बृहदश्व उवाच ।
सा निहत्य मृगव्याधं प्रतस्थे कमलेक्षणा ।
वनं प्रतिभयं शून्यं झिल्लिकागणनादितम् ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
sā nihatya mṛgavyādhaṁ pratasthe kamalekṣaṇā ,
vanaṁ pratibhayaṁ śūnyaṁ jhillikāgaṇanāditam.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: The lotus-eyed one, having killed the hunter, set out for the desolate and very dreadful forest, which resounded with the chirping of countless crickets.
सिंहव्याघ्रवराहर्क्षरुरुद्वीपिनिषेवितम् ।
नानापक्षिगणाकीर्णं म्लेच्छतस्करसेवितम् ॥२॥
2. siṁhavyāghravarāharkṣarurudvīpiniṣevitam ,
nānāpakṣigaṇākīrṇaṁ mlecchataskarasevitam.

2. The forest was frequented by lions, tigers, boars, bears, ruru deer, and leopards; teeming with diverse flocks of birds; and inhabited by outcasts and robbers.
शालवेणुधवाश्वत्थतिन्दुकेङ्गुदकिंशुकैः ।
अर्जुनारिष्टसंछन्नं चन्दनैश्च सशाल्मलैः ॥३॥
3. śālaveṇudhavāśvatthatindukeṅgudakiṁśukaiḥ ,
arjunāriṣṭasaṁchannaṁ candanaiśca saśālmalaiḥ.

3. The forest was dense with śāla, bamboo, dhava, aśvattha, tinduka, iṅguda, and kiṃśuka trees; heavily shaded by arjuna and ariṣṭa trees; and interspersed with sandalwood and śālmali trees.
जम्ब्वाम्रलोध्रखदिरशाकवेत्रसमाकुलम् ।
काश्मर्यामलकप्लक्षकदम्बोदुम्बरावृतम् ॥४॥
4. jambvāmralodhrakhadiraśākavetrasamākulam ,
kāśmaryāmalakaplakṣakadambodumbarāvṛtam.

4. The forest was densely packed with jambu, mango, lodhra, khadira, śāka, and vetra trees; and enveloped by kāśmarī, āmalaka, plakṣa, kadamba, and udumbara trees.
बदरीबिल्वसंछन्नं न्यग्रोधैश्च समाकुलम् ।
प्रियालतालखर्जूरहरीतकबिभीतकैः ॥५॥
5. badarībilvasaṁchannaṁ nyagrodhaiśca samākulam ,
priyālatālakharjūraharītakabibhītakaiḥ.

5. It was thickly covered with jujube and bael trees, densely filled with banyan trees, and abundant with priyāla, palmyra, date, chebulic myrobalan, and beleric myrobalan trees.
नानाधातुशतैर्नद्धान्विविधानपि चाचलान् ।
निकुञ्जान्पक्षिसंघुष्टान्दरीश्चाद्भुतदर्शनाः ।
नदीः सरांसि वापीश्च विविधांश्च मृगद्विजान् ॥६॥
6. nānādhātuśatairnaddhānvividhānapi cācalān ,
nikuñjānpakṣisaṁghuṣṭāndarīścādbhutadarśanāḥ ,
nadīḥ sarāṁsi vāpīśca vividhāṁśca mṛgadvijān.
6. nānādhātuśataiḥ naddhān vividhān api
ca acalān nikuñjān pakṣisaṃghuṣṭān
darīḥ ca adbhutadarśanāḥ nadīḥ
sarāṃsi vāpīḥ ca vividhān ca mṛgadvijān
6. She saw various mountains, many of which were adorned with hundreds of different minerals, as well as groves resounding with birds, and caves of astonishing appearance; also rivers, lakes, stepwells, and various animals and birds.
सा बहून्भीमरूपांश्च पिशाचोरगराक्षसान् ।
पल्वलानि तडागानि गिरिकूटानि सर्वशः ।
सरितः सागरांश्चैव ददर्शाद्भुतदर्शनान् ॥७॥
7. sā bahūnbhīmarūpāṁśca piśācoragarākṣasān ,
palvalāni taḍāgāni girikūṭāni sarvaśaḥ ,
saritaḥ sāgarāṁścaiva dadarśādbhutadarśanān.

piśācoragarākṣasān palvalāni taḍāgāni
girikūṭāni sarvaśaḥ saritaḥ sāgarān
ca eva dadarśa adbhutadarśanān
7. She (Damayantī) saw many terrifying-looking fiends, serpents, and rākṣasas (demons). Everywhere she also saw pools, ponds, mountain peaks, rivers, and oceans of astonishing appearance.
यूथशो ददृशे चात्र विदर्भाधिपनन्दिनी ।
महिषान्वराहान्गोमायूनृक्षवानरपन्नगान् ॥८॥
8. yūthaśo dadṛśe cātra vidarbhādhipanandinī ,
mahiṣānvarāhāngomāyūnṛkṣavānarapannagān.
8. yūthaśaḥ dadṛśe ca atra vidarbhādhipanandinī
mahiṣān varāhān gomāyūn ṛkṣavānarapannagān
8. And here, Damayantī, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha, saw in groups buffaloes, boars, jackals, bears, monkeys, and serpents.
तेजसा यशसा स्थित्या श्रिया च परया युता ।
वैदर्भी विचरत्येका नलमन्वेषती तदा ॥९॥
9. tejasā yaśasā sthityā śriyā ca parayā yutā ,
vaidarbhī vicaratyekā nalamanveṣatī tadā.
9. tejasā yaśasā sthityā śriyā ca parayā yutā
vaidarbhī vicarati ekā nalam anveṣatī tadā
9. Endowed with splendor, fame, dignity, and supreme beauty, the princess of Vidarbha, Damayantī, then wanders alone, searching for Nala.
नाबिभ्यत्सा नृपसुता भैमी तत्राथ कस्यचित् ।
दारुणामटवीं प्राप्य भर्तृव्यसनकर्शिता ॥१०॥
10. nābibhyatsā nṛpasutā bhaimī tatrātha kasyacit ,
dāruṇāmaṭavīṁ prāpya bhartṛvyasanakarśitā.
10. na abibhyat sā nṛpasutā bhaimī tatra atha kasyacit
dāruṇām aṭavīm prāpya bhartṛvyasanakarśitā
10. That royal daughter, Bhaimī (Damayantī), did not fear anyone there then, even after reaching the dreadful forest, as she was wasted away by the sorrow of her husband's separation.
विदर्भतनया राजन्विललाप सुदुःखिता ।
भर्तृशोकपरीताङ्गी शिलातलसमाश्रिता ॥११॥
11. vidarbhatanayā rājanvilalāpa suduḥkhitā ,
bhartṛśokaparītāṅgī śilātalasamāśritā.

bhartṛśokaparītāṅgī śilātalasamāśritā
11. O King, the daughter of Vidarbha, exceedingly distressed, lamented, her body overcome by grief for her husband, as she rested upon a rock surface.
दमयन्त्युवाच ।
सिंहोरस्क महाबाहो निषधानां जनाधिप ।
क्व नु राजन्गतोऽसीह त्यक्त्वा मां निर्जने वने ॥१२॥
12. damayantyuvāca ,
siṁhoraska mahābāho niṣadhānāṁ janādhipa ,
kva nu rājangato'sīha tyaktvā māṁ nirjane vane.
12. damayantī uvāca siṃhoraska mahābāho niṣadhānām janādhipa
kva nu rājan gataḥ asi iha tyaktvā mām nirjane vane
12. Damayantī said: "O lion-chested one, O great-armed one, O chief of the Niṣadhas! O King, where, pray tell, have you gone from here, having abandoned me in this desolate forest?"
अश्वमेधादिभिर्वीर क्रतुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः ।
कथमिष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्र मयि मिथ्या प्रवर्तसे ॥१३॥
13. aśvamedhādibhirvīra kratubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
kathamiṣṭvā naravyāghra mayi mithyā pravartase.
13. aśvamedhādibhiḥ vīra kratubhiḥ suāptadakṣiṇaiḥ
katham iṣṭvā naravyāghra mayi mithyā pravartase
13. vīra naravyāghra aśvamedhādibhiḥ suāptadakṣiṇaiḥ

