बृहदश्व उवाच ।
स मासमुष्य कौन्तेय भीममामन्त्र्य नैषधः ।
पुरादल्पपरीवारो जगाम निषधान्प्रति ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
sa māsamuṣya kaunteya bhīmamāmantrya naiṣadhaḥ ,
purādalpaparīvāro jagāma niṣadhānprati.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: Having stayed for a month, O son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), that king of Niṣadha (Naiṣadha), having bid farewell to Bhīma, departed from the city with a small retinue towards Niṣadha.
रथेनैकेन शुभ्रेण दन्तिभिः परिषोडशैः ।
पञ्चाशद्भिर्हयैश्चैव षट्शतैश्च पदातिभिः ॥२॥
2. rathenaikena śubhreṇa dantibhiḥ pariṣoḍaśaiḥ ,
pañcāśadbhirhayaiścaiva ṣaṭśataiśca padātibhiḥ.
2. rathena ekena śubhrena dantibhiḥ pariṣoḍaśaiḥ
pañcāśadbhiḥ hayaiḥ ca eva ṣaṭśataiḥ ca padātibhiḥ
2. With one white chariot, sixteen elephants, fifty horses, and six hundred infantry.
स कम्पयन्निव महीं त्वरमाणो महीपतिः ।
प्रविवेशातिसंरब्धस्तरसैव महामनाः ॥३॥
3. sa kampayanniva mahīṁ tvaramāṇo mahīpatiḥ ,
praviveśātisaṁrabdhastarasaiva mahāmanāḥ.
3. sa kampayan iva mahīm tvaramāṇaḥ mahīpatiḥ
praviveśa atisaṃrabdhaḥ tarasā eva mahāmanāḥ
3. Hurrying, that great-minded king, as if shaking the earth, entered with extreme agitation and force.
ततः पुष्करमासाद्य वीरसेनसुतो नलः ।
उवाच दीव्याव पुनर्बहु वित्तं मयार्जितम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ puṣkaramāsādya vīrasenasuto nalaḥ ,
uvāca dīvyāva punarbahu vittaṁ mayārjitam.
4. tataḥ puṣkaram āsādya vīrasenasutaḥ nalaḥ
uvāca divyāva punaḥ bahu vittam mayā arjitam
4. Then Nala, the son of Virasena, having approached Pushkara, said: "Let us gamble again. Much wealth has been acquired by me."
दमयन्ती च यच्चान्यन्मया वसु समर्जितम् ।
एष वै मम संन्यासस्तव राज्यं तु पुष्कर ॥५॥
5. damayantī ca yaccānyanmayā vasu samarjitam ,
eṣa vai mama saṁnyāsastava rājyaṁ tu puṣkara.
5. damayantī ca yat ca anyat mayā vasu samarjitam
eṣaḥ vai mama saṃnyāsaḥ tava rājyam tu puṣkara
5. And Damayanti, along with whatever other wealth I have acquired – this is my offering (saṃnyāsa) for the wager. As for you, Pushkara, your kingdom is your stake.
पुनः प्रवर्ततां द्यूतमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ।
एकपाणेन भद्रं ते प्राणयोश्च पणावहे ॥६॥
6. punaḥ pravartatāṁ dyūtamiti me niścitā matiḥ ,
ekapāṇena bhadraṁ te prāṇayośca paṇāvahe.
6. punaḥ pravartatām dyūtam iti me niścitā matiḥ
ekapāṇena bhadram te prāṇayoḥ ca paṇāvahe
6. My mind is set on resuming the game of dice. May good fortune be with you; let us stake our very lives on a single throw.
जित्वा परस्वमाहृत्य राज्यं वा यदि वा वसु ।
प्रतिपाणः प्रदातव्यः परं हि धनमुच्यते ॥७॥
7. jitvā parasvamāhṛtya rājyaṁ vā yadi vā vasu ,
pratipāṇaḥ pradātavyaḥ paraṁ hi dhanamucyate.
