhim prayacchasva samām buddhimatām vara
12. pārthiva saḥ bhavān adya mama mitratām samprāptaḥ he
buddhimatām vara saḥ me samām buddhim prayacchasva
12. O King (pārthiva), you have now attained my friendship. Therefore, O best among the wise, please grant me an impartial (samām) understanding (buddhi).
अवाप्तार्थोऽहमद्येह भवांश्च पुरुषादकः ।
भवत्सकाशमागन्तुं क्षमं मम न वेति वा ॥१३॥
13. avāptārtho'hamadyeha bhavāṁśca puruṣādakaḥ ,
bhavatsakāśamāgantuṁ kṣamaṁ mama na veti vā.
13. avāpta arthaḥ aham adya iha bhavān ca puruṣa adakaḥ
bhavat sakāśam āgantum kṣamam mama na vā iti
13. adya iha aham avāpta arthaḥ ca bhavān puruṣa adakaḥ
mama bhavat sakāśam āgantum kṣamam vā na iti
13. I have accomplished my objective here today, and you are a man-eater. Is it appropriate for me to approach your presence, or not?
सौदास उवाच ।
क्षमं चेदिह वक्तव्यं मया द्विजवरोत्तम ।
मत्समीपं द्विजश्रेष्ठ नागन्तव्यं कथंचन ॥१४॥
14. saudāsa uvāca ,
kṣamaṁ cediha vaktavyaṁ mayā dvijavarottama ,
matsamīpaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha nāgantavyaṁ kathaṁcana.
14. saudāsaḥ uvāca kṣamam cet iha vaktavyam mayā dvija vara
uttama mat samīpam dvija śreṣṭha na āgantavyam kathaṃcana
14. saudāsaḥ uvāca cet iha mayā kṣamam vaktavyam he dvijavarottama
he dvijaśreṣṭha kathaṃcana mat samīpam na āgantavyam
14. Saudasa said: If it is appropriate for me to speak here, O most excellent among brahmins, then, O best of brahmins, you must not come near me under any circumstances.
एवं तव प्रपश्यामि श्रेयो भृगुकुलोद्वह ।
आगच्छतो हि ते विप्र भवेन्मृत्युरसंशयम् ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ tava prapaśyāmi śreyo bhṛgukulodvaha ,
āgacchato hi te vipra bhavenmṛtyurasaṁśayam.
15. evam tava prapaśyāmi śreyaḥ bhṛgukulodvaha
āgacchataḥ hi te vipra bhavet mṛtyuḥ asaṃśayam
15. bhṛgukulodvaha vipra evam tava śreyaḥ prapaśyāmi
hi āgacchataḥ te mṛtyuḥ asaṃśayam bhavet
15. O scion of the Bhrigu family, I clearly see what is best for you in this situation. Indeed, O Brahmin, if you proceed, death will undoubtedly befall you.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स तदा राज्ञा क्षमं बुद्धिमता हितम् ।
समनुज्ञाप्य राजानमहल्यां प्रति जग्मिवान् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa tadā rājñā kṣamaṁ buddhimatā hitam ,
samanujñāpya rājānamahalyāṁ prati jagmivān.
16. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā rājñā kṣamam
buddhimatā hitam samanujñāpya rājānam ahalyām prati jagmyivān
16. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tadā buddhimatā rājñā kṣamam hitam
iti uktaḥ saḥ rājānam samanujñāpya ahalyām prati jagmyivān
16. Vaiśampayana said: Thus addressed then by the wise king with fitting and beneficial words, he took leave of the king and departed towards Ahalya.
गृहीत्वा कुण्डले दिव्ये गुरुपत्न्याः प्रियंकरः ।
जवेन महता प्रायाद्गौतमस्याश्रमं प्रति ॥१७॥
17. gṛhītvā kuṇḍale divye gurupatnyāḥ priyaṁkaraḥ ,
javena mahatā prāyādgautamasyāśramaṁ prati.
17. gṛhītvā kuṇḍale divye gurupatnyāḥ priyaṃkaraḥ
javena mahatā prāyāt gautamasya āśramam prati
17. gurupatnyāḥ priyaṃkaraḥ divye kuṇḍale gṛhītvā
mahatā javena gautamasya āśramam prati prāyāt
17. Pleasing to the guru's wife, he took her two divine earrings and departed with great speed towards Gautama's hermitage (āśrama).
