वैशंपायन उवाच ।
आगम्य हास्तिनपुरादुपप्लव्यमरिंदमः ।
पाण्डवानां यथावृत्तं केशवः सर्वमुक्तवान् ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having arrived in Upaplavya from Hastinapura, Keśava, the subduer of enemies, reported everything that had transpired regarding the Pāṇḍavas.
संभाष्य सुचिरं कालं मन्त्रयित्वा पुनः पुनः ।
स्वमेवावसथं शौरिर्विश्रामार्थं जगाम ह ॥२॥
2. saṁbhāṣya suciraṁ kālaṁ mantrayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ,
svamevāvasathaṁ śaurirviśrāmārthaṁ jagāma ha.
2. sambhāṣya suciram kālam mantrayitvā punaḥ punaḥ |
svam eva avasatham Śauriḥ viśrāmārtham jagāma ha

2. After conversing for a very long time and repeatedly consulting, Śauri (Krishna) then went to his own abode for the purpose of rest.
विसृज्य सर्वान्नृपतीन्विराटप्रमुखांस्तदा ।
पाण्डवा भ्रातरः पञ्च भानावस्तंगते सति ॥३॥
3. visṛjya sarvānnṛpatīnvirāṭapramukhāṁstadā ,
pāṇḍavā bhrātaraḥ pañca bhānāvastaṁgate sati.
3. visṛjya sarvān nṛpatīn Virāṭapramukhān tadā |
Pāṇḍavā bhrātaraḥ pañca bhānau astamgate sati
3. tadā Virāṭapramukhān sarvān nṛpatīn visṛjya,

3. Then, after dismissing all the kings, with Virāṭa foremost among them, the five Pāṇḍava brothers, when the sun had set...
संध्यामुपास्य ध्यायन्तस्तमेव गतमानसाः ।
आनाय्य कृष्णं दाशार्हं पुनर्मन्त्रममन्त्रयन् ॥४॥
4. saṁdhyāmupāsya dhyāyantastameva gatamānasāḥ ,
ānāyya kṛṣṇaṁ dāśārhaṁ punarmantramamantrayan.
4. sandhyām upāsya dhyāyantaḥ tam eva gatamānasāḥ |
ānāyya Kṛṣṇam Dāśārham punaḥ mantram amantrayan
4. gatamānasāḥ te sandhyām upāsya tam eva dhyāyantaḥ
Dāśārham Kṛṣṇam ānāyya punaḥ mantram amantrayan
4. Having performed their twilight worship (sandhyā) and meditating with their minds fixed on that very one (Keśava), they summoned Krishna, the Daśārha, and deliberated once more.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
त्वया नागपुरं गत्वा सभायां धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
किमुक्तः पुण्डरीकाक्ष तन्नः शंसितुमर्हसि ॥५॥
5. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
tvayā nāgapuraṁ gatvā sabhāyāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
kimuktaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa tannaḥ śaṁsitumarhasi.
5. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca tvayā nāgapuram gatvā sabhāyām
dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ kim uktaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa tat naḥ śaṃsitum arhasi
5. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: puṇḍarīkākṣa,
tvayā nāgapuram gatvā sabhāyām dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ kim uktaḥ? tat naḥ śaṃsitum arhasi.
5. Yudhishthira said: O lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), what did you say to Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana) when you went to Hastinapura in the assembly? You ought to tell us that.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
मया नागपुरं गत्वा सभायां धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
तथ्यं पथ्यं हितं चोक्तो न च गृह्णाति दुर्मतिः ॥६॥
6. vāsudeva uvāca ,
mayā nāgapuraṁ gatvā sabhāyāṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
tathyaṁ pathyaṁ hitaṁ cokto na ca gṛhṇāti durmatiḥ.
6. vāsudeva uvāca mayā nāgapuram gatvā sabhāyām dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
tathyām pathyam hitam ca uktaḥ na ca gṛhṇāti durmatiḥ
6. vāsudeva uvāca: mayā nāgapuram gatvā sabhāyām dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ tathyām pathyam hitam ca uktaḥ,
ca durmatiḥ na gṛhṇāti.
6. Vasudeva said: Having gone to Hastinapura, I spoke to Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana) in the assembly what was true, wholesome, and beneficial; but that evil-minded one does not accept it.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
तस्मिन्नुत्पथमापन्ने कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः ।
किमुक्तवान्हृषीकेश दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
आचार्यो वा महाबाहो भारद्वाजः किमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
tasminnutpathamāpanne kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ ,
kimuktavānhṛṣīkeśa duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
ācāryo vā mahābāho bhāradvājaḥ kimabravīt.
7. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca tasmin utpatham āpanne
kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ kim uktavān
hṛṣīkeśa duryodhanam amarṣaṇam ācāryaḥ

7. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: hṛṣīkeśa,
tasmin utpatham āpanne,
kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ amarṣaṇam duryodhanam kim uktavān? vā mahābāho,
ācāryaḥ bhāradvājaḥ kim abravīt?
7. Yudhishthira said: O Hrishikesha (hṛṣīkeśa), when he (Duryodhana) had adopted the wrong path, what did the elder of the Kurus, the grandsire (Bhishma), say to that impatient Duryodhana? Or, O mighty-armed one, what did the preceptor, Drona (Bhāradvāja), say?
पिता यवीयानस्माकं क्षत्ता धर्मभृतां वरः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः किमाह धृतराष्ट्रजम् ॥८॥
8. pitā yavīyānasmākaṁ kṣattā dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptaḥ kimāha dhṛtarāṣṭrajam.
8. pitā yavīyāḥ asmākam kṣattā dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
putraśokābhisantaptaḥ kim āha dhṛtarāṣṭrajam
8. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: asmākam yavīyāḥ pitā,
kṣattā,
dharmabhṛtām varaḥ,
putraśokābhisantaptaḥ (saḥ) dhṛtarāṣṭrajam kim āha?
8. Yudhishthira said: What did our younger father (uncle), Vidura (Kṣattā), the best among the upholders of (dharma), who was intensely afflicted by sorrow concerning sons, say to Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana)?
किं च सर्वे नृपतयः सभायां ये समासते ।
उक्तवन्तो यथातत्त्वं तद्ब्रूहि त्वं जनार्दन ॥९॥
9. kiṁ ca sarve nṛpatayaḥ sabhāyāṁ ye samāsate ,
uktavanto yathātattvaṁ tadbrūhi tvaṁ janārdana.
9. kim ca sarve nṛpatayaḥ sabhāyām ye samāsate
uktavantaḥ yathātattvam tat brūhi tvam janārdana
9. janārdana kim ca tvam brūhi tat yathātattvam
uktavantaḥ ye sarve nṛpatayaḥ sabhāyām samāsate
9. O Janardana (janārdana), what's more, please tell me truthfully what all the kings who are assembled in the court have said.
उक्तवान्हि भवान्सर्वं वचनं कुरुमुख्ययोः ।
कामलोभाभिभूतस्य मन्दस्य प्राज्ञमानिनः ॥१०॥
10. uktavānhi bhavānsarvaṁ vacanaṁ kurumukhyayoḥ ,
kāmalobhābhibhūtasya mandasya prājñamāninaḥ.
10. uktavān hi bhavān sarvam vacanam kuramukhyayoḥ
kāmalobhābhibhūtasya mandasya prājñamāninaḥ
10. hi bhavān kuramukhyayoḥ sarvam vacanam uktavān
kāmalobhābhibhūtasya mandasya prājñamāninaḥ
10. Indeed, you have spoken every word to the principal Kauravas, addressing the dull-witted one who is overwhelmed by desire (kāma) and greed (lobha) and considers himself wise.
अप्रियं हृदये मह्यं तन्न तिष्ठति केशव ।
तेषां वाक्यानि गोविन्द श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं विभो ॥११॥
11. apriyaṁ hṛdaye mahyaṁ tanna tiṣṭhati keśava ,
teṣāṁ vākyāni govinda śrotumicchāmyahaṁ vibho.
11. apriyam hṛdaye mahyam tat na tiṣṭhati keśava
teṣām vākyāni govinda śrotum icchāmi aham vibho
11. keśava tat apriyam mahyam hṛdaye na tiṣṭhati
govinda vibho aham teṣām vākyāni śrotum icchāmi
11. O Keshava (keśava), that unpleasantness does not stay in my heart. O Govinda (govinda), O mighty lord (vibhu), I wish to hear their (the kings') statements.
यथा च नाभिपद्येत कालस्तात तथा कुरु ।
भवान्हि नो गतिः कृष्ण भवान्नाथो भवान्गुरुः ॥१२॥
12. yathā ca nābhipadyeta kālastāta tathā kuru ,
bhavānhi no gatiḥ kṛṣṇa bhavānnātho bhavānguruḥ.