13. O hero, O tiger among men, how can you act deceitfully towards me, after performing such Vedic rituals (kratu) as the Aśvamedha and others, which were endowed with ample ritual fees (dakṣiṇa)?
यत्त्वयोक्तं नरव्याघ्र मत्समक्षं महाद्युते ।
कर्तुमर्हसि कल्याण तदृतं पार्थिवर्षभ ॥१४॥
14. yattvayoktaṁ naravyāghra matsamakṣaṁ mahādyute ,
kartumarhasi kalyāṇa tadṛtaṁ pārthivarṣabha.
14. yat tvayā uktam naravyāghra matsamakṣam mahādyute
kartum arhasi kalyāṇa tat ṛtam pārthivarṣabha
14. O best among men, O greatly brilliant one, O benevolent one, O best of kings, you ought to fulfill that truth (ṛtam) which you spoke in my presence.
यथोक्तं विहगैर्हंसैः समीपे तव भूमिप ।
मत्सकाशे च तैरुक्तं तदवेक्षितुमर्हसि ॥१५॥
15. yathoktaṁ vihagairhaṁsaiḥ samīpe tava bhūmipa ,
matsakāśe ca tairuktaṁ tadavekṣitumarhasi.
15. yathā uktam vihagaiḥ haṃsaiḥ samīpe tava bhūmipa
matsakāśe ca taiḥ uktam tat avekṣitum arhasi
15. O King, you should consider that which was spoken by the birds, by the swans, in your presence, and also that which was spoken by them in my presence.
चत्वार एकतो वेदाः साङ्गोपाङ्गाः सविस्तराः ।
स्वधीता मानवश्रेष्ठ सत्यमेकं किलैकतः ॥१६॥
16. catvāra ekato vedāḥ sāṅgopāṅgāḥ savistarāḥ ,
svadhītā mānavaśreṣṭha satyamekaṁ kilaikataḥ.
16. catvāraḥ ekataḥ vedāḥ sāṅgopāṅgāḥ savistarāḥ
svadhītāḥ mānavaśreṣṭha satyam ekam kila ekataḥ
16. O best of men, on one side are the four Vedas, well-studied with all their primary and secondary ancillary texts, and their detailed elaborations. On the other side, there is verily one truth (satyam).
तस्मादर्हसि शत्रुघ्न सत्यं कर्तुं नरेश्वर ।
उक्तवानसि यद्वीर मत्सकाशे पुरा वचः ॥१७॥
17. tasmādarhasi śatrughna satyaṁ kartuṁ nareśvara ,
uktavānasi yadvīra matsakāśe purā vacaḥ.
17. tasmāt arhasi śatrughna satyam kartum nareśvara
uktavān asi yat vīra mat sakāśe purā vacaḥ
17. Therefore, O Shatrughna, O lord of men, you ought to fulfill the promise which you, O hero, made in my presence long ago.
हा वीर ननु नामाहमिष्टा किल तवानघ ।
अस्यामटव्यां घोरायां किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥१८॥
18. hā vīra nanu nāmāhamiṣṭā kila tavānagha ,
asyāmaṭavyāṁ ghorāyāṁ kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase.
18. hā vīra nanu nāma aham iṣṭā kila tava anagha
asyām aṭavyām ghorāyām kim mām na pratibhāṣase
18. Alas, O hero! Am I not indeed your beloved, O sinless one? Why do you not speak to me in this terrifying forest?
भर्त्सयत्येष मां रौद्रो व्यात्तास्यो दारुणाकृतिः ।
अरण्यराट्क्षुधाविष्टः किं मां न त्रातुमर्हसि ॥१९॥
19. bhartsayatyeṣa māṁ raudro vyāttāsyo dāruṇākṛtiḥ ,
araṇyarāṭkṣudhāviṣṭaḥ kiṁ māṁ na trātumarhasi.
19. bhartsayati eṣaḥ mām raudraḥ vyāttāsyaḥ dāruṇākṛtiḥ
araṇyarāṭ kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ kim mām na trātum arhasi
19. This fierce creature, with its gaping mouth and dreadful appearance, the king of the forest, overcome by hunger, is threatening me. Why are you not able to protect me?
न मे त्वदन्या सुभगे प्रिया इत्यब्रवीस्तदा ।
तामृतां कुरु कल्याण पुरोक्तां भारतीं नृप ॥२०॥
20. na me tvadanyā subhage priyā ityabravīstadā ,
tāmṛtāṁ kuru kalyāṇa puroktāṁ bhāratīṁ nṛpa.
20. na me tvat anyā subhage priyā iti abravīḥ tadā
tām ṛtām kuru kalyāṇa purōktām bhāratīm nṛpa
20. You said then, 'No one else is dear to me but you, O fortunate one.' O auspicious king, now fulfill that word (speech) spoken previously.
उन्मत्तां विलपन्तीं मां भार्यामिष्टां नराधिप ।
ईप्सितामीप्सितो नाथ किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥२१॥
21. unmattāṁ vilapantīṁ māṁ bhāryāmiṣṭāṁ narādhipa ,
īpsitāmīpsito nātha kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase.
21. unmattām vilapantīm mām bhāryām iṣṭām narādhipa
| īpsitām īpsitaḥ nātha kim mām na pratibhāṣase
21. O king (narādhipa), O my desired lord (nātha), why do you not respond to me, your beloved wife, who is frantic, lamenting, and desired by you?
कृशां दीनां विवर्णां च मलिनां वसुधाधिप ।
वस्त्रार्धप्रावृतामेकां विलपन्तीमनाथवत् ॥२२॥
22. kṛśāṁ dīnāṁ vivarṇāṁ ca malināṁ vasudhādhipa ,
vastrārdhaprāvṛtāmekāṁ vilapantīmanāthavat.
22. kṛśām dīnām vivarṇām ca malinām vasudhādhipa |
vastraardhaprāvṛtām ekām vilapantīm anāthavat
22. O lord of the earth (vasudhādhipa), (you see) me, emaciated, miserable, pale, and soiled, half-covered with clothes, alone and wailing like an orphan.
यूथभ्रष्टामिवैकां मां हरिणीं पृथुलोचन ।
न मानयसि मानार्ह रुदतीमरिकर्शन ॥२३॥
23. yūthabhraṣṭāmivaikāṁ māṁ hariṇīṁ pṛthulocana ,
na mānayasi mānārha rudatīmarikarśana.
23. yūthabhraṣṭām iva ekām mām hariṇīm pṛthulocana
| na mānayasi mānārha rudatīm arikarśana
23. O broad-eyed one (pṛthulocana), O worthy of honor (mānārha), O destroyer of enemies (arikarśana), you do not respect me, who is alone like a doe strayed from its herd and weeping.
महाराज महारण्ये मामिहैकाकिनीं सतीम् ।
आभाषमाणां स्वां पत्नीं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥२४॥
24. mahārāja mahāraṇye māmihaikākinīṁ satīm ,
ābhāṣamāṇāṁ svāṁ patnīṁ kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase.
24. mahārāja mahāraṇye mām iha ekākinīm satīm |
ābhāṣamāṇām svām patnīm kim mām na pratibhāṣase
24. O great king (mahārāja), why do you not respond to me, your own wife, who is chaste and speaking to you here alone in this great forest?
कुलशीलोपसंपन्नं चारुसर्वाङ्गशोभनम् ।
नाद्य त्वामनुपश्यामि गिरावस्मिन्नरोत्तम ।
वने चास्मिन्महाघोरे सिंहव्याघ्रनिषेविते ॥२५॥
25. kulaśīlopasaṁpannaṁ cārusarvāṅgaśobhanam ,
nādya tvāmanupaśyāmi girāvasminnarottama ,
vane cāsminmahāghore siṁhavyāghraniṣevite.
25. kulaśīlopasampannam cārusarvāṅgaśobhanam
na adya tvām anupaśyāmi
girau asmin narottama vane ca
asmin mahāghore siṃhavyāghraniṣevite
25. O best of men, you who are endowed with noble birth and excellent character, and whose entire body is beautifully adorned – I do not see you today on this mountain or in this exceedingly dreadful forest frequented by lions and tigers.
शयानमुपविष्टं वा स्थितं वा निषधाधिप ।
प्रस्थितं वा नरश्रेष्ठ मम शोकविवर्धन ॥२६॥
26. śayānamupaviṣṭaṁ vā sthitaṁ vā niṣadhādhipa ,
prasthitaṁ vā naraśreṣṭha mama śokavivardhana.
26. śayānam upaviṣṭam vā sthitam vā niṣadhādhipa
prasthitam vā naraśreṣṭha mama śokavivardhana
26. O lord of Niṣadha, O best of men, you who intensify my grief – whether you are lying down, or sitting, or standing, or have departed, (I do not see you).
कं नु पृच्छामि दुःखार्ता त्वदर्थे शोककर्शिता ।
कच्चिद्दृष्टस्त्वयारण्ये संगत्येह नलो नृपः ॥२७॥
27. kaṁ nu pṛcchāmi duḥkhārtā tvadarthe śokakarśitā ,
kacciddṛṣṭastvayāraṇye saṁgatyeha nalo nṛpaḥ.
27. kam nu pṛcchāmi duḥkhārtā tvadarthe śokakarśitā
kaccit dṛṣṭaḥ tvayā araṇye saṃgatya iha nalaḥ nṛpaḥ
27. Afflicted and emaciated by grief for your sake, whom indeed should I ask? Has King Nala, by chance, been seen or encountered by you here in this forest?
को नु मे कथयेदद्य वनेऽस्मिन्विष्ठितं नलम् ।
अभिरूपं महात्मानं परव्यूहविनाशनम् ॥२८॥
28. ko nu me kathayedadya vane'sminviṣṭhitaṁ nalam ,
abhirūpaṁ mahātmānaṁ paravyūhavināśanam.
28. kaḥ nu me kathayet adya vane asmin viṣṭhitam
nalam abhirūpam mahātmānam paravyūhavināśanam
28. Who in this forest today would indeed tell me where Nala is residing – that handsome, great-souled (mahātman) one, the destroyer of enemy armies?
यमन्वेषसि राजानं नलं पद्मनिभेक्षणम् ।
अयं स इति कस्याद्य श्रोष्यामि मधुरां गिरम् ॥२९॥
29. yamanveṣasi rājānaṁ nalaṁ padmanibhekṣaṇam ,
ayaṁ sa iti kasyādya śroṣyāmi madhurāṁ giram.
29. yam anveṣasi rājānam nalam padmanibhekṣaṇam
ayam saḥ iti kasya adya śroṣyāmi madhurām giram
29. From whose lips will I hear today the sweet words, 'This is he,' referring to King Nala, the lotus-eyed one, whom you are seeking?
अरण्यराडयं श्रीमांश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रो महाहनुः ।
शार्दूलोऽभिमुखः प्रैति पृच्छाम्येनमशङ्किता ॥३०॥
30. araṇyarāḍayaṁ śrīmāṁścaturdaṁṣṭro mahāhanuḥ ,
śārdūlo'bhimukhaḥ praiti pṛcchāmyenamaśaṅkitā.
30. araṇyarāṭ ayam śrīmān caturdaṃṣṭraḥ mahāhanuḥ
śārdūlaḥ abhimukhaḥ praiti pṛcchāmi enam aśaṅkitā
30. This glorious forest-king (śārdūla), a tiger with four tusks and a large jaw, is approaching me. I will question him fearlessly.
भवान्मृगाणामधिपस्त्वमस्मिन्कानने प्रभुः ।
विदर्भराजतनयां दमयन्तीति विद्धि माम् ॥३१॥
31. bhavānmṛgāṇāmadhipastvamasminkānane prabhuḥ ,
vidarbharājatanayāṁ damayantīti viddhi mām.
31. bhavān mṛgāṇām adhipaḥ tvam asmin kānane prabhuḥ
vidarbharājatanayām damayantī iti viddhi mām
31. You are the lord of beasts; you are the master in this forest. Know me to be Damayantī, the daughter of the King of Vidarbha.
निषधाधिपतेर्भार्यां नलस्यामित्रघातिनः ।
पतिमन्वेषतीमेकां कृपणां शोककर्शिताम् ।
आश्वासय मृगेन्द्रेह यदि दृष्टस्त्वया नलः ॥३२॥
32. niṣadhādhipaterbhāryāṁ nalasyāmitraghātinaḥ ,
patimanveṣatīmekāṁ kṛpaṇāṁ śokakarśitām ,
āśvāsaya mṛgendreha yadi dṛṣṭastvayā nalaḥ.
32. niṣadhādhipateḥ bhāryām nalasya
amitraghātinaḥ patim anveṣatīm ekām
kṛpaṇām śokakarśitām āśvāsaya
mṛgendra iha yadi dṛṣṭaḥ tvayā nalaḥ
32. O king of beasts (mṛgendra), console me, the wife of Nala, the slayer of enemies (amitraghātin), who am searching for my husband, alone, miserable, and emaciated by sorrow. Console me here if Nala has been seen by you.
अथ वारण्यनृपते नलं यदि न शंससि ।
मामदस्व मृगश्रेष्ठ विशोकां कुरु दुःखिताम् ॥३३॥
33. atha vāraṇyanṛpate nalaṁ yadi na śaṁsasi ,
māmadasva mṛgaśreṣṭha viśokāṁ kuru duḥkhitām.
33. atha vāraṇyanṛpate nalam yadi na śaṃsasi mām
adasva mṛgaśreṣṭha viśokām kuru duḥkhitām
33. Then, O king of the forest, if you do not tell me about Nala, then eat me, O best of animals, and free me, who is suffering, from sorrow.
श्रुत्वारण्ये विलपितं ममैष मृगराट्स्वयम् ।
यात्येतां मृष्टसलिलामापगां सागरंगमाम् ॥३४॥
34. śrutvāraṇye vilapitaṁ mamaiṣa mṛgarāṭsvayam ,
yātyetāṁ mṛṣṭasalilāmāpagāṁ sāgaraṁgamām.
34. śrutvā araṇye vilapitam mama eṣa mṛgarāj svayam
yāti etām mṛṣṭasalilām āpagām sāgaraṃgamām
34. Having heard my lamentation in the forest, this king of animals himself goes to this river whose water is clear and which flows into the ocean.
इमं शिलोच्चयं पुण्यं शृङ्गैर्बहुभिरुच्छ्रितैः ।
विराजद्भिर्दिवस्पृग्भिर्नैकवर्णैर्मनोरमैः ॥३५॥
35. imaṁ śiloccayaṁ puṇyaṁ śṛṅgairbahubhirucchritaiḥ ,
virājadbhirdivaspṛgbhirnaikavarṇairmanoramaiḥ.
35. imam śiloccayam puṇyam śṛṅgaiḥ bahubhiḥ ucchritaiḥ
virājadbhiḥ divaspṛgbhiḥ naikavarṇaiḥ manoramaiḥ
35. This holy mountain, uplifted by numerous elevated peaks, which are resplendent, touch the sky, are of various colors, and are delightful.
नानाधातुसमाकीर्णं विविधोपलभूषितम् ।
अस्यारण्यस्य महतः केतुभूतमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥३६॥
36. nānādhātusamākīrṇaṁ vividhopalabhūṣitam ,
asyāraṇyasya mahataḥ ketubhūtamivocchritam.

