श्वोभूते किमकार्षुस्ते दुःखशोकसमन्विताः ।
अभिमन्यौ हते तत्र के वायुध्यन्त मामकाः ॥१॥

1. Dhritarashtra said: "On the following day, after Abhimanyu was killed there, what did they, overcome with sorrow and grief, do? And who among my warriors fought against them?"
जानन्तस्तस्य कर्माणि कुरवः सव्यसाचिनः ।
कथं तत्किल्बिषं कृत्वा निर्भया ब्रूहि मामकाः ॥२॥
2. jānantastasya karmāṇi kuravaḥ savyasācinaḥ ,
kathaṁ tatkilbiṣaṁ kṛtvā nirbhayā brūhi māmakāḥ.

2. "Knowing the deeds of Arjuna (savyasācin), how did my Kurus remain fearless after committing that sin? Tell me!"
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तं क्रुद्धं मृत्युमिवान्तकम् ।
आयान्तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं कथं ददृशुराहवे ॥३॥
3. putraśokābhisaṁtaptaṁ kruddhaṁ mṛtyumivāntakam ,
āyāntaṁ puruṣavyāghraṁ kathaṁ dadṛśurāhave.

3. "How did they (my warriors) confront in battle the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) who was approaching, greatly tormented and enraged by grief for his son, like Death (mṛtyu) itself, the Destroyer (antaka)?"
कपिराजध्वजं संख्ये विधुन्वानं महद्धनुः ।
दृष्ट्वा पुत्रपरिद्यूनं किमकुर्वन्त मामकाः ॥४॥
4. kapirājadhvajaṁ saṁkhye vidhunvānaṁ mahaddhanuḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā putraparidyūnaṁ kimakurvanta māmakāḥ.
4. dṛṣṭvā putraparidyūnam kapirājadhavajam saṅkhye
vidhunvānam mahat dhanuḥ | kim akurvanta māmakāḥ

4. "After seeing the one with the monkey-king banner (kapirājadhavaja), who was greatly distressed by his son's death and was wielding his mighty bow in battle, what did my warriors do?"
किं नु संजय संग्रामे वृत्तं दुर्योधनं प्रति ।
परिदेवो महानत्र श्रुतो मे नाभिनन्दनम् ॥५॥
5. kiṁ nu saṁjaya saṁgrāme vṛttaṁ duryodhanaṁ prati ,
paridevo mahānatra śruto me nābhinandanam.
5. kim nu saṃjaya saṃgrāme vṛttam duryodhanam prati
| paridevaḥ mahān atra śrutaḥ me na abhinandanam
5. saṃjaya nu saṃgrāme duryodhanam prati kim vṛttam

5. O Saṃjaya, what indeed has happened to Duryodhana in the battle? I have heard only great lamentation here, not any joyful celebration.
बभूवुर्ये मनोग्राह्याः शब्दाः श्रुतिसुखावहाः ।
न श्रूयन्तेऽद्य ते सर्वे सैन्धवस्य निवेशने ॥६॥
6. babhūvurye manogrāhyāḥ śabdāḥ śrutisukhāvahāḥ ,
na śrūyante'dya te sarve saindhavasya niveśane.
6. babhūvuḥ ye manogrāhyāḥ śabdāḥ śrutisukhāvahāḥ |
na śrūyante adya te sarve saindhavasya niveśane
6. ye manogrāhyāḥ śrutisukhāvahāḥ śabdāḥ babhūvuḥ
te sarve adya saindhavasya niveśane na śrūyante
6. Those captivating sounds that were pleasing to the ear are no longer heard today, all of them, in the camp of the Sindhu king (Saindhava).
स्तुवतां नाद्य श्रूयन्ते पुत्राणां शिबिरे मम ।
सूतमागधसंघानां नर्तकानां च सर्वशः ॥७॥
7. stuvatāṁ nādya śrūyante putrāṇāṁ śibire mama ,
sūtamāgadhasaṁghānāṁ nartakānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
7. stuvatām na adya śrūyante putrāṇām śibire mama
| sūtamāgadhasaṅghānām nartakānām ca sarvaśaḥ
7. adya mama putrāṇām śibire stuvatām sūtamāgadhasaṅghānām

7. Today, in my sons' camp, the praises of the bards and panegyrists (sūta and māgadha) and all the dancers are not heard.
शब्देन नादिताभीक्ष्णमभवद्यत्र मे श्रुतिः ।
दीनानामद्य तं शब्दं न शृणोमि समीरितम् ॥८॥
8. śabdena nāditābhīkṣṇamabhavadyatra me śrutiḥ ,
dīnānāmadya taṁ śabdaṁ na śṛṇomi samīritam.
8. śabdena nāditā abhīkṣṇam abhavat yatra me śrutiḥ
| dīnānām adya tam śabdam na śṛṇomi samīritam
8. yatra me śrutiḥ śabdena abhīkṣṇam nāditā abhavat
adya dīnānām samīritam tam śabdam na śṛṇomi
8. Today, I do not hear that sound, uttered by the lamenting ones, in the place where my hearing was previously often filled with sound.