यथा तयो रक्षणं च मदयन्त्याभिभाषितम् ।
तथा ते कुण्डले बद्ध्वा तथा कृष्णाजिनेऽनयत् ॥१८॥
18. yathā tayo rakṣaṇaṁ ca madayantyābhibhāṣitam ,
tathā te kuṇḍale baddhvā tathā kṛṣṇājine'nayat.
18. yathā tayoḥ rakṣaṇam ca madayantyā abhibhāṣitam
tathā te kuṇḍale baddhvā tathā kṛṣṇājine anayat
18. yathā madayantyā tayoḥ rakṣaṇam ca abhibhāṣitam
tathā te kuṇḍale kṛṣṇājine baddhvā anayat
18. Following Madayantī's instructions regarding the protection of those two, he bound the earrings to a black antelope skin and carried them.
स कस्मिंश्चित्क्षुधाविष्टः फलभारसमन्वितम् ।
बिल्वं ददर्श कस्मिंश्चिदारुरोह क्षुधान्वितः ॥१९॥
19. sa kasmiṁścitkṣudhāviṣṭaḥ phalabhārasamanvitam ,
bilvaṁ dadarśa kasmiṁścidāruroha kṣudhānvitaḥ.
19. saḥ kasmin-cit kṣudhā-āviṣṭaḥ phala-bhāra-samanvitam
bilvam dadarśa kasmin-cit āruroha kṣudhā-anvitaḥ
19. saḥ kṣudhā-āviṣṭaḥ kasmin-cit phala-bhāra-samanvitam
bilvam dadarśa (saḥ) kṣudhā-anvitaḥ kasmin-cit āruroha
19. Being afflicted by hunger, he saw a bilva tree somewhere, laden with fruit. Driven by hunger, he then climbed it.
शाखास्वासज्य तस्यैव कृष्णाजिनमरिंदम ।
यस्मिंस्ते कुण्डले बद्धे तदा द्विजवरेण वै ॥२०॥
20. śākhāsvāsajya tasyaiva kṛṣṇājinamariṁdama ,
yasmiṁste kuṇḍale baddhe tadā dvijavareṇa vai.
20. śākhāsu āsajya tasya eva kṛṣṇa-ajinam arim-dama
yasmin te kuṇḍale baddhe tadā dvija-vareṇa vai
20. arim-dama,
(saḥ) tasya eva śākhāsu kṛṣṇa-ajinam āsajya,
yasmin te kuṇḍale dvija-vareṇa vai tadā baddhe
20. O subduer of enemies (arim-dama), he hung his black deerskin (kṛṣṇājina) on the branches of that very tree. Indeed, in that deerskin (kṛṣṇājina), those two earrings had been tied by the revered brahmin (dvija).
विशीर्णबन्धने तस्मिन्गते कृष्णाजिने महीम् ।
अपश्यद्भुजगः कश्चित्ते तत्र मणिकुण्डले ॥२१॥
21. viśīrṇabandhane tasmingate kṛṣṇājine mahīm ,
apaśyadbhujagaḥ kaścitte tatra maṇikuṇḍale.
21. viśīrṇa-bandhane tasmin gate kṛṣṇa-ajine mahīm
apaśyat bhujagaḥ kaścit te tatra maṇi-kuṇḍale
21. tasmin viśīrṇa-bandhane kṛṣṇa-ajine mahīm gate (sati),
kaścit bhujagaḥ tatra te maṇi-kuṇḍale apaśyat
21. When that black deerskin (kṛṣṇājina), its fastening having become loose, fell to the ground, a certain snake saw those two gem-studded earrings there.
ऐरावतकुलोत्पन्नः शीघ्रो भूत्वा तदा स वै ।
विदश्यास्येन वल्मीकं विवेशाथ स कुण्डले ॥२२॥
22. airāvatakulotpannaḥ śīghro bhūtvā tadā sa vai ,
vidaśyāsyena valmīkaṁ viveśātha sa kuṇḍale.
22. airāvata-kula-utpannaḥ śīghraḥ bhūtvā tadā saḥ vai
vidaśya āsyena valmīkam viveśa atha saḥ kuṇḍale
22. tadā airāvata-kula-utpannaḥ saḥ śīghraḥ bhūtvā vai
āsyena valmīkam vidaśya atha saḥ kuṇḍale viveśa
22. That snake, born in the lineage of Airāvata, then swiftly, indeed, tore open an anthill with its mouth. Then it entered (the anthill) with those two earrings.
