वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रविशन्नर्जुनो राजन्नाश्रमं सत्यवादिनः ।
ददर्शासीनमेकान्ते मुनिं सत्यवतीसुतम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
praviśannarjuno rājannāśramaṁ satyavādinaḥ ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, as Arjuna entered the hermitage of the truth-speaker, he saw the sage, son of Satyavatī, seated in a secluded spot.
स तमासाद्य धर्मज्ञमुपतस्थे महाव्रतम् ।
अर्जुनोऽस्मीति नामास्मै निवेद्याभ्यवदत्ततः ॥२॥
2. sa tamāsādya dharmajñamupatasthe mahāvratam ,
arjuno'smīti nāmāsmai nivedyābhyavadattataḥ.
2. sa tam āsādya dharmajñam upatasthe mahāvratam
arjunaḥ asmi iti nāma asmai nivedya abhyavadat tataḥ

2. Having approached that great ascetic, the knower of natural law (dharma), Arjuna announced his name, saying "I am Arjuna," and then spoke to him.
स्वागतं तेऽस्त्विति प्राह मुनिः सत्यवतीसुतः ।
आस्यतामिति चोवाच प्रसन्नात्मा महामुनिः ॥३॥
3. svāgataṁ te'stviti prāha muniḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ,
āsyatāmiti covāca prasannātmā mahāmuniḥ.
3. svāgatam te astu iti prāha muniḥ satyavatīsutaḥ
āsyatām iti ca uvāca prasannātmā mahāmuniḥ
3. satyavatīsutaḥ muniḥ prasannātmā mahāmuniḥ te

3. The sage, son of Satyavatī, with a serene mind, said, "Welcome to you," and also, "Please be seated."
तमप्रतीतमनसं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ।
निर्विण्णमनसं दृष्ट्वा पार्थं व्यासोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥४॥
4. tamapratītamanasaṁ niḥśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
nirviṇṇamanasaṁ dṛṣṭvā pārthaṁ vyāso'bravīdidam.
4. tam apratītamanasam niḥśvasantam punaḥ punaḥ
nirviṇṇamanasam dṛṣṭvā pārtham vyāsaḥ abravīt idam
4. vyāsaḥ tam apratītamanasam nirviṇṇamanasam punaḥ
punaḥ niḥśvasantam pārtham dṛṣṭvā idam abravīt
4. Seeing Pārtha, distressed and dejected in mind, and sighing repeatedly, Vyāsa spoke these words.
अवीरजोऽभिघातस्ते ब्राह्मणो वा हतस्त्वया ।
युद्धे पराजितो वासि गतश्रीरिव लक्ष्यसे ॥५॥
5. avīrajo'bhighātaste brāhmaṇo vā hatastvayā ,
yuddhe parājito vāsi gataśrīriva lakṣyase.
5. avīrajaḥ abhighātaḥ te brāhmaṇaḥ vā hataḥ tvayā
yuddhe parājitaḥ vā asi gataśrīḥ iva lakṣyase
5. te abhighātaḥ avīrajaḥ vā tvayā brāhmaṇaḥ hataḥ
vā yuddhe parājitaḥ asi vā gataśrīḥ iva lakṣyase
5. Has your vigor been diminished, or have you killed a brahmin, or have you been defeated in battle? You appear as if your glory has departed.
न त्वा प्रत्यभिजानामि किमिदं भरतर्षभ ।
श्रोतव्यं चेन्मया पार्थ क्षिप्रमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. na tvā pratyabhijānāmi kimidaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
śrotavyaṁ cenmayā pārtha kṣipramākhyātumarhasi.
6. na tvā pratyabhijānāmi kim idam bharatarṣabha
śrotavyam cet mayā pārtha kṣipram ākhyātum arhasi
6. bharatarṣabha na tvā pratyabhijānāmi idam kim
pārtha mayā śrotavyam cet kṣipram ākhyātum arhasi
6. O best of the Bhāratas, I do not recognize you. What is this (state of affairs)? O Pārtha, if it is to be heard by me, you ought to tell it quickly.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
यः स मेघवपुः श्रीमान्बृहत्पङ्कजलोचनः ।
स कृष्णः सह रामेण त्यक्त्वा देहं दिवं गतः ॥७॥
7. arjuna uvāca ,
yaḥ sa meghavapuḥ śrīmānbṛhatpaṅkajalocanaḥ ,
sa kṛṣṇaḥ saha rāmeṇa tyaktvā dehaṁ divaṁ gataḥ.
