9.
O Arjuna, I shall perform an action (karma) more remarkable than whatever excellent deed you have accomplished, in the sight of all people. Do not yourself feel astonishment (vismaya) in your mind (ātmanā).

Karṇa said, "This arena is common to all; what is your concern here, Arjuna (Phālguna)? Kṣatriyas are superior in valor, and power (bala) is indeed aligned with natural law (dharma)."

Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvan (Śāradvata), an expert in the conduct of single combat and a knower of all principles of righteous conduct (dharma), spoke to those two who had raised their mighty bows.

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, at that very moment, Karṇa, the great warrior (mahāratha), was consecrated in the Anga kingdom on a golden seat by priests (mantravidbhiḥ) who knew the sacred incantations, using golden pitchers filled with parched rice and flowers. He, mighty and endowed with splendor, was thus installed.

Karṇa said: 'What equivalent can I give you for this bestowal of a kingdom? Tell me, O tiger among kings (rājaśārdūla), for I am certainly ready to act accordingly, O king!' To him, that Suyodhana (Duryodhana) then said: 'I desire your ultimate friendship.'