ह्रियमाणे तु दृष्ट्वा स कुण्डले भुजगेन ह ।
पपात वृक्षात्सोद्वेगो दुःखात्परमकोपनः ॥२३॥
23. hriyamāṇe tu dṛṣṭvā sa kuṇḍale bhujagena ha ,
papāta vṛkṣātsodvego duḥkhātparamakopanaḥ.
23. hriyamāṇe tu dṛṣṭvā saḥ kuṇḍale bhujagena ha
papāta vṛkṣāt sa-udvegaḥ duḥkhāt parama-kopanaḥ
23. saḥ hriyamāṇe tu bhujagena kuṇḍale dṛṣṭvā ha
duḥkhāt sa-udvegaḥ parama-kopanaḥ vṛkṣāt papāta
23. When he saw the two earrings being carried away by the serpent, he fell from the tree, agitated by grief and extremely furious.
स दण्डकाष्ठमादाय वल्मीकमखनत्तदा ।
क्रोधामर्षाभितप्ताङ्गस्ततो वै द्विजपुंगवः ॥२४॥
24. sa daṇḍakāṣṭhamādāya valmīkamakhanattadā ,
krodhāmarṣābhitaptāṅgastato vai dvijapuṁgavaḥ.
24. saḥ daṇḍakāṣṭham ādāya valmīkam akhanat tadā
krodha-amarṣa-abhitapta-aṅgaḥ tataḥ vai dvija-puṅgavaḥ
24. tadā tataḥ vai saḥ dvija-puṅgavaḥ krodha-amarṣa-abhitapta-aṅgaḥ
daṇḍakāṣṭham ādāya valmīkam akhanat
24. Then, that excellent brahmin (dvijapuṅgava), his body scorched by anger and indignation, took a stick and began to dig into the anthill.
तस्य वेगमसह्यं तमसहन्ती वसुंधरा ।
दण्डकाष्ठाभिनुन्नाङ्गी चचाल भृशमातुरा ॥२५॥
25. tasya vegamasahyaṁ tamasahantī vasuṁdharā ,
daṇḍakāṣṭhābhinunnāṅgī cacāla bhṛśamāturā.
25. tasya vegam asahyam tam asahantī vasundharā
daṇḍakāṣṭha-abhinunna-aṅgī cacāla bhṛśam āturā
25. vasundharā tasya tam asahyam vegam asahantī
daṇḍakāṣṭha-abhinunna-aṅgī bhṛśam āturā cacāla
25. The Earth (vasundharā), unable to endure that unbearable force of his, her body deeply affected by the stick, trembled greatly, in great distress.
ततः खनत एवाथ विप्रर्षेर्धरणीतलम् ।
नागलोकस्य पन्थानं कर्तुकामस्य निश्चयात् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ khanata evātha viprarṣerdharaṇītalam ,
nāgalokasya panthānaṁ kartukāmasya niścayāt.
26. tataḥ khanataḥ eva atha vipra-ṛṣeḥ dharaṇī-talam
nāga-lokasya panthānam kartu-kāmasya niścayāt
26. tataḥ atha vipra-ṛṣeḥ niścayāt nāga-lokasya
panthānam kartu-kāmasya eva dharaṇī-talam khanataḥ
26. Then, as that brahmin-sage (viprarṣi) continued to dig into the surface of the earth, he was resolved to create a path to the serpent realm (nāgaloka).
रथेन हरियुक्तेन तं देशमुपजग्मिवान् ।
वज्रपाणिर्महातेजा ददर्श च द्विजोत्तमम् ॥२७॥
27. rathena hariyuktena taṁ deśamupajagmivān ,
vajrapāṇirmahātejā dadarśa ca dvijottamam.
27. rathena hariyuktena tam deśam upajagmivān
vajrapāṇiḥ mahātejāḥ dadarśa ca dvijottamam
27. mahātejāḥ vajrapāṇiḥ hariyuktena rathena
tam deśam upajagmivān ca dvijottamam dadarśa
27. The greatly effulgent, thunderbolt-handed Indra (Vajrapāṇi) arrived at that place in a chariot drawn by his horses and saw the best of brahmins.
