वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रतिज्ञाय तु दुःषन्ते प्रतियाते शकुन्तला ।
गर्भं सुषाव वामोरुः कुमारममितौजसम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
pratijñāya tu duḥṣante pratiyāte śakuntalā ,
garbhaṁ suṣāva vāmoruḥ kumāramamitaujasam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: But after Duṣyanta had given his promise and departed, Śakuntalā, the beautiful-thighed lady, gave birth to a son of immeasurable prowess.
त्रिषु वर्षेषु पूर्णेषु दिप्तानलसमद्युतिम् ।
रूपौदार्यगुणोपेतं दौःषन्तिं जनमेजय ॥२॥
2. triṣu varṣeṣu pūrṇeṣu diptānalasamadyutim ,
rūpaudāryaguṇopetaṁ dauḥṣantiṁ janamejaya.
2. triṣu varṣeṣu pūrṇeṣu dīptānalasamadyutim
rūpaudāryaguṇopetam dauḥṣantim janamejaya
2. O Janamejaya, when three years were complete, the son of Duṣyanta, who shone with the brilliance of a blazing fire and was endowed with beauty, generosity, and other noble qualities, (was so manifest).
जातकर्मादिसंस्कारं कण्वः पुण्यकृतां वरः ।
तस्याथ कारयामास वर्धमानस्य धीमतः ॥३॥
3. jātakarmādisaṁskāraṁ kaṇvaḥ puṇyakṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
tasyātha kārayāmāsa vardhamānasya dhīmataḥ.
3. jātakarmādisaṃskāram kaṇvaḥ puṇyakṛtām varaḥ
tasya atha kārayāmāsa vardhamānasya dhīmataḥ
3. Then, Kaṇva, the foremost among the virtuous, had the birth rituals and other saṃskāras performed for that intelligent child as he grew.
दन्तैः शुक्लैः शिखरिभिः सिंहसंहननो युवा ।
चक्राङ्कितकरः श्रीमान्महामूर्धा महाबलः ।
कुमारो देवगर्भाभः स तत्राशु व्यवर्धत ॥४॥
4. dantaiḥ śuklaiḥ śikharibhiḥ siṁhasaṁhanano yuvā ,
cakrāṅkitakaraḥ śrīmānmahāmūrdhā mahābalaḥ ,
kumāro devagarbhābhaḥ sa tatrāśu vyavardhata.
4. dantaiḥ śuklaiḥ śikharibhiḥ
siṃhasaṃhananaḥ yuvā cakrāṅkitakaraḥ śrīmān
mahāmūrdhā mahābalaḥ kumāraḥ
devagarbhābhaḥ saḥ tatra āśu vyavardhata
4. He, the young boy, with white, pointed teeth, a lion-like build, hands marked with a discus, glorious, with a large head and great strength, resembling a divine child, quickly grew up there.
षड्वर्ष एव बालः स कण्वाश्रमपदं प्रति ।
व्याघ्रान्सिंहान्वराहांश्च गजांश्च महिषांस्तथा ॥५॥
5. ṣaḍvarṣa eva bālaḥ sa kaṇvāśramapadaṁ prati ,
vyāghrānsiṁhānvarāhāṁśca gajāṁśca mahiṣāṁstathā.
5. ṣaḍvarṣaḥ eva bālaḥ saḥ kaṇvāśramapadam prati
vyāghrān siṃhān varāhān ca gajān ca mahiṣān tathā
5. He, the boy, at just six years old, near Kanva's hermitage, (would catch) tigers, lions, boars, elephants, and buffaloes.
बद्ध्वा वृक्षेषु बलवानाश्रमस्य समन्ततः ।
आरोहन्दमयंश्चैव क्रीडंश्च परिधावति ॥६॥
6. baddhvā vṛkṣeṣu balavānāśramasya samantataḥ ,
ārohandamayaṁścaiva krīḍaṁśca paridhāvati.
6. baddhvā vṛkṣeṣu balavān āśramasya samantataḥ
ārohan damayan ca eva krīḍan ca paridhāvati
6. The strong boy, having tied (them) to trees all around the hermitage, would run around, climbing upon them, taming them, and playing.
ततोऽस्य नाम चक्रुस्ते कण्वाश्रमनिवासिनः ।
अस्त्वयं सर्वदमनः सर्वं हि दमयत्ययम् ॥७॥
7. tato'sya nāma cakruste kaṇvāśramanivāsinaḥ ,
astvayaṁ sarvadamanaḥ sarvaṁ hi damayatyayam.
7. tataḥ asya nāma cakruḥ te kaṇvāśramanivāsinaḥ
astu ayam sarvadamanaḥ sarvam hi damayati ayam
7. Then, the residents of Kanva's hermitage gave him a name: "Let him be Sarvadamana, for this one indeed tames all."
स सर्वदमनो नाम कुमारः समपद्यत ।
विक्रमेणौजसा चैव बलेन च समन्वितः ॥८॥
8. sa sarvadamano nāma kumāraḥ samapadyata ,
vikrameṇaujasā caiva balena ca samanvitaḥ.
8. saḥ sarvadamanaḥ nāma kumāraḥ samapadyata
vikrameṇa ojasā ca eva balena ca samanvitaḥ
8. That boy became known by the name Sarvadamana, endowed with valor, vitality, and strength.
तं कुमारमृषिर्दृष्ट्वा कर्म चास्यातिमानुषम् ।
समयो यौवराज्यायेत्यब्रवीच्च शकुन्तलाम् ॥९॥
9. taṁ kumāramṛṣirdṛṣṭvā karma cāsyātimānuṣam ,
samayo yauvarājyāyetyabravīcca śakuntalām.
9. tam kumāram ṛṣiḥ dṛṣṭvā karma ca asya atimānuṣam
samayaḥ yauvarājyāya iti abravīt ca śakuntalām
9. Having seen that boy and his superhuman deeds, the sage then said to Śakuntalā, "It is the proper time for him to be made the crown prince."
तस्य तद्बलमाज्ञाय कण्वः शिष्यानुवाच ह ।
शकुन्तलामिमां शीघ्रं सहपुत्रामितोऽऽश्रमात् ।
भर्त्रे प्रापयताद्यैव सर्वलक्षणपूजिताम् ॥१०॥
10. tasya tadbalamājñāya kaṇvaḥ śiṣyānuvāca ha ,
śakuntalāmimāṁ śīghraṁ sahaputrāmito''śramāt ,
bhartre prāpayatādyaiva sarvalakṣaṇapūjitām.
