अत्यद्भुतमहं मन्ये भीमसेनस्य विक्रमम् ।
यत्कर्णं योधयामास समरे लघुविक्रमम् ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
atyadbhutamahaṁ manye bhīmasenasya vikramam ,
yatkarṇaṁ yodhayāmāsa samare laghuvikramam.

1. Dhritarashtra said: I consider Bhimasena's valor to be exceedingly wonderful, because he fought Karna, who was known for his swift prowess, in battle.
त्रिदशानपि चोद्युक्तान्सर्वशस्त्रधरान्युधि ।
वारयेद्यो रणे कर्णः सयक्षासुरमानवान् ॥२॥
2. tridaśānapi codyuktānsarvaśastradharānyudhi ,
vārayedyo raṇe karṇaḥ sayakṣāsuramānavān.

2. Karna, who in battle could repel even the gods (tridaśāḥ) themselves, poised for action and bearing all weapons, as well as Yakshas, Asuras, and humans.
स कथं पाण्डवं युद्धे भ्राजमानमिव श्रिया ।
नातरत्संयुगे तात तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥३॥
3. sa kathaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ yuddhe bhrājamānamiva śriyā ,
nātaratsaṁyuge tāta tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
3. saḥ katham pāṇḍavam yuddhe bhrājamānam iva śriyā
| na atarat saṃyuge tāta tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya

tāta,
tat mama ācakṣva saḥ śriyā bhrājamānam iva pāṇḍavam yuddhe saṃyuge katham na atarat?
3. Sanjaya, dear one (tāta), explain this to me: How is it that Karna did not overcome the Pāṇḍava, who was shining with splendor as if radiating light, in that combat (saṃyuga)?
कथं च युद्धं भूयोऽभूत्तयोः प्राणदुरोदरे ।
अत्र मन्ये समायत्तो जयो वाजय एव वा ॥४॥
4. kathaṁ ca yuddhaṁ bhūyo'bhūttayoḥ prāṇadurodare ,
atra manye samāyatto jayo vājaya eva vā.
4. katham ca yuddham bhūyaḥ abhūt tayoḥ prāṇa-durodare
| atra manye samāyattaḥ jayaḥ vā ajayaḥ eva vā
4. ca katham tayoḥ prāṇa-durodare yuddham bhūyaḥ abhūt? atra jayaḥ vā ajayaḥ eva vā samāyattaḥ iti manye.
4. And how did the battle (yuddha) between them, a deadly game of dice (prāṇadurodara) with their lives as stakes, unfold again? I believe that in this (atra), either victory (jaya) or defeat (ajaya) truly lay.
कर्णं प्राप्य रणे सूत मम पुत्रः सुयोधनः ।
जेतुमुत्सहते पार्थान्सगोविन्दान्ससात्वतान् ॥५॥
5. karṇaṁ prāpya raṇe sūta mama putraḥ suyodhanaḥ ,
jetumutsahate pārthānsagovindānsasātvatān.