निवेशने सत्यधृतेः सोमदत्तस्य संजय ।
आसीनोऽहं पुरा तात शब्दमश्रौषमुत्तमम् ॥९॥
9. niveśane satyadhṛteḥ somadattasya saṁjaya ,
āsīno'haṁ purā tāta śabdamaśrauṣamuttamam.

āsīnaḥ aham purā tāta śabdam aśrauṣam uttamam

9. O Sañjaya, O dear one, I once heard a glorious sound while sitting in the residence of Somadatta, the son of Satyadhṛti.
तदद्य हीनपुण्योऽहमार्तस्वरनिनादितम् ।
निवेशनं हतोत्साहं पुत्राणां मम लक्षये ॥१०॥
10. tadadya hīnapuṇyo'hamārtasvaranināditam ,
niveśanaṁ hatotsāhaṁ putrāṇāṁ mama lakṣaye.
10. tat adya hīnapuṇyaḥ aham ārtasvaranināditam
niveśanam hatotsāham putrāṇām mama lakṣaye
10. tat adya aham hīnapuṇyaḥ mama putrāṇām
niveśanam ārtasvaranināditam hatotsāham lakṣaye
10. Therefore, today, I, whose accumulated merit (puṇya) has dwindled, perceive my sons' residence resonating with cries of pain and utterly devoid of enthusiasm.
विविंशतेर्दुर्मुखस्य चित्रसेनविकर्णयोः ।
अन्येषां च सुतानां मे न तथा श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥११॥
11. viviṁśaterdurmukhasya citrasenavikarṇayoḥ ,
anyeṣāṁ ca sutānāṁ me na tathā śrūyate dhvaniḥ.
11. viviṃśateḥ durmukhasya citrasenavikarṇayoḥ
anyeṣām ca sutānām me na tathā śrūyate dhvaniḥ
11. viviṃśateḥ durmukhasya citrasenavikarṇayoḥ ca
me anyeṣām sutānām dhvaniḥ tathā na śrūyate
11. The voices of Viviṃśati, Durmukha, Citrasena, Vikarṇa, and my other sons are no longer heard in the glorious manner they once were.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या यं शिष्याः पर्युपासते ।
द्रोणपुत्रं महेष्वासं पुत्राणां मे परायणम् ॥१२॥
12. brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyā yaṁ śiṣyāḥ paryupāsate ,
droṇaputraṁ maheṣvāsaṁ putrāṇāṁ me parāyaṇam.
12. brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyāḥ vaiśyāḥ yam śiṣyāḥ paryupāsate
droṇaputram maheṣvāsam putrāṇām me parāyaṇam
12. yam brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyāḥ vaiśyāḥ śiṣyāḥ paryupāsate
droṇaputram maheṣvāsam me putrāṇām parāyaṇam
12. He whom Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, along with their disciples, attend upon—that son of Droṇa, the great archer, who is the ultimate refuge (parāyaṇa) for my sons.
वितण्डालापसंलापैर्हुतयाचितवन्दितैः ।
गीतैश्च विविधैरिष्टै रमते यो दिवानिशम् ॥१३॥
13. vitaṇḍālāpasaṁlāpairhutayācitavanditaiḥ ,
gītaiśca vividhairiṣṭai ramate yo divāniśam.
13. vitaṇḍālāpasaṃlāpaiḥ huta yācita vanditaiḥ
gītaiḥ ca vividhaiḥ iṣṭaiḥ ramate yaḥ divāniśam
13. yaḥ vitaṇḍālāpasaṃlāpaiḥ huta yācita vanditaiḥ
vividhaiḥ iṣṭaiḥ gītaiḥ ca divāniśam ramate
13. He who delights day and night in sophistical arguments and conversations, in offerings, pleas, and praises, and in various desirable songs.
उपास्यमानो बहुभिः कुरुपाण्डवसात्वतैः ।
सूत तस्य गृहे शब्धो नाद्य द्रौणेर्यथा पुरा ॥१४॥
14. upāsyamāno bahubhiḥ kurupāṇḍavasātvataiḥ ,
sūta tasya gṛhe śabdho nādya drauṇeryathā purā.
14. upāsyamānaḥ bahubhiḥ kurupāṇḍavasātvataiḥ sūta
tasya gṛhe śabdaḥ na adya drauṇeḥ yathā purā
14. sūta bahubhiḥ kurupāṇḍavasātvataiḥ upāsyamānaḥ
tasya drauṇeḥ gṛhe adya purā yathā śabdaḥ na
14. O Sūta, the sound in the house of Droṇa's son, who used to be attended by many Kurus, Pāṇḍavas, and Sātvatas, is not heard today as it was before.
द्रोणपुत्रं महेष्वासं गायना नर्तकाश्च ये ।
अत्यर्थमुपतिष्ठन्ति तेषां न श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥१५॥
15. droṇaputraṁ maheṣvāsaṁ gāyanā nartakāśca ye ,
atyarthamupatiṣṭhanti teṣāṁ na śrūyate dhvaniḥ.
