वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽभ्यचोदयत्कृष्णो युज्यतामिति दारुकम् ।
मुहूर्तादिव चाचष्ट युक्तमित्येव दारुकः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'bhyacodayatkṛṣṇo yujyatāmiti dārukam ,
muhūrtādiva cācaṣṭa yuktamityeva dārukaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Kṛṣṇa urged Dāruka, 'Let it be yoked!' Within a moment, Dāruka replied, 'It is indeed yoked.'
तथैव चानुयात्राणि चोदयामास पाण्डवः ।
सज्जयध्वं प्रयास्यामो नगरं गजसाह्वयम् ॥२॥
2. tathaiva cānuyātrāṇi codayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ ,
sajjayadhvaṁ prayāsyāmo nagaraṁ gajasāhvayam.
2. tathā eva ca anuyātrāṇi codayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ |
sajjayadhvam prayāsyāmaḥ nagaram gajasāhvayam
2. ca tathā eva pāṇḍavaḥ anuyātrāṇi codayāmāsa
"sajjayadhvam! gajasāhvayam nagaram prayāsyāmaḥ"
2. And in the same manner, the Pāṇḍava (pāṇḍava) urged his retinue: 'Prepare yourselves! We shall proceed to the city of Hastināpura.'
इत्युक्ताः सैनिकास्ते तु सज्जीभूता विशां पते ।
आचख्युः सज्जमित्येव पार्थायामिततेजसे ॥३॥
3. ityuktāḥ sainikāste tu sajjībhūtā viśāṁ pate ,
ācakhyuḥ sajjamityeva pārthāyāmitatejase.
3. iti uktāḥ sainikāḥ te tu sajjībhūtāḥ viśām pate
| ācakhvuḥ sajjjam iti eva pārthāya amitatejase
3. viśām pate,
iti uktāḥ te sainikāḥ tu sajjībhūtāḥ amitatejase pārthāya "sajjjam" iti eva ācakhvuḥ
3. O lord of men (viśām pate), those soldiers, thus addressed, became prepared. They then informed Pārtha, who possessed immeasurable splendor, 'It is ready.'
ततस्तौ रथमास्थाय प्रयातौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ।
विकुर्वाणौ कथाश्चित्राः प्रीयमाणौ विशां पते ॥४॥
4. tatastau rathamāsthāya prayātau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ,
vikurvāṇau kathāścitrāḥ prīyamāṇau viśāṁ pate.
4. tataḥ tau ratham āsthāya prayātau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
| vikurvāṇau kathāḥ citrāḥ prīyamāṇau viśām pate
4. viśām pate,
tataḥ tau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ratham āsthāya prayātau vikurvāṇau citrāḥ kathāḥ prīyamāṇau
4. O lord of men (viśām pate), then those two, Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍava (pāṇḍava), mounting the chariot, set forth. They exchanged varied and delightful stories, finding joy in their journey.
रथस्थं तु महातेजा वासुदेवं धनंजयः ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यमिदं भरतसत्तम ॥५॥
5. rathasthaṁ tu mahātejā vāsudevaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
punarevābravīdvākyamidaṁ bharatasattama.
5. rathastham tu mahātejāḥ vāsudevam dhanañjayaḥ
punar eva abravīt vākyam idam bharatasattama
5. he bharatasattama rathastham vāsudevam mahātejāḥ
dhanañjayaḥ tu punar eva idam vākyam abravīt
5. Then, O best of Bharatas, the greatly effulgent Dhanañjaya, seated on the chariot, spoke these words again to Vāsudeva.
त्वत्प्रसादाज्जयः प्राप्तो राज्ञा वृष्णिकुलोद्वह ।
निहताः शत्रवश्चापि प्राप्तं राज्यमकण्टकम् ॥६॥
6. tvatprasādājjayaḥ prāpto rājñā vṛṣṇikulodvaha ,
nihatāḥ śatravaścāpi prāptaṁ rājyamakaṇṭakam.
6. tvatprasādāt jayaḥ prāptaḥ rājñā vṛṣṇikulodvaha
nihatāḥ śatravaḥ ca api prāptam rājyam akaṇṭakam
6. he vṛṣṇikulodvaha tvatprasādāt rājñā jayaḥ prāptaḥ
ca api śatravaḥ nihatāḥ akaṇṭakam rājyam prāptam
6. By your grace, O upholder of the Vṛṣṇi lineage, victory has been achieved by the king; the enemies have been slain, and an undisputed kingdom has been secured.
नाथवन्तश्च भवता पाण्डवा मधुसूदन ।
भवन्तं प्लवमासाद्य तीर्णाः स्म कुरुसागरम् ॥७॥
7. nāthavantaśca bhavatā pāṇḍavā madhusūdana ,
bhavantaṁ plavamāsādya tīrṇāḥ sma kurusāgaram.
7. nāthavantaḥ ca bhavatā pāṇḍavāḥ madhusūdana
bhavantam plavam āsādya tīrṇāḥ sma kurusāgaram
7. he madhusūdana pāṇḍavāḥ ca bhavatā nāthavantaḥ
bhavantam plavam āsādya kurusāgaram tīrṇāḥ sma
7. And, O slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), the Pāṇḍavas, having you as their protector, and having found you as a boat, we have crossed the ocean of Kurus.
विश्वकर्मन्नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वात्मन्विश्वसंभव ।
यथाहं त्वा विजानामि यथा चाहं भवन्मनाः ॥८॥
8. viśvakarmannamaste'stu viśvātmanviśvasaṁbhava ,
yathāhaṁ tvā vijānāmi yathā cāhaṁ bhavanmanāḥ.
8. viśvakarman namas te astu viśvātman viśvasambhava
yathā aham tvā vijānāmi yathā ca aham bhavanmanāḥ
8. he viśvakarman te namaḥ astu he viśvātman he viśvasambhava
yathā aham tvā vijānāmi ca yathā aham bhavanmanāḥ
8. O architect of the universe (viśvakarman), salutations to you! O universal self (viśvātman), O origin of the universe (viśvasambhava)! Just as I know you, so too am I completely devoted to you.
त्वत्तेजःसंभवो नित्यं हुताशो मधुसूदन ।
रतिः क्रीडामयी तुभ्यं माया ते रोदसी विभो ॥९॥
9. tvattejaḥsaṁbhavo nityaṁ hutāśo madhusūdana ,
ratiḥ krīḍāmayī tubhyaṁ māyā te rodasī vibho.
9. tvattejaḥsaṃbhavaḥ nityaṃ hutāśaḥ madhusūdana
ratiḥ krīḍāmayī tubhyaṃ māyā te rodasī vibho
9. madhusūdana vibho tvattejaḥsaṃbhavaḥ hutāśaḥ nityaṃ [asti]
ratiḥ krīḍāmayī tubhyaṃ [asti] te māyā rodasī [asti]
9. O Madhusūdana, fire is eternally born from your splendor. O mighty Lord, playful delight is for you, and heaven and earth constitute your divine creative power (māyā).
त्वयि सर्वमिदं विश्वं यदिदं स्थाणुजङ्गमम् ।
त्वं हि सर्वं विकुरुषे भूतग्रामं सनातनम् ॥१०॥
10. tvayi sarvamidaṁ viśvaṁ yadidaṁ sthāṇujaṅgamam ,
tvaṁ hi sarvaṁ vikuruṣe bhūtagrāmaṁ sanātanam.
10. tvayi sarvam idam viśvaṃ yat idam sthāṇujaṅgamam
tvaṃ hi sarvaṃ vikuruṣe bhūtagrāmaṃ sanātanam
10. yat idam sthāṇujaṅgamam idam sarvam viśvaṃ tvayi
[asti] tvaṃ hi sarvaṃ sanātanam bhūtagrāmaṃ vikuruṣe
10. This entire universe, comprising all that is unmoving and moving, resides within you. Indeed, you eternally manifest all aggregates of beings.