jetum utsahate pārthān sa-govindān sa-sātvatān
5. sūta,
raṇe karṇam prāpya,
mama putraḥ suyodhanaḥ sa-govindān sa-sātvatān pārthān jetum utsahate.
5. O charioteer (sūta), my son Suyodhana, having acquired Karṇa's support in battle, is eager to conquer the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas) along with Govinda and the Sātvatas.
श्रुत्वा तु निर्जितं कर्णमसकृद्भीमकर्मणा ।
भीमसेनेन समरे मोह आविशतीव माम् ॥६॥
6. śrutvā tu nirjitaṁ karṇamasakṛdbhīmakarmaṇā ,
bhīmasenena samare moha āviśatīva mām.
6. śrutvā tu nirjitam karṇam asakṛt bhīma-karmaṇā
bhīmasenena samare mohaḥ āviśati iva mām
6. tu,
asakṛt bhīma-karmaṇā bhīmasenena samare karṇam nirjitam śrutvā,
mohaḥ mām āviśati iva.
6. But hearing that Karṇa has been repeatedly defeated in battle by Bhīmasena, whose actions are dreadful, delusion (moha) seems to overcome me.
विनष्टान्कौरवान्मन्ये मम पुत्रस्य दुर्नयैः ।
न हि कर्णो महेष्वासान्पार्थाञ्जेष्यति संजय ॥७॥
7. vinaṣṭānkauravānmanye mama putrasya durnayaiḥ ,
na hi karṇo maheṣvāsānpārthāñjeṣyati saṁjaya.
7. vinaṣṭān kauravān manye mama putrasya durnayaiḥ na
hi karṇaḥ mahā-iṣv-āsān pārthān jeṣyati saṃjaya
7. saṃjaya,
mama putrasya durnayaiḥ kauravān vinaṣṭān manye.
hi karṇaḥ mahā-iṣv-āsān pārthān na jeṣyati.
7. O Saṃjaya, I believe the Kauravas are doomed (literally, destroyed) due to the evil policies of my son. For Karṇa will certainly not conquer the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas), who are great archers.
कृतवान्यानि युद्धानि कर्णः पाण्डुसुतैः सह ।
सर्वत्र पाण्डवाः कर्णमजयन्त रणाजिरे ॥८॥
8. kṛtavānyāni yuddhāni karṇaḥ pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha ,
sarvatra pāṇḍavāḥ karṇamajayanta raṇājire.
8. kṛtavān yāni yuddhāni karṇaḥ pāṇḍu-sutaiḥ saha
sarvatra pāṇḍavāḥ karṇam ajayanta raṇa-ajire
8. karṇaḥ yāni yuddhāni pāṇḍu-sutaiḥ saha kṛtavān,
(teṣu) sarvatra raṇa-ajire pāṇḍavāḥ karṇam ajayanta.
8. In all the battles that Karṇa fought alongside the sons of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍavas), the Pāṇḍavas consistently defeated Karṇa on the battlefield.
अजय्याः पाण्डवास्तात देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
न च तद्बुध्यते मन्दः पुत्रो दुर्योधनो मम ॥९॥
9. ajayyāḥ pāṇḍavāstāta devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
na ca tadbudhyate mandaḥ putro duryodhano mama.
9. ajayyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tāta devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ na
ca tat budhyate mandaḥ putraḥ duryodhanaḥ mama
9. tāta devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ api pāṇḍavāḥ ajayyāḥ ca
mama mandaḥ putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tat na budhyate
9. O dear one, the Pāṇḍavas are unconquerable even by the gods, along with Indra. But my foolish son Duryodhana does not comprehend that.
धनं धनेश्वरस्येव हृत्वा पार्थस्य मे सुतः ।
मधुप्रेप्सुरिवाबुद्धिः प्रपातं नावबुध्यते ॥१०॥
10. dhanaṁ dhaneśvarasyeva hṛtvā pārthasya me sutaḥ ,
madhuprepsurivābuddhiḥ prapātaṁ nāvabudhyate.
10. dhanam dhaneśvarasya iva hṛtvā pārthasya me sutaḥ
madhuprepsuḥ iva abuddhiḥ prapātam na avabudhyate
10. me abuddhiḥ sutaḥ,
dhaneśvarasya iva pārthasya dhanam hṛtvā,
madhuprepsuḥ iva,
prapātam na avabudhyate
10. My senseless son, having seized Pārtha's wealth as if it were the lord of wealth Kubera's, does not perceive the precipice, just like someone yearning for honey [who overlooks danger].
निकृत्या निकृतिप्रज्ञो राज्यं हृत्वा महात्मनाम् ।
