वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रतीपो राजा स सर्वभूतहिते रतः ।
निषसाद समा बह्वीर्गङ्गातीरगतो जपन् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ pratīpo rājā sa sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ,
niṣasāda samā bahvīrgaṅgātīragato japan.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, King Pratīpa, devoted to the welfare of all beings, sat on the bank of the Gaṅgā for many years, chanting prayers.
तस्य रूपगुणोपेता गङ्गा श्रीरिव रूपिणी ।
उत्तीर्य सलिलात्तस्माल्लोभनीयतमाकृतिः ॥२॥
2. tasya rūpaguṇopetā gaṅgā śrīriva rūpiṇī ,
uttīrya salilāttasmāllobhanīyatamākṛtiḥ.
2. tasya rūpaguṇopetā gaṅgā śrīḥ iva rūpiṇī
uttīrya salilāt tasmāt lobhanīyatamākṛtiḥ
2. Gaṅgā, resembling the embodied goddess Śrī, and possessing his (the king's) very own beauty and virtues, emerged from that water with a most captivating form.
अधीयानस्य राजर्षेर्दिव्यरूपा मनस्विनी ।
दक्षिणं शालसंकाशमूरुं भेजे शुभानना ॥३॥
3. adhīyānasya rājarṣerdivyarūpā manasvinī ,
dakṣiṇaṁ śālasaṁkāśamūruṁ bheje śubhānanā.
3. adhīyānasya rājarṣeḥ divyarūpā manasvinī
dakṣiṇam śālasaṃkāśam ūrum bheje śubhānanā
3. Of divine form, noble-minded, and fair-faced, she resorted to the right thigh, firm like a śāla tree, of the royal sage who was engaged in recitation.
प्रतीपस्तु महीपालस्तामुवाच मनस्विनीम् ।
करवाणि किं ते कल्याणि प्रियं यत्तेऽभिकाङ्क्षितम् ॥४॥
4. pratīpastu mahīpālastāmuvāca manasvinīm ,
karavāṇi kiṁ te kalyāṇi priyaṁ yatte'bhikāṅkṣitam.
4. pratīpaḥ tu mahīpālaḥ tām uvāca manasvinīm karavāṇi
kim te kalyāṇi priyam yat te abhikāṅkṣitam
4. But King Prateepa said to that intelligent woman, 'O auspicious one, what is that dear thing you desire that I shall do for you?'
स्त्र्युवाच ।
त्वामहं कामये राजन्कुरुश्रेष्ठ भजस्व माम् ।
त्यागः कामवतीनां हि स्त्रीणां सद्भिर्विगर्हितः ॥५॥
5. stryuvāca ,
tvāmahaṁ kāmaye rājankuruśreṣṭha bhajasva mām ,
tyāgaḥ kāmavatīnāṁ hi strīṇāṁ sadbhirvigarhitaḥ.
5. strī uvāca tvām aham kāmaye rājan kuruśreṣṭha bhajasva
mām tyāgaḥ kāmavatīnām hi strīṇām sadbhiḥ vigarhitaḥ
5. The woman said, 'O King, O best of the Kurus, I desire you, so please accept me. Indeed, the abandonment of women who desire [a man] is censured by virtuous persons.'
प्रतीप उवाच ।
नाहं परस्त्रियं कामाद्गच्छेयं वरवर्णिनि ।
न चासवर्णां कल्याणि धर्म्यं तद्विद्धि मे व्रतम् ॥६॥
6. pratīpa uvāca ,
nāhaṁ parastriyaṁ kāmādgaccheyaṁ varavarṇini ,
na cāsavarṇāṁ kalyāṇi dharmyaṁ tadviddhi me vratam.
6. pratīpaḥ uvāca na aham parastriyam kāmāt gaccheyam varavarṇini
na ca asavarṇām kalyāṇi dharmyam tat viddhi me vratam
6. Prateepa said, 'O lady of beautiful complexion, I would not approach another man's wife out of desire. And, O auspicious one, I would not approach a woman of a different varṇa (social class). Know that to be my righteous vow.'
स्त्र्युवाच ।
नाश्रेयस्यस्मि नागम्या न वक्तव्या च कर्हिचित् ।
भज मां भजमानां त्वं राजन्कन्यां वरस्त्रियम् ॥७॥
7. stryuvāca ,
nāśreyasyasmi nāgamyā na vaktavyā ca karhicit ,
bhaja māṁ bhajamānāṁ tvaṁ rājankanyāṁ varastriyam.
