अर्जुन उवाच ।
अदृश्यमानास्ते दैत्या योधयन्ति स्म मायया ।
अदृश्यानस्त्रवीर्येण तानप्यहमयोधयम् ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
adṛśyamānāste daityā yodhayanti sma māyayā ,
adṛśyānastravīryeṇa tānapyahamayodhayam.

māyayā adṛśyān astra-vīryeṇa tān api aham ayodhayām
1. Arjuna said: "Those Daityas, though unseen, were fighting by means of their illusion (māyā). I, for my part, fought those unseen ones with the power of my weapons."
गाण्डीवमुक्ता विशिखाः सम्यगस्त्रप्रचोदिताः ।
अच्छिन्दन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि यत्र यत्र स्म तेऽभवन् ॥२॥
2. gāṇḍīvamuktā viśikhāḥ samyagastrapracoditāḥ ,
acchindannuttamāṅgāni yatra yatra sma te'bhavan.
2. gāṇḍīva-muktāḥ viśikhāḥ samyak astra-pracoditāḥ
acchindan uttamāṅgāni yatra yatra sma te abhavan
2. The arrows released from the Gāṇḍīva, properly impelled by the power of mystic missiles, cut off the heads of the demons wherever they were found.
ततो निवातकवचा वध्यमाना मया युधि ।
संहृत्य मायां सहसा प्राविशन्पुरमात्मनः ॥३॥
3. tato nivātakavacā vadhyamānā mayā yudhi ,
saṁhṛtya māyāṁ sahasā prāviśanpuramātmanaḥ.
3. tatas nivātakavacāḥ vadhyamānāḥ mayā yudhi
saṃhṛtya māyām sahasā prāviśan puram ātmanaḥ
3. Then, the Nivātakavacas, being slain by me in battle, swiftly withdrew their illusion (māyā) and entered their own city.
व्यपयातेषु दैत्येषु प्रादुर्भूते च दर्शने ।
अपश्यं दानवांस्तत्र हताञ्शतसहस्रशः ॥४॥
4. vyapayāteṣu daityeṣu prādurbhūte ca darśane ,
apaśyaṁ dānavāṁstatra hatāñśatasahasraśaḥ.
4. vyapayāteṣu daityeṣu prādurbhūte ca darśane
apaśyam dānavān tatra hatān śatasahasraśaḥ
4. When the Daityas had departed and the clear vision (darśana) appeared, I saw there hundreds of thousands of Dānavas who had been slain.
विनिष्पिष्टानि तत्रैषां शस्त्राण्याभरणानि च ।
कूटशः स्म प्रदृश्यन्ते गात्राणि कवचानि च ॥५॥
5. viniṣpiṣṭāni tatraiṣāṁ śastrāṇyābharaṇāni ca ,
kūṭaśaḥ sma pradṛśyante gātrāṇi kavacāni ca.
5. viniṣpiṣṭāni tatra eṣām śastrāṇi ābharaṇāni ca
kūṭaśaḥ sma pradṛśyante gātrāṇi kavacāni ca
5. There, their crushed weapons and ornaments, and also their limbs and armors, were seen in piles.
हयानां नान्तरं ह्यासीत्पदाद्विचलितुं पदम् ।
उत्पत्य सहसा तस्थुरन्तरिक्षगमास्ततः ॥६॥
6. hayānāṁ nāntaraṁ hyāsītpadādvicalituṁ padam ,
utpatya sahasā tasthurantarikṣagamāstataḥ.
6. hayānām na antaram hi āsīt padāt vicalitum padam
utpatya sahasā tasthuḥ antarikṣagamāḥ tatas
6. Indeed, there was no space for the horses to move a single step. Then, the sky-going (antarikṣagama) [demons] suddenly leaped up and stood [in the air].
ततो निवातकवचा व्योम संछाद्य केवलम् ।
अदृश्या ह्यभ्यवर्तन्त विसृजन्तः शिलोच्चयान् ॥७॥
7. tato nivātakavacā vyoma saṁchādya kevalam ,
adṛśyā hyabhyavartanta visṛjantaḥ śiloccayān.
7. tataḥ nivātakavacāḥ vyoma saṃchādya kevalam
adṛśyāḥ hi abhyavartanta visṛjantaḥ śiloccayān
7. Then the Nivātakavacas, having completely covered the sky, became invisible and indeed attacked, releasing huge rocks.
अन्तर्भूमिगताश्चान्ये हयानां चरणान्यथ ।
न्यगृह्णन्दानवा घोरा रथचक्रे च भारत ॥८॥
8. antarbhūmigatāścānye hayānāṁ caraṇānyatha ,
nyagṛhṇandānavā ghorā rathacakre ca bhārata.