स तु तं ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा तस्य दुःखेन दुःखितः ।
उत्तङ्कमब्रवीत्तात नैतच्छक्यं त्वयेति वै ॥२८॥
28. sa tu taṁ brāhmaṇo bhūtvā tasya duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ ,
uttaṅkamabravīttāta naitacchakyaṁ tvayeti vai.
28. saḥ tu tam brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā tasya duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ
uttaṅkam abravīt tāta na etat śakyam tvayā iti vai
28. tu saḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā tasya duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ
uttaṅkam abravīt tāta etat tvayā na śakyam iti vai
28. But he (Indra), having assumed the form of a brahmin and being distressed by his (Uttanka's) sorrow, said to Uttanka, 'My dear son, this cannot be achieved by you,' indeed.
इतो हि नागलोको वै योजनानि सहस्रशः ।
न दण्डकाष्ठसाध्यं च मन्ये कार्यमिदं तव ॥२९॥
29. ito hi nāgaloko vai yojanāni sahasraśaḥ ,
na daṇḍakāṣṭhasādhyaṁ ca manye kāryamidaṁ tava.
29. itaḥ hi nāgalokaḥ vai yojanāni sahasraśaḥ na
daṇḍakāṣṭhasādhyam ca manye kāryam idam tava
29. hi itaḥ nāgalokaḥ vai sahasraśaḥ yojanāni ca
tava idam kāryam daṇḍakāṣṭhasādhyam na manye
29. Indeed, from here the serpent-world (nāgaloka) is thousands of yojanas away. And I believe this task of yours cannot be accomplished by simple means.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
नागलोके यदि ब्रह्मन्न शक्ये कुण्डले मया ।
प्राप्तुं प्राणान्विमोक्ष्यामि पश्यतस्ते द्विजोत्तम ॥३०॥
30. uttaṅka uvāca ,
nāgaloke yadi brahmanna śakye kuṇḍale mayā ,
prāptuṁ prāṇānvimokṣyāmi paśyataste dvijottama.

mayā prāptum prāṇān vimokṣyāmi paśyataḥ te dvijottama

30. Uttanka said: 'O (brahmin), if those earrings cannot be obtained by me in the serpent-world (nāgaloka), then, O best of brahmins, I will give up my life while you watch.'
यदा स नाशकत्तस्य निश्चयं कर्तुमन्यथा ।
वज्रपाणिस्तदा दण्डं वज्रास्त्रेण युयोज ह ॥३१॥
31. yadā sa nāśakattasya niścayaṁ kartumanyathā ,
vajrapāṇistadā daṇḍaṁ vajrāstreṇa yuyoja ha.
31. yadā sa na aśakat tasya niścayam kartum anyathā
vajrapāṇiḥ tadā daṇḍam vajrāstreṇa yuyoja ha
31. yadā sa tasya niścayam anyathā kartum na aśakat,
tadā vajrapāṇiḥ vajrāstreṇa daṇḍam yuyoja ha
31. When he (Daṇḍa) could not be made to alter his firm resolve, then Vajrapāṇi (Indra) engaged that staff with his thunderbolt-weapon.
ततो वज्रप्रहारैस्तैर्दार्यमाणा वसुंधरा ।
नागलोकस्य पन्थानमकरोज्जनमेजय ॥३२॥
32. tato vajraprahāraistairdāryamāṇā vasuṁdharā ,
nāgalokasya panthānamakarojjanamejaya.
32. tataḥ vajra prahāraiḥ taiḥ dāryamāṇā vasundharā
nāgalokasya panthānam akarot janamejaya
32. janamejaya tataḥ taiḥ vajra prahāraiḥ dāryamāṇā

32. Then, O Janamejaya, the earth, being split by those thunderbolt strikes, created a path to the nāga world.
स तेन मार्गेण तदा नागलोकं विवेश ह ।
ददर्श नागलोकं च योजनानि सहस्रशः ॥३३॥
33. sa tena mārgeṇa tadā nāgalokaṁ viveśa ha ,
dadarśa nāgalokaṁ ca yojanāni sahasraśaḥ.