7. strī uvāca na aśreyasī asmi na āgamyā na vaktavyā ca
karhicit bhaja mām bhajamānām tvam rājan kanyām varastriyam
7. The woman said, 'I am not inferior, nor am I forbidden [to you], nor am I ever to be reprimanded. O King, please accept me, who am a maiden and an excellent woman desiring you.'
प्रतीप उवाच ।
मयातिवृत्तमेतत्ते यन्मां चोदयसि प्रियम् ।
अन्यथा प्रतिपन्नं मां नाशयेद्धर्मविप्लवः ॥८॥
8. pratīpa uvāca ,
mayātivṛttametatte yanmāṁ codayasi priyam ,
anyathā pratipannaṁ māṁ nāśayeddharmaviplavaḥ.
8. pratīpaḥ uvāca mayā ativṛttam etat te yat mām codayasi
priyam anyathā pratipannam mām nāśayet dharmaviplavaḥ
8. Prateepa said, 'This matter, by which you urge me to do what is pleasing, would be a transgression for me. Otherwise, if I were to accept you, a violation of dharma would certainly destroy me.'
प्राप्य दक्षिणमूरुं मे त्वमाश्लिष्टा वराङ्गने ।
अपत्यानां स्नुषाणां च भीरु विद्ध्येतदासनम् ॥९॥
9. prāpya dakṣiṇamūruṁ me tvamāśliṣṭā varāṅgane ,
apatyānāṁ snuṣāṇāṁ ca bhīru viddhyetadāsanam.
9. prāpya dakṣiṇam ūrum me tvam āśliṣṭā varāṅgane
apatyānām snuṣāṇām ca bhīru viddhi etat āsanam
9. O beautiful lady, you have embraced my right thigh. O timid one, know that this is the seat for children and daughters-in-law.
सव्यतः कामिनीभागस्त्वया स च विवर्जितः ।
तस्मादहं नाचरिष्ये त्वयि कामं वराङ्गने ॥१०॥
10. savyataḥ kāminībhāgastvayā sa ca vivarjitaḥ ,
tasmādahaṁ nācariṣye tvayi kāmaṁ varāṅgane.
10. savyataḥ kāminībhāgaḥ tvayā saḥ ca vivarjitaḥ
tasmāt aham na ācariṣye tvayi kāmam varāṅgane
10. And the portion on the left side, meant for a lover, has been shunned by you. Therefore, O beautiful lady, I will not engage in carnal desire with you.
स्नुषा मे भव कल्याणि पुत्रार्थे त्वां वृणोम्यहम् ।
स्नुषापक्षं हि वामोरु त्वमागम्य समाश्रिता ॥११॥
11. snuṣā me bhava kalyāṇi putrārthe tvāṁ vṛṇomyaham ,
snuṣāpakṣaṁ hi vāmoru tvamāgamya samāśritā.
11. snuṣā me bhava kalyāṇi putrārthe tvām vṛṇomi
aham snuṣāpakṣam hi vāmorū tvam āgamya samāśritā
11. O blessed one, be my daughter-in-law. I choose you for the sake of a son. For, O beautiful-thighed one, you have indeed come and taken refuge on the side of daughters-in-law.
स्त्र्युवाच ।
एवमप्यस्तु धर्मज्ञ संयुज्येयं सुतेन ते ।
त्वद्भक्त्यैव भजिष्यामि प्रख्यातं भारतं कुलम् ॥१२॥
12. stryuvāca ,
evamapyastu dharmajña saṁyujyeyaṁ sutena te ,
tvadbhaktyaiva bhajiṣyāmi prakhyātaṁ bhārataṁ kulam.
12. strī uvāca evam api astu dharmajña saṃyujyeyam sutena
te tvatbhaktyā eva bhajiṣyāmi prakhyātam bhāratam kulam
12. The woman said: "So be it, O knower of dharma. May I be united with your son. By my devotion to you, I shall serve your renowned lineage of Bharata."
पृथिव्यां पार्थिवा ये च तेषां यूयं परायणम् ।
गुणा न हि मया शक्या वक्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ।
कुलस्य ये वः प्रस्थितास्तत्साधुत्वमनुत्तमम् ॥१३॥
13. pṛthivyāṁ pārthivā ye ca teṣāṁ yūyaṁ parāyaṇam ,
guṇā na hi mayā śakyā vaktuṁ varṣaśatairapi ,
kulasya ye vaḥ prasthitāstatsādhutvamanuttamam.
13. pṛthivyām pārthivāḥ ye ca teṣām yūyam
parāyaṇam guṇāḥ na hi mayā śakyāḥ
vaktum varṣaśataiḥ api kulasya ye vaḥ
prasthitāḥ tat sādhutvam anuttamam
13. Among all the kings on earth, you are indeed their supreme refuge. Even in hundreds of years, I am not able to fully describe the qualities of your lineage that are established among you, that unsurpassed excellence.
