भीमसेन उवाच ।
धिगस्तु मे बाहुबलं गाण्डीवं फल्गुनस्य च ।
यत्ते रक्तौ पुरा भूत्वा पाणी कृतकिणावुभौ ॥१॥
1. bhīmasena uvāca ,
dhigastu me bāhubalaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ phalgunasya ca ,
yatte raktau purā bhūtvā pāṇī kṛtakiṇāvubhau.
1. bhīmasenaḥ uvāca dhik astu me bāhubalam gāṇḍīvam phālgunasya
ca yat te raktau purā bhūtvā pāṇī kṛtakīṇau ubhau
1. Bhīmasena said: Shame upon my arm-strength and upon Arjuna's (Phalguna's) Gāṇḍīva bow! For these two hands of mine, which were formerly soft and red, have now become calloused.
सभायां स्म विराटस्य करोमि कदनं महत् ।
तत्र मां धर्मराजस्तु कटाक्षेण न्यवारयत् ।
तदहं तस्य विज्ञाय स्थित एवास्मि भामिनि ॥२॥
2. sabhāyāṁ sma virāṭasya karomi kadanaṁ mahat ,
tatra māṁ dharmarājastu kaṭākṣeṇa nyavārayat ,
tadahaṁ tasya vijñāya sthita evāsmi bhāmini.
2. sabhāyām sma virāṭasya karomi kadanam
mahat tatra mām dharmarājaḥ tu
kaṭākṣeṇa nyavārayat tat aham tasya
vijñāya sthitaḥ eva asmi bhāmini
2. In Virāta's (Virāṭa's) assembly, I was about to inflict great destruction. But there, the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja) [Yudhiṣṭhira] restrained me with a mere glance. Understanding his intention, O passionate woman, I remained still.
यच्च राष्ट्रात्प्रच्यवनं कुरूणामवधश्च यः ।
सुयोधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ॥३॥
3. yacca rāṣṭrātpracyavanaṁ kurūṇāmavadhaśca yaḥ ,
suyodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca.
3. yat ca rāṣṭrāt pracyavanam kurūṇām avadhaḥ ca
yaḥ suyodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca
3. And the expulsion from the kingdom, and the slaying of the Kurus, and of Suyodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni, the son of Subala (Subala).
दुःशासनस्य पापस्य यन्मया न हृतं शिरः ।
तन्मे दहति कल्याणि हृदि शल्यमिवार्पितम् ।
मा धर्मं जहि सुश्रोणि क्रोधं जहि महामते ॥४॥
4. duḥśāsanasya pāpasya yanmayā na hṛtaṁ śiraḥ ,
tanme dahati kalyāṇi hṛdi śalyamivārpitam ,
mā dharmaṁ jahi suśroṇi krodhaṁ jahi mahāmate.
4. duḥśāsanasya pāpasya yat mayā na
hṛtam śiraḥ tat me dahati kalyāṇi
hṛdi śalyam iva arpitam mā dharmam
jahi suśroṇi krodham jahi mahāmate
4. The fact that the head of that wicked Duḥśāsana was not severed by me - that, O blessed one (Kalyāṇī), burns me in my heart like an arrow (śalya) fixed within. Therefore, O fair-hipped one (Suśroṇī), do not abandon natural law (dharma); instead, abandon anger, O great-minded one (Mahāmate).
इमं च समुपालम्भं त्वत्तो राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
शृणुयाद्यदि कल्याणि कृत्स्नं जह्यात्स जीवितम् ॥५॥
5. imaṁ ca samupālambhaṁ tvatto rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
śṛṇuyādyadi kalyāṇi kṛtsnaṁ jahyātsa jīvitam.