12. yathā ca na abhipadyeta kālaḥ tāta tathā kuru bhavān
hi naḥ gatiḥ kṛṣṇa bhavān nāthaḥ bhavān guruḥ
12. tāta ca yathā kālaḥ na abhipadyeta tathā kuru kṛṣṇa
hi bhavān naḥ gatiḥ bhavān nāthaḥ bhavān guruḥ
12. And, O dear one (tāta), please act so that time is not wasted (or, delay does not occur). Indeed, O Krishna (kṛṣṇa), you are our ultimate resort (gati), you are our protector, and you are our teacher (guru).
वासुदेव उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्यथा वाक्यमुक्तो राजा सुयोधनः ।
मध्ये कुरूणां राजेन्द्र सभायां तन्निबोध मे ॥१३॥
13. vāsudeva uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanyathā vākyamukto rājā suyodhanaḥ ,
madhye kurūṇāṁ rājendra sabhāyāṁ tannibodha me.
13. vāsudevaḥ uvāca śṛṇu rājan yathā vākyam uktaḥ rājā
suyodhanaḥ madhye kurūṇām rājendra sabhāyām tat nibodha me
13. rājan rājendra śṛṇu me yathā rājā suyodhanaḥ
kurūṇām madhye sabhāyām vākyam uktaḥ tat nibodha
13. Vāsudeva said, "O King, listen to me how King Suyodhana was addressed in the assembly among the Kurus, O best of kings. Understand that from me."
मया वै श्राविते वाक्ये जहास धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
अथ भीष्मः सुसंक्रुद्ध इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. mayā vai śrāvite vākye jahāsa dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
atha bhīṣmaḥ susaṁkruddha idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
14. mayā vai śrāvire vākye jahāsa dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
atha bhīṣmaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
14. mayā vai vākye śrāvire dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ jahāsa
atha susaṃkruddhaḥ bhīṣmaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
14. Indeed, when I made the statement known, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son laughed. Then Bhīṣma, greatly enraged, spoke these words.
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं कुलार्थे यद्ब्रवीमि ते ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा राजशार्दूल स्वकुलस्य हितं कुरु ॥१५॥
15. duryodhana nibodhedaṁ kulārthe yadbravīmi te ,
tacchrutvā rājaśārdūla svakulasya hitaṁ kuru.
15. duryodhana nibodha idam kulārthe yat bravīmi te
tat śrutvā rājaśārdūla svakulasya hitam kuru
15. duryodhana te kulārthe yat bravīmi idam nibodha
rājaśārdūla tat śrutvā svakulasya hitam kuru
15. O Duryodhana, understand this that I tell you for the sake of the family. Having heard that, O tiger among kings, do what is beneficial for your own family.
मम तात पिता राजञ्शंतनुर्लोकविश्रुतः ।
तस्याहमेक एवासं पुत्रः पुत्रवतां वरः ॥१६॥
16. mama tāta pitā rājañśaṁtanurlokaviśrutaḥ ,
tasyāhameka evāsaṁ putraḥ putravatāṁ varaḥ.
16. mama tāta pitā rājan śantanuḥ lokaviśrutaḥ
tasya aham ekaḥ eva āsam putraḥ putravatām varaḥ
16. tāta rājan mama pitā lokaviśrutaḥ śantanuḥ (āsa)
tasya aham ekaḥ eva putraḥ putravatām varaḥ āsam
16. O dear one, O King, my father was Śantanu, renowned throughout the world. I was his only son, the foremost among those who had sons.
तस्य बुद्धिः समुत्पन्ना द्वितीयः स्यात्कथं सुतः ।
एकपुत्रमपुत्रं वै प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥१७॥
17. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā dvitīyaḥ syātkathaṁ sutaḥ ,
ekaputramaputraṁ vai pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ.
17. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā dvitīyaḥ syāt kathaṃ
sutaḥ ekaputram aputraṃ vai pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ
17. tasya buddhiḥ samutpannā,
kathaṃ dvitīyaḥ sutaḥ syāt? manīṣiṇaḥ ekaputram aputraṃ vai pravadanti.
17. A thought arose in his mind: "How can there be a second son?" For wise persons (manīṣiṇaḥ) indeed declare that a man with only one son is as good as sonless.
