वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सैवं विलप्य करुणं सोन्मादेव तपस्विनी ।
उत्तरा न्यपतद्भूमौ कृपणा पुत्रगृद्धिनी ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
saivaṁ vilapya karuṇaṁ sonmādeva tapasvinī ,
uttarā nyapatadbhūmau kṛpaṇā putragṛddhinī.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca sā evam vilapya karuṇam sa unmāda
iva tapasvinī uttarā kṛpaṇā putragṛddhinī bhūmau nyapatat
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus lamented piteously, that wretched Uttarā, miserable and longing for her son, fell to the ground as if driven mad.
तां तु दृष्ट्वा निपतितां हतबन्धुपरिच्छदाम् ।
चुक्रोश कुन्ती दुःखार्ता सर्वाश्च भरतस्त्रियः ॥२॥
2. tāṁ tu dṛṣṭvā nipatitāṁ hatabandhuparicchadām ,
cukrośa kuntī duḥkhārtā sarvāśca bharatastriyaḥ.
2. tām tu dṛṣṭvā nipatitām hatabandhuparicchadām
cukrośa kuntī duḥkhārtā sarvāḥ ca bharatastriyaḥ
2. But seeing her fallen, with her kinsmen and family destroyed, Kuntī, afflicted by sorrow, and all the Bhārata women cried out.
मुहूर्तमिव तद्राजन्पाण्डवानां निवेशनम् ।
अप्रेक्षणीयमभवदार्तस्वरनिनादितम् ॥३॥
3. muhūrtamiva tadrājanpāṇḍavānāṁ niveśanam ,
aprekṣaṇīyamabhavadārtasvaranināditam.
3. muhūrtam iva tat rājan pāṇḍavānām niveśanam
aprekṣaṇīyam abhavat ārtasvaranināditam
3. O King, for a moment, that abode of the Pāṇḍavas became dreadful to behold, filled with sounds of lamentation.
सा मुहूर्तं च राजेन्द्र पुत्रशोकाभिपीडिता ।
कश्मलाभिहता वीर वैराटी त्वभवत्तदा ॥४॥
4. sā muhūrtaṁ ca rājendra putraśokābhipīḍitā ,
kaśmalābhihatā vīra vairāṭī tvabhavattadā.
4. sā muhūrtam ca rājendra putraśokābhipīḍitā
kaśmalābhihatā vīra vairāṭī tu abhavat tadā
4. And then, O King of kings, O hero, Uttarā, tormented by sorrow for her son, became overwhelmed by faintness for a moment.
प्रतिलभ्य तु सा संज्ञामुत्तरा भरतर्षभ ।
अङ्कमारोप्य तं पुत्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. pratilabhya tu sā saṁjñāmuttarā bharatarṣabha ,
aṅkamāropya taṁ putramidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
5. pratilabhya tu sā saṃjñām uttarā bharatarṣabha
aṅkam āropya tam putram idam vacanam abravīt
5. However, O best of the Bhāratas, Uttarā, having regained her consciousness, took that son onto her lap and spoke these words.
धर्मज्ञस्य सुतः संस्त्वमधर्ममवबुध्यसे ।
यस्त्वं वृष्णिप्रवीरस्य कुरुषे नाभिवादनम् ॥६॥
6. dharmajñasya sutaḥ saṁstvamadharmamavabudhyase ,
yastvaṁ vṛṣṇipravīrasya kuruṣe nābhivādanam.
6. dharmajñasya sutaḥ san tvam adharmam avabudhyase
yaḥ tvam vṛṣṇipravīrasya kuruṣe na abhivādanam
6. You, being the son of one who understands natural law (dharma), how is it that you now perceive unrighteousness (adharma) – you, who do not offer salutation to the foremost hero of the Vṛṣṇis (Kṛṣṇa)?
पुत्र गत्वा मम वचो ब्रूयास्त्वं पितरं तव ।
दुर्मरं प्राणिनां वीर काले प्राप्ते कथंचन ॥७॥
7. putra gatvā mama vaco brūyāstvaṁ pitaraṁ tava ,
durmaraṁ prāṇināṁ vīra kāle prāpte kathaṁcana.
7. putra gatvā mama vacas brūyāḥ tvam pitaram tava
durmaram prāṇinām vīra kāle prāpte kathañcana
7. putra gatvā mama vacas tava pitaram brūyāḥ
vīra kāle prāpte prāṇinām kathañcana durmaram
7. Son, go and convey my words to your father. O hero, for living beings, it is somehow difficult to avoid death once the destined time has arrived.
