तस्मिन्वाक्यान्तरे वाक्यं पुनरेवार्जुनोऽब्रवीत् ।
विषण्णमनसं ज्येष्ठमिदं भ्रातरमीश्वरम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasminvākyāntare vākyaṁ punarevārjuno'bravīt ,
viṣaṇṇamanasaṁ jyeṣṭhamidaṁ bhrātaramīśvaram.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: In that interim between speeches, Arjuna again addressed this statement to his elder brother, the lord (Yudhiṣṭhira), whose mind was dejected.
क्षत्रधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ प्राप्य राज्यमनुत्तमम् ।
जित्वा चारीन्नरश्रेष्ठ तप्यते किं भवान्भृशम् ॥२॥
2. kṣatradharmeṇa dharmajña prāpya rājyamanuttamam ,
jitvā cārīnnaraśreṣṭha tapyate kiṁ bhavānbhṛśam.

jitvā cārīn naraśreṣṭha tapyate kim bhavān bhṛśam
2. dharmajña naraśreṣṭha kṣatradharmeṇa anuttamam rājyam

2. O knower of natural law (dharma), O best of men, having obtained an unrivaled kingdom through the warrior's natural law (kṣatradharma), and having conquered your enemies—why are you so greatly tormented?
क्षत्रियाणां महाराज संग्रामे निधनं स्मृतम् ।
विशिष्टं बहुभिर्यज्ञैः क्षत्रधर्ममनुस्मर ॥३॥
3. kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahārāja saṁgrāme nidhanaṁ smṛtam ,
viśiṣṭaṁ bahubhiryajñaiḥ kṣatradharmamanusmara.
3. kṣatriyāṇām mahārāja saṅgrāme nidhanam smṛtam
viśiṣṭam bahubhiḥ yajñaiḥ kṣatradharmam anusmara
3. mahārāja kṣatriyāṇām saṅgrāme nidhanam bahubhiḥ
yajñaiḥ viśiṣṭam smṛtam kṣatradharmam anusmara
3. O great king, for Kṣatriyas, dying in battle is deemed more distinguished than many sacrificial rites (yajña). Remember the natural law (dharma) of a Kṣatriya.
ब्राह्मणानां तपस्त्यागः प्रेत्यधर्मविधिः स्मृतः ।
क्षत्रियाणां च विहितं संग्रामे निधनं विभो ॥४॥
4. brāhmaṇānāṁ tapastyāgaḥ pretyadharmavidhiḥ smṛtaḥ ,
kṣatriyāṇāṁ ca vihitaṁ saṁgrāme nidhanaṁ vibho.
4. brāhmaṇānām tapas tyāgaḥ pretyadharmavidhiḥ smṛtaḥ
kṣatriyāṇām ca vihitam saṅgrāme nidhanam vibho
4. vibho brāhmaṇānām tapas tyāgaḥ pretyadharmavidhiḥ
smṛtaḥ ca kṣatriyāṇām saṅgrāme nidhanam vihitam
4. For Brahmins, asceticism (tapas) and renunciation (tyāga) are considered the appropriate conduct (dharma) for the afterlife. And for Kṣatriyas, O lord, death in battle is ordained.
क्षत्रधर्मो महारौद्रः शस्त्रनित्य इति स्मृतः ।
वधश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ काले शस्त्रेण संयुगे ॥५॥
5. kṣatradharmo mahāraudraḥ śastranitya iti smṛtaḥ ,
vadhaśca bharataśreṣṭha kāle śastreṇa saṁyuge.

vadhaḥ ca bharataśreṣṭha kāle śastreṇa saṃyuge
5. bharataśreṣṭha kṣatradharmaḥ mahāraudraḥ śastranityaḥ
iti smṛtaḥ ca kāle śastreṇa saṃyuge vadhaḥ
5. The natural law (dharma) of a Kṣatriya is remembered as exceedingly fierce and perpetually involving weapons. And for a Kṣatriya, O best of Bharatas, death at the appropriate time by a weapon in battle (saṃyuga) is also considered (part of it).
ब्राह्मणस्यापि चेद्राजन्क्षत्रधर्मेण तिष्ठतः ।
प्रशस्तं जीवितं लोके क्षत्रं हि ब्रह्मसंस्थितम् ॥६॥
6. brāhmaṇasyāpi cedrājankṣatradharmeṇa tiṣṭhataḥ ,
praśastaṁ jīvitaṁ loke kṣatraṁ hi brahmasaṁsthitam.
