विदितं भवतामेतद्यथा वृत्तः कुरुक्षयः ।
ममापराधात्तत्सर्वमिति ज्ञेयं तु कौरवाः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
viditaṁ bhavatāmetadyathā vṛttaḥ kurukṣayaḥ ,
mamāparādhāttatsarvamiti jñeyaṁ tu kauravāḥ.

1. Dhritarashtra said: "This is known to all of you, how the destruction of the Kurus occurred. However, O Kauravas, it should be understood that all of that was due to my fault."
योऽहं दुष्टमतिं मूढं ज्ञातीनां भयवर्धनम् ।
दुर्योधनं कौरवाणामाधिपत्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥२॥
2. yo'haṁ duṣṭamatiṁ mūḍhaṁ jñātīnāṁ bhayavardhanam ,
duryodhanaṁ kauravāṇāmādhipatye'bhyaṣecayam.
2. yaḥ aham duṣṭamatim mūḍham jñātīnām bhayavardhanam
duryodhanam kauravāṇām ādhipatye abhyaṣecayam

2. I, who anointed that evil-minded, foolish Duryodhana, the one who increased the fear of his own kinsmen, to the sovereignty of the Kauravas.
यच्चाहं वासुदेवस्य वाक्यं नाश्रौषमर्थवत् ।
वध्यतां साध्वयं पापः सामात्य इति दुर्मतिः ॥३॥
3. yaccāhaṁ vāsudevasya vākyaṁ nāśrauṣamarthavat ,
vadhyatāṁ sādhvayaṁ pāpaḥ sāmātya iti durmatiḥ.
3. yat ca aham vāsudevasya vākyam na aśrauṣam arthavat
vadhyatām sādhu ayam pāpaḥ sa-amātyaḥ iti durmatiḥ
3. ca aham durmatiḥ,
vāsudevasya arthavat vākyam na aśrauṣam,
(yat vākyam āsīt) "sādhu ayam pāpaḥ sa-amātyaḥ vadhyatām" iti
3. And I, of foolish intellect (durmati), did not heed the meaningful words of Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), which were, 'Indeed, let this sinner, along with his ministers, be slain!'
पुत्रस्नेहाभिभूतश्च हितमुक्तो मनीषिभिः ।
विदुरेणाथ भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च कृपेण च ॥४॥
4. putrasnehābhibhūtaśca hitamukto manīṣibhiḥ ,
vidureṇātha bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca.
4. putrasnehabhibhūtaḥ ca hitam uktaḥ manīṣibhiḥ
vidureṇa atha bhīṣmeṇa droṇeṇa ca kṛpeṇa ca
4. putrasnehabhibhūtaḥ ca manīṣibhiḥ vidureṇa
atha bhīṣmeṇa droṇeṇa ca kṛpeṇa ca hitam uktaḥ
4. Overwhelmed by affection for his sons, he was given beneficial advice by the wise ones: by Vidura, also by Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa.
पदे पदे भगवता व्यासेन च महात्मना ।
संजयेनाथ गान्धार्या तदिदं तप्यतेऽद्य माम् ॥५॥
5. pade pade bhagavatā vyāsena ca mahātmanā ,
saṁjayenātha gāndhāryā tadidaṁ tapyate'dya mām.
5. pade pade bhagavatā vyāsena ca mahātmanā
saṃjayena atha gāndhāryā tat idam tapyate adya mām
5. bhagavatā vyāsena ca mahātmanā saṃjayena atha
gāndhāryā pade pade tat idam adya mām tapyate
5. And repeatedly, by the revered (bhagavatā) Vyasa, the great-souled (mahātman) one; also by Sanjaya, and by Gandhari - all of this torments me today.
यच्चाहं पाण्डुपुत्रेषु गुणवत्सु महात्मसु ।
न दत्तवाञ्श्रियं दीप्तां पितृपैतामहीमिमाम् ॥६॥
6. yaccāhaṁ pāṇḍuputreṣu guṇavatsu mahātmasu ,
na dattavāñśriyaṁ dīptāṁ pitṛpaitāmahīmimām.