7. arjunaḥ uvāca yaḥ saḥ meghavapuḥ śrīmān bṛhatpaṅkajalocanaḥ
saḥ kṛṣṇaḥ saha rāmeṇa tyaktvā deham divam gataḥ
7. arjunaḥ uvāca yaḥ saḥ meghavapuḥ śrīmān bṛhatpaṅkajalocanaḥ
saḥ kṛṣṇaḥ rāmeṇa saha deham tyaktvā divam gataḥ
7. Arjuna said: That glorious one, whose form was like a cloud and whose eyes were like large lotuses - that (kṛṣṇa) has gone to heaven, having given up his body along with (rāma).
मौसले वृष्णिवीराणां विनाशो ब्रह्मशापजः ।
बभूव वीरान्तकरः प्रभासे रोमहर्षणः ॥८॥
8. mausale vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ vināśo brahmaśāpajaḥ ,
babhūva vīrāntakaraḥ prabhāse romaharṣaṇaḥ.

8. mausale प्रभासे वृष्णिवीराणाम् ब्रह्मशापजः

8. The destruction of the Vṛṣṇi heroes, caused by a brahmin's curse, took place in Prabhāsa during the Mauṣala event, a horrifying and hero-ending occurrence.
ये ते शूरा महात्मानः सिंहदर्पा महाबलाः ।
भोजवृष्ण्यन्धका ब्रह्मन्नन्योन्यं तैर्हतं युधि ॥९॥
9. ye te śūrā mahātmānaḥ siṁhadarpā mahābalāḥ ,
bhojavṛṣṇyandhakā brahmannanyonyaṁ tairhataṁ yudhi.
9. ye te śūrāḥ mahātmānaḥ siṃhadarpāḥ mahābalāḥ
bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ brahman anyonyam taiḥ hatam yudhi
9. brahman,
ye te śūrāḥ mahātmānaḥ siṃhadarpāḥ mahābalāḥ bhojavṛṣṇyandhakāḥ taiḥ anyonyam yudhi hatam
9. O brahmin (brahman)! Those valiant, great-souled heroes, mighty as lions, the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, were slain by each other in battle.
गदापरिघशक्तीनां सहाः परिघबाहवः ।
त एरकाभिर्निहताः पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१०॥
10. gadāparighaśaktīnāṁ sahāḥ parighabāhavaḥ ,
ta erakābhirnihatāḥ paśya kālasya paryayam.
10. gadāparighaśaktīnām sahāḥ parighabāhavaḥ te
erakābhiḥ nihatāḥ paśya kālasya paryayam
10. te gadāparighaśaktīnām sahāḥ parighabāhavaḥ erakābhiḥ nihatāḥ.
kālasya paryayam paśya
10. Those whose arms were strong like iron maces, capable of bearing maces, iron bars, and spears, were destroyed by blades of grass. Behold the reversal of time (kāla)!
हतं पञ्चशतं तेषां सहस्रं बाहुशालिनाम् ।
निधनं समनुप्राप्तं समासाद्येतरेतरम् ॥११॥
11. hataṁ pañcaśataṁ teṣāṁ sahasraṁ bāhuśālinām ,
nidhanaṁ samanuprāptaṁ samāsādyetaretaram.
11. hatam pañcaśatam teṣām sahasram bāhuśālinām
nidhanam samanuprāptam samāsādya itaretaram
11. teṣām pañcaśatam hatam.
bāhuśālinām sahasram itaretaram samāsādya nidhanam samanuprāptam
11. Five hundred of them were slain, a thousand of the powerful-armed ones met destruction, having attacked each other.
पुनः पुनर्न मृष्यामि विनाशममितौजसाम् ।
चिन्तयानो यदूनां च कृष्णस्य च यशस्विनः ॥१२॥
12. punaḥ punarna mṛṣyāmi vināśamamitaujasām ,
cintayāno yadūnāṁ ca kṛṣṇasya ca yaśasvinaḥ.
