नारद उवाच ।
अथ प्रचलितः स्थानादासनाच्च परिच्युतः ।
कम्पितेनैव मनसा धर्षितः शोकवह्निना ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
atha pracalitaḥ sthānādāsanācca paricyutaḥ ,
kampitenaiva manasā dharṣitaḥ śokavahninā.

1. Nārada said: Then, he departed from his place and fell from his seat, his mind agitated, assailed by the fire of sorrow.
म्लानस्रग्भ्रष्टविज्ञानः प्रभ्रष्टमुकुटाङ्गदः ।
विघूर्णन्स्रस्तसर्वाङ्गः प्रभ्रष्टाभरणाम्बरः ॥२॥
2. mlānasragbhraṣṭavijñānaḥ prabhraṣṭamukuṭāṅgadaḥ ,
vighūrṇansrastasarvāṅgaḥ prabhraṣṭābharaṇāmbaraḥ.
2. mlānasrak bhraṣṭavijñānaḥ prabhraṣṭamukuṭāṅgadaḥ |
vighūrṇan srastasarvāṅgaḥ prabhraṣṭābharaṇāmbaraḥ
2. His garland withered, his consciousness lost, his crown and armlets fallen off, he was staggering, all his limbs slackened, and his ornaments and garments had fallen away.
अदृश्यमानस्तान्पश्यन्नपश्यंश्च पुनः पुनः ।
शून्यः शून्येन मनसा प्रपतिष्यन्महीतलम् ॥३॥
3. adṛśyamānastānpaśyannapaśyaṁśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
śūnyaḥ śūnyena manasā prapatiṣyanmahītalam.
3. adṛśyamānaḥ tān paśyan apaśyan ca punaḥ punaḥ
| śūnyaḥ śūnyena manasā prapatiṣyan mahītalam
3. Unseen, he repeatedly saw and yet did not see them; bewildered, with a vacant mind, he was about to fall to the ground.
किं मया मनसा ध्यातमशुभं धर्मदूषणम् ।
येनाहं चलितः स्थानादिति राजा व्यचिन्तयत् ॥४॥
4. kiṁ mayā manasā dhyātamaśubhaṁ dharmadūṣaṇam ,
yenāhaṁ calitaḥ sthānāditi rājā vyacintayat.
4. kim mayā manasā dhyātam aśubham dharmadūṣaṇam |
yena aham calitaḥ sthānāt iti rājā vyacintayat
4. "What inauspicious act, what defilement of natural law (dharma), did I contemplate with my mind, that I have been displaced from my position?" Thus, the king pondered.
ते तु तत्रैव राजानः सिद्धाश्चाप्सरसस्तथा ।
अपश्यन्त निरालम्बं ययातिं तं परिच्युतम् ॥५॥
5. te tu tatraiva rājānaḥ siddhāścāpsarasastathā ,
apaśyanta nirālambaṁ yayātiṁ taṁ paricyutam.
5. te tu tatra eva rājānaḥ siddhāḥ ca apsarasaḥ
tathā apaśyanta nirālambam yayātim tam paricyutam
5. The kings, siddhas, and apsaras, who were present there, saw that Yayāti had fallen and was utterly without support.
अथैत्य पुरुषः कश्चित्क्षीणपुण्यनिपातकः ।
ययातिमब्रवीद्राजन्देवराजस्य शासनात् ॥६॥
6. athaitya puruṣaḥ kaścitkṣīṇapuṇyanipātakaḥ ,
yayātimabravīdrājandevarājasya śāsanāt.
6. atha etya puruṣaḥ kaścit kṣīṇapuṇyanipātakaḥ
yayātim abravīt rājan devarājasya śāsanāt
6. Then, a certain man, who was tasked with casting down those whose accumulated merit (puṇya) had been exhausted, approached Yayāti and said, "O king, by the command of Indra, the king of the gods..."
