युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो कच्चित्तात कुशल्यसि ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः पौरजानपदैस्तथा ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho kaccittāta kuśalyasi ,
sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ paurajānapadaistathā.

1. Dhritarashtra said: 'O Yudhishthira, O mighty-armed one, are you well, my dear son, along with all your brothers, and also with the citizens and country-folk?'
ये च त्वामुपजीवन्ति कच्चित्तेऽपि निरामयाः ।
सचिवा भृत्यवर्गाश्च गुरवश्चैव ते विभो ॥२॥
2. ye ca tvāmupajīvanti kaccitte'pi nirāmayāḥ ,
sacivā bhṛtyavargāśca guravaścaiva te vibho.
2. ye ca tvām upajīvanti kaccit te api nirāmayāḥ
sacivāḥ bhṛtyavargāḥ ca guravaḥ ca eva te vibho

2. And, O powerful one, I hope that those who depend on you - your ministers, your retinue of servants, and your teachers - are also free from illness.
कच्चिद्वर्तसि पौराणीं वृत्तिं राजर्षिसेविताम् ।
कच्चिद्दायाननुच्छिद्य कोशस्तेऽभिप्रपूर्यते ॥३॥
3. kaccidvartasi paurāṇīṁ vṛttiṁ rājarṣisevitām ,
kacciddāyānanucchidya kośaste'bhiprapūryate.
3. kaccit vartasi paurāṇīm vṛttim rājarṣisevitām
kaccit dāyān anucchidya kośaḥ te abhiprapūryate

3. Are you maintaining the ancient way of life that was followed by royal sages? Is your treasury being fully replenished without interrupting the traditional revenues?
अरिमध्यस्थमित्रेषु वर्तसे चानुरूपतः ।
ब्राह्मणानग्रहारैर्वा यथावदनुपश्यसि ॥४॥
4. arimadhyasthamitreṣu vartase cānurūpataḥ ,
brāhmaṇānagrahārairvā yathāvadanupaśyasi.
4. ari-madhyastha-mitreṣu vartase ca anurūpataḥ
brāhmaṇān agrahāraiḥ vā yathāvat anupaśyasi
4. ca ari-madhyastha-mitreṣu anurūpataḥ vartase
vā yathāvat agrahāraiḥ brāhmaṇān anupaśyasi
4. Do you conduct yourself appropriately towards your enemies, neutral parties, and friends? And do you properly regard the Brahmins by providing them with land grants?
कच्चित्ते परितुष्यन्ति शीलेन भरतर्षभ ।
शत्रवो गुरवः पौरा भृत्या वा स्वजनोऽपि वा ॥५॥
5. kaccitte parituṣyanti śīlena bharatarṣabha ,
śatravo guravaḥ paurā bhṛtyā vā svajano'pi vā.
5. kaccit te parituṣyanti śīlena bharatarṣabha
śatravaḥ guravaḥ paurāḥ bhṛtyāḥ vā svajanaḥ api vā
5. bharatarṣabha kaccit te śīlena śatravaḥ guravaḥ
paurāḥ bhṛtyāḥ vā api svajanaḥ vā parituṣyanti
5. O best among the Bharatas, are your enemies, venerable teachers, citizens, servants, and even your own relatives, all satisfied by your virtuous conduct?
कच्चिद्यजसि राजेन्द्र श्रद्धावान्पितृदेवताः ।
अतिथींश्चान्नपानेन कच्चिदर्चसि भारत ॥६॥
6. kaccidyajasi rājendra śraddhāvānpitṛdevatāḥ ,
atithīṁścānnapānena kaccidarcasi bhārata.
6. kaccit yajasi rājendra śraddhāvān pitṛ-devatāḥ
atithīn ca anna-pānena kaccit arcasi bhārata
6. rājendra kaccit śraddhāvān pitṛ-devatāḥ yajasi
ca bhārata kaccit anna-pānena atithīn arcasi
6. O king of kings, do you faithfully perform Vedic rituals (yajña) for the ancestors and deities? And, O Bhārata, do you honor guests with food and drink?