10. tasya tat balam ājñāya kaṇvaḥ śiṣyān
uvāca ha śakuntalām imām śīghram
saha-putrām itaḥ āśramāt bhartre
prāpayata adya eva sarva-lakṣaṇa-pūjitām
10. Realizing the boy's strength, Kaṇva then said to his disciples, "Today, immediately, take this Śakuntalā, who is endowed with all auspicious marks, along with her son, from this hermitage to her husband."
नारीणां चिरवासो हि बान्धवेषु न रोचते ।
कीर्तिचारित्रधर्मघ्नस्तस्मान्नयत माचिरम् ॥११॥
11. nārīṇāṁ ciravāso hi bāndhaveṣu na rocate ,
kīrticāritradharmaghnastasmānnayata māciram.
11. nārīṇām cira-vāsaḥ hi bāndhaveṣu na rocate
kīrti-cāritra-dharma-ghnaḥ tasmāt nayata mā ciram
11. Indeed, a long stay for women among their relatives is not proper; it diminishes their reputation, character, and dharma. Therefore, take her without delay.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे प्रातिष्ठन्तामितौजसः ।
शकुन्तलां पुरस्कृत्य सपुत्रां गजसाह्वयम् ॥१२॥
12. tathetyuktvā tu te sarve prātiṣṭhantāmitaujasaḥ ,
śakuntalāṁ puraskṛtya saputrāṁ gajasāhvayam.
12. tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve prātiṣṭhanta amita-ojasaḥ
śakuntalām puraskṛtya sa-putrām gaja-sāhvayam
12. Having said, "So be it," all of them, possessing immense energy, set out for Hastinapura, leading Śakuntalā and her son.
गृहीत्वामरगर्भाभं पुत्रं कमललोचनम् ।
आजगाम ततः शुभ्रा दुःषन्तविदिताद्वनात् ॥१३॥
13. gṛhītvāmaragarbhābhaṁ putraṁ kamalalocanam ,
ājagāma tataḥ śubhrā duḥṣantaviditādvanāt.
13. gṛhītvā amara-garbhābham putram kamala-locanam
ājagāma tataḥ śubhrā duḥṣanta-viditāt vanāt
13. Then, the radiant Śakuntalā came, carrying her son, who resembled a divine embryo and possessed lotus-like eyes, from that forest known to Duṣyanta.
अभिसृत्य च राजानं विदिता सा प्रवेशिता ।
सह तेनैव पुत्रेण तरुणादित्यवर्चसा ॥१४॥
14. abhisṛtya ca rājānaṁ viditā sā praveśitā ,
saha tenaiva putreṇa taruṇādityavarcasā.
14. abhisṛtya ca rājānam viditā sā praveśitā
saha tena eva putreṇa taruṇādityavarcasā
14. Having approached the king, she was recognized and admitted, accompanied by that very son who shone with the radiance of the rising sun.
पूजयित्वा यथान्यायमब्रवीत्तं शकुन्तला ।
अयं पुत्रस्त्वया राजन्यौवराज्येऽभिषिच्यताम् ॥१५॥
15. pūjayitvā yathānyāyamabravīttaṁ śakuntalā ,
ayaṁ putrastvayā rājanyauvarājye'bhiṣicyatām.
15. pūjayitvā yathānyāyam abravīt tam śakuntalā
ayam putraḥ tvayā rājan yauvarājye abhiṣicyatām
15. After honoring him appropriately, Shakuntala addressed the king, saying, 'O King, may this son be anointed by you as the crown prince.'
त्वया ह्ययं सुतो राजन्मय्युत्पन्नः सुरोपमः ।
यथासमयमेतस्मिन्वर्तस्व पुरुषोत्तम ॥१६॥
16. tvayā hyayaṁ suto rājanmayyutpannaḥ suropamaḥ ,
yathāsamayametasminvartasva puruṣottama.
16. tvayā hi ayam sutaḥ rājan mayi utpannaḥ surōpamaḥ
yathāsamayam etasmin vartasva puruṣottama
16. Indeed, O King, this divine son was born from me through you. O Best of Men, fulfill the agreement regarding him.
यथा समागमे पूर्वं कृतः स समयस्त्वया ।
तं स्मरस्व महाभाग कण्वाश्रमपदं प्रति ॥१७॥
17. yathā samāgame pūrvaṁ kṛtaḥ sa samayastvayā ,
taṁ smarasva mahābhāga kaṇvāśramapadaṁ prati.
17. yathā samāgame pūrvam kṛtaḥ saḥ samayaḥ tvayā
tam smarasva mahābhāga kaṇvāśramapadam prati
17. O fortunate one, remember that agreement you made previously at the time of our union, concerning Kanva's hermitage.
सोऽथ श्रुत्वैव तद्वाक्यं तस्या राजा स्मरन्नपि ।
अब्रवीन्न स्मरामीति कस्य त्वं दुष्टतापसि ॥१८॥
18. so'tha śrutvaiva tadvākyaṁ tasyā rājā smarannapi ,
abravīnna smarāmīti kasya tvaṁ duṣṭatāpasi.
18. saḥ atha śrutvā eva tat vākyam tasyāḥ rājā smaran
api abravīt na smarāmi iti kasya tvam duṣṭa tāpasi
18. Then the king, though he remembered her words, replied, 'I do not remember! Whose [daughter] are you, O wicked ascetic woman?'
धर्मकामार्थसंबन्धं न स्मरामि त्वया सह ।
गच्छ वा तिष्ठ वा कामं यद्वापीच्छसि तत्कुरु ॥१९॥
19. dharmakāmārthasaṁbandhaṁ na smarāmi tvayā saha ,
gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā kāmaṁ yadvāpīcchasi tatkuru.
19. dharmakāmārthasambandham na smarāmi tvayā saha gaccha
vā tiṣṭha vā kāmam yat vā api icchasi tat kuru
19. I do not recall having any association with you concerning dharma, material prosperity, or desire. Go or stay as you please, or do whatever else you wish.
सैवमुक्ता वरारोहा व्रीडितेव मनस्विनी ।
विसंज्ञेव च दुःखेन तस्थौ स्थाणुरिवाचला ॥२०॥
20. saivamuktā varārohā vrīḍiteva manasvinī ,
visaṁjñeva ca duḥkhena tasthau sthāṇurivācalā.
20. sā evam uktā varārohā vrīḍitā iva manasvinī
visañjñā iva ca duḥkhena tasthau sthāṇuḥ iva acalā
20. She, thus addressed, the beautiful, high-hipped woman, who was also spirited, stood motionless like a pillar, as if embarrassed and made senseless by sorrow.