15. droṇaputram maheṣvāsam gāyanāḥ nartakāḥ ca ye
atyartham upatiṣṭhanti teṣām na śrūyate dhvaniḥ
15. ye gāyanāḥ ca nartakāḥ droṇaputram maheṣvāsam
atyartham upatiṣṭhanti teṣām dhvaniḥ na śrūyate
15. The sound of those singers and dancers who used to serve Droṇa's son, the great archer, is not heard now.
विन्दानुविन्दयोः सायं शिबिरे यो महाध्वनिः ।
श्रूयते सोऽद्य न तथा केकयानां च वेश्मसु ॥१६॥
16. vindānuvindayoḥ sāyaṁ śibire yo mahādhvaniḥ ,
śrūyate so'dya na tathā kekayānāṁ ca veśmasu.
16. vindānuvindayoḥ sāyam śibire yaḥ mahādhvaniḥ
śrūyate saḥ adya na tathā kekayānām ca veśmasu
16. yaḥ mahādhvaniḥ sāyam vindānuvindayoḥ śibire
śrūyate saḥ adya tathā na ca kekayānām veśmasu
16. The great sound that used to be heard in the evening in the camp of Vinda and Anuvinda is not heard today, nor is it heard in the houses of the Kekayas.
नित्यप्रमुदितानां च तालगीतस्वनो महान् ।
नृत्यतां श्रूयते तात गणानां सोऽद्य न ध्वनिः ॥१७॥
17. nityapramuditānāṁ ca tālagītasvano mahān ,
nṛtyatāṁ śrūyate tāta gaṇānāṁ so'dya na dhvaniḥ.
17. nityapramuditānām ca tālagītasvanaḥ mahān
nṛtyatām śrūyate tāta gaṇānām saḥ adya na dhvaniḥ
17. tāta nityapramuditānām nṛtyatām gaṇānām ca
mahān tālagītasvanaḥ śrūyate saḥ dhvaniḥ adya na
17. My dear, the great sound of rhythmic songs from the ever-joyful dancing hosts used to be heard; that sound is not heard today.
सप्ततन्तून्वितन्वाना यमुपासन्ति याजकाः ।
सौमदत्तिं श्रुतनिधिं तेषां न श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥१८॥
18. saptatantūnvitanvānā yamupāsanti yājakāḥ ,
saumadattiṁ śrutanidhiṁ teṣāṁ na śrūyate dhvaniḥ.
18. saptatantūn vitantvānā yam upāsanti yājakāḥ
saumadattim śrutanidhim teṣām na śrūyate dhvaniḥ
18. yam saptatantūn vitantvānāḥ śrutanidhim saumadattim
yājakāḥ upāsanti teṣām dhvaniḥ na śrūyate
18. The sound of those priests who perform the seven Vedic rituals (yajña) and worship Saumadatti, a storehouse of sacred knowledge, is not heard.
ज्याघोषो ब्रह्मघोषश्च तोमरासिरथध्वनिः ।
द्रोणस्यासीदविरतो गृहे तन्न शृणोम्यहम् ॥१९॥
19. jyāghoṣo brahmaghoṣaśca tomarāsirathadhvaniḥ ,
droṇasyāsīdavirato gṛhe tanna śṛṇomyaham.
19. jyāghoṣaḥ brahmaghoṣaḥ ca tomarāsirathadhvaniḥ
droṇasya āsīt avirataḥ gṛhe tat na śṛṇomi aham
19. droṇasya gṛhe jyāghoṣaḥ brahmaghoṣaḥ ca
tomarāsirathadhvaniḥ avirataḥ āsīt aham tat na śṛṇomi
19. The sound of bowstrings, the chanting of the Vedas (brahman), and the clamor of lances, swords, and chariots was unceasing in Droṇa's house. I do not hear that now.
नानादेशसमुत्थानां गीतानां योऽभवत्स्वनः ।
वादित्रनादितानां च सोऽद्य न श्रूयते महान् ॥२०॥
20. nānādeśasamutthānāṁ gītānāṁ yo'bhavatsvanaḥ ,
vāditranāditānāṁ ca so'dya na śrūyate mahān.
20. nānādeśasamutthānām gītānām yaḥ abhavat svanaḥ
vāditranāditānām ca saḥ adya na śrūyate mahān
20. nānādeśasamutthānām gītānām vāditranāditānām ca
yaḥ mahān svanaḥ abhavat saḥ adya na śrūyate
20. The great sound of songs from various lands and of musical instruments being played, which once resonated, is not heard today.
यदा प्रभृत्युपप्लव्याच्छान्तिमिच्छञ्जनार्दनः ।
आगतः सर्वभूतानामनुकम्पार्थमच्युतः ॥२१॥
21. yadā prabhṛtyupaplavyācchāntimicchañjanārdanaḥ ,
āgataḥ sarvabhūtānāmanukampārthamacyutaḥ.
21. yadā prabhṛti upaplavyāt śāntim icchan janārdanaḥ
āgataḥ sarvabhūtānām anukampārtham acyutaḥ
21. yadā acyutaḥ janārdanaḥ śāntim icchan upaplavyāt
sarvabhūtānām anukampārtham prabhṛti āgataḥ
21. Since the time when Janardana (Krishna), the unfailing one (acyuta), desiring peace, arrived from Upaplavya for the sake of compassion for all beings...