न चोच्छेदं कुलं यायाद्विस्तीर्येत कथं यशः ।
तस्याहमीप्सितं बुद्ध्वा कालीं मातरमावहम् ॥१८॥
18. na cocchedaṁ kulaṁ yāyādvistīryeta kathaṁ yaśaḥ ,
tasyāhamīpsitaṁ buddhvā kālīṁ mātaramāvaham.
18. na ca ucchedaṃ kulaṃ yāyāt vistīryeta kathaṃ yaśaḥ
tasya ahaṃ īpsitaṃ buddhvā kālīṃ mātaram āvaham
18. na ca kulaṃ ucchedaṃ yāyāt,
kathaṃ yaśaḥ vistīryeta? tasya īpsitaṃ buddhvā ahaṃ kālīṃ mātaram āvaham.
18. "Nor should my lineage (kulaṃ) become extinct, and how would my fame (yaśaḥ) spread?" Having understood his desire (īpsitam), I brought his mother, Kālī.
प्रतिज्ञां दुष्करां कृत्वा पितुरर्थे कुलस्य च ।
अराजा चोर्ध्वरेताश्च यथा सुविदितं तव ।
प्रतीतो निवसाम्येष प्रतिज्ञामनुपालयन् ॥१९॥
19. pratijñāṁ duṣkarāṁ kṛtvā piturarthe kulasya ca ,
arājā cordhvaretāśca yathā suviditaṁ tava ,
pratīto nivasāmyeṣa pratijñāmanupālayan.
19. pratijñāṃ duṣkarāṃ kṛtvā pituḥ arthe
kulasya ca arājā ca ūrdhvaretāḥ
ca yathā suviditaṃ tava pratītaḥ
nivasāmi eṣaḥ pratijñāṃ anupālayan
19. pituḥ kulasya ca arthe duṣkarāṃ pratijñāṃ kṛtvā,
yathā tava suviditaṃ (aham) arājā ca ūrdhvaretāḥ ca,
eṣaḥ (ahaṃ) pratītaḥ pratijñāṃ anupālayan nivasāmi.
19. Having made a difficult vow for the sake of my father and my lineage (kulaṃ), and being without a kingdom and one who has mastered celibacy (ūrdhvaretas) – as is well known to you – I, contented, reside here, upholding my vow.
तस्यां जज्ञे महाबाहुः श्रीमान्कुरुकुलोद्वहः ।
विचित्रवीर्यो धर्मात्मा कनीयान्मम पार्थिवः ॥२०॥
20. tasyāṁ jajñe mahābāhuḥ śrīmānkurukulodvahaḥ ,
vicitravīryo dharmātmā kanīyānmama pārthivaḥ.
20. tasyāṃ jajñe mahābāhuḥ śrīmān kurukulodvahaḥ
vicitravīryaḥ dharmātmā kanīyān mama pārthivaḥ
20. tasyāṃ mahābāhuḥ śrīmān kurukulodvahaḥ dharmātmā mama kanīyān pārthivaḥ vicitravīryaḥ jajñe.
20. From her, was born the glorious, mighty-armed upholder of the Kuru lineage (kulaṃ), Vichitravīrya, who was virtuous (dharmātmā) and my younger brother, the king (pārthivaḥ).
स्वर्यातेऽहं पितरि तं स्वराज्ये संन्यवेशयम् ।
विचित्रवीर्यं राजानं भृत्यो भूत्वा ह्यधश्चरः ॥२१॥
21. svaryāte'haṁ pitari taṁ svarājye saṁnyaveśayam ,
vicitravīryaṁ rājānaṁ bhṛtyo bhūtvā hyadhaścaraḥ.
21. svaryāte aham pitari tam svarājye saṃnyaveśayam
vicitravīryam rājānam bhṛtyaḥ bhūtvā hi adhaścaraḥ
21. aham pitari svaryāte tam vicitravīryam rājānam
svarājye saṃnyaveśayam hi bhṛtyaḥ bhūtvā adhaścaraḥ
21. When my father departed for heaven (svarga), I installed King Vicitravīrya in his own kingdom. Indeed, I became his servant, following his commands.
तस्याहं सदृशान्दारान्राजेन्द्र समुदावहम् ।
जित्वा पार्थिवसंघातमपि ते बहुशः श्रुतम् ॥२२॥
22. tasyāhaṁ sadṛśāndārānrājendra samudāvaham ,
jitvā pārthivasaṁghātamapi te bahuśaḥ śrutam.