अतीव मदमत्तस्त्वं न कंचिन्नावमन्यसे ।
मानेन भ्रष्टः स्वर्गस्ते नार्हस्त्वं पार्थिवात्मज ।
न च प्रज्ञायसे गच्छ पतस्वेति तमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. atīva madamattastvaṁ na kaṁcinnāvamanyase ,
mānena bhraṣṭaḥ svargaste nārhastvaṁ pārthivātmaja ,
na ca prajñāyase gaccha patasveti tamabravīt.
7. atīva madamattaḥ tvam na kañcit na
avamanyase mānena bhraṣṭaḥ svargaḥ te na
arhasi tvam pārthivātmaja na ca
prajñāyase gaccha patasva iti tam abravīt
7. "You are excessively intoxicated with pride, and you disrespect everyone. Your heavenly abode (svarga) has been lost due to your arrogance. You are not worthy, O son of a king (pārthivātmaja)! You are not recognized here. Go, fall!" Thus, he spoke to him.
पतेयं सत्स्विति वचस्त्रिरुक्त्वा नहुषात्मजः ।
पतिष्यंश्चिन्तयामास गतिं गतिमतां वरः ॥८॥
8. pateyaṁ satsviti vacastriruktvā nahuṣātmajaḥ ,
patiṣyaṁścintayāmāsa gatiṁ gatimatāṁ varaḥ.
8. pateyam satsu iti vacaḥ triḥ uktvā nahuṣātmajaḥ
patiṣyan cintayāmāsa gatim gatimatām varaḥ
8. "May I fall among noble persons (sat)," the son of Nahuṣa (Yayāti) said this word three times. As he was about to fall, that foremost among all beings (gatimatām varaḥ) pondered his destination.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु नैमिषे पार्थिवर्षभान् ।
चतुरोऽपश्यत नृपस्तेषां मध्ये पपात सः ॥९॥
9. etasminneva kāle tu naimiṣe pārthivarṣabhān ,
caturo'paśyata nṛpasteṣāṁ madhye papāta saḥ.
9. etasmin eva kāle tu naimiṣe pārthivarṣabhān
caturaḥ apaśyata nṛpaḥ teṣām madhye papāta saḥ
9. At that very time, the king saw four excellent kings in the Naimiṣa forest. He then fell among them.
प्रतर्दनो वसुमनाः शिबिरौशीनरोऽष्टकः ।
वाजपेयेन यज्ञेन तर्पयन्ति सुरेश्वरम् ॥१०॥
10. pratardano vasumanāḥ śibirauśīnaro'ṣṭakaḥ ,
vājapeyena yajñena tarpayanti sureśvaram.
10. pratardanaḥ vasumanāḥ śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ aṣṭakaḥ
vājapeyena yajñena tarpayanti sureśvaram
10. pratardanaḥ vasumanāḥ śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ aṣṭakaḥ
vājapeyena yajñena sureśvaram tarpayanti
10. Pratardana, Vasumanas, Śibi Auśīnara, and Aṣṭaka satisfy the lord of the gods by means of the Vājapeya Vedic ritual (yajña).
तेषामध्वरजं धूमं स्वर्गद्वारमुपस्थितम् ।
ययातिरुपजिघ्रन्वै निपपात महीं प्रति ॥११॥
11. teṣāmadhvarajaṁ dhūmaṁ svargadvāramupasthitam ,
yayātirupajighranvai nipapāta mahīṁ prati.
11. teṣām adhvarajam dhūmam svargadvāram upasthitam
yayātiḥ upajighran vai nipapāta mahīm prati
11. vai yayātiḥ teṣām adhvarajam dhūmam svargadvāram
upasthitam upajighran mahīm prati nipapāta
11. Indeed, Yayāti, smelling the smoke risen from their Vedic rituals (yajña) that was approaching the gate of heaven, fell down towards the earth.
भूमौ स्वर्गे च संबद्धां नदीं धूममयीं नृपः ।
स गङ्गामिव गच्छन्तीमालम्ब्य जगतीपतिः ॥१२॥
12. bhūmau svarge ca saṁbaddhāṁ nadīṁ dhūmamayīṁ nṛpaḥ ,
sa gaṅgāmiva gacchantīmālambya jagatīpatiḥ.