संरम्भामर्षताम्राक्षी स्फुरमाणोष्ठसंपुटा ।
कटाक्षैर्निर्दहन्तीव तिर्यग्राजानमैक्षत ॥२१॥
21. saṁrambhāmarṣatāmrākṣī sphuramāṇoṣṭhasaṁpuṭā ,
kaṭākṣairnirdahantīva tiryagrājānamaikṣata.
21. saṃrambhāmarṣatāmrākṣī sphuramāṇoṣṭhasampuṭā
kaṭākṣaiḥ nirdahantī iva tiryak rājānam aikṣata
21. Her eyes reddened with rage and indignation, and her lips trembling and pressed together, she looked askance at the king with sidelong glances, as if burning him.
आकारं गूहमाना च मन्युनाभिसमीरिता ।
तपसा संभृतं तेजो धारयामास वै तदा ॥२२॥
22. ākāraṁ gūhamānā ca manyunābhisamīritā ,
tapasā saṁbhṛtaṁ tejo dhārayāmāsa vai tadā.
22. ākāram guhamānā ca manyunā abhisamīritā
tapasā saṃbhṛtam tejaḥ dhārayāmāsa vai tadā
22. And concealing her feelings, she, impelled by anger, then indeed sustained the spiritual energy accumulated through her ascetic practices (tapas).
सा मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा दुःखामर्षसमन्विता ।
भर्तारमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य क्रुद्धा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२३॥
23. sā muhūrtamiva dhyātvā duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitā ,
bhartāramabhisaṁprekṣya kruddhā vacanamabravīt.
23. sā muhūrtam iva dhyātvā duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitā
bhartāram abhisamprekṣya kruddhā vacanam abravīt
23. She, filled with sorrow and indignation, having pondered for a moment, and then having observed her husband, angrily spoke these words.
जानन्नपि महाराज कस्मादेवं प्रभाषसे ।
न जानामीति निःसङ्गं यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा ॥२४॥
24. jānannapi mahārāja kasmādevaṁ prabhāṣase ,
na jānāmīti niḥsaṅgaṁ yathānyaḥ prākṛtastathā.
24. jānan api mahārāja kasmāt evam prabhāṣase na
jānāmi iti niḥsaṅgam yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ tathā
24. O great king, even though you know, why do you speak like this? You say, 'I do not know,' unreservedly, just like any ordinary, common person.
अत्र ते हृदयं वेद सत्यस्यैवानृतस्य च ।
कल्याण बत साक्षी त्वं मात्मानमवमन्यथाः ॥२५॥
25. atra te hṛdayaṁ veda satyasyaivānṛtasya ca ,
kalyāṇa bata sākṣī tvaṁ mātmānamavamanyathāḥ.
25. atra te hṛdayam veda satyasya eva anṛtasya ca
kalyāṇa bata sākṣī tvam mā ātmānam avamanyathāḥ
25. Here, your heart knows both truth and falsehood. O blessed one, indeed, you are the witness! Do not disrespect your own self.
योऽन्यथा सन्तमात्मानमन्यथा प्रतिपद्यते ।
किं तेन न कृतं पापं चोरेणात्मापहारिणा ॥२६॥
26. yo'nyathā santamātmānamanyathā pratipadyate ,
kiṁ tena na kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ coreṇātmāpahāriṇā.
26. yaḥ anyathā santam ātmānam anyathā pratipadyate
kim tena na kṛtam pāpam coreṇa ātmāpahāriṇā
26. He who considers his own true self to be something other than what it is – what sin has not been committed by that thief, that self-robber?
एकोऽहमस्मीति च मन्यसे त्वं न हृच्छयं वेत्सि मुनिं पुराणम् ।
यो वेदिता कर्मणः पापकस्य तस्यान्तिके त्वं वृजिनं करोषि ॥२७॥
27. eko'hamasmīti ca manyase tvaṁ; na hṛcchayaṁ vetsi muniṁ purāṇam ,
yo veditā karmaṇaḥ pāpakasya; tasyāntike tvaṁ vṛjinaṁ karoṣi.
27. ekaḥ aham asmi iti ca manyase tvam
na hṛcchayam vetsi munim purāṇam
yaḥ veditā karmaṇaḥ pāpakasya
tasya antike tvam vṛjinam karoṣi
27. You think, 'I am alone,' and you do not know the ancient sage residing in your heart. You commit evil in the presence of that one who is the knower of sinful karma.
मन्यते पापकं कृत्वा न कश्चिद्वेत्ति मामिति ।
विदन्ति चैनं देवाश्च स्वश्चैवान्तरपूरुषः ॥२८॥
28. manyate pāpakaṁ kṛtvā na kaścidvetti māmiti ,
vidanti cainaṁ devāśca svaścaivāntarapūruṣaḥ.
28. manyate pāpakam kṛtvā na kaścit vetti mām iti
vidanti ca enam devāḥ ca svaḥ ca eva antarapuruṣaḥ
28. Having committed a sinful deed, one thinks, 'No one knows me.' But the gods know him, and so does the inner puruṣa within him.
आदित्यचन्द्रावनिलानलौ च द्यौर्भूमिरापो हृदयं यमश्च ।
अहश्च रात्रिश्च उभे च संध्ये धर्मश्च जानाति नरस्य वृत्तम् ॥२९॥
29. ādityacandrāvanilānalau ca; dyaurbhūmirāpo hṛdayaṁ yamaśca ,
ahaśca rātriśca ubhe ca saṁdhye; dharmaśca jānāti narasya vṛttam.
29. ādityacandrāv anilānalau ca dyauḥ
bhūmiḥ āpaḥ hṛdayam yamaḥ ca |
ahaḥ ca rātriḥ ca ubhe ca saṃdhye
dharmaḥ ca jānāti narasya vṛttam
29. The sun, moon, wind, fire, sky, earth, waters, heart, Yama, day, night, both twilight periods, and dharma – all these know the conduct of a human being.
यमो वैवस्वतस्तस्य निर्यातयति दुष्कृतम् ।
हृदि स्थितः कर्मसाक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञो यस्य तुष्यति ॥३०॥
30. yamo vaivasvatastasya niryātayati duṣkṛtam ,
hṛdi sthitaḥ karmasākṣī kṣetrajño yasya tuṣyati.
30. yamaḥ vaivasvataḥ tasya niryātayati duṣkṛtam |
hṛdi sthitaḥ karmasākṣī kṣetrajñaḥ yasya tuṣyati
30. Yama, the son of Vivasvat, inflicts punishment for the evil deeds of that person whose kṣetrajña (the inner self), the witness of karma residing in the heart, is pleased (with their actions or repentance).