22. tasya aham sadṛśān dārān rājendra samudāvaham
jitvā pārthivasaṃghātam api te bahuśaḥ śrutam
22. rājendra aham tasya sadṛśān dārān pārthivasaṃghātam
jitvā samudāvaham te api bahuśaḥ śrutam
22. O king of kings, I brought him (Vicitravīrya) suitable wives, having conquered a multitude of kings. You have certainly heard this many times.
ततो रामेण समरे द्वन्द्वयुद्धमुपागमम् ।
स हि रामभयादेभिर्नागरैर्विप्रवासितः ।
दारेष्वतिप्रसक्तश्च यक्ष्माणं समपद्यत ॥२३॥
23. tato rāmeṇa samare dvandvayuddhamupāgamam ,
sa hi rāmabhayādebhirnāgarairvipravāsitaḥ ,
dāreṣvatiprasaktaśca yakṣmāṇaṁ samapadyata.
23. tataḥ rāmeṇa samare dvandvayuddham
upāgamam saḥ hi rāmabhayāt ebhiḥ
nāgaraiḥ vipravāsitaḥ dāreṣu
atiprasaktaḥ ca yakṣmāṇam samapadyata
23. tataḥ aham rāmeṇa samare dvandvayuddham
upāgamam hi saḥ rāmabhayāt
ebhiḥ nāgaraiḥ vipravāsitaḥ ca dāreṣu
atiprasaktaḥ yakṣmāṇam samapadyata
23. Then I engaged in a duel with Paraśurāma in battle. Indeed, he (Vicitravīrya) was banished by these citizens out of fear of Paraśurāma. And, being excessively attached to women, he contracted consumption.
यदा त्वराजके राष्ट्रे न ववर्ष सुरेश्वरः ।
तदाभ्यधावन्मामेव प्रजाः क्षुद्भयपीडिताः ॥२४॥
24. yadā tvarājake rāṣṭre na vavarṣa sureśvaraḥ ,
tadābhyadhāvanmāmeva prajāḥ kṣudbhayapīḍitāḥ.
24. yadā tu arājake rāṣṭre na vavarṣa sureśvaraḥ
tadā abhyadhāvan mām eva prajāḥ kṣudbhayapīḍitāḥ
24. yadā tu rāṣṭre arājake sureśvaraḥ na vavarṣa
tadā kṣudbhayapīḍitāḥ prajāḥ mām eva abhyadhāvan
24. But when the lord of gods (Indra) did not send rain upon the kingdom that was without a ruler, then the subjects, afflicted by hunger and fear, ran to me alone.
प्रजा ऊचुः ।
उपक्षीणाः प्रजाः सर्वा राजा भव भवाय नः ।
ईतयो नुद भद्रं ते शंतनोः कुलवर्धन ॥२५॥
25. prajā ūcuḥ ,
upakṣīṇāḥ prajāḥ sarvā rājā bhava bhavāya naḥ ,
ītayo nuda bhadraṁ te śaṁtanoḥ kulavardhana.
25. prajāḥ ūcuḥ | upakṣīṇāḥ prajāḥ sarvāḥ rājā bhava bhavāya
naḥ | ītayaḥ nuda bhadraṃ te śantanoḥ kulavardhana
25. śantanoḥ kulavardhana sarvāḥ prajāḥ upakṣīṇāḥ (santi)
naḥ bhavāya rājā bhava ītayaḥ nuda te bhadraṃ (astu)
25. The citizens said: "All the citizens are perishing. Be our king for our well-being. Drive away calamities. May prosperity be yours, O enhancer of Śantanu's lineage."
पीड्यन्ते ते प्रजाः सर्वा व्याधिभिर्भृशदारुणैः ।
अल्पावशिष्टा गाङ्गेय ताः परित्रातुमर्हसि ॥२६॥
26. pīḍyante te prajāḥ sarvā vyādhibhirbhṛśadāruṇaiḥ ,
alpāvaśiṣṭā gāṅgeya tāḥ paritrātumarhasi.
26. pīḍyante te prajāḥ sarvāḥ vyādhibhiḥ bhṛśadāruṇaiḥ
| alpāvaśiṣṭāḥ gāṅgeya tāḥ paritrātum arhasi
26. gāṅgeya te sarvāḥ prajāḥ bhṛśadāruṇaiḥ vyādhibhiḥ
pīḍyante alpāvaśiṣṭāḥ (santi) tāḥ paritrātum arhasi
26. All your citizens are tormented by extremely terrible diseases. Only a few remain, O Gāṅgeya, you ought to protect them.