स मे नाभिजनज्ञः स्यादाचरेयं च यद्विभो ।
तत्सर्वमेव पुत्रस्ते न मीमांसेत कर्हिचित् ॥१४॥
14. sa me nābhijanajñaḥ syādācareyaṁ ca yadvibho ,
tatsarvameva putraste na mīmāṁseta karhicit.
14. sa me na abhijana jñaḥ syāt ācareyam ca yat vibho
tat sarvam eva putraḥ te na mīmāṃseta karhicit
14. He should not know my lineage, and whatever I do, O Lord, your son should never question any of it.
एवं वसन्ती पुत्रे ते वर्धयिष्याम्यहं प्रियम् ।
पुत्रैः पुण्यैः प्रियैश्चापि स्वर्गं प्राप्स्यति ते सुतः ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ vasantī putre te vardhayiṣyāmyahaṁ priyam ,
putraiḥ puṇyaiḥ priyaiścāpi svargaṁ prāpsyati te sutaḥ.
15. evam vasantī putre te vardhayiṣyāmi aham priyam putraiḥ
puṇyaiḥ priyaiḥ ca api svargam prāpsyati te sutaḥ
15. Thus dwelling with your son, I shall increase his beloved ones (or fortune). And through righteous and beloved sons, your son will attain heaven.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा राजंस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
पुत्रजन्म प्रतीक्षंस्तु स राजा तदधारयत् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā tu sā rājaṁstatraivāntaradhīyata ,
putrajanma pratīkṣaṁstu sa rājā tadadhārayat.
16. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tathā iti uktvā tu sā rājan tatra eva
antaradhīyata putrajanma pratīkṣan tu saḥ rājā tat adhārayat
16. Vaiśampāyana said: "Having said, 'So be it,' O King, she vanished right there. That king, however, anticipating the birth of a son, held onto that (promise)."
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु प्रतीपः क्षत्रियर्षभः ।
तपस्तेपे सुतस्यार्थे सभार्यः कुरुनन्दन ॥१७॥
17. etasminneva kāle tu pratīpaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ,
tapastepe sutasyārthe sabhāryaḥ kurunandana.
17. etasmin eva kāle tu pratīpaḥ kṣatriya ṛṣabhaḥ
tapaḥ tepe sutasya arthe sabhāryaḥ kurunandana
17. At that very time, O joy of the Kurus, Pratīpa, the foremost among kshatriyas, performed tapas along with his wife for the sake of a son.
तयोः समभवत्पुत्रो वृद्धयोः स महाभिषः ।
शान्तस्य जज्ञे संतानस्तस्मादासीत्स शंतनुः ॥१८॥
18. tayoḥ samabhavatputro vṛddhayoḥ sa mahābhiṣaḥ ,
śāntasya jajñe saṁtānastasmādāsītsa śaṁtanuḥ.
18. tayoḥ samabhavat putraḥ vṛddhayoḥ saḥ mahābhiṣaḥ
śāntasya jajñe saṃtānaḥ tasmāt āsīt saḥ śaṃtanuḥ
18. To those two aged parents, that son, Mahābhiṣa, was born. An offspring of peace was born, and from that (quality), he became Śaṃtanu.
संस्मरंश्चाक्षयाँल्लोकान्विजितान्स्वेन कर्मणा ।
पुण्यकर्मकृदेवासीच्छंतनुः कुरुसत्तम ॥१९॥
19. saṁsmaraṁścākṣayāँllokānvijitānsvena karmaṇā ,
puṇyakarmakṛdevāsīcchaṁtanuḥ kurusattama.
19. saṃsmaran ca akṣayān lokān vijitān svena karmaṇā
puṇyakarmakṛt eva āsīt śaṃtanuḥ kurusattama
19. O best of the Kurus, Shantanu, remembering the imperishable realms he had conquered through his own actions, was indeed a performer of meritorious deeds.
प्रतीपः शंतनुं पुत्रं यौवनस्थं ततोऽन्वशात् ।
पुरा मां स्त्री समभ्यागाच्छंतनो भूतये तव ॥२०॥
20. pratīpaḥ śaṁtanuṁ putraṁ yauvanasthaṁ tato'nvaśāt ,
purā māṁ strī samabhyāgācchaṁtano bhūtaye tava.
20. pratīpaḥ śaṃtanuṃ putraṃ yauvanasthaṃ tataḥ anvaśāt
purā māṃ strī samabhyāgāt śaṃtano bhūtaye tava
20. Then Prateepa instructed his son Shantanu, who was in his youth: 'Long ago, O Shantanu, a woman approached me for your welfare.'