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च तथा स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
हसितं तेऽमला ज्योत्स्ना ऋतवश्चेन्द्रियान्वयाः ॥११॥
11. pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca tathā sthāvarajaṅgamam ,
hasitaṁ te'malā jyotsnā ṛtavaścendriyānvayāḥ.
11. pṛthivīṃ ca antarikṣaṃ ca tathā sthāvarajaṅgamam
hasitaṃ te amalā jyotsnā ṛtavaḥ ca indriyānvayāḥ
11. te pṛthivīṃ ca antarikṣaṃ ca
tathā sthāvarajaṅgamam [ca asti]
te hasitaṃ amalā jyotsnā [asti]
ṛtavaḥ ca indriyānvayāḥ [asti]
11. Earth and the atmosphere, as well as all that is stationary and mobile, are your manifestations. Your laughter is pure moonlight, and the seasons are the connections of the senses.
प्राणो वायुः सततगः क्रोधो मृत्युः सनातनः ।
प्रसादे चापि पद्मा श्रीर्नित्यं त्वयि महामते ॥१२॥
12. prāṇo vāyuḥ satatagaḥ krodho mṛtyuḥ sanātanaḥ ,
prasāde cāpi padmā śrīrnityaṁ tvayi mahāmate.
12. prāṇaḥ vāyuḥ satatagaḥ krodhaḥ mṛtyuḥ sanātanaḥ
prasāde ca api padmā śrīḥ nityaṃ tvayi mahāmate
12. [he] mahāmate,
prāṇaḥ satatagaḥ vāyuḥ [asti],
krodhaḥ sanātanaḥ mṛtyuḥ [asti] ca api padmā śrīḥ nityaṃ tvayi prasāde [tiṣṭhati]
12. The vital breath (prāṇa) is the ever-moving air. Anger is eternal death. And indeed, O great-minded one, the lotus-born goddess Śrī eternally dwells within your grace (prasāda).
रतिस्तुष्टिर्धृतिः क्षान्तिस्त्वयि चेदं चराचरम् ।
त्वमेवेह युगान्तेषु निधनं प्रोच्यसेऽनघ ॥१३॥
13. ratistuṣṭirdhṛtiḥ kṣāntistvayi cedaṁ carācaram ,
tvameveha yugānteṣu nidhanaṁ procyase'nagha.
13. ratiḥ tuṣṭiḥ dhṛtiḥ kṣāntiḥ tvayi ca idam carācaram
tvam eva iha yugānteṣu nidhanam procyase anagha
13. tvayi ratiḥ tuṣṭiḥ dhṛtiḥ kṣāntiḥ ca idam carācaram
tvam eva iha yugānteṣu nidhanam anagha procyase
13. Delight, satisfaction, steadfastness, and forbearance are all found in you, and indeed this entire animate and inanimate world. You alone, O faultless one, are declared to be the dissolution at the end of all cosmic ages (yugas).
सुदीर्घेणापि कालेन न ते शक्या गुणा मया ।
आत्मा च परमो वक्तुं नमस्ते नलिनेक्षण ॥१४॥
14. sudīrgheṇāpi kālena na te śakyā guṇā mayā ,
ātmā ca paramo vaktuṁ namaste nalinekṣaṇa.
14. sudīrgheṇa api kālena na te śakyāḥ guṇāḥ mayā
ātmā ca paramaḥ vaktum namaḥ te nalinekṣaṇa
14. sudīrgheṇa api kālena mayā te guṇāḥ ca paramaḥ
ātmā vaktum na śakyāḥ nalinekṣaṇa te namaḥ
14. Even with a very long time, your qualities cannot be described by me, nor can your supreme self (ātman). Salutations to you, O lotus-eyed one!
विदितो मेऽसि दुर्धर्ष नारदाद्देवलात्तथा ।
कृष्णद्वैपायनाच्चैव तथा कुरुपितामहात् ॥१५॥
15. vidito me'si durdharṣa nāradāddevalāttathā ,
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāccaiva tathā kurupitāmahāt.
15. viditaḥ me asi durdharṣa nāradāt devalāt tathā
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāt ca eva tathā kurupitāmahāt
15. durdharṣa nāradāt devalāt tathā kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāt
ca eva tathā kurupitāmahāt me viditaḥ asi
15. O unassailable one, you are known to me from Nārada, from Devala, and also from Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), and similarly from the grandfather of the Kurus (Bhīṣma).
त्वयि सर्वं समासक्तं त्वमेवैको जनेश्वरः ।
यच्चानुग्रहसंयुक्तमेतदुक्तं त्वयानघ ॥१६॥
16. tvayi sarvaṁ samāsaktaṁ tvamevaiko janeśvaraḥ ,
yaccānugrahasaṁyuktametaduktaṁ tvayānagha.
16. tvayi sarvam samāsaktam tvam eva ekaḥ janeśvaraḥ
yat ca anugrahasaṃyuktam etat uktam tvayā anagha
16. anagha tvayi sarvam samāsaktam tvam eva ekaḥ
janeśvaraḥ ca yat anugrahasaṃyuktam etat uktam tvayā
16. All things are dependent upon you; you alone are the ruler of all beings. And this (teaching) full of grace has been spoken by you, O faultless one.
एतत्सर्वमहं सम्यगाचरिष्ये जनार्दन ।
इदं चाद्भुतमत्यर्थं कृतमस्मत्प्रियेप्सया ॥१७॥
17. etatsarvamahaṁ samyagācariṣye janārdana ,
idaṁ cādbhutamatyarthaṁ kṛtamasmatpriyepsayā.
17. etat sarvam aham samyak ācariṣye janārdana idam
ca adbhutam atyartham kṛtam asmatpriyepsayā
17. janārdana aham etat sarvam samyak ācariṣye ca
idam atyartham adbhutam asmatpriyepsayā kṛtam
17. O Janardana, I shall duly accomplish all this. And this exceedingly wonderful feat was performed out of a desire for what is dear to us.
यत्पापो निहतः संख्ये कौरव्यो धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
त्वया दग्धं हि तत्सैन्यं मया विजितमाहवे ॥१८॥
18. yatpāpo nihataḥ saṁkhye kauravyo dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
tvayā dagdhaṁ hi tatsainyaṁ mayā vijitamāhave.
18. yat pāpaḥ nihataḥ saṅkhye kauravyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
tvayā dagdham hi tat sainyam mayā vijitam āhave
18. yat pāpaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ kauravyaḥ saṅkhye nihataḥ
hi tvayā tat sainyam dagdham mayā āhave vijitam
18. That sinful Kaurava, son of Dhritarashtra, was struck down in battle. Indeed, that army was burnt by you, and it was conquered by me in battle.
भवता तत्कृतं कर्म येनावाप्तो जयो मया ।
दुर्योधनस्य संग्रामे तव बुद्धिपराक्रमैः ॥१९॥
19. bhavatā tatkṛtaṁ karma yenāvāpto jayo mayā ,
duryodhanasya saṁgrāme tava buddhiparākramaiḥ.
19. bhavatā tatkṛtam karma yena avāptaḥ jayaḥ mayā
duryodhanasya saṅgrāme tava buddhiparākramaiḥ
19. bhavatā tat karma kṛtam yena tava buddhiparākramaiḥ
mayā duryodhanasya saṅgrāme jayaḥ avāptaḥ
19. That deed (karma) was performed by you, by means of which I achieved victory in the battle against Duryodhana, through your intelligence (buddhi) and valor.
कर्णस्य च वधोपायो यथावत्संप्रदर्शितः ।
सैन्धवस्य च पापस्य भूरिश्रवस एव च ॥२०॥
20. karṇasya ca vadhopāyo yathāvatsaṁpradarśitaḥ ,
saindhavasya ca pāpasya bhūriśravasa eva ca.
20. karṇasya ca vadhopāyaḥ yathāvatsampradarśitaḥ
saindhavasya ca pāpasya bhūriśravasaḥ eva ca
20. ca karṇasya vadhopāyaḥ yathāvatsampradarśitaḥ
ca saindhavasya pāpasya ca eva bhūriśravasaḥ
