The princess Damayantī, thus addressed by that caravan, then replied. The chaste woman, distressed by her husband's misfortune, spoke to the caravan leader, the caravan, and all the people who were there.

You, whether young, old, or children, and you, the leaders of this caravan, understand me to be a human woman, the daughter of a king (manujādhipati), the daughter-in-law of a king, a queen, and one who longs to see her husband.

The leader of the great caravan, the caravan master named Śuci, said to that faultless-limbed woman, "O blessed one, listen to my words."

In this difficult forest, inhabited by non-humans, I see elephants, panthers, buffaloes, tigers, bears, and other wild animals. May Maṇibhadra, the king of Yakṣas, be gracious to us today.