त्वामाव्रजेद्यदि रहः सा पुत्र वरवर्णिनी ।
कामयानाभिरूपाढ्या दिव्या स्त्री पुत्रकाम्यया ।
सा त्वया नानुयोक्तव्या कासि कस्यासि वाङ्गने ॥२१॥
21. tvāmāvrajedyadi rahaḥ sā putra varavarṇinī ,
kāmayānābhirūpāḍhyā divyā strī putrakāmyayā ,
sā tvayā nānuyoktavyā kāsi kasyāsi vāṅgane.
21. tvām āvrajet yadi rahaḥ sā putra
varavarṇinī kāmayānā abhirūpāḍhyā divyā
strī putrakāmyayā sā tvayā na
anuyoktavyā kā asi kasyāḥ asi vā aṅgane
21. O son, if that beautiful, divine woman of excellent complexion, full of desire and endowed with beauty, should approach you privately with the desire for a son, you must not question her. Do not ask, 'Who are you, or whose are you, O lady?'
यच्च कुर्यान्न तत्कार्यं प्रष्टव्या सा त्वयानघ ।
मन्नियोगाद्भजन्तीं तां भजेथा इत्युवाच तम् ॥२२॥
22. yacca kuryānna tatkāryaṁ praṣṭavyā sā tvayānagha ,
manniyogādbhajantīṁ tāṁ bhajethā ityuvāca tam.
22. yat ca kuryāt na tat kāryaṃ praṣṭavyā sā tvayā anagha
mat niyogāt bhajantīṃ tāṃ bhajethāḥ iti uvāca tam
22. O sinless one, whatever she may do, you should not interfere with it, nor should she be questioned by you. He said to him, 'By my command, you should cherish that woman who serves (you).'
एवं संदिश्य तनयं प्रतीपः शंतनुं तदा ।
स्वे च राज्येऽभिषिच्यैनं वनं राजा विवेश ह ॥२३॥
23. evaṁ saṁdiśya tanayaṁ pratīpaḥ śaṁtanuṁ tadā ,
sve ca rājye'bhiṣicyainaṁ vanaṁ rājā viveśa ha.
23. evaṃ saṃdiśya tanayaṃ pratīpaḥ śaṃtanuṃ tadā
sve ca rājye abhiṣicya enaṃ vanaṃ rājā viveśa ha
23. Having thus instructed his son Shantanu, King Prateepa then consecrated him to his own kingdom and indeed entered the forest.
स राजा शंतनुर्धीमान्ख्यातः पृथ्व्यां धनुर्धरः ।
बभूव मृगयाशीलः सततं वनगोचरः ॥२४॥
24. sa rājā śaṁtanurdhīmānkhyātaḥ pṛthvyāṁ dhanurdharaḥ ,
babhūva mṛgayāśīlaḥ satataṁ vanagocaraḥ.
24. saḥ rājā śantanuḥ dhīmān khyātaḥ pṛthvyām
dhanurdharaḥ babhūva mṛgayāśīlaḥ satatam vanagocaraḥ
24. That intelligent King Śantanu, renowned on earth as an archer, became fond of hunting and constantly roamed the forest.
स मृगान्महिषांश्चैव विनिघ्नन्राजसत्तमः ।
गङ्गामनुचचारैकः सिद्धचारणसेविताम् ॥२५॥
25. sa mṛgānmahiṣāṁścaiva vinighnanrājasattamaḥ ,
gaṅgāmanucacāraikaḥ siddhacāraṇasevitām.
25. saḥ mṛgān mahiṣān ca eva vinighnan rājasattamaḥ
gaṅgām anucacāra ekaḥ siddhacāraṇasevitām
25. That best of kings, while hunting deer and buffaloes, roamed alone along the Gaṅgā, which was frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.
स कदाचिन्महाराज ददर्श परमस्त्रियम् ।
जाज्वल्यमानां वपुषा साक्षात्पद्मामिव श्रियम् ॥२६॥
26. sa kadācinmahārāja dadarśa paramastriyam ,
jājvalyamānāṁ vapuṣā sākṣātpadmāmiva śriyam.
26. saḥ kadācit mahārāja dadarśa paramastriyam
jājvalyamānām vapuṣā sākṣāt padmām iva śriyam
26. O great king, one day he saw an exceptionally beautiful woman, shining brightly with her body, like the goddess Śrī (Lakshmi) herself, radiant as a lotus.