20. And the method for slaying Karṇa was precisely demonstrated. Also, regarding the wicked Saindhava and indeed Bhūrīśravas (the method of their slaying).
अहं च प्रीयमाणेन त्वया देवकिनन्दन ।
यदुक्तस्तत्करिष्यामि न हि मेऽत्र विचारणा ॥२१॥
21. ahaṁ ca prīyamāṇena tvayā devakinandana ,
yaduktastatkariṣyāmi na hi me'tra vicāraṇā.
21. aham ca prīyamāṇena tvayā devakinandana yat
uktaḥ tat kariṣyāmi na hi me atra vicāraṇā
21. And I, O son of Devaki, will do what was said by you, who are pleased. Indeed, there is no hesitation in me regarding this.
राजानं च समासाद्य धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
चोदयिष्यामि धर्मज्ञ गमनार्थं तवानघ ॥२२॥
22. rājānaṁ ca samāsādya dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
codayiṣyāmi dharmajña gamanārthaṁ tavānagha.
22. rājānam ca samāsādya dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
codayiṣyāmi dharmajña gamanārtham tava anagha
22. And having approached King Yudhiṣṭhira, who is righteous (dharma) in spirit, O knower of righteousness (dharma), O sinless one, I will urge him concerning your departure.
रुचितं हि ममैतत्ते द्वारकागमनं प्रभो ।
अचिराच्चैव दृष्टा त्वं मातुलं मधुसूदन ।
बलदेवं च दुर्धर्षं तथान्यान्वृष्णिपुंगवान् ॥२३॥
23. rucitaṁ hi mamaitatte dvārakāgamanaṁ prabho ,
acirāccaiva dṛṣṭā tvaṁ mātulaṁ madhusūdana ,
baladevaṁ ca durdharṣaṁ tathānyānvṛṣṇipuṁgavān.
23. rucitam hi mama etat te dvārakāgamanam
prabho acirāt ca eva dṛṣṭvā tvam
mātulam madhusūdana baladevam ca
durdharṣam tathā anyān vṛṣṇipuṅgavān
23. Indeed, this journey of yours to Dvārakā is pleasing to me, O Lord. And very soon, having seen your maternal uncle Madhusūdana, the unconquerable Baladeva, and likewise other eminent Vṛṣṇi heroes, you will be content.
एवं संभाषमाणौ तौ प्राप्तौ वारणसाह्वयम् ।
तथा विविशतुश्चोभौ संप्रहृष्टनराकुलम् ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇau tau prāptau vāraṇasāhvayam ,
tathā viviśatuścobhau saṁprahṛṣṭanarākulam.
24. evam saṃbhāṣamāṇau tau prāptau vāraṇasāhvayam
tathā viviśatuḥ ca ubhau samprahṛṣṭanarākulam
24. Thus, while conversing, both of them reached the city named Vāraṇā. And both of them entered that place, which was crowded with extremely joyful people.
तौ गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रस्य गृहं शक्रगृहोपमम् ।
ददृशाते महाराज धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥२५॥
25. tau gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gṛhaṁ śakragṛhopamam ,
dadṛśāte mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janeśvaram.
25. tau gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gṛham śakragṛhopamam
dadṛśāte mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭram janeśvaram
25. tau śakragṛhopamam dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gṛham gatvā
mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭram janeśvaram dadṛśāte
25. Having gone to Dhṛtarāṣṭra's house, which was comparable to Indra's abode, they saw the great king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men.
विदुरं च महाबुद्धिं राजानं च युधिष्ठिरम् ।
भीमसेनं च दुर्धर्षं माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
धृतराष्ट्रमुपासीनं युयुत्सुं चापराजितम् ॥२६॥
26. viduraṁ ca mahābuddhiṁ rājānaṁ ca yudhiṣṭhiram ,
bhīmasenaṁ ca durdharṣaṁ mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramupāsīnaṁ yuyutsuṁ cāparājitam.
26. viduram ca mahābuddhim rājānam ca
yudhiṣṭhiram bhīmasenam ca durdharṣam
mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau dhṛtarāṣṭram
upāsīnam yuyutsum ca aparājitam
26. dhṛtarāṣṭram upāsīnam mahābuddhim
viduram ca rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram ca durdharṣam
bhīmasenam ca pāṇḍavau mādrīputrau
ca aparājitam yuyutsum ca (dadṛśāte)
26. And they saw Vidura, the greatly intelligent, King Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena the formidable, the two Pāṇḍava sons of Mādrī, and Yuyutsu, the unconquered, all seated near Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
गान्धारीं च महाप्राज्ञां पृथां कृष्णां च भामिनीम् ।
सुभद्राद्याश्च ताः सर्वा भरतानां स्त्रियस्तथा ।
ददृशाते स्थिताः सर्वा गान्धारीं परिवार्य वै ॥२७॥
27. gāndhārīṁ ca mahāprājñāṁ pṛthāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ ca bhāminīm ,
subhadrādyāśca tāḥ sarvā bharatānāṁ striyastathā ,
dadṛśāte sthitāḥ sarvā gāndhārīṁ parivārya vai.
27. gāndhārīm ca mahāprājñām pṛthām kṛṣṇām
ca bhāminīm subhadrādyāḥ ca tāḥ sarvāḥ
bharatānām striyaḥ tathā dadṛśāte
sthitāḥ sarvāḥ gāndhārīm parivārya vai
27. mahāprājñām gāndhārīm ca pṛthām ca
bhāminīm kṛṣṇām ca tathā subhadrādyāḥ tāḥ
sarvāḥ bharatānām striyaḥ ca sarvāḥ
gāndhārīm parivārya sthitāḥ dadṛśāte vai
27. And they saw Gāndhārī, the greatly wise, Pṛthā (Kuntī), and Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) the spirited one, and all those women including Subhadrā, and also the wives of the Bhāratas, all standing, surrounding Gāndhārī.
ततः समेत्य राजानं धृतराष्ट्रमरिंदमौ ।
निवेद्य नामधेये स्वे तस्य पादावगृह्णताम् ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ sametya rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭramariṁdamau ,
nivedya nāmadheye sve tasya pādāvagṛhṇatām.
28. tataḥ sametya rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram arindamau
nivedya nāmadheye sve tasya pādau agṛhṇatām
28. tataḥ arindamau rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram sametya
sve nāmadheye nivedya tasya pādau agṛhṇatām
28. Then, having approached King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, those two destroyers of foes, after announcing their own names, touched his feet.
गान्धार्याश्च पृथायाश्च धर्मराज्ञस्तथैव च ।
भीमस्य च महात्मानौ तथा पादावगृह्णताम् ॥२९॥
29. gāndhāryāśca pṛthāyāśca dharmarājñastathaiva ca ,
bhīmasya ca mahātmānau tathā pādāvagṛhṇatām.