8. antar bhūmigatāḥ ca anye hayānām caraṇāni atha
nyagṛhṇan dānavāḥ ghorāḥ rathacakre ca bhārata
8. O Bhārata, other dreadful Dānavas, having gone underground, then seized the feet of the horses and the chariot wheels.
विनिगृह्य हरीनश्वान्रथं च मम युध्यतः ।
सर्वतो मामचिन्वन्त सरथं धरणीधरैः ॥९॥
9. vinigṛhya harīnaśvānrathaṁ ca mama yudhyataḥ ,
sarvato māmacinvanta sarathaṁ dharaṇīdharaiḥ.
9. vinigṛhya harīn aśvān ratham ca mama yudhyataḥ
sarvataḥ mām acinvanta saratham dharaṇīdharaiḥ
9. Having seized my horses and chariot while I was fighting, they then covered me and my chariot from all sides with mountains and rocks.
पर्वतैरुपचीयद्भिः पतमानैस्तथापरैः ।
स देशो यत्र वर्ताम गुहेव समपद्यत ॥१०॥
10. parvatairupacīyadbhiḥ patamānaistathāparaiḥ ,
sa deśo yatra vartāma guheva samapadyata.
10. parvataiḥ upacīyadbhíḥ patamānaiḥ tathā aparaiḥ
saḥ deśaḥ yatra vartām guhā iva samapadyata
10. That place where I was became like a cave, with mountains and other rocks piling up and falling.
पर्वतैश्छाद्यमानोऽहं निगृहीतैश्च वाजिभिः ।
अगच्छं परमामार्तिं मातलिस्तदलक्षयत् ॥११॥
11. parvataiśchādyamāno'haṁ nigṛhītaiśca vājibhiḥ ,
agacchaṁ paramāmārtiṁ mātalistadalakṣayat.
11. parvataiḥ chādyamānaḥ aham nigṛhītaiḥ ca vājibhiḥ
agaccham paramām ārtim mātaliḥ tat alakṣayat
11. I was being covered by mountains, and with my horses held captive, I reached a state of extreme distress. Matali noticed that.
लक्षयित्वा तु मां भीतमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
अर्जुनार्जुन मा भैस्त्वं वज्रमस्त्रमुदीरय ॥१२॥
12. lakṣayitvā tu māṁ bhītamidaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
arjunārjuna mā bhaistvaṁ vajramastramudīraya.
12. lakṣayitvā tu mām bhītam idam vacanam abravīt
arjuna arjuna mā bhaiḥ tvam vajram astram udīraya
12. Having noticed me frightened, he then spoke this statement: 'Arjuna, Arjuna, do not be afraid! You must unleash the vajra (thunderbolt) weapon.'
ततोऽहं तस्य तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वज्रमुदीरयम् ।
देवराजस्य दयितं वज्रमस्त्रं नराधिप ॥१३॥
13. tato'haṁ tasya tadvākyaṁ śrutvā vajramudīrayam ,
devarājasya dayitaṁ vajramastraṁ narādhipa.
13. tataḥ aham tasya tat vākyam śrutvā vajram udīrayam
devarājasya dayitam vajram astram narādhipa
13. Then, O king (narādhipa), having heard his words, I unleashed the vajra (thunderbolt) weapon, which is dear to the king of the gods.
अचलं स्थानमासाद्य गाण्डीवमनुमन्त्र्य च ।
अमुञ्चं वज्रसंस्पर्शानायसान्निशिताञ्शरान् ॥१४॥
14. acalaṁ sthānamāsādya gāṇḍīvamanumantrya ca ,
amuñcaṁ vajrasaṁsparśānāyasānniśitāñśarān.
14. acalam sthānam āsādya gāṇḍīvam anumatrya ca
amuncam vajrasaṃsparśān āyasān niśitān śarān
14. Having reached a steady position and having consecrated my bow (Gāṇḍīva), I then released sharp, iron arrows that felt like a thunderbolt (vajra).
ततो मायाश्च ताः सर्वा निवातकवचांश्च तान् ।
ते वज्रचोदिता बाणा वज्रभूताः समाविशन् ॥१५॥
15. tato māyāśca tāḥ sarvā nivātakavacāṁśca tān ,
te vajracoditā bāṇā vajrabhūtāḥ samāviśan.
15. tataḥ māyāḥ ca tāḥ sarvāḥ nivātakavacān ca tān
te vajracoditāḥ bāṇāḥ vajrabhūtāḥ samāviśan
15. Then, those arrows, propelled by the thunderbolt and themselves having become like thunderbolts, completely pierced all those illusions and also those Nivātakavaca demons.
ते वज्रवेगाभिहता दानवाः पर्वतोपमाः ।
इतरेतरमाश्लिष्य न्यपतन्पृथिवीतले ॥१६॥
16. te vajravegābhihatā dānavāḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
itaretaramāśliṣya nyapatanpṛthivītale.