6. brāhmaṇasya api cet rājan kṣatradharmeṇa tiṣṭhataḥ
praśastam jīvitam loke kṣatram hi brahmasaṃsthitam
6. rājan api cet brāhmaṇasya kṣatradharmeṇa tiṣṭhataḥ
jīvitam loke praśastam hi kṣatram brahmasaṃsthitam
6. Even for a Brahmin, O king, who follows the natural law (dharma) of a Kṣatriya, his life is praised in the world, because the Kṣatriya class (kṣatra) is indeed established in Brahman.
न त्यागो न पुनर्याच्ञा न तपो मनुजेश्वर ।
क्षत्रियस्य विधीयन्ते न परस्वोपजीवनम् ॥७॥
7. na tyāgo na punaryācñā na tapo manujeśvara ,
kṣatriyasya vidhīyante na parasvopajīvanam.
7. na tyāgaḥ na punar yācñā na tapaḥ manujeśvara
kṣatriyasya vidhīyante na parasvopajīvanam
7. manujeśvara kṣatriyasya tyāgaḥ na yācñā na
punar tapaḥ na parasvopajīvanam na vidhīyante
7. O lord of men, renunciation, begging, penance (tapas), and subsisting on others' wealth are not enjoined upon a kshatriya.
स भवान्सर्वधर्मज्ञः सर्वात्मा भरतर्षभ ।
राजा मनीषी निपुणो लोके दृष्टपरावरः ॥८॥
8. sa bhavānsarvadharmajñaḥ sarvātmā bharatarṣabha ,
rājā manīṣī nipuṇo loke dṛṣṭaparāvaraḥ.
8. saḥ bhavān sarvadharmājñaḥ sarvātmā bharatarṣabha
rājā manīṣī nipuṇaḥ loke dṛṣṭaparāvaraḥ
8. bharatarṣabha saḥ bhavān rājā manīṣī nipuṇaḥ
loke dṛṣṭaparāvaraḥ sarvadharmājñaḥ sarvātmā
8. O best of Bharatas, you are a king, wise, skilled, and one who has perceived the highest and the lowest (i.e., thoroughly knowledgeable) in the world. You are a knower of all natural law (dharma) and possess a universal nature (ātman).
त्यक्त्वा संतापजं शोकं दंशितो भव कर्मणि ।
क्षत्रियस्य विशेषेण हृदयं वज्रसंहतम् ॥९॥
9. tyaktvā saṁtāpajaṁ śokaṁ daṁśito bhava karmaṇi ,
kṣatriyasya viśeṣeṇa hṛdayaṁ vajrasaṁhatam.
9. tyaktvā saṃtāpajam śokam daṃśitaḥ bhava karmaṇi
kṣatriyasya viśeṣeṇa hṛdayam vajrasaṃhatam
9. saṃtāpajam śokam tyaktvā karmaṇi daṃśitaḥ bhava
viśeṣeṇa kṣatriyasya hṛdayam vajrasaṃhatam
9. Having cast off the sorrow born of anguish, be resolute in action (karma). For, a kshatriya's heart, especially, is firm like a thunderbolt (vajra).
जित्वारीन्क्षत्रधर्मेण प्राप्य राज्यमकण्टकम् ।
विजितात्मा मनुष्येन्द्र यज्ञदानपरो भव ॥१०॥
10. jitvārīnkṣatradharmeṇa prāpya rājyamakaṇṭakam ,
vijitātmā manuṣyendra yajñadānaparo bhava.
10. jitvā arīn kṣatra-dharmeṇa prāpya rājyam akaṇṭakam
vijitātmā manuṣyendra yajña-dāna-paraḥ bhava
10. manuṣyendra arīn kṣatra-dharmeṇa jitvā akaṇṭakam
rājyam prāpya vijitātmā yajña-dāna-paraḥ bhava
10. O king among men, having conquered your enemies in accordance with the warrior's intrinsic nature (dharma), and having secured an undisputed kingdom, become one whose self (ātman) is controlled, and who is dedicated to Vedic ritual (yajña) and charity (dāna).