29. And the two great souls (mahātmanau) likewise clasped the feet of Gandhari, Pritha, the king of righteousness (dharma), and Bhima.
क्षत्तारं चापि संपूज्य पृष्ट्वा कुशलमव्ययम् ।
तैः सार्धं नृपतिं वृद्धं ततस्तं पर्युपासताम् ॥३०॥
30. kṣattāraṁ cāpi saṁpūjya pṛṣṭvā kuśalamavyayam ,
taiḥ sārdhaṁ nṛpatiṁ vṛddhaṁ tatastaṁ paryupāsatām.
30. kṣattāram ca api sampūjya pṛṣṭvā kuśalam avyayam
taiḥ sārdham nṛpatim vṛddham tataḥ tam paryupāsatām
30. kṣattāram ca api sampūjya avyayam kuśalam pṛṣṭvā

30. Having also honored the charioteer (Kṣattā) and inquired about his unfailing well-being, they then, along with those others, attended upon that aged king.
ततो निशि महाराज धृतराष्ट्रः कुरूद्वहान् ।
जनार्दनं च मेधावी व्यसर्जयत वै गृहान् ॥३१॥
31. tato niśi mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ kurūdvahān ,
janārdanaṁ ca medhāvī vyasarjayata vai gṛhān.

31. Thereafter, O great king, the intelligent Dhritarashtra, during the night, sent away the leaders of the Kurus and Janardana (Kṛṣṇa) to their respective homes.
तेऽनुज्ञाता नृपतिना ययुः स्वं स्वं निवेशनम् ।
धनंजयगृहानेव ययौ कृष्णस्तु वीर्यवान् ॥३२॥
32. te'nujñātā nṛpatinā yayuḥ svaṁ svaṁ niveśanam ,
dhanaṁjayagṛhāneva yayau kṛṣṇastu vīryavān.
32. te anujñātāḥ nṛpatinā yayuḥ svam svam niveśanam
dhananjayagṛhān eva yayau kṛṣṇaḥ tu vīryavān
32. nṛpatinā anujñātāḥ te svam svam niveśanam yayuḥ