7. jitvā parasvam āhṛtya rājyam vā yadi vā vasu
pratipāṇaḥ pradātavyaḥ param hi dhanam ucyate
7. After winning the property of others, whether it be a kingdom or other wealth, a counter-stake must be offered, for indeed, that is considered the greatest wealth.
न चेद्वाञ्छसि तद्द्यूतं युद्धद्यूतं प्रवर्तताम् ।
द्वैरथेनास्तु वै शान्तिस्तव वा मम वा नृप ॥८॥
8. na cedvāñchasi taddyūtaṁ yuddhadyūtaṁ pravartatām ,
dvairathenāstu vai śāntistava vā mama vā nṛpa.
8. na cet vāñchasi tat dyūtam yuddhadūtam pravartatām
dvairathena astu vai śāntiḥ tava vā mama vā nṛpa
8. If you do not wish for that game of dice, then let a battle-game commence. O king, let peace be established through single combat, whether it be for you or for me.
वंशभोज्यमिदं राज्यं मार्गितव्यं यथा तथा ।
येन तेनाप्युपायेन वृद्धानामिति शासनम् ॥९॥
9. vaṁśabhojyamidaṁ rājyaṁ mārgitavyaṁ yathā tathā ,
yena tenāpyupāyena vṛddhānāmiti śāsanam.
9. vaṃśabhojyam idam rājyam mārgitavyam yathā tathā
yena tena api upāyena vṛddhānām iti śāsanam
9. This kingdom, which is to be enjoyed by our lineage, must be retrieved by any means necessary. 'By whatever means possible,' that is the command of the elders.
द्वयोरेकतरे बुद्धिः क्रियतामद्य पुष्कर ।
कैतवेनाक्षवत्यां वा युद्धे वा नम्यतां धनुः ॥१०॥
10. dvayorekatare buddhiḥ kriyatāmadya puṣkara ,
kaitavenākṣavatyāṁ vā yuddhe vā namyatāṁ dhanuḥ.
10. dvayoḥ ekatare buddhiḥ kriyatām adya puṣkara
kaitavena akṣavatyām vā yuddhe vā namyatām dhanuḥ
10. Oh Puṣkara, let your mind be fixed today on one of two options: either on gambling with dice, or let your bow be bent in battle.
नैषधेनैवमुक्तस्तु पुष्करः प्रहसन्निव ।
ध्रुवमात्मजयं मत्वा प्रत्याह पृथिवीपतिम् ॥११॥
11. naiṣadhenaivamuktastu puṣkaraḥ prahasanniva ,
dhruvamātmajayaṁ matvā pratyāha pṛthivīpatim.
11. naiṣadhena eva uktaḥ tu puṣkaraḥ prahasan iva
dhruvam ātmajayam matvā prati āha pṛthivīpatim
11. Having been addressed thus by the king of Niṣadha, Puṣkara, as if laughing and considering his own victory (ātmajaya) certain, replied to the lord of the earth.
दिष्ट्या त्वयार्जितं वित्तं प्रतिपाणाय नैषध ।
दिष्ट्या च दुष्कृतं कर्म दमयन्त्याः क्षयं गतम् ।
दिष्ट्या च ध्रियसे राजन्सदारोऽरिनिबर्हण ॥१२॥
12. diṣṭyā tvayārjitaṁ vittaṁ pratipāṇāya naiṣadha ,
diṣṭyā ca duṣkṛtaṁ karma damayantyāḥ kṣayaṁ gatam ,
diṣṭyā ca dhriyase rājansadāro'rinibarhaṇa.
12. diṣṭyā tvayā arjitam vittam pratipāṇāya
naiṣadha diṣṭyā ca duṣkṛtam karma
damayantyāḥ kṣayam gatam diṣṭyā ca
dhriyase rājan sadāraḥ arinibarhaṇa
12. Fortunately, Nala, the wealth you have acquired is for the sake of a return stake. Fortunately, Damayantī's bad deeds (karma) have come to an end. And fortunately, O King, destroyer of enemies, you are sustained along with your wife.
