वैशंपायन उवाच ।
हते चित्राङ्गदे भीष्मो बाले भ्रातरि चानघ ।
पालयामास तद्राज्यं सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः ॥१॥

1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,

Vaishampayana said: "O sinless one, after his young brother Chitrangada was killed, Bhishma protected that kingdom, abiding by Satyavati's counsel."
संप्राप्तयौवनं पश्यन्भ्रातरं धीमतां वरम् ।
भीष्मो विचित्रवीर्यस्य विवाहायाकरोन्मतिम् ॥२॥

2. saṁprāptayauvanaṁ paśyanbhrātaraṁ dhīmatāṁ varam ,

Seeing his brother Vichitravirya, who had attained youth and was the best among the intelligent, Bhishma formed a plan for his marriage.
अथ काशिपतेर्भीष्मः कन्यास्तिस्रोऽप्सरःसमाः ।
शुश्राव सहिता राजन्वृण्वतीर्वै स्वयं वरम् ॥३॥

3. atha kāśipaterbhīṣmaḥ kanyāstisro'psaraḥsamāḥ ,

Then, O King, Bhishma heard that the king of Kashi had three daughters, as beautiful as Apsaras, who were assembled there to choose their husbands in a svayamvara.
ततः स रथिनां श्रेष्ठो रथेनैकेन वर्मभृत् ।
जगामानुमते मातुः पुरीं वाराणसीं प्रति ॥४॥

4. tataḥ sa rathināṁ śreṣṭho rathenaikena varmabhṛt ,

Then he, the best among charioteers, wearing armor, went with a single chariot, with his mother's permission, towards the city of Varanasi.
तत्र राज्ञः समुदितान्सर्वतः समुपागतान् ।
ददर्श कन्यास्ताश्चैव भीष्मः शंतनुनन्दनः ॥५॥

5. tatra rājñaḥ samuditānsarvataḥ samupāgatān ,

There, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, saw the kings who had assembled and arrived from all sides, and indeed, he also saw the maidens.
कीर्त्यमानेषु राज्ञां तु नामस्वथ सहस्रशः ।
भीष्मः स्वयं तदा राजन्वरयामास ताः प्रभुः ॥६॥

6. kīrtyamāneṣu rājñāṁ tu nāmasvatha sahasraśaḥ ,
bhīṣmaḥ svayaṁ tadā rājanvarayāmāsa tāḥ prabhuḥ.

kīrtyamāneṣu rājñāṃ tu nāmasu atha sahasraśaḥ

Indeed, while the names of thousands of kings were being recited, O King, Bhishma himself, the powerful one, then chose those maidens.
उवाच च महीपालान्राजञ्जलदनिःस्वनः ।
रथमारोप्य ताः कन्या भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः ॥७॥

And, O King, Bhishma, the best of warriors, with a voice like the rumble of a thundercloud, made those maidens ascend a chariot and then addressed the kings.
आहूय दानं कन्यानां गुणवद्भ्यः स्मृतं बुधैः ।
अलंकृत्य यथाशक्ति प्रदाय च धनान्यपि ॥८॥

8. āhūya dānaṁ kanyānāṁ guṇavadbhyaḥ smṛtaṁ budhaiḥ ,
alaṁkṛtya yathāśakti pradāya ca dhanānyapi.

The wise declare that the gift of maidens to men of good qualities is (to be made) after inviting (the grooms), adorning (the maidens) according to one's capacity, and also giving wealth.
प्रयच्छन्त्यपरे कन्यां मिथुनेन गवामपि ।
वित्तेन कथितेनान्ये बलेनान्येऽनुमान्य च ॥९॥

9. prayacchantyapare kanyāṁ mithunena gavāmapi ,
vittena kathitenānye balenānye'numānya ca.