araṇyasya mahataḥ ketubhūtam iva ucchritam
36. This mountain is covered with various ores and adorned with diverse precious stones, standing elevated like a banner for this great forest.
सिंहशार्दूलमातङ्गवराहर्क्षमृगायुतम् ।
पतत्रिभिर्बहुविधैः समन्तादनुनादितम् ॥३७॥
37. siṁhaśārdūlamātaṅgavarāharkṣamṛgāyutam ,
patatribhirbahuvidhaiḥ samantādanunāditam.
37. siṃhaśārdūlamātaṅgavarāharkṣamṛgāyutam
patatribhiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ samantāt anunāditam
37. This (mountain) is filled with lions, tigers, elephants, boars, bears, and deer, and it resounds from all sides with the calls of various kinds of birds.
किंशुकाशोकबकुलपुंनागैरुपशोभितम् ।
सरिद्भिः सविहंगाभिः शिखरैश्चोपशोभितम् ।
गिरिराजमिमं तावत्पृच्छामि नृपतिं प्रति ॥३८॥
38. kiṁśukāśokabakulapuṁnāgairupaśobhitam ,
saridbhiḥ savihaṁgābhiḥ śikharaiścopaśobhitam ,
girirājamimaṁ tāvatpṛcchāmi nṛpatiṁ prati.

38. This (mountain) is adorned with kiṃśuka, aśoka, bakula, and punnāga trees. It is also beautified by rivers filled with birds, and by its peaks. I shall now question this king of mountains concerning the (missing) king.
भगवन्नचलश्रेष्ठ दिव्यदर्शन विश्रुत ।
शरण्य बहुकल्याण नमस्तेऽस्तु महीधर ॥३९॥
39. bhagavannacalaśreṣṭha divyadarśana viśruta ,
śaraṇya bahukalyāṇa namaste'stu mahīdhara.

39. O revered one (bhagavan), chief among immovable ones, renowned for your divine vision, refuge, and bestower of many blessings! Salutations to you, O mountain (mahīdhara)!
प्रणमे त्वाभिगम्याहं राजपुत्रीं निबोध माम् ।
राज्ञः स्नुषां राजभार्यां दमयन्तीति विश्रुताम् ॥४०॥
40. praṇame tvābhigamyāhaṁ rājaputrīṁ nibodha mām ,
rājñaḥ snuṣāṁ rājabhāryāṁ damayantīti viśrutām.

40. Having approached you, I bow down to you. Know me as a princess, the daughter-in-law of the king, the king's wife, known indeed as Damayantī.
राजा विदर्भाधिपतिः पिता मम महारथः ।
भीमो नाम क्षितिपतिश्चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य रक्षिता ॥४१॥
41. rājā vidarbhādhipatiḥ pitā mama mahārathaḥ ,
bhīmo nāma kṣitipatiścāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā.

41. My father, the king, who is the lord of Vidarbha and a great warrior, is named Bhīma. He is a ruler and the protector of the four social classes.
राजसूयाश्वमेधानां क्रतूनां दक्षिणावताम् ।
आहर्ता पार्थिवश्रेष्ठः पृथुचार्वञ्चितेक्षणः ॥४२॥
42. rājasūyāśvamedhānāṁ kratūnāṁ dakṣiṇāvatām ,
āhartā pārthivaśreṣṭhaḥ pṛthucārvañcitekṣaṇaḥ.

42. He is the performer of the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (Vedic rituals), which are accompanied by generous offerings. He is the foremost among kings, whose wide eyes are beautifully expansive.
ब्रह्मण्यः साधुवृत्तश्च सत्यवागनसूयकः ।
शीलवान्सुसमाचारः पृथुश्रीर्धर्मविच्छुचिः ॥४३॥
43. brahmaṇyaḥ sādhuvṛttaśca satyavāganasūyakaḥ ,
śīlavānsusamācāraḥ pṛthuśrīrdharmavicchuciḥ.
43. brāhmaṇyaḥ sādhuvṛttaḥ ca satyavāk anasūyakaḥ
śīlavān susamācāraḥ pṛthuśrīḥ dharmavicchuciḥ
43. He is devoted to Brahmins, of good conduct, truthful, and free from envy. He is virtuous, possesses excellent behavior, great splendor, is a knower of natural law (dharma), and is pure.
सम्यग्गोप्ता विदर्भाणां निर्जितारिगणः प्रभुः ।
तस्य मां विद्धि तनयां भगवंस्त्वामुपस्थिताम् ॥४४॥
44. samyaggoptā vidarbhāṇāṁ nirjitārigaṇaḥ prabhuḥ ,
tasya māṁ viddhi tanayāṁ bhagavaṁstvāmupasthitām.
44. samyak goptā vidarbhāṇām nirjitārigaṇaḥ prabhuḥ
tasya mām viddhi tanayām bhagavan tvām upasthitām
44. He is the perfect protector of the Vidarbhas, a conqueror of enemy hosts, and a powerful lord. Know me, O revered one, to be the daughter of that king, who has come before you.
निषधेषु महाशैल श्वशुरो मे नृपोत्तमः ।
सुगृहीतनामा विख्यातो वीरसेन इति स्म ह ॥४५॥
45. niṣadheṣu mahāśaila śvaśuro me nṛpottamaḥ ,
sugṛhītanāmā vikhyāto vīrasena iti sma ha.
45. niṣadheṣu mahāśaila śvaśuraḥ me nṛpa uttamaḥ
sugṛhītanāmā vikhyātaḥ vīrasena iti sma ha
45. O great mountain, my father-in-law is the best of kings. He is renowned, and his name, Vīrasena, is auspiciously remembered, it is said.
तस्य राज्ञः सुतो वीरः श्रीमान्सत्यपराक्रमः ।
क्रमप्राप्तं पितुः स्वं यो राज्यं समनुशास्ति ह ॥४६॥
46. tasya rājñaḥ suto vīraḥ śrīmānsatyaparākramaḥ ,
kramaprāptaṁ pituḥ svaṁ yo rājyaṁ samanuśāsti ha.
46. tasya rājñaḥ sutaḥ vīraḥ śrīmān satyaparākramaḥ
krama prāptam pituḥ svam yaḥ rājyam samanuśāsti ha
46. Indeed, his glorious, heroic, and truly mighty son rules his own kingdom, which he inherited in due succession from his father.
नलो नामारिदमनः पुण्यश्लोक इति श्रुतः ।
ब्रह्मण्यो वेदविद्वाग्मी पुण्यकृत्सोमपोऽग्निचित् ॥४७॥
47. nalo nāmāridamanaḥ puṇyaśloka iti śrutaḥ ,
brahmaṇyo vedavidvāgmī puṇyakṛtsomapo'gnicit.
47. nalaḥ nāma ari damanaḥ puṇyaślokaḥ iti śrutaḥ
brahmaṇyaḥ veda vid vāgmī puṇya kṛt somapaḥ agni cit
47. He is Nala by name, the subduer of enemies, renowned as 'one of pious fame'. He is devoted to Brahmins, a knower of the Vedas, eloquent, a doer of meritorious deeds, a drinker of Soma, and a performer of the Agnicayana (agnicit).
यष्टा दाता च योद्धा च सम्यक्चैव प्रशासिता ।
तस्य मामचलश्रेष्ठ विद्धि भार्यामिहागताम् ॥४८॥
48. yaṣṭā dātā ca yoddhā ca samyakcaiva praśāsitā ,
tasya māmacalaśreṣṭha viddhi bhāryāmihāgatām.
48. yaṣṭā dātā ca yoddhā ca samyak ca eva praśāsitā
tasya mām acala śreṣṭha viddhi bhāryām iha āgatām
48. He is a sacrificer, a generous giver, a warrior, and truly a righteous ruler. O best of mountains, know that I am his wife, who has come here.
त्यक्तश्रियं भर्तृहीनामनाथां व्यसनान्विताम् ।
अन्वेषमाणां भर्तारं तं वै नरवरोत्तमम् ॥४९॥
49. tyaktaśriyaṁ bhartṛhīnāmanāthāṁ vyasanānvitām ,
anveṣamāṇāṁ bhartāraṁ taṁ vai naravarottamam.
49. tyaktaśriyam bhartṛhīnām anāthām vyasanānvitām
anveṣamāṇām bhartāram tam vai naravarottamam
49. Bereft of fortune, without her husband, helpless, and afflicted by misfortune, she was searching for that very best of men, her husband, the foremost hero.
खमुल्लिखद्भिरेतैर्हि त्वया शृङ्गशतैर्नृपः ।
कच्चिद्दृष्टोऽचलश्रेष्ठ वनेऽस्मिन्दारुणे नलः ॥५०॥
50. khamullikhadbhiretairhi tvayā śṛṅgaśatairnṛpaḥ ,
kacciddṛṣṭo'calaśreṣṭha vane'smindāruṇe nalaḥ.
50. kham ullikhadbhiḥ etaiḥ hi tvayā śṛṅgaśataiḥ nṛpaḥ
kaccit dṛṣṭaḥ acalaśreṣṭha vane asmin dāruṇe nalaḥ
50. O best of mountains, by these hundreds of peaks of yours that indeed scrape the sky, have you, I wonder, seen King Nala in this dreadful forest?
गजेन्द्रविक्रमो धीमान्दीर्घबाहुरमर्षणः ।
विक्रान्तः सत्यवाग्धीरो भर्ता मम महायशाः ।
निषधानामधिपतिः कच्चिद्दृष्टस्त्वया नलः ॥५१॥
51. gajendravikramo dhīmāndīrghabāhuramarṣaṇaḥ ,
vikrāntaḥ satyavāgdhīro bhartā mama mahāyaśāḥ ,
niṣadhānāmadhipatiḥ kacciddṛṣṭastvayā nalaḥ.