ततोऽहमब्रुवं सूत मन्दं दुर्योधनं तदा ।
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन पुत्र संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ॥२२॥
22. tato'hamabruvaṁ sūta mandaṁ duryodhanaṁ tadā ,
vāsudevena tīrthena putra saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ.
22. tataḥ aham abruvam sūta mandam duryodhanam tadā
vāsudevena tīrthena putra saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
22. sūta tataḥ tadā aham mandam duryodhanam abruvam
putra vāsudevena tīrthena pāṇḍavaiḥ saṃśāmya
22. Then, O charioteer (sūta), I spoke to the dull-witted Duryodhana at that time: "O son (putra), make peace with the Pandavas, using Vasudeva (Krishna) as the means."
कालप्राप्तमहं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः ।
शमे चेद्याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम् ।
हितार्थमभिजल्पन्तं न तथास्त्यपराजयः ॥२३॥
23. kālaprāptamahaṁ manye mā tvaṁ duryodhanātigāḥ ,
śame cedyācamānaṁ tvaṁ pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam ,
hitārthamabhijalpantaṁ na tathāstyaparājayaḥ.
23. kālaprāptam aham manye mā tvam duryodhana
atigāḥ śame cet yācamānam tvam
pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam hitārtham
abhijalpantam na tathā asti aparājayaḥ
23. aham kālaprāptam manye duryodhana tvam
mā atigāḥ cet tvam śame yācamānam
hitārtham abhijalpantam keśavam
pratyākhyāsyasi tathā aparājayaḥ na asti
23. I believe this is the right time. O Duryodhana, do not overstep the bounds! If you reject Kesava (Krishna), who is speaking for your welfare and requesting peace, then there will be no escape from defeat.
प्रत्याचष्ट स दाशार्हमृषभं सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
अनुनेयानि जल्पन्तमनयान्नान्वपद्यत ॥२४॥
24. pratyācaṣṭa sa dāśārhamṛṣabhaṁ sarvadhanvinām ,
anuneyāni jalpantamanayānnānvapadyata.
24. pratyācaṣṭa sa dāśārham ṛṣabham sarvadhanvinām
anuneyāni jalpantam anayāt na anvapadyata
24. sa anayāt dāśārham sarvadhanvinām ṛṣabham
anuneyāni jalpantam pratyācaṣṭa na anvapadyata
24. But he (Duryodhana), due to his imprudence, rejected the scion of Daśārha (Krishna), the foremost among all archers, who was speaking conciliatory words. He did not understand (the sense of what was said).
ततो दुःशासनस्यैव कर्णस्य च मतं द्वयोः ।
अन्ववर्तत हित्वा मां कृष्टः कालेन दुर्मतिः ॥२५॥
25. tato duḥśāsanasyaiva karṇasya ca mataṁ dvayoḥ ,
anvavartata hitvā māṁ kṛṣṭaḥ kālena durmatiḥ.
25. tataḥ duḥśāsanasya eva karṇasya ca matam dvayoḥ
anvavartata hitvā mām kṛṣṭaḥ kālena durmatiḥ
25. tataḥ durmatiḥ kālena kṛṣṭaḥ mām hitvā
duḥśāsanasya karṇasya ca dvayoḥ matam anvavartata
25. Then, that ill-minded person, dragged by fate (kāla), disregarded my advice and followed the opinion of Duḥśāsana and Karṇa.
न ह्यहं द्यूतमिच्छामि विदुरो न प्रशंसति ।
सैन्धवो नेच्छते द्यूतं भीष्मो न द्यूतमिच्छति ॥२६॥
26. na hyahaṁ dyūtamicchāmi viduro na praśaṁsati ,
saindhavo necchate dyūtaṁ bhīṣmo na dyūtamicchati.
26. na hi aham dyūtam icchāmi viduraḥ na praśaṃsati
saindhavaḥ na icchate dyūtam bhīṣmaḥ na dyūtam icchati
26. hi aham dyūtam na icchāmi; viduraḥ na praśaṃsati;
saindhavaḥ dyūtam na icchate; bhīṣmaḥ dyūtam na icchati
26. Indeed, I do not wish for gambling, nor does Vidura approve of it. Saindhava does not desire gambling, and Bhishma also does not wish for it.
शल्यो भूरिश्रवाश्चैव पुरुमित्रो जयस्तथा ।
अश्वत्थामा कृपो द्रोणो द्यूतं नेच्छन्ति संजय ॥२७॥
27. śalyo bhūriśravāścaiva purumitro jayastathā ,
aśvatthāmā kṛpo droṇo dyūtaṁ necchanti saṁjaya.
27. śalyaḥ bhūriśravāḥ ca eva purumitraḥ jayaḥ tathā
aśvatthāmā kṛpaḥ droṇaḥ dyūtam na icchanti sañjaya
27. sañjaya śalyaḥ bhūriśravāḥ ca eva purumitraḥ jayaḥ
tathā aśvatthāmā kṛpaḥ droṇaḥ dyūtam na icchanti
27. Saṃjaya, Śalya, Bhūriśravas, Purumitra, Jaya, Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Droṇa—none of these desire gambling.