कच्चिच्च विषये विप्राः स्वकर्मनिरतास्तव ।
क्षत्रिया वैश्यवर्गा वा शूद्रा वापि कुटुम्बिनः ॥७॥
7. kaccicca viṣaye viprāḥ svakarmaniratāstava ,
kṣatriyā vaiśyavargā vā śūdrā vāpi kuṭumbinaḥ.
7. kaccit ca viṣaye viprāḥ svakarma-niratāḥ tava
kṣatriyāḥ vaiśya-vargāḥ vā śūdrāḥ vā api kuṭumbinaḥ
7. kaccit tava viṣaye viprāḥ kṣatriyāḥ vaiśya-vargāḥ
vā śūdrāḥ api kuṭumbinaḥ ca svakarma-niratāḥ
7. I hope that in your kingdom, the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishya classes, and even the Shudras, who are householders, are all devoted to their respective natural duties (dharma).
कच्चित्स्त्रीबालवृद्धं ते न शोचति न याचते ।
जामयः पूजिताः कच्चित्तव गेहे नरर्षभ ॥८॥
8. kaccitstrībālavṛddhaṁ te na śocati na yācate ,
jāmayaḥ pūjitāḥ kaccittava gehe nararṣabha.
8. kaccit strī-bāla-vṛddham te na śocati na yācate
jāmayaḥ pūjitāḥ kaccit tava gehe nararṣabha
8. nararṣabha kaccit te strī-bāla-vṛddham na śocati
na yācate kaccit tava gehe jāmayaḥ pūjitāḥ
8. O best of men, I hope that your women, children, and elders do not experience grief or have to beg, and that your female relatives are honored in your home.
कच्चिद्राजर्षिवंशोऽयं त्वामासाद्य महीपतिम् ।
यथोचितं महाराज यशसा नावसीदति ॥९॥
9. kaccidrājarṣivaṁśo'yaṁ tvāmāsādya mahīpatim ,
yathocitaṁ mahārāja yaśasā nāvasīdati.
9. kaccit rājarṣi-vaṃśaḥ ayam tvām āsādya mahīpatim
yathocitam mahārāja yaśasā na avasīdati
9. mahārāja kaccit ayam rājarṣi-vaṃśaḥ tvām
mahīpatim āsādya yathocitam yaśasā na avasīdati
9. O great king, I hope that this lineage of royal sages, having obtained you as its sovereign, does not diminish in glory, as is appropriate.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्येवंवादिनं तं स न्यायवित्प्रत्यभाषत ।
कुशलप्रश्नसंयुक्तं कुशलो वाक्यकर्मणि ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityevaṁvādinaṁ taṁ sa nyāyavitpratyabhāṣata ,
kuśalapraśnasaṁyuktaṁ kuśalo vākyakarmaṇi.
10. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti evam-vādinaṃ tam saḥ nyāya-vit
pratyabhāṣata kuśala-praśna-saṃyuktam kuśalaḥ vākya-karmaṇi
10. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca saḥ nyāya-vit vākya-karmaṇi kuśalaḥ
tam evam-vādinaṃ kuśala-praśna-saṃyuktam iti pratyabhāṣata
10. Vaiśampāyana said: To that speaker, whose words were combined with questions about welfare, the king, who was knowledgeable in justice and adept in verbal expression, responded.
कच्चित्ते वर्धते राजंस्तपो मन्दश्रमस्य ते ।
अपि मे जननी चेयं शुश्रूषुर्विगतक्लमा ।
अप्यस्याः सफलो राजन्वनवासो भविष्यति ॥११॥
11. kaccitte vardhate rājaṁstapo mandaśramasya te ,
api me jananī ceyaṁ śuśrūṣurvigataklamā ,
apyasyāḥ saphalo rājanvanavāso bhaviṣyati.
11. kaccit te vardhate rājan tapaḥ
mandaśramasya te api me jananī ca iyam
śuśrūṣuḥ vigataklamā api asyāḥ
saphalaḥ rājan vanavāsaḥ bhaviṣyati
11. rājan te mandaśramasya tapaḥ kaccit
vardhate api iyam me jananī ca
śuśrūṣuḥ vigataklamā rājan api
asyāḥ vanavāsaḥ saphalaḥ bhaviṣyati
11. O king, does your asceticism (tapas), which involves little effort, flourish? And is this mother of mine, who serves you, free from fatigue? O king, will her forest dwelling (vanavāsa) be fruitful?