न तु तुष्यति यस्यैष पुरुषस्य दुरात्मनः ।
तं यमः पापकर्माणं निर्यातयति दुष्कृतम् ॥३१॥
31. na tu tuṣyati yasyaiṣa puruṣasya durātmanaḥ ,
taṁ yamaḥ pāpakarmāṇaṁ niryātayati duṣkṛtam.
31. na tu tuṣyati yasya eṣaḥ puruṣasya durātmanaḥ
| tam yamaḥ pāpakarmāṇam niryātayati duṣkṛtam
31. But if this (kṣetrajña) is not pleased with an evil-minded person, then Yama punishes that evil-doer for his misdeeds.
अवमन्यात्मनात्मानमन्यथा प्रतिपद्यते ।
देवा न तस्य श्रेयांसो यस्यात्मापि न कारणम् ॥३२॥
32. avamanyātmanātmānamanyathā pratipadyate ,
devā na tasya śreyāṁso yasyātmāpi na kāraṇam.
32. avamanya ātmanā ātmānam anyathā pratipadyate |
devāḥ na tasya śreyāṃsaḥ yasya ātmā api na kāraṇam
32. When one despises one's own self (conscience) and acts contrary to it, then even the gods are not beneficial to that person, because their own self is not a guiding principle for them.
स्वयं प्राप्तेति मामेवं मावमंस्थाः पतिव्रताम् ।
अर्घ्यार्हां नार्चयसि मां स्वयं भार्यामुपस्थिताम् ॥३३॥
33. svayaṁ prāpteti māmevaṁ māvamaṁsthāḥ pativratām ,
arghyārhāṁ nārcayasi māṁ svayaṁ bhāryāmupasthitām.
33. svayam prāptā iti mām evam mā avamaṃsthāḥ pativratām
| arghyārhām na arcayasi mām svayam bhāryām upasthitām
33. Do not disrespect me, a devoted wife, thinking 'she has come by herself.' You do not honor me, your own wife who has personally approached you, even though I am worthy of hospitality.
किमर्थं मां प्राकृतवदुपप्रेक्षसि संसदि ।
न खल्वहमिदं शून्ये रौमि किं न शृणोषि मे ॥३४॥
34. kimarthaṁ māṁ prākṛtavadupaprekṣasi saṁsadi ,
na khalvahamidaṁ śūnye raumi kiṁ na śṛṇoṣi me.
34. kimartham mām prākṛtavat upaprekṣasi saṃsadi na
khalu aham idam śūnye raumi kim na śṛṇoṣi me
34. Why do you disregard me like a common woman in this assembly? Indeed, I am not crying out this in an empty place. Why do you not hear my words?
यदि मे याचमानाया वचनं न करिष्यसि ।
दुःषन्त शतधा मूर्धा ततस्तेऽद्य फलिष्यति ॥३५॥
35. yadi me yācamānāyā vacanaṁ na kariṣyasi ,
duḥṣanta śatadhā mūrdhā tataste'dya phaliṣyati.
35. yadi me yācamānāyāḥ vacanam na kariṣyasi
duḥṣanta śatadhā mūrdhā tataḥ te adya phaliṣyati
35. O Duṣyanta, if you do not heed the plea of me, who am imploring you, then today your head will surely split into a hundred pieces.
भार्यां पतिः संप्रविश्य स यस्माज्जायते पुनः ।
जायाया इति जायात्वं पुराणाः कवयो विदुः ॥३६॥
36. bhāryāṁ patiḥ saṁpraviśya sa yasmājjāyate punaḥ ,
jāyāyā iti jāyātvaṁ purāṇāḥ kavayo viduḥ.
36. bhāryām patiḥ sam praviśya saḥ yasmāt jāyate
punaḥ jāyāyāḥ iti jāyātvam purāṇāḥ kavayaḥ viduḥ
36. Ancient sages know that the essence of "jāyā" (wife) lies in this: because a husband, having entered his wife, is reborn through her.
यदागमवतः पुंसस्तदपत्यं प्रजायते ।
तत्तारयति संतत्या पूर्वप्रेतान्पितामहान् ॥३७॥
37. yadāgamavataḥ puṁsastadapatyaṁ prajāyate ,
tattārayati saṁtatyā pūrvapretānpitāmahān.
37. yat āgamavataḥ puṃsaḥ tat apatyam prajāyate
tat tārayati santatyā pūrvapretān pitāmahān
37. From a man who adheres to dharma, an offspring is born. That offspring, through the continuation of the lineage, delivers the departed ancestors.
पुन्नाम्नो नरकाद्यस्मात्पितरं त्रायते सुतः ।
तस्मात्पुत्र इति प्रोक्तः स्वयमेव स्वयम्भुवा ॥३८॥
38. punnāmno narakādyasmātpitaraṁ trāyate sutaḥ ,
tasmātputra iti proktaḥ svayameva svayambhuvā.
38. punnāmnaḥ narakāt yasmāt pitaram trāyate sutaḥ
tasmāt putraḥ iti proktaḥ svayam eva svayambhuvā
38. Because a son delivers his father from the hell named 'Put', he is therefore declared to be a 'putra' (son) by Svayambhū (the Self-Existent Lord) himself.
सा भार्या या गृहे दक्षा सा भार्या या प्रजावती ।
सा भार्या या पतिप्राणा सा भार्या या पतिव्रता ॥३९॥
39. sā bhāryā yā gṛhe dakṣā sā bhāryā yā prajāvatī ,
sā bhāryā yā patiprāṇā sā bhāryā yā pativratā.
39. sā bhāryā yā gṛhe dakṣā sā bhāryā yā prajāvatī
sā bhāryā yā patiprāṇā sā bhāryā yā pativratā
39. A true wife is one who is capable in household management, one who is blessed with children, one whose very life is her husband, and one who is devoted to her husband.
अर्धं भार्या मनुष्यस्य भार्या श्रेष्ठतमः सखा ।
भार्या मूलं त्रिवर्गस्य भार्या मित्रं मरिष्यतः ॥४०॥
40. ardhaṁ bhāryā manuṣyasya bhāryā śreṣṭhatamaḥ sakhā ,
bhāryā mūlaṁ trivargasya bhāryā mitraṁ mariṣyataḥ.
40. ardham bhāryā manuṣyasya bhāryā śreṣṭhatamaḥ sakhā
bhāryā mūlam trivargasya bhāryā mitram mariṣyataḥ
40. A wife is one half of a man, and a wife is the best of friends. A wife is the foundation of the trivarga (dharma, artha, and kāma), and a wife is a companion to one who is facing death.