5. imam ca samupālambham tvattaḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
śṛṇuyāt yadi kalyāṇi kṛtsnam jahyāt saḥ jīvitam
5. O auspicious one, if King Yudhishthira were to hear this reproach from you, he would abandon his entire life.
धनंजयो वा सुश्रोणि यमौ वा तनुमध्यमे ।
लोकान्तरगतेष्वेषु नाहं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥६॥
6. dhanaṁjayo vā suśroṇi yamau vā tanumadhyame ,
lokāntaragateṣveṣu nāhaṁ śakṣyāmi jīvitum.
6. dhanaṃjayaḥ vā suśroṇi yamau vā tanumadhyame
lokāntaragateṣu eṣu na aham śakṣyāmi jīvitum
6. O beautiful-hipped one, O slender-waisted one, if Dhananjaya or the twins were to depart for another world (die), I would not be able to live.
सुकन्या नाम शार्याती भार्गवं च्यवनं वने ।
वल्मीकभूतं शाम्यन्तमन्वपद्यत भामिनी ॥७॥
7. sukanyā nāma śāryātī bhārgavaṁ cyavanaṁ vane ,
valmīkabhūtaṁ śāmyantamanvapadyata bhāminī.
7. sukanyā nāma śāryātī bhārgavam cyavanam vane
valmīkabhūtam śāmyantam anvapadyata bhāminī
7. The glorious lady named Sukanya, daughter of Saryati, attended upon the Bhargava (Chyavana) in the forest, who had become covered by an anthill and was meditating peacefully.
नाडायनी चेन्द्रसेना रूपेण यदि ते श्रुता ।
पतिमन्वचरद्वृद्धं पुरा वर्षसहस्रिणम् ॥८॥
8. nāḍāyanī cendrasenā rūpeṇa yadi te śrutā ,
patimanvacaradvṛddhaṁ purā varṣasahasriṇam.
8. nāḍāyanī ca indrasenā rūpeṇa yadi te śrutā
patim anvacarat vṛddham purā varṣasahasriṇam
8. If you have heard of Nāḍāyanī, also called Indrasena, regarding her beauty, then know that she formerly served her ancient husband, who was a thousand years old.
दुहिता जनकस्यापि वैदेही यदि ते श्रुता ।
पतिमन्वचरत्सीता महारण्यनिवासिनम् ॥९॥
9. duhitā janakasyāpi vaidehī yadi te śrutā ,
patimanvacaratsītā mahāraṇyanivāsinam.
9. duhitā janakasya api vaidehī yadi te śrutā
patim anvacarat sītā mahāraṇyanivāsinam
9. If you have heard of Vaidehi, the daughter of Janaka, know that Sita followed her husband, who was dwelling in the great forest.
रक्षसा निग्रहं प्राप्य रामस्य महिषी प्रिया ।
क्लिश्यमानापि सुश्रोणी राममेवान्वपद्यत ॥१०॥
10. rakṣasā nigrahaṁ prāpya rāmasya mahiṣī priyā ,
kliśyamānāpi suśroṇī rāmamevānvapadyata.
10. rakṣasā nigraham prāpya rāmasya mahiṣī priyā
kliśyamānā api suśroṇī rāmam eva anvapadyata
10. Even though the beloved queen of Rama, the fair-hipped one, suffered capture by a demon (rakṣas), she still resorted to Rama alone.
लोपामुद्रा तथा भीरु वयोरूपसमन्विता ।
अगस्त्यमन्वयाद्धित्वा कामान्सर्वानमानुषान् ॥११॥
11. lopāmudrā tathā bhīru vayorūpasamanvitā ,
agastyamanvayāddhitvā kāmānsarvānamānuṣān.
11. lopāmudrā tathā bhīru vayorūpasamanvitā
agastyam anvayat hitvā kāmān sarvān amānuṣān
11. Similarly, Lopamudra, though delicate and endowed with youth and beauty, followed Agastya, abandoning all superhuman desires.
यथैताः कीर्तिता नार्यो रूपवत्यः पतिव्रताः ।
तथा त्वमपि कल्याणि सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥१२॥
12. yathaitāḥ kīrtitā nāryo rūpavatyaḥ pativratāḥ ,
tathā tvamapi kalyāṇi sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ.
