Vaiśampāyana said, "Then, after roaming in different directions, the Pārthas - the best archers on earth - having killed deer, boars, and buffaloes, reunited, though they had been wandering separately."

Then Yudhiṣṭhira, having heard the words spoken by the animals, addressed those brothers of his regarding that great forest, which was filled with herds of deer and wild beasts and resounded with the cries of birds.

Approaching the sun-drenched direction, these deer and birds speak cruelly, announcing a terrible strain and a great battle instigated by enemies.

4.
Quickly, turn back! Enough of these deer for us! Indeed, my mind (manas) is pained and burns. And my life-lord (prāṇapati), full of anger (manyu), is agitated within my body, covering my intellect.

5.
The Kāmyaka forest appears to me in such a state, like a lake from which the serpents have been snatched by Suparṇa (Garuḍa), or like a kingdom without a king whose prosperity has been seized, or like a pitcher whose essence has been drunk by drunkards.

Then, those heroic men, carried by large, beautiful chariots yoked with Sindhu horses whose immense speed surpassed a strong gust of wind, became directed towards the hermitage (āśrama).

But among them, a jackal with a loud cry approached their left side and cried out, "Let them turn back!" The king, having carefully considered that (omen), then spoke to Bhima and Dhananjaya (Arjuna).

8.
As this jackal of lowly origin (yoni), having approached our left side, cries out, it is very clear that the wicked Kurus have forcibly committed an attack against us, having shown us disrespect.

Thus, as they entered that forest, and after having hunted in the great wilderness, they then saw a crying young girl, who was the foster-sister and maidservant of their beloved (priyā).

10.
Indrasena, more distressed at that moment, quickly approached her, jumped down from the chariot, then ran towards her, and spoke these words to her, his foster-sister (dhātreyikā), O King.

11.
"Why do you weep, fallen upon the ground? Why is your face withered and pale? Surely, the princess Draupadi, whose form is flawless, whose eyes are very large, and who is like the very body of the foremost among the Kurus, has not been tormented by wicked, extremely cruel people?"

12.
If, indeed, the goddess (Draupadi) has entered the earth, or even if she has gone to heaven or the ocean, the Pārthas will surely follow her path. For indeed, the king of righteousness (dharma) grieves deeply in this way.

13.
Who indeed, among such vanquishers of foes, those capable of enduring hardship, the unconquered ones (the Pāṇḍavas), would, like an utterly foolish person, wish to seize one as dear as life itself, their most beloved, an incomparable gem? He (the abductor) does not understand that she, who has protectors, is today the Pāṇḍavas' very heart that moves outside their bodies.

Whose body will fierce, sharp, excellent arrows pierce today and enter the earth? O timid one, do not grieve for her, know that today Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) will return. For the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas), having completely slain all enemies, will reunite with Yājñasenī (Draupadī).

Then, having wiped her beautiful face, the nursemaid (dhātreyikā) spoke to the charioteer, Indrasena: "Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) has been forcibly abducted by Jayadratha, after he overpowered the Pāṇḍavas, who are like the five (Indra)s."

Indeed, in the past, a woman, bewildered by threats and punishment, with a deeply deluded mind and a withered face, gives her body to someone undeserving, just as a ladle full of excellent ghee is offered into ashes.

Indeed, in the past, an offering (havis) was poured as if into a fire of husks; a garland was discarded as if in a cremation ground; and Soma (Soma), intended for sacrifice, was licked up by a dog, just as when the priestly community is bewildered. Similarly, in the past, a jackal would plunge into a lotus pond after hunting in a great forest.

May no wicked wrongdoer touch the beautiful-nosed, beautiful-eyed, moon-like radiant, serene face of your beloved; for that would be an inauspicious act, like a dog indeed partaking of a sacrificial cake. Therefore, quickly follow these paths! May your time not swiftly pass away here.

Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'O gentle lady, remain silent and control your speech. Do not utter harsh words in our presence. For kings, or even princes, who are arrogant due to their power, eventually experience delusion and disappointment.'

Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, they quickly departed, following those very same paths. They were breathing heavily like snakes again and again, and twanging the bowstrings from their great bows.

Then they saw the dust of that army, which was raised and indeed propelled by the hooves of horses. They also saw Dhaumya, caught amidst the foot-soldiers, shouting, 'Bhīma, come quickly!'

Those princes, whose spirits were greatly distressed, consoled Dhaumya, saying, 'May you go comfortably.' Then, just as hawks are impelled by a piece of meat, they swiftly rushed towards that army.

Their anger blazed up, those whose valor was like that of the great Indra and who were enraged by the outrage committed against Yājñasenī (Draupadī). They saw Jayadratha and their beloved Draupadī seated in his chariot.

Then, Bhīma (vṛkodara), Arjuna (dhanaṃjaya), the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and King Yudhiṣṭhira, all great archers, cried out loudly to the King of Sindhu. Consequently, the enemies became utterly bewildered and lost their sense of direction.