12. punaḥ punaḥ na mṛṣyāmi vināśam amitojasām
cintayānaḥ yadūnām ca kṛṣṇasya ca yaśasvinaḥ
12. punaḥ punaḥ amitojasām vināśam na mṛṣyāmi.
yadūnām ca yaśasvinaḥ kṛṣṇasya ca cintayānaḥ
12. Again and again, I cannot bear the destruction of those with immeasurable prowess. I meditate on the Yadus and the glorious Kṛṣṇa.
शोषणं सागरस्येव पर्वतस्येव चालनम् ।
नभसः पतनं चैव शैत्यमग्नेस्तथैव च ॥१३॥
13. śoṣaṇaṁ sāgarasyeva parvatasyeva cālanam ,
nabhasaḥ patanaṁ caiva śaityamagnestathaiva ca.
13. śoṣaṇam sāgarasya iva parvatasya iva cālanam
nabhasaḥ patanam ca eva śaityam agneḥ tathā eva ca
13. sāgarasya śoṣaṇam iva,
parvatasya cālanam iva,
nabhasaḥ patanam ca eva,
tathā eva agneḥ śaityam ca
13. It is like the drying up of the ocean, the moving of a mountain, the falling of the sky, and similarly, the coldness of fire.
अश्रद्धेयमहं मन्ये विनाशं शार्ङ्गधन्वनः ।
न चेह स्थातुमिच्छामि लोके कृष्णविनाकृतः ॥१४॥
14. aśraddheyamahaṁ manye vināśaṁ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ ,
na ceha sthātumicchāmi loke kṛṣṇavinākṛtaḥ.
14. aśraddheyam aham manye vināśam śārṅgadhanvanaḥ
na ca iha sthātum icchāmi loke kṛṣṇa-vinākṛtaḥ
14. aham śārṅgadhanvanaḥ vināśam aśraddheyam manye.
ca iha kṛṣṇa-vinākṛtaḥ loke sthātum na icchāmi.
14. I consider the demise of the wielder of the Śārṅga bow to be unbelievable. Nor do I wish to remain in this world, bereft of Kṛṣṇa.
इतः कष्टतरं चान्यच्छृणु तद्वै तपोधन ।
मनो मे दीर्यते येन चिन्तयानस्य वै मुहुः ॥१५॥
15. itaḥ kaṣṭataraṁ cānyacchṛṇu tadvai tapodhana ,
mano me dīryate yena cintayānasya vai muhuḥ.
15. itaḥ kaṣṭataram ca anyat śṛṇu tat vai tapodhana
manaḥ me dīryate yena cintayānasya vai muhuḥ
15. he tapodhana,
itaḥ kaṣṭataram ca anyat tat vai śṛṇu,
yena cintayānasya me manaḥ muhuḥ vai dīryate.
15. O ascetic (tapodhana), listen indeed to something else even more grievous than this, by which my mind is repeatedly torn apart as I reflect.
पश्यतो वृष्णिदाराश्च मम ब्रह्मन्सहस्रशः ।
आभीरैरनुसृत्याजौ हृताः पञ्चनदालयैः ॥१६॥
16. paśyato vṛṣṇidārāśca mama brahmansahasraśaḥ ,
ābhīrairanusṛtyājau hṛtāḥ pañcanadālayaiḥ.
16. paśyataḥ vṛṣṇidārāḥ ca mama brahman sahasraśaḥ
ābhīraiḥ anusṛtya ājau hṛtāḥ pañcanadālayaiḥ
16. he brahman,
paśyataḥ mama vṛṣṇidārāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ,
pañcanadālayaiḥ ābhīraiḥ ājau anusṛtya hṛtāḥ.
16. O Brahmin, while I watched, thousands of my Vṛṣṇi women were carried away by the Abhīras, the dwellers of Pañcanada, who pursued them in battle.
धनुरादाय तत्राहं नाशकं तस्य पूरणे ।
यथा पुरा च मे वीर्यं भुजयोर्न तथाभवत् ॥१७॥
17. dhanurādāya tatrāhaṁ nāśakaṁ tasya pūraṇe ,
yathā purā ca me vīryaṁ bhujayorna tathābhavat.
