रोचमानो महाराज पाण्डवानां महारथः ।
योत्स्यतेऽमरवत्संख्ये परसैन्येषु भारत ॥१॥

1. Bhīṣma said: O great king, the illustrious great chariot-warrior of the Pāṇḍavas will fight in battle among the enemy forces like an immortal, O Bhārata.
पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च महेष्वासो महाबलः ।
मातुलो भीमसेनस्य स च मेऽतिरथो मतः ॥२॥
2. purujitkuntibhojaśca maheṣvāso mahābalaḥ ,
mātulo bhīmasenasya sa ca me'tiratho mataḥ.

mātulaḥ bhīmasenasya saḥ ca me atirathaḥ mataḥ

2. Purujit and Kuntibhoja - a great archer, mighty warrior, and maternal uncle of Bhimasena - he is considered a mighty (atiratha) warrior by me.
एष वीरो महेष्वासः कृती च निपुणश्च ह ।
चित्रयोधी च शक्तश्च मतो मे रथपुंगवः ॥३॥
3. eṣa vīro maheṣvāsaḥ kṛtī ca nipuṇaśca ha ,
citrayodhī ca śaktaśca mato me rathapuṁgavaḥ.
3. eṣaḥ vīraḥ mahā iṣvāsaḥ kṛtī ca nipuṇaḥ ca ha
citrayodhī ca śaktaḥ ca mataḥ me rathapuṅgavaḥ
3. eṣaḥ vīraḥ,
mahā iṣvāsaḥ,
kṛtī ca nipuṇaḥ ca ha,
citrayodhī ca śaktaḥ ca,
me rathapuṅgavaḥ mataḥ.
3. This hero, a great archer, is indeed accomplished and skillful. He is also a versatile (citrayodhī) and capable fighter, and he is considered by me to be a foremost (rathapuṅgava) chariot-fighter.
स योत्स्यति हि विक्रम्य मघवानिव दानवैः ।
योधाश्चास्य परिख्याताः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥४॥
4. sa yotsyati hi vikramya maghavāniva dānavaiḥ ,
yodhāścāsya parikhyātāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ.
4. saḥ yotsyati hi vikramya maghavān iva dānavaiḥ
yodhāḥ ca asya parikhyātāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ
4. saḥ hi maghavān iva dānavaiḥ vikramya yotsyati.
ca asya sarve parikhyātāḥ yodhāḥ yuddhaviśāradāḥ.
4. He will certainly fight valiantly, just like Indra (maghavān) fights against the Danavas. And all of his famed warriors are experts in warfare.
भागिनेयकृते वीरः स करिष्यति संगरे ।
सुमहत्कर्म पाण्डूनां स्थितः प्रियहिते नृपः ॥५॥
5. bhāgineyakṛte vīraḥ sa kariṣyati saṁgare ,
sumahatkarma pāṇḍūnāṁ sthitaḥ priyahite nṛpaḥ.
5. bhāgineyakṛte vīraḥ saḥ kariṣyati saṅgare
sumahatkarma pāṇḍūnām sthitaḥ priyahite nṛpaḥ
5. saḥ vīraḥ nṛpaḥ,
priyahite sthitaḥ,
bhāgineyakṛte ca pāṇḍūnām,
saṅgare sumahatkarma kariṣyati.
5. That hero, the king, who stands firm in what is dear and beneficial, will perform a very great deed (karma) in battle for his nephew's sake and for the Pandavas.
भैमसेनिर्महाराज हैडिम्बो राक्षसेश्वरः ।
मतो मे बहुमायावी रथयूथपयूथपः ॥६॥
6. bhaimasenirmahārāja haiḍimbo rākṣaseśvaraḥ ,
mato me bahumāyāvī rathayūthapayūthapaḥ.
6. bhīmaseniḥ mahārāja haiḍimbaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
mataḥ me bahumāyāvī rathayūthapayūthapaḥ
6. mahārāja,
bhīmaseniḥ haiḍimbaḥ rākṣaseśvaraḥ bahumāyāvī rathayūthapayūthapaḥ me mataḥ.
6. O great King, the son of Bhīmasena, Ghaṭotkaca (haiḍimba), the lord of rākṣasas, is considered by me to be exceedingly skilled in illusion (māyā) and the chief among the commanders of chariot divisions.
