कुन्त्युवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि पाण्डव ।
कृतमुद्धर्षणं पूर्वं मया वः सीदतां नृप ॥१॥
1. kuntyuvāca ,
evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi pāṇḍava ,
kṛtamuddharṣaṇaṁ pūrvaṁ mayā vaḥ sīdatāṁ nṛpa.
1. kuntī uvāca | evam etat mahā-bāho yathā vadasi pāṇḍava
| kṛtam uddharṣaṇam pūrvam mayā vaḥ sīdatām nṛpa
1. kuntī uvāca mahā-bāho pāṇḍava nṛpa,
yathā vadasi,
etat evam.
pūrvam uddharṣaṇam mayā vaḥ sīdatām kṛtam
1. Kunti said: 'O mighty-armed one, O Pāṇḍava, O king, what you say is indeed so. This outrage was done by me previously for you, who were suffering.'
द्यूतापहृतराज्यानां पतितानां सुखादपि ।
ज्ञातिभिः परिभूतानां कृतमुद्धर्षणं मया ॥२॥
2. dyūtāpahṛtarājyānāṁ patitānāṁ sukhādapi ,
jñātibhiḥ paribhūtānāṁ kṛtamuddharṣaṇaṁ mayā.
2. dyūtāpahṛtarājyānām patitānām sukhāt api
jñātibhiḥ paribhūtānām kṛtam uddharṣaṇam mayā
2. mayā dyūtāpahṛtarājyānām sukhāt api patitānām
jñātibhiḥ paribhūtānām uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
2. I have incited those whose kingdoms were stolen by gambling, who were deprived even of happiness, and who were humiliated by their kinsmen.
कथं पाण्डोर्न नश्येत संततिः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
यशश्च वो न नश्येत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥३॥
3. kathaṁ pāṇḍorna naśyeta saṁtatiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
yaśaśca vo na naśyeta iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
3. katham pāṇḍoḥ na naśyeta santatiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
yaśaḥ ca vaḥ na naśyeta iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
3. puruṣarṣabhāḥ,
pāṇḍoḥ santatiḥ katham na naśyeta? vaḥ yaśaḥ ca katham na naśyeta? iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
3. O foremost among men (puruṣarṣabhāḥ), how could the lineage of Pāṇḍu perish? And how could your renown not be lost? Thus, this encouragement was given.
यूयमिन्द्रसमाः सर्वे देवतुल्यपराक्रमाः ।
मा परेषां मुखप्रेक्षाः स्थेत्येवं तत्कृतं मया ॥४॥
4. yūyamindrasamāḥ sarve devatulyaparākramāḥ ,
mā pareṣāṁ mukhaprekṣāḥ sthetyevaṁ tatkṛtaṁ mayā.
4. yūyam indrasamāḥ sarve devatulyaparākramāḥ mā
pareṣām mukhaprekṣāḥ stha iti evam tat kṛtam mayā
4. yūyam sarve indrasamāḥ devatulyaparākramāḥ stha.
mā pareṣām mukhaprekṣāḥ stha iti evam tat mayā kṛtam
4. All of you are equal to Indra, possessing valor like the gods. 'Do not be dependent on others.' Thus, that was done by me.
कथं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो राजा त्वं वासवोपमः ।
पुनर्वने न दुःखी स्या इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭho rājā tvaṁ vāsavopamaḥ ,
punarvane na duḥkhī syā iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
5. katham dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭhaḥ rājā tvam vāsavopamaḥ
punaḥ vane na duḥkhī syāt iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
5. tvam dharmabhṛtām śreṣṭhaḥ vāsavopamaḥ rājā punaḥ
vane katham na duḥkhī syāt? iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
5. How could you, the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), a king comparable to Vāsava (Indra), again be unhappy in the forest? Thus, this encouragement was given.