17. dhanuḥ ādāya tatra ahaṃ na aśakaṃ tasya pūraṇe
yathā purā ca me vīryaṃ bhujayoḥ na tathā abhavat
17. ahaṃ tatra dhanuḥ ādāya tasya pūraṇe na aśakaṃ ca
purā yathā me bhujayoḥ vīryaṃ na tathā abhavat
17. When I took up the bow there, I was unable to string it. My strength in my arms was no longer what it used to be.
अस्त्राणि मे प्रनष्टानि विविधानि महामुने ।
शराश्च क्षयमापन्नाः क्षणेनैव समन्ततः ॥१८॥
18. astrāṇi me pranaṣṭāni vividhāni mahāmune ,
śarāśca kṣayamāpannāḥ kṣaṇenaiva samantataḥ.
18. astrāṇi me pranaṣṭāni vividhāni mahāmune
śarāḥ ca kṣayaṃ āpannāḥ kṣaṇena eva samantataḥ
18. mahāmune me vividhāni astrāṇi pranaṣṭāni ca
śarāḥ kṣaṇena eva samantataḥ kṣayaṃ āpannāḥ
18. O great sage (muni), my various weapons were lost, and the arrows were completely exhausted in an instant from all sides.
पुरुषश्चाप्रमेयात्मा शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ।
चतुर्भुजः पीतवासा श्यामः पद्मायतेक्षणः ॥१९॥
19. puruṣaścāprameyātmā śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ ,
caturbhujaḥ pītavāsā śyāmaḥ padmāyatekṣaṇaḥ.
19. puruṣaḥ ca aprameyātmā śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ
caturbhujaḥ pītavāsāḥ śyāmaḥ padmāyatekṣaṇaḥ
19. ca puruṣaḥ aprameyātmā śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ
caturbhujaḥ pītavāsāḥ śyāmaḥ padmāyatekṣaṇaḥ
19. And the supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), whose true nature (ātman) is immeasurable, bears the conch, discus, and mace. He is four-armed, dressed in yellow garments, dark-complexioned, and has eyes like elongated lotus petals.
यः स याति पुरस्तान्मे रथस्य सुमहाद्युतिः ।
प्रदहन्रिपुसैन्यानि न पश्याम्यहमद्य तम् ॥२०॥
20. yaḥ sa yāti purastānme rathasya sumahādyutiḥ ,
pradahanripusainyāni na paśyāmyahamadya tam.
20. yaḥ saḥ yāti purastāt me rathasya sumahādyutiḥ
pradahan ripusainyāni na paśyāmi ahaṃ adya tam
20. ahaṃ adya tam na paśyāmi yaḥ saḥ sumahādyutiḥ
me rathasya purastāt ripusainyāni pradahan yāti
20. I do not see him today, the one of immense splendor who used to go before my chariot, incinerating enemy armies.
येन पूर्वं प्रदग्धानि शत्रुसैन्यानि तेजसा ।
शरैर्गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैरहं पश्चाद्व्यनाशयम् ॥२१॥
21. yena pūrvaṁ pradagdhāni śatrusainyāni tejasā ,
śarairgāṇḍīvanirmuktairahaṁ paścādvyanāśayam.
21. yena pūrvam pradagdhāni śatrusainyāni tejasā
śaraiḥ gāṇḍīvanirmuktaiḥ aham paścāt vyanaśayam
21. yena tejasā pūrvam śatrusainyāni pradagdhāni
aham paścāt gāṇḍīvanirmuktaiḥ śaraiḥ vyanaśayam
21. By whose (Krishna's) prowess the enemy armies were previously incinerated, I subsequently annihilated them with arrows shot from the Gāṇḍīva bow.
तमपश्यन्विषीदामि घूर्णामीव च सत्तम ।
परिनिर्विण्णचेताश्च शान्तिं नोपलभेऽपि च ॥२२॥
22. tamapaśyanviṣīdāmi ghūrṇāmīva ca sattama ,
parinirviṇṇacetāśca śāntiṁ nopalabhe'pi ca.
22. tam apaśyan viṣīdāmi ghūrṇām iva ca sattama
parinirviṇṇacetāḥ ca śāntim na upalabhe api ca
22. sattama tam apaśyan aham viṣīdāmi ca iva ghūrṇām
parinirviṇṇacetāḥ ca śāntim api na upalabhe
22. Not seeing him (Krishna), O best among the virtuous, I grieve and feel as though I am reeling. With a completely dejected mind, I also find no peace (śānti).