इन्द्रो वै ब्रह्मणः पुत्रः कर्मणा क्षत्रियोऽभवत् ।
ज्ञातीनां पापवृत्तीनां जघान नवतीर्नव ॥११॥
11. indro vai brahmaṇaḥ putraḥ karmaṇā kṣatriyo'bhavat ,
jñātīnāṁ pāpavṛttīnāṁ jaghāna navatīrnava.
11. indraḥ vai brahmaṇaḥ putraḥ karmaṇā kṣatriyaḥ
abhavat jñātīnām pāpavṛttīnām jaghāna navatīḥ nava
11. indraḥ brahmaṇaḥ putraḥ vai karmaṇā kṣatriyaḥ
abhavat pāpavṛttīnām jñātīnām navatīḥ nava jaghāna
11. Indra, though by birth a son of a Brahmin, became a warrior (kṣatriya) through his actions (karma). He killed eighty-one of his relatives who engaged in sinful conduct.
तच्चास्य कर्म पूज्यं हि प्रशस्यं च विशां पते ।
तेन चेन्द्रत्वमापेदे देवानामिति नः श्रुतम् ॥१२॥
12. taccāsya karma pūjyaṁ hi praśasyaṁ ca viśāṁ pate ,
tena cendratvamāpede devānāmiti naḥ śrutam.
12. tat ca asya karma pūjyam hi praśasyam ca viśām pate
tena ca indratvam āpede devānām iti naḥ śrutam
12. viśām pate ca asya tat karma hi pūjyam ca praśasyam
tena ca devānām indratvam āpede iti naḥ śrutam
12. And that action (karma) of his, O lord of the people, is indeed venerable and praiseworthy. By that very action, he attained the status of Indra among the gods, as we have heard.
स त्वं यज्ञैर्महाराज यजस्व बहुदक्षिणैः ।
यथैवेन्द्रो मनुष्येन्द्र चिराय विगतज्वरः ॥१३॥
13. sa tvaṁ yajñairmahārāja yajasva bahudakṣiṇaiḥ ,
yathaivendro manuṣyendra cirāya vigatajvaraḥ.
13. sa tvam yajñaiḥ mahārāja yajasva bahudakṣiṇaiḥ
yathā eva indraḥ manuṣyendra cirāya vigatajvaraḥ
13. mahārāja manuṣyendra sa tvam cirāya vigatajvaraḥ
indraḥ yathā eva bahudakṣiṇaiḥ yajñaiḥ yajasva
13. Therefore, O great king, you should perform Vedic rituals (yajña) with many offerings, just as Indra, O lord of men, [did] for a long time, free from distress.
मा त्वमेवंगते किंचित्क्षत्रियर्षभ शोचिथाः ।
गतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण शस्त्रपूताः परां गतिम् ॥१४॥
14. mā tvamevaṁgate kiṁcitkṣatriyarṣabha śocithāḥ ,
gatāste kṣatradharmeṇa śastrapūtāḥ parāṁ gatim.
14. mā tvam evaṃgate kiñcit kṣatriyarṣabha śocithāḥ
gatāḥ te kṣatradharmeṇa śastrapūtāḥ parām gatim
14. kṣatriyarṣabha tvam evaṃgate kiñcit mā śocithāḥ
śastrapūtāḥ te kṣatradharmeṇa parām gatim gatāḥ
14. Therefore, O best of warriors (kṣatriya-ṛṣabha), do not grieve at all in such a situation. Those who were purified by weapons, in accordance with the warrior's intrinsic nature (dharma), have attained the supreme state.
भवितव्यं तथा तच्च यद्वृत्तं भरतर्षभ ।
दिष्टं हि राजशार्दूल न शक्यमतिवर्तितुम् ॥१५॥
15. bhavitavyaṁ tathā tacca yadvṛttaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
diṣṭaṁ hi rājaśārdūla na śakyamativartitum.
15. bhavitavyam tathā tat ca yat vṛttam bharatarṣabha
diṣṭam hi rājaśārdūla na śakyam ativartitum
15. bharatarṣabha tat ca yat vṛttam tathā bhavitavyam
hi rājaśārdūla diṣṭam ativartitum na śakyam
15. What is destined to happen, and what has already occurred, O best among Bharatas, that indeed cannot be overcome. For destiny, O tiger among kings, cannot be transgressed.