योत्स्यते समरे तात मायाभिः समरप्रियः ।
ये चास्य राक्षसाः शूराः सचिवा वशवर्तिनः ॥७॥
7. yotsyate samare tāta māyābhiḥ samarapriyaḥ ,
ye cāsya rākṣasāḥ śūrāḥ sacivā vaśavartinaḥ.
7. yotsyate samare tāta māyābhiḥ samarapriyaḥ ye
ca asya rākṣasāḥ śūrāḥ sacivāḥ vaśavartinaḥ
7. tāta,
samarapriyaḥ (saḥ) samare māyābhiḥ yotsyate.
ca ye asya śūrāḥ rākṣasāḥ sacivāḥ vaśavartinaḥ (santi).
7. O dear one (tāta), he, being fond of battle (samarapriya), will fight in this conflict (samare) using his illusions (māyā). And those brave rākṣasas who are his ministers and are obedient (vaśavartinaḥ) to him...
एते चान्ये च बहवो नानाजनपदेश्वराः ।
समेताः पाण्डवस्यार्थे वासुदेवपुरोगमाः ॥८॥
8. ete cānye ca bahavo nānājanapadeśvarāḥ ,
sametāḥ pāṇḍavasyārthe vāsudevapurogamāḥ.
8. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ
sametāḥ pāṇḍavasya arthe vāsudevapuroragamāḥ
8. ca ete ca anye bahavaḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ vāsudevapuroragamāḥ pāṇḍavasya arthe sametāḥ (santi).
8. And these, along with many other lords of various countries, have assembled for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, with Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) at their head.
एते प्राधान्यतो राजन्पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ।
रथाश्चातिरथाश्चैव ये चाप्यर्धरथा मताः ॥९॥
9. ete prādhānyato rājanpāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
rathāścātirathāścaiva ye cāpyardharathā matāḥ.
9. ete prādhānyataḥ rājan pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ rathāḥ
ca atirathāḥ ca eva ye ca api ardharathāḥ matāḥ
9. rājan,
ete prādhānyataḥ mahātmanaḥ pāṇḍavasya rathāḥ ca,
atirathāḥ ca eva,
ye ca api ardharathāḥ,
matāḥ (santi).
9. O King (rājan), these are primarily considered the great-souled Pāṇḍava's (mahātmanaḥ) chariot warriors, as well as the 'atirathas' (great chariot warriors) and those who are deemed 'ardharathas' (half-chariot warriors).
नेष्यन्ति समरे सेनां भीमां यौधिष्ठिरीं नृप ।
महेन्द्रेणेव वीरेण पाल्यमानां किरीटिना ॥१०॥
10. neṣyanti samare senāṁ bhīmāṁ yaudhiṣṭhirīṁ nṛpa ,
mahendreṇeva vīreṇa pālyamānāṁ kirīṭinā.
10. na iṣyanti samare senām bhīmām yauudhiṣṭhirīm
nṛpa mahendreṇa iva vīreṇa pālyamānām kirīṭinā
10. nṛpa kirīṭinā vīreṇa mahendreṇa iva pālyamānām
yauudhiṣṭhirīm bhīmām senām samare na iṣyanti
10. O King, they will not be able to lead Yudhiṣṭhira's formidable army in battle, an army that is being protected by Arjuna (kirīṭin) like a heroic army protected by Mahendra (Indra).
तैरहं समरे वीर त्वामायद्भिर्जयैषिभिः ।
योत्स्यामि जयमाकाङ्क्षन्नथ वा निधनं रणे ॥११॥
11. tairahaṁ samare vīra tvāmāyadbhirjayaiṣibhiḥ ,
yotsyāmi jayamākāṅkṣannatha vā nidhanaṁ raṇe.
11. taiḥ aham samare vīra tvām āyat-bhiḥ jaya-eṣibhiḥ
yotsyāmi jayam ākaṅkṣan atha vā nidhanam raṇe
11. vīra aham taiḥ tvām āyat-bhiḥ jaya-eṣibhiḥ samare
jayam vā atha raṇe nidhanam ākaṅkṣan yotsyāmi
11. O hero, I will fight them in battle - those who are coming against you, seeking victory (jaya) - desiring either victory (jaya) or death (nidhana) in the conflict.