51. Have you perchance seen my husband, Nala, the lord of the Niṣadhas, who possesses the valor of a lordly elephant, is intelligent, long-armed, intolerant (of insult), mighty, truthful, resolute, and highly renowned?
किं मां विलपतीमेकां पर्वतश्रेष्ठ दुःखिताम् ।
गिरा नाश्वासयस्यद्य स्वां सुतामिव दुःखिताम् ॥५२॥
52. kiṁ māṁ vilapatīmekāṁ parvataśreṣṭha duḥkhitām ,
girā nāśvāsayasyadya svāṁ sutāmiva duḥkhitām.
52. kim mām vilapatīm ekām parvataśreṣṭha duḥkhitām
girā na āśvāsayasi adya svām sutām iva duḥkhitām
52. O best of mountains, why do you not now console me, who am distressed, weeping, and alone, with your words, just as you would your own distressed daughter?
वीर विक्रान्त धर्मज्ञ सत्यसंध महीपते ।
यद्यस्यस्मिन्वने राजन्दर्शयात्मानमात्मना ॥५३॥
53. vīra vikrānta dharmajña satyasaṁdha mahīpate ,
yadyasyasminvane rājandarśayātmānamātmanā.

asya asmin vane rājan darśaya ātmānam ātmanā
53. O heroic, valiant one, knower of natural law (dharma), and truthful lord of the earth! O king, if you are present in this forest for this distressed one, then reveal your true self (ātman) through your own power (ātman).
कदा नु स्निग्धगम्भीरां जीमूतस्वनसंनिभाम् ।
श्रोष्यामि नैषधस्याहं वाचं ताममृतोपमाम् ॥५४॥
54. kadā nu snigdhagambhīrāṁ jīmūtasvanasaṁnibhām ,
śroṣyāmi naiṣadhasyāhaṁ vācaṁ tāmamṛtopamām.

śroṣyāmi naiṣadhasya aham vācam tām amṛtopamām
54. When, oh when, will I hear that soft and deep voice, resembling the thunder of a cloud and like nectar, the voice of Nala, the king of Niṣadha?
वैदर्भीत्येव कथितां शुभां राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
आम्नायसारिणीमृद्धां मम शोकनिबर्हिणीम् ॥५५॥
55. vaidarbhītyeva kathitāṁ śubhāṁ rājño mahātmanaḥ ,
āmnāyasāriṇīmṛddhāṁ mama śokanibarhiṇīm.
55. vaidarbhī iti eva kathitām śubhām rājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
āmnāyasāriṇīm ṛddhām mama śokanibarhiṇīm
55. That auspicious and rich voice of the great-souled king, which calls me 'Vaidarbhī', filled with traditional wisdom, and which dispels my sorrow.
इति सा तं गिरिश्रेष्ठमुक्त्वा पार्थिवनन्दिनी ।
दमयन्ती ततो भूयो जगाम दिशमुत्तराम् ॥५६॥
56. iti sā taṁ giriśreṣṭhamuktvā pārthivanandinī ,
damayantī tato bhūyo jagāma diśamuttarām.
56. iti sā tam giriśreṣṭham uktvā pārthivanandinī
damayantī tataḥ bhūyaḥ jagāma diśam uttarām
56. Having spoken thus to that supreme mountain, Damayanti, the princess, then went further in the northern direction.
सा गत्वा त्रीनहोरात्रान्ददर्श परमाङ्गना ।
तापसारण्यमतुलं दिव्यकाननदर्शनम् ॥५७॥
57. sā gatvā trīnahorātrāndadarśa paramāṅganā ,
tāpasāraṇyamatulaṁ divyakānanadarśanam.
57. sā gatvā trīn ahorātrān dadarśa paramāṅganā

57. After traveling for three days and nights, that excellent woman saw an unparalleled hermitage (āśrama) forest, which appeared like a divine grove.
वसिष्ठभृग्वत्रिसमैस्तापसैरुपशोभितम् ।
नियतैः संयताहारैर्दमशौचसमन्वितैः ॥५८॥
58. vasiṣṭhabhṛgvatrisamaistāpasairupaśobhitam ,
niyataiḥ saṁyatāhārairdamaśaucasamanvitaiḥ.
58. vasiṣṭhabhṛgvatrisamaiḥ tāpasaiḥ upaśobhitam
niyataiḥ saṃyatāhāraiḥ damaśaucasamanvitaiḥ
58. It was graced by ascetics (tāpasa) who were comparable to Vasiṣṭha, Bhṛgu, and Atri, disciplined, abstemious, and endowed with self-restraint (dama) and purity (śauca).
अब्भक्षैर्वायुभक्षैश्च पत्राहारैस्तथैव च ।
जितेन्द्रियैर्महाभागैः स्वर्गमार्गदिदृक्षुभिः ॥५९॥
59. abbhakṣairvāyubhakṣaiśca patrāhāraistathaiva ca ,
jitendriyairmahābhāgaiḥ svargamārgadidṛkṣubhiḥ.
59. abbhakṣaiḥ vāyubhakṣaiḥ ca patrāhāraiḥ tathā eva
ca jitendriyaiḥ mahābhāgaiḥ svargamārgadidṛkṣubhiḥ
59. It was graced by ascetics who subsisted on water, on air, and also on leaves; they had conquered their senses, were greatly virtuous, and yearned to see the path to heaven.
वल्कलाजिनसंवीतैर्मुनिभिः संयतेन्द्रियैः ।
तापसाध्युषितं रम्यं ददर्शाश्रममण्डलम् ॥६०॥
60. valkalājinasaṁvītairmunibhiḥ saṁyatendriyaiḥ ,
tāpasādhyuṣitaṁ ramyaṁ dadarśāśramamaṇḍalam.

tāpasādhyuṣitam ramyam dadarśa āśramamaṇḍalam
60. She saw the delightful (āśrama) complex, which was inhabited by ascetics (tāpasa) and sages (muni) clad in bark and deerskin, with their senses perfectly controlled.
सा दृष्ट्वैवाश्रमपदं नानामृगनिषेवितम् ।
शाखामृगगणैश्चैव तापसैश्च समन्वितम् ॥६१॥
61. sā dṛṣṭvaivāśramapadaṁ nānāmṛganiṣevitam ,
śākhāmṛgagaṇaiścaiva tāpasaiśca samanvitam.

सुभ्रूः सुकेशी सुश्रोणी सुकुचा सुद्विजानना ।
वर्चस्विनी सुप्रतिष्ठा स्वञ्चितोद्यतगामिनी ॥६२॥
62. subhrūḥ sukeśī suśroṇī sukucā sudvijānanā ,
varcasvinī supratiṣṭhā svañcitodyatagāminī.

62. She had beautiful eyebrows, beautiful hair, beautiful hips, beautiful breasts, and a lovely face with beautiful teeth. She was radiant, graceful in her bearing, and walked with a beautiful, upright gait.
सा विवेशाश्रमपदं वीरसेनसुतप्रिया ।
योषिद्रत्नं महाभागा दमयन्ती मनस्विनी ॥६३॥
63. sā viveśāśramapadaṁ vīrasenasutapriyā ,
yoṣidratnaṁ mahābhāgā damayantī manasvinī.

