वैशंपायन उवाच ।
व्युषितायां रजन्यां तु राजा दुर्योधनस्ततः ।
व्यभजत्तान्यनीकानि दश चैकं च भारत ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: But when the night had elapsed, King Duryodhana then divided those armies - ten and one, O Bhārata.
नरहस्तिरथाश्वानां सारं मध्यं च फल्गु च ।
सर्वेष्वेतेष्वनीकेषु संदिदेश महीपतिः ॥२॥
2. narahastirathāśvānāṁ sāraṁ madhyaṁ ca phalgu ca ,
sarveṣveteṣvanīkeṣu saṁdideśa mahīpatiḥ.

2. The king assigned the excellent, mediocre, and inferior (quality troops) of men, elephants, chariots, and horses to all these army divisions.
सानुकर्षाः सतूणीराः सवरूथाः सतोमराः ।
सोपासङ्गाः सशक्तीकाः सनिषङ्गाः सपोथिकाः ॥३॥
3. sānukarṣāḥ satūṇīrāḥ savarūthāḥ satomarāḥ ,

3. The divisions were equipped with chariot rear-platforms, with quivers, with chariot-defenses, with spears; with sword-belts, with javelins, with quivers, and with supply-bundles.
सध्वजाः सपताकाश्च सशरासनतोमराः ।
रज्जुभिश्च विचित्राभिः सपाशाः सपरिस्तराः ॥४॥
4. sadhvajāḥ sapatākāśca saśarāsanatomarāḥ ,
rajjubhiśca vicitrābhiḥ sapāśāḥ saparistarāḥ.

4. They were also equipped with banners and flags, with bows and spears; and with various ropes, with nooses, and with coverings.
सकचग्रहविक्षेपाः सतैलगुडवालुकाः ।
साशीविषघटाः सर्वे ससर्जरसपांसवः ॥५॥
5. sakacagrahavikṣepāḥ satailaguḍavālukāḥ ,
sāśīviṣaghaṭāḥ sarve sasarjarasapāṁsavaḥ.

5. All of them were equipped with entangling projectiles, with oil, jaggery, and sand, with pots of venomous snakes, and with dust mixed with Sarja resin.
सघण्टाफलकाः सर्वे वासीवृक्षादनान्विताः ।
व्याघ्रचर्मपरीवारा वृताश्च द्वीपिचर्मभिः ॥६॥
6. saghaṇṭāphalakāḥ sarve vāsīvṛkṣādanānvitāḥ ,
vyāghracarmaparīvārā vṛtāśca dvīpicarmabhiḥ.
6. sa-ghaṇṭā-phalakāḥ sarve vāsī-vṛkṣādanā-anvitāḥ

6. All of them were equipped with bells and shields, along with axes and tree-cutting tools. They wore tiger skins and were adorned with leopard skins.
सवस्तयः सशृङ्गाश्च सप्रासविविधायुधाः ।
सकुठाराः सकुद्दालाः सतैलक्षौमसर्पिषः ॥७॥
7. savastayaḥ saśṛṅgāśca saprāsavividhāyudhāḥ ,
sakuṭhārāḥ sakuddālāḥ satailakṣaumasarpiṣaḥ.
7. sa-vastayaḥ sa-śṛṅgāḥ ca sa-prāsa-vividhāyudhāḥ
sa-kuṭhārāḥ sa-kuddālāḥ sa-taila-kṣauma-sarpiṣaḥ

7. They were equipped with quivers, and with horns (possibly horn-tipped weapons), along with spears and various other armaments. They also carried axes and spades, and possessed oil, linen, and ghee.
चित्रानीकाः सुवपुषो ज्वलिता इव पावकाः ।
तथा कवचिनः शूराः शस्त्रेषु कृतनिश्रमाः ॥८॥
8. citrānīkāḥ suvapuṣo jvalitā iva pāvakāḥ ,
tathā kavacinaḥ śūrāḥ śastreṣu kṛtaniśramāḥ.