33. sa tena mārgeṇa tadā nāgalokam viveśa ha
dadarśa nāgalokam ca yojanāni sahasraśaḥ
33. sa tadā tena mārgeṇa nāgalokam viveśa ha,
ca nāgalokam sahasraśaḥ yojanāni dadarśa
33. He then entered the nāga world by that path. And he saw the nāga world, vast for thousands of yojanas.
प्राकारनिचयैर्दिव्यैर्मणिमुक्ताभ्यलंकृतैः ।
उपपन्नं महाभाग शातकुम्भमयैस्तथा ॥३४॥
34. prākāranicayairdivyairmaṇimuktābhyalaṁkṛtaiḥ ,
upapannaṁ mahābhāga śātakumbhamayaistathā.
34. prākāra nicayaiḥ divyaiḥ maṇi muktābhiḥ alaṅkṛtaiḥ
upapannam mahābhāga śātakumbhamayaiḥ tathā
34. mahābhāga,
(tat) divyaiḥ maṇi muktābhiḥ alaṅkṛtaiḥ tathā śātakumbhamayaiḥ prākāra nicayaiḥ upapannam
34. O great-souled one, it was endowed with divine rows of ramparts, adorned with jewels and pearls, and likewise, with those made of pure gold.
वापीः स्फटिकसोपाना नदीश्च विमलोदकाः ।
ददर्श वृक्षांश्च बहून्नानाद्विजगणायुतान् ॥३५॥
35. vāpīḥ sphaṭikasopānā nadīśca vimalodakāḥ ,
dadarśa vṛkṣāṁśca bahūnnānādvijagaṇāyutān.
35. vāpīḥ sphaṭikasopānāḥ nadīḥ ca vimalodakāḥ
dadarśa vṛkṣān ca bahūn nānādvijagaṇāyutān

35. He saw ponds with crystal steps, and rivers with clear water, and many trees frequented by various flocks of birds.
तस्य लोकस्य च द्वारं ददर्श स भृगूद्वहः ।
पञ्चयोजनविस्तारमायतं शतयोजनम् ॥३६॥
36. tasya lokasya ca dvāraṁ dadarśa sa bhṛgūdvahaḥ ,
pañcayojanavistāramāyataṁ śatayojanam.
36. tasya lokasya ca dvāram dadarśa saḥ bhṛgūdvahaḥ
pañcayojanavistāram āyatam śatayojanam
36. saḥ bhṛgūdvahaḥ tasya lokasya ca pañcayojanavistāram
āyatam śatayojanam dvāram dadarśa
36. And he, the descendant of Bhrigu, saw the gate of that world, which was five yojanas wide and a hundred yojanas long.
नागलोकमुत्तङ्कस्तु प्रेक्ष्य दीनोऽभवत्तदा ।
निराशश्चाभवत्तात कुण्डलाहरणे पुनः ॥३७॥
37. nāgalokamuttaṅkastu prekṣya dīno'bhavattadā ,
nirāśaścābhavattāta kuṇḍalāharaṇe punaḥ.
37. nāgalokam uttaṅkaḥ tu prekṣya dīnaḥ abhavat tadā
nirāśaḥ ca abhavat tāta kuṇḍalāharaṇe punaḥ
37. uttaṅkaḥ tu nāgalokam prekṣya tadā dīnaḥ abhavat
ca tāta punaḥ kuṇḍalāharaṇe nirāśaḥ abhavat
37. But after seeing the world of serpents (nāgaloka), Uttanka then became distressed, and, O dear one, he again became hopeless about obtaining the earrings.
तत्र प्रोवाच तुरगस्तं कृष्णश्वेतवालधिः ।
ताम्रास्यनेत्रः कौरव्य प्रज्वलन्निव तेजसा ॥३८॥
38. tatra provāca turagastaṁ kṛṣṇaśvetavāladhiḥ ,
tāmrāsyanetraḥ kauravya prajvalanniva tejasā.
38. tatra provāca turagaḥ tu tam kṛṣṇaśvetavāladhiḥ
tāmrāsyānetraḥ kauravya prajvalan iva tejasā

38. Thereupon, the horse with a black and white tail, and with copper-red face and eyes, spoke to him as if blazing with splendor, O descendant of Kuru.
धमस्वापानमेतन्मे ततस्त्वं विप्र लप्स्यसे ।
ऐरावतसुतेनेह तवानीते हि कुण्डले ॥३९॥
39. dhamasvāpānametanme tatastvaṁ vipra lapsyase ,
airāvatasuteneha tavānīte hi kuṇḍale.