सर्वानवद्यां सुदतीं दिव्याभरणभूषिताम् ।
सूक्ष्माम्बरधरामेकां पद्मोदरसमप्रभाम् ॥२७॥
27. sarvānavadyāṁ sudatīṁ divyābharaṇabhūṣitām ,
sūkṣmāmbaradharāmekāṁ padmodarasamaprabhām.
27. sarvānavadyām sudatīm divyābharaṇabhūṣitām
sūkṣmāmbaradharām ekām padmodarasamaprabhām
27. She was faultless in every limb, with beautiful teeth, adorned with divine ornaments, wearing fine garments, unique, and radiant like the interior of a lotus.
तां दृष्ट्वा हृष्टरोमाभूद्विस्मितो रूपसंपदा ।
पिबन्निव च नेत्राभ्यां नातृप्यत नराधिपः ॥२८॥
28. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaromābhūdvismito rūpasaṁpadā ,
pibanniva ca netrābhyāṁ nātṛpyata narādhipaḥ.
28. tām dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭaromā abhūt vismitaḥ rūpasaṃpadā
piban iva ca netrābhyām na atṛpyata narādhipaḥ
28. Having seen her, the king's hair stood on end, and he was astonished by her beauty. He could not be satisfied, as if drinking her in with his eyes.
सा च दृष्ट्वैव राजानं विचरन्तं महाद्युतिम् ।
स्नेहादागतसौहार्दा नातृप्यत विलासिनी ॥२९॥
29. sā ca dṛṣṭvaiva rājānaṁ vicarantaṁ mahādyutim ,
snehādāgatasauhārdā nātṛpyata vilāsinī.
29. sā ca dṛṣṭvā eva rājānam vicarāntam mahādyutim
snehāt āgatasauhārdā na atṛpyata vilāsinī
29. And she, the charming lady, having merely seen the king, who was wandering with great splendor, and having developed affection from love, was not satisfied (with merely seeing him).
तामुवाच ततो राजा सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
देवी वा दानवी वा त्वं गन्धर्वी यदि वाप्सराः ॥३०॥
30. tāmuvāca tato rājā sāntvayañślakṣṇayā girā ,
devī vā dānavī vā tvaṁ gandharvī yadi vāpsarāḥ.
30. tām uvāca tataḥ rājā sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā girā
devī vā dānavī vā tvam gandharvī yadi vā apsarāḥ
30. Then the king, consoling her with gentle words, said to her, "Are you a goddess, or a Dānavī, or a Gandharvī, or an Apsarā?"
यक्षी वा पन्नगी वापि मानुषी वा सुमध्यमे ।
या वा त्वं सुरगर्भाभे भार्या मे भव शोभने ॥३१॥
31. yakṣī vā pannagī vāpi mānuṣī vā sumadhyame ,
yā vā tvaṁ suragarbhābhe bhāryā me bhava śobhane.
31. yakṣī vā pannagī vā api mānuṣī vā sumadhyame yā
vā tvam suragarbhābhe bhāryā me bhava śobhane
31. "Or are you a Yakṣī, or a Pannagī, or even a human woman, O slender-waisted one? Whoever you are, O radiant one (with a divine aura), be my wife, O beautiful one."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राज्ञः सस्मितं मृदु वल्गु च ।
वसूनां समयं स्मृत्वा अभ्यगच्छदनिन्दिता ॥३२॥
32. etacchrutvā vaco rājñaḥ sasmitaṁ mṛdu valgu ca ,
vasūnāṁ samayaṁ smṛtvā abhyagacchadaninditā.
32. etat śrutvā vacaḥ rājñaḥ sasmitam mṛdu valgu ca
vasūnām samayam smṛtvā abhyagacchat aninditā
32. Having heard these words of the king, which were gentle, charming, and spoken with a smile, and having remembered the agreement concerning the Vasus, the blameless lady approached him.
उवाच चैव राज्ञः सा ह्लादयन्ती मनो गिरा ।
भविष्यामि महीपाल महिषी ते वशानुगा ॥३३॥
33. uvāca caiva rājñaḥ sā hlādayantī mano girā ,
bhaviṣyāmi mahīpāla mahiṣī te vaśānugā.
33. uvāca ca eva rājñaḥ sā hlādayantī manaḥ
girā bhaviṣyāmi mahīpāla mahiṣī te vaśānugā
33. And she, gladdening the king's mind with her words, indeed spoke to him: "O protector of the earth, I will be your queen, obedient to your will."
यत्तु कुर्यामहं राजञ्शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम् ।
न तद्वारयितव्यास्मि न वक्तव्या तथाप्रियम् ॥३४॥
34. yattu kuryāmahaṁ rājañśubhaṁ vā yadi vāśubham ,
na tadvārayitavyāsmi na vaktavyā tathāpriyam.
