अतिथिरुवाच ।
उपदेशं तु ते विप्र करिष्येऽहं यथागमम् ।
गुरुणा मे यथाख्यातमर्थतस्तच्च मे शृणु ॥१॥
1. atithiruvāca ,
upadeśaṁ tu te vipra kariṣye'haṁ yathāgamam ,
guruṇā me yathākhyātamarthatastacca me śṛṇu.
1. atithiḥ uvāca upadeśam tu te vipra kariṣye aham yathāgamam
guruṇā me yathā ākhyātam arthataḥ tat ca me śṛṇu
1. The guest said: 'O brahmin, I will certainly give you instruction in accordance with the tradition (āgama), just as it was explained by my preceptor (guru). Listen to that essential teaching from me.'
यत्र पूर्वाभिसर्गेण धर्मचक्रं प्रवर्तितम् ।
नैमिषे गोमतीतीरे तत्र नागाह्वयं पुरम् ॥२॥
2. yatra pūrvābhisargeṇa dharmacakraṁ pravartitam ,
naimiṣe gomatītīre tatra nāgāhvayaṁ puram.

2. Where, by an earlier emanation, the cosmic order (dharma-cakra) was set in motion, there, on the bank of the Gomati river in Naimiṣa, is a city named Nāga.
समग्रैस्त्रिदशैस्तत्र इष्टमासीद्द्विजर्षभ ।
यत्रेन्द्रातिक्रमं चक्रे मान्धाता राजसत्तमः ॥३॥
3. samagraistridaśaistatra iṣṭamāsīddvijarṣabha ,
yatrendrātikramaṁ cakre māndhātā rājasattamaḥ.
3. samagraiḥ tridaśaiḥ tatra iṣṭam āsīt dvijarṣabha
yatra indrātīkramam cakre māndhātā rājasattamaḥ
3. O best of brahmins, there, a Vedic ritual (yajña) was performed by all the gods, during which Māndhātā, the foremost of kings, committed an offense against Indra.
कृताधिवासो धर्मात्मा तत्र चक्षुःश्रवा महान् ।
पद्मनाभो महाभागः पद्म इत्येव विश्रुतः ॥४॥
4. kṛtādhivāso dharmātmā tatra cakṣuḥśravā mahān ,
padmanābho mahābhāgaḥ padma ityeva viśrutaḥ.
4. kṛta-adhivāsaḥ dharma-ātmā tatra cakṣuḥ-śravāḥ mahān
padma-nābhaḥ mahā-bhāgaḥ padma iti eva viśrutaḥ
4. tatra mahān kṛta-adhivāsaḥ dharma-ātmā cakṣuḥ-śravāḥ
padma-nābhaḥ mahā-bhāgaḥ padma iti eva viśrutaḥ
4. There, a great snake (cakṣuḥśravas), whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteous, named Padmanābha, highly illustrious, had made his dwelling and was renowned simply as Padma.
स वाचा कर्मणा चैव मनसा च द्विजर्षभ ।
प्रसादयति भूतानि त्रिविधे वर्त्मनि स्थितः ॥५॥
5. sa vācā karmaṇā caiva manasā ca dvijarṣabha ,
prasādayati bhūtāni trividhe vartmani sthitaḥ.
5. saḥ vācā karmaṇā ca eva manasā ca dvija-ṛṣabha
prasādayati bhūtāni tri-vidhe vartmani sthitaḥ
5. dvija-ṛṣabha saḥ tri-vidhe vartmani sthitaḥ vācā
ca eva karmaṇā ca manasā ca bhūtāni prasādayati
5. O best among the twice-born (dvija-ṛṣabha), he, abiding in the threefold path, propitiates all beings through speech, action, and mind.
साम्ना दानेन भेदेन दण्डेनेति चतुर्विधम् ।
विषमस्थं जनं स्वं च चक्षुर्ध्यानेन रक्षति ॥६॥
6. sāmnā dānena bhedena daṇḍeneti caturvidham ,
viṣamasthaṁ janaṁ svaṁ ca cakṣurdhyānena rakṣati.
6. sāmnā dānena bhedena daṇḍena iti catur-vidham
viṣama-stham janam svam ca cakṣuḥ-dhyānena rakṣati
6. saḥ sāmnā dānena bhedena daṇḍena iti catur-vidham (upāyam)
svam janam ca viṣama-stham janam cakṣuḥ-dhyānena rakṣati
6. He protects his own people and those in difficult situations, employing the four traditional strategies - conciliation, gifts, division, and punishment - and also through his watchful gaze.
