The Dānavas said: "O Suyodhana, King of Kings, upholder of the Bhāratas' lineage! You are always surrounded by heroes and by great-souled ones."

2.
Why have you undertaken this rash act of a fast unto death? Indeed, one who abandons their own self (ātman) goes to a degraded state and incurs public blame and dishonor.

Indeed, wise individuals like you do not engage in actions (karma) that are detrimental to their objective, fraught with many dangers, and utterly ruinous.

O King, restrain this mindset of yours, which destroys righteousness (dharma), prosperity, and happiness; which annihilates fame, prowess, and courage; and which increases the joy of your enemies.

O Lord (prabho) and King (nṛpa), listen to the truth, the divine nature of the self (ātman), and the constitution of the body. Then, from that understanding, attain fortitude.

In the past, you were obtained by us through our ascetic practice (tapas) from the great lord (Maheśvara). Your entire upper body was created from masses of diamonds.

And your lower body, O sinless one, was made invulnerable to missiles and weapons. It was fashioned from flowers by the Goddess, and in its form, it is captivating to women.

Thus, O best of kings, your body is endowed by the Lord (Īśvara) and the Goddess. O tiger among kings, you are indeed divine, not merely human.

Therefore, enough of your despondency; there is no fear for you. Indeed, for your assistance, heroic daemons (dānava) have taken birth on this earth.

O best of Kurus, they will engage in battle, striking (their kin), devoid of affection, possessed by daemons (dānava), with their inner self (antarātman) completely overwhelmed.

14.
The best of men, whose minds are tainted and who are utterly bewildered by a lack of understanding, will joyfully attack their kinsmen, having completely cast off all affection. This will occur due to a destiny (daiva) ordained by divine ordinance.

And speaking to each other, boasting, 'You will not escape alive from me!', they will, O best of Kurus, stand firm in their valor (pauruṣa), unleashing all kinds of weapons and missiles, and will cause the annihilation of people.

The mighty-armed one, having been released by them, was again brought back by that very kṛtyā (magical being) to the same place where he had previously sat down to undertake a fast unto death.

After placing that hero back and the kṛtyā (magical being) having worshipped him respectfully, she (the kṛtyā), having been permitted by the king, vanished right there.

Then, when she (the kṛtyā) had departed, King Duryodhana, O Bhārata, considered all this to be like a dream. His resolve then became: "I shall conquer the Pāṇḍavas in battle."

Thus, O best among the Bharatas, that evil-minded son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra had a firm hope for the complete defeat of the Pāṇḍavas.

O lord of men, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others, whose minds were overcome by demonic (dānava) influence, were not so affectionate towards the sons of Pandu. King Suyodhana (Duryodhana) did not disclose this to anyone.

A dead person does not conquer enemies; a living person experiences prosperity. O Kaurava, how can there be prosperity for the dead? How can there be victory? Now is not the time for sorrow, fear, or death.

That great-armed one (Karna), embracing him with both arms, said to him: 'Arise, O King! Why are you lying down? O destroyer of enemies, why do you grieve? After having tormented your enemies with your valor, how can you wish to die?'

Thus addressed by Karṇa, and also moved by the words of the Daityas and the obeisances of others, Suyodhana (Duryodhana) stood up, having heard the Daityas' words and firmly fixed his resolve in his heart.