34. yat tu kuryām aham rājan śubham vā yadi vā aśubham
| na tat vārayitavyā asmi na vaktavyā tathā apriyam
34. O king, whatever I may do, whether good or bad, I must not be forbidden from it, nor should you speak such unpleasant words to me.
एवं हि वर्तमानेऽहं त्वयि वत्स्यामि पार्थिव ।
वारिता विप्रियं चोक्ता त्यजेयं त्वामसंशयम् ॥३५॥
35. evaṁ hi vartamāne'haṁ tvayi vatsyāmi pārthiva ,
vāritā vipriyaṁ coktā tyajeyaṁ tvāmasaṁśayam.
35. evam hi vartamāne aham tvayi vatsyāmi pārthiva |
vāritā vipriyam ca uktā tyajeyam tvām asaṃśayam
35. O king, if you continue to act in this manner (as agreed), I will stay with you. But if I am prevented (from my actions) or spoken to with unpleasant words, I would certainly abandon you.
तथेति राज्ञा सा तूक्ता तदा भरतसत्तम ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे प्राप्य तं पार्थिवोत्तमम् ॥३६॥
36. tatheti rājñā sā tūktā tadā bharatasattama ,
praharṣamatulaṁ lebhe prāpya taṁ pārthivottamam.
36. tathā iti rājñā sā tu uktā tadā bharatasattama |
praharṣam atulam lebhe prāpya tam pārthivottamam
36. O best of Bharatas, when the king then said to her, "So be it," she felt incomparable joy, having indeed obtained that excellent monarch.
आसाद्य शंतनुस्तां च बुभुजे कामतो वशी ।
न प्रष्टव्येति मन्वानो न स तां किंचिदूचिवान् ॥३७॥
37. āsādya śaṁtanustāṁ ca bubhuje kāmato vaśī ,
na praṣṭavyeti manvāno na sa tāṁ kiṁcidūcivān.
37. āsādya śantanuḥ tām ca bubhuje kāmataḥ vaśī | na
praṣṭavyā iti manvānaḥ na sa tām kiñcit ūcivān
37. Having met her, Shantanu, though self-controlled, enjoyed her as he desired. But, considering that she was not to be questioned, he did not say anything to her.
स तस्याः शीलवृत्तेन रूपौदार्यगुणेन च ।
उपचारेण च रहस्तुतोष जगतीपतिः ॥३८॥
38. sa tasyāḥ śīlavṛttena rūpaudāryaguṇena ca ,
upacāreṇa ca rahastutoṣa jagatīpatiḥ.
38. sa tasyāḥ śīlavṛttena rūpaudāryaguṇena ca
| upacāreṇa ca rahaḥ tutoṣa jagatīpatiḥ
38. The lord of the earth was pleased by her good conduct, by the qualities of her beauty and generosity, and by her attentive service, even in private.
दिव्यरूपा हि सा देवी गङ्गा त्रिपथगा नदी ।
मानुषं विग्रहं श्रीमत्कृत्वा सा वरवर्णिनी ॥३९॥
39. divyarūpā hi sā devī gaṅgā tripathagā nadī ,
mānuṣaṁ vigrahaṁ śrīmatkṛtvā sā varavarṇinī.
39. divyarūpā hi sā devī gaṅgā tripathagā nadī
mānuṣam vigraham śrīmat kṛtvā sā varavarṇinī
39. Indeed, that divine goddess Gaṅgā, the river flowing in three paths, assumed a glorious human form; she was a woman of exquisite beauty.
भाग्योपनतकामस्य भार्येवोपस्थिताभवत् ।
शंतनो राजसिंहस्य देवराजसमद्युतेः ॥४०॥
40. bhāgyopanatakāmasya bhāryevopasthitābhavat ,
śaṁtano rājasiṁhasya devarājasamadyuteḥ.
40. bhāgyopanatakāmasya bhāryā iva upasthitā
abhavat śaṃtanoḥ rājasiṃhasya devarājasaadyuteḥ
40. She appeared like a wife to King Śaṃtanu, the lion among kings, whose desires were fulfilled by good fortune and whose splendor was like that of the king of gods.
संभोगस्नेहचातुर्यैर्हावलास्यैर्मनोहरैः ।
राजानं रमयामास यथा रेमे तथैव सः ॥४१॥
41. saṁbhogasnehacāturyairhāvalāsyairmanoharaiḥ ,
rājānaṁ ramayāmāsa yathā reme tathaiva saḥ.
