भीष्म उवाच ।
प्राचेतसस्य वचनं कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः ।
यस्याः किंचिन्नाददते ज्ञातयो न स विक्रयः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
prācetasasya vacanaṁ kīrtayanti purāvidaḥ ,
yasyāḥ kiṁcinnādadate jñātayo na sa vikrayaḥ.

1. Bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
purāvidaḥ prācetasasya vacanam kīrtayanti: yasyāḥ jñātayaḥ kiñcit na ādadate,
saḥ na vikrayaḥ.
1. Bhishma said: 'Experts in ancient traditions (purāvidaḥ) recount the statement of Pracetas: "That is not a sale if the kinsmen (jñātayaḥ) do not accept anything (as payment) from her."'
अर्हणं तत्कुमारीणामानृशंस्यतमं च तत् ।
सर्वं च प्रतिदेयं स्यात्कन्यायै तदशेषतः ॥२॥
2. arhaṇaṁ tatkumārīṇāmānṛśaṁsyatamaṁ ca tat ,
sarvaṁ ca pratideyaṁ syātkanyāyai tadaśeṣataḥ.
2. arhaṇam tat kumārīṇām ānṛśaṃsyatamam ca tat
sarvam ca pratideyam syāt kanyāyai tat aśeṣataḥ
2. tat kumārīṇām arhaṇam ca tat ānṛśaṃsyatamam.
ca sarvam tat aśeṣataḥ kanyāyai pratideyam syāt.
2. That (which is given for the bride, rather than her kinsmen) is an offering of honor to maidens and is the most benevolent act. Moreover, all of it should be returned completely to the maiden (kanyā) herself.
पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिश्चैव श्वशुरैरथ देवरैः ।
पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च बहुकल्याणमीप्सुभिः ॥३॥
3. pitṛbhirbhrātṛbhiścaiva śvaśurairatha devaraiḥ ,
pūjyā lālayitavyāśca bahukalyāṇamīpsubhiḥ.
3. pitṛbhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca eva śvaśuraiḥ atha devaraiḥ
| pūjyāḥ lālayitavyāḥ ca bahu-kalyāṇam īpsubhiḥ
3. By fathers, brothers, fathers-in-law, and indeed by brothers-in-law, women should be honored and cherished by those who desire great prosperity.
यदि वै स्त्री न रोचेत पुमांसं न प्रमोदयेत् ।
अमोदनात्पुनः पुंसः प्रजनं न प्रवर्धते ॥४॥
4. yadi vai strī na roceta pumāṁsaṁ na pramodayet ,
amodanātpunaḥ puṁsaḥ prajanaṁ na pravardhate.
4. yadi vai strī na roceta pumāṃsam na pramodayet
| amodanāt punaḥ puṃsaḥ prajanam na pravardhate
4. If indeed a woman does not find favor, she will not delight a man. And from a man's lack of delight, procreation does not thrive.
पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च स्त्रियो नित्यं जनाधिप ।
अपूजिताश्च यत्रैताः सर्वास्तत्राफलाः क्रियाः ।
तदैव तत्कुलं नास्ति यदा शोचन्ति जामयः ॥५॥
5. pūjyā lālayitavyāśca striyo nityaṁ janādhipa ,
apūjitāśca yatraitāḥ sarvāstatrāphalāḥ kriyāḥ ,
tadaiva tatkulaṁ nāsti yadā śocanti jāmayaḥ.
5. pūjyāḥ lālayitavyāḥ ca striyaḥ nityam
janādhipa | apūjitāḥ ca yatra etāḥ
sarvāḥ tatra aphalāḥ kriyāḥ | tadā eva
tat kulam na asti yadā śocanti jāmayaḥ
5. O lord of men, women should always be honored and cherished. Where these [women] are not honored, all actions there are fruitless. Indeed, that family (kula) ceases to exist when the female relatives grieve.
जामीशप्तानि गेहानि निकृत्तानीव कृत्यया ।
नैव भान्ति न वर्धन्ते श्रिया हीनानि पार्थिव ॥६॥
6. jāmīśaptāni gehāni nikṛttānīva kṛtyayā ,
naiva bhānti na vardhante śriyā hīnāni pārthiva.
6. jāmī-śaptāni gehāni nikṛttāni iva kṛtyayā | na
eva bhānti na vardhante śriyā hīnāni pārthiva
6. O ruler (pārthiva), houses cursed by female relatives are like those cut down by a magical rite (kṛtyā); they neither shine nor prosper, being devoid of prosperity.
स्त्रियः पुंसां परिददे मनुर्जिगमिषुर्दिवम् ।
अबलाः स्वल्पकौपीनाः सुहृदः सत्यजिष्णवः ॥७॥
7. striyaḥ puṁsāṁ paridade manurjigamiṣurdivam ,
abalāḥ svalpakaupīnāḥ suhṛdaḥ satyajiṣṇavaḥ.
7. striyaḥ puṃsāṃ paridade manuḥ jigamiṣuḥ divam
abalāḥ svalpakaupīnāḥ suhṛdaḥ satyajiṣṇavaḥ
7. Manu, desiring to ascend to heaven, entrusted women to men. He described them as vulnerable, having meager resources, yet being true friends and those who prevail through truth.
