अर्जुन उवाच ।
राज्ञा कल्माषपादेन गुरौ ब्रह्मविदां वरे ।
कारणं किं पुरस्कृत्य भार्या वै संनियोजिता ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
rājñā kalmāṣapādena gurau brahmavidāṁ vare ,
kāraṇaṁ kiṁ puraskṛtya bhāryā vai saṁniyojitā.

vare kāraṇaṃ kim puraskṛtya bhāryā vai saṃniyojitā
1. Arjuna said, "What was the reason that King Kalmāṣapāda engaged his wife with the preceptor, who was the foremost among those who know Brahman (brahman)?"
जानता च परं धर्मं लोक्यं तेन महात्मना ।
अगम्यागमनं कस्माद्वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ।
कृतं तेन पुरा सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि पृच्छतः ॥२॥
2. jānatā ca paraṁ dharmaṁ lokyaṁ tena mahātmanā ,
agamyāgamanaṁ kasmādvasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ,
kṛtaṁ tena purā sarvaṁ vaktumarhasi pṛcchataḥ.
2. jānatā ca param dharmam lokyam tena
mahātmanā agamyāgamanaṃ kasmāt
vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā kṛtam tena
purā sarvam vaktum arhasi pṛcchataḥ
2. And by that great soul (mahātman) who understood the supreme natural law (dharma) beneficial to all people, why was the act of approaching an inaccessible woman performed by the great sage (mahātman) Vasiṣṭha? Please tell me, who am asking, all that he did previously.
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
धनंजय निबोधेदं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।
वसिष्ठं प्रति दुर्धर्षं तथामित्रसहं नृपम् ॥३॥
3. gandharva uvāca ,
dhanaṁjaya nibodhedaṁ yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi ,
vasiṣṭhaṁ prati durdharṣaṁ tathāmitrasahaṁ nṛpam.
3. gandharva uvāca dhanaṃjaya nibodha idam yat mām tvam
paripṛcchasi vasiṣṭham prati durdharṣam tathā amitrasaham nṛpam
3. The Gandharva said, "O Dhanañjaya, listen to this that you are asking me about Vasiṣṭha and the formidable King Amitrasaha."
कथितं ते मया पूर्वं यथा शप्तः स पार्थिवः ।
शक्तिना भरतश्रेष्ठ वासिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥४॥
4. kathitaṁ te mayā pūrvaṁ yathā śaptaḥ sa pārthivaḥ ,
śaktinā bharataśreṣṭha vāsiṣṭhena mahātmanā.
4. kathitam te mayā pūrvam yathā śaptaḥ sa pārthivaḥ
śaktinā bharataśreṣṭha vāsiṣṭhena mahātmanā
4. O best of the Bhāratas, I have already told you previously how that king was cursed by Śakti, the great soul (mahātman) and son of Vasiṣṭha.
स तु शापवशं प्राप्तः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ।
निर्जगाम पुराद्राजा सहदारः परंतपः ॥५॥
5. sa tu śāpavaśaṁ prāptaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
nirjagāma purādrājā sahadāraḥ paraṁtapaḥ.
5. sa tu śāpavaśam prāptaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ
nirjagāma purāt rājā sahadāraḥ paraṃtapaḥ
5. But that king, having fallen under the sway of the curse, departed from the city with his wife, his eyes bewildered by anger, he who was a tormentor of enemies.
अरण्यं निर्जनं गत्वा सदारः परिचक्रमे ।
नानामृगगणाकीर्णं नानासत्त्वसमाकुलम् ॥६॥
6. araṇyaṁ nirjanaṁ gatvā sadāraḥ paricakrame ,
nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṁ nānāsattvasamākulam.
6. araṇyam nirjanam gatvā sadāraḥ paricakrame
nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam nānāsattvasamākulam
6. With his wife, having gone to a desolate forest, he wandered around, [the forest] filled with various herds of deer and teeming with various creatures.
नानागुल्मलताच्छन्नं नानाद्रुमसमावृतम् ।
अरण्यं घोरसंनादं शापग्रस्तः परिभ्रमन् ॥७॥
7. nānāgulmalatācchannaṁ nānādrumasamāvṛtam ,
araṇyaṁ ghorasaṁnādaṁ śāpagrastaḥ paribhraman.