32. Having been permitted by the king, they went to their respective dwellings. But the valiant Kṛṣṇa went directly to Dhananjaya's (Arjuna's) house.
तत्रार्चितो यथान्यायं सर्वकामैरुपस्थितः ।
कृष्णः सुष्वाप मेधावी धनंजयसहायवान् ॥३३॥
33. tatrārcito yathānyāyaṁ sarvakāmairupasthitaḥ ,
kṛṣṇaḥ suṣvāpa medhāvī dhanaṁjayasahāyavān.
33. tatra arcitaḥ yathānyāyam sarvakāmaiḥ upasthitaḥ
kṛṣṇaḥ suṣvāpa medhāvī dhanañjayasahāyavān

33. Having been duly honored and provided with all necessities there, the intelligent Krishna, accompanied by Dhananjaya (Arjuna), slept.
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियौ ।
धर्मराजस्य भवनं जग्मतुः परमार्चितौ ।
यत्रास्ते स सहामात्यो धर्मराजो महामनाः ॥३४॥
34. prabhātāyāṁ tu śarvaryāṁ kṛtapūrvāhṇikakriyau ,
dharmarājasya bhavanaṁ jagmatuḥ paramārcitau ,
yatrāste sa sahāmātyo dharmarājo mahāmanāḥ.