नागायुतसमप्राणः ख्यातविक्रमपौरुषः ।
नायं भीमोऽत्ययं गच्छेदिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥६॥
6. nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ ,
nāyaṁ bhīmo'tyayaṁ gacchediti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
6. nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ na ayam
bhīmaḥ atyayam gacchet iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
6. ayam bhīmaḥ nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ
atyayam na gacchet iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
6. This Bhīma, who possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants and whose valor and heroism are renowned, should not meet with calamity. With this sentiment, encouragement was given.
भीमसेनादवरजस्तथायं वासवोपमः ।
विजयो नावसीदेत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥७॥
7. bhīmasenādavarajastathāyaṁ vāsavopamaḥ ,
vijayo nāvasīdeta iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
7. bhīmasenāt avarajaḥ tathā ayam vāsavopamaḥ
vijayaḥ na avasīdet iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
7. tathā ayam vijayaḥ bhīmasenāt avarajaḥ
vāsavopamaḥ na avasīdet iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
7. Similarly, this Vijaya (Arjuna), younger than Bhīmasena and comparable to Indra, should not become despondent. With this sentiment, encouragement was given.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च तथेमौ गुरुवर्तिनौ ।
क्षुधा कथं न सीदेतामिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥८॥
8. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca tathemau guruvartinau ,
kṣudhā kathaṁ na sīdetāmiti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
8. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca tathā imau guru-vartinau
kṣudhā katham na sīdetām iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
8. tathā imau nakulaḥ ca sahadevaḥ guru-vartinau
kṣudhā katham na sīdetām iti ca uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
8. And these two, Nakula and Sahadeva, who are obedient to their elders, how could they possibly suffer from hunger? Thus, encouragement was given.
इयं च बृहती श्यामा श्रीमत्यायतलोचना ।
वृथा सभातले क्लिष्टा मा भूदिति च तत्कृतम् ॥९॥
9. iyaṁ ca bṛhatī śyāmā śrīmatyāyatalocanā ,
vṛthā sabhātale kliṣṭā mā bhūditi ca tatkṛtam.
9. iyam ca bṛhatī śyāmā śrīmatyāyatalocanā vṛthā
sabhā-tale kliṣṭā mā bhūt iti ca tat kṛtam
9. ca iyam bṛhatī śyāmā śrīmatyāyatalocanā vṛthā
sabhā-tale kliṣṭā mā bhūt iti ca tat kṛtam
9. And this tall, dark-complexioned, glorious woman with long eyes (Draupadī) should not have been troubled in vain on the assembly floor. For this reason, that (encouragement) was also given.
प्रेक्षन्त्या मे तदा हीमां वेपन्तीं कदलीमिव ।
स्त्रीधर्मिणीमनिन्द्याङ्गीं तथा द्यूतपराजिताम् ॥१०॥
10. prekṣantyā me tadā hīmāṁ vepantīṁ kadalīmiva ,
strīdharmiṇīmanindyāṅgīṁ tathā dyūtaparājitām.
10. prekṣantyā me tadā hi imām vepantīm kadalīm iva
strīdharmiṇīm anindyāṅgīm tathā dyūtapārājitām
10. Then, as I watched her - trembling like a plantain tree, being in her menstrual period, of blameless body, and defeated in gambling -
दुःशासनो यदा मौढ्याद्दासीवत्पर्यकर्षत ।
तदैव विदितं मह्यं पराभूतमिदं कुलम् ॥११॥
11. duḥśāsano yadā mauḍhyāddāsīvatparyakarṣata ,
tadaiva viditaṁ mahyaṁ parābhūtamidaṁ kulam.
11. duḥśāsanaḥ yadā mauḍhyāt dāsīvat paryakarṣata
tadā eva viditam mahyam parābhūtam idam kulam
11. - when Duḥśāsana, out of foolishness, dragged her like a maidservant, it was then that I knew this entire family was disgraced.
