गिरेर्हिमवतः पृष्ठे मुञ्जवान्नाम पर्वतः ।
तप्यते यत्र भगवांस्तपो नित्यमुमापतिः ॥१॥
1. saṁvarta uvāca ,
girerhimavataḥ pṛṣṭhe muñjavānnāma parvataḥ ,
tapyate yatra bhagavāṁstapo nityamumāpatiḥ.

1. Saṃvarta said: On the ridge of the Himālayan mountain (Himavat) there is a mountain named Muñjavān, where the glorious Lord Shiva (Umāpati) constantly performs austerity (tapas).
वनस्पतीनां मूलेषु टङ्केषु शिखरेषु च ।
गुहासु शैलराजस्य यथाकामं यथासुखम् ॥२॥
2. vanaspatīnāṁ mūleṣu ṭaṅkeṣu śikhareṣu ca ,
guhāsu śailarājasya yathākāmaṁ yathāsukham.

2. Among the roots of trees, on their crags and peaks, and in the caves of the king of mountains, one may live according to one's desire and comfort.
उमासहायो भगवान्यत्र नित्यं महेश्वरः ।
आस्ते शूली महातेजा नानाभूतगणावृतः ॥३॥
3. umāsahāyo bhagavānyatra nityaṁ maheśvaraḥ ,
āste śūlī mahātejā nānābhūtagaṇāvṛtaḥ.

3. Where the divine (Bhagavān) Maheśvara, accompanied by Umā, always resides, bearing a trident, of immense splendor, surrounded by hosts of various spirits (bhūtas).
तत्र रुद्राश्च साध्याश्च विश्वेऽथ वसवस्तथा ।
यमश्च वरुणश्चैव कुबेरश्च सहानुगः ॥४॥
4. tatra rudrāśca sādhyāśca viśve'tha vasavastathā ,
yamaśca varuṇaścaiva kuberaśca sahānugaḥ.

4. There reside the Rudras and the Sādhyas, and also the Viśvedevas and the Vasus; similarly, Yama and Varuṇa, and Kubera with his retinue.
भूतानि च पिशाचाश्च नासत्यावश्विनावपि ।
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव यक्षा देवर्षयस्तथा ॥५॥
5. bhūtāni ca piśācāśca nāsatyāvaśvināvapi ,
gandharvāpsarasaścaiva yakṣā devarṣayastathā.

gandharvāpsarasaḥ ca eva yakṣāḥ devarṣayaḥ tathā

5. And the spirits (bhūtas) and ghastly beings (piśācas), and the two Nāsatyas (Aśvins) as well; similarly, the Gandharvas and Apsarases, and the Yakṣas, and the divine sages (devarṣis).
आदित्या मरुतश्चैव यातुधानाश्च सर्वशः ।
उपासन्ते महात्मानं बहुरूपमुमापतिम् ॥६॥
6. ādityā marutaścaiva yātudhānāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
upāsante mahātmānaṁ bahurūpamumāpatim.

upāsante mahātmānam bahurūpam umāpatim

6. The Adityas, the Maruts, and indeed all the demons, worship the great-souled, multi-formed lord of Umā (Śiva).
रमते भगवांस्तत्र कुबेरानुचरैः सह ।
विकृतैर्विकृताकारैः क्रीडद्भिः पृथिवीपते ।
श्रिया ज्वलन्दृश्यते वै बालादित्यसमद्युतिः ॥७॥
7. ramate bhagavāṁstatra kuberānucaraiḥ saha ,
vikṛtairvikṛtākāraiḥ krīḍadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate ,
śriyā jvalandṛśyate vai bālādityasamadyutiḥ.