34. When the night had dawned, and having performed their morning rituals, the two (Krishna and Arjuna), highly honored, went to the palace of Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, where that high-minded king, accompanied by his ministers, resides.
ततस्तौ तत्प्रविश्याथ ददृशाते महाबलौ ।
धर्मराजानमासीनं देवराजमिवाश्विनौ ॥३५॥
35. tatastau tatpraviśyātha dadṛśāte mahābalau ,
dharmarājānamāsīnaṁ devarājamivāśvinau.
35. tataḥ tau tat praviśya atha dadṛśāte mahābalau
dharmarājam āsīnam devarājam iva aśvinau

35. Then, having entered that (palace), those two mighty ones saw Dharmaraja seated, just as the two Ashvins (divine twins) would see the king of gods (Indra).
तौ समासाद्य राजानं वार्ष्णेयकुरुपुंगवौ ।
निषीदतुरनुज्ञातौ प्रीयमाणेन तेन वै ॥३६॥
36. tau samāsādya rājānaṁ vārṣṇeyakurupuṁgavau ,
niṣīdaturanujñātau prīyamāṇena tena vai.
36. tau samāsādya rājānam vārṣṇeyakurupuṅgavau
niṣīdatur anujñātau prīyamāṇena tena vai

36. Those two, the best among the Vrishnis and Kurus, having approached the king, sat down, indeed permitted by him who was pleased.
ततः स राजा मेधावी विवक्षू प्रेक्ष्य तावुभौ ।
प्रोवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठो वचनं राजसत्तमः ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ sa rājā medhāvī vivakṣū prekṣya tāvubhau ,
provāca vadatāṁ śreṣṭho vacanaṁ rājasattamaḥ.
37. tataḥ saḥ rājā medhāvī vivakṣū prekṣya tau ubhau
provāca vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ vacanam rājasattamaḥ
37. Then, that wise king, the best among speakers and the best of rulers, seeing those two desirous of speaking, uttered these words.
विवक्षू हि युवां मन्ये वीरौ यदुकुरूद्वहौ ।
ब्रूत कर्तास्मि सर्वं वां न चिरान्मा विचार्यताम् ॥३८॥
38. vivakṣū hi yuvāṁ manye vīrau yadukurūdvahau ,
brūta kartāsmi sarvaṁ vāṁ na cirānmā vicāryatām.
38. vivakṣū hi yuvām manye vīrau yadukūrūdvahau brūta
kartā asmi sarvam vām na cirāt mā vicāryatām
38. Indeed, I perceive that you two, valiant heroes who uphold both the Yadus and the Kurus, wish to speak. Speak! I will accomplish everything for you without delay; do not hesitate or deliberate.
इत्युक्ते फल्गुनस्तत्र धर्मराजानमब्रवीत् ।
विनीतवदुपागम्य वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥३९॥
39. ityukte phalgunastatra dharmarājānamabravīt ,
vinītavadupāgamya vākyaṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ.
39. iti ukte phalgunaḥ tatra dharmarājānam abravīt
vinītavat upāgamya vākyam vākyaviśāradaḥ
39. When this was said, Arjuna (Phalguna), an expert in speech, then respectfully approached the king (dharma rāja Yudhiṣṭhira) and spoke these words.
अयं चिरोषितो राजन्वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ।
भवन्तं समनुज्ञाप्य पितरं द्रष्टुमिच्छति ॥४०॥
40. ayaṁ ciroṣito rājanvāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ,
bhavantaṁ samanujñāpya pitaraṁ draṣṭumicchati.
40. ayam ciroṣitaḥ rājan vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān
bhavantam samanujñāpya pitaram draṣṭum icchati
40. O King, this glorious (pratāpavān) Vāsudeva, who has resided here for a long time, desires to see his father after obtaining your permission.
स गच्छेदभ्यनुज्ञातो भवता यदि मन्यसे ।
आनर्तनगरीं वीरस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥४१॥
41. sa gacchedabhyanujñāto bhavatā yadi manyase ,
ānartanagarīṁ vīrastadanujñātumarhasi.
41. saḥ gacchet abhyanujñātaḥ bhavatā yadi manyase
| ānartanagarīm vīraḥ tat anujñātum arhasi
41. vīraḥ,
yadi bhavatā abhyanujñātaḥ manyase,
saḥ gacchet.

41. If you (Kṛṣṇa) deem it appropriate and consider yourself permitted, then you may depart. O hero, you should indeed allow yourself to go to the city of Ānarta (Dvārakā).
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पुण्डरीकाक्ष भद्रं ते गच्छ त्वं मधुसूदन ।
पुरीं द्वारवतीमद्य द्रष्टुं शूरसुतं प्रभुम् ॥४२॥
42. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
puṇḍarīkākṣa bhadraṁ te gaccha tvaṁ madhusūdana ,
purīṁ dvāravatīmadya draṣṭuṁ śūrasutaṁ prabhum.
42. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca | puṇḍarīkākṣa bhadram te gaccha tvam
madhusūdana | purīm dvāravatīm adya draṣṭum śūrasutam prabhum
42. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca: puṇḍarīkākṣa madhusūdana,
te bhadram! tvam adya dvāravatīm purīm gaccha,
prabhum śūrasutam draṣṭum.
42. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O lotus-eyed (Kṛṣṇa), O Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), may well-being be with you! You should go today to the city of Dvāravatī, to see the lord, the son of Śūra (Vasudeva).
रोचते मे महाबाहो गमनं तव केशव ।
मातुलश्चिरदृष्टो मे त्वया देवी च देवकी ॥४३॥
43. rocate me mahābāho gamanaṁ tava keśava ,
mātulaściradṛṣṭo me tvayā devī ca devakī.