इयं च माता ज्येष्ठा मे शीतवाताध्वकर्शिता ।
घोरेण तपसा युक्ता देवी कच्चिन्न शोचति ॥१२॥
12. iyaṁ ca mātā jyeṣṭhā me śītavātādhvakarśitā ,
ghoreṇa tapasā yuktā devī kaccinna śocati.
12. iyam ca mātā jyeṣṭhā me śītavātādhvakarśitā
ghoreṇa tapasā yuktā devī kaccit na śocati
12. me iyam jyeṣṭhā mātā ca śītavātādhvakarśitā
ghoreṇa tapasā yuktā devī kaccit na śocati
12. And this elder mother (devī) of mine, weakened by cold, wind, and travel, and engaged in severe asceticism (tapas), does she not grieve, I hope?
हतान्पुत्रान्महावीर्यान्क्षत्रधर्मपरायणान् ।
नापध्यायति वा कच्चिदस्मान्पापकृतः सदा ॥१३॥
13. hatānputrānmahāvīryānkṣatradharmaparāyaṇān ,
nāpadhyāyati vā kaccidasmānpāpakṛtaḥ sadā.
13. hatān putrān mahāvīryān kṣatradharmaparāyaṇān
na apadhyāyati vā kaccit asmān pāpakṛtaḥ sadā
13. kaccit mahāvīryān kṣatradharmaparāyaṇān hatān
putrān na apadhyāyati vā sadā pāpakṛtaḥ asmān
13. I hope she does not sorrowfully dwell on her slain, exceedingly mighty sons who were devoted to the warrior's natural law (kṣatriya-dharma), nor always on us, the perpetrators of evil.
क्व चासौ विदुरो राजन्नैनं पश्यामहे वयम् ।
संजयः कुशली चायं कच्चिन्नु तपसि स्थितः ॥१४॥
14. kva cāsau viduro rājannainaṁ paśyāmahe vayam ,
saṁjayaḥ kuśalī cāyaṁ kaccinnu tapasi sthitaḥ.
14. kva ca asau viduraḥ rājan na enam paśyāmahe vayam
saṃjayaḥ kuśalī ca ayam kaccit nu tapasi sthitaḥ
14. rājan kva ca asau viduraḥ vayam enam na paśyāmahe
ayam saṃjayaḥ ca kuśalī kaccit nu tapasi sthitaḥ
14. And where is that Vidura, O king? We do not see him. This Saṃjaya is well, but I hope Vidura is settled in asceticism (tapas)?
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं धृतराष्ट्रो जनाधिपम् ।
कुशली विदुरः पुत्र तपो घोरं समास्थितः ॥१५॥
15. ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro janādhipam ,
kuśalī viduraḥ putra tapo ghoraṁ samāsthitaḥ.
15. iti uktaḥ prati uvāca idam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janādhipam
kuśalī viduraḥ putra tapaḥ ghoram samāsthitaḥ
15. putra,
viduraḥ kuśalī,
ghoram tapaḥ samāsthitaḥ.
iti uktaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janādhipam idam prati uvāca.
15. Having been thus addressed, Dhritarashtra replied to the lord of men: 'O son, Vidura is well and has undertaken severe asceticism (tapas).'
वायुभक्षो निराहारः कृशो धमनिसंततः ।
कदाचिद्दृश्यते विप्रैः शून्येऽस्मिन्कानने क्वचित् ॥१६॥
16. vāyubhakṣo nirāhāraḥ kṛśo dhamanisaṁtataḥ ,
kadāciddṛśyate vipraiḥ śūnye'sminkānane kvacit.
16. vāyu bhakṣaḥ nirāhāraḥ kṛśaḥ dhamanī saṃtataḥ
kadācit dṛśyate vipraiḥ śūnye asmin kānane kvacit
16. vāyu bhakṣaḥ,
nirāhāraḥ,
kṛśaḥ,
dhamanī saṃtataḥ (saḥ) kadācit vipraiḥ asmin śūnye kānane kvacit dṛśyate.
16. Living on air, abstaining from food, emaciated and covered with veins, he is sometimes seen by Brahmins somewhere in this deserted forest.