16. te vajravegābhihatāḥ dānavāḥ parvatopamāḥ
itaretaram āśliṣya nyapatan pṛthivītale
16. Struck by the tremendous force of the thunderbolt, those mountain-like demons fell down onto the surface of the earth, entangled with each other.
अन्तर्भूमौ तु येऽगृह्णन्दानवा रथवाजिनः ।
अनुप्रविश्य तान्बाणाः प्राहिण्वन्यमसादनम् ॥१७॥
17. antarbhūmau tu ye'gṛhṇandānavā rathavājinaḥ ,
anupraviśya tānbāṇāḥ prāhiṇvanyamasādanam.
17. antarbhūmau tu ye agṛhṇan dānavāḥ rathavājinaḥ
anupraviśya tān bāṇāḥ prāhiṇvan yamasādanam
17. But as for those demons with their chariots and horses who had sought refuge inside the earth, the arrows pursued them, entering after them and dispatching them to the abode of Yama.
हतैर्निवातकवचैर्निरस्तैः पर्वतोपमैः ।
समाच्छाद्यत देशः स विकीर्णैरिव पर्वतैः ॥१८॥
18. hatairnivātakavacairnirastaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ ,
samācchādyata deśaḥ sa vikīrṇairiva parvataiḥ.
18. hataiḥ nivātakavacaiḥ nirastaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ
samācchādyata deśaḥ saḥ vikīrṇaiḥ iva parvataiḥ
18. That region became completely covered by the slain, fallen, mountain-like Nivātakavaca demons, as if by scattered mountains.
न हयानां क्षतिः काचिन्न रथस्य न मातलेः ।
मम चादृश्यत तदा तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१९॥
19. na hayānāṁ kṣatiḥ kācinna rathasya na mātaleḥ ,
mama cādṛśyata tadā tadadbhutamivābhavat.
19. na hayānām kṣatiḥ kācit na rathasya na mātaleḥ
mama ca adṛśyata tadā tat adbhutam iva abhavat
19. No damage at all was seen to the horses, nor to the chariot, nor to Matali. It appeared wondrous to me at that moment.
ततो मां प्रहसन्राजन्मातलिः प्रत्यभाषत ।
नैतदर्जुन देवेषु त्वयि वीर्यं यदीक्ष्यते ॥२०॥
20. tato māṁ prahasanrājanmātaliḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
naitadarjuna deveṣu tvayi vīryaṁ yadīkṣyate.
20. tataḥ mām prahasan rājan mātaliḥ prati abhāṣata
na etat arjuna deveṣu tvayi vīryam yat īkṣyate
20. Then, O king, Matali, smiling, spoke to me in reply: 'Arjuna, this valor (vīrya) that is seen in you is not even found among the gods.'
हतेष्वसुरसंघेषु दारास्तेषां तु सर्वशः ।
प्राक्रोशन्नगरे तस्मिन्यथा शरदि लक्ष्मणाः ॥२१॥
21. hateṣvasurasaṁgheṣu dārāsteṣāṁ tu sarvaśaḥ ,
prākrośannagare tasminyathā śaradi lakṣmaṇāḥ.
21. hateṣu asurasaṃgheṣu dārāḥ teṣām tu sarvaśaḥ
pra akrośan nagare tasmin yathā śaradi lakṣmaṇāḥ
21. After the throngs of asuras were slain, all their wives in that city cried out loudly, just like cranes (lakṣmaṇāḥ) cry out in autumn.
ततो मातलिना सार्धमहं तत्पुरमभ्ययाम् ।
त्रासयन्रथघोषेण निवातकवचस्त्रियः ॥२२॥
22. tato mātalinā sārdhamahaṁ tatpuramabhyayām ,
trāsayanrathaghoṣeṇa nivātakavacastriyaḥ.
22. tataḥ matalinā sārdham aham tat puram abhi
ayām trāsayan rathaghoṣeṇa nivātakavacastriyah
22. Then, I went towards that city along with Matali, frightening the women of the Nivatakavacas with the rumbling sound of the chariot.
तान्दृष्ट्वा दशसाहस्रान्मयूरसदृशान्हयान् ।
रथं च रविसंकाशं प्राद्रवन्गणशः स्त्रियः ॥२३॥
23. tāndṛṣṭvā daśasāhasrānmayūrasadṛśānhayān ,
rathaṁ ca ravisaṁkāśaṁ prādravangaṇaśaḥ striyaḥ.
23. tān dṛṣṭvā daśasāhasrān mayūrasadṛśān hayān
rathaṃ ca ravisaṃkāśaṃ prādravan gaṇaśaḥ striyaḥ
23. Having seen those ten thousand horses, which resembled peacocks, and the chariot, which shone like the sun, the women fled in groups.
