1. saṁvarta uvāca ,

Saṃvarta said: On the ridge of the Himālayan mountain (Himavat) there is a mountain named Muñjavān, where the glorious Lord Shiva (Umāpati) constantly performs austerity (tapas).
वनस्पतीनां मूलेषु टङ्केषु शिखरेषु च ।
गुहासु शैलराजस्य यथाकामं यथासुखम् ॥२॥

2. vanaspatīnāṁ mūleṣu ṭaṅkeṣu śikhareṣu ca ,
guhāsu śailarājasya yathākāmaṁ yathāsukham.

Among the roots of trees, on their crags and peaks, and in the caves of the king of mountains, one may live according to one's desire and comfort.
उमासहायो भगवान्यत्र नित्यं महेश्वरः ।
आस्ते शूली महातेजा नानाभूतगणावृतः ॥३॥

3. umāsahāyo bhagavānyatra nityaṁ maheśvaraḥ ,

Where the divine (Bhagavān) Maheśvara, accompanied by Umā, always resides, bearing a trident, of immense splendor, surrounded by hosts of various spirits (bhūtas).
तत्र रुद्राश्च साध्याश्च विश्वेऽथ वसवस्तथा ।
यमश्च वरुणश्चैव कुबेरश्च सहानुगः ॥४॥

4. tatra rudrāśca sādhyāśca viśve'tha vasavastathā ,
yamaśca varuṇaścaiva kuberaśca sahānugaḥ.

There reside the Rudras and the Sādhyas, and also the Viśvedevas and the Vasus; similarly, Yama and Varuṇa, and Kubera with his retinue.
भूतानि च पिशाचाश्च नासत्यावश्विनावपि ।
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव यक्षा देवर्षयस्तथा ॥५॥

5. bhūtāni ca piśācāśca nāsatyāvaśvināvapi ,
gandharvāpsarasaścaiva yakṣā devarṣayastathā.

And the spirits (bhūtas) and ghastly beings (piśācas), and the two Nāsatyas (Aśvins) as well; similarly, the Gandharvas and Apsarases, and the Yakṣas, and the divine sages (devarṣis).
आदित्या मरुतश्चैव यातुधानाश्च सर्वशः ।
उपासन्ते महात्मानं बहुरूपमुमापतिम् ॥६॥

6. ādityā marutaścaiva yātudhānāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
upāsante mahātmānaṁ bahurūpamumāpatim.

The Adityas, the Maruts, and indeed all the demons, worship the great-souled, multi-formed lord of Umā (Śiva).
रमते भगवांस्तत्र कुबेरानुचरैः सह ।
विकृतैर्विकृताकारैः क्रीडद्भिः पृथिवीपते ।
श्रिया ज्वलन्दृश्यते वै बालादित्यसमद्युतिः ॥७॥
विकृतैर्विकृताकारैः क्रीडद्भिः पृथिवीपते ।
श्रिया ज्वलन्दृश्यते वै बालादित्यसमद्युतिः ॥७॥
7. ramate bhagavāṁstatra kuberānucaraiḥ saha ,
vikṛtairvikṛtākāraiḥ krīḍadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate ,
śriyā jvalandṛśyate vai bālādityasamadyutiḥ.
vikṛtairvikṛtākāraiḥ krīḍadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate ,
śriyā jvalandṛśyate vai bālādityasamadyutiḥ.

ramate bhagavān tatra kuberānucaraiḥ
saha vikṛtaiḥ vikṛtākāraiḥ
krīdadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate śriyā jvalan

krīdadbhiḥ pṛthivīpate śriyā jvalan

pṛthivīpate bhagavān tatra vikṛtaiḥ vikṛtākāraiḥ krīdadbhiḥ kuberānucaraiḥ saha ramate.

vai śriyā jvalan bālādityasamadyutiḥ dṛśyate
7.
O lord of the earth, the glorious one (bhagavān) delights there with Kubera's disfigured and monstrous-looking attendants, who are all playing. Indeed, he is seen blazing with splendor, possessing the brilliance of the rising sun.
न रूपं दृश्यते तस्य संस्थानं वा कथंचन ।
निर्देष्टुं प्राणिभिः कैश्चित्प्राकृतैर्मांसलोचनैः ॥८॥
निर्देष्टुं प्राणिभिः कैश्चित्प्राकृतैर्मांसलोचनैः ॥८॥
8. na rūpaṁ dṛśyate tasya saṁsthānaṁ vā kathaṁcana ,
nirdeṣṭuṁ prāṇibhiḥ kaiścitprākṛtairmāṁsalocanaiḥ.
nirdeṣṭuṁ prāṇibhiḥ kaiścitprākṛtairmāṁsalocanaiḥ.