विषण्णाः कुरवश्चैव तदा मे श्वशुरादयः ।
यदैषा नाथमिच्छन्ती व्यलपत्कुररी यथा ॥१२॥
12. viṣaṇṇāḥ kuravaścaiva tadā me śvaśurādayaḥ ,
yadaiṣā nāthamicchantī vyalapatkurarī yathā.
12. viṣaṇṇāḥ kuravaḥ ca eva tadā me śvaśurādayaḥ
yadā eṣā nātham icchantī vyalapat kurarī yathā
12. And at that time, my fathers-in-law and the Kurus themselves were distressed, when she, longing for a protector, wailed like a curlew.
केशपक्षे परामृष्टा पापेन हतबुद्धिना ।
यदा दुःशासनेनैषा तदा मुह्याम्यहं नृप ॥१३॥
13. keśapakṣe parāmṛṣṭā pāpena hatabuddhinā ,
yadā duḥśāsanenaiṣā tadā muhyāmyahaṁ nṛpa.
13. keśapakṣe parāmṛṣṭā pāpena hatabuddhinā
yadā duḥśāsanena eṣā tadā muhyāmi aham nṛpa
13. O King, when this woman was roughly handled by her hair by that wicked, foolish Duḥśāsana, then I become utterly bewildered.
युष्मत्तेजोविवृद्ध्यर्थं मया ह्युद्धर्षणं कृतम् ।
तदानीं विदुरावाक्यैरिति तद्वित्त पुत्रकाः ॥१४॥
14. yuṣmattejovivṛddhyarthaṁ mayā hyuddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ,
tadānīṁ vidurāvākyairiti tadvitta putrakāḥ.
14. yuṣmattejo vivṛddhyartham mayā hi uddharṣaṇam
kṛtam tadānīm vidurāvākyaiḥ iti tat vitta putrakāḥ
14. putrakāḥ mayā hi yuṣmattejo vivṛddhyartham
uddharṣaṇam kṛtam tadānīm vidurāvākyaiḥ iti tat vitta
14. Indeed, I created this incitement for the purpose of increasing your brilliance. Know this, O sons, that at that time, it was on account of Vidura's words.
कथं न राजवंशोऽयं नश्येत्प्राप्य सुतान्मम ।
पाण्डोरिति मया पुत्र तस्मादुद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. kathaṁ na rājavaṁśo'yaṁ naśyetprāpya sutānmama ,
pāṇḍoriti mayā putra tasmāduddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam.
15. katham na rājavaṃśaḥ ayam naśyet prāpya sutān mama
pāṇḍoḥ iti mayā putra tasmāt uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
15. putra ayam rājavaṃśaḥ mama sutān prāpya pāṇḍoḥ
katham na naśyet iti tasmāt mayā uddharṣaṇam kṛtam
15. O son, how could this royal lineage not perish, even after having received my sons as heirs, if it were to be governed by Pandu's line? It was with this understanding that I caused this incitement.
न तस्य पुत्रः पौत्रौ वा कुत एव स पार्थिव ।
लभते सुकृताँल्लोकान्यस्माद्वंशः प्रणश्यति ॥१६॥
16. na tasya putraḥ pautrau vā kuta eva sa pārthiva ,
labhate sukṛtāँllokānyasmādvaṁśaḥ praṇaśyati.
16. na tasya putraḥ pautrau vā kutaḥ eva saḥ pārthiva
labhate sukṛtān lokān yasmāt vaṃśaḥ praṇaśyati
16. yasmāt vaṃśaḥ praṇaśyati tasya putraḥ vā pautrau vā na
labhate saḥ pārthiva eva kutaḥ sukṛtān lokān labhate
16. Neither his son nor his grandson, indeed how could that king himself, attain the worlds earned by good deeds, if his lineage perishes?
भुक्तं राज्यफलं पुत्रा भर्तुर्मे विपुलं पुरा ।
महादानानि दत्तानि पीतः सोमो यथाविधि ॥१७॥
17. bhuktaṁ rājyaphalaṁ putrā bharturme vipulaṁ purā ,
mahādānāni dattāni pītaḥ somo yathāvidhi.