धनेनानेन वैदर्भी जितेन समलंकृता ।
मामुपस्थास्यति व्यक्तं दिवि शक्रमिवाप्सराः ॥१३॥
13. dhanenānena vaidarbhī jitena samalaṁkṛtā ,
māmupasthāsyati vyaktaṁ divi śakramivāpsarāḥ.
13. dhanena anena vaidarbhī jitena samalaṃkṛtā mām
upasthāsyati vyaktam divi śakram iva apsarāḥ
13. Adorned with this won wealth, Vaidarbhī (Damayantī) will certainly approach me, just as an Apsara approaches Indra (Śakra) in heaven.
नित्यशो हि स्मरामि त्वां प्रतीक्षामि च नैषध ।
देवने च मम प्रीतिर्न भवत्यसुहृद्गणैः ॥१४॥
14. nityaśo hi smarāmi tvāṁ pratīkṣāmi ca naiṣadha ,
devane ca mama prītirna bhavatyasuhṛdgaṇaiḥ.
14. nityaśaḥ hi smarāmi tvām pratīkṣāmi ca naiṣadha
devane ca mama prītiḥ na bhavati asuhṛdgaṇaiḥ
14. Indeed, O Nala, I always remember you and long for you. Moreover, I find no pleasure in gambling with those who are not my friends.
जित्वा त्वद्य वरारोहां दमयन्तीमनिन्दिताम् ।
कृतकृत्यो भविष्यामि सा हि मे नित्यशो हृदि ॥१५॥
15. jitvā tvadya varārohāṁ damayantīmaninditām ,
kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyāmi sā hi me nityaśo hṛdi.
15. jitvā tu adya varārohām damayantīm aninditām
kṛtakṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyāmi sā hi me nityaśaḥ hṛdi
15. Once I have won the faultless, beautiful Damayantī today, I shall have achieved my purpose, for she is always in my heart.
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य ता वाचो बह्वबद्धप्रलापिनः ।
इयेष स शिरश्छेत्तुं खड्गेन कुपितो नलः ॥१६॥
16. śrutvā tu tasya tā vāco bahvabaddhapralāpinaḥ ,
iyeṣa sa śiraśchettuṁ khaḍgena kupito nalaḥ.
16. śrutvā tu tasya tāḥ vācaḥ bahvabaddhapralāpinaḥ
iyeṣa saḥ śiraḥ chettum khaḍgena kupitaḥ nalaḥ
16. But upon hearing those many senseless words of his, Nala, becoming enraged, wished to cut off his head with a sword.
स्मयंस्तु रोषताम्राक्षस्तमुवाच ततो नृपः ।
पणावः किं व्याहरसे जित्वा वै व्याहरिष्यसि ॥१७॥
17. smayaṁstu roṣatāmrākṣastamuvāca tato nṛpaḥ ,
paṇāvaḥ kiṁ vyāharase jitvā vai vyāhariṣyasi.
17. smayan tu roṣatāmrākṣaḥ tam uvāca tataḥ nṛpaḥ
paṇāvaḥ kim vyāharase jitvā vai vyāhariṣyasi
17. Then the king, smiling but with eyes red from anger, said to him: 'O gambler, why do you speak now? You shall speak only after you have truly won!'
ततः प्रावर्तत द्यूतं पुष्करस्य नलस्य च ।
एकपाणेन भद्रं ते नलेन स पराजितः ।
सरत्नकोशनिचयः प्राणेन पणितोऽपि च ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ prāvartata dyūtaṁ puṣkarasya nalasya ca ,
ekapāṇena bhadraṁ te nalena sa parājitaḥ ,
saratnakośanicayaḥ prāṇena paṇito'pi ca.
18. tataḥ prāvartata dyūtaṃ puṣkarasya
nalasya ca | ekapāṇena bhadraṃ
te nalena sa parājitaḥ |
saratnakośanicayaḥ prāṇena paṇitaḥ api ca
18. Then the gambling match between Puskara and Nala began. In a single decisive throw, Puskara was defeated by Nala; may good fortune be with you. He had wagered his collection of jewels, his treasury, and even his very life.