6. yat ca aham pāṇḍuputreṣu guṇavatsu mahātmasu
na dattavān śriyam dīptām pitṛpaitāmahīm imām
6. yat ca aham pāṇḍuputreṣu guṇavatsu mahātmasu
dīptām pitṛpaitāmahīm imām śriyam na dattavān
6. And because I did not grant this splendid, ancestral glory (śrī) to the virtuous, great-souled (mahātman) sons of Pandu.
विनाशं पश्यमानो हि सर्वराज्ञां गदाग्रजः ।
एतच्छ्रेयः स परमममन्यत जनार्दनः ॥७॥
7. vināśaṁ paśyamāno hi sarvarājñāṁ gadāgrajaḥ ,
etacchreyaḥ sa paramamamanyata janārdanaḥ.
7. vināśam paśyamānaḥ hi sarvarājñām gadāgrajaḥ
etat śreyaḥ saḥ paramam amanyata janārdanaḥ
7. hi sarvarājñām vināśam paśyamānaḥ gadāgrajaḥ
janārdanaḥ saḥ etat paramam śreyaḥ amanyata
7. Indeed, seeing the destruction of all kings, Janardana (Krishna), the elder brother of Gada, considered this (course of action) to be the supreme good.
सोऽहमेतान्यलीकानि निवृत्तान्यात्मनः सदा ।
हृदये शल्यभूतानि धारयामि सहस्रशः ॥८॥
8. so'hametānyalīkāni nivṛttānyātmanaḥ sadā ,
hṛdaye śalyabhūtāni dhārayāmi sahasraśaḥ.
8. saḥ aham etāni alīkāni nivṛttāni ātmanaḥ sadā
hṛdaye śalyabhūtāni dhārayāmi sahasraśaḥ
8. saḥ aham sadā ātmanaḥ nivṛttāni etāni alīkāni
śalyabhūtāni hṛdaye sahasraśaḥ dhārayāmi
8. Though these illusions have receded from my inner self (ātman), I, myself, always carry them in my heart like thousands of painful darts.
विशेषतस्तु दह्यामि वर्षं पञ्चदशं हि वै ।
अस्य पापस्य शुद्ध्यर्थं नियतोऽस्मि सुदुर्मतिः ॥९॥
9. viśeṣatastu dahyāmi varṣaṁ pañcadaśaṁ hi vai ,
asya pāpasya śuddhyarthaṁ niyato'smi sudurmatiḥ.
9. viśeṣataḥ tu dahyāmi varṣam pañcadaśam hi vai
asya pāpasya śuddhyartham niyataḥ asmi sudurmatiḥ
9. tu viśeṣataḥ hi vai varṣam pañcadaśam dahyāmi.
asya pāpasya śuddhyartham sudurmatiḥ niyataḥ asmi.
9. But especially, for fifteen years now, I have indeed been burning (suffering intensely). For the purification of this sin, I, a very evil-minded person, remain bound (by my actions).
चतुर्थे नियते काले कदाचिदपि चाष्टमे ।
तृष्णाविनयनं भुञ्जे गान्धारी वेद तन्मम ॥१०॥
10. caturthe niyate kāle kadācidapi cāṣṭame ,
tṛṣṇāvinayanaṁ bhuñje gāndhārī veda tanmama.
10. caturthe niyate kāle kadācit api ca aṣṭame
tṛṣṇāvinayanam bhuñje gāndhārī veda tat mama
10. caturthe niyate kāle,
ca kadācit api aṣṭame,
tṛṣṇāvinayanam bhuñje.
gāndhārī tat mama veda.
10. At the appointed fourth meal time, and sometimes even at the eighth, I partake of food only to satisfy my hunger. Gandhari knows this about me.
