वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शारद्वतो वाक्यमित्युवाच कृपस्तदा ।
युक्तं प्राप्तं च वृद्धेन पाण्डवान्प्रति भाषितम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śāradvato vākyamityuvāca kṛpastadā ,
yuktaṁ prāptaṁ ca vṛddhena pāṇḍavānprati bhāṣitam.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ śāradvataḥ vākyam iti uvāca kṛpaḥ
tadā yuktam prāptam ca vṛddhena pāṇḍavān prati bhāṣitam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Kṛpa Śāradvata spoke thus: "What has been spoken to the Pāṇḍavas by the elder (vṛddha) is proper and well-received."
धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णं तत्त्वतश्च सहेतुमत् ।
तत्रानुरूपं भीष्मेण ममाप्यत्र गिरं शृणु ॥२॥
2. dharmārthasahitaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ tattvataśca sahetumat ,
tatrānurūpaṁ bhīṣmeṇa mamāpyatra giraṁ śṛṇu.
2. dharmārthasahitam ślakṣṇam tattvataḥ ca sahetumat
tatra anurūpam bhīṣmeṇa mama api atra giram śṛṇu
2. Listen now to my words here, which are appropriate for this context, just like Bhishma's speech. My words are subtle, essentially true, well-reasoned, and pertain to both natural law (dharma) and practical prosperity (artha).
तेषां चैव गतिस्तीर्थैर्वासश्चैषां प्रचिन्त्यताम् ।
नीतिर्विधीयतां चापि सांप्रतं या हिता भवेत् ॥३॥
3. teṣāṁ caiva gatistīrthairvāsaścaiṣāṁ pracintyatām ,
nītirvidhīyatāṁ cāpi sāṁprataṁ yā hitā bhavet.
3. teṣām ca eva gatiḥ tīrthaiḥ vāsaḥ ca eṣām pracintyatām
nītiḥ vidhīyatām ca api sāmpratam yā hitā bhavet
3. Their movements and dwelling places should indeed be thoroughly considered by appropriate means. Furthermore, let a policy (nīti) now be established that would prove beneficial.
नावज्ञेयो रिपुस्तात प्राकृतोऽपि बुभूषता ।
किं पुनः पाण्डवास्तात सर्वास्त्रकुशला रणे ॥४॥
4. nāvajñeyo ripustāta prākṛto'pi bubhūṣatā ,
kiṁ punaḥ pāṇḍavāstāta sarvāstrakuśalā raṇe.
4. na avajñeyaḥ ripuḥ tāta prākṛtaḥ api bubhūṣatā
kim punaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tāta sarvāstrakūśalāḥ raṇe
4. Dear son, one who desires to prosper should not despise an enemy, even an ordinary one. How much less should one despise the Pandavas, dear son, who are skilled in all weapons on the battlefield?
तस्मात्सत्रं प्रविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
गूढभावेषु छन्नेषु काले चोदयमागते ॥५॥
5. tasmātsatraṁ praviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
gūḍhabhāveṣu channeṣu kāle codayamāgate.
5. tasmāt sattram praviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
gūḍhabhāveṣu channeṣu kāle ca udayam āgate
5. Therefore, as the great-souled (mahātman) Pandavas, with their intentions concealed and themselves in hiding, have entered a retreat, and with the time for their emergence now at hand...
स्वराष्ट्रपरराष्ट्रेषु ज्ञातव्यं बलमात्मनः ।
उदये पाण्डवानां च प्राप्ते काले न संशयः ॥६॥
6. svarāṣṭrapararāṣṭreṣu jñātavyaṁ balamātmanaḥ ,
udaye pāṇḍavānāṁ ca prāpte kāle na saṁśayaḥ.
6. svarāṣṭrapararāṣṭreṣu jñātavyam balam ātmanaḥ
udaye pāṇḍavānām ca prāpte kāle na saṃśayaḥ
6. One should ascertain their own strength (ātman) both within their own country and in foreign lands. There is no doubt that when the time for the rise of the Pāṇḍavas arrives, it will happen.
निवृत्तसमयाः पार्था महात्मानो महाबलाः ।
महोत्साहा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवा ह्यतितेजसः ॥७॥
7. nivṛttasamayāḥ pārthā mahātmāno mahābalāḥ ,
mahotsāhā bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavā hyatitejasaḥ.
7. nivṛttasamayāḥ pārthāḥ mahātmānaḥ mahābalāḥ
mahotsāhāḥ bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ hi atitejasaḥ
7. The Pāṇḍavas, sons of Pṛthā, having completed their term, will indeed become great-souled (mahātman), immensely powerful, and filled with great enthusiasm, possessing exceptional vigor.