41. saṃbhoghasnehacāturyaiḥ hāvalāsyaiḥ manoharaiḥ
rājānam ramayāmāsa yathā reme tathā eva saḥ
41. With captivating skills in love and affection, and with charming coquettish gestures and playful acts, she delighted the king, and he, in turn, was equally delighted.
स राजा रतिसक्तत्वादुत्तमस्त्रीगुणैर्हृतः ।
संवत्सरानृतून्मासान्न बुबोध बहून्गतान् ॥४२॥
42. sa rājā ratisaktatvāduttamastrīguṇairhṛtaḥ ,
saṁvatsarānṛtūnmāsānna bubodha bahūngatān.
42. sa rājā ratisaktatvāt uttamastrīguṇaiḥ hṛtaḥ
saṃvatsarān ṛtūn māsān na bubodha bahūn gatān
42. That king, captivated by the excellent qualities of the woman and deeply engrossed in love, did not realize the many years, seasons, and months that had passed.
रममाणस्तया सार्धं यथाकामं जनेश्वरः ।
अष्टावजनयत्पुत्रांस्तस्याममरवर्णिनः ॥४३॥
43. ramamāṇastayā sārdhaṁ yathākāmaṁ janeśvaraḥ ,
aṣṭāvajanayatputrāṁstasyāmamaravarṇinaḥ.
43. ramamāṇaḥ tayā sārdham yathākāmam janeśvaraḥ
aṣṭau ajanayat putrān tasyām amaravarṇinaḥ
43. The king, enjoying with her as he wished, begot eight sons from her, who possessed divine beauty.
जातं जातं च सा पुत्रं क्षिपत्यम्भसि भारत ।
प्रीणामि त्वाहमित्युक्त्वा गङ्गास्रोतस्यमज्जयत् ॥४४॥
44. jātaṁ jātaṁ ca sā putraṁ kṣipatyambhasi bhārata ,
prīṇāmi tvāhamityuktvā gaṅgāsrotasyamajjayat.
44. jātam jātam ca sā putram kṣipati ambhasi bhārata
prīṇāmi tvā aham iti uktvā gaṅgā-srotasi amajjayat
44. And she, O Bhārata, each child that was born, would throw into the water. Saying 'I please you,' she would immerse it in the current of the Gaṅgā.
तस्य तन्न प्रियं राज्ञः शंतनोरभवत्तदा ।
न च तां किंचनोवाच त्यागाद्भीतो महीपतिः ॥४५॥
45. tasya tanna priyaṁ rājñaḥ śaṁtanorabhavattadā ,
na ca tāṁ kiṁcanovāca tyāgādbhīto mahīpatiḥ.
45. tasya tat na priyam rājñaḥ śaṃtanoḥ abhavat tadā
na ca tām kiṃcana uvāca tyāgāt bhītaḥ mahīpatiḥ
45. That act was not pleasing to King Śaṃtanu at that time. And the king, fearing her departure, said nothing at all to her.
अथ तामष्टमे पुत्रे जाते प्रहसितामिव ।
उवाच राजा दुःखार्तः परीप्सन्पुत्रमात्मनः ॥४६॥
46. atha tāmaṣṭame putre jāte prahasitāmiva ,
uvāca rājā duḥkhārtaḥ parīpsanputramātmanaḥ.
46. atha tām aṣṭame putre jāte prahasitām iva
uvāca rājā duḥkhārtaḥ parīpsan putram ātmanaḥ
46. Then, when the eighth son was born and she appeared to be laughing, the king, greatly distressed, spoke to her, wishing to save his own son.
मा वधीः कासि कस्यासि किं हिंससि सुतानिति ।
पुत्रघ्नि सुमहत्पापं मा प्रापस्तिष्ठ गर्हिते ॥४७॥
47. mā vadhīḥ kāsi kasyāsi kiṁ hiṁsasi sutāniti ,
putraghni sumahatpāpaṁ mā prāpastiṣṭha garhite.
47. mā vadhīḥ kā asi kasya asi kim hiṃsasi sutān iti
putra-ghni sumahat pāpam mā prāpaḥ tiṣṭha garhite
47. 'Do not kill! Who are you? Whose are you? Why do you harm your sons?' (he said). 'O killer of sons, do not incur such a great sin! Stop, you hateful woman!'
स्त्र्युवाच ।
पुत्रकाम न ते हन्मि पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वर ।
जीर्णस्तु मम वासोऽयं यथा स समयः कृतः ॥४८॥
48. stryuvāca ,
putrakāma na te hanmi putraṁ putravatāṁ vara ,
jīrṇastu mama vāso'yaṁ yathā sa samayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
48. strī uvāca putra-kāma na te hanmi putram putra-vatām
vara jīrṇaḥ tu mama vāsaḥ ayam yathā sa samayaḥ kṛtaḥ
48. The woman said: 'O you who desire a son, I will not kill this son of yours, O best among those with sons. But this stay of mine is now at its end, as that condition (we made) has been fulfilled.'