vai śriyā jvalan bālādityasamadyutiḥ dṛśyate
7. O lord of the earth, the glorious one (bhagavān) delights there with Kubera's disfigured and monstrous-looking attendants, who are all playing. Indeed, he is seen blazing with splendor, possessing the brilliance of the rising sun.
न रूपं दृश्यते तस्य संस्थानं वा कथंचन ।
निर्देष्टुं प्राणिभिः कैश्चित्प्राकृतैर्मांसलोचनैः ॥८॥
8. na rūpaṁ dṛśyate tasya saṁsthānaṁ vā kathaṁcana ,
nirdeṣṭuṁ prāṇibhiḥ kaiścitprākṛtairmāṁsalocanaiḥ.
8. na rūpam dṛśyate tasya saṃsthānam vā kathaṃcana
nirdeṣṭum prāṇibhiḥ kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ
8. tasya rūpam vā saṃsthānam kathaṃcana na dṛśyate,
kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ prāṇibhiḥ nirdeṣṭum na (śakyam)
8. His form or structure is not seen by any means, nor can he be described by any ordinary beings (prāṇin) with fleshly eyes.
नोष्णं न शिशिरं तत्र न वायुर्न च भास्करः ।
न जरा क्षुत्पिपासे वा न मृत्युर्न भयं नृप ॥९॥
9. noṣṇaṁ na śiśiraṁ tatra na vāyurna ca bhāskaraḥ ,
na jarā kṣutpipāse vā na mṛtyurna bhayaṁ nṛpa.
9. na uṣṇam na śiśiram tatra na vāyuḥ na ca bhāskaraḥ
na jarā kṣutpipāse vā na mṛtyuḥ na bhayam nṛpa
9. nṛpa,
tatra na uṣṇam,
na śiśiram,
na vāyuḥ ca na bhāskaraḥ.
na jarā,
kṣutpipāse vā na,
na mṛtyuḥ,
na bhayam (asti)
9. O King, there is no heat nor cold, no wind nor sun (bhāskara) there. Neither old age, hunger and thirst, nor death or fear exist.
तस्य शैलस्य पार्श्वेषु सर्वेषु जयतां वर ।
धातवो जातरूपस्य रश्मयः सवितुर्यथा ॥१०॥
10. tasya śailasya pārśveṣu sarveṣu jayatāṁ vara ,
dhātavo jātarūpasya raśmayaḥ savituryathā.

dhātavaḥ jātarūpasya raśmayaḥ savituḥ yathā
10. vara jayatām tasya śailasya sarveṣu pārśveṣu

10. O best among the victorious, on all sides of that mountain, there are veins of gold, shining like the rays of the sun.
रक्ष्यन्ते ते कुबेरस्य सहायैरुद्यतायुधैः ।
चिकीर्षद्भिः प्रियं राजन्कुबेरस्य महात्मनः ॥११॥
11. rakṣyante te kuberasya sahāyairudyatāyudhaiḥ ,
cikīrṣadbhiḥ priyaṁ rājankuberasya mahātmanaḥ.
11. rakṣyante te kuberasya sahāyaiḥ udyatāyudhaiḥ
cikīrṣadbhiḥ priyam rājan kuberasya mahātmanaḥ
11. rājan te kuberasya sahāyaiḥ udyatāyudhaiḥ
cikīrṣadbhiḥ priyam mahātmanaḥ kuberasya rakṣyante
11. O King, those [gold veins] are guarded by the assistants of Kubera, who bear uplifted weapons and desire to do what is pleasing to the great-souled Kubera.
तस्मै भगवते कृत्वा नमः शर्वाय वेधसे ।
रुद्राय शितिकण्ठाय सुरूपाय सुवर्चसे ॥१२॥
12. tasmai bhagavate kṛtvā namaḥ śarvāya vedhase ,
rudrāya śitikaṇṭhāya surūpāya suvarcase.