याहं त्वया विहीनाद्य पत्या पुत्रेण चैव ह ।
मर्तव्ये सति जीवामि हतस्वस्तिरकिंचना ॥८॥
8. yāhaṁ tvayā vihīnādya patyā putreṇa caiva ha ,
martavye sati jīvāmi hatasvastirakiṁcanā.
8. yā aham tvayā vihīnā adya patyā putreṇa ca eva
ha martavye sati jīvāmi hatasvastiḥ akiñcanā
8. yā aham adya tvayā putreṇa patyā ca eva ha
vihīnā martavye sati hatasvastiḥ akiñcanā jīvāmi
8. I, who today am bereft of you, my son, and my husband, indeed continue to live when I ought to die, having lost all well-being, utterly destitute.
अथ वा धर्मराज्ञाहमनुज्ञाता महाभुज ।
भक्षयिष्ये विषं तीक्ष्णं प्रवेक्ष्ये वा हुताशनम् ॥९॥
9. atha vā dharmarājñāhamanujñātā mahābhuja ,
bhakṣayiṣye viṣaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ pravekṣye vā hutāśanam.
9. atha vā dharmarājñā aham anujñātā mahābhuja
bhakṣayiṣye viṣam tīkṣṇam pravekṣye vā hutāśanam
9. atha vā mahābhuja aham dharmarājñā anujñātā
tīkṣṇam viṣam bhakṣayiṣye vā hutāśanam pravekṣye
9. Or else, O mighty-armed one, if I am permitted by Yama, the king of (dharma), I will consume potent poison or enter the fire.
अथ वा दुर्मरं तात यदिदं मे सहस्रधा ।
पतिपुत्रविहीनाया हृदयं न विदीर्यते ॥१०॥
10. atha vā durmaraṁ tāta yadidaṁ me sahasradhā ,
patiputravihīnāyā hṛdayaṁ na vidīryate.
10. atha vā durmaram tāta yat idam me sahasradhā
patiputravihīnāyā hṛdayam na vidīryate
10. atha vā tāta yat idam me patiputravihīnāyā
hṛdayam sahasradhā na vidīryate durmaram
10. Or else, O dear one, that my heart, of one bereft of husband and son, does not tear into a thousand pieces – this, indeed, is a difficult death (durmara).
उत्तिष्ठ पुत्र पश्येमां दुःखितां प्रपितामहीम् ।
आर्तामुपप्लुतां दीनां निमग्नां शोकसागरे ॥११॥
11. uttiṣṭha putra paśyemāṁ duḥkhitāṁ prapitāmahīm ,
ārtāmupaplutāṁ dīnāṁ nimagnāṁ śokasāgare.
11. uttiṣṭha putra paśya imām duḥkhitām prapitāmahīm
ārtām upaplutām dīnām nimagnām śokasāgare
11. Rise up, my son, and behold your great-grandmother, who is distressed, afflicted, overwhelmed, pitiable, and submerged in an ocean of grief.
आर्यां च पश्य पाञ्चालीं सात्वतीं च तपस्विनीम् ।
मां च पश्य सुदुःखार्तां व्याधविद्धां मृगीमिव ॥१२॥
12. āryāṁ ca paśya pāñcālīṁ sātvatīṁ ca tapasvinīm ,
māṁ ca paśya suduḥkhārtāṁ vyādhaviddhāṁ mṛgīmiva.
12. āryām ca paśya pāñcālīm sātvatīm ca tapasvinīm
mām ca paśya suduḥkhārtām vyādhaviddhām mṛgīm iva
12. And behold the noble Draupadī, the pious one, and behold me, greatly afflicted, like a female deer pierced by a hunter.
उत्तिष्ठ पश्य वदनं लोकनाथस्य धीमतः ।
पुण्डरीकपलाशाक्षं पुरेव चपलेक्षणम् ॥१३॥
13. uttiṣṭha paśya vadanaṁ lokanāthasya dhīmataḥ ,
puṇḍarīkapalāśākṣaṁ pureva capalekṣaṇam.
13. uttiṣṭha paśya vadanam lokanāthasya dhīmataḥ
puṇḍarīkapalāśākṣam purā iva capalekṣaṇam
13. Rise up, and behold the face of the wise lord of the world, whose eyes were like lotus petals and as vibrant as before.