एतेषां मतमाज्ञाय यदि वर्तेत पुत्रकः ।
सज्ञातिमित्रः ससुहृच्चिरं जीवेदनामयः ॥२८॥
28. eteṣāṁ matamājñāya yadi varteta putrakaḥ ,
sajñātimitraḥ sasuhṛcciraṁ jīvedanāmayaḥ.
28. eteṣām matam ājñāya yadi varteta putrakaḥ
sajñātimitraḥ sasuhṛt ciram jīvet anāmayaḥ
28. yadi putrakaḥ eteṣām matam ājñāya varteta,
sajñātimitraḥ sasuhṛt anāmayaḥ ciram jīvet
28. If my son (putraka) were to act, having understood the opinion of these (wise people), he would live long and free from illness, along with his kinsmen, friends, and well-wishers.
श्लक्ष्णा मधुरसंभाषा ज्ञातिमध्ये प्रियंवदाः ।
कुलीनाः संमताः प्राज्ञाः सुखं प्राप्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥२९॥
29. ślakṣṇā madhurasaṁbhāṣā jñātimadhye priyaṁvadāḥ ,
kulīnāḥ saṁmatāḥ prājñāḥ sukhaṁ prāpsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
29. ślakṣṇā madhura-saṃbhāṣā jñāti-madhye priyaṃvadāḥ
kulīnāḥ saṃmatāḥ prājñāḥ sukham prāpsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ
29. pāṇḍavāḥ ślakṣṇā madhura-saṃbhāṣā jñāti-madhye
priyaṃvadāḥ kulīnāḥ saṃmatāḥ prājñāḥ sukham prāpsyanti
29. The Pandavas, gentle, pleasant in conversation, agreeable in speech among their relatives, of noble lineage, respected, and wise, will attain happiness.
धर्मापेक्षो नरो नित्यं सर्वत्र लभते सुखम् ।
प्रेत्यभावे च कल्याणं प्रसादं प्रतिपद्यते ॥३०॥
30. dharmāpekṣo naro nityaṁ sarvatra labhate sukham ,
pretyabhāve ca kalyāṇaṁ prasādaṁ pratipadyate.

30. A person who adheres to (dharma) always finds happiness everywhere, and in the afterlife, he attains well-being and grace.
अर्हन्त्यर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते भोक्तुं सामर्थ्यसाधनाः ।
तेषामपि समुद्रान्ता पितृपैतामही मही ॥३१॥
31. arhantyardhaṁ pṛthivyāste bhoktuṁ sāmarthyasādhanāḥ ,
teṣāmapi samudrāntā pitṛpaitāmahī mahī.
31. arhanti ardham pṛthivyāḥ te bhoktum sāmarthya-sādhanāḥ
teṣām api samudra-antā pitṛ-paitāmahī mahī
31. te sāmarthya-sādhanāḥ pṛthivyāḥ ardham bhoktum
arhanti teṣām api samudra-antā pitṛ-paitāmahī mahī
31. They, being capable of achieving (their aims), deserve to rule half of the earth. Furthermore, their ancestral land extends to the ocean.
नियुज्यमानाः स्थास्यन्ति पाण्डवा धर्मवर्त्मनि ।
सन्ति नो ज्ञातयस्तात येषां श्रोष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥३२॥
32. niyujyamānāḥ sthāsyanti pāṇḍavā dharmavartmani ,
santi no jñātayastāta yeṣāṁ śroṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
32. niyujyamānāḥ sthāsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ dharma-vartmani
santi naḥ jñātayaḥ tāta yeṣām śroṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ
32. pāṇḍavāḥ niyujyamānāḥ dharma-vartmani sthāsyanti
tāta naḥ jñātayaḥ santi yeṣām pāṇḍavāḥ śroṣyanti
32. The Pandavas, if appointed, will remain on the path of (dharma). O dear father, we have relatives whom the Pandavas will heed.
शल्यस्य सोमदत्तस्य भीष्मस्य च महात्मनः ।
द्रोणस्याथ विकर्णस्य बाह्लिकस्य कृपस्य च ॥३३॥
33. śalyasya somadattasya bhīṣmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
droṇasyātha vikarṇasya bāhlikasya kṛpasya ca.

33. Of Śalya, Somadatta, the great-souled (mahātman) Bhīṣma, and of Droṇa; then of Vikarṇa, Bāhlika, and Kṛpa.
अन्येषां चैव वृद्धानां भरतानां महात्मनाम् ।
त्वदर्थं ब्रुवतां तात करिष्यन्ति वचो हितम् ॥३४॥
34. anyeṣāṁ caiva vṛddhānāṁ bharatānāṁ mahātmanām ,
tvadarthaṁ bruvatāṁ tāta kariṣyanti vaco hitam.