Other people give a maiden with a pair of cows; others (give her) with stipulated wealth; and others (take her) by force; and (still others by) obtaining consent.
प्रमत्तामुपयान्त्यन्ये स्वयमन्ये च विन्दते ।
अष्टमं तमथो वित्त विवाहं कविभिः स्मृतम् ॥१०॥

10. pramattāmupayāntyanye svayamanye ca vindate ,
aṣṭamaṁ tamatho vitta vivāhaṁ kavibhiḥ smṛtam.

pramattām upayānti anye svayam anye ca vindate
aṣṭamam tam atho vitta vivāham kavibhiḥ smṛtam

Some obtain a girl who is carried away by passion, while others procure her for themselves. Understand that this is declared by the wise as the eighth type of marriage.
स्वयंवरं तु राजन्याः प्रशंसन्त्युपयान्ति च ।
प्रमथ्य तु हृतामाहुर्ज्यायसीं धर्मवादिनः ॥११॥

11. svayaṁvaraṁ tu rājanyāḥ praśaṁsantyupayānti ca ,
pramathya tu hṛtāmāhurjyāyasīṁ dharmavādinaḥ.

svayaṃvaram tu rājanyāḥ praśaṃsanti upayānti ca
pramathya tu hṛtām āhuḥ jyāyasīm dharmavādinaḥ

However, royalty praises and obtains (a bride through) svayaṃvara. But those who uphold dharma declare a bride carried off after overcoming (her kin) to be superior.
ता इमाः पृथिवीपाला जिहीर्षामि बलादितः ।
ते यतध्वं परं शक्त्या विजयायेतराय वा ।
स्थितोऽहं पृथिवीपाला युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥१२॥
ते यतध्वं परं शक्त्या विजयायेतराय वा ।
स्थितोऽहं पृथिवीपाला युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥१२॥
12. tā imāḥ pṛthivīpālā jihīrṣāmi balāditaḥ ,
te yatadhvaṁ paraṁ śaktyā vijayāyetarāya vā ,
sthito'haṁ pṛthivīpālā yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ.
te yatadhvaṁ paraṁ śaktyā vijayāyetarāya vā ,
sthito'haṁ pṛthivīpālā yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ.

tāḥ imāḥ pṛthivīpālāḥ jihīrṣāmi
balāt itaḥ te yatadhvam param śaktyā
vijayāya itarāya vā sthitaḥ aham
pṛthivīpālāḥ yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ
balāt itaḥ te yatadhvam param śaktyā
vijayāya itarāya vā sthitaḥ aham
pṛthivīpālāḥ yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ

O protectors of the earth, I intend to carry off these (maidens) by force right here. You all exert yourselves with your utmost strength, whether for victory or for the alternative (defeat). O kings, I stand here, resolute for battle.
एवमुक्त्वा महीपालान्काशिराजं च वीर्यवान् ।
सर्वाः कन्याः स कौरव्यो रथमारोपयत्स्वकम् ।
आमन्त्र्य च स तान्प्रायाच्छीघ्रं कन्याः प्रगृह्य ताः ॥१३॥
सर्वाः कन्याः स कौरव्यो रथमारोपयत्स्वकम् ।
आमन्त्र्य च स तान्प्रायाच्छीघ्रं कन्याः प्रगृह्य ताः ॥१३॥
13. evamuktvā mahīpālānkāśirājaṁ ca vīryavān ,
sarvāḥ kanyāḥ sa kauravyo rathamāropayatsvakam ,
āmantrya ca sa tānprāyācchīghraṁ kanyāḥ pragṛhya tāḥ.
sarvāḥ kanyāḥ sa kauravyo rathamāropayatsvakam ,
āmantrya ca sa tānprāyācchīghraṁ kanyāḥ pragṛhya tāḥ.

evam uktvā mahīpālān kāśirājam ca
vīryavān sarvāḥ kanyāḥ sa kauravyaḥ
ratham āropayat svakam āmantrya ca sa
tān prāyāt śīghram kanyāḥ pragṛhya tāḥ
vīryavān sarvāḥ kanyāḥ sa kauravyaḥ
ratham āropayat svakam āmantrya ca sa
tān prāyāt śīghram kanyāḥ pragṛhya tāḥ