जितानित्येव मन्वानः पाण्डवानवमन्यते ॥११॥
11. nikṛtyā nikṛtiprajño rājyaṁ hṛtvā mahātmanām ,
jitānityeva manvānaḥ pāṇḍavānavamanyate.
11. nikṛtyā nikṛtiprajñaḥ rājyam hṛtvā mahātmanām
jitāni iti eva manvānaḥ pāṇḍavān avamanyate
11. nikṛtyā,
nikṛtiprajñaḥ,
mahātmanām (pāṇḍavānām) rājyam hṛtvā,
jitāni iti eva manvānaḥ (san),
pāṇḍavān avamanyate
11. With deceit, that cunning individual, having seized the kingdom belonging to the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas, disregards them, believing, 'they are indeed conquered'.
पुत्रस्नेहाभिभूतेन मया चाप्यकृतात्मना ।
धर्मे स्थिता महात्मानो निकृताः पाण्डुनन्दनाः ॥१२॥
12. putrasnehābhibhūtena mayā cāpyakṛtātmanā ,
dharme sthitā mahātmāno nikṛtāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ.
12. putrasnehābhibhūtena mayā ca api akṛtātmanā
dharme sthitāḥ mahātmānaḥ nikṛtāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ
12. ca putrasnehābhibhūtena akṛtātmanā mayā,
dharme sthitāḥ mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ api nikṛtāḥ
12. And by me, whose being (ātman) is undisciplined and who is overcome by affection for my son, the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas, who abide by their intrinsic nature (dharma), have been wronged.
शमकामः सदा पार्थो दीर्घप्रेक्षी युधिष्ठिरः ।
अशक्त इति मन्वानैः पुत्रैर्मम निराकृतः ॥१३॥
13. śamakāmaḥ sadā pārtho dīrghaprekṣī yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
aśakta iti manvānaiḥ putrairmama nirākṛtaḥ.
13. śamakāmaḥ sadā pārthaḥ dīrghaprekṣī yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
aśaktaḥ iti manvānāiḥ putraiḥ mama nirākṛtaḥ
13. mama putraiḥ śamakāmaḥ sadā dīrghaprekṣī
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ aśaktaḥ iti manvānāiḥ nirākṛtaḥ
13. My sons rejected Yudhiṣṭhira, who was always desirous of peace and far-sighted, considering him powerless.
तानि दुःखान्यनेकानि विप्रकारांश्च सर्वशः ।
हृदि कृत्वा महाबाहुर्भीमोऽयुध्यत सूतजम् ॥१४॥
14. tāni duḥkhānyanekāni viprakārāṁśca sarvaśaḥ ,
hṛdi kṛtvā mahābāhurbhīmo'yudhyata sūtajam.
14. tāni duḥkhāni anekāni viprakārān ca sarvaśaḥ
hṛdi kṛtvā mahābāhuḥ bhīmaḥ ayudhyata sūtajam
14. mahābāhuḥ bhīmaḥ tāni anekāni duḥkhāni sarvaśaḥ
viprakārān ca hṛdi kṛtvā sūtajam ayudhyata
14. Having taken all those many sorrows and insults entirely to heart, the mighty-armed Bhīma fought against the son of a charioteer (Karṇa).
तस्मान्मे संजय ब्रूहि कर्णभीमौ यथा रणे ।
अयुध्येतां युधि श्रेष्ठौ परस्परवधैषिणौ ॥१५॥
15. tasmānme saṁjaya brūhi karṇabhīmau yathā raṇe ,
ayudhyetāṁ yudhi śreṣṭhau parasparavadhaiṣiṇau.
15. tasmāt me sañjaya brūhi karṇabhīmāu yathā raṇe
ayudhyetām yudhi śreṣṭhāu parasparavadhaiṣiṇāu
15. sañjaya tasmāt me brūhi yathā yudhi śreṣṭhāu
parasparavadhaiṣiṇāu karṇabhīmāu raṇe ayudhyetām
15. Therefore, Sañjaya, tell me how Karṇa and Bhīma, both foremost in battle and desirous of killing each other, fought in the fray.
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्यथा वृत्तः संग्रामः कर्णभीमयोः ।
परस्परवधप्रेप्स्वोर्वने कुञ्जरयोरिव ॥१६॥
16. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanyathā vṛttaḥ saṁgrāmaḥ karṇabhīmayoḥ ,
parasparavadhaprepsvorvane kuñjarayoriva.
16. sañjaya uvāca śṛṇu rājan yathā vṛttaḥ saṅgrāmaḥ
karṇabhīmayoḥ parasparavadhaprepṣvoḥ vane kuñjarayoḥ iva
16. sañjaya uvāca rājan śṛṇu yathā parasparavadhaprepṣvoḥ
vane kuñjarayoḥ iva karṇabhīmayoḥ saṅgrāmaḥ vṛttaḥ