भार्यावन्तः क्रियावन्तः सभार्या गृहमेधिनः ।
भार्यावन्तः प्रमोदन्ते भार्यावन्तः श्रियान्विताः ॥४१॥
41. bhāryāvantaḥ kriyāvantaḥ sabhāryā gṛhamedhinaḥ ,
bhāryāvantaḥ pramodante bhāryāvantaḥ śriyānvitāḥ.
41. bhāryāvantaḥ kriyāvantaḥ sabhāryāḥ gṛhamedhinaḥ
bhāryāvantaḥ pramodante bhāryāvantaḥ śriyānvitāḥ
41. Those who have wives are active (in their duties); householders are (always) with their wives. Those who have wives rejoice, and those who have wives are endowed with prosperity.
सखायः प्रविविक्तेषु भवन्त्येताः प्रियंवदाः ।
पितरो धर्मकार्येषु भवन्त्यार्तस्य मातरः ॥४२॥
42. sakhāyaḥ pravivikteṣu bhavantyetāḥ priyaṁvadāḥ ,
pitaro dharmakāryeṣu bhavantyārtasya mātaraḥ.
42. sakhāyaḥ pravivikteṣu bhavanti etāḥ priyaṃvadāḥ
pitaraḥ dharmakāryeṣu bhavanti ārtasya mātaraḥ
42. In private moments, these (wives) are sweet-spoken companions. In matters of dharma, they act as fathers, and to the suffering, they are like mothers.
कान्तारेष्वपि विश्रामो नरस्याध्वनिकस्य वै ।
यः सदारः स विश्वास्यस्तस्माद्दाराः परा गतिः ॥४३॥
43. kāntāreṣvapi viśrāmo narasyādhvanikasya vai ,
yaḥ sadāraḥ sa viśvāsyastasmāddārāḥ parā gatiḥ.
43. kāntāreṣu api viśrāmaḥ narasya ādhvanikasya vai
yaḥ sadāraḥ saḥ viśvāsyaḥ tasmāt dārāḥ parā gatiḥ
43. Even in the wilderness, there is rest for a traveler. Indeed, one who has a wife is trustworthy; therefore, wives are the supreme refuge.
संसरन्तमपि प्रेतं विषमेष्वेकपातिनम् ।
भार्यैवान्वेति भर्तारं सततं या पतिव्रता ॥४४॥
44. saṁsarantamapi pretaṁ viṣameṣvekapātinam ,
bhāryaivānveti bhartāraṁ satataṁ yā pativratā.
44. saṃsarantam api pretam viṣameṣu ekapātinam
bhāryā eva anveti bhartāram satatam yā pativratā
44. Even if a departed husband transmigrates and falls alone into perilous or difficult realms, only a wife who is truly devoted to her husband constantly follows him.
प्रथमं संस्थिता भार्या पतिं प्रेत्य प्रतीक्षते ।
पूर्वं मृतं च भर्तारं पश्चात्साध्व्यनुगच्छति ॥४५॥
45. prathamaṁ saṁsthitā bhāryā patiṁ pretya pratīkṣate ,
pūrvaṁ mṛtaṁ ca bhartāraṁ paścātsādhvyanugacchati.
45. prathamam saṃsthitā bhāryā patim pretya pratīkṣate
pūrvam mṛtam ca bhartāram paścāt sādhvī anugacchati
45. If the wife dies first, she waits for her husband after death. Conversely, if the husband dies first, the virtuous wife follows him afterwards.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्राजन्पाणिग्रहणमिष्यते ।
यदाप्नोति पतिर्भार्यामिह लोके परत्र च ॥४६॥
46. etasmātkāraṇādrājanpāṇigrahaṇamiṣyate ,
yadāpnoti patirbhāryāmiha loke paratra ca.
46. etasmāt kāraṇāt rājan pāṇigrahaṇam iṣyate
yat āpnoti patiḥ bhāryām iha loke paratra ca
46. For this reason, O King, marriage (literally 'taking of the hand') is desired and performed, because a husband obtains his wife's companionship in this world and in the next.
आत्मात्मनैव जनितः पुत्र इत्युच्यते बुधैः ।
तस्माद्भार्यां नरः पश्येन्मातृवत्पुत्रमातरम् ॥४७॥
47. ātmātmanaiva janitaḥ putra ityucyate budhaiḥ ,
tasmādbhāryāṁ naraḥ paśyenmātṛvatputramātaram.
47. ātmā ātmanā eva janitaḥ putraḥ iti ucyate budhaiḥ
tasmāt bhāryām naraḥ paśyet mātṛvat putramātaram
47. The wise declare that a son is indeed one's own self reborn. Therefore, a man should regard his wife, who is the mother of his son, with the same reverence as his own mother.
भार्यायां जनितं पुत्रमादर्शे स्वमिवाननम् ।
ह्लादते जनिता प्रेष्क्य स्वर्गं प्राप्येव पुण्यकृत् ॥४८॥
48. bhāryāyāṁ janitaṁ putramādarśe svamivānanam ,
hlādate janitā preṣkya svargaṁ prāpyeva puṇyakṛt.

hlādate janitā preṣkya svargam prāpya iva puṇyakṛt
48. A father delights in seeing a son born from his wife, just as one delights in seeing one's own face in a mirror, or as a virtuous person rejoices upon attaining heaven.
दह्यमाना मनोदुःखैर्व्याधिभिश्चातुरा नराः ।
ह्लादन्ते स्वेषु दारेषु घर्मार्ताः सलिलेष्विव ॥४९॥
49. dahyamānā manoduḥkhairvyādhibhiścāturā narāḥ ,
hlādante sveṣu dāreṣu gharmārtāḥ salileṣviva.
49. dahyamānāḥ mano-duḥkhaiḥ vyādhibhiḥ ca āturāḥ
narāḥ hlādante sveṣu dāreṣu gharmārtāḥ salileṣu iva
49. People, afflicted by mental sorrows and diseases, find joy in their own wives, just like those distressed by the heat find solace in water.
सुसंरब्धोऽपि रामाणां न ब्रूयादप्रियं बुधः ।
रतिं प्रीतिं च धर्मं च तास्वायत्तमवेक्ष्य च ॥५०॥
50. susaṁrabdho'pi rāmāṇāṁ na brūyādapriyaṁ budhaḥ ,
ratiṁ prītiṁ ca dharmaṁ ca tāsvāyattamavekṣya ca.