करोत्याहारमिति मां सर्वः परिजनः सदा ।
युधिष्ठिरभयाद्वेत्ति भृशं तप्यति पाण्डवः ॥११॥
11. karotyāhāramiti māṁ sarvaḥ parijanaḥ sadā ,
yudhiṣṭhirabhayādvetti bhṛśaṁ tapyati pāṇḍavaḥ.
11. karoti āhāram iti mām sarvaḥ parijanaḥ sadā
yudhiṣṭhirabhayāt vetti bhṛśam tapyati pāṇḍavaḥ
11. sarvaḥ parijanaḥ sadā mām āhāram karoti iti vetti.
yudhiṣṭhirabhayāt ca pāṇḍavaḥ bhṛśam tapyati.
11. All my attendants always know that I merely consume food (to sustain myself). They understand this out of fear of Yudhishthira, and Yudhishthira, the Pandava, suffers greatly (seeing my state).
भूमौ शये जप्यपरो दर्भेष्वजिनसंवृतः ।
नियमव्यपदेशेन गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१२॥
12. bhūmau śaye japyaparo darbheṣvajinasaṁvṛtaḥ ,
niyamavyapadeśena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī.
12. bhūmau śaye japyaparaḥ darbheṣu ajinasaṃvṛtaḥ
niyamavyapadeśena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
12. yaśasvinī gāndhārī ca niyamavyapadeśena
bhūmau darbheṣu ajinasaṃvṛtaḥ japyaparaḥ śaye
12. And the illustrious Gandhari, devoted to silent recitation, lies on the ground, covered with a deerskin on kuśa grass, under the guise of observing specific religious vows.
हतं पुत्रशतं शूरं संग्रामेष्वपलायिनम् ।
नानुतप्यामि तच्चाहं क्षत्रधर्मं हि तं विदुः ।
इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजानमभ्यभाषत कौरवः ॥१३॥
13. hataṁ putraśataṁ śūraṁ saṁgrāmeṣvapalāyinam ,
nānutapyāmi taccāhaṁ kṣatradharmaṁ hi taṁ viduḥ ,
ityuktvā dharmarājānamabhyabhāṣata kauravaḥ.
13. hatam putraśatam śūram saṃgrāmeṣu
apalāyinam na anutapyāmi tat ca aham
kṣatradharmam hi tam viduḥ iti uktvā
dharmarājānam abhyabhāṣata kauravaḥ
13. aham tat śūram saṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinam
hatam putraśatam ca na anutapyāmi
hi tam kṣatradharmam viduḥ iti uktvā
kauravaḥ dharmarājānam abhyabhāṣata
13. I do not regret that a hundred heroic sons, who never fled in battles, were slain; for people consider that to be the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatriya). Having spoken thus, the Kaurava (Dhritarashtra) addressed Yudhishthira, the king who embodies righteousness (dharma).
भद्रं ते यादवीमातर्वाक्यं चेदं निबोध मे ।
सुखमस्म्युषितः पुत्र त्वया सुपरिपालितः ॥१४॥
14. bhadraṁ te yādavīmātarvākyaṁ cedaṁ nibodha me ,
sukhamasmyuṣitaḥ putra tvayā suparipālitaḥ.
14. bhadram te yādavīmātar vākyam ca idam nibodha
me sukham asmi uṣitaḥ putra tvayā suparipālitaḥ
14. yādavīmātar te bhadram ca idam me vākyam nibodha
putra aham tvayā suparipālitaḥ sukham uṣitaḥ asmi
14. May good fortune be with you, O mother of the Yadava clan! And listen to this word of mine: O son, I have lived happily, well-cared for by you.
महादानानि दत्तानि श्राद्धानि च पुनः पुनः ।
प्रकृष्टं मे वयः पुत्र पुण्यं चीर्णं यथाबलम् ।
गान्धारी हतपुत्रेयं धैर्येणोदीक्षते च माम् ॥१५॥
15. mahādānāni dattāni śrāddhāni ca punaḥ punaḥ ,
prakṛṣṭaṁ me vayaḥ putra puṇyaṁ cīrṇaṁ yathābalam ,
gāndhārī hataputreyaṁ dhairyeṇodīkṣate ca mām.