16. Sañjaya said: O King, listen to how the battle between Karṇa and Bhīma, both eager to kill each other, unfolded, just like two elephants in a forest.
राजन्वैकर्तनो भीमं क्रुद्धः क्रुद्धमरिंदमम् ।
पराक्रान्तं पराक्रम्य विव्याध त्रिंशता शरैः ॥१७॥
17. rājanvaikartano bhīmaṁ kruddhaḥ kruddhamariṁdamam ,
parākrāntaṁ parākramya vivyādha triṁśatā śaraiḥ.
17. rājan vaikartanaḥ bhīmam kruddhaḥ kruddham ariṃdamam
parākrāntam parākramya vivyādha triṃśatā śaraiḥ
17. rājan kruddhaḥ vaikartanaḥ parākramya kruddham
ariṃdamam parākrāntam bhīmam triṃśatā śaraiḥ vivyādha
17. O King, the enraged Karṇa, having powerfully attacked the enraged and mighty subduer of enemies Bhīma, pierced him with thirty arrows.
महावेगैः प्रसन्नाग्रैः शातकुम्भपरिष्कृतैः ।
आहनद्भरतश्रेष्ठ भीमं वैकर्तनः शरैः ॥१८॥
18. mahāvegaiḥ prasannāgraiḥ śātakumbhapariṣkṛtaiḥ ,
āhanadbharataśreṣṭha bhīmaṁ vaikartanaḥ śaraiḥ.
18. mahāvegaiḥ prasannāgraiḥ śātakumbhapariṣkṛtaiḥ
āhanat bharataśreṣṭha bhīmam vaikartanaḥ śaraiḥ
18. bharataśreṣṭha vaikartanaḥ mahāvegaiḥ prasannāgraiḥ
śātakumbhapariṣkṛtaiḥ śaraiḥ bhīmam āhanat
18. O best among the Bhāratas, Karṇa struck Bhīma with arrows that were extremely swift, had sharp tips, and were adorned with pure gold.
तस्यास्यतो धनुर्भीमश्चकर्त निशितैस्त्रिभिः ।
रथनीडाच्च यन्तारं भल्लेनापातयत्क्षितौ ॥१९॥
19. tasyāsyato dhanurbhīmaścakarta niśitaistribhiḥ ,
rathanīḍācca yantāraṁ bhallenāpātayatkṣitau.
19. tasya āsyataḥ dhanuḥ bhīmaḥ cakarta niśitaiḥ tribhiḥ
rathanīḍāt ca yantāram bhallena apātayat kṣitau
19. bhīmaḥ tasya āsyataḥ dhanuḥ niśitaiḥ tribhiḥ (śaraiḥ)
cakarta ca bhallena rathanīḍāt yantāram kṣitau apātayat
19. As Karṇa was drawing his bow, Bhīma cut it with three sharp arrows, and with a broad-headed arrow, he struck down the charioteer from the chariot's seat onto the ground.
स काङ्क्षन्भीमसेनस्य वधं वैकर्तनो वृषः ।
शक्तिं कनकवैडूर्यचित्रदण्डां परामृशत् ॥२०॥
20. sa kāṅkṣanbhīmasenasya vadhaṁ vaikartano vṛṣaḥ ,
śaktiṁ kanakavaiḍūryacitradaṇḍāṁ parāmṛśat.
20. saḥ kāṅkṣan bhīmasenasya vadham vaikartanaḥ
vṛṣaḥ śaktim kanakavaiḍūryacitradaṇḍām parāmṛśat
20. saḥ vṛṣaḥ vaikartanaḥ bhīmasenasya vadham kāṅkṣan
kanakavaiḍūryacitradaṇḍām śaktim parāmṛśat
20. That mighty Karṇa, desiring the death of Bhīmasena, grasped his spear (śakti), which had a shaft adorned with gold and cat's eye gems.
प्रगृह्य च महाशक्तिं कालशक्तिमिवापराम् ।
समुत्क्षिप्य च राधेयः संधाय च महाबलः ।
चिक्षेप भीमसेनाय जीवितान्तकरीमिव ॥२१॥
21. pragṛhya ca mahāśaktiṁ kālaśaktimivāparām ,
samutkṣipya ca rādheyaḥ saṁdhāya ca mahābalaḥ ,
cikṣepa bhīmasenāya jīvitāntakarīmiva.
21. pragṛhya ca mahāśaktim kālaśaktim
iva aparām samutkṣipya ca rādheyaḥ
saṃdhāya ca mahābalaḥ cikṣepa
bhīmasenāya jīvitāntakarīm iva
21. mahābalaḥ rādheyaḥ ca mahāśaktim
aparām kālaśaktim iva pragṛhya ca
samutkṣipya ca saṃdhāya ca
jīvitāntakarīm iva bhīmasenāya cikṣepa
21. The greatly powerful Karna, having grasped a formidable spear (śakti) as if it were another power of death (kālaśakti), and having lifted and aimed it, hurled it at Bhimasena as if it were a life-ending weapon.
शक्तिं विसृज्य राधेयः पुरंदर इवाशनिम् ।
ननाद सुमहानादं बलवान्सूतनन्दनः ।
तं च नादं ततः श्रुत्वा पुत्रास्ते हृषिताभवन् ॥२२॥
22. śaktiṁ visṛjya rādheyaḥ puraṁdara ivāśanim ,
nanāda sumahānādaṁ balavānsūtanandanaḥ ,
taṁ ca nādaṁ tataḥ śrutvā putrāste hṛṣitābhavan.
22. śaktim visṛjya rādheyaḥ purandaraḥ
iva aśanim nanāda sumahānādam
balavān sūtanandanaḥ tam ca nādam tataḥ
śrutvā putrāḥ te hṛṣitāḥ abhavan