Having thus addressed the kings and the King of Kashi, the mighty Kuru scion made all the maidens mount his own chariot. And bidding farewell to those (kings), he quickly departed, taking those maidens with him.
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे समुत्पेतुरमर्षिताः ।
संस्पृशन्तः स्वकान्बाहून्दशन्तो दशनच्छदान् ॥१४॥

14. tataste pārthivāḥ sarve samutpeturamarṣitāḥ ,

Thereupon, all those indignant kings sprang up, touching their own arms and biting their lips (in rage).
तेषामाभरणान्याशु त्वरितानां विमुञ्चताम् ।
आमुञ्चतां च वर्माणि संभ्रमः सुमहानभूत् ॥१५॥

15. teṣāmābharaṇānyāśu tvaritānāṁ vimuñcatām ,
āmuñcatāṁ ca varmāṇi saṁbhramaḥ sumahānabhūt.

A great commotion arose among them as they hurriedly cast off their ornaments and quickly donned their armors.
ताराणामिव संपातो बभूव जनमेजय ।
भूषणानां च शुभ्राणां कवचानां च सर्वशः ॥१६॥
भूषणानां च शुभ्राणां कवचानां च सर्वशः ॥१६॥
16. tārāṇāmiva saṁpāto babhūva janamejaya ,
bhūṣaṇānāṁ ca śubhrāṇāṁ kavacānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.

16.
tārāṇām iva saṃpātaḥ babhūva janamejaya
bhūṣaṇānām ca śubhrāṇām kavacānām ca sarvaśaḥ
bhūṣaṇānām ca śubhrāṇām kavacānām ca sarvaśaḥ

O Janamejaya, there was a scattering everywhere, like falling stars, of bright ornaments and armors.
सवर्मभिर्भूषणैस्ते द्राग्भ्राजद्भिरितस्ततः ।
सक्रोधामर्षजिह्मभ्रूसकषायदृशस्तथा ॥१७॥

17. savarmabhirbhūṣaṇaiste drāgbhrājadbhiritastataḥ ,
sakrodhāmarṣajihmabhrūsakaṣāyadṛśastathā.

savarmabhiḥ bhūṣaṇaiḥ te drāk bhrājadbhiḥ itas
tataḥ sakrodhāmaraṣajihmabhrū sakaṣāyadṛśaḥ tathā
tataḥ sakrodhāmaraṣajihmabhrū sakaṣāyadṛśaḥ tathā
17.
Thus, they, with their quickly donned shining armors and glinting ornaments appearing here and there, had eyebrows crooked from anger and indignation, and their eyes were reddened.
सूतोपकॢप्तान्रुचिरान्सदश्वोद्यतधूर्गतान् ।
रथानास्थाय ते वीराः सर्वप्रहरणान्विताः ।
प्रयान्तमेकं कौरव्यमनुसस्रुरुदायुधाः ॥१८॥
रथानास्थाय ते वीराः सर्वप्रहरणान्विताः ।
प्रयान्तमेकं कौरव्यमनुसस्रुरुदायुधाः ॥१८॥
18. sūtopakḷptānrucirānsadaśvodyatadhūrgatān ,
rathānāsthāya te vīrāḥ sarvapraharaṇānvitāḥ ,
prayāntamekaṁ kauravyamanusasrurudāyudhāḥ.
rathānāsthāya te vīrāḥ sarvapraharaṇānvitāḥ ,
prayāntamekaṁ kauravyamanusasrurudāyudhāḥ.

sūtopakḷptān rucirān sadaśvodyatadhūrgatān
rathān āsthāya te vīrāḥ
sarvapraharaṇānvitāḥ prayāntam
ekam kauravyam anusasruḥ udāyudhāḥ
rathān āsthāya te vīrāḥ
sarvapraharaṇānvitāḥ prayāntam
ekam kauravyam anusasruḥ udāyudhāḥ
18.
Those heroes, fully armed, mounted splendid chariots that were prepared by charioteers and drawn by excellent horses yoked to the pole. With weapons raised, they followed the one Kuru prince who was proceeding forward.
ततः समभवद्युद्धं तेषां तस्य च भारत ।
एकस्य च बहूनां च तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ॥१९॥

19. tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ teṣāṁ tasya ca bhārata ,
ekasya ca bahūnāṁ ca tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam.

tataḥ samabhavat yuddham teṣām tasya ca bhārata

Then, O Bharata, a fierce and hair-raising battle ensued between them and him, between the one (Kuru prince) and the many (warriors).
ते त्विषून्दशसाहस्रांस्तस्मै युगपदाक्षिपन् ।
अप्राप्तांश्चैव तानाशु भीष्मः सर्वांस्तदाच्छिनत् ॥२०॥
अप्राप्तांश्चैव तानाशु भीष्मः सर्वांस्तदाच्छिनत् ॥२०॥
20. te tviṣūndaśasāhasrāṁstasmai yugapadākṣipan ,
aprāptāṁścaiva tānāśu bhīṣmaḥ sarvāṁstadācchinat.

te tu iṣūn daśa-sāhasrān tasmai yugapat ākṣipan
aprāptān ca eva tān āśu bhīṣmaḥ sarvān tadā acchinat
aprāptān ca eva tān āśu bhīṣmaḥ sarvān tadā acchinat

They simultaneously hurled ten thousand arrows at him. But Bhishma quickly intercepted and cut off all of them before they could even reach him.
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे सर्वतः परिवारयन् ।
ववर्षुः शरवर्षेण वर्षेणेवाद्रिमम्बुदाः ॥२१॥

21. tataste pārthivāḥ sarve sarvataḥ parivārayan ,
vavarṣuḥ śaravarṣeṇa varṣeṇevādrimambudāḥ.

tataḥ te pārthivāḥ sarve sarvataḥ parivārayan
vavarṣuḥ śaravarṣeṇa varṣeṇa iva adrim ambudāḥ
vavarṣuḥ śaravarṣeṇa varṣeṇa iva adrim ambudāḥ

Then all those kings surrounded him from all sides and showered him with volleys of arrows, just as clouds shower a mountain with rain.
स तद्बाणमयं वर्षं शरैरावार्य सर्वतः ।
ततः सर्वान्महीपालान्प्रत्यविध्यत्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः ॥२२॥

22. sa tadbāṇamayaṁ varṣaṁ śarairāvārya sarvataḥ ,
tataḥ sarvānmahīpālānpratyavidhyattribhistribhiḥ.
tataḥ sarvānmahīpālānpratyavidhyattribhistribhiḥ.

saḥ tat bāṇamayam varṣam śaraiḥ āvārya sarvataḥ
tataḥ sarvān mahīpālān pratyavidhyat tribhiḥ tribhiḥ
tataḥ sarvān mahīpālān pratyavidhyat tribhiḥ tribhiḥ

Having warded off that shower of arrows from all sides with his own arrows, he then struck each of all those kings with three arrows.
तस्याति पुरुषानन्याँल्लाघवं रथचारिणः ।
रक्षणं चात्मनः संख्ये शत्रवोऽप्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥२३॥
रक्षणं चात्मनः संख्ये शत्रवोऽप्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥२३॥
23. tasyāti puruṣānanyāँllāghavaṁ rathacāriṇaḥ ,
rakṣaṇaṁ cātmanaḥ saṁkhye śatravo'pyabhyapūjayan.
rakṣaṇaṁ cātmanaḥ saṁkhye śatravo'pyabhyapūjayan.
23.
tasya ati-puruṣān anyān lāghavam rathacāriṇaḥ
rakṣaṇam ca ātmanaḥ saṃkhye śatravaḥ api abhyapūjayan
rakṣaṇam ca ātmanaḥ saṃkhye śatravaḥ api abhyapūjayan