तमभिक्रम्य विधिना प्रष्टुमर्हसि काङ्क्षितम् ।
स ते परमकं धर्मं नमिथ्या दर्शयिष्यति ॥७॥
7. tamabhikramya vidhinā praṣṭumarhasi kāṅkṣitam ,
sa te paramakaṁ dharmaṁ namithyā darśayiṣyati.
7. tam abhikramya vidhinā praṣṭum arhasi kāṅkṣitam
| saḥ te paramakam dharmam na mithyā darśayiṣyati
7. tam abhikramya vidhinā kāṅkṣitam praṣṭum arhasi
saḥ te paramakam dharmam mithyā na darśayiṣyati
7. Having approached him according to proper procedure, you ought to ask what you desire. He will not falsely explain the supreme natural law (dharma) to you.
स हि सर्वातिथिर्नागो बुद्धिशास्त्रविशारदः ।
गुणैरनवमैर्युक्तः समस्तैराभिकामिकैः ॥८॥
8. sa hi sarvātithirnāgo buddhiśāstraviśāradaḥ ,
guṇairanavamairyuktaḥ samastairābhikāmikaiḥ.
8. saḥ hi sarvātithiḥ nāgaḥ buddhiśāstraviśāradaḥ
guṇaiḥ anavamaiḥ yuktaḥ samastaiḥ ābhikāmikaiḥ
8. saḥ hi nāgaḥ sarvātithiḥ buddhiśāstraviśāradaḥ
samastaiḥ anavamaiḥ ābhikāmikaiḥ guṇaiḥ yuktaḥ
8. Indeed, he, the nāga (serpent deity), is a guest to all, an expert in intellect and scriptures, endowed with all unparalleled and desirable qualities.
प्रकृत्या नित्यसलिलो नित्यमध्ययने रतः ।
तपोदमाभ्यां संयुक्तो वृत्तेनानवरेण च ॥९॥
9. prakṛtyā nityasalilo nityamadhyayane rataḥ ,
tapodamābhyāṁ saṁyukto vṛttenānavareṇa ca.
9. prakṛtyā nityasalilaḥ nityam adhyayane rataḥ
tapodamābhyām saṃyuktaḥ vṛttena anavareṇa ca
9. prakṛtyā nitya-salilaḥ nityam adhyayane rataḥ
tapodamābhyām saṃyuktaḥ ca anavareṇa vṛttena
9. By nature (prakṛti), he is perpetually pure, constantly dedicated to study, endowed with austerity (tapas) and self-control, and possesses faultless conduct.
यज्वा दानरुचिः क्षान्तो वृत्ते च परमे स्थितः ।
सत्यवागनसूयुश्च शीलवानभिसंश्रितः ॥१०॥
10. yajvā dānaruciḥ kṣānto vṛtte ca parame sthitaḥ ,
satyavāganasūyuśca śīlavānabhisaṁśritaḥ.
10. yajvā dānaruciḥ kṣāntaḥ vṛtte ca parame sthitaḥ
satyavāk anasūyuḥ ca śīlavān abhisaṃśritaḥ
10. yajvā dānaruciḥ kṣāntaḥ ca parame vṛtte sthitaḥ
satyavāk ca anasūyuḥ śīlavān abhisaṃśritaḥ
10. He is a performer of Vedic rituals (yajva), fond of giving (dāna), patient, established in the highest conduct, truthful in speech, free from envy, of good moral character, and widely respected.
शेषान्नभोक्ता वचनानुकूलो हितार्जवोत्कृष्टकृताकृतज्ञः ।
अवैरकृद्भूतहिते नियुक्तो गङ्गाह्रदाम्भोऽभिजनोपपन्नः ॥११॥
11. śeṣānnabhoktā vacanānukūlo; hitārjavotkṛṣṭakṛtākṛtajñaḥ ,
avairakṛdbhūtahite niyukto; gaṅgāhradāmbho'bhijanopapannaḥ.
11. śeṣānnabhoktā vacanānukūlaḥ hitārjavotkṛṣṭakṛtākṛtajñaḥ
avairakṛt bhūtahite niyuktaḥ gaṅgāhradāmbhaḥ abhijanopapannaḥ
11. śeṣānnabhoktā vacanānukūlaḥ hitārjavotkṛṣṭakṛtākṛtajñaḥ
avairakṛt bhūtahite niyuktaḥ gaṅgāhradāmbhaḥ abhijanopapannaḥ
11. He partakes only of remnants, is agreeable in his words, discerning of what is beneficial, straightforward, and excellent, and knowledgeable about both accomplished and unaccomplished deeds. He creates no enmity, is dedicated to the well-being of all creatures, and is endowed with a noble lineage originating from the waters of the Gaṅgā lake.