39. dhamasvāpānam etat me tataḥ tvam vipra lapsyase
airāvatasutena iha tava ānīte hi kuṇḍale
39. vipra etat me dhamasvāpānam tataḥ tvam lapsyase
hi tava kuṇḍale airāvatasutena iha ānīte
39. O brahmin, this is the 'drinking of smoke' ritual (dhamasvāpānam) for you, offered by me; perform it, and thereafter you will obtain (the earrings). Indeed, your earrings have been brought here by Airāvata's son.
मा जुगुप्सां कृथाः पुत्र त्वमत्रार्थे कथंचन ।
त्वयैतद्धि समाचीर्णं गौतमस्याश्रमे तदा ॥४०॥
40. mā jugupsāṁ kṛthāḥ putra tvamatrārthe kathaṁcana ,
tvayaitaddhi samācīrṇaṁ gautamasyāśrame tadā.
40. mā jugupsām kṛthāḥ putra tvam atra arthe kathañcana
tvayā etat hi samācīrṇam gautamasya āśrame tadā
40. putra tvam atra arthe kathañcana mā jugupsām kṛthāḥ
hi tadā gautamasya āśrame etat tvayā samācīrṇam
40. Son, do not feel any aversion (jugupsā) at all in this matter. Indeed, this very act was performed by you then in Gautama's hermitage (āśrama).
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
कथं भवन्तं जानीयामुपाध्यायाश्रमं प्रति ।
यन्मया चीर्णपूर्वं च श्रोतुमिच्छामि तद्ध्यहम् ॥४१॥
41. uttaṅka uvāca ,
kathaṁ bhavantaṁ jānīyāmupādhyāyāśramaṁ prati ,
yanmayā cīrṇapūrvaṁ ca śrotumicchāmi taddhyaham.
41. uttaṅka uvāca katham bhavantam jānīyām upādhyāya āśramam
prati yat mayā cīrṇapūrvam ca śrotum icchāmi tat hi aham
41. uttaṅka uvāca katham upādhyāya āśramam prati bhavantam

41. Uttanka said: 'How am I to identify you to my preceptor's (guru) wife upon returning to the hermitage (āśrama)? And what was previously done by me, that indeed I wish to hear.'
अश्व उवाच ।
गुरोर्गुरुं मां जानीहि ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् ।
त्वया ह्यहं सदा वत्स गुरोरर्थेऽभिपूजितः ॥४२॥
42. aśva uvāca ,
gurorguruṁ māṁ jānīhi jvalitaṁ jātavedasam ,
tvayā hyahaṁ sadā vatsa gurorarthe'bhipūjitaḥ.
42. aśva uvāca guroḥ gurum mām jānīhi jvalitam jātavedasam
tvayā hi aham sadā vatsa guroḥ arthe abhipūjitaḥ
42. aśva uvāca mām guroḥ gurum jvalitam jātavedasam jānīhi

42. The horse said: 'Know me as the supreme preceptor (guru), the blazing fire (jātavedas). Indeed, my dear child, you have always worshipped me for your preceptor's (guru) sake.'
सततं पूजितो विप्र शुचिना भृगुनन्दन ।
तस्माच्छ्रेयो विधास्यामि तवैवं कुरु मा चिरम् ॥४३॥
43. satataṁ pūjito vipra śucinā bhṛgunandana ,
tasmācchreyo vidhāsyāmi tavaivaṁ kuru mā ciram.
43. satatam pūjitaḥ vipra śucinā bhṛgunandana tasmāt
śreyaḥ vidhāsyāmi tava evam kuru mā ciram
43. O brahmin, O son of Bhṛgu, I am constantly honored by the pure one. Therefore, I will grant you prosperity. Do this right away, without delay.
इत्युक्तः स तथाकार्षीदुत्तङ्कश्चित्रभानुना ।
घृतार्चिः प्रीतिमांश्चापि प्रजज्वाल दिधक्षया ॥४४॥
44. ityuktaḥ sa tathākārṣīduttaṅkaścitrabhānunā ,
ghṛtārciḥ prītimāṁścāpi prajajvāla didhakṣayā.