7. nānāgulmalatācchannam nānādrumasamāvṛtam
araṇyam ghorasaṃnādam śāpagrastaḥ paribhraman
7. Covered with various bushes and creepers, enveloped by various trees, and filled with dreadful sounds, he, being cursed (śāpaprasta), continued wandering through the forest.
स कदाचित्क्षुधाविष्टो मृगयन्भक्षमात्मनः ।
ददर्श सुपरिक्लिष्टः कस्मिंश्चिद्वननिर्झरे ।
ब्राह्मणीं ब्राह्मणं चैव मैथुनायोपसंगतौ ॥८॥
8. sa kadācitkṣudhāviṣṭo mṛgayanbhakṣamātmanaḥ ,
dadarśa suparikliṣṭaḥ kasmiṁścidvananirjhare ,
brāhmaṇīṁ brāhmaṇaṁ caiva maithunāyopasaṁgatau.
8. sa kadācit kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ mṛgayan
bhakṣam ātmanaḥ dadarśa suparikliṣṭaḥ
kasmiṃścit vananirjhare brāhmaṇīm
brāhmaṇam ca eva maithunāya upasaṅgatau
8. One day, he, greatly distressed and afflicted by hunger, while searching for his own (ātman) food, saw a Brāhmaṇa woman and a Brāhmaṇa engaged in sexual intercourse at a certain forest spring.
तौ समीक्ष्य तु वित्रस्तावकृतार्थौ प्रधावितौ ।
तयोश्च द्रवतोर्विप्रं जगृहे नृपतिर्बलात् ॥९॥
9. tau samīkṣya tu vitrastāvakṛtārthau pradhāvitau ,
tayośca dravatorvipraṁ jagṛhe nṛpatirbalāt.
9. tau samīkṣya tu vitrastau akṛtārthau pradhāvitau
tayoḥ ca dravatoḥ vipram jagṛhe nṛpatiḥ balāt
9. Having seen them, they, frightened and unfulfilled, ran away. And while those two were fleeing, the king forcibly seized the Brāhmaṇa.
दृष्ट्वा गृहीतं भर्तारमथ ब्राह्मण्यभाषत ।
शृणु राजन्वचो मह्यं यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि सुव्रत ॥१०॥
10. dṛṣṭvā gṛhītaṁ bhartāramatha brāhmaṇyabhāṣata ,
śṛṇu rājanvaco mahyaṁ yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi suvrata.
10. dṛṣṭvā gṛhītam bhartāram atha brāhmaṇī abhāṣata
śṛṇu rājan vacaḥ mahyam yat tvām vakṣyāmi suvrat
10. Then, having seen her husband seized, the Brāhmaṇa woman spoke: "O King, O virtuous one, listen to my words which I will say to you."
आदित्यवंशप्रभवस्त्वं हि लोकपरिश्रुतः ।
अप्रमत्तः स्थितो धर्मे गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतः ॥११॥
11. ādityavaṁśaprabhavastvaṁ hi lokapariśrutaḥ ,
apramattaḥ sthito dharme guruśuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ.
11. ādityavaṃśaprabhavaḥ tvam hi lokapariśrutaḥ
apramattaḥ sthitaḥ dharme guruśuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ
11. You are indeed famous in the world as having originated from the solar dynasty. You remain vigilant, dedicated to your intrinsic nature (dharma), and devoted to serving your preceptor.
शापं प्राप्तोऽसि दुर्धर्ष न पापं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
ऋतुकाले तु संप्राप्ते भर्त्रास्म्यद्य समागता ॥१२॥
12. śāpaṁ prāpto'si durdharṣa na pāpaṁ kartumarhasi ,
ṛtukāle tu saṁprāpte bhartrāsmyadya samāgatā.
12. śāpam prāptaḥ asi durdharṣa na pāpam kartum arhasi
ṛtukāle tu saṃprāpte bhartrā asmi adya samāgatā
12. You have received a curse, O formidable one, and you should not commit a sin. My husband and I have come together today, for the proper season has arrived.