50. su-saṃrabdhaḥ api rāmāṇām na brūyāt apriyam budhaḥ
ratim prītim ca dharmam ca tāsu āyattam avekṣya ca
50. Even if very angry, a wise person should not speak harshly to women, considering that pleasure, affection, and dharma all depend on them.
आत्मनो जन्मनः क्षेत्रं पुण्यं रामाः सनातनम् ।
ऋषीणामपि का शक्तिः स्रष्टुं रामामृते प्रजाः ॥५१॥
51. ātmano janmanaḥ kṣetraṁ puṇyaṁ rāmāḥ sanātanam ,
ṛṣīṇāmapi kā śaktiḥ sraṣṭuṁ rāmāmṛte prajāḥ.
51. ātmanaḥ janmanaḥ kṣetram puṇyam rāmāḥ sanātanam
ṛṣīṇām api kā śaktiḥ sraṣṭum rāmām ṛte prajāḥ
51. Women are the sacred and eternal field for one's own birth. What power do even the sages possess to create offspring without a woman?
परिपत्य यदा सूनुर्धरणीरेणुगुण्ठितः ।
पितुराश्लिष्यतेऽङ्गानि किमिवास्त्यधिकं ततः ॥५२॥
52. paripatya yadā sūnurdharaṇīreṇuguṇṭhitaḥ ,
piturāśliṣyate'ṅgāni kimivāstyadhikaṁ tataḥ.
52. paripatya yadā sūnuḥ dharaṇī-reṇu-guṇṭhitaḥ
pituḥ āśliṣyate aṅgāni kim iva asti adhikam tataḥ
52. When a son, covered in the dust of the earth, runs and embraces his father's body, what could be more delightful than that?
स त्वं स्वयमनुप्राप्तं साभिलाषमिमं सुतम् ।
प्रेक्षमाणं च काक्षेण किमर्थमवमन्यसे ॥५३॥
53. sa tvaṁ svayamanuprāptaṁ sābhilāṣamimaṁ sutam ,
prekṣamāṇaṁ ca kākṣeṇa kimarthamavamanyase.
53. saḥ tvam svayam anuprāptam sa-abhilāṣam imam
sutam prekṣamāṇam ca kākṣeṇa kim artham avamanyase
53. Why do you, yourself, slight this son who has arrived, gazing at you with longing and eagerness?
अण्डानि बिभ्रति स्वानि न भिन्दन्ति पिपीलिकाः ।
न भरेथाः कथं नु त्वं धर्मज्ञः सन्स्वमात्मजम् ॥५४॥
54. aṇḍāni bibhrati svāni na bhindanti pipīlikāḥ ,
na bharethāḥ kathaṁ nu tvaṁ dharmajñaḥ sansvamātmajam.
54. aṇḍāni bibhrati svāni na bhindanti pipīlikāḥ na
bharethāḥ kathaṃ nu tvaṃ dharmajñaḥ san svam ātmajam
54. Ants carry their own eggs and do not break them. How then can you, who know dharma, not support your own son?
न वाससां न रामाणां नापां स्पर्शस्तथा सुखः ।
शिशोरालिङ्ग्यमानस्य स्पर्शः सूनोर्यथा सुखः ॥५५॥
55. na vāsasāṁ na rāmāṇāṁ nāpāṁ sparśastathā sukhaḥ ,
śiśorāliṅgyamānasya sparśaḥ sūnoryathā sukhaḥ.
55. na vāsasāṃ na rāmāṇāṃ na apāṃ sparśaḥ tathā sukhaḥ
śiśoḥ āliṅgyamānasya sparśaḥ sūnoḥ yathā sukhaḥ
55. The touch of clothes, or of women, or of water is not as delightful as the touch of one's own son when he is embraced.
ब्राह्मणो द्विपदां श्रेष्ठो गौर्वरिष्ठा चतुष्पदाम् ।
गुरुर्गरीयसां श्रेष्ठः पुत्रः स्पर्शवतां वरः ॥५६॥
56. brāhmaṇo dvipadāṁ śreṣṭho gaurvariṣṭhā catuṣpadām ,
gururgarīyasāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ putraḥ sparśavatāṁ varaḥ.
56. brāhmaṇaḥ dvipadāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ gauḥ variṣṭhā catuṣpadām
guruḥ garīyasāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ putraḥ sparśavatāṃ varaḥ
56. A Brahmin is the foremost among two-footed beings, a cow is the best among four-footed beings, a guru is the greatest among the venerable, and a son is the best among all things that can be touched.
स्पृशतु त्वां समाश्लिष्य पुत्रोऽयं प्रियदर्शनः ।
पुत्रस्पर्शात्सुखतरः स्पर्शो लोके न विद्यते ॥५७॥
57. spṛśatu tvāṁ samāśliṣya putro'yaṁ priyadarśanaḥ ,
putrasparśātsukhataraḥ sparśo loke na vidyate.
57. spṛśatu tvāṃ samāśliṣya putraḥ ayaṃ priyadarśanaḥ
putrasparśāt sukhataraḥ sparśaḥ loke na vidyate
57. Let this handsome son embrace and touch you. In this world, there is no touch more delightful than that of a son.
त्रिषु वर्षेषु पूर्णेषु प्रजाताहमरिंदम ।
इमं कुमारं राजेन्द्र तव शोकप्रणाशनम् ॥५८॥
58. triṣu varṣeṣu pūrṇeṣu prajātāhamariṁdama ,
imaṁ kumāraṁ rājendra tava śokapraṇāśanam.
58. triṣu varṣeṣu pūrṇeṣu prajātā aham ariṃdama
imaṃ kumāraṃ rājendra tava śokapraṇāśanam
58. O vanquisher of foes, O King of Kings, when three years were complete, I gave birth to this boy, who will destroy your sorrow.
आहर्ता वाजिमेधस्य शतसंख्यस्य पौरव ।
इति वागन्तरिक्षे मां सूतकेऽभ्यवदत्पुरा ॥५९॥
59. āhartā vājimedhasya śatasaṁkhyasya paurava ,
iti vāgantarikṣe māṁ sūtake'bhyavadatpurā.
59. āhartā vājimedhasya śatasaṃkhyasya paurava
iti vāk antarikṣe mām sūtake abhyavadat purā
59. O descendant of Puru, a voice from the sky addressed me in the past, at the time of my birth, saying, 'You shall be the performer of a hundred Vājīmedha (horse) sacrifices.'
ननु नामाङ्कमारोप्य स्नेहाद्ग्रामान्तरं गताः ।
मूर्ध्नि पुत्रानुपाघ्राय प्रतिनन्दन्ति मानवाः ॥६०॥
60. nanu nāmāṅkamāropya snehādgrāmāntaraṁ gatāḥ ,
mūrdhni putrānupāghrāya pratinandanti mānavāḥ.