34. anyeṣām ca eva vṛddhānām bharatānām mahātmanām
tvadartham bruvatām tāta kariṣyanti vacaḥ hitam
34. tāta anyeṣām ca eva mahātmanām vṛddhānām bharatānām
tvadartham bruvatām vacaḥ hitam kariṣyanti
34. And other noble (mahātman) elders among the Bhāratas (descendants of Bharata)—O dear one, they will speak for your sake and perform what is beneficial.
कं वा त्वं मन्यसे तेषां यस्त्वा ब्रूयादतोऽन्यथा ।
कृष्णो न धर्मं संजह्यात्सर्वे ते च त्वदन्वयाः ॥३५॥
35. kaṁ vā tvaṁ manyase teṣāṁ yastvā brūyādato'nyathā ,
kṛṣṇo na dharmaṁ saṁjahyātsarve te ca tvadanvayāḥ.
35. kam vā tvam manyase teṣām yaḥ tvā brūyāt ataḥ anyathā
kṛṣṇaḥ na dharmam saṃjahyāt sarve te ca tvadanvayāḥ
35. tvam vā teṣām kam manyase yaḥ tvā ataḥ anyathā brūyāt? kṛṣṇaḥ dharmam na saṃjahyāt.
ca te sarve tvadanvayāḥ.
35. Or whom among them do you think would tell you otherwise? Kṛṣṇa would not abandon natural law (dharma), and all of them are related to you.
मयापि चोक्तास्ते वीरा वचनं धर्मसंहितम् ।
नान्यथा प्रकरिष्यन्ति धर्मात्मानो हि पाण्डवाः ॥३६॥
36. mayāpi coktāste vīrā vacanaṁ dharmasaṁhitam ,
nānyathā prakariṣyanti dharmātmāno hi pāṇḍavāḥ.
36. mayā api ca uktāḥ te vīrāḥ vacanam dharmasaṃhitam
na anyathā prakariṣyanti dharmātmānaḥ hi pāṇḍavāḥ
36. ca api te vīrāḥ mayā dharmasaṃhitam vacanam uktāḥ.
hi dharmātmānaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ na anyathā prakariṣyanti.
36. Moreover, those heroes have been told by me words consonant with natural law (dharma). Indeed, the Pāṇḍavas, whose very nature (ātman) is righteousness (dharma), will certainly not act otherwise.
इत्यहं विलपन्सूत बहुशः पुत्रमुक्तवान् ।
न च मे श्रुतवान्मूढो मन्ये कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥३७॥
37. ityahaṁ vilapansūta bahuśaḥ putramuktavān ,
na ca me śrutavānmūḍho manye kālasya paryayam.
37. iti aham vilapan sūta bahuśaḥ putram uktavān na
ca me śrutavān mūḍhaḥ manye kālasya paryayam
37. sūta iti aham vilapan bahuśaḥ putram uktavān ca
mūḍhaḥ me na śrutavān manye kālasya paryayam
37. Thus, lamenting, O Sūta, I spoke to my son many times. But that foolish one did not listen to me; I believe it was the inevitable turn of time.
वृकोदरार्जुनौ यत्र वृष्णिवीरश्च सात्यकिः ।
उत्तमौजाश्च पाञ्चाल्यो युधामन्युश्च दुर्जयः ॥३८॥
38. vṛkodarārjunau yatra vṛṣṇivīraśca sātyakiḥ ,
uttamaujāśca pāñcālyo yudhāmanyuśca durjayaḥ.

38. Where Bhima (Vṛkodara) and Arjuna are, and Satyaki, the hero of the Vṛṣṇis, along with Uttamaujas, the prince of Pañcāla, and the unconquerable Yudhamanyu.
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च दुर्धर्षः शिखण्डी चापराजितः ।
अश्मकाः केकयाश्चैव क्षत्रधर्मा च सौमकिः ॥३९॥
39. dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca durdharṣaḥ śikhaṇḍī cāparājitaḥ ,
aśmakāḥ kekayāścaiva kṣatradharmā ca saumakiḥ.
39. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca durdharṣaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca aparājitaḥ
aśmakāḥ kekayāḥ ca eva kṣatradharmā ca saumakiḥ

39. And the formidable Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and the unconquered Śikhaṇḍī; the Aśmakas and also the Kekayas, and Kṣatradharman, the Saumaki.
चैद्यश्च चेकितानश्च पुत्रः काश्यस्य चाभिभुः ।
द्रौपदेया विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ।
यमौ च पुरुषव्याघ्रौ मन्त्री च मधुसूदनः ॥४०॥
40. caidyaśca cekitānaśca putraḥ kāśyasya cābhibhuḥ ,
draupadeyā virāṭaśca drupadaśca mahārathaḥ ,
yamau ca puruṣavyāghrau mantrī ca madhusūdanaḥ.
40. caidyaḥ ca cekitānaḥ ca putraḥ kāśyasya
ca abhibhūḥ draupadeyāḥ virāṭaḥ
ca drupadaḥ ca mahārathaḥ yamau ca

40. And the Caidya, and Cekitāna, and the powerful son of the king of Kāśī; the sons of Draupadī, and Virāṭa, and Drupada, the great chariot-warrior (mahāratha); and the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), who are like tigers among men (puruṣavyāghra); and the counselor Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa).