इत्येवं वदतस्तस्य जटी वीटामुखः कृशः ।
दिग्वासा मलदिग्धाङ्गो वनरेणुसमुक्षितः ॥१७॥
17. ityevaṁ vadatastasya jaṭī vīṭāmukhaḥ kṛśaḥ ,
digvāsā maladigdhāṅgo vanareṇusamukṣitaḥ.
17. iti evam vadataḥ tasya jaṭī vīṭā mukhaḥ kṛśaḥ
dik vāsas mala digdha aṅgaḥ vana reṇu samukṣitaḥ
17. tasya evam vadataḥ (tatra āgataḥ) jaṭī,
vīṭā mukhaḥ,
kṛśaḥ,
dik vāsas,
mala digdha aṅgaḥ,
vana reṇu samukṣitaḥ.
17. While he was speaking thus, (appeared) one with matted hair, his mouth covered by a cloth, emaciated, naked, with limbs smeared with dirt, and covered in forest dust.
दूरादालक्षितः क्षत्ता तत्राख्यातो महीपतेः ।
निवर्तमानः सहसा जनं दृष्ट्वाश्रमं प्रति ॥१८॥
18. dūrādālakṣitaḥ kṣattā tatrākhyāto mahīpateḥ ,
nivartamānaḥ sahasā janaṁ dṛṣṭvāśramaṁ prati.
18. dūrāt ālakṣitaḥ kṣattā tatra ākhyātaḥ mahīpateḥ
nivartamānaḥ sahasā janam dṛṣṭvā āśramam prati
18. dūrāt ālakṣitaḥ kṣattā tatra mahīpateḥ ākhyātaḥ.
sahasā āśramam prati janam dṛṣṭvā nivartamānaḥ (abhavat).
18. The chamberlain (Kṣattā), seen from afar, was announced there to the king. Suddenly, upon seeing people approaching the hermitage (āśrama), he turned back.
तमन्वधावन्नृपतिरेक एव युधिष्ठिरः ।
प्रविशन्तं वनं घोरं लक्ष्यालक्ष्यं क्वचित्क्वचित् ॥१९॥
19. tamanvadhāvannṛpatireka eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
praviśantaṁ vanaṁ ghoraṁ lakṣyālakṣyaṁ kvacitkvacit.
19. tam anvadhāvat nṛpatiḥ ekaḥ eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
praviśantam vanam ghoram lakṣyālakṣyam kvacit kvacit
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ nṛpatiḥ ekaḥ eva tam ghoram vanam
praviśantam kvacit kvacit lakṣyālakṣyam anvadhāvat
19. Yudhishthira, the king, followed him alone as he entered the dense forest, becoming visible and invisible in places.
भो भो विदुर राजाहं दयितस्ते युधिष्ठिरः ।
इति ब्रुवन्नरपतिस्तं यत्नादभ्यधावत ॥२०॥
20. bho bho vidura rājāhaṁ dayitaste yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
iti bruvannarapatistaṁ yatnādabhyadhāvata.
20. bho bho vidura rājā aham dayitaḥ te yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
iti bruvan narapatiḥ tam yatnāt abhyadhāvat
20. bho bho vidura aham te dayitaḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
iti bruvan narapatiḥ tam yatnāt abhyadhāvat
20. "O Vidura, I am Yudhishthira, the king dear to you!" With these words, the king diligently pursued him.
ततो विविक्त एकान्ते तस्थौ बुद्धिमतां वरः ।
विदुरो वृक्षमाश्रित्य कंचित्तत्र वनान्तरे ॥२१॥
21. tato vivikta ekānte tasthau buddhimatāṁ varaḥ ,
viduro vṛkṣamāśritya kaṁcittatra vanāntare.
21. tataḥ vivikte ekānte tasthau buddhimatām varaḥ
viduraḥ vṛkṣam āśritya kañcit tatra vanāntare
21. tataḥ buddhimatām varaḥ viduraḥ tatra vanāntare
kañcit vṛkṣam āśritya vivikte ekānte tasthau
21. Then Vidura, the foremost among the wise, stood alone in a secluded place within the forest, leaning against a certain tree.