8. They had splendid formations and handsome bodies, glowing like blazing fires. Furthermore, they were armored, brave warriors, highly skilled in the use of weapons.
कुलीना हययोनिज्ञाः सारथ्ये विनिवेशिताः ।
बद्धारिष्टा बद्धकक्ष्या बद्धध्वजपताकिनः ॥९॥
9. kulīnā hayayonijñāḥ sārathye viniveśitāḥ ,
baddhāriṣṭā baddhakakṣyā baddhadhvajapatākinaḥ.
9. kulīnāḥ haya-yoni-jñāḥ sārathye viniveśitāḥ
baddha-ariṣṭāḥ baddha-kakṣyāḥ baddha-dhvaja-patākinah

9. They were of noble lineage, skilled in understanding horse breeds, and specifically appointed for charioteering. They wore protective amulets, had their waistbands securely fastened, and carried banners and flags.
चतुर्युजो रथाः सर्वे सर्वे शस्त्रसमायुताः ।
संहृष्टवाहनाः सर्वे सर्वे शतशरासनाः ॥१०॥
10. caturyujo rathāḥ sarve sarve śastrasamāyutāḥ ,
saṁhṛṣṭavāhanāḥ sarve sarve śataśarāsanāḥ.
10. catur-yujaḥ rathāḥ sarve sarve śastra-samāyutāḥ
saṃhṛṣṭa-vāhanāḥ sarve sarve śata-śarāsanāḥ
10. sarve rathāḥ catur-yujaḥ sarve śastra-samāyutāḥ

10. All chariots were yoked with four horses, all were equipped with weapons, all had eager steeds, and all possessed a hundred bows.
धुर्ययोर्हययोरेकस्तथान्यौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ।
तौ चापि रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ रथी च हयवित्तथा ॥११॥
11. dhuryayorhayayorekastathānyau pārṣṇisārathī ,
tau cāpi rathināṁ śreṣṭhau rathī ca hayavittathā.
11. dhuryayoḥ hayayoḥ ekaḥ tathā anyau pārṣṇi-sārathī
tau ca api rathinām śreṣṭhau rathī ca hayavit tathā

11. One charioteer was for the two lead horses, and likewise, two assistant charioteers were positioned at the rear. And those two assistant charioteers were also excellent among charioteers, and the main charioteer was likewise a knower of horses.
नगराणीव गुप्तानि दुरादेयानि शत्रुभिः ।
आसन्रथसहस्राणि हेममालीनि सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. nagarāṇīva guptāni durādeyāni śatrubhiḥ ,
āsanrathasahasrāṇi hemamālīni sarvaśaḥ.
12. nagarāṇi iva guptāni durādeyāni śatrubhiḥ
āsan ratha-sahasrāṇi hema-mālīni sarvaśaḥ

12. Thousands of chariots, adorned with gold garlands, were everywhere, protected like cities and difficult for enemies to conquer.
यथा रथास्तथा नागा बद्धकक्ष्याः स्वलंकृताः ।
बभूवुः सप्त पुरुषा रत्नवन्त इवाद्रयः ॥१३॥
13. yathā rathāstathā nāgā baddhakakṣyāḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ ,
babhūvuḥ sapta puruṣā ratnavanta ivādrayaḥ.
13. yathā rathāḥ tathā nāgāḥ baddha-kakṣyāḥ su-alaṃkṛtāḥ
babhūvuḥ sapta puruṣāḥ ratnavantaḥ iva adrayaḥ
13. yathā rathāḥ (āsan),
tathā baddha-kakṣyāḥ su-alaṃkṛtāḥ nāgāḥ babhūvuḥ.
sapta puruṣāḥ ca ratnavantaḥ adrayaḥ iva (babhūvuḥ)
13. Just as there were chariots, so too were there elephants with tightened girths and well-adorned. There were also seven men who resembled mountains laden with jewels.
द्वावङ्कुशधरौ तेषु द्वावुत्तमधनुर्धरौ ।
द्वौ वरासिधरौ राजन्नेकः शक्तिपताकधृक् ॥१४॥
14. dvāvaṅkuśadharau teṣu dvāvuttamadhanurdharau ,
dvau varāsidharau rājannekaḥ śaktipatākadhṛk.
14. dvau aṅkuśadharau teṣu dvau uttamadhanurdharau
dvau varāsidharau rājan ekaḥ śaktipatākadhṛk
14. rājan teṣu dvau aṅkuśadharau dvau uttamadhanurdharau