Even his enemies praised his superhuman swiftness as a chariot-rider and his self-protection in battle.
तान्विनिर्जित्य तु रणे सर्वशस्त्रविशारदः ।
कन्याभिः सहितः प्रायाद्भारतो भारतान्प्रति ॥२४॥

24. tānvinirjitya tu raṇe sarvaśastraviśāradaḥ ,
kanyābhiḥ sahitaḥ prāyādbhārato bhāratānprati.

tān vinirjitya tu raṇe sarva-śastra-viśāradaḥ
kanyābhiḥ sahitaḥ prāyāt bhārataḥ bhāratān prati

Having indeed completely conquered them in battle, the descendant of Bharata, expert in all weapons, proceeded along with the maidens towards the Bharatas.
ततस्तं पृष्ठतो राजञ्शाल्वराजो महारथः ।
अभ्याहनदमेयात्मा भीष्मं शांतनवं रणे ॥२५॥

25. tatastaṁ pṛṣṭhato rājañśālvarājo mahārathaḥ ,

Then, O king, the formidable King of Salva, a great charioteer, attacked Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, from behind in battle.

Just as another elephant, the best among the powerful leaders of the herd, having pursued a female elephant in heat, strikes her on the hindquarters with its tusks.

"O woman-lover, stop, stop!" thus spoke that king, the mighty-armed King of Salva, impelled by indignation, to Bhishma.

तद्वाक्याकुलितः क्रोधाद्विधूमोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥२८॥

Then that Bhishma, a tiger among men, the crusher of enemy forces, agitated by his words and blazing with anger like a smokeless fire, ...

Having adopted the kṣatriya dharma, free from fear and confusion, that great charioteer (Bhishma) turned his chariot towards Salva.

Having seen him (Bhishma) turning back, all those kings became spectators in the encounter between Bhishma and Shalva.

Those two, mighty and possessing great strength and valor, roaring like two bulls amidst their battle cries, advanced towards each other.

Then, King Shalva, that best among men, showered Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with hundreds of thousands of swift-flying arrows.

विस्मिताः समपद्यन्त साधु साध्विति चाब्रुवन् ॥३३॥

Having seen Bhishma, who had been hard-pressed by Shalva, those kings were astonished and exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
लाघवं तस्य ते दृष्ट्वा संयुगे सर्वपार्थिवाः ।
अपूजयन्त संहृष्टा वाग्भिः शाल्वं नराधिपाः ॥३४॥

Having witnessed his (Shalva's) agility in battle, all those delighted kings, the lords of men, praised Shalva with words.
क्षत्रियाणां तदा वाचः श्रुत्वा परपुरंजयः ।
क्रुद्धः शांतनवो भीष्मस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेत्यभाषत ॥३५॥

Then, having heard the words of the kshatriyas, Bhishma, the enraged son of Shantanu and conqueror of enemy cities, declared, "Stop! Stop!"
सारथिं चाब्रवीत्क्रुद्धो याहि यत्रैष पार्थिवः ।
यावदेनं निहन्म्यद्य भुजंगमिव पक्षिराट् ॥३६॥

Enraged, he also told his charioteer, "Go to where this king is, so that I may kill him today, just as the king of birds [Garuda] kills a snake."

Then Bhishma, the Kuru warrior, properly invoked the Vāruṇa weapon (the water missile). By it, O king of men, he crushed the four horses of King Salva.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य शाल्वराज्ञः स कौरवः ।
भीष्मो नृपतिशार्दूल न्यवधीत्तस्य सारथिम् ।
अस्त्रेण चाप्यथैकेन न्यवधीत्तुरगोत्तमान् ॥३८॥

O tiger among kings, Bhishma, that Kuru warrior, having countered the weapons of King Salva with his own missiles, killed Salva's charioteer. Then, with just one weapon, he also killed Salva's excellent horses.
कन्याहेतोर्नरश्रेष्ठ भीष्मः शांतनवस्तदा ।
जित्वा विसर्जयामास जीवन्तं नृपसत्तमम् ।
ततः शाल्वः स्वनगरं प्रययौ भरतर्षभ ॥३९॥

O best of men, then Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, having defeated that excellent king (Salva) for the sake of the maiden, released him alive. After that, O bull among Bharatas, Salva departed to his own city.