तं राजा क्षीणभूयिष्ठमाकृतीमात्रसूचितम् ।
अभिजज्ञे महाबुद्धिं महाबुद्धिर्युधिष्ठिरः ॥२२॥
22. taṁ rājā kṣīṇabhūyiṣṭhamākṛtīmātrasūcitam ,
abhijajñe mahābuddhiṁ mahābuddhiryudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
22. tam rājā kṣīṇabhūyiṣṭham ākṛtimātrasūcitam
abhijajñe mahābuddhim mahābuddhiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
22. mahābuddhiḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṣīṇabhūyiṣṭham
ākṛtimātrasūcitam mahābuddhim tam abhijajñe
22. The highly discerning King Yudhishthira recognized that immensely wise individual, who was mostly emaciated and barely identifiable by his physical form.
युधिष्ठिरोऽहमस्मीति वाक्यमुक्त्वाग्रतः स्थितः ।
विदुरस्याश्रवे राजा स च प्रत्याह संज्ञया ॥२३॥
23. yudhiṣṭhiro'hamasmīti vākyamuktvāgrataḥ sthitaḥ ,
vidurasyāśrave rājā sa ca pratyāha saṁjñayā.
23. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ aham asmi iti vākyam uktvā agrataḥ
sthitaḥ vidurasya aśrave rājā saḥ ca prati āha saṃjñayā
23. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ aham asmi iti vākyam uktvā agrataḥ sthitaḥ.
rājā vidurasya aśrave (āsīt).
saḥ ca saṃjñayā prati āha.
23. Yudhiṣṭhira, having spoken the words 'I am Yudhiṣṭhira', stood before him. The king was beyond Vidura's hearing, yet Vidura responded with a gesture.
ततः सोऽनिमिषो भूत्वा राजानं समुदैक्षत ।
संयोज्य विदुरस्तस्मिन्दृष्टिं दृष्ट्या समाहितः ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ so'nimiṣo bhūtvā rājānaṁ samudaikṣata ,
saṁyojya vidurastasmindṛṣṭiṁ dṛṣṭyā samāhitaḥ.
24. tataḥ saḥ animiṣaḥ bhūtvā rājānam sam ud aikṣata
saṃyojya viduraḥ tasmin dṛṣṭim dṛṣṭyā samāhitaḥ
24. tataḥ saḥ animiṣaḥ bhūtvā rājānam sam ud aikṣata.
viduraḥ samāhitaḥ tasmin dṛṣṭim dṛṣṭyā saṃyojya.
24. Then he (Vidura), becoming unblinking, intently gazed upon the king (Yudhiṣṭhira). Vidura, fully absorbed, fixed his vision on him (the king) with utmost concentration.
विवेश विदुरो धीमान्गात्रैर्गात्राणि चैव ह ।
प्राणान्प्राणेषु च दधदिन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियेषु च ॥२५॥
25. viveśa viduro dhīmāngātrairgātrāṇi caiva ha ,
prāṇānprāṇeṣu ca dadhadindriyāṇīndriyeṣu ca.
25. viveśa viduraḥ dhīmān gātraiḥ gātrāṇi ca eva ha
prāṇān prāṇeṣu ca dadhat indriyāṇi indriyeṣu ca
25. dhīmān viduraḥ gātraiḥ gātrāṇi ca eva ha prāṇān prāṇeṣu ca indriyāṇi indriyeṣu ca dadhat viveśa.
25. The sagacious Vidura entered, merging his own physical forms into the king's physical forms, his vital breaths (prāṇa) into his vital breaths, and his senses into his senses.
स योगबलमास्थाय विवेश नृपतेस्तनुम् ।
विदुरो धर्मराजस्य तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव ॥२६॥
26. sa yogabalamāsthāya viveśa nṛpatestanum ,
viduro dharmarājasya tejasā prajvalanniva.
26. saḥ yogabalam āsthāya viveśa nṛpateḥ tanum
viduraḥ dharmarājasya tejasā prajvalan iva
26. saḥ viduraḥ yogabalam āsthāya nṛpateḥ dharmarājasya tanum viveśa tejasā prajvalan iva.
26. Having resorted to the power of (yoga), Vidura entered the body of the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), the lord of (dharma), appearing as if ablaze with a powerful radiance (tejas).