विना जनार्दनं वीरं नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।
श्रुत्वैव हि गतं विष्णुं ममापि मुमुहुर्दिशः ॥२३॥
23. vinā janārdanaṁ vīraṁ nāhaṁ jīvitumutsahe ,
śrutvaiva hi gataṁ viṣṇuṁ mamāpi mumuhurdiśaḥ.
23. vinā janārdanam vīram na aham jīvitum utsahe
śrutvā eva hi gatam viṣṇum mama api mumuhuḥ diśaḥ
23. aham vīram janārdanam vinā jīvitum na utsahe hi
eva gatam viṣṇum śrutvā mama api diśaḥ mumuhuḥ
23. Without the heroic Janārdana, I am unable to live. For, merely hearing that Viṣṇu (viṣṇu) has departed, even the directions became bewildered for me.
प्रनष्टज्ञातिवीर्यस्य शून्यस्य परिधावतः ।
उपदेष्टुं मम श्रेयो भवानर्हति सत्तम ॥२४॥
24. pranaṣṭajñātivīryasya śūnyasya paridhāvataḥ ,
upadeṣṭuṁ mama śreyo bhavānarhati sattama.
24. pranaṣṭajñātivīryasya śūnyasya paridhāvataḥ
upadeṣṭum mama śreyaḥ bhavān arhati sattama
24. sattama bhavān pranaṣṭajñātivīryasya śūnyasya
paridhāvataḥ mama śreyaḥ upadeṣṭum arhati
24. For me, who has lost all relatives and valor, who feels empty and wanders aimlessly, you, O best among the virtuous, should instruct me on what is truly beneficial.
व्यास उवाच ।
ब्रह्मशापविनिर्दग्धा वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः ।
विनष्टाः कुरुशार्दूल न ताञ्शोचितुमर्हसि ॥२५॥
25. vyāsa uvāca ,
brahmaśāpavinirdagdhā vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ ,
vinaṣṭāḥ kuruśārdūla na tāñśocitumarhasi.
25. vyāsa uvāca brahmaśāpavinirdagdhāḥ vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ
vinaṣṭāḥ kuruśārdūla na tān śocitum arhasi
25. kuruśārdūla brahmaśāpavinirdagdhāḥ
vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ vinaṣṭāḥ tān śocitum na arhasi
25. Vyāsa said: "O tiger among the Kurus, the great charioteers of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas have perished, burnt by a brahmin's curse. You should not grieve for them."
भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि दिष्टमेतन्महात्मनाम् ।
उपेक्षितं च कृष्णेन शक्तेनापि व्यपोहितुम् ॥२६॥
26. bhavitavyaṁ tathā taddhi diṣṭametanmahātmanām ,
upekṣitaṁ ca kṛṣṇena śaktenāpi vyapohitum.
26. bhavitavyam tathā tat hi diṣṭam etat mahātmanām
upekṣitam ca kṛṣṇena śaktena api vyapohitum
26. tat hi tathā bhavitavyam etat mahātmanām diṣṭam
ca kṛṣṇena śaktena api vyapohitum upekṣitam
26. Indeed, that was destined to happen; it was fate for these great souls (mahātman). Kṛṣṇa, though capable of averting it, chose to overlook it.
त्रैलोक्यमपि कृष्णो हि कृत्स्नं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
प्रसहेदन्यथा कर्तुं किमु शापं मनीषिणाम् ॥२७॥
27. trailokyamapi kṛṣṇo hi kṛtsnaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam ,
prasahedanyathā kartuṁ kimu śāpaṁ manīṣiṇām.
27. trailokyam api kṛṣṇaḥ hi kṛtsnam sthāvarajaṅgamam
prasahet anyathā kartum kimu śāpam manīṣiṇām
27. kṛṣṇaḥ hi trailokyam api kṛtsnam sthāvarajaṅgamam
anyathā kartum prasahet kimu manīṣiṇām śāpam
27. Indeed, Kṛṣṇa could have transformed the entire three worlds, including all movable and immovable beings. What then to say of the curse of the wise ones?
रथस्य पुरतो याति यः स चक्रगदाधरः ।
तव स्नेहात्पुराणर्षिर्वासुदेवश्चतुर्भुजः ॥२८॥
28. rathasya purato yāti yaḥ sa cakragadādharaḥ ,
tava snehātpurāṇarṣirvāsudevaścaturbhujaḥ.