22. rādheyaḥ balavān sūtanandanaḥ śaktim visṛjya purandaraḥ aśanim iva sumahānādam nanāda.
tataḥ te putrāḥ tam nādam ca śrutvā hṛṣitāḥ abhavan.
22. Having discharged the spear (śakti), the powerful Karna, son of the charioteer, let out a tremendous roar, like Indra releasing his thunderbolt. Hearing that roar, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons then became greatly delighted.
तां कर्णभुजनिर्मुक्तामर्कवैश्वानरप्रभाम् ।
शक्तिं वियति चिच्छेद भीमः सप्तभिराशुगैः ॥२३॥
23. tāṁ karṇabhujanirmuktāmarkavaiśvānaraprabhām ,
śaktiṁ viyati ciccheda bhīmaḥ saptabhirāśugaiḥ.
23. tām karṇabhujanirmuktām arkavaiśvānaraprabhām
śaktim viyati ciccheda bhīmaḥ saptabhiḥ āśugaiḥ
23. bhīmaḥ karṇabhujanirmuktām arkavaiśvānaraprabhām tām śaktim saptabhiḥ āśugaiḥ viyati ciccheda.
23. Bhima, using seven swift arrows, intercepted that spear (śakti) in the sky, the one released from Karna's arm and shining with the brilliance of the sun and fire.
छित्त्वा शक्तिं ततो भीमो निर्मुक्तोरगसंनिभाम् ।
मार्गमाण इव प्राणान्सूतपुत्रस्य मारिष ॥२४॥
24. chittvā śaktiṁ tato bhīmo nirmuktoragasaṁnibhām ,
mārgamāṇa iva prāṇānsūtaputrasya māriṣa.
24. chittvā śaktim tataḥ bhīmaḥ nirmuktoragasaṃnibhām
mārgamāṇaḥ iva prāṇān sūtaputrasya māriṣa
24. māriṣa,
tataḥ bhīmaḥ निर्मुक्तोरगसंनिभाम् शक्तिम् छित्त्वा सूतपुत्रस्य प्राणान् मार्गमाणः इव [आसीत्] ।
24. O venerable one (māriṣa), then Bhima, having cut the spear (śakti) that resembled a cast-off snake-skin, appeared as if he were seeking the very life of Karna, the son of the charioteer.
प्राहिणोन्नव संरब्धः शरान्बर्हिणवाससः ।
स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्शिलाधौतान्यमदण्डोपमान्मृधे ॥२५॥
25. prāhiṇonnava saṁrabdhaḥ śarānbarhiṇavāsasaḥ ,
svarṇapuṅkhāñśilādhautānyamadaṇḍopamānmṛdhe.
25. prāhiṇot nava saṃrabdhaḥ śarān barhiṇavāsasaḥ
svarṇapuṅkhān śilādhautān yamadaṇḍopamān mṛdhe
25. saṃrabdhaḥ prāhiṇot nava śarān barhiṇavāsasaḥ
svarṇapuṅkhān śilādhautān yamadaṇṇḍopamān mṛdhe
25. Greatly enraged, he dispatched nine arrows in battle. These arrows had peacock feather fletching, golden shafts, were sharpened on stone, and resembled the rod of Yama.
कर्णोऽप्यन्यद्धनुर्गृह्य हेमपृष्ठं दुरासदम् ।
विकृष्य च महातेजा व्यसृजत्सायकान्नव ॥२६॥
26. karṇo'pyanyaddhanurgṛhya hemapṛṣṭhaṁ durāsadam ,
vikṛṣya ca mahātejā vyasṛjatsāyakānnava.
26. karṇaḥ api anyat dhanuḥ gṛhya hemapṛṣṭham durāsadam
vikṛṣya ca mahātejāḥ vyasṛjat sāyakān nava
26. mahātejāḥ karṇaḥ api anyat hemapṛṣṭham durāsadam
dhanuḥ gṛhya ca vikṛṣya nava sāyakān vyasṛjat
26. Karna, the greatly powerful one, also took another formidable, golden-backed bow, and drawing it, released nine arrows.
तान्पाण्डुपुत्रश्चिच्छेद नवभिर्नतपर्वभिः ।
वसुषेणेन निर्मुक्तान्नव राजन्महाशरान् ।
छित्त्वा भीमो महाराज नादं सिंह इवानदत् ॥२७॥
27. tānpāṇḍuputraściccheda navabhirnataparvabhiḥ ,
vasuṣeṇena nirmuktānnava rājanmahāśarān ,
chittvā bhīmo mahārāja nādaṁ siṁha ivānadat.
27. tān pāṇḍuputraḥ ciccheda navabhiḥ
nataparvabhiḥ vasuṣeṇena nirmuktān
nava rājan mahāśarān chittvā bhīmaḥ
mahārāja nādam siṃha iva ānadat
27. rājan mahārāja,
pāṇḍuputraḥ navabhiḥ nataparvabhiḥ vasuṣeṇena nirmuktān tān nava mahāśarān ciccheda.
chittvā bhīmaḥ siṃha iva nādam ānadat
27. O King, the son of Pandu cut those nine great arrows released by Vasushena (Karna) using nine arrows with bent fletching joints. Having cut them, Bhima, O great king, roared like a lion.
तौ वृषाविव नर्दन्तौ बलिनौ वाशितान्तरे ।
शार्दूलाविव चान्योन्यमत्यर्थं च ह्यगर्जताम् ॥२८॥