क एताञ्जातु युध्येत लोकेऽस्मिन्वै जिजीविषुः ।
दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणान्संहरेयुररिंदमाः ॥४१॥
41. ka etāñjātu yudhyeta loke'sminvai jijīviṣuḥ ,
divyamastraṁ vikurvāṇānsaṁhareyurariṁdamāḥ.
41. kaḥ etān jātu yudhyeta loke asmin vai jijīviṣuḥ
divyam astram vikurvāṇān saṃhareyuḥ ariṃdamāḥ
41. kaḥ jijīviṣuḥ loke asmin vai jātu etān divyam astram vikurvāṇān yudhyeta? ariṃdamāḥ saṃhareyuḥ.
41. Who in this world, desiring to live, would ever fight against these (Pāṇḍavas), who wield divine weapons? These vanquishers of foes would certainly destroy (them).
अन्यो दुर्योधनात्कर्णाच्छकुनेश्चापि सौबलात् ।
दुःशासनचतुर्थानां नान्यं पश्यामि पञ्चमम् ॥४२॥
42. anyo duryodhanātkarṇācchakuneścāpi saubalāt ,
duḥśāsanacaturthānāṁ nānyaṁ paśyāmi pañcamam.
42. anyaḥ duryodhanāt karṇāt śakuneḥ ca api saubalāt
duḥśāsana-caturthānām na anyam paśyāmi pañcamam
42. duryodhanāt karṇāt śakuneḥ saubalāt ca api anyaḥ (kaścit) Duḥśāsana-caturthānām (madhye) pañcamam anyam na paśyāmi.
42. Apart from Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni, son of Subala, I do not see any other fifth person (of importance) among those who have Duḥśāsana as the fourth.
येषामभीशुहस्तः स्याद्विष्वक्सेनो रथे स्थितः ।
संनद्धश्चार्जुनो योद्धा तेषां नास्ति पराजयः ॥४३॥
43. yeṣāmabhīśuhastaḥ syādviṣvakseno rathe sthitaḥ ,
saṁnaddhaścārjuno yoddhā teṣāṁ nāsti parājayaḥ.
43. yeṣām abhīśuhastaḥ syāt viṣvaksenaḥ rathe sthitaḥ
saṃnaddhaḥ ca arjunaḥ yoddhā teṣām na asti parājayaḥ
43. yeṣām rathe sthitaḥ abhīśuhastaḥ viṣvaksenaḥ syāt,
ca saṃnaddhaḥ yoddhā arjunaḥ (syāt),
teṣām parājayaḥ na asti.
43. For whom viṣvaksena (kṛṣṇa) stands on the chariot with the reins in his hand, and arjuna, the warrior, is armored and ready – for them there is no defeat.
तेषां मम विलापानां न हि दुर्योधनः स्मरेत् ।
हतौ हि पुरुषव्याघ्रौ भीष्मद्रोणौ त्वमात्थ मे ॥४४॥
44. teṣāṁ mama vilāpānāṁ na hi duryodhanaḥ smaret ,
hatau hi puruṣavyāghrau bhīṣmadroṇau tvamāttha me.
44. teṣām mama vilāpānām na hi duryodhanaḥ smaret
hatau hi puruṣavyāghrau bhīṣma-droṇau tvam āttha me
44. duryodhanaḥ mama teṣām vilāpānām na hi smaret.
(yataḥ) tvam me hatau puruṣavyāghrau bhīṣma-droṇau āttha hi.
44. Duryodhana surely would not remember these lamentations of mine. Indeed, you (sañjaya) have just told me that bhīṣma and droṇa, those two tigers among men, have been slain.
तेषां विदुरवाक्यानामुक्तानां दीर्घदर्शिनाम् ।
दृष्ट्वेमां फलनिर्वृत्तिं मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥४५॥
45. teṣāṁ viduravākyānāmuktānāṁ dīrghadarśinām ,
dṛṣṭvemāṁ phalanirvṛttiṁ manye śocanti putrakāḥ.
45. teṣām viduravākyānām uktānām dīrghadarśinām
dṛṣṭvā imām phalanirvṛttim manye śocanti putrakāḥ
45. putrakāḥ teṣām dīrghadarśinām uktānām viduravākyānām
imām phalanirvṛttim dṛṣṭvā śocanti manye
45. I believe my sons now grieve, having witnessed this outcome of those words spoken by the far-sighted Vidura.
हिमात्यये यथा कक्षं शुष्कं वातेरितो महान् ।
अग्निर्दहेत्तथा सेनां मामिकां स धनंजयः ॥४६॥
46. himātyaye yathā kakṣaṁ śuṣkaṁ vāterito mahān ,
agnirdahettathā senāṁ māmikāṁ sa dhanaṁjayaḥ.
46. himātyaye yathā kakṣam śuṣkam vāteritaḥ mahān
agniḥ dahet tathā senām māmikām saḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
46. yathā himātyaye vāteritaḥ mahān agniḥ śuṣkam kakṣam
dahet tathā saḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ māmikām senām (dahet)
46. Just as a great fire, fanned by the wind, would burn dry grass at the end of winter, so too will that Dhananjaya (Arjuna) consume my army.