63. Damayantī, the beloved wife of Vīrasena's son (Nala), a jewel among women, highly fortunate, and sagacious, entered the hermitage (āśrama).
साभिवाद्य तपोवृद्धान्विनयावनता स्थिता ।
स्वागतं त इति प्रोक्ता तैः सर्वैस्तापसैश्च सा ॥६४॥
64. sābhivādya tapovṛddhānvinayāvanatā sthitā ,
svāgataṁ ta iti proktā taiḥ sarvaistāpasaiśca sā.
64. sā abhivādya tapovṛddhān vinayāvanatā sthitā
svāgatam ta iti proktā taiḥ sarvaiḥ tāpasaiḥ ca sā
64. Having humbly bowed and greeted the ascetics (tapasvins) venerable through their austerities (tapas), she stood there. She was then addressed by all those ascetics, who said, 'Welcome!'
पूजां चास्या यथान्यायं कृत्वा तत्र तपोधनाः ।
आस्यतामित्यथोचुस्ते ब्रूहि किं करवामहे ॥६५॥
65. pūjāṁ cāsyā yathānyāyaṁ kṛtvā tatra tapodhanāḥ ,
āsyatāmityathocuste brūhi kiṁ karavāmahe.
65. pūjām ca asyāḥ yathānyāyam kṛtvā tatra tapodhanāḥ
āsyatām iti atha ucuḥ te brūhi kim karavāmahe
65. And having duly offered her worship there, the ascetics (tapodhanāḥ) said, "Please be seated." Then they asked her, "Tell us, what can we do?"
तानुवाच वरारोहा कच्चिद्भगवतामिह ।
तपस्यग्निषु धर्मेषु मृगपक्षिषु चानघाः ।
कुशलं वो महाभागाः स्वधर्मचरणेषु च ॥६६॥
66. tānuvāca varārohā kaccidbhagavatāmiha ,
tapasyagniṣu dharmeṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu cānaghāḥ ,
kuśalaṁ vo mahābhāgāḥ svadharmacaraṇeṣu ca.
66. tām uvāca varārohā kaccit bhagavatām
iha tapasi agniṣu dharmeṣu
mṛgapakṣiṣu ca anaghāḥ kuśalam
vaḥ mahābhāgāḥ svadharmacaraṇeṣu ca
66. The beautiful woman (varārohā) said to them: "O sinless (anaghāḥ) and highly fortunate ones (mahābhāgāḥ), I hope all is well for you here, among your venerable selves, regarding your asceticism (tapas), your sacred fires, your observances of natural law (dharma), with the deer and birds, and in the practice of your own inherent duties (svadharma)."
तैरुक्ता कुशलं भद्रे सर्वत्रेति यशस्विनी ।
ब्रूहि सर्वानवद्याङ्गि का त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥६७॥
67. tairuktā kuśalaṁ bhadre sarvatreti yaśasvinī ,
brūhi sarvānavadyāṅgi kā tvaṁ kiṁ ca cikīrṣasi.
67. taiḥ uktā kuśalam bhadre sarvatra iti yaśasvinī
brūhi sarva anavadyāṅgi kā tvam kim ca cikīrṣasi
67. The glorious woman (yaśasvinī) was told by them, "All is well, O gentle one (bhadre), everywhere." Then they said, "O woman of entirely flawless body (sarvānavadyāṅgi), tell us, who are you and what do you wish to do?"
दृष्ट्वैव ते परं रूपं द्युतिं च परमामिह ।
विस्मयो नः समुत्पन्नः समाश्वसिहि मा शुचः ॥६८॥
68. dṛṣṭvaiva te paraṁ rūpaṁ dyutiṁ ca paramāmiha ,
vismayo naḥ samutpannaḥ samāśvasihi mā śucaḥ.
68. dṛṣṭvā eva te param rūpam dyutim ca paramām iha
vismayaḥ naḥ samutpannaḥ samāśvasihi mā śucaḥ
68. Merely having seen your exquisite form and supreme radiance here, great wonder has arisen in us. Please take comfort; do not grieve.
अस्यारण्यस्य महती देवता वा महीभृतः ।
अस्या नु नद्याः कल्याणि वद सत्यमनिन्दिते ॥६९॥
69. asyāraṇyasya mahatī devatā vā mahībhṛtaḥ ,
asyā nu nadyāḥ kalyāṇi vada satyamanindite.

69. O auspicious and blameless one, tell the truth: are you the great deity of this forest, or of this mountain, or indeed of this river?
साब्रवीत्तानृषीन्नाहमरण्यस्यास्य देवता ।
न चाप्यस्य गिरेर्विप्रा न नद्या देवताप्यहम् ॥७०॥
70. sābravīttānṛṣīnnāhamaraṇyasyāsya devatā ,
na cāpyasya girerviprā na nadyā devatāpyaham.
70. sā abravīt tān ṛṣīn na aham araṇyasya asya devatā na
ca api asya gireḥ viprāḥ na nadyāḥ devatā api aham
70. She said to those sages, 'O sages (viprāḥ), I am not the deity of this forest, nor indeed of this mountain, nor am I the deity of this river.'
मानुषीं मां विजानीत यूयं सर्वे तपोधनाः ।
विस्तरेणाभिधास्यामि तन्मे शृणुत सर्वशः ॥७१॥
71. mānuṣīṁ māṁ vijānīta yūyaṁ sarve tapodhanāḥ ,
vistareṇābhidhāsyāmi tanme śṛṇuta sarvaśaḥ.
71. mānuṣīm mām vijānīta yūyam sarve tapodhanāḥ
vistareṇa abhidhāsyāmi tat me śṛṇuta sarvaśaḥ
71. Understand me to be a human woman, all of you ascetics (tapodhanāḥ). I will explain it in detail, so hear all of it from me.
विदर्भेषु महीपालो भीमो नाम महाद्युतिः ।
तस्य मां तनयां सर्वे जानीत द्विजसत्तमाः ॥७२॥
72. vidarbheṣu mahīpālo bhīmo nāma mahādyutiḥ ,
tasya māṁ tanayāṁ sarve jānīta dvijasattamāḥ.
72. vidarbheṣu mahīpālaḥ bhīmaḥ nāma mahādyutiḥ
tasya mām tanayām sarve jānīta dvijasattamāḥ
72. In the country of Vidarbha, there was a king named Bhīma, who possessed great splendor. All of you, O foremost among the twice-born (dvijasattamāḥ), should know me as his daughter.
निषधाधिपतिर्धीमान्नलो नाम महायशाः ।
वीरः संग्रामजिद्विद्वान्मम भर्ता विशां पतिः ॥७३॥
73. niṣadhādhipatirdhīmānnalo nāma mahāyaśāḥ ,
vīraḥ saṁgrāmajidvidvānmama bhartā viśāṁ patiḥ.

73. My husband is Nala, the intelligent ruler of Niṣadha, renowned for his great fame. He is a hero, victorious in battle, learned, and the protector of his people.
देवताभ्यर्चनपरो द्विजातिजनवत्सलः ।
गोप्ता निषधवंशस्य महाभागो महाद्युतिः ॥७४॥
74. devatābhyarcanaparo dvijātijanavatsalaḥ ,
goptā niṣadhavaṁśasya mahābhāgo mahādyutiḥ.

74. He is devoted to worshipping the deities, affectionate towards the twice-born and the common people, the protector of the Niṣadha lineage, greatly fortunate, and possesses great splendor.
सत्यवाग्धर्मवित्प्राज्ञः सत्यसंधोऽरिमर्दनः ।
ब्रह्मण्यो दैवतपरः श्रीमान्परपुरंजयः ॥७५॥
75. satyavāgdharmavitprājñaḥ satyasaṁdho'rimardanaḥ ,
brahmaṇyo daivataparaḥ śrīmānparapuraṁjayaḥ.
75. satyavāk dharmavit prājñaḥ satyasandhaḥ arimardanaḥ
brahmaṇyaḥ daivataparaḥ śrīmān parapurañjayaḥ
75. He is truthful in speech, knowledgeable about natural law (dharma), wise, true to his vows, the vanquisher of enemies, devoted to Brahmins, dedicated to the deities, glorious, and conqueror of hostile cities.
नलो नाम नृपश्रेष्ठो देवराजसमद्युतिः ।
मम भर्ता विशालाक्षः पूर्णेन्दुवदनोऽरिहा ॥७६॥
76. nalo nāma nṛpaśreṣṭho devarājasamadyutiḥ ,
mama bhartā viśālākṣaḥ pūrṇenduvadano'rihā.

76. My husband is Nala, the foremost among kings, whose splendor is equal to that of the king of the gods. He has broad eyes, a face like the full moon, and is a destroyer of enemies.
आहर्ता क्रतुमुख्यानां वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
सपत्नानां मृधे हन्ता रविसोमसमप्रभः ॥७७॥
77. āhartā kratumukhyānāṁ vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ ,
sapatnānāṁ mṛdhe hantā ravisomasamaprabhaḥ.