पार्थं च वासुदेवं च चक्रगाण्डीवधारिणौ ।
संध्यागताविवार्केन्दू समेष्ये पुरुषोत्तमौ ॥१२॥
12. pārthaṁ ca vāsudevaṁ ca cakragāṇḍīvadhāriṇau ,
saṁdhyāgatāvivārkendū sameṣye puruṣottamau.
12. pārtham ca vāsudevam ca cakra-gāṇḍīva-dhāriṇau
sandhyā-agatau iva arka-indū sam-eṣye puruṣa-uttamau
12. aham cakra-gāṇḍīva-dhāriṇau puruṣa-uttamau pārtham ca
vāsudevam ca sandhyā-agatau arka-indū iva sam-eṣye
12. I will encounter Pārtha (Arjuna) and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the two supreme persons (puruṣottama) who wield the discus and the Gāṇḍīva bow, just as the sun and moon meet at twilight.
ये चैव ते रथोदाराः पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकाः ।
सहसैन्यानहं तांश्च प्रतीयां रणमूर्धनि ॥१३॥
13. ye caiva te rathodārāḥ pāṇḍuputrasya sainikāḥ ,
sahasainyānahaṁ tāṁśca pratīyāṁ raṇamūrdhani.
13. ye ca eva te ratha-udārāḥ pāṇḍu-putrasya sainikāḥ
saha-sainyān aham tān ca pratīyām raṇa-mūrdhani
13. ca eva aham raṇa-mūrdhani ye te pāṇḍu-putrasya
ratha-udārāḥ sainikāḥ tān ca saha-sainyān pratīyām
13. And I will confront those illustrious chariot-warriors, the soldiers of Pāṇḍu's son, along with their armies, at the forefront of the battle.
एते रथाश्चातिरथाश्च तुभ्यं यथाप्रधानं नृप कीर्तिता मया ।
तथा राजन्नर्धरथाश्च केचित्तथैव तेषामपि कौरवेन्द्र ॥१४॥
14. ete rathāścātirathāśca tubhyaṁ; yathāpradhānaṁ nṛpa kīrtitā mayā ,
tathā rājannardharathāśca keci;ttathaiva teṣāmapi kauravendra.
14. ete rathāḥ ca atirathāḥ ca tubhyaṃ
yathāpradhānam nṛpa kīrtitāḥ mayā
tathā rājan ardharathāḥ ca kecit
tathaiva teṣām api kauravendra
14. nṛpa tubhyaṃ mayā ete rathāḥ ca atirathāḥ ca yathāpradhānam kīrtitāḥ.
rājan kauravendra tathā tathaiva teṣām api kecit ardharathāḥ ca.
14. O king (nṛpa), these charioteers and supreme charioteers have been enumerated by me for you according to their prominence. And similarly, O chief of the Kurus (kauravendra), some half-charioteers (ardharatha) among them have also been mentioned.
अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च ये चान्ये तत्र पार्थिवाः ।
सर्वानावारयिष्यामि यावद्द्रक्ष्यामि भारत ॥१५॥
15. arjunaṁ vāsudevaṁ ca ye cānye tatra pārthivāḥ ,
sarvānāvārayiṣyāmi yāvaddrakṣyāmi bhārata.
15. arjunam vāsudevam ca ye ca anye tatra pārthivāḥ
sarvān āvārayiṣyāmi yāvat drakṣyāmi bhārata
15. bhārata aham arjunam ca vāsudevam ca ye ca anye tatra pārthivāḥ sarvān yāvat drakṣyāmi (tāvat) āvārayiṣyāmi.
15. O Bhārata, I will ward off Arjuna, and Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), and all other kings (pārthiva) who are there, as long as I see them.
पाञ्चाल्यं तु महाबाहो नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम् ।
उद्यतेषुमभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रतियुध्यन्तमाहवे ॥१६॥
16. pāñcālyaṁ tu mahābāho nāhaṁ hanyāṁ śikhaṇḍinam ,
udyateṣumabhiprekṣya pratiyudhyantamāhave.
16. pāñcālyam tu mahābāho na aham hanyām śikhaṇḍinam
udyateṣum abhiprekṣya pratiyudhyantam āhave
16. mahābāho tu aham pāñcālyam śikhaṇḍinam udyateṣum abhiprekṣya āhave pratiyudhyantam api na hanyām.
