युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
स्त्रीणां स्वभावमिच्छामि श्रोतुं भरतसत्तम ।
स्त्रियो हि मूलं दोषाणां लघुचित्ताः पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
strīṇāṁ svabhāvamicchāmi śrotuṁ bharatasattama ,
striyo hi mūlaṁ doṣāṇāṁ laghucittāḥ pitāmaha.

1. Yudhishthira said: 'O best among the Bhāratas, I wish to hear about the nature of women. Indeed, women are the origin of flaws, O grandfather, for they are fickle-minded.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
नारदस्य च संवादं पुंश्चल्या पञ्चचूडया ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
nāradasya ca saṁvādaṁ puṁścalyā pañcacūḍayā.
2. bhīṣma uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam nāradasya ca saṁvādam puṁścalyā pañcacūḍayā

2. Bhishma said: 'In this context, they also recount this ancient narrative (itihāsa) – the conversation between Nārada and the unchaste woman, Pañcacūḍā.'
लोकाननुचरन्धीमान्देवर्षिर्नारदः पुरा ।
ददर्शाप्सरसं ब्राह्मीं पञ्चचूडामनिन्दिताम् ॥३॥
3. lokānanucarandhīmāndevarṣirnāradaḥ purā ,
dadarśāpsarasaṁ brāhmīṁ pañcacūḍāmaninditām.
3. lokān anucaran dhīmān devapṛṣṭaḥ nāradaḥ purā
dadarśa apsarasam brāhmīm pañcacūḍām aninditām
3. purā dhīmān devarṣiḥ nāradaḥ lokān anucaran

3. Formerly, the wise divine sage (devarṣi) Nārada, while traversing the worlds, beheld the faultless divine apsara, Pañcacūḍā.
तां दृष्ट्वा चारुसर्वाङ्गीं पप्रच्छाप्सरसं मुनिः ।
संशयो हृदि मे कश्चित्तन्मे ब्रूहि सुमध्यमे ॥४॥
4. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīṁ papracchāpsarasaṁ muniḥ ,
saṁśayo hṛdi me kaścittanme brūhi sumadhyame.
4. tām dṛṣṭvā cārusarvāṅgīm papraccha apsarasam muniḥ
saṃśayaḥ hṛdi me kaścit tat me brūhi sumadhyame
4. muniḥ cārusarvāṅgīm tām apsarasam dṛṣṭvā papraccha (abravīt)
he sumadhyame me hṛdi kaścit saṃśayaḥ asti tat me brūhi
4. The sage, upon seeing her, who was beautiful in all her limbs, asked the celestial nymph: "I have a certain doubt in my heart; please tell me about it, O slender-waisted one."
एवमुक्ता तु सा विप्रं प्रत्युवाचाथ नारदम् ।
विषये सति वक्ष्यामि समर्थां मन्यसे च माम् ॥५॥
5. evamuktā tu sā vipraṁ pratyuvācātha nāradam ,
viṣaye sati vakṣyāmi samarthāṁ manyase ca mām.
5. evam uktā tu sā vipram pratyuvāca atha nāradam
viṣaye sati vakṣyāmi samarthām manyase ca mām

5. Having been addressed in this manner, she then replied to the brāhmaṇa Nārada: "I will speak if there is a suitable topic, and if you consider me capable."
नारद उवाच ।
न त्वामविषये भद्रे नियोक्ष्यामि कथंचन ।
स्त्रीणां स्वभावमिच्छामि त्वत्तः श्रोतुं वरानने ॥६॥
6. nārada uvāca ,
na tvāmaviṣaye bhadre niyokṣyāmi kathaṁcana ,
strīṇāṁ svabhāvamicchāmi tvattaḥ śrotuṁ varānane.