na rūpam dṛśyate tasya saṃsthānam vā kathaṃcana
nirdeṣṭum prāṇibhiḥ kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ
nirdeṣṭum prāṇibhiḥ kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ
8.
tasya rūpam vā saṃsthānam kathaṃcana na dṛśyate,
kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ prāṇibhiḥ nirdeṣṭum na (śakyam)
kaiścit prākṛtaiḥ māṃsalocanaiḥ prāṇibhiḥ nirdeṣṭum na (śakyam)

His form or structure is not seen by any means, nor can he be described by any ordinary beings (prāṇin) with fleshly eyes.
नोष्णं न शिशिरं तत्र न वायुर्न च भास्करः ।
न जरा क्षुत्पिपासे वा न मृत्युर्न भयं नृप ॥९॥
न जरा क्षुत्पिपासे वा न मृत्युर्न भयं नृप ॥९॥
9. noṣṇaṁ na śiśiraṁ tatra na vāyurna ca bhāskaraḥ ,
na jarā kṣutpipāse vā na mṛtyurna bhayaṁ nṛpa.
na jarā kṣutpipāse vā na mṛtyurna bhayaṁ nṛpa.

na uṣṇam na śiśiram tatra na vāyuḥ na ca bhāskaraḥ

9.
O King, there is no heat nor cold, no wind nor sun (bhāskara) there. Neither old age, hunger and thirst, nor death or fear exist.
तस्य शैलस्य पार्श्वेषु सर्वेषु जयतां वर ।
धातवो जातरूपस्य रश्मयः सवितुर्यथा ॥१०॥

10. tasya śailasya pārśveṣu sarveṣu jayatāṁ vara ,
dhātavo jātarūpasya raśmayaḥ savituryathā.

O best among the victorious, on all sides of that mountain, there are veins of gold, shining like the rays of the sun.
रक्ष्यन्ते ते कुबेरस्य सहायैरुद्यतायुधैः ।
चिकीर्षद्भिः प्रियं राजन्कुबेरस्य महात्मनः ॥११॥

11. rakṣyante te kuberasya sahāyairudyatāyudhaiḥ ,
cikīrṣadbhiḥ priyaṁ rājankuberasya mahātmanaḥ.

11.
O King, those [gold veins] are guarded by the assistants of Kubera, who bear uplifted weapons and desire to do what is pleasing to the great-souled Kubera.
तस्मै भगवते कृत्वा नमः शर्वाय वेधसे ।
रुद्राय शितिकण्ठाय सुरूपाय सुवर्चसे ॥१२॥

12. tasmai bhagavate kṛtvā namaḥ śarvāya vedhase ,

Having offered obeisance to that venerable Lord [Śiva], to Śarva, the ordainer (Vedhas), to Rudra, the blue-necked (śitikaṇṭha) one, the beautiful-formed, and the radiant one.
कपर्दिने करालाय हर्यक्ष्णे वरदाय च ।
त्र्यक्ष्णे पूष्णो दन्तभिदे वामनाय शिवाय च ॥१३॥

13. kapardine karālāya haryakṣṇe varadāya ca ,

And to Kapardin (the one with matted hair), to the formidable, to the lion-eyed, and to the bestower of boons; to the three-eyed, to the one who broke Pūṣan's teeth, to the dwarf (Vāmana), and to the auspicious (śiva) one.
याम्यायाव्यक्तकेशाय सद्वृत्ते शंकराय च ।
क्षेम्याय हरिनेत्राय स्थाणवे पुरुषाय च ॥१४॥

14. yāmyāyāvyaktakeśāya sadvṛtte śaṁkarāya ca ,
kṣemyāya harinetrāya sthāṇave puruṣāya ca.

Salutations to the controller, to the one with unmanifested hair, to the one of good conduct, and to Śaṃkara. To the one who brings well-being, to the one whose eye is Hari (Viṣṇu), to the immovable one (sthāṇu), and to the cosmic person (puruṣa).

Salutations to the one with tawny hair, to the ascetic, to the emaciated one, and to the deliverer. To the radiant one, to the one with sacred fords, to the God of gods, and to the powerful one.