आचक्ष्व तद्धि नः सर्वं कुशलो ह्यसि संजय ।
यदुपायात्तु सायाह्ने कृत्वा पार्थस्य किल्बिषम् ।
अभिमन्यौ हते तात कथमासीन्मनो हि वः ॥४७॥
47. ācakṣva taddhi naḥ sarvaṁ kuśalo hyasi saṁjaya ,
yadupāyāttu sāyāhne kṛtvā pārthasya kilbiṣam ,
abhimanyau hate tāta kathamāsīnmano hi vaḥ.
47. ācakṣva tat hi naḥ sarvam kuśalaḥ hi
asi saṃjaya yat upāyāt tu sāyāhne
kṛtvā pārthasya kilbiṣam abhimanyau
hate tāta katham āsīt manaḥ hi vaḥ
47. saṃjaya kuśalaḥ hi asi,
tat hi sarvam naḥ ācakṣva tāta abhimanyau hate pārthasya kilbiṣam kṛtvā yat tu sāyāhne upāyāt,
vaḥ manaḥ katham hi āsīt?
47. O Sanjaya, you are indeed skilled, so relate all of it to us. My dear (tāta), how was your mind when Abhimanyu was slain, after you had committed such an offense against Arjuna, and as the evening (sāyāhna) approached?
न जातु तस्य कर्माणि युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
अपकृत्वा महत्तात सोढुं शक्ष्यन्ति मामकाः ॥४८॥
48. na jātu tasya karmāṇi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
apakṛtvā mahattāta soḍhuṁ śakṣyanti māmakāḥ.
48. na jātu tasya karmāṇi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
apakṛtvā mahat tāta soḍhum śakṣyanti māmakāḥ
48. tāta māmakāḥ na jātu tasya gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
yudhi karmāṇi mahat apakṛtvā soḍhum śakṣyanti
48. My dear (tāta), my sons (māmakāḥ) will never, at any time, be able to bear the deeds (karma) of that wielder of the Gandiva bow (gāṇḍīvadhanvan) in battle, after having greatly offended him.
किं नु दुर्योधनः कृत्यं कर्णः कृत्यं किमब्रवीत् ।
दुःशासनः सौबलश्च तेषामेवं गते अपि ।
सर्वेषां समवेतानां पुत्राणां मम संजय ॥४९॥
49. kiṁ nu duryodhanaḥ kṛtyaṁ karṇaḥ kṛtyaṁ kimabravīt ,
duḥśāsanaḥ saubalaśca teṣāmevaṁ gate api ,
sarveṣāṁ samavetānāṁ putrāṇāṁ mama saṁjaya.
49. kim nu Duryodhanaḥ kṛtyam Karṇaḥ
kṛtyam kim abravīt Duḥśāsanaḥ Saubalaḥ
ca teṣām evam gate api sarveṣām
samavetānām putrāṇām mama Sañjaya
49. Sañjaya mama sarveṣām samavetānām
putrāṇām teṣām Duḥśāsanaḥ Saubalaḥ
ca evam gate api Duryodhanaḥ
kim kṛtyam Karṇaḥ kim kṛtyam abravīt
49. O Sañjaya, what was the task [or action] Duryodhana undertook? What did Karṇa say should be done? What about Duḥśāsana and the son of Subala (Śakuni)? Tell me what transpired with all my assembled sons, even after things have come to this pass.
यद्वृत्तं तात संग्रामे मन्दस्यापनयैर्भृशम् ।
लोभानुगतदुर्बुद्धेः क्रोधेन विकृतात्मनः ॥५०॥
50. yadvṛttaṁ tāta saṁgrāme mandasyāpanayairbhṛśam ,
lobhānugatadurbuddheḥ krodhena vikṛtātmanaḥ.
50. yat vṛttam tāta saṃgrāme mandasya apanayaiḥ bhṛśam
lobhānugatadurbuddheḥ krodhena vikṛtātmanaḥ
50. tāta saṃgrāme lobhānugatadurbuddheḥ krodhena
vikṛtātmanaḥ mandasya apanayaiḥ bhṛśam yat vṛttam
50. O dear one (tāta), relate to me what transpired in the battle regarding that foolish one (Duryodhana), whose wicked intellect is completely governed by greed, whose inner nature (ātman) is distorted by anger, and who committed numerous wrongdoings.
राज्यकामस्य मूढस्य रागोपहतचेतसः ।
दुर्नीतं वा सुनीतं वा तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥५१॥
51. rājyakāmasya mūḍhasya rāgopahatacetasaḥ ,
durnītaṁ vā sunītaṁ vā tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
51. rājyakāmasya mūḍhasya rāgopahatacetasaḥ
durnītam vā sunītam vā tat mama ācakṣva Sañjaya
51. Sañjaya rājyakāmasya mūḍhasya rāgopahatacetasaḥ
durnītam vā sunītam vā tat mama ācakṣva
51. O Sañjaya, explain to me whether it was misconduct or good policy concerning that deluded one (Duryodhana), who desired the kingdom and whose mind (cetas) was completely overcome by passion.