17. bhuktam rājyaphalam putrā bhartuḥ me vipulam
purā mahādānāni dattāni pītaḥ somaḥ yathāvidhi
17. putrā me bhartuḥ vipulam rājyaphalam purā
bhuktam mahādānāni dattāni yathāvidhi somaḥ pītaḥ
17. O sons, the abundant fruit of sovereignty was enjoyed by my husband long ago. Great gifts were given, and Soma (soma) was drunk according to the proper rites.
साहं नात्मफलार्थं वै वासुदेवमचूचुदम् ।
विदुरायाः प्रलापैस्तैः प्लावनार्थं तु तत्कृतम् ॥१८॥
18. sāhaṁ nātmaphalārthaṁ vai vāsudevamacūcudam ,
vidurāyāḥ pralāpaistaiḥ plāvanārthaṁ tu tatkṛtam.
18. sā aham na ātmaphalārtham vai vāsudevam acūcudam
vidurāyāḥ pralāpaiḥ taiḥ plāvanārtham tu tat kṛtam
18. sā aham vāsudevam ātmaphalārtham na acūcudam vai; tat vidurāyāḥ taiḥ pralāpaiḥ plāvanārtham tu kṛtam.
18. Indeed, I did not incite Vāsudeva for my own benefit. Rather, that action was taken to overwhelm (the enemies), prompted by those lamentations of Vidurā.
नाहं राज्यफलं पुत्र कामये पुत्रनिर्जितम् ।
पतिलोकानहं पुण्यान्कामये तपसा विभो ॥१९॥
19. nāhaṁ rājyaphalaṁ putra kāmaye putranirjitam ,
patilokānahaṁ puṇyānkāmaye tapasā vibho.
19. na aham rājyaphalam putra kāmaye putranirjitam
patilokān aham puṇyān kāmaye tapasā vibho
19. putra,
aham putranirjitam rājyaphalam na kāmaye.
vibho,
aham puṇyān patilokān tapasā kāmaye.
19. O son, I do not desire the rewards of a kingdom that has been conquered by my sons. O lord, I indeed desire the meritorious worlds of devoted wives through spiritual austerity (tapas).
श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः कृत्वा शुश्रूषां वनवासिनोः ।
तपसा शोषयिष्यामि युधिष्ठिर कलेवरम् ॥२०॥
20. śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ kṛtvā śuśrūṣāṁ vanavāsinoḥ ,
tapasā śoṣayiṣyāmi yudhiṣṭhira kalevaram.
20. śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ kṛtvā śuśrūṣām vanavāsinoḥ
tapasā śoṣayiṣyāmi yudhiṣṭhira kalevaram
20. yudhiṣṭhira,
vanavāsinoḥ śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ śuśrūṣām kṛtvā,
tapasā kalevaram śoṣayiṣyāmi.
20. O Yudhishthira, having performed service to my mother-in-law and father-in-law, who are dwelling in the forest, I will emaciate my body through spiritual austerity (tapas).
निवर्तस्व कुरुश्रेष्ठ भीमसेनादिभिः सह ।
धर्मे ते धीयतां बुद्धिर्मनस्ते महदस्तु च ॥२१॥
21. nivartasva kuruśreṣṭha bhīmasenādibhiḥ saha ,
dharme te dhīyatāṁ buddhirmanaste mahadastu ca.
21. nivartasva kuruśreṣṭha bhīmasenādibhiḥ saha
dharme te dhīyatām buddhiḥ manaḥ te mahat astu ca
21. kuruśreṣṭha,
bhīmasenādibhiḥ saha nivartasva.
te buddhiḥ dharme dhīyatām ca,
te manaḥ mahat astu.
21. O best of the Kurus, return with Bhīmasena and the others. Let your intellect be directed towards your natural law (dharma), and let your mind be noble.