विदुरस्य शरीरं तत्तथैव स्तब्धलोचनम् ।
वृक्षाश्रितं तदा राजा ददर्श गतचेतनम् ॥२७॥
27. vidurasya śarīraṁ tattathaiva stabdhalocanam ,
vṛkṣāśritaṁ tadā rājā dadarśa gatacetanam.
27. vidurasya śarīram tat tathā eva stabdhalocanam
vṛkṣa āśritam tadā rājā dadarśa gatacetanam
27. The king then saw Vidura's body, stiff, with fixed eyes, leaning against a tree, and devoid of consciousness.
बलवन्तं तथात्मानं मेने बहुगुणं तदा ।
धर्मराजो महातेजास्तच्च सस्मार पाण्डवः ॥२८॥
28. balavantaṁ tathātmānaṁ mene bahuguṇaṁ tadā ,
dharmarājo mahātejāstacca sasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ.
28. balavantam tathā ātmānam mene bahuguṇam tadā
dharmarājaḥ mahātejāḥ tat ca sasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ
28. The greatly effulgent King of natural law (dharma), the Pāṇḍava, then considered his own self (ātman) to be powerful and highly virtuous, and he remembered that.
पौराणमात्मनः सर्वं विद्यावान्स विशां पते ।
योगधर्मं महातेजा व्यासेन कथितं यथा ॥२९॥
29. paurāṇamātmanaḥ sarvaṁ vidyāvānsa viśāṁ pate ,
yogadharmaṁ mahātejā vyāsena kathitaṁ yathā.
29. paurāṇam ātmanaḥ sarvam vidyāvān saḥ viśām pate
yogadharmam mahātejāḥ vyāsena kathitam yathā
29. O lord of the people, that greatly effulgent and learned one remembered all that ancient teaching of his self (ātman), just as it was narrated by Vyāsa, regarding the natural law (dharma) of yoga (yoga).
धर्मराजस्तु तत्रैनं संचस्कारयिषुस्तदा ।
दग्धुकामोऽभवद्विद्वानथ वै वागभाषत ॥३०॥
30. dharmarājastu tatrainaṁ saṁcaskārayiṣustadā ,
dagdhukāmo'bhavadvidvānatha vai vāgabhāṣata.
30. dharmarājaḥ tu tatra enam saṃcaskārayiṣuḥ tadā
dagdhukāmaḥ abhavat vidvān atha vai vāk abhāṣata
30. But then the learned King of natural law (dharma), desiring to perform the funeral rites there for him, became intent on burning (the body); thereupon, a voice indeed spoke.
भो भो राजन्न दग्धव्यमेतद्विदुरसंज्ञकम् ।
कलेवरमिहैतत्ते धर्म एष सनातनः ॥३१॥
31. bho bho rājanna dagdhavyametadvidurasaṁjñakam ,
kalevaramihaitatte dharma eṣa sanātanaḥ.
31. bho bho rājan na dagdhavyam etat vidurasaṃjñakam
kalevaram iha etat te dharmaḥ eṣaḥ sanātanaḥ
31. bho bho rājan etat vidurasaṃjñakam kalevaram
iha na dagdhavyam eṣaḥ te sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ
31. O King, O King, this body of Vidura should not be cremated here. This is your eternal sacred duty (dharma).
लोकाः संतानका नाम भविष्यन्त्यस्य पार्थिव ।
यतिधर्ममवाप्तोऽसौ नैव शोच्यः परंतप ॥३२॥
32. lokāḥ saṁtānakā nāma bhaviṣyantyasya pārthiva ,
yatidharmamavāpto'sau naiva śocyaḥ paraṁtapa.
32. lokāḥ santānakā nāma bhaviṣyanti asya pārthiva |
yatidharmam avāptaḥ asau na eva śocyaḥ paraṃtapa
32. pārthiva paraṃtapa asya nāma santānakā lokāḥ
bhaviṣyanti asau yatidharmam avāptaḥ na eva śocyaḥ
32. O King, his realms, called Santānaka, will come into being. He has attained the ascetic's way of life (dharma), O subduer of foes, and should certainly not be mourned.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजः स विनिवृत्य ततः पुनः ।
राज्ञो वैचित्रवीर्यस्य तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥३३॥
33. ityukto dharmarājaḥ sa vinivṛtya tataḥ punaḥ ,
rājño vaicitravīryasya tatsarvaṁ pratyavedayat.