12. yathā etāḥ kīrtitāḥ nāryaḥ rūpavatyah pativratāḥ
tathā tvam api kalyāṇi sarvaiḥ samudita guṇaiḥ
12. Just as these beautiful and devoted women have been celebrated, so too, O auspicious one, are you endowed with all good qualities.
मादीर्घं क्षम कालं त्वं मासमध्यर्धसंमितम् ।
पूर्णे त्रयोदशे वर्षे राज्ञो राज्ञी भविष्यसि ॥१३॥
13. mādīrghaṁ kṣama kālaṁ tvaṁ māsamadhyardhasaṁmitam ,
pūrṇe trayodaśe varṣe rājño rājñī bhaviṣyasi.
13. mā dīrgham kṣama kālam tvam māsam adhyardhasaṃmitam
| pūrṇe trayodaśe varṣe rājñaḥ rājñī bhaviṣyasi
13. You should not endure this long period, not even for an additional month and a half. Upon the completion of the thirteenth year, you will again become the king's queen.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
आर्तयैतन्मया भीम कृतं बाष्पविमोक्षणम् ।
अपारयन्त्या दुःखानि न राजानमुपालभे ॥१४॥
14. draupadyuvāca ,
ārtayaitanmayā bhīma kṛtaṁ bāṣpavimokṣaṇam ,
apārayantyā duḥkhāni na rājānamupālabhe.
14. draupadī uvāca | ārtayā etat mayā bhīma kṛtam
bāṣpavimokṣaṇam | apārayantyā duḥkhāni na rājānam upālabhe
14. Draupadi said: "O Bhima, I have shed these tears out of distress, being unable to endure these sorrows. I do not blame the king."
विमुक्तेन व्यतीतेन भीमसेन महाबल ।
प्रत्युपस्थितकालस्य कार्यस्यानन्तरो भव ॥१५॥
15. vimuktena vyatītena bhīmasena mahābala ,
pratyupasthitakālasya kāryasyānantaro bhava.
15. vimuktena vyatītena bhīmasena mahābala |
pratyupasthitakālasya kāryasya anantaraḥ bhava
15. O Bhimasena, mighty one, let go of what is past and gone. Be ready for the task whose time has now arrived.
ममेह भीम कैकेयी रूपाभिभवशङ्कया ।
नित्यमुद्विजते राजा कथं नेयादिमामिति ॥१६॥
16. mameha bhīma kaikeyī rūpābhibhavaśaṅkayā ,
nityamudvijate rājā kathaṁ neyādimāmiti.
16. mama iha bhīma kaikeyī rūpābhibhavaśaṅkayā
| nityam udvijate rājā katham neyāt imām iti
16. O Bhima, here, due to Kaikeyi's constant fear of being surpassed in beauty, the king always worries, thinking, 'How will this one (Draupadi) be dealt with?'
तस्या विदित्वा तं भावं स्वयं चानृतदर्शनः ।
कीचकोऽयं सुदुष्टात्मा सदा प्रार्थयते हि माम् ॥१७॥
17. tasyā viditvā taṁ bhāvaṁ svayaṁ cānṛtadarśanaḥ ,
kīcako'yaṁ suduṣṭātmā sadā prārthayate hi mām.
17. tasyāḥ viditvā tam bhāvam svayam ca anṛtadarśanaḥ
kīcakaḥ ayam sudusṭātmā sadā prārthayate hi mām
17. Having understood his intention, and being myself a witness to his deceit, this Kīcaka, whose inner self (ātman) is exceedingly wicked, indeed always solicits me.
तमहं कुपिता भीम पुनः कोपं नियम्य च ।
अब्रुवं कामसंमूढमात्मानं रक्ष कीचक ॥१८॥
18. tamahaṁ kupitā bhīma punaḥ kopaṁ niyamya ca ,
abruvaṁ kāmasaṁmūḍhamātmānaṁ rakṣa kīcaka.