12. Having offered obeisance to that venerable Lord [Śiva], to Śarva, the ordainer (Vedhas), to Rudra, the blue-necked (śitikaṇṭha) one, the beautiful-formed, and the radiant one.
कपर्दिने करालाय हर्यक्ष्णे वरदाय च ।
त्र्यक्ष्णे पूष्णो दन्तभिदे वामनाय शिवाय च ॥१३॥
13. kapardine karālāya haryakṣṇe varadāya ca ,
tryakṣṇe pūṣṇo dantabhide vāmanāya śivāya ca.

tryakṣṇe pūṣṇaḥ dantabhide vāmanāya śivāya ca

13. And to Kapardin (the one with matted hair), to the formidable, to the lion-eyed, and to the bestower of boons; to the three-eyed, to the one who broke Pūṣan's teeth, to the dwarf (Vāmana), and to the auspicious (śiva) one.
याम्यायाव्यक्तकेशाय सद्वृत्ते शंकराय च ।
क्षेम्याय हरिनेत्राय स्थाणवे पुरुषाय च ॥१४॥
14. yāmyāyāvyaktakeśāya sadvṛtte śaṁkarāya ca ,
kṣemyāya harinetrāya sthāṇave puruṣāya ca.

kṣemyāya harinetrāya sthāṇave puruṣāya ca

14. Salutations to the controller, to the one with unmanifested hair, to the one of good conduct, and to Śaṃkara. To the one who brings well-being, to the one whose eye is Hari (Viṣṇu), to the immovable one (sthāṇu), and to the cosmic person (puruṣa).
हरिकेशाय मुण्डाय कृशायोत्तारणाय च ।
भास्कराय सुतीर्थाय देवदेवाय रंहसे ॥१५॥
15. harikeśāya muṇḍāya kṛśāyottāraṇāya ca ,
bhāskarāya sutīrthāya devadevāya raṁhase.

15. Salutations to the one with tawny hair, to the ascetic, to the emaciated one, and to the deliverer. To the radiant one, to the one with sacred fords, to the God of gods, and to the powerful one.
उष्णीषिणे सुवक्त्राय सहस्राक्षाय मीढुषे ।
गिरिशाय प्रशान्ताय यतये चीरवाससे ॥१६॥
16. uṣṇīṣiṇe suvaktrāya sahasrākṣāya mīḍhuṣe ,
giriśāya praśāntāya yataye cīravāsase.

16. Salutations to the one wearing a turban, to the one with a beautiful face, to the thousand-eyed one, and to the bountiful one. To the lord of mountains, to the utterly peaceful one, to the ascetic (yati), and to the one wearing bark garments.
बिल्वदण्डाय सिद्धाय सर्वदण्डधराय च ।
मृगव्याधाय महते धन्विनेऽथ भवाय च ॥१७॥
17. bilvadaṇḍāya siddhāya sarvadaṇḍadharāya ca ,
mṛgavyādhāya mahate dhanvine'tha bhavāya ca.

17. Salutations to the one holding a Bilva staff, to the perfected one, to the bearer of all authority, and to the hunter of deer. To the great one, to the archer, and to the source of existence (bhava).
वराय सौम्यवक्त्राय पशुहस्ताय वर्षिणे ।
हिरण्यबाहवे राजन्नुग्राय पतये दिशाम् ॥१८॥
18. varāya saumyavaktrāya paśuhastāya varṣiṇe ,
hiraṇyabāhave rājannugrāya pataye diśām.

18. To the excellent one, whose face is gentle, who holds an animal in his hand, who showers blessings, whose arms are golden, O King, to the fierce one, the lord of the directions.
पशूनां पतये चैव भूतानां पतये तथा ।
वृषाय मातृभक्ताय सेनान्ये मध्यमाय च ॥१९॥
19. paśūnāṁ pataye caiva bhūtānāṁ pataye tathā ,
vṛṣāya mātṛbhaktāya senānye madhyamāya ca.
19. paśūnām pataye ca eva bhūtānām pataye tathā
vṛṣāya mātṛbhaktāya senānye madhyamāya ca
19. paśūnām pataye ca eva bhūtānām pataye tathā
vṛṣāya mātṛbhaktāya senānye madhyamāya ca
19. To the lord of animals (paśu), and indeed, to the lord of all beings; also, to the bull-like one, to the one devoted to his mother, to the commander of the army, and to the one who is the middle (or impartial).
स्रुवहस्ताय पतये धन्विने भार्गवाय च ।
अजाय कृष्णनेत्राय विरूपाक्षाय चैव ह ॥२०॥
20. sruvahastāya pataye dhanvine bhārgavāya ca ,
ajāya kṛṣṇanetrāya virūpākṣāya caiva ha.