mātulaḥ cira-dṛṣṭaḥ me tvayā devī ca devakī
43. mahābāho keśava,
tava gamanam me rocate.
me mātulaḥ cira-dṛṣṭaḥ,

43. O mighty-armed (Kṛṣṇa), O Keśava, your departure is agreeable to me. My uncle (Vasudeva) has not been seen by me for a long time, and neither has the divine Devakī (owing to your long stay here with us).
मातुलं वसुदेवं त्वं बलदेवं च माधव ।
पूजयेथा महाप्राज्ञ मद्वाक्येन यथार्हतः ॥४४॥
44. mātulaṁ vasudevaṁ tvaṁ baladevaṁ ca mādhava ,
pūjayethā mahāprājña madvākyena yathārhataḥ.
44. mātulam vasudevam tvam baladevam ca mādhava |
pūjayethāḥ mahāprājña mat-vākyena yathā-arhataḥ
44. mādhava mahāprājña,
tvam mātulam vasudevam ca baladevam ca mat-vākyena yathā-arhataḥ pūjayethāḥ.
44. O Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), O greatly wise one, you should honor uncle Vasudeva and Baladeva on my behalf, as is appropriate.
स्मरेथाश्चापि मां नित्यं भीमं च बलिनां वरम् ।
फल्गुनं नकुलं चैव सहदेवं च माधव ॥४५॥
45. smarethāścāpi māṁ nityaṁ bhīmaṁ ca balināṁ varam ,
phalgunaṁ nakulaṁ caiva sahadevaṁ ca mādhava.
45. smarethāḥ ca api mām nityam bhīmam ca balinām
varam phalgunaṃ nakulaṃ ca eva sahadevam ca mādhava
45. mādhava mām nityam bhīmam ca balinām varam
phalgunaṃ nakulaṃ ca eva sahadevam ca api smarethāḥ
45. O Madhava, you should always remember me, and Bhima, the best among the strong, as well as Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva.
आनर्तानवलोक्य त्वं पितरं च महाभुज ।
वृष्णींश्च पुनरागच्छेर्हयमेधे ममानघ ॥४६॥
46. ānartānavalokya tvaṁ pitaraṁ ca mahābhuja ,
vṛṣṇīṁśca punarāgaccherhayamedhe mamānagha.
46. ānartān avalokya tvam pitaraṃ ca mahābhuja
vṛṣṇīn ca punaḥ āgaccheḥ hayamedhe mama anagha
46. anagha mahābhuja tvam ānartān pitaraṃ ca vṛṣṇīn
ca avalokya punaḥ mama hayamedhe āgaccheḥ
46. O great-armed one, O sinless one, after seeing the Anartas, your father, and the Vrishnis, you should return again for my horse ritual (hayamedha).
स गच्छ रत्नान्यादाय विविधानि वसूनि च ।
यच्चाप्यन्यन्मनोज्ञं ते तदप्यादत्स्व सात्वत ॥४७॥
47. sa gaccha ratnānyādāya vividhāni vasūni ca ,
yaccāpyanyanmanojñaṁ te tadapyādatsva sātvata.
47. saḥ gaccha ratnāni ādāya vividhāni vasūni ca yat
ca api anyat manojñaṃ te tat api ādatsva sātvata
47. sātvata saḥ gaccha vividhāni ratnāni vasūni ca
ādāya yat ca api anyat manojñaṃ te tat api ādatsva
47. O Sātvata, go and take various jewels and riches. And whatever else is agreeable to you, that also take for yourself.
इयं हि वसुधा सर्वा प्रसादात्तव माधव ।
अस्मानुपगता वीर निहताश्चापि शत्रवः ॥४८॥
48. iyaṁ hi vasudhā sarvā prasādāttava mādhava ,
asmānupagatā vīra nihatāścāpi śatravaḥ.
48. iyam hi vasudhā sarvā prasādāt tava mādhava
asmān upagatā vīra nihatāḥ ca api śatravaḥ
48. mādhava vīra hi iyaṃ sarvā vasudhā tava
prasādāt asmān upagatā ca śatravaḥ api nihatāḥ
48. O Madhava, O hero, indeed this entire earth has come to us by your grace, and our enemies have also been slain.
एवं ब्रुवति कौरव्ये धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे ।
वासुदेवो वरः पुंसामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४९॥
49. evaṁ bruvati kauravye dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire ,
vāsudevo varaḥ puṁsāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