33. iti uktaḥ dharmarājaḥ saḥ vinivṛtya tataḥ punaḥ |
rājñaḥ vaicitravīryasya tat sarvam pratyavedayat
33. iti uktaḥ saḥ dharmarājaḥ tataḥ vinivṛtya punaḥ
vaicitravīryasya rājñaḥ tat sarvam pratyavedayat
33. Thus addressed, that King of righteousness (dharmarāja) Yudhiṣṭhira returned from that spot and again reported everything to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Vicitravīrya.
ततः स राजा द्युतिमान्स च सर्वो जनस्तदा ।
भीमसेनादयश्चैव परं विस्मयमागताः ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ sa rājā dyutimānsa ca sarvo janastadā ,
bhīmasenādayaścaiva paraṁ vismayamāgatāḥ.
34. tataḥ saḥ rājā dyutimān saḥ ca sarvaḥ janaḥ tadā
| bhīmasenādayaḥ ca eva param vismayam āgatāḥ
34. tataḥ tadā saḥ dyutimān rājā ca saḥ sarvaḥ janaḥ
ca eva bhīmasenādayaḥ param vismayam āgatāḥ
34. Then, that glorious King and all the people there at that time, including Bhīmasena and others, were struck with great astonishment.
तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रीतिमान्राजा भूत्वा धर्मजमब्रवीत् ।
आपो मूलं फलं चैव ममेदं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥३५॥
35. tacchrutvā prītimānrājā bhūtvā dharmajamabravīt ,
āpo mūlaṁ phalaṁ caiva mamedaṁ pratigṛhyatām.
35. tat śrutvā prītimān rājā bhūtvā dharmajām abravīt
āpaḥ mūlam phalam ca eva mama idam pratigṛhyatām
35. rājā prītimān bhūtvā tat śrutvā dharmajām abravīt
mama idam āpaḥ mūlam phalam ca eva pratigṛhyatām
35. Having heard that, the king, becoming delighted, said to Yudhishthira, the son of (dharma): "Please accept these water, roots, and fruits from me."
यदन्नो हि नरो राजंस्तदन्नोऽस्यातिथिः स्मृतः ।
इत्युक्तः स तथेत्येव प्राह धर्मात्मजो नृपम् ।
फलं मूलं च बुभुजे राज्ञा दत्तं सहानुजः ॥३६॥
36. yadanno hi naro rājaṁstadanno'syātithiḥ smṛtaḥ ,
ityuktaḥ sa tathetyeva prāha dharmātmajo nṛpam ,
phalaṁ mūlaṁ ca bubhuje rājñā dattaṁ sahānujaḥ.
36. yat annaḥ hi naraḥ rājan tat annaḥ asya
atithiḥ smṛtaḥ iti uktaḥ saḥ tathā iti
eva prāha dharma ātmajaḥ nṛpam phalam
mūlam ca bubhuje rājñā dattam saha anujaḥ
36. rājan hi yat annaḥ naraḥ tat annaḥ asya
atithiḥ smṛtaḥ iti uktaḥ saḥ dharma
ātmajaḥ nṛpam tathā iti eva prāha saha
anujaḥ rājñā dattam phalam mūlam ca bubhuje
36. "Indeed, O King, a man's guest is understood to partake of the same food (anna) as his host." Thus addressed, Yudhishthira, the son of (dharma), replied to the king, saying, "So be it." Then, along with his younger brothers, he consumed the fruits and roots offered by the king.
ततस्ते वृक्षमूलेषु कृतवासपरिग्रहाः ।
तां रात्रिं न्यवसन्सर्वे फलमूलजलाशनाः ॥३७॥
37. tataste vṛkṣamūleṣu kṛtavāsaparigrahāḥ ,
tāṁ rātriṁ nyavasansarve phalamūlajalāśanāḥ.
37. tataḥ te vṛkṣamūleṣu kṛtavāsaparigrahāḥ tām
rātrim nyavasan sarve phalamūlajalāśanāḥ
37. tataḥ sarve te kṛtavāsaparigrahāḥ vṛkṣamūleṣu
phalamūlajalāśanāḥ tām rātrim nyavasan
37. Then, having made their dwelling arrangements at the foot of trees, all of them spent that night, subsisting on fruits, roots, and water.