6. nārada uvāca na tvām aviṣaye bhadre niyokṣyāmi kathaṃcana
strīṇām svabhāvam icchāmi tvattaḥ śrotum varānane
6. nāradaḥ uvāca he bhadre he varānane
aham tvām aviṣaye kathaṃcana na
niyokṣyāmi (kintu) aham tvattaḥ
strīṇām svabhāvam śrotum icchāmi
6. Nārada said: "O noble lady, I will certainly not ask you about an inappropriate subject. O beautiful-faced one, I wish to hear from you about the intrinsic nature (svabhāva) of women."
भीष्म उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य देवर्षेरप्सरोत्तमा ।
प्रत्युवाच न शक्ष्यामि स्त्री सती निन्दितुं स्त्रियः ॥७॥
7. bhīṣma uvāca ,
etacchrutvā vacastasya devarṣerapsarottamā ,
pratyuvāca na śakṣyāmi strī satī nindituṁ striyaḥ.
7. bhīṣma uvāca etat śrutvā vacaḥ tasya devarṣeḥ apsaras
uttamā pratyuvāca na śakṣyāmi strī satī ninditum striyaḥ
7. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca (yat) tasya devarṣeḥ
vacaḥ etat śrutvā apsarasām uttamā
pratyuvāca (abravīt yat) aham strī
satī striyaḥ ninditum na śakṣyāmi
7. Bhīṣma said: "Having heard these words of that divine sage, the foremost celestial nymph replied: 'As I am a woman myself, I will not be able to criticize other women.'"
विदितास्ते स्त्रियो याश्च यादृशाश्च स्वभावतः ।
न मामर्हसि देवर्षे नियोक्तुं प्रश्न ईदृशे ॥८॥
8. viditāste striyo yāśca yādṛśāśca svabhāvataḥ ,
na māmarhasi devarṣe niyoktuṁ praśna īdṛśe.
8. viditāḥ te striyaḥ yāḥ ca yādṛśāḥ ca svabhāvataḥ
na mām arhasi devarṣe niyoktum praśne īdṛśe
8. devarṣe,
te striyaḥ yāḥ ca yādṛśāḥ ca svabhāvataḥ viditāḥ.
mām īdṛśe praśne niyoktum na arhasi.
8. You know these women and their true nature. Therefore, O divine sage, you should not assign me to answer such a question.
तामुवाच स देवर्षिः सत्यं वद सुमध्यमे ।
मृषावादे भवेद्दोषः सत्ये दोषो न विद्यते ॥९॥
9. tāmuvāca sa devarṣiḥ satyaṁ vada sumadhyame ,
mṛṣāvāde bhaveddoṣaḥ satye doṣo na vidyate.
9. tām uvāca saḥ devarṣiḥ satyam vada sumadhyame
mṛṣāvāde bhavet doṣaḥ satye doṣaḥ na vidyate
9. saḥ devarṣiḥ tām uvāca,
"sumadhyame,
satyam vada.
mṛṣāvāde doṣaḥ bhavet,
satye doṣaḥ na vidyate.
"
9. That divine sage (devarṣi) said to her: 'O beautiful lady, speak the truth. There is a flaw in speaking falsehood, but no flaw exists in speaking the truth.'
इत्युक्ता सा कृतमतिरभवच्चारुहासिनी ।
स्त्रीदोषाञ्शाश्वतान्सत्यान्भाषितुं संप्रचक्रमे ॥१०॥
10. ityuktā sā kṛtamatirabhavaccāruhāsinī ,
strīdoṣāñśāśvatānsatyānbhāṣituṁ saṁpracakrame.
10. iti uktā sā kṛtamatiḥ abhavat cāruhāsinī
strīdoṣān śāśvatān satyān bhāṣitum sampracakrame
10. iti uktā sā cāruhāsinī kṛtamatiḥ abhavat.
(sā) śāśvatān satyān strīdoṣān bhāṣitum sampracakrame.
10. Being spoken to in this manner, that beautifully smiling lady resolved to speak. She then began to relate the eternal and inherent flaws of women.