12. bhūmau svarge ca sambaddhām nadīm dhūmamayīm nṛpaḥ
saḥ gaṅgām iva gacchantīm ālambya jagatīpatiḥ
12. The king, the lord of the earth (Yayāti), holding onto that smoky river, which connected both earth and heaven and was flowing like the Gaṅgā...
श्रीमत्स्ववभृथाग्र्येषु चतुर्षु प्रतिबन्धुषु ।
मध्ये निपतितो राजा लोकपालोपमेषु च ॥१३॥
13. śrīmatsvavabhṛthāgryeṣu caturṣu pratibandhuṣu ,
madhye nipatito rājā lokapālopameṣu ca.
13. śrīmatsu avabhṛthāgryeṣu caturṣu pratibandhuṣu
madhye nipatitaḥ rājā lokapālopameṣu ca
13. The king, who was comparable to the guardians of the world, fell amidst four glorious, foremost adversaries, who were like the completion of great sacrifices.
चतुर्षु हुतकल्पेषु राजसिंहमहाग्निषु ।
पपात मध्ये राजर्षिर्ययातिः पुण्यसंक्षये ॥१४॥
14. caturṣu hutakalpeṣu rājasiṁhamahāgniṣu ,
papāta madhye rājarṣiryayātiḥ puṇyasaṁkṣaye.
14. caturṣu hutakalpeṣu rājasiṃhamahāgniṣu
papāta madhye rājarṣiḥ yayātiḥ puṇyasaṃkṣaye
14. Upon the exhaustion of his merit (puṇya), the royal sage (rājarṣi) Yayāti fell amidst four powerful, lion-like kings, who resembled great sacrificial fires consuming offerings.
तमाहुः पार्थिवाः सर्वे प्रतिमानमिव श्रियः ।
को भवान्कस्य वा बन्धुर्देशस्य नगरस्य वा ॥१५॥
15. tamāhuḥ pārthivāḥ sarve pratimānamiva śriyaḥ ,
ko bhavānkasya vā bandhurdeśasya nagarasya vā.
15. tam āhuḥ pārthivāḥ sarve pratimānam iva śriyaḥ
kaḥ bhavān kasya vā bandhuḥ deśasya nagarasya vā
15. All the kings addressed him, who was like an embodiment of splendor (śrī): "Who are you, and whose relative are you? From which country or city do you come?"
यक्षो वाप्यथ वा देवो गन्धर्वो राक्षसोऽपि वा ।
न हि मानुषरूपोऽसि को वार्थः काङ्क्षितस्त्वया ॥१६॥
16. yakṣo vāpyatha vā devo gandharvo rākṣaso'pi vā ,
na hi mānuṣarūpo'si ko vārthaḥ kāṅkṣitastvayā.
16. yakṣaḥ vā api atha vā devaḥ gandharvaḥ rākṣasaḥ api vā
na hi mānuṣarūpaḥ asi kaḥ vā arthaḥ kāṅkṣitaḥ tvayā
16. "Are you a yakṣa, or perhaps a god, a gandharva, or even a rākṣasa? Indeed, you are not of human form. What purpose do you desire, or what do you wish for?"
ययातिरुवाच ।
ययातिरस्मि राजर्षिः क्षीणपुण्यश्च्युतो दिवः ।
पतेयं सत्स्विति ध्यायन्भवत्सु पतितस्ततः ॥१७॥
17. yayātiruvāca ,
yayātirasmi rājarṣiḥ kṣīṇapuṇyaścyuto divaḥ ,
pateyaṁ satsviti dhyāyanbhavatsu patitastataḥ.