15. mahādānāni dattāni śrāddhāni ca punaḥ
punaḥ prakṛṣṭam me vayaḥ putra
puṇyam cīrṇam yathābalam gāndhārī
hataputrā iyam dhairyeṇa udīkṣate ca mām
15. mahādānāni dattāni punaḥ punaḥ ca
śrāddhāni (dattāni) me vayaḥ prakṛṣṭam putra
yathābalam puṇyam cīrṇam iyam hataputrā
gāndhārī ca dhairyeṇa mām udīkṣate
15. Great donations (dāna) have been made, and śrāddhas again and again. My age is advanced, O son, and I have performed meritorious deeds according to my strength. And this Gandhari, whose sons are slain, patiently awaits me.
द्रौपद्या ह्यपकर्तारस्तव चैश्वर्यहारिणः ।
समतीता नृशंसास्ते धर्मेण निहता युधि ॥१६॥
16. draupadyā hyapakartārastava caiśvaryahāriṇaḥ ,
samatītā nṛśaṁsāste dharmeṇa nihatā yudhi.
16. draupadyāḥ hi apakartāraḥ tava ca aiśvaryahāriṇaḥ
samatītāḥ nṛśaṃsāḥ te dharmeṇa nihatāḥ yudhi
16. hi draupadyāḥ ca tava aiśvaryahāriṇaḥ nṛśaṃsāḥ
te apakartāraḥ yudhi dharmeṇa nihatāḥ samatītāḥ
16. Indeed, those cruel villains who wronged Draupadi and robbed you of your sovereignty have perished, struck down in battle by natural law (dharma).
न तेषु प्रतिकर्तव्यं पश्यामि कुरुनन्दन ।
सर्वे शस्त्रजिताँल्लोकान्गतास्तेऽभिमुखं हताः ॥१७॥
17. na teṣu pratikartavyaṁ paśyāmi kurunandana ,
sarve śastrajitāँllokāngatāste'bhimukhaṁ hatāḥ.
17. na teṣu pratikartavyaṃ paśyāmi kurunandana sarve
śastrajitān lokān gatāḥ te abhimukhaṃ hatāḥ
17. kurunandana teṣu pratikartavyaṃ na paśyāmi sarve
te abhimukhaṃ hatāḥ śastrajitān lokān gatāḥ
17. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), I see no need for retaliation against them. All of them, having been slain directly facing the enemy, have attained the worlds that are won by warriors.
आत्मनस्तु हितं मुख्यं प्रतिकर्तव्यमद्य मे ।
गान्धार्याश्चैव राजेन्द्र तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. ātmanastu hitaṁ mukhyaṁ pratikartavyamadya me ,
gāndhāryāścaiva rājendra tadanujñātumarhasi.
18. ātmanaḥ tu hitaṃ mukhyaṃ pratikartavyaṃ adya me
gāndhāryāḥ ca eva rājendra tat anujñātum arhasi
18. rājendra tu adya me ātmanaḥ ca gāndhāryāḥ eva
mukhyaṃ hitaṃ pratikartavyaṃ tat anujñātum arhasi
18. But now, O king of kings (rājendra), my primary duty is to act for my own welfare and also for Gandhari. You ought to permit that.
त्वं हि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठः सततं धर्मवत्सलः ।
राजा गुरुः प्राणभृतां तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥१९॥
19. tvaṁ hi dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ satataṁ dharmavatsalaḥ ,
rājā guruḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ tasmādetadbravīmyaham.