पञ्चचूडोवाच ।
कुलीना रूपवत्यश्च नाथवत्यश्च योषितः ।
मर्यादासु न तिष्ठन्ति स दोषः स्त्रीषु नारद ॥११॥
11. pañcacūḍovāca ,
kulīnā rūpavatyaśca nāthavatyaśca yoṣitaḥ ,
maryādāsu na tiṣṭhanti sa doṣaḥ strīṣu nārada.
11. pañcacūḍā uvāca kulīnāḥ rūpavatyaḥ ca nāthavatyaḥ ca
yoṣitaḥ maryādāsu na tiṣṭhanti saḥ doṣaḥ strīṣu nārada
11. pañcacūḍā uvāca: nārada,
kulīnāḥ rūpavatyaḥ ca nāthavatyaḥ ca yoṣitaḥ maryādāsu na tiṣṭhanti.
strīṣu saḥ doṣaḥ.
11. Pañcacūḍā said: 'Women, even those from noble families, who are beautiful, and who have husbands, do not adhere to proper conduct (maryādā). That is the fundamental flaw in women, O Nārada.'
न स्त्रीभ्यः किंचिदन्यद्वै पापीयस्तरमस्ति वै ।
स्त्रियो हि मूलं दोषाणां तथा त्वमपि वेत्थ ह ॥१२॥
12. na strībhyaḥ kiṁcidanyadvai pāpīyastaramasti vai ,
striyo hi mūlaṁ doṣāṇāṁ tathā tvamapi vettha ha.
12. na strībhyah kimcit anyat vai pāpīyastaram asti vai
striyah hi mūlam doṣāṇām tathā tvam api vettha ha
12. Indeed, there is nothing worse than women. Women are truly the root of all faults, and you too know this.
समाज्ञातानृद्धिमतः प्रतिरूपान्वशे स्थितान् ।
पतीनन्तरमासाद्य नालं नार्यः प्रतीक्षितुम् ॥१३॥
13. samājñātānṛddhimataḥ pratirūpānvaśe sthitān ,
patīnantaramāsādya nālaṁ nāryaḥ pratīkṣitum.
13. samājñātān ṛddhimatah pratirūpān vaśe sthitān
patīn anantaram āsādya na alam nāryah pratīkṣitum
13. Women are unable to wait, even after approaching husbands who are well-known, prosperous, handsome, and devoted to them.
असद्धर्मस्त्वयं स्त्रीणामस्माकं भवति प्रभो ।
पापीयसो नरान्यद्वै लज्जां त्यक्त्वा भजामहे ॥१४॥
14. asaddharmastvayaṁ strīṇāmasmākaṁ bhavati prabho ,
pāpīyaso narānyadvai lajjāṁ tyaktvā bhajāmahe.
14. asat dharmah tu ayam strīṇām asmākam bhavati prabho
pāpīyasah narān anyat vai lajjām tyaktvā bhajāmahe
14. O Lord, this is truly our (women's) corrupt intrinsic nature (dharma), that abandoning all shame, we resort to other, more wicked men.
स्त्रियं हि यः प्रार्थयते संनिकर्षं च गच्छति ।
ईषच्च कुरुते सेवां तमेवेच्छन्ति योषितः ॥१५॥
15. striyaṁ hi yaḥ prārthayate saṁnikarṣaṁ ca gacchati ,
īṣacca kurute sevāṁ tamevecchanti yoṣitaḥ.
15. striyam hi yah prārthayate sannikarṣam ca gacchati
īṣat ca kurute sevām tam eva icchanti yoṣitah
15. Indeed, the man who woos a woman and approaches her, and offers even a little service, him alone women desire.
अनर्थित्वान्मनुष्याणां भयात्परिजनस्य च ।
मर्यादायाममर्यादाः स्त्रियस्तिष्ठन्ति भर्तृषु ॥१६॥
16. anarthitvānmanuṣyāṇāṁ bhayātparijanasya ca ,
maryādāyāmamaryādāḥ striyastiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu.