व्याधीन्प्रणुद्य वीर त्वं प्रजा धर्मेण पालय ।
त्वयि जीवति मा राष्ट्रं विनाशमुपगच्छतु ॥२७॥
27. vyādhīnpraṇudya vīra tvaṁ prajā dharmeṇa pālaya ,
tvayi jīvati mā rāṣṭraṁ vināśamupagacchatu.

27. vīra,
tvaṃ vyādhīn praṇudya dharmeṇa prajāḥ pālaya tvayi jīvati rāṣṭraṃ vināśam mā upagacchatu
27. O hero, having driven away the diseases, protect the citizens according to (dharma) natural law. While you live, let the kingdom not fall into ruin.
भीष्म उवाच ।
प्रजानां क्रोशतीनां वै नैवाक्षुभ्यत मे मनः ।
प्रतिज्ञां रक्षमाणस्य सद्वृत्तं स्मरतस्तथा ॥२८॥
28. bhīṣma uvāca ,
prajānāṁ krośatīnāṁ vai naivākṣubhyata me manaḥ ,
pratijñāṁ rakṣamāṇasya sadvṛttaṁ smaratastathā.
28. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca | prajānāṃ krośatīnāṃ vai na eva akṣubhyata
me manaḥ | pratijñām rakṣamāṇasya sadvṛttaṃ smaratas tathā
28. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca vai,
pratijñām rakṣamāṇasya tathā sadvṛttaṃ smaratas (mama) krośatīnāṃ prajānāṃ (nimittam) me manaḥ na eva akṣubhyata
28. Bhīṣma said: "Indeed, my mind was not at all disturbed by the lamenting citizens, as I was protecting my vow and also remembering my good conduct."
ततः पौरा महाराज माता काली च मे शुभा ।
भृत्याः पुरोहिताचार्या ब्राह्मणाश्च बहुश्रुताः ।
मामूचुर्भृशसंतप्ता भव राजेति संततम् ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ paurā mahārāja mātā kālī ca me śubhā ,
bhṛtyāḥ purohitācāryā brāhmaṇāśca bahuśrutāḥ ,
māmūcurbhṛśasaṁtaptā bhava rājeti saṁtatam.
29. tataḥ paurāḥ mahārāja mātā kālī ca
me śubhā bhṛtyāḥ purohitācāryāḥ
brāhmaṇāḥ ca bahuśrutāḥ mām ūcuḥ

ca paurāḥ bhṛtyāḥ purohitācāryāḥ ca
bahuśrutāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ bhṛśasaṃtaptāḥ
mām rājā bhava iti saṃtatam ūcuḥ
29. Then, O great king, the citizens, my auspicious mother Kali, the servants, the royal priests and teachers, and the highly learned Brahmins, all exceedingly distressed, repeatedly told me, 'Be king!'
प्रतीपरक्षितं राष्ट्रं त्वां प्राप्य विनशिष्यति ।
स त्वमस्मद्धितार्थं वै राजा भव महामते ॥३०॥
30. pratīparakṣitaṁ rāṣṭraṁ tvāṁ prāpya vinaśiṣyati ,
sa tvamasmaddhitārthaṁ vai rājā bhava mahāmate.
30. pratīparakṣitam rāṣṭram tvām prāpya vinaśiṣyati
saḥ tvam asmadhitārtham vai rājā bhava mahāmate
30. mahāmate pratīparakṣitam rāṣṭram tvām prāpya
vinaśiṣyati saḥ tvam asmadhitārtham vai rājā bhava
30. The kingdom, formerly protected by Pratipa, will perish now that it has come to you (and you refuse to rule). Therefore, O wise one, for our benefit, indeed become king!
इत्युक्तः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा दुःखितो भृशमातुरः ।
तेभ्यो न्यवेदयं पुत्र प्रतिज्ञां पितृगौरवात् ।
ऊर्ध्वरेता ह्यराजा च कुलस्यार्थे पुनः पुनः ॥३१॥
31. ityuktaḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā duḥkhito bhṛśamāturaḥ ,
tebhyo nyavedayaṁ putra pratijñāṁ pitṛgauravāt ,
ūrdhvaretā hyarājā ca kulasyārthe punaḥ punaḥ.