20. To the one holding a sacrificial ladle (sruva) in his hand, to the lord, to the archer, and to the descendant of Bhṛgu; to the unborn (aja), to the one with dark eyes, and indeed, to the one with distorted or unusual eyes.
तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राय तीक्ष्णाय वैश्वानरमुखाय च ।
महाद्युतयेऽनङ्गाय सर्वाङ्गाय प्रजावते ॥२१॥
21. tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrāya tīkṣṇāya vaiśvānaramukhāya ca ,
mahādyutaye'naṅgāya sarvāṅgāya prajāvate.
21. tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrāya tīkṣṇāya vaiśvanaramukhāya
ca mahādyutaye anaṅgāya sarvāṅgāya prajāvate

21. To the one with sharp fangs, to the fierce one, and to the one whose mouth is the universal fire (Vaiśvānara); to the one of great splendor, to the bodiless one, to the one with a universal body, and to the progenitor of offspring.
तथा शुक्राधिपतये पृथवे कृत्तिवाससे ।
कपालमालिने नित्यं सुवर्णमुकुटाय च ॥२२॥
22. tathā śukrādhipataye pṛthave kṛttivāsase ,
kapālamāline nityaṁ suvarṇamukuṭāya ca.

22. And similarly, to the lord of Śukra, to the expansive one, to him who wears a hide as garment, to him adorned with a garland of skulls, and always to him with a golden crown.
महादेवाय कृष्णाय त्र्यम्बकायानघाय च ।
क्रोधनाय नृशंसाय मृदवे बाहुशालिने ॥२३॥
23. mahādevāya kṛṣṇāya tryambakāyānaghāya ca ,
krodhanāya nṛśaṁsāya mṛdave bāhuśāline.

ca krodhanāya nṛśaṃsāya mṛdave bāhuśāline

23. To the great god (mahādeva), to the dark one, to the three-eyed one, and to the sinless one; to the wrathful, to the cruel, to the gentle, and to the mighty-armed one.
दण्डिने तप्ततपसे तथैव क्रूरकर्मणे ।
सहस्रशिरसे चैव सहस्रचरणाय च ।
नमः स्वधास्वरूपाय बहुरूपाय दंष्ट्रिणे ॥२४॥
24. daṇḍine taptatapase tathaiva krūrakarmaṇe ,
sahasraśirase caiva sahasracaraṇāya ca ,
namaḥ svadhāsvarūpāya bahurūpāya daṁṣṭriṇe.

24. To the wielder of the staff, to him of intense asceticism (tapas), and similarly to him of fierce deeds; and also to the thousand-headed one and the thousand-footed one. Salutations to him whose essential nature (svarūpa) is svadhā, to the multi-formed one, and to the tusked one.
पिनाकिनं महादेवं महायोगिनमव्ययम् ।
त्रिशूलपाणिं वरदं त्र्यम्बकं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥२५॥
25. pinākinaṁ mahādevaṁ mahāyoginamavyayam ,
triśūlapāṇiṁ varadaṁ tryambakaṁ bhuvaneśvaram.

25. The wielder of the Pināka bow, the great god (mahādeva), the great practitioner of (yoga), the immutable one, the one with a trident in hand, the bestower of boons, the three-eyed one, and the lord of the world.
त्रिपुरघ्नं त्रिनयनं त्रिलोकेशं महौजसम् ।
प्रभवं सर्वभूतानां धारणं धरणीधरम् ॥२६॥
26. tripuraghnaṁ trinayanaṁ trilokeśaṁ mahaujasam ,
prabhavaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ dhāraṇaṁ dharaṇīdharam.