16. But, O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), I would not strike Śikhaṇḍin, the Pāñcāla, even after seeing him with uplifted arrows and fighting back in battle (āhava).
लोकस्तद्वेद यदहं पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
प्राप्तं राज्यं परित्यज्य ब्रह्मचर्ये धृतव्रतः ॥१७॥
17. lokastadveda yadahaṁ pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā ,
prāptaṁ rājyaṁ parityajya brahmacarye dhṛtavrataḥ.
17. lokaḥ tat veda yat aham pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā
prāptam rājyam parityajya brahmacarye dhṛtavrataḥ
17. lokaḥ tat veda yat aham pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā prāptam rājyam parityajya brahmacarye dhṛtavrataḥ (āsīt).
17. The world knows that, out of a desire to please my father, I abandoned the kingdom (rājya) I had obtained and maintained a vow of celibacy (brahmacarya).
चित्राङ्गदं कौरवाणामहं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ।
विचित्रवीर्यं च शिशुं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥१८॥
18. citrāṅgadaṁ kauravāṇāmahaṁ rājye'bhyaṣecayam ,
vicitravīryaṁ ca śiśuṁ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayam.
18. citrāṅgadam kauravāṇām aham rājye abhīṣecayam
vicitravīryam ca śiśum yauvarājye abhīṣecayam
18. aham citrāṅgadam kauravāṇām rājye abhīṣecayam
ca śiśum vicitravīryam yauvarājye abhīṣecayam
18. I consecrated Citrāṅgada to the sovereignty of the Kurus, and I also consecrated the child Vicitravīrya to the position of crown prince.
देवव्रतत्वं विख्याप्य पृथिव्यां सर्वराजसु ।
नैव हन्यां स्त्रियं जातु न स्त्रीपूर्वं कथंचन ॥१९॥
19. devavratatvaṁ vikhyāpya pṛthivyāṁ sarvarājasu ,
naiva hanyāṁ striyaṁ jātu na strīpūrvaṁ kathaṁcana.
19. devavratatvam vikhyāpya pṛthivyām sarvarājasu na
eva hanyām striyam jātu na strīpūrvam kathaṃcana
19. sarvarājasu pṛthivyām devavratatvam vikhyāpya aham jātu
striyam na eva hanyām na ca strīpūrvam kathaṃcana hanyām
19. Having proclaimed my vow (devavrata) across the earth to all kings, I shall certainly never kill a woman, nor anyone who was formerly a woman, by any means.
स हि स्त्रीपूर्वको राजञ्शिखण्डी यदि ते श्रुतः ।
कन्या भूत्वा पुमाञ्जातो न योत्स्ये तेन भारत ॥२०॥
20. sa hi strīpūrvako rājañśikhaṇḍī yadi te śrutaḥ ,
kanyā bhūtvā pumāñjāto na yotsye tena bhārata.
20. saḥ hi strīpūrvakaḥ rājan śikhaṇḍī yadi te śrutaḥ
kanyā bhūtvā pumān jātaḥ na yotsye tena bhārata
20. rājan bhārata hi yadi te saḥ śikhaṇḍī strīpūrvakaḥ
śrutaḥ (asti) kanyā bhūtvā pumān jātaḥ tena na yotsye
20. Indeed, O King, if you have heard of that Śikhaṇḍī, he was formerly a woman. Having been born as a man after being a maiden, I shall not fight with him, O Bhārata.
सर्वांस्त्वन्यान्हनिष्यामि पार्थिवान्भरतर्षभ ।
यान्समेष्यामि समरे न तु कुन्तीसुतान्नृप ॥२१॥
21. sarvāṁstvanyānhaniṣyāmi pārthivānbharatarṣabha ,
yānsameṣyāmi samare na tu kuntīsutānnṛpa.
21. sarvān tu anyān haniṣyāmi pārthivān bharatarṣabha
yān sameṣyāmi samare na tu kuntīsutān nṛpa
21. bharatarṣabha nṛpa tu aham samare yān anyān sarvān pārthivān
sameṣyāmi (tān) haniṣyāmi tu kuntīsutān na (haniṣyāmi)
21. However, O best among the Bhāratas, I shall kill all other kings whom I encounter in battle, but not the sons of Kuntī, O King.