31. iti uktaḥ prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā duḥkhitaḥ
bhṛśam āturaḥ tebhyaḥ nyavedayam putra
pratijñām pitṛgauravāt ūrdhvaretāḥ
hi arājā ca kulasya arthe punaḥ punaḥ
31. putra iti uktaḥ duḥkhitaḥ bhṛśam āturaḥ
prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā tebhyaḥ pitṛgauravāt
pratijñām nyavedayam hi kulasya
arthe ūrdhvaretāḥ ca arājā punaḥ punaḥ
31. O son, thus addressed, I became distressed and exceedingly agitated. With folded hands, I conveyed my vow to them, made out of reverence for my father. For the sake of the family, indeed, I am celibate (ūrdhvaretas) and not a king, I repeated this again and again.
ततोऽहं प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा मातरं संप्रसादयम् ।
नाम्ब शंतनुना जातः कौरवं वंशमुद्वहन् ।
प्रतिज्ञां वितथां कुर्यामिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥३२॥
32. tato'haṁ prāñjalirbhūtvā mātaraṁ saṁprasādayam ,
nāmba śaṁtanunā jātaḥ kauravaṁ vaṁśamudvahan ,
pratijñāṁ vitathāṁ kuryāmiti rājanpunaḥ punaḥ.
32. tataḥ aham prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā mātaram
saṃprasādayam na amba śaṃtanunā jātaḥ
kauravam vaṃśam udvahan pratijñām
vitathām kuryām iti rājan punaḥ punaḥ
32. rājan tataḥ aham prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā
mātaram saṃprasādayam amba śaṃtanunā
jātaḥ kauravam vaṃśam udvahan pratijñām
vitathām na kuryām iti punaḥ punaḥ
32. Then I, with folded hands, appealed to my mother, 'O mother, how could I, born of Shantanu and upholding the Kuru dynasty, make my vow false?' Thus, O king, I repeatedly stated.
विशेषतस्त्वदर्थं च धुरि मा मां नियोजय ।
अहं प्रेष्यश्च दासश्च तवाम्ब सुतवत्सले ॥३३॥
33. viśeṣatastvadarthaṁ ca dhuri mā māṁ niyojaya ,
ahaṁ preṣyaśca dāsaśca tavāmba sutavatsale.
33. viśeṣataḥ tvadartham ca dhuri mā mām niyojaya
aham preṣyaḥ ca dāsaḥ ca tava amba sutavatsale
33. amba sutavatsale viśeṣataḥ tvadartham ca mām
dhuri mā niyojaya aham tava preṣyaḥ ca dāsaḥ ca
33. Especially for your sake, O Mother, who are affectionate to your son, do not appoint me to this responsibility. I am your servant and your slave.
एवं तामनुनीयाहं मातरं जनमेव च ।
अयाचं भ्रातृदारेषु तदा व्यासं महामुनिम् ॥३४॥
34. evaṁ tāmanunīyāhaṁ mātaraṁ janameva ca ,
ayācaṁ bhrātṛdāreṣu tadā vyāsaṁ mahāmunim.
34. evam tām anunīya aham mātaram janam eva ca
ayācam bhrātṛdāreṣu tadā vyāsam mahāmunim
34. evam aham tām mātaram janam eva ca anunīya
tadā bhrātṛdāreṣu mahāmunim vyāsam ayācam
34. Thus, having appeased her, my mother, and also the people, I then made a request to the great sage Vyasa regarding my brothers' wives.
सह मात्रा महाराज प्रसाद्य तमृषिं तदा ।
अपत्यार्थमयाचं वै प्रसादं कृतवांश्च सः ।
त्रीन्स पुत्रानजनयत्तदा भरतसत्तम ॥३५॥
35. saha mātrā mahārāja prasādya tamṛṣiṁ tadā ,
apatyārthamayācaṁ vai prasādaṁ kṛtavāṁśca saḥ ,
trīnsa putrānajanayattadā bharatasattama.
35. saha mātrā mahārāja prasādya tam
ṛṣim tadā apatyārtham ayācam vai
prasādam kṛtavān ca saḥ trīn
putrān ajanayat tadā bharatasattama
35. mahārāja bharatasattama tadā mātrā
saha tam ṛṣim prasādya vai
apatyārtham prasādam ayācam ca saḥ
kṛtavān tadā saḥ trīn putrān ajanayat
35. O great king (mahārāja), then, along with my mother, having propitiated that sage, I indeed requested a boon for offspring. And he granted that favor. Then, O best of Bharatas (bharatasattama), he begot three sons.