49. While the Kuru prince, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), was speaking thus, Vāsudeva, the best among men, uttered these words.
तवैव रत्नानि धनं च केवलम्धरा च कृत्स्ना तु महाभुजाद्य वै ।
यदस्ति चान्यद्द्रविणं गृहेषु मे त्वमेव तस्येश्वर नित्यमीश्वरः ॥५०॥
50. tavaiva ratnāni dhanaṁ ca kevala;mdharā ca kṛtsnā tu mahābhujādya vai ,
yadasti cānyaddraviṇaṁ gṛheṣu me; tvameva tasyeśvara nityamīśvaraḥ.
50. tava eva ratnāni dhanam ca kevalam
dharā ca kṛtsnā tu mahābhuja adya vai
yat asti ca anyat draviṇam gṛheṣu me
tvam eva tasya īśvara nityam īśvaraḥ
50. mahābhuja tava eva ratnāni dhanam
ca kevalam kṛtsnā dharā ca adya vai
me gṛheṣu yat ca anyat draviṇam
asti tvam eva tasya nityam īśvaraḥ
50. O mighty-armed one, your own jewels, wealth, and indeed the entire earth are exclusively yours today. Furthermore, whatever other property is in my homes, you alone are eternally its master.
तथेत्यथोक्तः प्रतिपूजितस्तदा गदाग्रजो धर्मसुतेन वीर्यवान् ।
पितृष्वसामभ्यवदद्यथाविधि संपूजितश्चाप्यगमत्प्रदक्षिणम् ॥५१॥
51. tathetyathoktaḥ pratipūjitastadā; gadāgrajo dharmasutena vīryavān ,
pitṛṣvasāmabhyavadadyathāvidhi; saṁpūjitaścāpyagamatpradakṣiṇam.
51. tathā iti atha uktaḥ pratipūjitaḥ
tadā gadāgrajaḥ dharmasutena vīryavān

51. Then, having been told "So be it" and duly honored by Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of natural law (dharma), the powerful Kṛṣṇa (gadāgraja) addressed his paternal aunt appropriately. Well-honored, he then departed, circumambulating her.
तया स सम्यक्प्रतिनन्दितस्तदा तथैव सर्वैर्विदुरादिभिस्ततः ।
विनिर्ययौ नागपुराद्गदाग्रजो रथेन दिव्येन चतुर्युजा हरिः ॥५२॥
52. tayā sa samyakpratinanditastadā; tathaiva sarvairvidurādibhistataḥ ,
viniryayau nāgapurādgadāgrajo; rathena divyena caturyujā hariḥ.

52. Then, having been properly welcomed by her (his aunt), and similarly by all others led by Vidura, he, Hari (Kṛṣṇa), the elder brother of Gadā, departed from Nāgapura in his divine chariot drawn by four steeds.
रथं सुभद्रामधिरोप्य भामिनीं युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते जनार्दनः ।
पितृष्वसायाश्च तथा महाभुजो विनिर्ययौ पौरजनाभिसंवृतः ॥५३॥
53. rathaṁ subhadrāmadhiropya bhāminīṁ; yudhiṣṭhirasyānumate janārdanaḥ ,
pitṛṣvasāyāśca tathā mahābhujo; viniryayau paurajanābhisaṁvṛtaḥ.

53. The mighty-armed Janardana, having seated the beautiful Subhadra in the chariot, with the permission of Yudhishthira and also of his paternal aunt, set out surrounded by the citizens.
तमन्वगाद्वानरवर्यकेतनः ससात्यकिर्माद्रवतीसुतावपि ।
अगाधबुद्धिर्विदुरश्च माधवं स्वयं च भीमो गजराजविक्रमः ॥५४॥
54. tamanvagādvānaravaryaketanaḥ; sasātyakirmādravatīsutāvapi ,
agādhabuddhirviduraśca mādhavaṁ; svayaṁ ca bhīmo gajarājavikramaḥ.

54. Arjuna, whose banner bore the best of monkeys, followed him (Madhava), as did Satyaki, the two sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva), the deep-minded Vidura, and Bhima himself, valorous as a lordly elephant.
निवर्तयित्वा कुरुराष्ट्रवर्धनांस्ततः स सर्वान्विदुरं च वीर्यवान् ।
जनार्दनो दारुकमाह सत्वरः प्रचोदयाश्वानिति सात्यकिस्तदा ॥५५॥
55. nivartayitvā kururāṣṭravardhanāṁ;stataḥ sa sarvānviduraṁ ca vīryavān ,
janārdano dārukamāha satvaraḥ; pracodayāśvāniti sātyakistadā.

55. Having dismissed all the enhancers of the Kuru kingdom and also Vidura, the powerful Janardana then swiftly commanded Daruka, "Drive the horses!" Satyaki too was there at that time.
ततो ययौ शत्रुगणप्रमर्दनः शिनिप्रवीरानुगतो जनार्दनः ।
यथा निहत्यारिगणाञ्शतक्रतुर्दिवं तथानर्तपुरीं प्रतापवान् ॥५६॥
56. tato yayau śatrugaṇapramardanaḥ; śinipravīrānugato janārdanaḥ ,
yathā nihatyārigaṇāñśatakratu;rdivaṁ tathānartapurīṁ pratāpavān.

56. Then the glorious Janardana, the destroyer of hosts of enemies, followed by the hero of the Shinis (Satyaki), departed for the city of Anarta, just as Shatakratu (Indra), having slain his hosts of enemies, goes to heaven.
