Sūta said: No sooner was that branch of the tree touched by the mighty Garuḍa's feet than it broke. And he held onto that broken (branch).

Smiling, he carefully observed that great broken branch. Then, hanging there, he saw the Vālakhilyas, with their faces turned downwards.

Out of fear for their destruction, the lord of birds, moving swiftly, grasped the branch with his beak, purely out of concern for them. The bird then descended slowly, shattering mountains as he went.

Thus, he, carrying elephants and tortoises, flew over many lands for the sake of compassion for the Vālakhilyas. Yet, he could not find a suitable place.

Having gone to the imperishable, best of mountains, Gandhamādana, he saw his father Kaśyapa engaged in penance there.

Then, seeing him arrive, the venerable Kaśyapa, understanding his intention, spoke these words.

O son, do not act rashly. Otherwise, you will immediately suffer distress. May the enraged Vālakhilyas, who subsist on rays of light, not burn you.

Kaśyapa, on account of his son, propitiated those Vālakhilyas, perfected by penance, presenting this as the reason.

O ascetics, whose wealth is penance! This undertaking of Garuḍa is for the welfare of creatures. He intends to accomplish a great feat. Therefore, you should grant him permission.

Thus addressed by the revered sage, those renunciants, intent on asceticism, departed, leaving the branch [of the tree on] the sacred Himavat mountain.

Then, after they had gone away, Vinata's son (Garuda), whose face was obscured by the branch (he was carrying), asked his father, Kaśyapa.

16.
O Venerable One, where should I release this tree branch? May your venerable self tell me of a region uninhabited by Brahmins.

Then Kaśyapa told him of a mountain that was devoid of people, with caves blocked by snow, and inaccessible even to the thoughts of others.

Having mentally envisioned that mountain with huge slopes, the bird, Garuda, quickly flew towards it, along with the branch, elephant, and tortoise.

Not even a very large strap, made of a hundred hides, could encompass that enormous branch of the tree, which the bird (Garuda) had seized and flown away with.

Struck by the wind from his wings, that king of mountains greatly trembled. Its trees, dislodged and falling, then shed a shower of flowers.

And many trees, having been struck by that very branch, shone with their golden flowers, appearing like clouds filled with lightning.

Then, swift as thought, he sprang up from the mountain's peak. Thereupon, frightening omens for the gods began to manifest.

Similarly, for the Vasus, Rudras, and Adityas, and for all the Sadhyas and Maruts, and also for those other groups of deities, their own individual weapons moved against each other.

31.
And even the cloudless sky roared with a great sound. Then, even the God of gods rained blood.

32.
The garlands of the gods withered, and their splendors indeed dimmed. Dreadful ominous clouds rained much blood. Rising dust assailed their crowns.

Then, Śatakratu (Indra), deeply disturbed by terror, seeing these dreadful omens along with the gods, thus spoke to Bṛhaspati.

34.
O venerable one, why have these dreadful great omens arisen? And I do not perceive any enemy in battle who could overpower us.

35.
Bṛhaspati said: "O Indra, king of the gods, O Śatakratu, due to your offense and carelessness, a marvelous being has been born from the asceticism of the Vālakhilyas."

He is the son of the sage Kaśyapa and of Vinatā, a sky-dweller. He has arrived, mighty and capable of assuming any form, to seize the Soma.

This bird is capable, the best among the mighty, to seize the Soma. I believe he can accomplish even the impossible.

Sūta said: "Having heard these words, Indra spoke to the protectors of the nectar: 'A bird of great valor and strength is ready here to seize the Soma.'"

Upon hearing that (command), the gods, astonished and resolute in their efforts, stood surrounding the nectar. Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt and performer of a hundred sacrifices, was among them.

Adorned with divine ornaments and shining with resplendent weapons, those luminous hosts of gods stood there, free from all impurity.

The gods, endowed with incomparable strength, prowess, and splendor, with their minds fixed on protecting the Amrita, and who were the destroyers of the Asura cities, shone forth with bodies ablaze like fire.

Thus, that excellent battlefield, crowded with hundreds of thousands of maces and occupied by the gods, shone brilliantly, illuminated by the sun's rays, as if it had settled in the mid-atmosphere.