19. tvaṃ hi dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ satataṃ dharmavatsalaḥ
rājā guruḥ prāṇabhṛtāṃ tasmāt etat bravīmi aham
19. hi tvaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ satataṃ dharmavatsalaḥ
rājā guruḥ prāṇabhṛtāṃ tasmāt aham etat bravīmi
19. For you are indeed the best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), constantly devoted to righteousness (dharma). You are the king and preceptor of all living beings, therefore, I speak this.
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया वीर संश्रयेयं वनान्यहम् ।
चीरवल्कलभृद्राजन्गान्धार्या सहितोऽनया ।
तवाशिषः प्रयुञ्जानो भविष्यामि वनेचरः ॥२०॥
20. anujñātastvayā vīra saṁśrayeyaṁ vanānyaham ,
cīravalkalabhṛdrājangāndhāryā sahito'nayā ,
tavāśiṣaḥ prayuñjāno bhaviṣyāmi vanecaraḥ.
20. anujñātaḥ tvayā vīra saṃśrayeyam
vanāni aham cīravalkalabhṛt rājan
gāndhāryā sahitaḥ anayā tava āśiṣaḥ
prayuñjānaḥ bhaviṣyāmi vanacaraḥ
20. vīra rājan tvayā anujñātaḥ aham
anayā gāndhāryā sahitaḥ cīravalkalabhṛt
vanāni saṃśrayeyam tava āśiṣaḥ
prayuñjānaḥ vanacaraḥ bhaviṣyāmi
20. O hero, with your permission, I would go to the forests. O king, wearing bark garments, accompanied by this Gāndhārī, I will live as a forest dweller, always uttering your blessings.
उचितं नः कुले तात सर्वेषां भरतर्षभ ।
पुत्रेष्वैश्वर्यमाधाय वयसोऽन्ते वनं नृप ॥२१॥
21. ucitaṁ naḥ kule tāta sarveṣāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
putreṣvaiśvaryamādhāya vayaso'nte vanaṁ nṛpa.
21. ucitam naḥ kule tāta sarveṣām bharatarṣabha
putreṣu aiśvaryam ādhāya vayasaḥ ante vanam nṛpa
21. tāta bharatarṣabha nṛpa naḥ kule sarveṣām ucitam
putreṣu aiśvaryam ādhāya vayasaḥ ante vanam
21. O dear one, O best of Bharatas, O king, it is the tradition in our family for everyone, at the end of their life, to enter the forest after establishing their sons in sovereignty.
तत्राहं वायुभक्षो वा निराहारोऽपि वा वसन् ।
पत्न्या सहानया वीर चरिष्यामि तपः परम् ॥२२॥
22. tatrāhaṁ vāyubhakṣo vā nirāhāro'pi vā vasan ,
patnyā sahānayā vīra cariṣyāmi tapaḥ param.
22. tatra aham vāyubhakṣaḥ vā nirāhāraḥ api vā vasan
patnyā saha anayā vīra cariṣyāmi tapaḥ param
22. vīra aham tatra vā vāyubhakṣaḥ vā api nirāhāraḥ
vasan anayā patnyā saha param tapaḥ cariṣyāmi
22. O hero, there I shall dwell, subsisting on air or even completely without food, and with this wife, I will perform the highest asceticism (tapas).
त्वं चापि फलभाक्तात तपसः पार्थिवो ह्यसि ।
फलभाजो हि राजानः कल्याणस्येतरस्य वा ॥२३॥
23. tvaṁ cāpi phalabhāktāta tapasaḥ pārthivo hyasi ,
phalabhājo hi rājānaḥ kalyāṇasyetarasya vā.
23. tvam ca api phalabhāk tāta tapasaḥ pārthivaḥ hi
asi phalabhājaḥ hi rājānaḥ kalyāṇasya itarasya vā
23. tāta tvam ca api tapasaḥ phalabhāk asi hi pārthivaḥ
hi rājānaḥ kalyāṇasya vā itarasya phalabhājaḥ
23. And you, O dear one, also become a partaker of the fruit of this asceticism (tapas), for you are a king. Indeed, kings are always recipients of the results, whether good or evil.