28. rathasya purataḥ yāti yaḥ saḥ cakragadādharaḥ
tava snehāt purāṇarṣiḥ vāsudevaḥ caturbhujaḥ
28. yaḥ saḥ rathasya purataḥ yāti (saḥ) tava snehāt
cakragadādharaḥ purāṇarṣiḥ vāsudevaḥ caturbhujaḥ
28. He who goes in front of your chariot, out of affection for you, is that Vāsudeva, the wielder of the discus and mace, the ancient sage, the four-armed one.
कृत्वा भारावतरणं पृथिव्याः पृथुलोचनः ।
मोक्षयित्वा जगत्सर्वं गतः स्वस्थानमुत्तमम् ॥२९॥
29. kṛtvā bhārāvataraṇaṁ pṛthivyāḥ pṛthulocanaḥ ,
mokṣayitvā jagatsarvaṁ gataḥ svasthānamuttamam.
29. kṛtvā bhārāvataraṇam pṛthivyāḥ pṛthulocanaḥ
mokṣayitvā jagat sarvam gataḥ svasthānam uttamam
29. pṛthulocanaḥ pṛthivyāḥ bhārāvataraṇam kṛtvā
sarvam jagat mokṣayitvā uttamam svasthānam gataḥ
29. The wide-eyed one (Kṛṣṇa), having relieved the earth of its burden and liberated the entire world, returned to his supreme abode.
त्वया त्विह महत्कर्म देवानां पुरुषर्षभ ।
कृतं भीमसहायेन यमाभ्यां च महाभुज ॥३०॥
30. tvayā tviha mahatkarma devānāṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
kṛtaṁ bhīmasahāyena yamābhyāṁ ca mahābhuja.
30. tvayā tu iha mahat karma devānām puruṣarṣabha
kṛtam bhīmasahāyena yamābhyām ca mahābhuja
30. puruṣarṣabha mahābhuja iha devānām mahat karma
bhīmasahāyena yamābhyām ca tvayā tu kṛtam
30. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), O mighty-armed one (mahābhuja), a great task (karma) for the gods has indeed been accomplished by you here, with the assistance of Bhīma and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva).
कृतकृत्यांश्च वो मन्ये संसिद्धान्कुरुपुंगव ।
गमनं प्राप्तकालं च तद्धि श्रेयो मतं मम ॥३१॥
31. kṛtakṛtyāṁśca vo manye saṁsiddhānkurupuṁgava ,
gamanaṁ prāptakālaṁ ca taddhi śreyo mataṁ mama.
31. kṛtakṛtyān ca vaḥ manye saṃsiddhān kurupuṃgava
gamanam prāptakālam ca tat hi śreyaḥ matam mama
31. kurupuṃgava vaḥ kṛtakṛtyān saṃsiddhān ca manye
tat hi prāptakālam gamanam ca mama matam śreyaḥ
31. O best of the Kurus (kurupuṃgava), I consider you to have accomplished your purpose and to be perfected. Indeed, a timely departure is deemed by me to be the most beneficial.
बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च प्रतिपत्तिश्च भारत ।
भवन्ति भवकालेषु विपद्यन्ते विपर्यये ॥३२॥
32. balaṁ buddhiśca tejaśca pratipattiśca bhārata ,
bhavanti bhavakāleṣu vipadyante viparyaye.
32. balam buddhiḥ ca tejaḥ ca pratipattiḥ ca bhārata
bhavanti bhavakāleṣu vipadyante viparyaye
32. bhārata balam ca buddhiḥ ca tejaḥ ca pratipattiḥ
ca bhavakāleṣu bhavanti viparyaye vipadyante
32. O Bhārata, strength, intelligence, vitality, and discernment flourish in prosperous times, but they diminish in adversity.
कालमूलमिदं सर्वं जगद्बीजं धनंजय ।
काल एव समादत्ते पुनरेव यदृच्छया ॥३३॥
33. kālamūlamidaṁ sarvaṁ jagadbījaṁ dhanaṁjaya ,
kāla eva samādatte punareva yadṛcchayā.