अन्धः करणहीनेति न वै राजा पिता तव ।
राजा तु पाण्डुरभवन्महात्मा लोकविश्रुतः ॥३६॥
36. andhaḥ karaṇahīneti na vai rājā pitā tava ,
rājā tu pāṇḍurabhavanmahātmā lokaviśrutaḥ.
36. andhaḥ karaṇahīnaḥ iti na vai rājā pitā tava
rājā tu pāṇḍuḥ abhavat mahātmā lokaviśrutaḥ
36. tava pitā andhaḥ karaṇahīnaḥ iti vai rājā na
tu rājā mahātmā lokaviśrutaḥ pāṇḍuḥ abhavat
36. Your father, being blind and deficient in senses, was indeed not the king. But King Pandu, the noble-souled (mahātmā) and world-renowned, became the ruler.
स राजा तस्य ते पुत्राः पितुर्दायाद्यहारिणः ।
मा तात कलहं कार्षी राज्यस्यार्धं प्रदीयताम् ॥३७॥
37. sa rājā tasya te putrāḥ piturdāyādyahāriṇaḥ ,
mā tāta kalahaṁ kārṣī rājyasyārdhaṁ pradīyatām.
37. sa rājā tasya te putrāḥ pituḥ dāyādyahāriṇaḥ mā
tāta kalaham kārṣīḥ rājyasya ardham pradīyatām
37. tāta sa rājā tasya te putrāḥ pituḥ dāyādyahāriṇaḥ
(santi) kalaham mā kārṣīḥ rājyasya ardham pradīyatām
37. That king (Pāṇḍu), and those sons of his are the inheritors of their father's patrimony. My dear one, do not cause a quarrel. Let half of the kingdom be given.
मयि जीवति राज्यं कः संप्रशासेत्पुमानिह ।
मावमंस्था वचो मह्यं शममिच्छामि वः सदा ॥३८॥
38. mayi jīvati rājyaṁ kaḥ saṁpraśāsetpumāniha ,
māvamaṁsthā vaco mahyaṁ śamamicchāmi vaḥ sadā.
38. mayi jīvati rājyam kaḥ sampraśāset pumān iha mā
avamaṃsthāḥ vacaḥ mahyam śamam icchāmi vaḥ sadā
38. mayi jīvati,
iha kaḥ pumān rājyam sampraśāset? mahyam vacaḥ mā avamaṃsthāḥ.
vaḥ sadā śamam icchāmi.
38. While I am alive, what man (puruṣa) here could properly govern the kingdom? Do not disregard my advice. I always desire peace for you all.
न विशेषोऽस्ति मे पुत्र त्वयि तेषु च पार्थिव ।
मतमेतत्पितुस्तुभ्यं गान्धार्या विदुरस्य च ॥३९॥
39. na viśeṣo'sti me putra tvayi teṣu ca pārthiva ,
matametatpitustubhyaṁ gāndhāryā vidurasya ca.
39. na viśeṣaḥ asti me putra tvayi teṣu ca pārthiva
matam etat pituḥ tubhyam gāndhāryāḥ vidurasya ca
39. putra,
pārthiva! me tvayi teṣu ca viśeṣaḥ na asti.
etat matam pituḥ gāndhāryāḥ vidurasya ca tubhyam (astīti)
39. O son (putra), O King (pārthiva)! For me, there is no distinction between you and them (the Pāṇḍavas). This is the opinion of your revered father (Bhīṣma), Gāndhārī, and Vidura as well.
श्रोतव्यं यदि वृद्धानां मातिशङ्कीर्वचो मम ।
नाशयिष्यसि मा सर्वमात्मानं पृथिवीं तथा ॥४०॥
40. śrotavyaṁ yadi vṛddhānāṁ mātiśaṅkīrvaco mama ,
nāśayiṣyasi mā sarvamātmānaṁ pṛthivīṁ tathā.
40. śrotavyam yadi vṛddhānām mā atiśaṅkīḥ vacaḥ mama
nāśayiṣyasi mā sarvam ātmānam pṛthivīm tathā
40. yadi vṛddhānām vacaḥ śrotavyam (asti),
(taddhi) mama vacaḥ mā atiśaṅkīḥ.
(anyathā tvam) mā sarvam ātmānam tathā pṛthivīm (ca) nāśayiṣyasi.
40. If the words of elders should be heard, then do not unduly distrust my advice. (Otherwise) you will destroy me, everything, yourself (ātman), and the earth as well.