60. nanu nāma aṅkam āropya snehāt grāmāntaram gatāḥ
mūrdhni putrān upāghrāya pratinandanti mānavāḥ
60. Indeed, when people return from another village, they affectionately place their children on their lap, and, kissing their sons on the head, they welcome them with joy.
वेदेष्वपि वदन्तीमं मन्त्रवादं द्विजातयः ।
जातकर्मणि पुत्राणां तवापि विदितं तथा ॥६१॥
61. vedeṣvapi vadantīmaṁ mantravādaṁ dvijātayaḥ ,
jātakarmaṇi putrāṇāṁ tavāpi viditaṁ tathā.
61. vedeṣu api vadanti imam mantravādam dvijātayaḥ
jātakarmani putrāṇām tava api viditam tathā
61. Even in the Vedas, the twice-born (Brahmins) recite this mantra's teaching during the Jātakarman (birth ceremony) for sons. This is also known to you.
अङ्गादङ्गात्संभवसि हृदयादभिजायसे ।
आत्मा वै पुत्रनामासि स जीव शरदः शतम् ॥६२॥
62. aṅgādaṅgātsaṁbhavasi hṛdayādabhijāyase ,
ātmā vai putranāmāsi sa jīva śaradaḥ śatam.
62. aṅgāt aṅgāt saṃbhavasi hṛdayāt abhijāyase
ātmā vai putranāmā asi saḥ jīva śaradaḥ śatam
62. From limb to limb you are born; from my heart you arise. You are truly my self, named 'son.' May that self live for a hundred years.
पोषो हि त्वदधीनो मे संतानमपि चाक्षयम् ।
तस्मात्त्वं जीव मे वत्स सुसुखी शरदां शतम् ॥६३॥
63. poṣo hi tvadadhīno me saṁtānamapi cākṣayam ,
tasmāttvaṁ jīva me vatsa susukhī śaradāṁ śatam.
63. poṣaḥ hi tvadadhīnaḥ me saṃtānam api ca akṣayam
tasmāt tvam jīva me vatsa susukhī śaradām śatam
63. Indeed, my well-being is dependent on you, and my lineage is also imperishable. Therefore, O my dear child, may you live very happily for a hundred years.
त्वदङ्गेभ्यः प्रसूतोऽयं पुरुषात्पुरुषोऽपरः ।
सरसीवामलेऽऽत्मानं द्वितीयं पश्य मे सुतम् ॥६४॥
64. tvadaṅgebhyaḥ prasūto'yaṁ puruṣātpuruṣo'paraḥ ,
sarasīvāmale''tmānaṁ dvitīyaṁ paśya me sutam.
64. tvadaṅgebhyaḥ prasūtaḥ ayam puruṣāt puruṣaḥ aparaḥ
sarasī iva amale ātmānaṃ dvitīyaṃ paśya me sutam
64. This other being, born from your limbs – indeed, another being from you – is my son. Behold him as your second self, just as one sees an image reflected in a clear lake.
यथा ह्याहवनीयोऽग्निर्गार्हपत्यात्प्रणीयते ।
तथा त्वत्तः प्रसूतोऽयं त्वमेकः सन्द्विधा कृतः ॥६५॥
65. yathā hyāhavanīyo'gnirgārhapatyātpraṇīyate ,
tathā tvattaḥ prasūto'yaṁ tvamekaḥ sandvidhā kṛtaḥ.
65. yathā hi āhavanīyaḥ agniḥ gārhapatyāt praṇīyate tathā
tvattaḥ prasūtaḥ ayam tvam ekaḥ san dvidhā kṛtaḥ
65. Indeed, just as the Ahavaniya fire is brought forth from the Garhapatya fire, so too, this one born from you is you, the single one, having been made into two.
मृगापकृष्टेन हि ते मृगयां परिधावता ।
अहमासादिता राजन्कुमारी पितुराश्रमे ॥६६॥
66. mṛgāpakṛṣṭena hi te mṛgayāṁ paridhāvatā ,
ahamāsāditā rājankumārī piturāśrame.
66. mṛgāpakṛṣṭena hi te mṛgayāṃ paridhāvatā
aham āsāditā rājan kumārī pituḥ āśrame
66. Indeed, by you, drawn away by a deer and running about for the hunt, I was found, O king, a maiden in my father's hermitage.
उर्वशी पूर्वचित्तिश्च सहजन्या च मेनका ।
विश्वाची च घृताची च षडेवाप्सरसां वराः ॥६७॥
67. urvaśī pūrvacittiśca sahajanyā ca menakā ,
viśvācī ca ghṛtācī ca ṣaḍevāpsarasāṁ varāḥ.
67. urvaśī pūrvacittiḥ ca sahajanyā ca menakā
viśvācī ca ghṛtācī ca ṣaṭ eva apsarasām varāḥ
67. Urvashi, Purvachitti, Sahajanya, and Menaka, Vishwachi and Ghritachi - these are indeed the six most excellent among Apsaras.
तासां मां मेनका नाम ब्रह्मयोनिर्वराप्सराः ।
दिवः संप्राप्य जगतीं विश्वामित्रादजीजनत् ॥६८॥
68. tāsāṁ māṁ menakā nāma brahmayonirvarāpsarāḥ ,
divaḥ saṁprāpya jagatīṁ viśvāmitrādajījanat.
68. tāsām mām menakā nāma brahmayoniḥ varāpsarāḥ
divaḥ samprāpya jagatīṃ viśvāmitrāt ajījanat
68. Among those Apsaras, it was Menaka, an excellent Apsara of divine origin, who, having come down from heaven to earth, gave birth to me from Vishwamitra.
सा मां हिमवतः पृष्ठे सुषुवे मेनकाप्सराः ।
अवकीर्य च मां याता परात्मजमिवासती ॥६९॥
69. sā māṁ himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe suṣuve menakāpsarāḥ ,
avakīrya ca māṁ yātā parātmajamivāsatī.
69. sā mām himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe suṣuve menakāpsarāḥ
avakīrya ca mām yātā parātmajam iva asatī
69. The apsara Menaka gave birth to me on the peak of the Himalayas. She then abandoned me and departed, just like an unchaste woman abandoning a child not her own.
किं नु कर्माशुभं पूर्वं कृतवत्यस्मि जन्मनि ।
यदहं बान्धवैस्त्यक्ता बाल्ये संप्रति च त्वया ॥७०॥
70. kiṁ nu karmāśubhaṁ pūrvaṁ kṛtavatyasmi janmani ,
yadahaṁ bāndhavaistyaktā bālye saṁprati ca tvayā.