एवं विप्रलपन्तीं तु दृष्ट्वा निपतितां पुनः ।
उत्तरां ताः स्त्रियः सर्वाः पुनरुत्थापयन्त्युत ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ vipralapantīṁ tu dṛṣṭvā nipatitāṁ punaḥ ,
uttarāṁ tāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ punarutthāpayantyuta.
14. evam vipralapantīm tu dṛṣṭvā nipatitām punaḥ
uttarām tāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ punaḥ utthāpayanti uta
14. Having seen Uttara thus lamenting and fallen down again, all those women then raised her up once more.
उत्थाय तु पुनर्धैर्यात्तदा मत्स्यपतेः सुता ।
प्राञ्जलिः पुण्डरीकाक्षं भूमावेवाभ्यवादयत् ॥१५॥
15. utthāya tu punardhairyāttadā matsyapateḥ sutā ,
prāñjaliḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ bhūmāvevābhyavādayat.
15. utthāya tu punaḥ dhairyāt tadā matsyapateḥ sutā
prāñjaliḥ puṇḍarīkākṣam bhūmāu eva abhyavādayat
15. tadā matsyapateḥ sutā punaḥ dhairyāt utthāya
prāñjaliḥ bhūmāu eva puṇḍarīkākṣam abhyavādayat
15. Then, the daughter of the Matsya king, regaining her courage, rose and, with folded hands, saluted the lotus-eyed one (Krishna) right there on the ground.
श्रुत्वा स तस्या विपुलं विलापं पुरुषर्षभः ।
उपस्पृश्य ततः कृष्णो ब्रह्मास्त्रं संजहार तत् ॥१६॥
16. śrutvā sa tasyā vipulaṁ vilāpaṁ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
upaspṛśya tataḥ kṛṣṇo brahmāstraṁ saṁjahāra tat.
16. śrutvā saḥ tasyāḥ vipulam vilāpam puruṣarṣabhaḥ
upaspṛśya tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ brahmāstram saṃjahāra tat
16. saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tasyāḥ vipulam vilāpam
śrutvā tataḥ upaspṛśya tat brahmāstram saṃjahāra
16. Having heard her extensive lamentation, Krishna, the best among men (puruṣarṣabha), then performed the ritual ablution (upaspṛśya) and withdrew that Brahmāstra.
प्रतिजज्ञे च दाशार्हस्तस्य जीवितमच्युतः ।
अब्रवीच्च विशुद्धात्मा सर्वं विश्रावयञ्जगत् ॥१७॥
17. pratijajñe ca dāśārhastasya jīvitamacyutaḥ ,
abravīcca viśuddhātmā sarvaṁ viśrāvayañjagat.
17. pratijajñe ca dāśārhaḥ tasya jīvitam acyutaḥ
abravīt ca viśuddhātmā sarvam viśrāvayan jagat
17. ca acyutaḥ dāśārhaḥ tasya jīvitam pratijajñe
ca viśuddhātmā sarvam jagat viśrāvayan abravīt
17. And the infallible (acyuta) descendant of Daśārha (Krishna) promised him life. And the pure-souled one said, proclaiming this to the entire world:
न ब्रवीम्युत्तरे मिथ्या सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति ।
एष संजीवयाम्येनं पश्यतां सर्वदेहिनाम् ॥१८॥
18. na bravīmyuttare mithyā satyametadbhaviṣyati ,
eṣa saṁjīvayāmyenaṁ paśyatāṁ sarvadehinām.
18. na bravīmi uttare mithyā satyam etat bhaviṣyati
eṣaḥ saṃjīvayāmi enam paśyatām sarvadehinām
18. uttare na mithyā bravīmi etat satyam bhaviṣyati
eṣaḥ sarvadehinām paśyatām enam saṃjīvayāmi
18. “O Uttara, I do not speak falsely; this will be the truth. I will revive him in the presence of all embodied beings.”
नोक्तपूर्वं मया मिथ्या स्वैरेष्वपि कदाचन ।
न च युद्धे परावृत्तस्तथा संजीवतामयम् ॥१९॥
19. noktapūrvaṁ mayā mithyā svaireṣvapi kadācana ,
na ca yuddhe parāvṛttastathā saṁjīvatāmayam.