77. He was the one who performed the principal Vedic rituals (yajña), who had mastered the Vedas and their ancillary branches, and who was a destroyer of enemies in battle, shining with the splendor of both the sun and the moon.
स कैश्चिन्निकृतिप्रज्ञैरकल्याणैर्नराधमैः ।
आहूय पृथिवीपालः सत्यधर्मपरायणः ।
देवने कुशलैर्जिह्मैर्जितो राज्यं वसूनि च ॥७८॥
78. sa kaiścinnikṛtiprajñairakalyāṇairnarādhamaiḥ ,
āhūya pṛthivīpālaḥ satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ ,
devane kuśalairjihmairjito rājyaṁ vasūni ca.
78. saḥ kaiścit nikṛtiprajñaiḥ akalyāṇaiḥ
narādhamaiḥ āhūya pṛthivīpālaḥ
satyadharmaparāyaṇaḥ devane kuśalaiḥ
jihmaiḥ jitaḥ rājyam vasūni ca
78. But he, the protector of the earth (pṛthivīpāla), who was devoted to truth and his (dharma) natural law, was challenged by some malicious, wicked, and base men. These dishonest individuals, skilled in gambling, defeated him, and he lost his kingdom and treasures.
तस्य मामवगच्छध्वं भार्यां राजर्षभस्य वै ।
दमयन्तीति विख्यातां भर्तृदर्शनलालसाम् ॥७९॥
79. tasya māmavagacchadhvaṁ bhāryāṁ rājarṣabhasya vai ,
damayantīti vikhyātāṁ bhartṛdarśanalālasām.
79. tasya mām avagacchadhvam bhāryām rājarṣabhasya
vai damayantī iti vikhyātām bhartṛdarśanalālasām
79. Indeed, you should know me to be his wife, the renowned Damayanti, the wife of that best among kings, who is deeply longing for the sight of her husband.
सा वनानि गिरींश्चैव सरांसि सरितस्तथा ।
पल्वलानि च रम्याणि तथारण्यानि सर्वशः ॥८०॥
80. sā vanāni girīṁścaiva sarāṁsi saritastathā ,
palvalāni ca ramyāṇi tathāraṇyāni sarvaśaḥ.
80. sā vanāni girīn ca eva sarāṃsi saritaḥ tathā
palvalāni ca ramyāṇi tathā araṇyāni sarvaśaḥ
80. She wanders through forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers, as well as beautiful ponds and wildernesses everywhere.
अन्वेषमाणा भर्तारं नलं रणविशारदम् ।
महात्मानं कृतास्त्रं च विचरामीह दुःखिता ॥८१॥
81. anveṣamāṇā bhartāraṁ nalaṁ raṇaviśāradam ,
mahātmānaṁ kṛtāstraṁ ca vicarāmīha duḥkhitā.
81. anveṣamāṇā bhartāram nalam raṇaviśāradam
mahātmānam kṛtāstram ca vicarāmi iha duḥkhitā
81. Distressed, I wander here searching for my husband Nala, who is skilled in battle, noble-souled, and a master of weapons.
कच्चिद्भगवतां पुण्यं तपोवनमिदं नृपः ।
भवेत्प्राप्तो नलो नाम निषधानां जनाधिपः ॥८२॥
82. kaccidbhagavatāṁ puṇyaṁ tapovanamidaṁ nṛpaḥ ,
bhavetprāpto nalo nāma niṣadhānāṁ janādhipaḥ.
82. kaccit bhagavatām puṇyam tapovanam idam nṛpaḥ
bhavet prāptaḥ nalaḥ nāma niṣadhānām janādhipaḥ
82. Could it be that King Nala, the ruler of the Niṣadhas, has arrived at this sacred hermitage of the revered ascetics?
यत्कृतेऽहमिदं विप्राः प्रपन्ना भृशदारुणम् ।
वनं प्रतिभयं घोरं शार्दूलमृगसेवितम् ॥८३॥
83. yatkṛte'hamidaṁ viprāḥ prapannā bhṛśadāruṇam ,
vanaṁ pratibhayaṁ ghoraṁ śārdūlamṛgasevitam.
83. yatkṛte aham idam viprāḥ prapannā bhṛśadāruṇam
vanam pratibhayam ghoram śārdūlamṛgasevitam
83. O Brahmins, it is for his sake that I have resorted to this exceedingly terrible, terrifying, and fierce forest, which is frequented by tigers and wild animals.
यदि कैश्चिदहोरात्रैर्न द्रक्ष्यामि नलं नृपम् ।
आत्मानं श्रेयसा योक्ष्ये देहस्यास्य विमोचनात् ॥८४॥
84. yadi kaiścidahorātrairna drakṣyāmi nalaṁ nṛpam ,
ātmānaṁ śreyasā yokṣye dehasyāsya vimocanāt.
84. yadi kaiścit ahorātraiḥ na drakṣyāmi nalam nṛpam
ātmānam śreyasā yokṣye dehasya asya vimocanāt
84. If I do not see King Nala within some days and nights, I shall unite my self (ātman) with ultimate good (śreyas) through the release of this body.
को नु मे जीवितेनार्थस्तमृते पुरुषर्षभम् ।
कथं भविष्याम्यद्याहं भर्तृशोकाभिपीडिता ॥८५॥
85. ko nu me jīvitenārthastamṛte puruṣarṣabham ,
kathaṁ bhaviṣyāmyadyāhaṁ bhartṛśokābhipīḍitā.
85. kaḥ nu me jīvitena arthaḥ tam ṛte puruṣarṣabham
katham bhaviṣyāmi adya aham bhartṛśokābhipīḍitā
85. What purpose does life hold for me without that foremost among men (puruṣarṣabha)? How can I continue to exist now, afflicted by grief for my husband?
एवं विलपतीमेकामरण्ये भीमनन्दिनीम् ।
दमयन्तीमथोचुस्ते तापसाः सत्यवादिनः ॥८६॥
86. evaṁ vilapatīmekāmaraṇye bhīmanandinīm ,
damayantīmathocuste tāpasāḥ satyavādinaḥ.
86. evam vilapatīm ekām araṇye bhīmanandinīm
damayantīm atha ūcuḥ te tāpasāḥ satyavādinaḥ
86. While she thus lamented alone in the forest, those truthful ascetics (tāpasa) spoke to Damayantī, the daughter of Bhīma.
उदर्कस्तव कल्याणि कल्याणो भविता शुभे ।
वयं पश्याम तपसा क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि नैषधम् ॥८७॥
87. udarkastava kalyāṇi kalyāṇo bhavitā śubhe ,
vayaṁ paśyāma tapasā kṣipraṁ drakṣyasi naiṣadham.
87. udarkaḥ tava kalyāṇi kalyāṇaḥ bhavitā śubhe
vayam paśyāma tapasā kṣipram drakṣyasi naiṣadham
87. O auspicious one (kalyāṇi), your future outcome will be prosperous, O beautiful lady (śubhe)! We perceive through our spiritual austerity (tapas) that you will soon see the king of Niṣadha.
निषधानामधिपतिं नलं रिपुनिघातिनम् ।
भैमि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं द्रक्ष्यसे विगतज्वरम् ॥८८॥
88. niṣadhānāmadhipatiṁ nalaṁ ripunighātinam ,
bhaimi dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ drakṣyase vigatajvaram.
88. niṣadhānām adhipatim nalam ripunighātinam bhaimi
dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭham drakṣyase vigatajvaram
88. O daughter of Bhīma (bhaimi), you will see Nala, the lord of the Niṣadha kingdom, the destroyer of enemies, and the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma), free from anxiety.
विमुक्तं सर्वपापेभ्यः सर्वरत्नसमन्वितम् ।
तदेव नगरश्रेष्ठं प्रशासन्तमरिंदमम् ॥८९॥
89. vimuktaṁ sarvapāpebhyaḥ sarvaratnasamanvitam ,
tadeva nagaraśreṣṭhaṁ praśāsantamariṁdamam.
89. vimuktam sarvapāpebhyaḥ sarvaratnasamanvitam
tat eva nagaraśreṣṭham praśāsantam arindamam
89. Freed from all sins, endowed with every kind of treasure, that supreme ruler of the city who governs and conquers his foes.
द्विषतां भयकर्तारं सुहृदां शोकनाशनम् ।
पतिं द्रक्ष्यसि कल्याणि कल्याणाभिजनं नृपम् ॥९०॥
90. dviṣatāṁ bhayakartāraṁ suhṛdāṁ śokanāśanam ,
patiṁ drakṣyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇābhijanaṁ nṛpam.
90. dviṣatām bhayakartāram suhṛdām śokanāśanam
patim drakṣyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇābhijanam nṛpam
90. O auspicious one, you will see your husband, the king, who instills fear in enemies, dispels the sorrow of friends, and is of noble lineage.
एवमुक्त्वा नलस्येष्टां महिषीं पार्थिवात्मजाम् ।
अन्तर्हितास्तापसास्ते साग्निहोत्राश्रमास्तदा ॥९१॥
91. evamuktvā nalasyeṣṭāṁ mahiṣīṁ pārthivātmajām ,
antarhitāstāpasāste sāgnihotrāśramāstadā.
91. evam uktvā nalasya iṣṭām mahiṣīm pārthiva ātmajām
antardhitāḥ tāpasāḥ te sa agnihotra āśramāḥ tadā
91. Having spoken thus to Nala's beloved queen, the king's daughter, those ascetics, along with their sacred fire rituals (yajña) and hermitages (āśrama), then vanished.
सा दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं विस्मिता अभवत्तदा ।
दमयन्त्यनवद्याङ्गी वीरसेननृपस्नुषा ॥९२॥
92. sā dṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṁ vismitā abhavattadā ,
damayantyanavadyāṅgī vīrasenanṛpasnuṣā.
92. sā dṛṣṭvā mahat āścaryam vismitā abhavat
tadā damayantī anavadyāṅgī vīrasenanṛpasnuṣā
92. Having witnessed that great wonder, Damayantī, whose form was flawless and who was the daughter-in-law of King Vīrasena, then became astonished.
किं नु स्वप्नो मया दृष्टः कोऽयं विधिरिहाभवत् ।
क्व नु ते तापसाः सर्वे क्व तदाश्रममण्डलम् ॥९३॥
93. kiṁ nu svapno mayā dṛṣṭaḥ ko'yaṁ vidhirihābhavat ,
kva nu te tāpasāḥ sarve kva tadāśramamaṇḍalam.
93. kim nu svapnaḥ mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kaḥ ayam vidhiḥ iha
abhavat kva nu te tāpasāḥ sarve kva tat āśramamaṇḍalam
93. What dream have I just seen? What kind of event (vidhi) has occurred here? Where, then, are all those ascetics, and where is that hermitage (āśrama) area?
क्व सा पुण्यजला रम्या नानाद्विजनिषेविता ।
नदी ते च नगा हृद्याः फलपुष्पोपशोभिताः ॥९४॥
94. kva sā puṇyajalā ramyā nānādvijaniṣevitā ,
nadī te ca nagā hṛdyāḥ phalapuṣpopaśobhitāḥ.