14. O King, among them, there were two who held elephant goads, two who were excellent archers, two who wielded excellent swords, and one who carried a spear and a banner.
गजैर्मत्तैः समाकीर्णं सवर्मायुधकोशकैः ।
तद्बभूव बलं राजन्कौरव्यस्य सहस्रशः ॥१५॥
15. gajairmattaiḥ samākīrṇaṁ savarmāyudhakośakaiḥ ,
tadbabhūva balaṁ rājankauravyasya sahasraśaḥ.
15. gajaiḥ mattaiḥ samākīrṇam sa-varmāyudhakośakaiḥ
tat babhūva balam rājan kauravyasya sahasraśaḥ
15. rājan tat kauravyasya balam mattaiḥ gajaiḥ
sa-varmāyudhakośakaiḥ sahasraśaḥ samākīrṇam babhūva
15. O King, that army of the Kuru prince was filled by thousands of intoxicated elephants, along with their armor, weapons, and provisions.
विचित्रकवचामुक्तैः सपताकैः स्वलंकृतैः ।
सादिभिश्चोपसंपन्ना आसन्नयुतशो हयाः ॥१६॥
16. vicitrakavacāmuktaiḥ sapatākaiḥ svalaṁkṛtaiḥ ,
sādibhiścopasaṁpannā āsannayutaśo hayāḥ.
16. vicitrakavacāmuktaiḥ sa-patākaiḥ su-alaṅkṛtaiḥ
sādibhiḥ ca upasaṃpannāḥ āsan ayutaśaḥ hayāḥ
16. hayāḥ ca ayutaśaḥ vicitrakavacāmuktaiḥ sa-patākaiḥ
su-alaṅkṛtaiḥ sādibhiḥ upasaṃpannāḥ āsan
16. And tens of thousands of horses were present, furnished with riders wearing variegated armor and adorned with banners, all well-decorated.
सुसंग्राहाः सुसंतोषा हेमभाण्डपरिच्छदाः ।
अनेकशतसाहस्रास्ते च सादिवशे स्थिताः ॥१७॥
17. susaṁgrāhāḥ susaṁtoṣā hemabhāṇḍaparicchadāḥ ,
anekaśatasāhasrāste ca sādivaśe sthitāḥ.
17. susangrāhāḥ susantoṣāḥ hemabhāṇḍaparicchadāḥ
anekaśatasāhasrāḥ te ca sādi-vaśe sthitāḥ
17. te ca susangrāhāḥ susantoṣāḥ hemabhāṇḍaparicchadāḥ
anekaśatasāhasrāḥ sādi-vaśe sthitāḥ
17. And those horses were easily manageable, well-fed, adorned with golden ornaments, numbering many hundreds of thousands, and remained under the control of their riders.
नानारूपविकाराश्च नानाकवचशस्त्रिणः ।
पदातिनो नरास्तत्र बभूवुर्हेममालिनः ॥१८॥
18. nānārūpavikārāśca nānākavacaśastriṇaḥ ,
padātino narāstatra babhūvurhemamālinaḥ.
18. nānārūpavikārāḥ ca nānākavacaśastriṇaḥ
padātinaḥ narāḥ tatra babhūvuḥ hemamālinaḥ
18. tatra narāḥ padātinaḥ nānārūpavikārāḥ ca

18. There were men (narās) serving as foot soldiers (padātinaḥ) who exhibited various appearances, were equipped with diverse armors and weapons, and were adorned with golden garlands.
रथस्यासन्दश गजा गजस्य दश वाजिनः ।
नरा दश हयस्यासन्पादरक्षाः समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. rathasyāsandaśa gajā gajasya daśa vājinaḥ ,
narā daśa hayasyāsanpādarakṣāḥ samantataḥ.
19. rathasya āsan daśa gajāḥ gajasya daśa vājinaḥ
narāḥ daśa hayasya āsan pādarākṣāḥ samantataḥ
19. rathasya daśa gajāḥ āsan gajasya daśa vājinaḥ

