1.
Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed, those Pārthas and the two Yamas, foremost among men, together with Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), bowed to Janārdana.

2.
And he (Janārdana), that tiger among men, consoled them - who were worthy of honor - with exceedingly gentle words, treating them with due respect.

3.
But Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, again asked Mārkaṇḍeya, the great sage, about the future state of the world regarding sovereignty.

4.
O best of speakers, O sage, descendant of Bhṛgu, we have heard from you (your narration of) the marvelous events that occurred at the beginning of the cosmic age (yuga), concerning creation and dissolution.

5.
Even in this Kali Yuga, I still have curiosity. What will remain when the natural laws (dharma) are completely disturbed?

6.
What will be the vitality of humans then? What will be their food and activities? What will be their lifespan and their clothing at the decline of the age?

7.
And reaching what ultimate stage (kāṣṭhā) will the Kṛta Yuga be restored again? O sage, please speak in detail, for you speak of many wonderful things here.

8.
Thus addressed, that eminent sage (the great sage) spoke again, delighting the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis and also the Pāṇḍavas.

9.
Mārkaṇḍeya said: O best among the Bhāratas, listen to me as I narrate this account of the future of all beings, which is revealed as the corrupt age (kālam) approaches.

vṛṣaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ dharmaḥ manuṣyeṣu abhavat purā
vṛṣaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ dharmaḥ manuṣyeṣu abhavat purā
10.
In the Kṛta age, natural law (dharma) was fully established among humans, like a bull with four feet, complete, and free from deceit or artificial conditions. This is how it existed in ancient times.

11.

tretāyām dvāpare ardhena vyāmiśraḥ dharmaḥ ucyate
tretāyām dvāpare ardhena vyāmiśraḥ dharmaḥ ucyate
11.
However, in the Tretā age, natural law (dharma) became established with only three parts, as it was afflicted by one 'foot' of unrighteousness (adharma). In the Dvāpara age, natural law (dharma) is said to be mixed by half (with unrighteousness).
12. tribhiraṁśairadharmastu lokānākramya tiṣṭhati ,
caturthāṁśena dharmastu manuṣyānupatiṣṭhati.
caturthāṁśena dharmastu manuṣyānupatiṣṭhati.
12.
tribhiḥ aṃśaiḥ adharmaḥ tu lokān ākramya tiṣṭhati
caturthāṃśena dharmaḥ tu manuṣyān upatiṣṭhati
caturthāṃśena dharmaḥ tu manuṣyān upatiṣṭhati
12.
But unrighteousness (adharma) prevails by three parts, having seized control of the worlds. Natural law (dharma), on the other hand, stands by humanity with only a fourth part.

13.
O Pāṇḍava, understand from me that the life span, vitality, intelligence, strength, and brilliance of humans diminish with each succeeding age.

14.
O Yudhiṣṭhira, kings, Brahmins, Vaiśyas, and even Śūdras - people who are false to the natural law (dharma) - will observe natural law (dharma) merely by pretexts.

15.
In the world, truth will be curtailed by men who consider themselves learned. Due to this loss of truth, their lifespan will then be short.

16.
Due to the decline of their lifespan, they will not be able to properly learn knowledge. Moreover, greed will overpower those who are devoid of knowledge because of their lack of discrimination.

17.
Deluded humans, engrossed in greed, anger, and desire, will become hostile and eager to kill one another.

18.
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas will mix with each other and become like Shudras, devoid of austerity (tapas) and truth.

19.
The lowest will become the middle class, and the middle class will become the lowest of the low. Such will be the world when the end of the age (yuga) has arrived.

20.
Among garments, hempen cloth will be considered the best, and among grains, the inferior "koradūṣaka" will be preferred. And men (puruṣa) will have only their wives as friends at the destruction of the age (yuga).

24.
Even those people who are always devoted to vows in both ancestral rites (śrāddha) and divine ceremonies, will be consumed by greed and will exploit each other in this world.

25.
A father will exploit his son's possessions, and a son will likewise exploit his father's possessions. Foods that are forbidden or past their time will be consumed at the end of the age (yuga).

26.
Brahmins who condemn the Vedas will not observe sacred vows. Deluded by rationalistic arguments (hetuvāda), they will neither perform Vedic rituals (yajña) nor Vedic fire rituals (homa).