16. anarthitvāt manuṣyāṇām bhayāt parijanasya ca
maryādāyām amaryādāḥ striyaḥ tiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu
16. amaryādāḥ striyaḥ anarthitvāt manuṣyāṇām ca
bhayāt parijanasya maryādāyām bhartṛṣu tiṣṭhanti
16. Unrestrained women stay within the bounds of propriety with their husbands due to men's lack of purpose (or means), and out of fear of their family members.
नासां कश्चिदगम्योऽस्ति नासां वयसि संस्थितिः ।
विरूपं रूपवन्तं वा पुमानित्येव भुञ्जते ॥१७॥
17. nāsāṁ kaścidagamyo'sti nāsāṁ vayasi saṁsthitiḥ ,
virūpaṁ rūpavantaṁ vā pumānityeva bhuñjate.
17. na āsām kaścit agamyaḥ asti na āsām vayasi saṃsthitiḥ
virūpam rūpavantam vā pumān iti eva bhuñjate
17. āsām kaścit agamyaḥ na asti āsām vayasi saṃsthitiḥ
na virūpam vā rūpavantam pumān iti eva bhuñjate
17. For these women, no man is inaccessible; for them, there is no fixed restriction regarding age. They enjoy any man, whether ugly or handsome, just because he is a male.
न भयान्नाप्यनुक्रोशान्नार्थहेतोः कथंचन ।
न ज्ञातिकुलसंबन्धात्स्त्रियस्तिष्ठन्ति भर्तृषु ॥१८॥
18. na bhayānnāpyanukrośānnārthahetoḥ kathaṁcana ,
na jñātikulasaṁbandhātstriyastiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu.
18. na bhayāt na api anukrośāt na arthahetoḥ kathaṃcana
na jñātikulasambandhāt striyaḥ tiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu
18. striyaḥ bhartṛṣu na bhayāt na api anukrośāt na
arthahetoḥ kathaṃcana na jñātikulasambandhāt tiṣṭhanti
18. Women do not stay with their husbands out of fear, nor out of compassion, nor for the sake of any material benefit, nor due to family or kinship connections, by any means.
यौवने वर्तमानानां मृष्टाभरणवाससाम् ।
नारीणां स्वैरवृत्तानां स्पृहयन्ति कुलस्त्रियः ॥१९॥
19. yauvane vartamānānāṁ mṛṣṭābharaṇavāsasām ,
nārīṇāṁ svairavṛttānāṁ spṛhayanti kulastriyaḥ.
19. yauvane vartamānānām mṛṣṭābharaṇavāsasām
nārīṇām svairavṛttānām spṛhayanti kulastriyaḥ
19. kulastriyaḥ yauvane vartamānānām mṛṣṭābharaṇavāsasām
svairavṛttānām nārīṇām spṛhayanti
19. Women of good family envy those women who are in the prime of their youth, adorned with clean ornaments and clothes, and lead a self-willed life.
याश्च शश्वद्बहुमता रक्ष्यन्ते दयिताः स्त्रियः ।
अपि ताः संप्रसज्जन्ते कुब्जान्धजडवामनैः ॥२०॥
20. yāśca śaśvadbahumatā rakṣyante dayitāḥ striyaḥ ,
api tāḥ saṁprasajjante kubjāndhajaḍavāmanaiḥ.
20. yāḥ ca śaśvat bahumatāḥ rakṣyante dayitāḥ striyaḥ
api tāḥ saṃprasajjante kubjāndhajaḍavāmanaiḥ
20. śaśvat bahumatāḥ dayitāḥ striyaḥ yāḥ ca rakṣyante,
tāḥ api kubjāndhajaḍavāmanaiḥ saṃprasajjante
20. Even those women who are always highly esteemed, beloved, and protected, will attach themselves to hunchbacks, blind men, imbeciles, and dwarfs.
पङ्गुष्वपि च देवर्षे ये चान्ये कुत्सिता नराः ।
स्त्रीणामगम्यो लोकेऽस्मिन्नास्ति कश्चिन्महामुने ॥२१॥
21. paṅguṣvapi ca devarṣe ye cānye kutsitā narāḥ ,
strīṇāmagamyo loke'sminnāsti kaścinmahāmune.