28. Those two powerful warriors, roaring like two bulls amidst the commotion of battle, and indeed, like two tigers, they greatly roared at each other.
अन्योन्यं प्रजिहीर्षन्तावन्योन्यस्यान्तरैषिणौ ।
अन्योन्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ गोष्ठेष्विव महर्षभौ ॥२९॥

29. Desiring to overcome each other, seeking out each other's vulnerabilities, and intently observing one another, they were like two great bulls in their cattle pens.
महागजाविवासाद्य विषाणाग्रैः परस्परम् ।
शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैरन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ॥३०॥
30. mahāgajāvivāsādya viṣāṇāgraiḥ parasparam ,
śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairanyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ.

30. Like two great elephants, having approached each other, they clashed mutually with their tusks. In the same way, they struck each other with arrows released from fully drawn bows.
निर्दहन्तौ महाराज शरवृष्ट्या परस्परम् ।
अन्योन्यमभिवीक्षन्तौ कोपाद्विवृतलोचनौ ॥३१॥

31. O great king, they mutually scorched each other with a rain of arrows. With eyes widened by rage, they kept observing one another.
प्रहसन्तौ तथान्योन्यं भर्त्सयन्तौ मुहुर्मुहुः ।
शङ्खशब्दं च कुर्वाणौ युयुधाते परस्परम् ॥३२॥

32. Laughing at each other and repeatedly rebuking one another, they also sounded their conches. Thus, they engaged in mutual combat.
तस्य भीमः पुनश्चापं मुष्टौ चिच्छेद मारिष ।
शङ्खवर्णांश्च तानश्वान्बाणैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥३३॥
33. tasya bhīmaḥ punaścāpaṁ muṣṭau ciccheda māriṣa ,
śaṅkhavarṇāṁśca tānaśvānbāṇairninye yamakṣayam.