prabhavam sarvabhūtānām dhāraṇam dharaṇīdharam

26. The destroyer of the three cities, the three-eyed one, the lord of the three worlds, the immensely powerful one, the source of all beings, the sustainer, and the upholder of the earth.
ईशानं शंकरं सर्वं शिवं विश्वेश्वरं भवम् ।
उमापतिं पशुपतिं विश्वरूपं महेश्वरम् ॥२७॥
27. īśānaṁ śaṁkaraṁ sarvaṁ śivaṁ viśveśvaraṁ bhavam ,
umāpatiṁ paśupatiṁ viśvarūpaṁ maheśvaram.
27. īśānam śaṃkaram sarvam śivam viśveśvaram bhavam
umāpatim paśupatim viśvarūpam maheśvaram

27. The ruler, the benevolent one, the all-pervading, the auspicious (śivam), the lord of the universe, the existent one (bhavam), the husband of Umā, the lord of creatures (paśupati), the one with a universal form, and the great lord.
विरूपाक्षं दशभुजं तिष्यगोवृषभध्वजम् ।
उग्रं स्थाणुं शिवं घोरं शर्वं गौरीशमीश्वरम् ॥२८॥
28. virūpākṣaṁ daśabhujaṁ tiṣyagovṛṣabhadhvajam ,
ugraṁ sthāṇuṁ śivaṁ ghoraṁ śarvaṁ gaurīśamīśvaram.
28. virūpākṣam daśabhujam tiṣyagovṛṣabhadhvajam ugram
sthāṇum śivam ghoram śarvam gaurīśam īśvaram
28. virūpākṣam daśabhujam tiṣyagovṛṣabhadhvajam ugram

28. The odd-eyed (virūpākṣam), the ten-armed, the one whose banner is the bull, the fierce, the immobile (sthāṇu), the auspicious one, the dreadful, the destroyer (śarva), and the lord of Gaurī, the supreme ruler.
शितिकण्ठमजं शुक्रं पृथुं पृथुहरं हरम् ।
विश्वरूपं विरूपाक्षं बहुरूपमुमापतिम् ॥२९॥
29. śitikaṇṭhamajaṁ śukraṁ pṛthuṁ pṛthuharaṁ haram ,
viśvarūpaṁ virūpākṣaṁ bahurūpamumāpatim.

haram viśvarūpam virūpākṣam bahurūpam umāpatim

29. The blue-necked (śitikaṇṭha), the unborn, the radiant, the expansive, the great destroyer, the remover, the universal-formed, the odd-eyed (virūpākṣam), the multiformed, and the husband of Umā (umāpati).
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवमनङ्गाङ्गहरं हरम् ।
शरण्यं शरणं याहि महादेवं चतुर्मुखम् ॥३०॥
30. praṇamya śirasā devamanaṅgāṅgaharaṁ haram ,
śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaṁ yāhi mahādevaṁ caturmukham.

śaraṇyam śaraṇam yāhi mahādevam caturmukham
30. śirasā praṇamya devam haram anaṅgāṅgaharam