21. paṅguṣu api ca devarṣe ye ca anye kutsitāḥ narāḥ
strīṇām agamyah loke asmin na asti kaścit mahāmune
21. devarṣe mahāmune,
asmin loke paṅguṣu api ca,
ye anye kutsitāḥ narāḥ ca (santi),
strīṇām agamyah kaścit na asti
21. O divine sage (devarṣi), O great sage (mahāmuni), in this world, even among the crippled and other despised men, there is no one whom women would consider unapproachable.
यदि पुंसां गतिर्ब्रह्म कथंचिन्नोपपद्यते ।
अप्यन्योन्यं प्रवर्तन्ते न हि तिष्ठन्ति भर्तृषु ॥२२॥
22. yadi puṁsāṁ gatirbrahma kathaṁcinnopapadyate ,
apyanyonyaṁ pravartante na hi tiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu.
22. yadi puṃsām gatiḥ brahma kathaṃcit na upapadyate
api anyonyam pravartante na hi tiṣṭhanti bhartṛṣu
22. yadi puṃsām brahma-gatiḥ kathaṃcit na upapadyate,
(tataḥ) anyonyam pravartante,
hi na bhartṛṣu tiṣṭhanti
22. If men's adherence to (brahman), their proper spiritual path, is somehow not maintained, then women will engage in relations with other men, for they certainly do not remain faithful to their husbands.
अलाभात्पुरुषाणां हि भयात्परिजनस्य च ।
वधबन्धभयाच्चापि स्वयं गुप्ता भवन्ति ताः ॥२३॥
23. alābhātpuruṣāṇāṁ hi bhayātparijanasya ca ,
vadhabandhabhayāccāpi svayaṁ guptā bhavanti tāḥ.
23. alābhāt puruṣāṇām hi bhayāt parijanasya ca
vadhabandhabhayāt ca api svayam guptāḥ bhavanti tāḥ
23. hi,
puruṣāṇām alābhāt,
ca parijanasya bhayāt,
ca api vadhabandhabhayāt,
tāḥ svayam guptāḥ bhavanti
23. Indeed, it is due to the unavailability of men (puruṣa), and the fear of their family members, as well as the fear of punishment by death or imprisonment, that those women guard themselves.
चलस्वभावा दुःसेव्या दुर्ग्राह्या भावतस्तथा ।
प्राज्ञस्य पुरुषस्येह यथा वाचस्तथा स्त्रियः ॥२४॥
24. calasvabhāvā duḥsevyā durgrāhyā bhāvatastathā ,
prājñasya puruṣasyeha yathā vācastathā striyaḥ.
24. cala-svabhāvā duḥsevyā durgrahyā bhāvataḥ tathā
prājñasya puruṣasya iha yathā vācaḥ tathā striyaḥ
24. In this world, for a wise man, women are like words: fickle by nature, difficult to manage, and hard to understand in their true essence.
नाग्निस्तृप्यति काष्ठानां नापगानां महोदधिः ।
नान्तकः सर्वभूतानां न पुंसां वामलोचनाः ॥२५॥
25. nāgnistṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṁ nāpagānāṁ mahodadhiḥ ,
nāntakaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ na puṁsāṁ vāmalocanāḥ.
25. na agniḥ tṛpyati kāṣṭhānām na apagānām mahodadhiḥ
na antakaḥ sarvabhūtānām na puṃsām vāmalocanāḥ
25. Fire is never satisfied by firewood, nor is the great ocean by rivers. Death (antaka) is never satisfied by all creatures, nor are beautiful-eyed women by men.
इदमन्यच्च देवर्षे रहस्यं सर्वयोषिताम् ।
दृष्ट्वैव पुरुषं हृद्यं योनिः प्रक्लिद्यते स्त्रियः ॥२६॥
26. idamanyacca devarṣe rahasyaṁ sarvayoṣitām ,
dṛṣṭvaiva puruṣaṁ hṛdyaṁ yoniḥ praklidyate striyaḥ.