तस्माद्बलं च कोशं च नीतिश्चापि विधीयताम् ।
यथा कालोदये प्राप्ते सम्यक्तैः संदधामहे ॥८॥
8. tasmādbalaṁ ca kośaṁ ca nītiścāpi vidhīyatām ,
yathā kālodaye prāpte samyaktaiḥ saṁdadhāmahe.
8. tasmāt balam ca kośam ca nītiḥ ca api vidhīyatām
yathā kāla-udaye prāpte samyak taiḥ saṃdadāmahe
8. Therefore, let resources (bala), the treasury (kośa), and political strategy (nīti) be duly prepared, so that when the opportune time arrives, we may properly reconcile with them.
तात मन्यामि तत्सर्वं बुध्यस्व बलमात्मनः ।
नियतं सर्वमित्रेषु बलवत्स्वबलेषु च ॥९॥
9. tāta manyāmi tatsarvaṁ budhyasva balamātmanaḥ ,
niyataṁ sarvamitreṣu balavatsvabaleṣu ca.
9. tāta manyāmi tat sarvam budhyasva balam ātmanaḥ
niyatam sarvamitreṣu balavatsu abaleṣu ca
9. Father, I consider all this (to be true). Understand your own strength (ātman) consistently, both among all allies and among those who are strong or weak.
उच्चावचं बलं ज्ञात्वा मध्यस्थं चापि भारत ।
प्रहृष्टमप्रहृष्टं च संदधाम तथा परैः ॥१०॥
10. uccāvacaṁ balaṁ jñātvā madhyasthaṁ cāpi bhārata ,
prahṛṣṭamaprahṛṣṭaṁ ca saṁdadhāma tathā paraiḥ.
10. uccāvacam balam jñātvā madhyastham ca api bhārata
prahṛṣṭam aprahṛṣṭam ca saṃdadhāma tathā paraiḥ
10. O Bhārata, after assessing the various types of military strength (bala), including neutral ones, and those that are enthusiastic and unenthusiastic, we should therefore make alliances with others.
साम्ना भेदेन दानेन दण्डेन बलिकर्मणा ।
न्यायेनानम्य च परान्बलाच्चानम्य दुर्बलान् ॥११॥
11. sāmnā bhedena dānena daṇḍena balikarmaṇā ,
nyāyenānamya ca parānbalāccānamya durbalān.
11. sāmnā bhedena dānena daṇḍena balikarmaṇā
nyāyena ānamya ca parān balāt ca ānamya durbalān
11. By means of conciliation, by causing division, by offering gifts (dāna), by applying punishment, and by exacting tribute, one should subdue enemies justly; and also forcibly subdue the weak.
सान्त्वयित्वा च मित्राणि बलं चाभाष्यतां सुखम् ।
सकोशबलसंवृद्धः सम्यक्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥१२॥
12. sāntvayitvā ca mitrāṇi balaṁ cābhāṣyatāṁ sukham ,
sakośabalasaṁvṛddhaḥ samyaksiddhimavāpsyasi.
12. sāntvayitvā ca mitrāṇi balam ca ābhāṣyatām sukham
sakośabalasaṃvṛddhaḥ samyak siddhim avāpsyasi
12. And after conciliating your allies, and ensuring the army is addressed pleasantly, you, having been thoroughly enriched with treasury and military strength (bala), will attain complete success.
योत्स्यसे चापि बलिभिररिभिः प्रत्युपस्थितैः ।
अन्यैस्त्वं पाण्डवैर्वापि हीनस्वबलवाहनैः ॥१३॥
13. yotsyase cāpi balibhiraribhiḥ pratyupasthitaiḥ ,
anyaistvaṁ pāṇḍavairvāpi hīnasvabalavāhanaiḥ.
13. yotsyase ca api balibhiḥ aribhiḥ pratyupasthitaiḥ
anyaiḥ tvam pāṇḍavaiḥ vā api hīnasvabalavāhanaiḥ
13. You will fight with powerful enemies who are confronting you. And you will also fight with other opponents, or even with the Pāṇḍavas, who are diminished in their own strength (bala) and vehicles.
एवं सर्वं विनिश्चित्य व्यवसायं स्वधर्मतः ।
यथाकालं मनुष्येन्द्र चिरं सुखमवाप्स्यसि ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ sarvaṁ viniścitya vyavasāyaṁ svadharmataḥ ,
yathākālaṁ manuṣyendra ciraṁ sukhamavāpsyasi.
14. evam sarvam viniścitya vyavasāyam svadharmataḥ
yathākālam manuṣyendra ciram sukham avāpsyasi
14. Having thus determined everything and your undertaking in accordance with your own natural law (dharma), O lord of men, you will obtain lasting happiness at the appropriate time.