17. yayātiḥ uvāca | yayātiḥ asmi rājarṣiḥ kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ cyutaḥ
divaḥ | pateyam satsu iti dhyāyan bhavatsu patitaḥ tataḥ
17. Yayati said: "I am Yayati, a royal sage who has fallen from heaven because his accumulated merit (puṇya) has been exhausted. Reflecting, 'May I fall among virtuous people,' I have now indeed fallen among you."
राजान ऊचुः ।
सत्यमेतद्भवतु ते काङ्क्षितं पुरुषर्षभ ।
सर्वेषां नः क्रतुफलं धर्मश्च प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१८॥
18. rājāna ūcuḥ ,
satyametadbhavatu te kāṅkṣitaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
sarveṣāṁ naḥ kratuphalaṁ dharmaśca pratigṛhyatām.
18. rājānaḥ ūcuḥ satyam etat bhavatu te kāṅkṣitam puruṣarṣabha
sarveṣām naḥ kratuphalam dharmaḥ ca pratigṛhyatām
18. rājānaḥ ūcuḥ puruṣarṣabha te etat kāṅkṣitam satyam
bhavatu naḥ sarveṣām kratuphalam ca dharmaḥ pratigṛhyatām
18. The kings said: "O best of men, may this desire of yours be fulfilled. Let the fruit of all our Vedic rituals (kratu) and our righteousness (dharma) be accepted."
ययातिरुवाच ।
नाहं प्रतिग्रहधनो ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो ह्यहम् ।
न च मे प्रवणा बुद्धिः परपुण्यविनाशने ॥१९॥
19. yayātiruvāca ,
nāhaṁ pratigrahadhano brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo hyaham ,
na ca me pravaṇā buddhiḥ parapuṇyavināśane.
19. yayātiḥ uvāca | na aham pratigrahadhanaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ
hi aham | na ca me pravaṇā buddhiḥ parapuṇyavināśane
19. Yayati said: "I am not a Brahmin who lives on wealth obtained through accepting gifts; indeed, I am a Kṣatriya. My mind is also not at all inclined to destroy the merit (puṇya) of others."
नारद उवाच ।
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु मृगचर्याक्रमागताम् ।
माधवीं प्रेक्ष्य राजानस्तेऽभिवाद्येदमब्रुवन् ॥२०॥
20. nārada uvāca ,
etasminneva kāle tu mṛgacaryākramāgatām ,
mādhavīṁ prekṣya rājānaste'bhivādyedamabruvan.
20. nāradaḥ uvāca | etasmin eva kāle tu mṛgacaryākrāmagatām
mādhavīm prekṣya rājānaḥ te abhivādya idam abruvan
20. Nārada said: "Just at that time, seeing Mādhavī (Yayati's daughter), who had arrived on a hunting expedition, the kings bowed to her and spoke as follows."
किमागमनकृत्यं ते किं कुर्मः शासनं तव ।
आज्ञाप्या हि वयं सर्वे तव पुत्रास्तपोधने ॥२१॥
21. kimāgamanakṛtyaṁ te kiṁ kurmaḥ śāsanaṁ tava ,
ājñāpyā hi vayaṁ sarve tava putrāstapodhane.
21. kim āgamana-kṛtyam te kim kurmaḥ śāsanam tava
ājñāpyā hi vayam sarve tava putrāḥ tapodhane
21. What is the purpose of your coming, and what command of yours should we execute? Indeed, O ascetic (tapodhana), we are all your sons, ready to be commanded.
तेषां तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा माधवी परया मुदा ।
पितरं समुपागच्छद्ययातिं सा ववन्द च ॥२२॥
22. teṣāṁ tadbhāṣitaṁ śrutvā mādhavī parayā mudā ,
pitaraṁ samupāgacchadyayātiṁ sā vavanda ca.