44. iti uktaḥ saḥ tathā akārṣīt uttaṅkaḥ citrabhānunā
ghṛtārciḥ prītimān ca api prajajvāla didhakṣayā
44. Thus spoken to, Uttanka acted accordingly with Citrabhānu (Agni). And Citrabhānu, whose flames were fed with ghee and who was full of satisfaction, blazed forth, desiring to consume.
ततोऽस्य रोमकूपेभ्यो ध्मायमानस्य भारत ।
घनः प्रादुरभूद्धूमो नागलोकभयावहः ॥४५॥
45. tato'sya romakūpebhyo dhmāyamānasya bhārata ,
ghanaḥ prādurabhūddhūmo nāgalokabhayāvahaḥ.
45. tataḥ asya romakūpebhyah dhmāyamānasya bhārata
ghanaḥ prādurabhūt dhūmaḥ nāgalokabhayāvahaḥ
45. Then, O descendant of Bharata, from the pores of his (Agni's) skin, as he was being fanned, a thick smoke manifested, terrifying to the serpent world (nāgaloka).
तेन धूमेन सहसा वर्धमानेन भारत ।
नागलोके महाराज न प्रज्ञायत किंचन ॥४६॥
46. tena dhūmena sahasā vardhamānena bhārata ,
nāgaloke mahārāja na prajñāyata kiṁcana.

46. O descendant of Bharata, O great king, by that smoke which suddenly and rapidly increased, nothing at all could be perceived in the serpent world (nāgaloka).
हाहाकृतमभूत्सर्वमैरावतनिवेशनम् ।
वासुकिप्रमुखानां च नागानां जनमेजय ॥४७॥
47. hāhākṛtamabhūtsarvamairāvataniveśanam ,
vāsukipramukhānāṁ ca nāgānāṁ janamejaya.
47. hāhākṛtam abhūt sarvam airāvataniveśanam
vāsukipramukhānām ca nāgānām janamejaya
47. janamejaya vāsukipramukhānām ca nāgānām
sarvam airāvataniveśanam hāhākṛtam abhūt
47. O Janamejaya, the entire abode of the Nāgas, including those led by Vāsuki, became filled with cries of distress.
न प्रकाशन्त वेश्मानि धूमरुद्धानि भारत ।
नीहारसंवृतानीव वनानि गिरयस्तथा ॥४८॥
48. na prakāśanta veśmāni dhūmaruddhāni bhārata ,
nīhārasaṁvṛtānīva vanāni girayastathā.
48. na prakāśanta veśmāni dhūmaruddhāni bhārata
nīhārasaṃvṛtāni iva vanāni girayaḥ tathā
48. bhārata dhūmaruddhāni veśmāni na prakāśanta
nīhārasaṃvṛtāni vanāni tathā girayaḥ iva
48. O Bhārata, the houses, obstructed by smoke, were not visible, just like forests and mountains are enveloped by mist.
ते धूमरक्तनयना वह्नितेजोभितापिताः ।
आजग्मुर्निश्चयं ज्ञातुं भार्गवस्यातितेजसः ॥४९॥
49. te dhūmaraktanayanā vahnitejobhitāpitāḥ ,
ājagmurniścayaṁ jñātuṁ bhārgavasyātitejasaḥ.
49. te dhūmaraktanayanāḥ vahni-tejaḥ abhitāpitāḥ
ājagmuḥ niścayam jñātum bhārgavasya atitejasas
49. dhūmaraktanayanāḥ vahni-tejaḥ abhitāpitāḥ te
atitejasas bhārgavasya niścayam jñātum ājagmuḥ
49. With their eyes reddened by smoke and scorched by the intense heat of the fire, they came to ascertain the resolve of the supremely powerful Bhārgava.
श्रुत्वा च निश्चयं तस्य महर्षेस्तिग्मतेजसः ।
संभ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे पूजां चक्रुर्यथाविधि ॥५०॥
50. śrutvā ca niścayaṁ tasya maharṣestigmatejasaḥ ,
saṁbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve pūjāṁ cakruryathāvidhi.
50. śrutvā ca niścayam tasya maharṣeḥ tigmatejasas
saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve pūjām cakruḥ yathāvidhi
50. ca tasya tigmatejasas maharṣeḥ niścayam śrutvā
saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve yathāvidhi pūjām cakruḥ
50. And having heard the resolve of that great sage (maharṣi) of fierce energy, all of them, with agitated minds, performed worship according to the prescribed rites.
सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो नागा वृद्धबालपुरोगमाः ।
शिरोभिः प्रणिपत्योचुः प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥५१॥
51. sarve prāñjalayo nāgā vṛddhabālapurogamāḥ ,
śirobhiḥ praṇipatyocuḥ prasīda bhagavanniti.
51. sarve prāñjalayaḥ nāgāḥ vṛddhabālapurogamāḥ
śirobhiḥ praṇipatya ūcuḥ prasīda bhagavan iti

51. All the Nāgas, with the old and young at the forefront, stood with folded hands, bowed down with their heads, and said, "O revered one, be pleased!"
प्रसाद्य ब्राह्मणं ते तु पाद्यमर्घ्यं निवेद्य च ।
प्रायच्छन्कुण्डले दिव्ये पन्नगाः परमार्चिते ॥५२॥
52. prasādya brāhmaṇaṁ te tu pādyamarghyaṁ nivedya ca ,
prāyacchankuṇḍale divye pannagāḥ paramārcite.
52. prasādya brāhmaṇam te tu pādyam arghyam nivedya
ca prāyacchan kuṇḍale divye pannagāḥ paramārcite
52. te pannagāḥ tu brāhmaṇam prasādya,
pādyam arghyam ca nivedya,

52. Having pleased the brahmin, those Nāgas, moreover, offered water for the feet and a respectful offering, and then gave him the two divine and exquisitely adorned earrings.
ततः संपूजितो नागैस्तत्रोत्तङ्कः प्रतापवान् ।
अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा जगाम गुरुसद्म तत् ॥५३॥
53. tataḥ saṁpūjito nāgaistatrottaṅkaḥ pratāpavān ,
agniṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā jagāma gurusadma tat.
53. tataḥ sampūjitaḥ nāgaiḥ tatra uttaṅkaḥ pratāpavān
agnim pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā jagāma gurusadma tat
53. tataḥ nāgaiḥ tatra sampūjitaḥ pratāpavān uttaṅkaḥ
agnim pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā tat gurusadma jagāma
53. Thereafter, the mighty Uttanka, having been honored by the Nāgas there, circumambulated the fire and went to that abode of his teacher (guru).
स गत्वा त्वरितो राजन्गौतमस्य निवेशनम् ।
प्रायच्छत्कुण्डले दिव्ये गुरुपत्न्यै तदानघ ॥५४॥
54. sa gatvā tvarito rājangautamasya niveśanam ,
prāyacchatkuṇḍale divye gurupatnyai tadānagha.
54. saḥ gatvā tvaritaḥ rājan gautamasya niveśanam
prāyacchat kuṇḍale divye gurupatnyai tadā anagha
54. rājan,

saḥ tvaritaḥ gatvā gautamasya niveśanam,

54. O king, O sinless one, he, having gone quickly to the abode of Gautama, then gave the two divine earrings to the teacher's wife (guru-patnī).
एवं महात्मना तेन त्रीँल्लोकाञ्जनमेजय ।
परिक्रम्याहृते दिव्ये ततस्ते मणिकुण्डले ॥५५॥
55. evaṁ mahātmanā tena trīँllokāñjanamejaya ,
parikramyāhṛte divye tataste maṇikuṇḍale.
55. evam mahātmanā tena trīn lokān janamejaya
parikramya āhṛte divye tataḥ te maṇikuṇḍale
55. janamejaya evam tena mahātmanā trīn lokān

55. O Janamejaya, thus, after that great-souled person had traversed the three worlds, those two divine gem earrings were then brought back.
एवंप्रभावः स मुनिरुत्तङ्को भरतर्षभ ।
परेण तपसा युक्तो यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥५६॥
56. evaṁprabhāvaḥ sa muniruttaṅko bharatarṣabha ,
pareṇa tapasā yukto yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi.
56. evamprabhāvaḥ saḥ muniḥ uttaṅkaḥ bharatarṣabha
pareṇa tapasā yuktaḥ yat mām tvam paripṛcchasi
56. bharatarṣabha saḥ uttaṅkaḥ muniḥ evamprabhāvaḥ
pareṇa tapasā yuktaḥ yat tvam mām paripṛcchasi
56. O best of Bharatas, that sage (muni) Uttaṅka was endowed with such great power and supreme austerity (tapas), about whom you are now asking me.