33. kālamūlam idam sarvam jagatbījam dhanaṃjaya
kālaḥ eva samādatte punaḥ eva yadṛcchayā
33. dhanaṃjaya idam sarvam kālamūlam jagatbījam
kālaḥ eva yadṛcchayā punaḥ eva samādatte
33. O Dhananjaya, this entire creation, whose origin and seed is time, time itself reabsorbs again according to its own will.
स एव बलवान्भूत्वा पुनर्भवति दुर्बलः ।
स एवेशश्च भूत्वेह परैराज्ञाप्यते पुनः ॥३४॥
34. sa eva balavānbhūtvā punarbhavati durbalaḥ ,
sa eveśaśca bhūtveha parairājñāpyate punaḥ.
34. saḥ eva balavān bhūtvā punaḥ bhavati durbalaḥ
saḥ eva īśaḥ ca bhūtvā iha paraiḥ ājñāpyate punaḥ
34. saḥ eva balavān bhūtvā punaḥ durbalaḥ bhavati
saḥ eva īśaḥ ca iha bhūtvā punaḥ paraiḥ ājñāpyate
34. He alone, having become strong, again becomes weak. He alone, having become a lord here, is again commanded by others.
कृतकृत्यानि चास्त्राणि गतान्यद्य यथागतम् ।
पुनरेष्यन्ति ते हस्तं यदा कालो भविष्यति ॥३५॥
35. kṛtakṛtyāni cāstrāṇi gatānyadya yathāgatam ,
punareṣyanti te hastaṁ yadā kālo bhaviṣyati.
35. kṛtakṛtyāni ca astrāṇi gatāni adya yathāgatam
punaḥ eṣyanti te hastam yadā kālaḥ bhaviṣyati
35. ca astrāṇi kṛtakṛtyāni adya yathāgatam gatāni
yadā kālaḥ bhaviṣyati punaḥ te hastam eṣyanti
35. And the weapons, having fulfilled their purpose, have now departed as they came. They will return to your hand again when the time comes.
कालो गन्तुं गतिं मुख्यां भवतामपि भारत ।
एतच्छ्रेयो हि वो मन्ये परमं भरतर्षभ ॥३६॥
36. kālo gantuṁ gatiṁ mukhyāṁ bhavatāmapi bhārata ,
etacchreyo hi vo manye paramaṁ bharatarṣabha.
36. kālaḥ gantum gatim mukhyām bhavatām api bhārata
etat śreyaḥ hi vaḥ manye paramam bharatarṣabha
36. bhārata bhavatām api mukhyām gatim gantum kālaḥ
(ayam) bharatarṣabha hi etat paramam śreyaḥ vaḥ manye
36. O Bharata, it is time for you all to proceed towards the highest state. Indeed, O best of the Bharatas, I consider this to be the supreme welfare for you.
एतद्वचनमाज्ञाय व्यासस्यामिततेजसः ।
अनुज्ञातो ययौ पार्थो नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥३७॥
37. etadvacanamājñāya vyāsasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
anujñāto yayau pārtho nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam.
37. etat vacanam ājñāya vyāsasya amitatejasaḥ
anujñātaḥ yayau pārthaḥ nagaram nāgasāhvayam
37. amitatejasaḥ vyāsasya etat vacanam ājñāya,
pārthaḥ anujñātaḥ nāgasāhvayam nagaram yayau
37. Having received this instruction from Vyāsa, who possessed immeasurable spiritual power, Arjuna (Pārtha) then proceeded to the city known as Nāgasāhvaya (Hastinapura) after obtaining his permission.
प्रविश्य च पुरीं वीरः समासाद्य युधिष्ठिरम् ।
आचष्ट तद्यथावृत्तं वृष्ण्यन्धकजनं प्रति ॥३८॥
38. praviśya ca purīṁ vīraḥ samāsādya yudhiṣṭhiram ,
ācaṣṭa tadyathāvṛttaṁ vṛṣṇyandhakajanaṁ prati.
38. praviśya ca purīm vīraḥ samāsādya yudhiṣṭhiram
ācaṣṭa tat yathāvṛttam vṛṣṇyandhakajanam prati
38. ca vīraḥ purīm praviśya,
yudhiṣṭhiram samāsādya,
vṛṣṇyandhakajanam prati tat yathāvṛttam ācaṣṭa
38. And having entered the city, the hero (Arjuna), after meeting Yudhiṣṭhira, narrated all that had transpired concerning the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans.