18. tam aham kupitā bhīma punaḥ kopam niyamya ca
abruvam kāmasaṃmūḍham ātmanam rakṣa kīcaka
18. Though I was angered, O fearful Kīcaka, I again restrained my wrath and said to him, who was utterly bewildered by lust, 'Protect your own self (ātman)!'
गन्धर्वाणामहं भार्या पञ्चानां महिषी प्रिया ।
ते त्वां निहन्युर्दुर्धर्षाः शूराः साहसकारिणः ॥१९॥
19. gandharvāṇāmahaṁ bhāryā pañcānāṁ mahiṣī priyā ,
te tvāṁ nihanyurdurdharṣāḥ śūrāḥ sāhasakāriṇaḥ.
19. gandharvāṇām aham bhāryā pañcānām mahiṣī priyā
te tvām nihanyuḥ durdharṣāḥ śūrāḥ sāhasakāriṇaḥ
19. I am the beloved chief wife of five Gandharvas. Those invincible, brave, and valorous ones would kill you.
एवमुक्तः स दुष्टात्मा कीचकः प्रत्युवाच ह ।
नाहं बिभेमि सैरन्ध्रि गन्धर्वाणां शुचिस्मिते ॥२०॥
20. evamuktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā kīcakaḥ pratyuvāca ha ,
nāhaṁ bibhemi sairandhri gandharvāṇāṁ śucismite.
20. evam uktaḥ saḥ duṣṭātmā kīcakaḥ pratyuvāca ha na
aham bibhemi sairandhri gandharvāṇām śucismite
20. Thus addressed, that wicked-minded Kīcaka replied, 'O Sairandhrī, O pure-smiling one, I do not fear the Gandharvas!'
शतं सहस्रमपि वा गन्धर्वाणामहं रणे ।
समागतं हनिष्यामि त्वं भीरु कुरु मे क्षणम् ॥२१॥
21. śataṁ sahasramapi vā gandharvāṇāmahaṁ raṇe ,
samāgataṁ haniṣyāmi tvaṁ bhīru kuru me kṣaṇam.
21. śatam sahasram api vā gandharvāṇām aham raṇe
samāgatam haniṣyāmi tvam bhīru kuru me kṣaṇam
21. I will slay even a hundred or a thousand Gandharvas assembled in battle. You, timid one, just give me a moment.
इत्युक्ते चाब्रुवं सूतं कामातुरमहं पुनः ।
न त्वं प्रतिबलस्तेषां गन्धर्वाणां यशस्विनाम् ॥२२॥
22. ityukte cābruvaṁ sūtaṁ kāmāturamahaṁ punaḥ ,
na tvaṁ pratibalasteṣāṁ gandharvāṇāṁ yaśasvinām.
22. iti ukte ca abruvam sūtam kāmāturam aham punaḥ
na tvam pratibalaḥ teṣām gandharvāṇām yaśasvinām
22. And after this was said, I again spoke to the charioteer (sūta), who was tormented by desire, saying, 'You are not an equal match for those renowned Gandharvas.'
धर्मे स्थितास्मि सततं कुलशीलसमन्विता ।
नेच्छामि कंचिद्वध्यन्तं तेन जीवसि कीचक ॥२३॥
23. dharme sthitāsmi satataṁ kulaśīlasamanvitā ,
necchāmi kaṁcidvadhyantaṁ tena jīvasi kīcaka.
23. dharme sthitā asmi satatam kulaśīlasamanvitā na
icchāmi kañcit vadhyantam tena jīvasi kīcaka
23. I am always established in my natural law (dharma), endowed with good lineage and character. I do not wish for anyone to be killed; it is for that reason, Kīcaka, that you remain alive.