अकृतार्था ह्यहं भर्त्रा प्रसवार्थश्च मे महान् ।
प्रसीद नृपतिश्रेष्ठ भर्ता मेऽयं विसृज्यताम् ॥१३॥
13. akṛtārthā hyahaṁ bhartrā prasavārthaśca me mahān ,
prasīda nṛpatiśreṣṭha bhartā me'yaṁ visṛjyatām.
13. akṛtārthā hi aham bhartrā prsavārthaḥ ca me mahān
prasīda nṛpatiśreṣṭha bhartā me ayam visṛjyatām
13. Indeed, I have not achieved my purpose with my husband, and my desire for offspring is great. Please be gracious, O best of kings, and let this husband of mine be released.
एवं विक्रोशमानायास्तस्याः स सुनृशंसकृत् ।
भर्तारं भक्षयामास व्याघ्रो मृगमिवेप्सितम् ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ vikrośamānāyāstasyāḥ sa sunṛśaṁsakṛt ,
bhartāraṁ bhakṣayāmāsa vyāghro mṛgamivepsitam.
14. evam vikrośamānāyāḥ tasyāḥ sa sunṛśaṃsakṛt
bhartāram bhakṣayāmāsa vyāghraḥ mṛgam iva īpsitam
14. While she was wailing thus, that extremely cruel one devoured her husband, just as a tiger devours its desired deer.
तस्याः क्रोधाभिभूताया यदश्रु न्यपतद्भुवि ।
सोऽग्निः समभवद्दीप्तस्तं च देशं व्यदीपयत् ॥१५॥
15. tasyāḥ krodhābhibhūtāyā yadaśru nyapatadbhuvi ,
so'gniḥ samabhavaddīptastaṁ ca deśaṁ vyadīpayat.
15. tasyāḥ krodhābhibhūtāyāḥ yat aśru nyapatat bhuvi
saḥ agniḥ samabhavat dīptaḥ tam ca deśam vyadīpayat
15. The tear that fell to the ground from her, who was overcome with rage, became a blazing fire, and it illuminated that region.
ततः सा शोकसंतप्ता भर्तृव्यसनदुःखिता ।
कल्माषपादं राजर्षिमशपद्ब्राह्मणी रुषा ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ sā śokasaṁtaptā bhartṛvyasanaduḥkhitā ,
kalmāṣapādaṁ rājarṣimaśapadbrāhmaṇī ruṣā.
16. tataḥ sā śoka-saṃtaptā bhartṛ-vyasana-duḥkhitā
kalmāṣapādam rājarṣim aśapat brāhmaṇī ruṣā
16. Then, distressed by grief and deeply saddened by her husband's calamity, that Brahmani angrily cursed the royal sage Kalmashapada.
यस्मान्ममाकृतार्थायास्त्वया क्षुद्र नृशंसवत् ।
प्रेक्षन्त्या भक्षितो मेऽद्य प्रभुर्भर्ता महायशाः ॥१७॥
17. yasmānmamākṛtārthāyāstvayā kṣudra nṛśaṁsavat ,
prekṣantyā bhakṣito me'dya prabhurbhartā mahāyaśāḥ.
17. yasmāt mama akṛta-arthāyāḥ tvayā kṣudra nṛśaṃsa-vat
prekṣantyā bhakṣitaḥ me adya prabhuḥ bhartā mahā-yaśāḥ
17. Because, O vile one, while I, whose desire remained unfulfilled, was watching, my highly renowned lord and husband was devoured by you today, just like a cruel person.
तस्मात्त्वमपि दुर्बुद्धे मच्छापपरिविक्षतः ।
पत्नीमृतावनुप्राप्य सद्यस्त्यक्ष्यसि जीवितम् ॥१८॥
18. tasmāttvamapi durbuddhe macchāpaparivikṣataḥ ,
patnīmṛtāvanuprāpya sadyastyakṣyasi jīvitam.
18. tasmāt tvam api dur-buddhe mat-śāpa-parivikṣataḥ
patnī-mṛtau anuprāpya sadyaḥ tyakṣyasi jīvitam
18. Therefore, O foolish one, wounded by my curse, you too shall immediately abandon your life upon your wife's death.
यस्य चर्षेर्वसिष्ठस्य त्वया पुत्रा विनाशिताः ।
तेन संगम्य ते भार्या तनयं जनयिष्यति ।
स ते वंशकरः पुत्रो भविष्यति नृपाधम ॥१९॥
19. yasya carṣervasiṣṭhasya tvayā putrā vināśitāḥ ,
tena saṁgamya te bhāryā tanayaṁ janayiṣyati ,
sa te vaṁśakaraḥ putro bhaviṣyati nṛpādhama.