70. kim nu karma aśubham pūrvam kṛtavatī asmi janmani
yat aham bāndhavaiḥ tyaktā bālye samprati ca tvayā
70. What inauspicious karma did I perform in a previous birth, that I have been abandoned by my relatives in childhood, and now, by you?
कामं त्वया परित्यक्ता गमिष्याम्यहमाश्रमम् ।
इमं तु बालं संत्यक्तुं नार्हस्यात्मजमात्मना ॥७१॥
71. kāmaṁ tvayā parityaktā gamiṣyāmyahamāśramam ,
imaṁ tu bālaṁ saṁtyaktuṁ nārhasyātmajamātmanā.
71. kāmam tvayā parityaktā gamiṣyāmi aham āśramam
imam tu bālam saṃtyaktum na arhasi ātmajam ātmanā
71. Indeed, though abandoned by you, I will go to an āśrama. However, you should not abandon this child, your own son, by yourself.
दुःषन्त उवाच ।
न पुत्रमभिजानामि त्वयि जातं शकुन्तले ।
असत्यवचना नार्यः कस्ते श्रद्धास्यते वचः ॥७२॥
72. duḥṣanta uvāca ,
na putramabhijānāmi tvayi jātaṁ śakuntale ,
asatyavacanā nāryaḥ kaste śraddhāsyate vacaḥ.
72. duḥṣanta uvāca na putram abhijānāmi tvayi jātam
śakuntale asatyavacanā nāryaḥ kaḥ te śraddhāsyate vacaḥ
72. Duṣyanta said: 'Shakuntala, I do not recognize any son born of you. Women are prone to untruthful speech; who will believe your words?'
मेनका निरनुक्रोशा बन्धकी जननी तव ।
यया हिमवतः पृष्ठे निर्माल्येव प्रवेरिता ॥७३॥
73. menakā niranukrośā bandhakī jananī tava ,
yayā himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe nirmālyeva praveritā.

73. Menaka, your mother, is heartless and a harlot. By her, you were cast away on the peak of the Himalayas like a discarded offering.
स चापि निरनुक्रोशः क्षत्रयोनिः पिता तव ।
विश्वामित्रो ब्राह्मणत्वे लुब्धः कामपरायणः ॥७४॥
74. sa cāpi niranukrośaḥ kṣatrayoniḥ pitā tava ,
viśvāmitro brāhmaṇatve lubdhaḥ kāmaparāyaṇaḥ.
74. saḥ ca api niranukrośaḥ kṣatrayoniḥ pitā tava
viśvāmitraḥ brāhmaṇatve lubdhaḥ kāmaparāyaṇaḥ
74. And that father of yours, Viśvāmitra, was merciless, born of a Kṣatriya lineage, greedy for Brahminhood, and completely given over to sensual desires.
मेनकाप्सरसां श्रेष्ठा महर्षीणां च ते पिता ।
तयोरपत्यं कस्मात्त्वं पुंश्चलीवाभिधास्यसि ॥७५॥
75. menakāpsarasāṁ śreṣṭhā maharṣīṇāṁ ca te pitā ,
tayorapatyaṁ kasmāttvaṁ puṁścalīvābhidhāsyasi.
75. menakā apsarasām śreṣṭhā maharṣīṇām ca te pitā
tayoḥ apatyam kasmāt tvam puṃścalī iva abhidhāsyasi
75. Menaka, the foremost among apsarases, and your father, the greatest among sages – why do you declare yourself to be the child of those two like a common harlot?
अश्रद्धेयमिदं वाक्यं कथयन्ती न लज्जसे ।
विशेषतो मत्सकाशे दुष्टतापसि गम्यताम् ॥७६॥
76. aśraddheyamidaṁ vākyaṁ kathayantī na lajjase ,
viśeṣato matsakāśe duṣṭatāpasi gamyatām.

76. Are you not ashamed to utter such an unbelievable statement, especially in my presence? O wicked female ascetic, just go away!
क्व महर्षिः सदैवोग्रः साप्सरा क्व च मेनका ।
क्व च त्वमेवं कृपणा तापसीवेषधारिणी ॥७७॥
77. kva maharṣiḥ sadaivograḥ sāpsarā kva ca menakā ,
kva ca tvamevaṁ kṛpaṇā tāpasīveṣadhāriṇī.
77. kva maharṣiḥ sadā eva ugraḥ sa apsarā kva ca
menakā kva ca tvam evam kṛpaṇā tāpasīveṣadhāriṇī
77. Where is that great sage, always so fierce? And where is that Apsaras Menaka? And where are you, so wretched, clad in the garb of an ascetic?
अतिकायश्च पुत्रस्ते बालोऽपि बलवानयम् ।
कथमल्पेन कालेन शालस्कन्ध इवोद्गतः ॥७८॥
78. atikāyaśca putraste bālo'pi balavānayam ,
kathamalpena kālena śālaskandha ivodgataḥ.
78. atikāyaḥ ca putraḥ te bālaḥ api balavān ayam
katham alpena kālena śālaskandhaḥ iva udgataḥ
78. And this son of yours, Atikāya, though still a child, is powerful. How has he grown up like a strong śāla tree trunk in such a short time?
सुनिकृष्टा च योनिस्ते पुंश्चली प्रतिभासि मे ।
यदृच्छया कामरागाज्जाता मेनकया ह्यसि ॥७९॥
79. sunikṛṣṭā ca yoniste puṁścalī pratibhāsi me ,
yadṛcchayā kāmarāgājjātā menakayā hyasi.
79. sunikṛṣṭā ca yoniḥ te puṃścalī pratibhāsi me
yadṛcchayā kāmarāgāt jātā menakayā hi asi
79. Your origin is very low, and you appear to me as a harlot. Indeed, you were born by Menaka out of lustful desire, purely by chance.
सर्वमेतत्परोक्षं मे यत्त्वं वदसि तापसि ।
नाहं त्वामभिजानामि यथेष्टं गम्यतां त्वया ॥८०॥
80. sarvametatparokṣaṁ me yattvaṁ vadasi tāpasi ,
nāhaṁ tvāmabhijānāmi yatheṣṭaṁ gamyatāṁ tvayā.
80. sarvam etat parokṣam me yat tvam vadasi tāpasi
na aham tvām abhijānāmi yatheṣṭam gamyatām tvayā
80. O ascetic woman, all that you say is unknown to me. I do not recognize you. You may go wherever you wish.