एवमुक्तः स दुष्टात्मा प्रहस्य स्वनवत्तदा ।
न तिष्ठति स्म सन्मार्गे न च धर्मं बुभूषति ॥२४॥
24. evamuktaḥ sa duṣṭātmā prahasya svanavattadā ,
na tiṣṭhati sma sanmārge na ca dharmaṁ bubhūṣati.
24. evam uktaḥ saḥ duṣṭātmā prahasya svanavat tadā
na tiṣṭhati sma sanmārge na ca dharmam bubhūṣati
24. Thus addressed, that evil-minded one laughed loudly then. He did not remain on the right path, nor did he wish to uphold his natural law (dharma).
पापात्मा पापभावश्च कामरागवशानुगः ।
अविनीतश्च दुष्टात्मा प्रत्याख्यातः पुनः पुनः ।
दर्शने दर्शने हन्यात्तथा जह्यां च जीवितम् ॥२५॥
25. pāpātmā pāpabhāvaśca kāmarāgavaśānugaḥ ,
avinītaśca duṣṭātmā pratyākhyātaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
darśane darśane hanyāttathā jahyāṁ ca jīvitam.
25. pāpātmā pāpabhāvaḥ ca kāmarāgavaśānugaḥ
| avinītaḥ ca duṣṭātmā
pratyākhyātaḥ punaḥ punaḥ | darśane
darśane hanyāt tathā jahyām ca jīvitam
25. He, the sinful-souled (pāpātman) one, with a sinful disposition, enslaved by desire and passion, undisciplined, and evil-minded, has been rejected repeatedly. I would kill him at every sight, and in doing so, I would even give up my own life.
तद्धर्मे यतमानानां महान्धर्मो नशिष्यति ।
समयं रक्षमाणानां भार्या वो न भविष्यति ॥२६॥
26. taddharme yatamānānāṁ mahāndharmo naśiṣyati ,
samayaṁ rakṣamāṇānāṁ bhāryā vo na bhaviṣyati.
26. tat dharme yatamānānām mahān dharmaḥ naśiṣyati
| samayam rakṣamāṇānām bhāryā vaḥ na bhaviṣyati
26. A great natural law (dharma) will be destroyed for those who strive for a specific natural law (dharma). And for those protecting their covenant (samaya), wives will not be available to them.
भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता ।
प्रजायां रक्ष्यमाणायामात्मा भवति रक्षितः ॥२७॥
27. bhāryāyāṁ rakṣyamāṇāyāṁ prajā bhavati rakṣitā ,
prajāyāṁ rakṣyamāṇāyāmātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ.
27. bhāryāyām rakṣyamāṇāyām prajā bhavati rakṣitā
| prajāyām rakṣyamāṇāyām ātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ
27. When the wife is protected, the progeny is protected. When the progeny is protected, the self (ātman) is protected.
वदतां वर्णधर्मांश्च ब्राह्मणानां हि मे श्रुतम् ।
क्षत्रियस्य सदा धर्मो नान्यः शत्रुनिबर्हणात् ॥२८॥
28. vadatāṁ varṇadharmāṁśca brāhmaṇānāṁ hi me śrutam ,
kṣatriyasya sadā dharmo nānyaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāt.
28. vadatām varṇadharmān ca brāhmaṇānām hi me śrutam |
kṣatriyasya sadā dharmaḥ na anyaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāt
28. Indeed, I have heard from the Brahmins speaking of the duties (dharma) of the social classes (varṇa). For a Kṣatriya, the constant natural law (dharma) is none other than the destruction of enemies.
पश्यतो धर्मराजस्य कीचको मां पदावधीत् ।
तव चैव समक्षं वै भीमसेन महाबल ॥२९॥
29. paśyato dharmarājasya kīcako māṁ padāvadhīt ,
tava caiva samakṣaṁ vai bhīmasena mahābala.
29. paśyataḥ dharmarājasya kīcakaḥ mām padā avadhīt
tava ca eva samakṣam vai bhīmasena mahābala
29. Even while King Yudhiṣṭhira, the upholder of natural law (dharma), was watching, Kīcaka kicked me. And indeed, O mighty Bhīmasena, it happened right before your very eyes.