19. Ten elephants were assigned to a single chariot. For each elephant, there were ten horses. And for each horse, there were ten men serving as foot guards (pādarākṣāḥ) on all sides.
रथस्य नागाः पञ्चाशन्नागस्यासञ्शतं हयाः ।
हयस्य पुरुषाः सप्त भिन्नसंधानकारिणः ॥२०॥
20. rathasya nāgāḥ pañcāśannāgasyāsañśataṁ hayāḥ ,
hayasya puruṣāḥ sapta bhinnasaṁdhānakāriṇaḥ.
20. rathasya nāgāḥ pañcāśat nāgasya āsan śatam hayāḥ
hayasya puruṣāḥ sapta bhinnasaṃdhānakāriṇaḥ
20. rathasya pañcāśat nāgāḥ nāgasya śatam hayāḥ āsan
hayasya sapta puruṣāḥ bhinnasaṃdhānakāriṇaḥ
20. Fifty elephants were assigned to each chariot. For each elephant, there were a hundred horses. And for each horse, there were seven men who specialized in repairing damage or restoring formations (bhinna-saṃdhāna-kāriṇaḥ).
सेना पञ्चशतं नागा रथास्तावन्त एव च ।
दशसेना च पृतना पृतना दशवाहिनी ॥२१॥
21. senā pañcaśataṁ nāgā rathāstāvanta eva ca ,
daśasenā ca pṛtanā pṛtanā daśavāhinī.
21. senā pañcaśatam nāgāḥ rathāḥ tāvantaḥ eva
ca daśa-senā ca pṛtanā pṛtanā daśa-vāhinī
21. senā pañcaśatam nāgāḥ rathāḥ ca tāvantaḥ
eva daśa-senā ca pṛtanā pṛtanā daśa-vāhinī
21. A "senā" unit comprises five hundred elephants and an equal number of chariots. Furthermore, ten "senā"s constitute a "pṛtanā", and a "pṛtanā" is composed of ten "vāhinī"s.
वाहिनी पृतना सेना ध्वजिनी सादिनी चमूः ।
अक्षौहिणीति पर्यायैर्निरुक्ताथ वरूथिनी ।
एवं व्यूढान्यनीकानि कौरवेयेण धीमता ॥२२॥
22. vāhinī pṛtanā senā dhvajinī sādinī camūḥ ,
akṣauhiṇīti paryāyairniruktātha varūthinī ,
evaṁ vyūḍhānyanīkāni kauraveyeṇa dhīmatā.

camūḥ akṣauhiṇī iti paryāyaiḥ
niruktā atha varūthinī evam

22. The terms vāhinī, pṛtanā, senā, dhvajinī, sādinī, camūḥ, and akṣauhiṇī are designated by synonyms, and so also is varūthinī. In this way, the armies were arrayed by the intelligent son of Kuru (Duryodhana).
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च संख्याताः सप्त चैव ह ।
अक्षौहिण्यस्तु सप्तैव पाण्डवानामभूद्बलम् ।
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च कौरवाणामभूद्बलम् ॥२३॥
23. akṣauhiṇyo daśaikā ca saṁkhyātāḥ sapta caiva ha ,
akṣauhiṇyastu saptaiva pāṇḍavānāmabhūdbalam ,
akṣauhiṇyo daśaikā ca kauravāṇāmabhūdbalam.
23. akṣauhiṇyaḥ daśa ekā ca saṃkhyātāḥ
sapta ca eva ha akṣauhiṇyaḥ tu sapta
eva pāṇḍavānām abhūt balam akṣauhiṇyaḥ
daśa ekā ca kauravāṇām abhūt balam
23. daśa ekā ca sapta ca ha (akṣauhiṇyaḥ)
saṃkhyātāḥ tu pāṇḍavānām sapta eva
akṣauhiṇyaḥ balam abhūt (tu) kauravāṇām
daśa ekā ca akṣauhiṇyaḥ balam abhūt
23. Eleven and seven akṣauhiṇī divisions are enumerated. The Pāṇḍavas' army consisted of seven akṣauhiṇī divisions, while the Kauravas' army consisted of eleven akṣauhiṇī divisions.
नराणां पञ्चपञ्चाशदेषा पत्तिर्विधीयते ।
सेनामुखं च तिस्रस्ता गुल्म इत्यभिसंज्ञितः ॥२४॥
24. narāṇāṁ pañcapañcāśadeṣā pattirvidhīyate ,
senāmukhaṁ ca tisrastā gulma ityabhisaṁjñitaḥ.
24. narāṇām pañca pañcāśat eṣā pattiḥ vidhīyate
senāmukham ca tisraḥ tāḥ gulmaḥ iti abhisaṃjñitaḥ
24. eṣā pattiḥ narāṇām pañca pañcāśat vidhīyate ca tisraḥ
tāḥ senāmukham (tat senāmukham) gulmaḥ iti abhisaṃjñitaḥ
24. This 'patti' (military unit) is stated to consist of fifty-five men. Three of these (pattis) form a 'senāmukha', and that (senāmukha) is then called a 'gulma'.
दश गुल्मा गणस्त्वासीद्गणास्त्वयुतशोऽभवन् ।
दुर्योधनस्य सेनासु योत्स्यमानाः प्रहारिणः ॥२५॥
25. daśa gulmā gaṇastvāsīdgaṇāstvayutaśo'bhavan ,
duryodhanasya senāsu yotsyamānāḥ prahāriṇaḥ.
25. daśa gulmāḥ gaṇaḥ tu āsīt gaṇāḥ tu ayutaśaḥ
abhavan duryodhanasya senāsu yotsyamānāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
25. daśa gulmāḥ gaṇaḥ tu āsīt tu gaṇāḥ ayutaśaḥ abhavan duryodhanasya senāsu yotsyamānāḥ prahāriṇaḥ (āsīt,
abhavan)
25. Ten 'gulmas' formed a 'gaṇa'. And these 'gaṇas' numbered in tens of thousands, consisting of Duryodhana's striking warriors who were ready to fight in his armies.
तत्र दुर्योधनो राजा शूरान्बुद्धिमतो नरान् ।
प्रसमीक्ष्य महाबाहुश्चक्रे सेनापतींस्तदा ॥२६॥
26. tatra duryodhano rājā śūrānbuddhimato narān ,
prasamīkṣya mahābāhuścakre senāpatīṁstadā.
26. tatra duryodhanaḥ rājā śūrān buddhimataḥ narān
pra-samīkṣya mahābāhuḥ cakre senāpatīn tadā
26. tadā mahābāhuḥ rājā duryodhanaḥ tatra śūrān

