Janamejaya said: "Yayāti, our ancestor, who was the tenth (in lineage) from Prajāpati - how did he obtain Śukra's daughter, who was exceedingly rare?"

O best of Brahmins, I wish to hear this in detail. Please narrate to me, in sequential order, about the descendants of Puru, each one separately.

Vaiśampāyana said: There was a royal sage named Yayāti, whose brilliance was equal to that of the king of the gods. Indeed, Śukra and Vṛṣaparvā chose him, just as they had done previously.

4.
O Janamejaya, since you are asking, I will now narrate that story in detail to you: the union of Devayānī and Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa.

Indeed, a mutual conflict arose between the gods and the asuras over supremacy in the three worlds, which include all moving and non-moving beings.

6.
Then, aspiring for victory, the gods chose the sage Aṅgirasa (Bṛhaspati) as their priest for performing yagyas. However, the others (the asuras) chose Kāvya (Śukra, the son of Uśanas). Those two Brahmins were constantly and intensely rivals to each other.

7.
There, the gods killed those Dānavas who were engaged in battle. But Kāvya (Śukra) revived them again, relying on the power of his knowledge. Then, having risen once more, they fought the gods.

8.
But when the Asuras killed the gods at the forefront of battle, Bṛhaspati, the noble-minded, could not revive them.

9.
For he (Bṛhaspati) did not know that knowledge, the Saṃjīvanī, which the powerful Kāvya (Śukra) knew. Therefore, the gods fell into great despondency.

10.
But those gods, agitated by fear of Kāvya (Uśanas) at that time, approached Kaca, the eldest son of Bṛhaspati, and said:

11.
Serve us who are serving you, and grant us excellent help. That knowledge which resides with the Brahmin of immeasurable brilliance, Śukra - acquire that quickly! You will then be a partaker with us.

That Brahmin can be seen by you near Vṛṣaparvan. He protects the Dānavas there, but he does not protect those who are not Dānavas.

You, being young, are capable of propitiating that sage (Śukra), and also Devayānī, the beloved daughter of that great soul.

14.
No other person is capable of propitiating (them). Indeed, by means of good character, courtesy, sweetness, good conduct, and self-control, you will certainly obtain that knowledge when Devayānī is pleased.

Saying 'So be it,' Kacha, the son of Bṛhaspati, departed. Honored by the Devas, he then went to the vicinity of Vṛṣaparvan.

O King, Kacha, who was sent by the Devas, quickly went to the city of the Asura king and, upon seeing Śukra, spoke these words.

Vaishampayana said: Kacha, having thus responded to him (Shukra) with 'so be it,' then accepted that vow which had been commanded by Shukra, the son of Kavi and Ushanas himself.

Thus, five hundred years passed while Kacha observed his vow. Then, having become aware, the Danavas targeted that Kacha.

Having seen Kacha alone in the forest protecting cows, the Danavas, enraged, killed him out of hatred for Brihaspati and indeed, for the sake of preserving (their) knowledge. Then, having killed him, they cut him into tiny pieces and offered them to the wolves.

48.
O cherished one, having become (my) son, dear one, having emerged from this body, you should honor me. Having obtained knowledge from the Guru (me), you, now learned, should maintain a righteous perspective.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।

Vaiśampāyana said: Having obtained knowledge from his Guru, the Brahmin (Kacha) emerged, splitting open the belly. Kacha, beautiful in form, came forth from the right side of the Brahmin (Sukracharya) like the moon on a full moon night at the end of the bright fortnight.
दृष्ट्वा च तं पतितं ब्रह्मराशिमुत्थापयामास मृतं कचोऽपि ।

50.
And Kacha, upon seeing that fallen, dead, revered Brahmin (Sukracharya), revived him. Then, having obtained that perfected knowledge and having saluted the Guru, Kacha spoke thus to him.
ऋतस्य दातारमनुत्तमस्य निधिं निधीनां चतुरन्वयानाम् ।

51.
Those who do not honor a worshipful Guru - who is the giver of unsurpassed truth and a treasure among the treasures of the four (Vedic) traditions - go to unsupported, sinful worlds.

Vaiśampāyana said: After Kaca was made to suffer deception and an extremely terrible loss of consciousness due to wine-drinking, and after the very handsome Kaca was seen at that time, having drunk wine and become bewildered by it...

53.
Then, the greatly illustrious Uśanā, filled with wrath, rose up. Desiring the welfare of the Brahmins, Kāvya himself, having become suspicious regarding wine-drinking, spoke these words.

54. yo brāhmaṇo'dya prabhṛtīha kaści;nmohātsurāṁ pāsyati mandabuddhiḥ ,

54.

54.
Any Brahmin who, from today onwards and in this world, out of delusion and with a dull intellect, drinks wine - he shall lose his dharma and become a Brahmin-killer. He shall be condemned in this world and in the next.

55.
By me, this limit - this boundary of injunctions regarding the dharma of Brahmins - has indeed been established for all the world. Let all righteous Brahmins who have listened to their gurus, and all gods and all worlds, listen (attentively)!

56.
Having said this, that greatly illustrious one, the immeasurable repository of ascetic austerities, summoned those Dānavas whose minds were bewildered by fate, and spoke these words to them.

57. ācakṣe vo dānavā bāliśāḥ stha; siddhaḥ kaco vatsyati matsakāśe ,

saṁjīvanīṁ prāpya vidyāṁ mahārthāṁ; tulyaprabhāvo brahmaṇā brahmabhūtaḥ.
57.

siddhaḥ kacaḥ vatsyati mat-sakāśe

57.
I declare to you, O Danavas, that you are foolish. Kacha will stay with me and, having obtained the greatly valuable knowledge of Sanjivani, he will become equal in power to Brahman, having realized his Brahman-nature.

58. guroruṣya sakāśe tu daśa varṣaśatāni saḥ ,

anujñātaḥ kaco gantumiyeṣa tridaśālayam.
58.

anujñātaḥ kacaḥ gantum iyeṣa tridaśālayam
anujñātaḥ kacaḥ gantum iyeṣa tridaśālayam
58.
Indeed, after Kacha had resided in his guru's presence for a thousand years, he, having been granted permission, desired to go to the abode of the gods.