ईर्ष्यवो मानकामाश्च चण्डा असुहृदोऽबुधाः ।
स्त्रियो माननमर्हन्ति ता मानयत मानवाः ॥८॥
8. īrṣyavo mānakāmāśca caṇḍā asuhṛdo'budhāḥ ,
striyo mānanamarhanti tā mānayata mānavāḥ.
8. īrṣyavaḥ mānakāmāḥ ca caṇḍā asuhṛdaḥ abudhāḥ
striyaḥ mānanām arhanti tāḥ mānayata mānavāḥ
8. They can be jealous, desirous of honor, fierce, unfriendly, and ignorant. Yet, women deserve honor. Therefore, O humans, honor them.
स्त्रीप्रत्ययो हि वो धर्मो रतिभोगाश्च केवलाः ।
परिचर्यान्नसंस्कारास्तदायत्ता भवन्तु वः ॥९॥
9. strīpratyayo hi vo dharmo ratibhogāśca kevalāḥ ,
paricaryānnasaṁskārāstadāyattā bhavantu vaḥ.
9. strīpratyayaḥ hi vaḥ dharmaḥ ratibhogāḥ ca kevalāḥ
paricaryānnasaṃskārāḥ tat āyattāḥ bhavantu vaḥ
9. Indeed, your social constitution (dharma) is founded upon women, and they are also the exclusive source of loving enjoyments. Therefore, for you, let the rites of service and food preparation be dependent on them.
उत्पादनमपत्यस्य जातस्य परिपालनम् ।
प्रीत्यर्थं लोकयात्रा च पश्यत स्त्रीनिबन्धनम् ॥१०॥
10. utpādanamapatyasya jātasya paripālanam ,
prītyarthaṁ lokayātrā ca paśyata strīnibandhanam.
10. utpādanam apatyasya jātasya paripālanam
prītyartham lokayātrā ca paśyata strīnibandhanam
10. The procreation of children, the nurturing of those born, and the continuation of worldly life for the sake of affection - observe that all this is founded upon women.
संमान्यमानाश्चैताभिः सर्वकार्याण्यवाप्स्यथ ।
विदेहराजदुहिता चात्र श्लोकमगायत ॥११॥
11. saṁmānyamānāścaitābhiḥ sarvakāryāṇyavāpsyatha ,
videharājaduhitā cātra ślokamagāyata.
11. saṃmānyamānāḥ ca etābhiḥ sarvakāryāṇi avāpsyatha
videharājaduhitā ca atra ślokam agāyata
11. etābhiḥ ca saṃmānyamānāḥ sarvakāryāṇi avāpsyatha
ca atra videharājaduhitā ślokam agāyata
11. Being honored by these women, you will accomplish all your tasks. And concerning this matter, the daughter of the king of Videha chanted a verse.
नास्ति यज्ञः स्त्रियः कश्चिन्न श्राद्धं नोपवासकम् ।
धर्मस्तु भर्तृशुश्रूषा तया स्वर्गं जयत्युत ॥१२॥
12. nāsti yajñaḥ striyaḥ kaścinna śrāddhaṁ nopavāsakam ,
dharmastu bhartṛśuśrūṣā tayā svargaṁ jayatyuta.
12. na asti yajñaḥ striyaḥ kaścit na śrāddham na upavāsakam
dharmaḥ tu bhartṛśuśrūṣā tayā svargam jayati uta
12. striyaḥ kaścit yajñaḥ na asti na śrāddham na upavāsakam
tu dharmaḥ bhartṛśuśrūṣā tayā uta svargam jayati
12. For a woman, there is no specific (Vedic ritual) (yajña), no obsequial rite (śrāddha), and no fasting. However, her true constitution (dharma) is the devoted service to her husband; by that, she indeed attains heaven.
पिता रक्षति कौमारे भर्ता रक्षति यौवने ।
पुत्रास्तु स्थविरीभावे न स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane ,
putrāstu sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryamarhati.
13. pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane putrāḥ
tu sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhati
13. pitā kaumāre rakṣati bhartā yauvane rakṣati tu
putrāḥ sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhati
13. A father protects a woman in her childhood, a husband protects her in her youth, and her sons protect her in old age. Indeed, a woman does not deserve independence.
श्रिय एताः स्त्रियो नाम सत्कार्या भूतिमिच्छता ।
लालिता निगृहीता च स्त्री श्रीर्भवति भारत ॥१४॥
14. śriya etāḥ striyo nāma satkāryā bhūtimicchatā ,
lālitā nigṛhītā ca strī śrīrbhavati bhārata.
14. śriyaḥ etāḥ striyaḥ nāma satkāryāḥ bhūtim icchatā
lālitā nigṛhītā ca strī śrīḥ bhavati bhārata
14. etāḥ striyaḥ nāma śriyaḥ bhūtim icchatā satkāryāḥ
ca lālitā nigṛhītā strī śrīḥ bhavati bhārata
14. These women are indeed manifestations of prosperity (śrī), and they should be honored by anyone desiring well-being. A woman, when cherished and properly guided, becomes a source of auspiciousness (śrī), O Bhārata.