अहं गङ्गा जह्नुसुता महर्षिगणसेविता ।
देवकार्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमुषिटाहं त्वया सह ॥४९॥
49. ahaṁ gaṅgā jahnusutā maharṣigaṇasevitā ,
devakāryārthasiddhyarthamuṣiṭāhaṁ tvayā saha.
49. aham gaṅgā jahnusutā maharṣigaṇasevitā
devakāryārthasiddhyartham uṣiṭā aham tvayā saha
49. I am Ganga, the daughter of Jahnu, revered by groups of great sages. For the purpose of accomplishing the work of the gods, I have resided with you.
अष्टेमे वसवो देवा महाभागा महौजसः ।
वसिष्ठशापदोषेण मानुषत्वमुपागताः ॥५०॥
50. aṣṭeme vasavo devā mahābhāgā mahaujasaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhaśāpadoṣeṇa mānuṣatvamupāgatāḥ.
50. aṣṭau ime vasavaḥ devāḥ mahābhāgāḥ mahaujasas
vasiṣṭhaśāpadoṣeṇa mānuṣatvam upāgatāḥ
50. These eight Vasu gods, who are greatly fortunate and immensely powerful, have attained human existence due to the consequence of Vasiṣṭha's curse.
तेषां जनयिता नान्यस्त्वदृते भुवि विद्यते ।
मद्विधा मानुषी धात्री न चैवास्तीह काचन ॥५१॥
51. teṣāṁ janayitā nānyastvadṛte bhuvi vidyate ,
madvidhā mānuṣī dhātrī na caivāstīha kācana.
51. teṣām janayitā na anyaḥ tvat ṛte bhuvi vidyate
mat vidhā mānuṣī dhātrī na ca eva asti iha kācana
51. No one else on earth except you can be their father (begetter). Nor is there any human mother like me here.
तस्मात्तज्जननीहेतोर्मानुषत्वमुपागता ।
जनयित्वा वसूनष्टौ जिता लोकास्त्वयाक्षयाः ॥५२॥
52. tasmāttajjananīhetormānuṣatvamupāgatā ,
janayitvā vasūnaṣṭau jitā lokāstvayākṣayāḥ.
52. tasmāt tat jananī hetoḥ mānuṣatvam upāgatā
janayitvā vasūn aṣṭau jitāḥ lokāḥ tvayā akṣayāḥ
52. Therefore, for the sake of being their mother, I have assumed human form. By begetting the eight Vasus, imperishable worlds will be conquered by you.
देवानां समयस्त्वेष वसूनां संश्रुतो मया ।
जातं जातं मोक्षयिष्ये जन्मतो मानुषादिति ॥५३॥
53. devānāṁ samayastveṣa vasūnāṁ saṁśruto mayā ,
jātaṁ jātaṁ mokṣayiṣye janmato mānuṣāditi.
53. devānām samayaḥ tu eṣaḥ vasūnām saṁśrutaḥ mayā
jātam jātam mokṣayiṣye janmataḥ mānuṣāt iti
53. This is the agreement of the gods concerning the Vasus, which I have promised. I will release each one as soon as he is born from human existence.
तत्ते शापाद्विनिर्मुक्ता आपवस्य महात्मनः ।
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि पुत्रं पाहि महाव्रतम् ॥५४॥
54. tatte śāpādvinirmuktā āpavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi putraṁ pāhi mahāvratam.
54. tat te śāpāt vinirmuktā āpavasya mahātmanaḥ
svasti te astu gamiṣyāmi putram pāhi mahāvratam
54. I am now released from that curse of the great-souled Āpava. May well-being be yours. I shall go; protect this son, who is of great vows.
एष पर्यायवासो मे वसूनां संनिधौ कृतः ।
मत्प्रसूतं विजानीहि गङ्गादत्तमिमं सुतम् ॥५५॥
55. eṣa paryāyavāso me vasūnāṁ saṁnidhau kṛtaḥ ,
matprasūtaṁ vijānīhi gaṅgādattamimaṁ sutam.
55. eṣaḥ paryāyavāsaḥ me vasūnām saṃnidhau kṛtaḥ
matprasūtam vijānīhi gaṅgādattam imam sutam
55. This period of my dwelling has been completed in the presence of the Vasus. Recognize this son, born of me, as the one given by Gaṅgā.