33. O respected one, Bhima again cut his (Karna's) bow at the grip. With arrows, he also sent those conch-colored horses to the abode of Yama (yamakṣaya).
तथा कृच्छ्रगतं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं दुर्योधनो नृपः ।
वेपमान इव क्रोधाद्व्यादिदेशाथ दुर्जयम् ॥३४॥
34. tathā kṛcchragataṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ duryodhano nṛpaḥ ,
vepamāna iva krodhādvyādideśātha durjayam.

34. Having thus seen Karna fallen into such distress, King Duryodhana, as if trembling with anger, then commanded Durjaya.
गच्छ दुर्जय राधेयं पुरा ग्रसति पाण्डवः ।
जहि तूबरकं क्षिप्रं कर्णस्य बलमादधत् ॥३५॥
35. gaccha durjaya rādheyaṁ purā grasati pāṇḍavaḥ ,

35. Go, O Durjaya! Before the Pandava (Bhima) devours Radheya (Karna)! Quickly destroy the impediment, thereby providing strength to Karna.
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा तव पुत्रस्तवात्मजम् ।
अभ्यद्रवद्भीमसेनं व्यासक्तं विकिरञ्शरान् ॥३६॥

36. Thus addressed, your grandson (Durjaya), saying 'So be it,' rushed towards your kinsman Bhimasena, himself scattering arrows, while Bhimasena was engrossed (in battle).
स भीमं नवभिर्बाणैरश्वानष्टभिरर्दयत् ।
षड्भिः सूतं त्रिभिः केतुं पुनस्तं चापि सप्तभिः ॥३७॥
37. sa bhīmaṁ navabhirbāṇairaśvānaṣṭabhirardayat ,
ṣaḍbhiḥ sūtaṁ tribhiḥ ketuṁ punastaṁ cāpi saptabhiḥ.

37. He struck Bhīma with nine arrows, his horses with eight, his charioteer with six, and his banner with three. Then, he struck Bhīma again with seven (arrows).
भीमसेनोऽपि संक्रुद्धः साश्वयन्तारमाशुगैः ।
दुर्जयं भिन्नमर्माणमनयद्यमसादनम् ॥३८॥
38. bhīmaseno'pi saṁkruddhaḥ sāśvayantāramāśugaiḥ ,
durjayaṁ bhinnamarmāṇamanayadyamasādanam.

38. Greatly enraged, Bhīmasena also, with swift-flying arrows, led Durjaya, whose vital parts were pierced, along with his horses and charioteer, to the abode of Yama (the god of death).
स्वलंकृतं क्षितौ क्षुण्णं चेष्टमानं यथोरगम् ।
रुदन्नार्तस्तव सुतं कर्णश्चक्रे प्रदक्षिणम् ॥३९॥
39. svalaṁkṛtaṁ kṣitau kṣuṇṇaṁ ceṣṭamānaṁ yathoragam ,
rudannārtastava sutaṁ karṇaścakre pradakṣiṇam.

39. Upon seeing your son (Durjaya), well-adorned, crushed on the ground, and writhing like a snake, Karṇa, weeping and distressed, circumambulated him (your son).
स तु तं विरथं कृत्वा स्मयन्नत्यन्तवैरिणम् ।
समाचिनोद्बाणगणैः शतघ्नीमिव शङ्कुभिः ॥४०॥
40. sa tu taṁ virathaṁ kṛtvā smayannatyantavairiṇam ,
samācinodbāṇagaṇaiḥ śataghnīmiva śaṅkubhiḥ.

40. But he (Bhīma), having rendered his arch-enemy (Durjaya) chariotless, smiling, covered him with hosts of arrows, just as a śataghnī (spiked weapon or fortification) is covered with spikes.
तथाप्यतिरथः कर्णो भिद्यमानः स्म सायकैः ।
न जहौ समरे भीमं क्रुद्धरूपं परंतपः ॥४१॥
41. tathāpyatirathaḥ karṇo bhidyamānaḥ sma sāyakaiḥ ,
na jahau samare bhīmaṁ kruddharūpaṁ paraṁtapaḥ.
41. tathā api atirathaḥ karṇaḥ bhidyamānaḥ sma sāyakaiḥ
na jahau samare bhīmam kruddharūpam paraṃtapaḥ

41. Nevertheless, Karna, the great warrior and tormentor of enemies, though being pierced by arrows, did not abandon the furious-looking Bhima in battle.