26. Then, King Duryodhana, the mighty-armed one, having carefully observed the brave and intelligent men, appointed them as army commanders at that time.
पृथगक्षौहिणीनां च प्रणेतॄन्नरसत्तमान् ।
विधिपूर्वं समानीय पार्थिवानभ्यषेचयत् ॥२७॥
27. pṛthagakṣauhiṇīnāṁ ca praṇetṝnnarasattamān ,
vidhipūrvaṁ samānīya pārthivānabhyaṣecayat.
27. pṛthak akṣauhiṇīnām ca praṇetṝn narasattamān
vidhipūrvam samānīya pārthivān abhyaṣecayat
27. ca pṛthak akṣauhiṇīnām praṇetṝn narasattamān

27. And he, having brought together those best of men, the commanders of the individual akṣauhiṇīs, consecrated those kings according to ritualistic tradition.
कृपं द्रोणं च शल्यं च सैन्धवं च महारथम् ।
सुदक्षिणं च काम्बोजं कृतवर्माणमेव च ॥२८॥
28. kṛpaṁ droṇaṁ ca śalyaṁ ca saindhavaṁ ca mahāratham ,
sudakṣiṇaṁ ca kāmbojaṁ kṛtavarmāṇameva ca.
28. kṛpam droṇam ca śalyam ca saindhavam ca mahāratham
sudakṣiṇam ca kāmbojam kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca

ca kāmbojam sudakṣiṇam ca kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca
28. And Kṛpa, and Droṇa, and Śalya, and Saṃdhava (the lord of Sindhu), who was a great chariot-warrior (mahāratha); and Sudakṣiṇa of Kamboja, and Kṛtavarmā as well.
द्रोणपुत्रं च कर्णं च भूरिश्रवसमेव च ।
शकुनिं सौबलं चैव बाह्लीकं च महारथम् ॥२९॥
29. droṇaputraṁ ca karṇaṁ ca bhūriśravasameva ca ,
śakuniṁ saubalaṁ caiva bāhlīkaṁ ca mahāratham.

29. And Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), and Karṇa, and Bhūriśravas as well; and Śakuni, son of Subala, and Bāhlīka, the great chariot-warrior (mahāratha), as well.
दिवसे दिवसे तेषां प्रतिवेलं च भारत ।
चक्रे स विविधाः संज्ञाः प्रत्यक्षं च पुनः पुनः ॥३०॥
30. divase divase teṣāṁ prativelaṁ ca bhārata ,
cakre sa vividhāḥ saṁjñāḥ pratyakṣaṁ ca punaḥ punaḥ.

sa divase divase ca prativelam punaḥ punaḥ ca pratyakṣam teṣām vividhāḥ saṃjñāḥ cakre.
30. O Bhārata, day after day, and at every turn, he repeatedly and directly gave them various signals.
तथा विनियताः सर्वे ये च तेषां पदानुगाः ।
बभूवुः सैनिका राजन्राज्ञः प्रियचिकीर्षवः ॥३१॥
31. tathā viniyatāḥ sarve ye ca teṣāṁ padānugāḥ ,
babhūvuḥ sainikā rājanrājñaḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ.

babhūvuḥ sainikāḥ rājan rājñaḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ
31. rājan,
tathā ye ca teṣām padānugāḥ,
te sarve sainikāḥ viniyatāḥ rājñaḥ priyacikīrṣavaḥ babhūvuḥ.
31. O King, all those soldiers and their followers thus became disciplined and eager to please the king (Duryodhana).