94. Where is that beautiful river with sacred waters, frequented by various birds? And where are those charming trees adorned with fruits and flowers?
ध्यात्वा चिरं भीमसुता दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता ।
भर्तृशोकपरा दीना विवर्णवदनाभवत् ॥९५॥
95. dhyātvā ciraṁ bhīmasutā damayantī śucismitā ,
bhartṛśokaparā dīnā vivarṇavadanābhavat.
95. dhyātvā ciram bhīmasutā damayantī śucismitā
bhartṛśokaparā dīnā vivarṇavadanā abhavat
95. Having engaged in deep contemplation (dhyāna) for a long time, Damayanti, the daughter of Bhima, with her pure smile, became distressed, absorbed in sorrow for her husband, and pale-faced.
सा गत्वाथापरां भूमिं बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा ।
विललापाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी दृष्ट्वाशोकतरुं ततः ॥९६॥
96. sā gatvāthāparāṁ bhūmiṁ bāṣpasaṁdigdhayā girā ,
vilalāpāśrupūrṇākṣī dṛṣṭvāśokataruṁ tataḥ.
96. sā gatvā atha aparām bhūmim bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā girā
vilalāpa aśrupūrṇākṣī dṛṣṭvā aśokatarum tataḥ
96. She, having then gone to another land, with eyes full of tears, lamented with a voice choked with emotion, after seeing an aśoka tree.
उपगम्य तरुश्रेष्ठमशोकं पुष्पितं तदा ।
पल्लवापीडितं हृद्यं विहंगैरनुनादितम् ॥९७॥
97. upagamya taruśreṣṭhamaśokaṁ puṣpitaṁ tadā ,
pallavāpīḍitaṁ hṛdyaṁ vihaṁgairanunāditam.
97. upagamya taruśreṣṭham aśokam puṣpitam tadā
pallavāpīḍitam hṛdyam vihaṅgaiḥ anunāditam
97. Then, she approached the excellent aśoka tree, which was in bloom, adorned with fresh sprouts, lovely to behold, and resonant with the chirping of birds.
अहो बतायमगमः श्रीमानस्मिन्वनान्तरे ।
आपीडैर्बहुभिर्भाति श्रीमान्द्रमिडराडिव ॥९८॥
98. aho batāyamagamaḥ śrīmānasminvanāntare ,
āpīḍairbahubhirbhāti śrīmāndramiḍarāḍiva.
98. aho bata ayam agamaḥ śrīmān asmin vanāntare
āpīḍaiḥ bahubhiḥ bhāti śrīmān dramiḍarāṭ iva
98. Oh, what a splendid tree this is in this forest grove! It shines with abundant blossoms, just like a magnificent Draviḍa king adorned with many ornaments.
विशोकां कुरु मां क्षिप्रमशोक प्रियदर्शन ।
वीतशोकभयाबाधं कच्चित्त्वं दृष्टवान्नृपम् ॥९९॥
99. viśokāṁ kuru māṁ kṣipramaśoka priyadarśana ,
vītaśokabhayābādhaṁ kaccittvaṁ dṛṣṭavānnṛpam.
99. viśokām kuru mām kṣipram aśoka priyadarśana
vītaśokabhayābādham kaccit tvam dṛṣṭavān nṛpam
99. O beautiful aśoka tree, quickly make me free from sorrow! I hope you have seen the king, who is free from sorrow, fear, and affliction?
नलं नामारिदमनं दमयन्त्याः प्रियं पतिम् ।
निषधानामधिपतिं दृष्टवानसि मे प्रियम् ॥१००॥
100. nalaṁ nāmāridamanaṁ damayantyāḥ priyaṁ patim ,
niṣadhānāmadhipatiṁ dṛṣṭavānasi me priyam.
100. nalam nāma aridamanam damayantyāḥ priyam patim
niṣadhānām adhipatim dṛṣṭavān asi me priyam
100. I hope you have seen my beloved, Nala by name, who is the subduer of enemies, Damayantī's dear husband, and the lord of the Niṣadhas.
एकवस्त्रार्धसंवीतं सुकुमारतनुत्वचम् ।
व्यसनेनार्दितं वीरमरण्यमिदमागतम् ॥१०१॥
101. ekavastrārdhasaṁvītaṁ sukumāratanutvacam ,
vyasanenārditaṁ vīramaraṇyamidamāgatam.
101. eka-vastra-ardha-saṃvītam sukumāra-tanutvacam
vyasanena arditam vīram araṇyam idam āgatam
101. This hero, clad in only half a garment, with a delicate body and skin, afflicted by great distress, has come to this forest.
यथा विशोका गच्छेयमशोकनग तत्कुरु ।
सत्यनामा भवाशोक मम शोकविनाशनात् ॥१०२॥
102. yathā viśokā gaccheyamaśokanaga tatkuru ,
satyanāmā bhavāśoka mama śokavināśanāt.
102. yathā viśokā gaccheyam aśokanaga tat kuru
satyanāmā bhava aśoka mama śoka-vināśanāt
102. O Aśoka tree, please make it so that I may become free from sorrow. O Aśoka, become true to your name by removing my grief.
एवं साशोकवृक्षं तमार्ता त्रिः परिगम्य ह ।
जगाम दारुणतरं देशं भैमी वराङ्गना ॥१०३॥
103. evaṁ sāśokavṛkṣaṁ tamārtā triḥ parigamya ha ,
jagāma dāruṇataraṁ deśaṁ bhaimī varāṅganā.
103. evam sā aśoka-vṛkṣam tam ārtā triḥ parigamya ha
jagāma dāruṇa-taram deśam bhaimī vara-aṅganā
103. Thus, that distressed excellent woman, Bhīmī, having three times circumambulated that Aśoka tree, went to an even more dreadful region.
सा ददर्श नगान्नैकान्नैकाश्च सरितस्तथा ।
नैकांश्च पर्वतान्रम्यान्नैकांश्च मृगपक्षिणः ॥१०४॥
104. sā dadarśa nagānnaikānnaikāśca saritastathā ,
naikāṁśca parvatānramyānnaikāṁśca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ.
104. sā dadarśa nagān naikān ca saritaḥ tathā naikān
ca parvatān ramyān naikān ca mṛga-pakṣiṇaḥ
104. She saw many trees, and many rivers too. Likewise, she saw many beautiful mountains, and numerous animals and birds.
कन्दरांश्च नितम्बांश्च नदांश्चाद्भुतदर्शनान् ।
ददर्श सा भीमसुता पतिमन्वेषती तदा ॥१०५॥
105. kandarāṁśca nitambāṁśca nadāṁścādbhutadarśanān ,
dadarśa sā bhīmasutā patimanveṣatī tadā.

dadarśa sā bhīmasutā patim anveṣatī tadā
105. Then, Bhīma's daughter, Damayantī, searching for her husband, saw caves, mountain slopes, and rivers, all of wondrous appearance.
गत्वा प्रकृष्टमध्वानं दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता ।
ददर्शाथ महासार्थं हस्त्यश्वरथसंकुलम् ॥१०६॥
106. gatvā prakṛṣṭamadhvānaṁ damayantī śucismitā ,
dadarśātha mahāsārthaṁ hastyaśvarathasaṁkulam.
106. gatvā prakṛṣṭam adhvānam damayantī śucismitā
dadarśa atha mahāsārtham hastyaśvarathasaṅkulam
106. After traveling a long distance, Damayantī, whose smile was pure, then saw a large caravan teeming with elephants, horses, and chariots.
उत्तरन्तं नदीं रम्यां प्रसन्नसलिलां शुभाम् ।
सुशीततोयां विस्तीर्णां ह्रदिनीं वेतसैर्वृताम् ॥१०७॥
107. uttarantaṁ nadīṁ ramyāṁ prasannasalilāṁ śubhām ,
suśītatoyāṁ vistīrṇāṁ hradinīṁ vetasairvṛtām.
107. uttarantaṃ nadīm ramyām prasannasalilām śubhām
suśītatoyām vistīrṇām hradīnīm vetasaiḥ vṛtām
107. She saw the caravan crossing a charming, auspicious river with clear, very cool, and wide waters, and surrounded by reeds.
प्रोद्घुष्टां क्रौञ्चकुररैश्चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम् ।
कूर्मग्राहझषाकीर्णां पुलिनद्वीपशोभिताम् ॥१०८॥
108. prodghuṣṭāṁ krauñcakuraraiścakravākopakūjitām ,
kūrmagrāhajhaṣākīrṇāṁ pulinadvīpaśobhitām.
108. prodghuṣṭām krauñcakuraraiḥ ca cakravākopakūjitām

108. The river was resonant with the calls of herons and curlews, melodious with the cooing of ruddy geese (cakravāka birds), teeming with turtles, alligators, and fish, and adorned with charming sandbanks and islands.
सा दृष्ट्वैव महासार्थं नलपत्नी यशस्विनी ।
उपसर्प्य वरारोहा जनमध्यं विवेश ह ॥१०९॥
109. sā dṛṣṭvaiva mahāsārthaṁ nalapatnī yaśasvinī ,
upasarpya varārohā janamadhyaṁ viveśa ha.

109. Seeing that large caravan, the renowned wife of Nala, who had beautiful hips, approached and entered among the people.
उन्मत्तरूपा शोकार्ता तथा वस्त्रार्धसंवृता ।
कृशा विवर्णा मलिना पांसुध्वस्तशिरोरुहा ॥११०॥
110. unmattarūpā śokārtā tathā vastrārdhasaṁvṛtā ,
kṛśā vivarṇā malinā pāṁsudhvastaśiroruhā.