19. na uktapūrvam mayā mithyā svaireṣu api kadācana
na ca yuddhe parāvṛttaḥ tathā saṃjīvatām ayam
19. mayā svaireṣu api kadācana mithyā uktapūrvam na
ca yuddhe parāvṛttaḥ na tathā ayam saṃjīvatām
19. I have never spoken a falsehood, not even in jest, nor have I ever retreated in battle. By the power of this truth, may this one be revived.
यथा मे दयितो धर्मो ब्राह्मणाश्च विशेषतः ।
अभिमन्योः सुतो जातो मृतो जीवत्वयं तथा ॥२०॥
20. yathā me dayito dharmo brāhmaṇāśca viśeṣataḥ ,
abhimanyoḥ suto jāto mṛto jīvatvayaṁ tathā.
20. yathā me dayitaḥ dharmaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ca viśeṣataḥ
abhimanyoḥ sutaḥ jātaḥ mṛtaḥ jīvatu ayam tathā
20. yathā me dharmaḥ dayitaḥ ca brāhmaṇāḥ viśeṣataḥ
tathā abhimanyoḥ jātaḥ mṛtaḥ sutaḥ ayam jīvatu
20. Just as the intrinsic nature (dharma) of righteousness is dear to me, and Brahmins are especially so, may this son of Abhimanyu, who was born dead, be revived.
यथाहं नाभिजानामि विजयेन कदाचन ।
विरोधं तेन सत्येन मृतो जीवत्वयं शिशुः ॥२१॥
21. yathāhaṁ nābhijānāmi vijayena kadācana ,
virodhaṁ tena satyena mṛto jīvatvayaṁ śiśuḥ.
21. yathā aham na abhijānāmi vijayena kadācana
virodham tena satyena mṛtaḥ jīvatu ayam śiśuḥ
21. yathā aham vijayena kadācana virodham na
abhijānāmi tena satyena mṛtaḥ ayam śiśuḥ jīvatu
21. Just as I have never experienced any animosity with Vijaya (Arjuna), by that truth, may this dead child be brought back to life.
यथा सत्यं च धर्मश्च मयि नित्यं प्रतिष्ठितौ ।
तथा मृतः शिशुरयं जीवतामभिमन्युजः ॥२२॥
22. yathā satyaṁ ca dharmaśca mayi nityaṁ pratiṣṭhitau ,
tathā mṛtaḥ śiśurayaṁ jīvatāmabhimanyujaḥ.
22. yathā satyam ca dharmaḥ ca mayi nityam pratiṣṭhitau
tathā mṛtaḥ śiśuḥ ayam jīvatām abhimanyujaḥ
22. yathā satyam ca dharmaḥ ca nityam mayi pratiṣṭhitau
tathā mṛtaḥ ayam śiśuḥ abhimanyujaḥ jīvatām
22. Just as truth and righteousness (dharma) are eternally established within me, so may this dead child, the son of Abhimanyu, be brought back to life.
यथा कंसश्च केशी च धर्मेण निहतौ मया ।
तेन सत्येन बालोऽयं पुनरुज्जीवतामिह ॥२३॥
23. yathā kaṁsaśca keśī ca dharmeṇa nihatau mayā ,
tena satyena bālo'yaṁ punarujjīvatāmiha.
23. yathā kaṃsaḥ ca keśī ca dharmeṇa nihatāu mayā
tena satyena bālaḥ ayam punaḥ ujjīvatām iha
23. yathā mayā dharmeṇa kaṃsaḥ ca keśī ca nihatāu,
tena satyena ayam bālaḥ iha punaḥ ujjīvatām
23. Just as Kamsa and Keśī were killed by me in accordance with natural law (dharma), by the power of that truth, may this child revive here again.
इत्युक्तो वासुदेवेन स बालो भरतर्षभ ।
शनैः शनैर्महाराज प्रास्पन्दत सचेतनः ॥२४॥
24. ityukto vāsudevena sa bālo bharatarṣabha ,
śanaiḥ śanairmahārāja prāspandata sacetanaḥ.
24. iti uktaḥ vāsudevena sa bālaḥ bharatarṣabha
śanaiḥ śanaiḥ mahārāja prāspandata sacetanaḥ
24. bharatarṣabha mahārāja,
iti vāsudevena uktaḥ sa bālaḥ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ sacetanaḥ prāspandata
24. O best among the Bharatas, O great king, when Vāsudeva had thus spoken, that child slowly began to stir, regaining consciousness.