30. Having bowed your head to the god Hara, who destroyed the body of Anaṅga (Kāma), approach for refuge the great god, the four-faced one, who is worthy of protection.
एवं कृत्वा नमस्तस्मै महादेवाय रंहसे ।
महात्मने क्षितिपते तत्सुवर्णमवाप्स्यसि ।
सुवर्णमाहरिष्यन्तस्तत्र गच्छन्तु ते नराः ॥३१॥
31. evaṁ kṛtvā namastasmai mahādevāya raṁhase ,
mahātmane kṣitipate tatsuvarṇamavāpsyasi ,
suvarṇamāhariṣyantastatra gacchantu te narāḥ.
31. evam kṛtvā namaḥ tasmai mahādevāya
raṃhase mahātmane kṣitipate tat
suvarṇam avāpsyasi suvarṇam
āhariṣyantaḥ tatra gacchantu te narāḥ
31. kṣitipate evam kṛtvā tasmai raṃhase
mahātmane mahādevāya namaḥ tat
suvarṇam avāpsyasi suvarṇam
āhariṣyantaḥ te narāḥ tatra gacchantu
31. Having thus offered obeisance to that Mahādeva, the powerful and great-souled (mahātman) one, O king, you will obtain that gold. Let those men who are to collect the gold go there.
व्यास उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स वचस्तस्य चक्रे कारंधमात्मजः ।
ततोऽतिमानुषं सर्वं चक्रे यज्ञस्य संविधिम् ।
सौवर्णानि च भाण्डानि संचक्रुस्तत्र शिल्पिनः ॥३२॥
32. vyāsa uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa vacastasya cakre kāraṁdhamātmajaḥ ,
tato'timānuṣaṁ sarvaṁ cakre yajñasya saṁvidhim ,
sauvarṇāni ca bhāṇḍāni saṁcakrustatra śilpinaḥ.
32. vyāsaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ vacaḥ tasya
cakre kāraṃdhamātmajaḥ tataḥ atimānuṣam
sarvam cakre yajñasya saṃvidhim sauvarṇāni
ca bhāṇḍāni saṃcakruḥ tatra śilpinaḥ
32. vyāsaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ kāraṃdhamātmajaḥ
tasya vacaḥ cakre tataḥ yajñasya
sarvam atimānuṣam saṃvidhim cakre ca tatra
śilpinaḥ sauvarṇāni bhāṇḍāni saṃcakruḥ
32. Vyāsa said: Thus addressed, the son of Kāraṃdhama acted upon his words. Thereafter, he made all the arrangements for the (yajña) Vedic ritual extraordinary. And there, the artisans made golden vessels.
बृहस्पतिस्तु तां श्रुत्वा मरुत्तस्य महीपतेः ।
समृद्धिमति देवेभ्यः संतापमकरोद्भृशम् ॥३३॥
33. bṛhaspatistu tāṁ śrutvā maruttasya mahīpateḥ ,
samṛddhimati devebhyaḥ saṁtāpamakarodbhṛśam.
33. bṛhaspatiḥ tu tām śrutvā maruttasya mahīpateḥ
samṛddhim ati devebhyaḥ saṃtāpam akarot bhṛśam
33. bṛhaspatiḥ tu maruttasya mahīpateḥ tām ati
samṛddhim śrutvā devebhyaḥ bhṛśam saṃtāpam akarot
33. But Bṛhaspati, having heard of that exceedingly great prosperity of King Marutta, truly felt deep distress for the gods.
स तप्यमानो वैवर्ण्यं कृशत्वं चागमत्परम् ।
भविष्यति हि मे शत्रुः संवर्तो वसुमानिति ॥३४॥
34. sa tapyamāno vaivarṇyaṁ kṛśatvaṁ cāgamatparam ,
bhaviṣyati hi me śatruḥ saṁvarto vasumāniti.
34. sa tapyamānaḥ vaivarṇyam kṛśatvam ca āgamat param
bhaviṣyati hi me śatruḥ saṃvartaḥ vasumān iti
34. sa tapyamānaḥ vaivarṇyam kṛśatvam ca param āgamat
hi saṃvartaḥ vasumān me śatruḥ bhaviṣyati iti
34. As he suffered intensely, he became extremely discolored and emaciated. [He thought/feared], 'Indeed, Samvarta, the wealthy one, will become my enemy.'
तं श्रुत्वा भृशसंतप्तं देवराजो बृहस्पतिम् ।
अभिगम्यामरवृतः प्रोवाचेदं वचस्तदा ॥३५॥
35. taṁ śrutvā bhṛśasaṁtaptaṁ devarājo bṛhaspatim ,
abhigamyāmaravṛtaḥ provācedaṁ vacastadā.
35. tam śrutvā bhṛśasaṃtaptam devarājaḥ bṛhaspatim
abhigamya amaravṛtaḥ provāca idam vacaḥ tadā
35. devarājaḥ amaravṛtaḥ tam bhṛśasaṃtaptam śrutvā
bṛhaspatim abhigamya tadā idam vacaḥ provāca
35. Having heard that he was intensely distressed, the king of gods, surrounded by the immortals, then approached Bṛhaspati and spoke these words.