19. yasya ca ṛṣeḥ vasiṣṭhasya tvayā putrāḥ
vināśitāḥ tena saṃgamya te bhāryā
tanayam janayiṣyati saḥ te vaṃśakaraḥ
putraḥ bhaviṣyati nṛpa-adhama
19. And your wife, having united with that sage Vasishtha – whose sons were destroyed by you, O lowest of kings – will bear a son. That son will be the one to continue your lineage.
एवं शप्त्वा तु राजानं सा तमाङ्गिरसी शुभा ।
तस्यैव संनिधौ दीप्तं प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ॥२०॥
20. evaṁ śaptvā tu rājānaṁ sā tamāṅgirasī śubhā ,
tasyaiva saṁnidhau dīptaṁ praviveśa hutāśanam.
20. evam śaptvā tu rājānam sā tam āṅgirasī śubhā
tasya eva saṃnidhau dīptam praviveśa hutāśanam
20. Having thus cursed the king, that auspicious daughter of Angiras (Angirasi) then entered the blazing fire in his very presence.
वसिष्ठश्च महाभागः सर्वमेतदपश्यत ।
ज्ञानयोगेन महता तपसा च परंतप ॥२१॥
21. vasiṣṭhaśca mahābhāgaḥ sarvametadapaśyata ,
jñānayogena mahatā tapasā ca paraṁtapa.
21. vasiṣṭhaḥ ca mahābhāgaḥ sarvam etat apaśyata
jñānayogena mahatā tapasā ca parantapa
21. O vanquisher of foes, the highly esteemed Vaśiṣṭha perceived all this through great application of knowledge (jñāna-yoga) and asceticism (tapas).
मुक्तशापश्च राजर्षिः कालेन महता ततः ।
ऋतुकालेऽभिपतितो मदयन्त्या निवारितः ॥२२॥
22. muktaśāpaśca rājarṣiḥ kālena mahatā tataḥ ,
ṛtukāle'bhipatito madayantyā nivāritaḥ.
22. muktaśāpaḥ ca rājarṣiḥ kālena mahatā tataḥ
ṛtukāle abhipatitaḥ madayantyā nivāritaḥ
22. And then, after a considerable time, the royal sage, freed from the curse, was prevented by Madayantī when he approached her during the fertile season.
न हि सस्मार नृपतिस्तं शापं शापमोहितः ।
देव्याः सोऽथ वचः श्रुत्वा स तस्या नृपसत्तमः ।
तं च शापमनुस्मृत्य पर्यतप्यद्भृशं तदा ॥२३॥
23. na hi sasmāra nṛpatistaṁ śāpaṁ śāpamohitaḥ ,
devyāḥ so'tha vacaḥ śrutvā sa tasyā nṛpasattamaḥ ,
taṁ ca śāpamanusmṛtya paryatapyadbhṛśaṁ tadā.
23. na hi sasmāra nṛpatiḥ tam śāpam
śāpamohitaḥ devyāḥ saḥ atha vacaḥ śrutvā
saḥ tasyāḥ nṛpasattamaḥ tam ca
śāpam anusmṛtya paryatapyat bhṛśam tadā
23. Indeed, the king, deluded by the curse, did not remember it. Then, upon hearing the words of the queen, that best of kings, remembering that curse, greatly repented at that time.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्राजा वसिष्ठं संन्ययोजयत् ।
स्वदारे भरतश्रेष्ठ शापदोषसमन्वितः ॥२४॥
24. etasmātkāraṇādrājā vasiṣṭhaṁ saṁnyayojayat ,
svadāre bharataśreṣṭha śāpadoṣasamanvitaḥ.
24. etasmat kāraṇāt rājā vasiṣṭham samniyayojayat
svadāre bharataśreṣṭha śāpadoṣasamanvitaḥ
24. O best among the Bharatas, for this reason, the king, who was afflicted by the consequences of the curse, engaged Vaśiṣṭha concerning his own wife.