26. idam anyat ca devarṣe rahasyam sarvayoṣitām dṛṣṭvā
eva puruṣam hṛdyam yoniḥ prakilidyate striyaḥ
26. And this, O divine sage (devarṣi), is another secret of all women: merely upon seeing an attractive man, a woman's (yoni) becomes moist.
कामानामपि दातारं कर्तारं मानसान्त्वयोः ।
रक्षितारं न मृष्यन्ति भर्तारं परमं स्त्रियः ॥२७॥
27. kāmānāmapi dātāraṁ kartāraṁ mānasāntvayoḥ ,
rakṣitāraṁ na mṛṣyanti bhartāraṁ paramaṁ striyaḥ.
27. kāmānām api dātāram kartāram mānasasāntvayoḥ
rakṣitāram na mṛṣyanti bhartāram paramam striyaḥ
27. Women do not tolerate a husband (bhartṛ), even if he grants their desires, provides mental solace, and is their supreme protector.
न कामभोगान्बहुलान्नालंकारार्थसंचयान् ।
तथैव बहु मन्यन्ते यथा रत्यामनुग्रहम् ॥२८॥
28. na kāmabhogānbahulānnālaṁkārārthasaṁcayān ,
tathaiva bahu manyante yathā ratyāmanugraham.
28. na kāma-bhogān bahulān na alaṅkārārtha-saṃcayān
tathā eva bahu manyante yathā ratyām anugraham
28. (janāḥ) bahulān kāma-bhogān na bahu manyante,
na ca alaṅkārārtha-saṃcayān (bahu manyante),
tathā eva yathā ratyām anugraham bahu manyante
28. People do not value abundant sensual pleasures or vast accumulations of wealth for ornaments as highly as they value a kindness or favor shown in a loving relationship.
अन्तकः शमनो मृत्युः पातालं वडवामुखम् ।
क्षुरधारा विषं सर्पो वह्निरित्येकतः स्त्रियः ॥२९॥
29. antakaḥ śamano mṛtyuḥ pātālaṁ vaḍavāmukham ,
kṣuradhārā viṣaṁ sarpo vahnirityekataḥ striyaḥ.
29. antakaḥ śamanaḥ mṛtyuḥ pātālam vaḍavāmukham
kṣuradhārā viṣam sarpaḥ vahniḥ iti ekataḥ striyaḥ
29. antakaḥ śamanaḥ mṛtyuḥ pātālam vaḍavāmukham kṣuradhārā viṣam sarpaḥ vahniḥ iti ekataḥ,
(anyataḥ ca) striyaḥ
29. Death (antaka), the Destroyer (śamana), the ultimate end (mṛtyu), the netherworld (pātāla), the submarine fire (vaḍavāmukha), a razor's edge, poison, a snake, fire - these are on one side, and women are on the other.
यतश्च भूतानि महान्ति पञ्च यतश्च लोका विहिता विधात्रा ।
यतः पुमांसः प्रमदाश्च निर्मितास्तदैव दोषाः प्रमदासु नारद ॥३०॥
30. yataśca bhūtāni mahānti pañca; yataśca lokā vihitā vidhātrā ,
yataḥ pumāṁsaḥ pramadāśca nirmitā;stadaiva doṣāḥ pramadāsu nārada.
30. yataḥ ca bhūtāni mahānti pañca
yataḥ ca lokāḥ vihitāḥ vidhātrā
yataḥ pumāṃsaḥ pramadāḥ ca nirmitāḥ
tadā eva doṣāḥ pramadāsu nārada
30. nārada,
yataḥ ca pañca mahānti bhūtāni (santi),
yataḥ ca vidhātrā lokāḥ vihitāḥ,
yataḥ pumāṃsaḥ ca pramadāḥ nirmitāḥ,

30. O Nārada, from whom the five great elements (bhūta) were created, and from whom the worlds were fashioned by the Creator (vidhātṛ), and from whom men and women were formed - from that very source, faults are inherent in women.