22. teṣām tat bhāṣitam śrutvā mādhavī parayā mudā
pitaram sam-upa-āgacchat yayātim sā vavanda ca
22. Having heard their words, Madhavi, filled with great joy, approached her father Yayati and bowed to him.
दृष्ट्वा मूर्ध्ना नतान्पुत्रांस्तापसी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
दौहित्रास्तव राजेन्द्र मम पुत्रा न ते पराः ।
इमे त्वां तारयिष्यन्ति दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम् ॥२३॥
23. dṛṣṭvā mūrdhnā natānputrāṁstāpasī vākyamabravīt ,
dauhitrāstava rājendra mama putrā na te parāḥ ,
ime tvāṁ tārayiṣyanti diṣṭametatpurātanam.
23. dṛṣṭvā mūrdhnā natān putrān tāpasī
vākyam abravīt dauhitrāḥ tava rāja-indra
mama putrāḥ na te parāḥ ime
tvām tārayiṣyanti diṣṭam etat purātanam
23. Seeing her sons bowing with their heads, the female ascetic spoke these words: "Your grandsons, O king of kings, are my sons, not strangers. These will liberate you; this is an ancient decree (diṣṭa)."
अहं ते दुहिता राजन्माधवी मृगचारिणी ।
मयाप्युपचितो धर्मस्ततोऽर्धं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥२४॥
24. ahaṁ te duhitā rājanmādhavī mṛgacāriṇī ,
mayāpyupacito dharmastato'rdhaṁ pratigṛhyatām.
24. aham te duhitā rājan mādhavī mṛga-cāriṇī mayā
api upacitaḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ ardham pratigṛhyatām
24. O king, I am your daughter Madhavi, who roams with the deer. Spiritual merit (dharma) has also been accumulated by me; therefore, let half of it be accepted by you.
यस्माद्राजन्नराः सर्वे अपत्यफलभागिनः ।
तस्मादिच्छन्ति दौहित्रान्यथा त्वं वसुधाधिप ॥२५॥
25. yasmādrājannarāḥ sarve apatyaphalabhāginaḥ ,
tasmādicchanti dauhitrānyathā tvaṁ vasudhādhipa.
25. yasmāt rājan narāḥ sarve apatyaphalabhāginaḥ
tasmāt icchanti dauhitrān yathā tvam vasudhādhipa
25. O king, because all men partake in the fruit of having offspring, they therefore desire grandsons (sons of daughters), just as you do, O ruler of the earth.
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे शिरसा जननीं तदा ।
अभिवाद्य नमस्कृत्य मातामहमथाब्रुवन् ॥२६॥
26. tataste pārthivāḥ sarve śirasā jananīṁ tadā ,
abhivādya namaskṛtya mātāmahamathābruvan.
26. tataḥ te pārthivāḥ sarve śirasā jananīm tadā
abhivādya namaskṛtya mātāmaham atha abruvan
26. Then all those kings, having saluted their mother with their heads at that time, and having offered obeisance to their maternal grandfather, subsequently spoke.
उच्चैरनुपमैः स्निग्धैः स्वरैरापूर्य मेदिनीम् ।
मातामहं नृपतयस्तारयन्तो दिवश्च्युतम् ॥२७॥
27. uccairanupamaiḥ snigdhaiḥ svarairāpūrya medinīm ,
mātāmahaṁ nṛpatayastārayanto divaścyutam.
27. uccaiḥ anupamaiḥ snigdhaiḥ svaraiḥ āpūrya medinīm
mātāmaham nṛpatayaḥ tārayantaḥ divaḥ cyutam
27. Filling the earth with their loud, incomparable, and gentle voices, the kings delivered their maternal grandfather, who had fallen from heaven.
अथ तस्मादुपगतो गालवोऽप्याह पार्थिवम् ।
तपसो मेऽष्टभागेन स्वर्गमारोहतां भवान् ॥२८॥
28. atha tasmādupagato gālavo'pyāha pārthivam ,
tapaso me'ṣṭabhāgena svargamārohatāṁ bhavān.
28. atha tasmāt upagataḥ gālavaḥ api āha pārthivam
tapasaḥ me aṣṭabhāgena svargam ārohatām bhavān
28. Then Gālava, having approached from him, also said to the king, 'May you ascend to heaven by means of the eighth part of my ascetic merit (tapas).'