जित्वा च पुष्करं राजा प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ।
मम सर्वमिदं राज्यमव्यग्रं हतकण्टकम् ॥१९॥
19. jitvā ca puṣkaraṁ rājā prahasannidamabravīt ,
mama sarvamidaṁ rājyamavyagraṁ hatakaṇṭakam.
19. jitvā ca puṣkaraṃ rājā prahasan idam abravīt |
mama sarvam idam rājyam avyagraṃ hatakaṇṭakam
19. And having defeated Puskara, the king (Nala), laughing, said this: "All this kingdom of mine is now untroubled and free from enemies."
वैदर्भी न त्वया शक्या राजापसद वीक्षितुम् ।
तस्यास्त्वं सपरीवारो मूढ दासत्वमागतः ॥२०॥
20. vaidarbhī na tvayā śakyā rājāpasada vīkṣitum ,
tasyāstvaṁ saparīvāro mūḍha dāsatvamāgataḥ.
20. vaidarbhī na tvayā śakyā rājāpasada vīkṣitum |
tasyāḥ tvaṃ saparīvāraḥ mūḍha dāsatvam āgataḥ
20. O lowest of kings, you will not be able to see Vaidarbhi (Damayanti). O fool, you and your entire retinue have fallen into servitude to her.
न तत्त्वया कृतं कर्म येनाहं निर्जितः पुरा ।
कलिना तत्कृतं कर्म त्वं तु मूढ न बुध्यसे ।
नाहं परकृतं दोषं त्वय्याधास्ये कथंचन ॥२१॥
21. na tattvayā kṛtaṁ karma yenāhaṁ nirjitaḥ purā ,
kalinā tatkṛtaṁ karma tvaṁ tu mūḍha na budhyase ,
nāhaṁ parakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ tvayyādhāsye kathaṁcana.
21. na tat tvayā kṛtam karma yena aham
nirjitaḥ purā | kalinā tat kṛtam karma
tvaṃ tu mūḍha na budhyase | na aham
parakṛtam doṣaṃ tvayi ādhāsye kathaṃcana
21. It was not by your deed (karma) that I was formerly defeated. That deed (karma) was done by Kali, but you, O fool, do not understand it. I will certainly not impute another's fault upon you in any way.
यथासुखं त्वं जीवस्व प्राणानभ्युत्सृजामि ते ।
तथैव च मम प्रीतिस्त्वयि वीर न संशयः ॥२२॥
22. yathāsukhaṁ tvaṁ jīvasva prāṇānabhyutsṛjāmi te ,
tathaiva ca mama prītistvayi vīra na saṁśayaḥ.
22. yathāsukham tvam jīvasva prāṇān abhyutsṛjāmi te
tathā eva ca mama prītiḥ tvayi vīra na saṃśayaḥ
22. Live as you please; I entrust my very life to you. And indeed, my affection for you, O hero, is beyond any doubt.
सौभ्रात्रं चैव मे त्वत्तो न कदाचित्प्रहास्यति ।
पुष्कर त्वं हि मे भ्राता संजीवस्व शतं समाः ॥२३॥
23. saubhrātraṁ caiva me tvatto na kadācitprahāsyati ,
puṣkara tvaṁ hi me bhrātā saṁjīvasva śataṁ samāḥ.
23. saubhrātram ca eva me tvattaḥ na kadācit prahāsyati
puṣkara tvam hi me bhrātā saṃjīvasva śatam samāḥ
23. Indeed, my brotherly affection (saubhrātram) for you will never diminish. O Pushkara, you are truly my brother; live for a hundred years!
एवं नलः सान्त्वयित्वा भ्रातरं सत्यविक्रमः ।
स्वपुरं प्रेषयामास परिष्वज्य पुनः पुनः ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ nalaḥ sāntvayitvā bhrātaraṁ satyavikramaḥ ,
svapuraṁ preṣayāmāsa pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ.
