1.
Vaiśampāyana said: When the King of the Kurus (Duryodhana) and Bhīma, the foremost among the strong, were in the arena, that populace, whose affection was swayed by partiality, became as if divided into two factions.
हा वीर कुरुराजेति हा भीमेति च नर्दताम् ।

2.
"Oh warrior, King of the Kurus!" and "Oh Bhīma!"—as men shouted these words, very vast roars suddenly arose from the populace.

3.
Then, seeing the arena resembling a turbulent ocean, the intelligent Bhāradvāja (Drona) spoke to his dear son, Aśvatthāman.
वारयैतौ महावीर्यौ कृतयोग्यावुभावपि ।

Restrain these two immensely powerful ones, both of whom have already demonstrated their skill, lest this disturbance in the arena, arising from Bhīma and Duryodhana, should occur.

5.
Then, those two (Bhīma and Duryodhana), with uplifted maces, were restrained by the guru's son (Aśvatthāman). They were agitated like the winds at the end of a cosmic age (yuga) and like two oceans of great force.

Then Droṇa, having entered the arena, spoke, silencing the ensemble of musical instruments that roared like a great cloud.

"May that Pārtha (Arjuna), who is dearer to me than my own son, who is the best among all those skilled in various weapons, and who is equal to the younger brother of Indra (Kṛṣṇa), now be seen!"

Then, at the teacher's command, the young man, for whom an auspicious rite had been performed, appeared, wearing a leather finger-guard, equipped with a full quiver, and carrying a bow.

Then a great roar of excitement arose from the entire arena, and musical instruments, accompanied by conch shells, were played from all directions.