त्वया ह्यहं परित्राता तस्माद्घोराज्जटासुरात् ।
जयद्रथं तथैव त्वमजैषीर्भ्रातृभिः सह ॥३०॥
30. tvayā hyahaṁ paritrātā tasmādghorājjaṭāsurāt ,
jayadrathaṁ tathaiva tvamajaiṣīrbhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
30. tvayā hi aham paritrātā tasmāt ghorāt jaṭāsurāt
jayadratham tathā eva tvam ajaiṣīḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
30. Indeed, you protected me from that terrible Jaṭāsura. And in the same way, you conquered Jayadratha along with your brothers.
जहीममपि पापं त्वं योऽयं मामवमन्यते ।
कीचको राजवाल्लभ्याच्छोककृन्मम भारत ॥३१॥
31. jahīmamapi pāpaṁ tvaṁ yo'yaṁ māmavamanyate ,
kīcako rājavāllabhyācchokakṛnmama bhārata.
31. jahi imam api pāpam tvam yaḥ ayam mām avamanyate
kīcakaḥ rājavāllabhyāt śokakṛt mama bhārata
31. You must kill this sinful one as well, this Kīcaka, who, due to the king's favor, disrespects me and causes me such sorrow, O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata).
तमेवं कामसंमत्तं भिन्धि कुम्भमिवाश्मनि ।
यो निमित्तमनर्थानां बहूनां मम भारत ॥३२॥
32. tamevaṁ kāmasaṁmattaṁ bhindhi kumbhamivāśmani ,
yo nimittamanarthānāṁ bahūnāṁ mama bhārata.
32. tam evam kāmasaṃmattam bhindhi kumbham iva aśmani
yaḥ nimittam anarthānām bahūnām mama bhārata
32. Thus, break him, this Kīcaka, who is maddened by desire, just like you would break a pot on a stone. He is indeed the cause of my many misfortunes, O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata).
तं चेज्जीवन्तमादित्यः प्रातरभ्युदयिष्यति ।
विषमालोड्य पास्यामि मा कीचकवशं गमम् ।
श्रेयो हि मरणं मह्यं भीमसेन तवाग्रतः ॥३३॥
33. taṁ cejjīvantamādityaḥ prātarabhyudayiṣyati ,
viṣamāloḍya pāsyāmi mā kīcakavaśaṁ gamam ,
śreyo hi maraṇaṁ mahyaṁ bhīmasena tavāgrataḥ.
33. tam cet jīvantam ādityaḥ prātaḥ
abhyudayiṣyati viṣam āloḍya pāsyāmi
mā kīcakavaśam gamam śreyaḥ hi
maraṇam mahyam bhīmasena tava agrataḥ
33. If the sun rises tomorrow morning finding me still alive, I will mix and drink poison. Let me not fall under Kīcaka's control. Indeed, Bhīmasena, death in your presence is far better for me.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्कृष्णा भीमस्योरः समाश्रिता ।
भीमश्च तां परिष्वज्य महत्सान्त्वं प्रयुज्य च ।
कीचकं मनसागच्छत्सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् ॥३४॥
34. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā prārudatkṛṣṇā bhīmasyoraḥ samāśritā ,
bhīmaśca tāṁ pariṣvajya mahatsāntvaṁ prayujya ca ,
kīcakaṁ manasāgacchatsṛkkiṇī parisaṁlihan.
34. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā prārudat
kṛṣṇā bhīmasya uraḥ samāśritā bhīmaḥ ca tām
pariṣvajya mahat sāntvam prayujya ca
kīcakam manasā agacchat sṛkkiṇī parisaṃlihan
34. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) wept, having taken refuge on Bhīma's chest. Bhīma, embracing her and offering great comfort, mentally approached Kīcaka, licking the corners of his mouth.