24. evam nalaḥ sāntvayitvā bhrātaram satyavikramaḥ
svapuram preṣayāmāsa pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ
24. Thus, having consoled his brother, Nala, the truly valorous one (satyavikramaḥ), sent him to his own city, embracing him again and again.
सान्त्वितो नैषधेनैवं पुष्करः प्रत्युवाच तम् ।
पुण्यश्लोकं तदा राजन्नभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥२५॥
25. sāntvito naiṣadhenaivaṁ puṣkaraḥ pratyuvāca tam ,
puṇyaślokaṁ tadā rājannabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ.
25. sāntvitaḥ naiṣadhena evam puṣkaraḥ pratyuvāca
tam puṇyaślokam tadā rājan abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ
25. Having thus been consoled by Nala (Naiṣadhena), Pushkara then replied to him. O King, he spoke with folded hands (kṛtāñjaliḥ), bowing to the renowned one (puṇyaślokam).
कीर्तिरस्तु तवाक्षय्या जीव वर्षायुतं सुखी ।
यो मे वितरसि प्राणानधिष्ठानं च पार्थिव ॥२६॥
26. kīrtirastu tavākṣayyā jīva varṣāyutaṁ sukhī ,
yo me vitarasi prāṇānadhiṣṭhānaṁ ca pārthiva.
26. kīrtiḥ astu tava akṣayyā jīva varṣāyutaṃ sukhī
yaḥ me vitarasi prāṇān adhiṣṭhānaṃ ca pārthiva
26. Let your fame be imperishable. Live happily for ten thousand years, O King, you who bestow upon me my life and an abode.
स तथा सत्कृतो राज्ञा मासमुष्य तदा नृपः ।
प्रययौ स्वपुरं हृष्टः पुष्करः स्वजनावृतः ॥२७॥
27. sa tathā satkṛto rājñā māsamuṣya tadā nṛpaḥ ,
prayayau svapuraṁ hṛṣṭaḥ puṣkaraḥ svajanāvṛtaḥ.
27. saḥ tathā satkṛtaḥ rājñā māsam uṣya tadā nṛpaḥ
prayayau svapuram hṛṣṭaḥ puṣkaraḥ svajanāvṛtaḥ
27. Thus honored by the king, that king Puṣkara, having stayed for a month, then joyfully departed to his own city, surrounded by his own people.
महत्या सेनया राजन्विनीतैः परिचारकैः ।
भ्राजमान इवादित्यो वपुषा पुरुषर्षभ ॥२८॥
28. mahatyā senayā rājanvinītaiḥ paricārakaiḥ ,
bhrājamāna ivādityo vapuṣā puruṣarṣabha.
28. mahatyā senayā rājan vinītaiḥ paricārakaiḥ
bhrājamānaḥ iva ādityaḥ vapuṣā puruṣarṣabha
28. O King, O best among men, (he departed) with a great army and disciplined attendants, shining like the sun with his physical form.
प्रस्थाप्य पुष्करं राजा वित्तवन्तमनामयम् ।
प्रविवेश पुरं श्रीमानत्यर्थमुपशोभितम् ।
प्रविश्य सान्त्वयामास पौरांश्च निषधाधिपः ॥२९॥
29. prasthāpya puṣkaraṁ rājā vittavantamanāmayam ,
praviveśa puraṁ śrīmānatyarthamupaśobhitam ,
praviśya sāntvayāmāsa paurāṁśca niṣadhādhipaḥ.
29. prasthāpya puṣkaram rājā vittavantam
anāmayam praviveśa puram śrīmān
atyartham upaśobhitam praviśya
sāntvayāmāsa paurān ca niṣadhādhipaḥ
29. Having sent off Puṣkara, who was wealthy and healthy, the glorious King (Nala) entered his exceedingly adorned city. Having entered, the lord of Niṣadha also consoled the citizens.