O conqueror of enemy cities, even those kings who were present there, eager to witness the svayaṃvara, returned to their own kingdoms.
एवं विजित्य ताः कन्या भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः ।
प्रययौ हास्तिनपुरं यत्र राजा स कौरवः ॥४१॥

Thus, having won those maidens, Bhishma, the foremost among warriors, proceeded to Hastinapura, where the Kuru king resided.

O lord of men, he (Bhishma) swiftly crossed forests, rivers, and mountains adorned with diverse trees.

Uninjured, having vanquished his foes in battle, he of immeasurable valor, the son of Ganga (Bhishma), brought the daughters of the King of Kashi.

That righteous-souled Bhishma, having received them as daughters-in-law, as younger sisters, and as daughters, proceeded to the Kurus.

Bhishma, the brother, gave all those virtuous women, seized by his valor, to his younger brother, Vichitravirya.
सतां धर्मेण धर्मज्ञः कृत्वा कर्मातिमानुषम् ।
भ्रातुर्विचित्रवीर्यस्य विवाहायोपचक्रमे ।
सत्यवत्या सह मिथः कृत्वा निश्चयमात्मवान् ॥४६॥

The resolute Bhishma, a knower of dharma, having performed that superhuman feat for the sake of the good, secretly made a decision with Satyavati and then began the arrangements for his brother Vichitravirya's marriage.
विवाहं कारयिष्यन्तं भीष्मं काशिपतेः सुता ।
ज्येष्ठा तासामिदं वाक्यमब्रवीद्ध सती तदा ॥४७॥

Then, when Bhishma was about to arrange the marriage, the eldest of those daughters, the daughter of the king of Kashi, that virtuous lady, spoke these words to him.
मया सौभपतिः पूर्वं मनसाभिवृतः पतिः ।
तेन चास्मि वृता पूर्वमेष कामश्च मे पितुः ॥४८॥

By me, the lord of Saubha was previously chosen in my mind as a husband. And previously, I was chosen by him. This is also my father's desire.

एतद्विज्ञाय धर्मज्ञ ततस्त्वं धर्ममाचर ॥४९॥

Salva was to be chosen by me in that svayaṃvara. Therefore, O knower of dharma, having understood this, you should act righteously.

Thus addressed by that maiden in the assembly of Brahmins, the heroic Bhishma became filled with anxiety appropriate to his own previous action.

Having deliberated with the Brahmins who were expert in the Vedas, he, the knower of dharma, then permitted Ambā, the eldest daughter of the king of Kāśi, (to leave).

Bhishma gave Ambikā and Ambālikā as wives to his younger brother Vichitravirya, performing the ritual according to the prescribed rules.

Having taken their hands, Vichitravirya, proud of his beauty and youth, though by nature righteous (dharmātmā), became immersed in sensual desires (kāmātmā).

And they were tall, dark-complexioned, with dark and curly hair, endowed with prominent red nails, and possessed of plump hips and breasts.

When it was thus established that this (Vichitravirya) had been obtained as a husband, a fitting counterpart to their selves, those two (princesses) indeed honored the auspicious Vichitravirya.

And he, who resembled the Ashvins in form and possessed the valor of gods, became one who captivated the minds of all women.

The young King Vichitravirya, while living with those two (queens) for seven years, contracted consumption.

Despite his friends and trusted physicians striving (to save him), the Kaurava (Vichitravirya) went to Yama's abode, just like the setting sun.

Bhishma, acting in accordance with the wishes of Satyavati and accompanied by all the priests and the chief Kuru elders, properly performed all the funeral rites for King Vichitravirya.
