Sañjaya said: But Śalya, seeing the armies crushed by arrows in the fierce clash between Karṇa and Arjuna, and noticing Duryodhana departing, pointed out the battlefield, O Bhārata.

Upon seeing that army - whose chariots, horses, and elephants had been struck down, and whose leader, Karṇa, was slain - Duryodhana, with eyes full of tears, sighed repeatedly, appearing deeply distressed.

But, the heroic Karṇa, fallen on the earth, whose body was smeared with blood and covered with arrows, lay there like the sun fallen upon the ground by chance. Desirous of seeing him, they stood surrounding him.

Some were greatly delighted, others terrified, others dejected, and still others astonished. Likewise, some became as if overcome with grief. Your people and others [the Pāṇḍavas' allies], each reacted among themselves according to their intrinsic nature (prakṛti).

Having witnessed Karṇa, whose armor, ornaments, garments, and weapons were scattered, who was struck down by Dhanañjaya, and whose vitality was destroyed, the Kurus fled, utterly bewildered, like cows whose chief bull has been slain.

Having engaged in a fierce battle with Arjuna, and seeing Karṇa slain and lying on the ground like an elephant by a lion, the king of Madras, terrified, fled very swiftly with his chariot.

The King of Madras (Śalya), whose mind was bewildered, quickly approached Duryodhana with his chariot from which the banner had been torn down. Having arrived near him and conversed swiftly, he spoke these words, which were afflicted with sorrow.

Your army, whose elephants, horses, chariots, and chief warriors are shattered, resembles the realm of Yama (the lord of death). Its mighty men, horses, and elephants, comparable to mountain peaks, have been destroyed by encountering one another.

O Bhārata (Duryodhana), such a battle as that which took place today between Karṇa and Arjuna has never occurred. Indeed, the two Kṛṣṇas (Arjuna and Vāsudeva), along with all your other enemies, have been overwhelmed by Karṇa after confronting him.

Indeed, destiny (daivam), which is self-willed and has come into play, protects the Pāṇḍavas and destroys us. Truly, all the heroes who were meant to achieve your objectives have been forcibly slain by the enemies.

These heroes, equal in splendor to Kubera, Yama (Vaivasvata), Indra (Vasava), and Varuna (Ambupati), were endowed with valor, heroism, strength, and various other vast multitudes of excellent qualities.

Your kings, who were almost invulnerable and fought for your cause, have been slain in battle by the Pandavas. Therefore, O descendant of Bharata, do not grieve; this is destiny. Success is not always constant; it alternates.

After hearing these words from the king of Madra (Salya), and mentally reflecting on his own misdeeds, Duryodhana became dejected and senseless, sighing repeatedly like one in distress.

Sanjaya (Artayani) then addressed Duryodhana, who was silent in deep thought (dhyāna), miserable, greatly distressed, and dejected, with these words: "Behold this terrible battlefield, now filled with men, horses, and elephants slain by valiant heroes."

The great elephants, resembling mountains, had fallen, repeatedly pierced and with their vital parts struck by arrows. Among them were those that were still trembling and those that were already lifeless, their war machines, weapons, armor, and warriors utterly destroyed.

(They lay there) like great mountains struck down by a thunderbolt, their rocks, deer, trees, and herbs shattered. Their bells, goads, javelins, and banners were scattered, and they were adorned with golden garlands, completely drenched in torrents of blood.

The earth was covered with elephants whose other trunks and bodies had been severed, who were trembling and had fallen to the ground. It was also covered with glorious enemies, who fought from elephants, chariots, and horses, and with foot soldiers, all of whom had been slain while facing the front, their armor, ornaments, garments, and weapons shattered. The earth appeared as if covered by extinguished fires.

Then the sky split, and the earth (urvī) roared. The winds blew fiercely and excessively. The smoky directions blazed intensely, and the great oceans (mahārṇava) churned with mighty roars.

O respected one (māriṣa), (the lands) with forests (kānana) and mountain ranges trembled, and the multitudes of beings (bhūtaganāḥ) were distressed. Jupiter (Bṛhaspati), having severely afflicted (the constellation) Rohiṇī, became the color of the moon and the sun combined.

When Karṇa was slain, the directions (diś) became unclear, the sky, covered in darkness, trembled, and the earth (bhūmi) shook. A meteor (ulkā) bright like a flame fell, and the night-wanderers (niśācara) also became exceedingly joyful.

When Arjuna struck down Karna's head, which had a radiant face like the moon, with an arrow, then repeatedly, both in the atmosphere, in heaven, and on earth, there arose a mournful cry of "alas! alas!" from the people.

Then, having forcefully rendered the enemies powerless by the sounds of their bowstrings, palm-guards, and chariot wheels, and having completely subdued the Kurus with torrents of arrows, Arjuna (whose banner bears a monkey) and Krishna (whose banner bears the best of birds) mightily blew their two resounding conch shells, disheartening the minds of their adversaries.