110. She appeared deranged, afflicted by sorrow, partially covered by a single piece of cloth, thin, pale, soiled, and with her hair disheveled by dust.
तां दृष्ट्वा तत्र मनुजाः केचिद्भीताः प्रदुद्रुवुः ।
केचिच्चिन्तापरास्तस्थुः केचित्तत्र विचुक्रुशुः ॥१११॥
111. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā tatra manujāḥ kecidbhītāḥ pradudruvuḥ ,
keciccintāparāstasthuḥ kecittatra vicukruśuḥ.
111. tām dṛṣṭvā tatra manujāḥ kecit bhītāḥ pradudruvuḥ
kecit cintāparāḥ tasthuḥ kecit tatra vicukruśuḥ
111. Seeing her in that state, some people became frightened and ran away. Others stood there, lost in thought, while some cried out.
प्रहसन्ति स्म तां केचिदभ्यसूयन्त चापरे ।
चक्रुस्तस्यां दयां केचित्पप्रच्छुश्चापि भारत ॥११२॥
112. prahasanti sma tāṁ kecidabhyasūyanta cāpare ,
cakrustasyāṁ dayāṁ kecitpapracchuścāpi bhārata.
112. prahasanti sma tām kecit abhyasūyanta ca apare
cakruḥ tasyām dayām kecit papracchuḥ ca api bhārata
112. Some laughed at her, while others criticized her. Some, however, felt pity for her and questioned her, O Bharata.
कासि कस्यासि कल्याणि किं वा मृगयसे वने ।
त्वां दृष्ट्वा व्यथिताः स्मेह कच्चित्त्वमसि मानुषी ॥११३॥
113. kāsi kasyāsi kalyāṇi kiṁ vā mṛgayase vane ,
tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā vyathitāḥ smeha kaccittvamasi mānuṣī.
113. kā asi kasyā asi kalyāṇi kim vā mṛgayase vane tvām
dṛṣṭvā vyathitāḥ smaḥ iha kaccit tvam asi mānuṣī
113. O auspicious lady, who are you? Whose are you? Or what are you seeking in this forest? Having seen you, we are distressed. Are you, by any chance, a human woman?
वद सत्यं वनस्यास्य पर्वतस्याथ वा दिशः ।
देवता त्वं हि कल्याणि त्वां वयं शरणं गताः ॥११४॥
114. vada satyaṁ vanasyāsya parvatasyātha vā diśaḥ ,
devatā tvaṁ hi kalyāṇi tvāṁ vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ.
114. vada satyam vanasya asya parvatasya atha vā diśaḥ
devatā tvam hi kalyāṇi tvām vayam śaraṇam gatāḥ
114. O auspicious lady, tell us the truth: are you from this forest, or from this mountain, or from some region? Indeed, you are a deity, and we have come to you for refuge (śaraṇa).
यक्षी वा राक्षसी वा त्वमुताहोऽसि वराङ्गना ।
सर्वथा कुरु नः स्वस्ति रक्षस्वास्माननिन्दिते ॥११५॥
115. yakṣī vā rākṣasī vā tvamutāho'si varāṅganā ,
sarvathā kuru naḥ svasti rakṣasvāsmānanindite.
115. yakṣī vā rākṣasī vā tvam uta aho asi varāṅganā
sarvathā kuru naḥ svasti rakṣasva asmān anindite
115. Are you a Yakṣī, or a Rākṣasī, or perhaps a beautiful woman? By all means, grant us well-being (svasti) and protect us, O blameless one!
यथायं सर्वथा सार्थः क्षेमी शीघ्रमितो व्रजेत् ।
तथा विधत्स्व कल्याणि त्वां वयं शरणं गताः ॥११६॥
116. yathāyaṁ sarvathā sārthaḥ kṣemī śīghramito vrajet ,
tathā vidhatsva kalyāṇi tvāṁ vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ.
116. yathā ayam sarvathā sārthaḥ kṣemī śīghram itaḥ vrajet
tathā vidhatsva kalyāṇi tvām vayam śaraṇam gatāḥ
116. O auspicious lady, please arrange things so that this entire company of travelers may depart from here swiftly and safely. We have come to you for refuge (śaraṇa).
तथोक्ता तेन सार्थेन दमयन्ती नृपात्मजा ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः साध्वी भर्तृव्यसनदुःखिता ।
सार्थवाहं च सार्थं च जना ये चात्र केचन ॥११७॥
117. tathoktā tena sārthena damayantī nṛpātmajā ,
pratyuvāca tataḥ sādhvī bhartṛvyasanaduḥkhitā ,
sārthavāhaṁ ca sārthaṁ ca janā ye cātra kecana.
117. tathā uktā tena sārthena damayantī
nṛpa-ātmajā prati-uvāca tataḥ sādhvī
bhartṛ-vyasana-duḥkhitā sārthavāham
ca sārtham ca janāḥ ye ca atra kecana
117. The princess Damayantī, thus addressed by that caravan, then replied. The chaste woman, distressed by her husband's misfortune, spoke to the caravan leader, the caravan, and all the people who were there.
यूनः स्थविरबालाश्च सार्थस्य च पुरोगमाः ।
मानुषीं मां विजानीत मनुजाधिपतेः सुताम् ।
नृपस्नुषां राजभार्यां भर्तृदर्शनलालसाम् ॥११८॥
118. yūnaḥ sthavirabālāśca sārthasya ca purogamāḥ ,
mānuṣīṁ māṁ vijānīta manujādhipateḥ sutām ,
nṛpasnuṣāṁ rājabhāryāṁ bhartṛdarśanalālasām.
118. yūnaḥ sthavira-bālāḥ ca sāthasya ca
pura-gamāḥ mānuṣīm mām vijānīta
manu-ja-adhipateḥ sutām nṛpa-snuṣām
rāja-bhāryām bhartṛ-darśana-lālāsam
118. You, whether young, old, or children, and you, the leaders of this caravan, understand me to be a human woman, the daughter of a king (manujādhipati), the daughter-in-law of a king, a queen, and one who longs to see her husband.
विदर्भराण्मम पिता भर्ता राजा च नैषधः ।
नलो नाम महाभागस्तं मार्गाम्यपराजितम् ॥११९॥
119. vidarbharāṇmama pitā bhartā rājā ca naiṣadhaḥ ,
nalo nāma mahābhāgastaṁ mārgāmyaparājitam.
119. vidarbha-rāṭ mama pitā bhartā rājā ca naiṣadhaḥ
nalaḥ nāma mahā-bhāgaḥ tam mārgāmi aparājitam
119. My father is the king of Vidarbha, and my husband is Nala, the king of Niṣadha, who is highly fortunate. I am searching for him, the unconquered one.
यदि जानीत नृपतिं क्षिप्रं शंसत मे प्रियम् ।
नलं पार्थिवशार्दूलममित्रगणसूदनम् ॥१२०॥
120. yadi jānīta nṛpatiṁ kṣipraṁ śaṁsata me priyam ,
nalaṁ pārthivaśārdūlamamitragaṇasūdanam.
120. yadi jānīta nṛpatim kṣipram śaṃsata me priyam
nalam pārthiva-śārdūlam amitra-gaṇa-sūdanam
120. If you know my beloved king Nala - the tiger among rulers and the destroyer of enemy hordes - then quickly tell me about him.
तामुवाचानवद्याङ्गीं सार्थस्य महतः प्रभुः ।
सार्थवाहः शुचिर्नाम शृणु कल्याणि मद्वचः ॥१२१॥
121. tāmuvācānavadyāṅgīṁ sārthasya mahataḥ prabhuḥ ,
sārthavāhaḥ śucirnāma śṛṇu kalyāṇi madvacaḥ.
121. tām uvāca anavadyāṅgīm sārthasya mahataḥ prabhuḥ
sārthavāhaḥ śuciḥ nāma śṛṇu kalyāṇi mat vacaḥ
121. The leader of the great caravan, the caravan master named Śuci, said to that faultless-limbed woman, "O blessed one, listen to my words."
अहं सार्थस्य नेता वै सार्थवाहः शुचिस्मिते ।
मनुष्यं नलनामानं न पश्यामि यशस्विनि ॥१२२॥
122. ahaṁ sārthasya netā vai sārthavāhaḥ śucismite ,
manuṣyaṁ nalanāmānaṁ na paśyāmi yaśasvini.
122. aham sārthasya netā vai sārthavāhaḥ śucismite
manuṣyam nalanāmānam na paśyāmi yaśasvini
122. "O radiant-smiled one, I am indeed the leader of this caravan, the caravan master. O glorious one, I do not see the man named Nala."
कुञ्जरद्वीपिमहिषशार्दूलर्क्षमृगानपि ।
पश्याम्यस्मिन्वने कष्टे अमनुष्यनिषेविते ।
तथा नो यक्षराडद्य मणिभद्रः प्रसीदतु ॥१२३॥
123. kuñjaradvīpimahiṣaśārdūlarkṣamṛgānapi ,
paśyāmyasminvane kaṣṭe amanuṣyaniṣevite ,
tathā no yakṣarāḍadya maṇibhadraḥ prasīdatu.
123. kuñjaradvīpimahiṣaśārdūlarkṣamṛgān
api paśyāmi asmin vane kaṣṭe
amanuṣyaniṣevite tathā naḥ
yakṣarāṭ adya maṇibhadraḥ prasīdatu
123. In this difficult forest, inhabited by non-humans, I see elephants, panthers, buffaloes, tigers, bears, and other wild animals. May Maṇibhadra, the king of Yakṣas, be gracious to us today.
साब्रवीद्वणिजः सर्वान्सार्थवाहं च तं ततः ।
क्व नु यास्यसि सार्थोऽयमेतदाख्यातुमर्हथ ॥१२४॥
124. sābravīdvaṇijaḥ sarvānsārthavāhaṁ ca taṁ tataḥ ,
kva nu yāsyasi sārtho'yametadākhyātumarhatha.
124. sā abravīt vaṇijaḥ sarvān sārthavāham ca tam tataḥ
kva nu yāsyasi sārthaḥ ayam etat ākhyātum arhatha
124. Then she said to all the merchants and to that caravan master, "Where will this caravan go now? You ought to tell me this."
सार्थवाह उवाच ।
सार्थोऽयं चेदिराजस्य सुबाहोः सत्यवादिनः ।
क्षिप्रं जनपदं गन्ता लाभाय मनुजात्मजे ॥१२५॥
125. sārthavāha uvāca ,
sārtho'yaṁ cedirājasya subāhoḥ satyavādinaḥ ,
kṣipraṁ janapadaṁ gantā lābhāya manujātmaje.
125. sārthavāha uvāca | sārthaḥ ayam Cedirājasya Subāhoḥ
satyavādinaḥ | kṣipram janapadam gantā lābhāya manujātmaje
125. The caravan leader said: "This caravan belongs to Subāhu, the truthful king of Cedi. It will quickly reach its destination for profit, O daughter of man."