गिरिशाय प्रशान्ताय यतये चीरवाससे ॥१६॥

Salutations to the one wearing a turban, to the one with a beautiful face, to the thousand-eyed one, and to the bountiful one. To the lord of mountains, to the utterly peaceful one, to the ascetic (yati), and to the one wearing bark garments.
बिल्वदण्डाय सिद्धाय सर्वदण्डधराय च ।
मृगव्याधाय महते धन्विनेऽथ भवाय च ॥१७॥

17. bilvadaṇḍāya siddhāya sarvadaṇḍadharāya ca ,

Salutations to the one holding a Bilva staff, to the perfected one, to the bearer of all authority, and to the hunter of deer. To the great one, to the archer, and to the source of existence (bhava).
वराय सौम्यवक्त्राय पशुहस्ताय वर्षिणे ।
हिरण्यबाहवे राजन्नुग्राय पतये दिशाम् ॥१८॥

To the excellent one, whose face is gentle, who holds an animal in his hand, who showers blessings, whose arms are golden, O King, to the fierce one, the lord of the directions.
पशूनां पतये चैव भूतानां पतये तथा ।
वृषाय मातृभक्ताय सेनान्ये मध्यमाय च ॥१९॥

19. paśūnāṁ pataye caiva bhūtānāṁ pataye tathā ,
vṛṣāya mātṛbhaktāya senānye madhyamāya ca.

To the lord of animals (paśu), and indeed, to the lord of all beings; also, to the bull-like one, to the one devoted to his mother, to the commander of the army, and to the one who is the middle (or impartial).
स्रुवहस्ताय पतये धन्विने भार्गवाय च ।
अजाय कृष्णनेत्राय विरूपाक्षाय चैव ह ॥२०॥

20. sruvahastāya pataye dhanvine bhārgavāya ca ,

To the one holding a sacrificial ladle (sruva) in his hand, to the lord, to the archer, and to the descendant of Bhṛgu; to the unborn (aja), to the one with dark eyes, and indeed, to the one with distorted or unusual eyes.
तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राय तीक्ष्णाय वैश्वानरमुखाय च ।
महाद्युतयेऽनङ्गाय सर्वाङ्गाय प्रजावते ॥२१॥

To the one with sharp fangs, to the fierce one, and to the one whose mouth is the universal fire (Vaiśvānara); to the one of great splendor, to the bodiless one, to the one with a universal body, and to the progenitor of offspring.

And similarly, to the lord of Śukra, to the expansive one, to him who wears a hide as garment, to him adorned with a garland of skulls, and always to him with a golden crown.

To the wielder of the staff, to him of intense asceticism (tapas), and similarly to him of fierce deeds; and also to the thousand-headed one and the thousand-footed one. Salutations to him whose essential nature (svarūpa) is svadhā, to the multi-formed one, and to the tusked one.

The odd-eyed (virūpākṣam), the ten-armed, the one whose banner is the bull, the fierce, the immobile (sthāṇu), the auspicious one, the dreadful, the destroyer (śarva), and the lord of Gaurī, the supreme ruler.

सुवर्णमाहरिष्यन्तस्तत्र गच्छन्तु ते नराः ॥३१॥

Having thus offered obeisance to that Mahādeva, the powerful and great-souled (mahātman) one, O king, you will obtain that gold. Let those men who are to collect the gold go there.

ततोऽतिमानुषं सर्वं चक्रे यज्ञस्य संविधिम् ।

Vyāsa said: Thus addressed, the son of Kāraṃdhama acted upon his words. Thereafter, he made all the arrangements for the (yajña) Vedic ritual extraordinary. And there, the artisans made golden vessels.
बृहस्पतिस्तु तां श्रुत्वा मरुत्तस्य महीपतेः ।
समृद्धिमति देवेभ्यः संतापमकरोद्भृशम् ॥३३॥

33. bṛhaspatistu tāṁ śrutvā maruttasya mahīpateḥ ,

But Bṛhaspati, having heard of that exceedingly great prosperity of King Marutta, truly felt deep distress for the gods.

As he suffered intensely, he became extremely discolored and emaciated. [He thought/feared], 'Indeed, Samvarta, the wealthy one, will become my enemy.'

Having heard that he was intensely distressed, the king of gods, surrounded by the immortals, then approached Bṛhaspati and spoke these words.