ताभिराभरणैः शब्दस्त्रासिताभिः समीरितः ।
शिलानामिव शैलेषु पतन्तीनामभूत्तदा ॥२४॥
24. tābhirābharaṇaiḥ śabdastrāsitābhiḥ samīritaḥ ,
śilānāmiva śaileṣu patantīnāmabhūttadā.
24. tābhiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ śabdaḥ trāsitābhiḥ samīritaḥ
śilānām iva śaileṣu patantīnām abhūt tadā
24. Then, the sound emitted by their ornaments, as those women were terrified, was like that of rocks falling on mountains.
वित्रस्ता दैत्यनार्यस्ताः स्वानि वेश्मान्यथाविशन् ।
बहुरत्नविचित्राणि शातकुम्भमयानि च ॥२५॥
25. vitrastā daityanāryastāḥ svāni veśmānyathāviśan ,
bahuratnavicitrāṇi śātakumbhamayāni ca.
25. vitrastā daityanāryaḥ tāḥ svāni veśmāni yathā
aviśan bahuratnavicitrāṇi śātakuṃbhamayāni ca
25. Those terrified demon women accordingly entered their own dwellings, which were variegated with many jewels and made of pure gold.
तदद्भुताकारमहं दृष्ट्वा नगरमुत्तमम् ।
विशिष्टं देवनगरादपृच्छं मातलिं ततः ॥२६॥
26. tadadbhutākāramahaṁ dṛṣṭvā nagaramuttamam ,
viśiṣṭaṁ devanagarādapṛcchaṁ mātaliṁ tataḥ.
26. tat adbhutākāram aham dṛṣṭvā nagaram uttamam
viśiṣṭaṃ devanagarāt apṛccham mātaliṃ tataḥ
26. Having seen that excellent city, which was wondrous in appearance and superior to the city of the gods, I then questioned Matali.
इदमेवंविधं कस्माद्देवता नाविशन्त्युत ।
पुरंदरपुराद्धीदं विशिष्टमिति लक्षये ॥२७॥
27. idamevaṁvidhaṁ kasmāddevatā nāviśantyuta ,
puraṁdarapurāddhīdaṁ viśiṣṭamiti lakṣaye.
27. idam evamvidham kasmāt devatāḥ na āviśanti uta
purandarapurāt hi idam viśiṣṭam iti lakṣaye
27. Why, indeed, do the gods not enter such a place as this? I perceive this to be superior to Indra's own city.
मातलिरुवाच ।
आसीदिदं पुरा पार्थ देवराजस्य नः पुरम् ।
ततो निवातकवचैरितः प्रच्याविताः सुराः ॥२८॥
28. mātaliruvāca ,
āsīdidaṁ purā pārtha devarājasya naḥ puram ,
tato nivātakavacairitaḥ pracyāvitāḥ surāḥ.
28. mātaliḥ uvāca āsīt idam purā pārtha devarājasya naḥ
puram tataḥ nivātakavacaiḥ itaḥ pracyāvitāḥ surāḥ
28. Matali said: 'O Pārtha, this was formerly our city, the capital of the king of gods. From here, the gods were then driven away by the Nivātakavacas.'
तपस्तप्त्वा महत्तीव्रं प्रसाद्य च पितामहम् ।
इदं वृतं निवासाय देवेभ्यश्चाभयं युधि ॥२९॥
29. tapastaptvā mahattīvraṁ prasādya ca pitāmaham ,
idaṁ vṛtaṁ nivāsāya devebhyaścābhayaṁ yudhi.
29. tapaḥ taptvā mahat tīvram prasādya ca pitāmaham
idam vṛtam nivāsāya devebhyaḥ ca abhayam yudhi
29. Having performed great and intense austerities (tapas) and having pleased the great grandfather Brahmā, this place was chosen as a dwelling, and protection in battle was granted to the gods.
ततः शक्रेण भगवान्स्वयम्भूरभिचोदितः ।
विधत्तां भगवानत्रेत्यात्मनो हितकाम्यया ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ śakreṇa bhagavānsvayambhūrabhicoditaḥ ,
vidhattāṁ bhagavānatretyātmano hitakāmyayā.
30. tataḥ śakreṇa bhagavān svayambhūḥ abhicoditaḥ
vidhattām bhagavān atra iti ātmanaḥ hitakāmyayā
30. Then, the revered self-born (Brahmā) was urged by Indra, saying, 'May the venerable Lord establish this here,' out of a desire for his own (Indra's) benefit.
तत उक्तो भगवता दिष्टमत्रेति वासवः ।
भवितान्तस्त्वमेवैषां देहेनान्येन वृत्रहन् ॥३१॥
31. tata ukto bhagavatā diṣṭamatreti vāsavaḥ ,
bhavitāntastvamevaiṣāṁ dehenānyena vṛtrahan.
31. tataḥ uktaḥ bhagavatā diṣṭam atra iti vāsavaḥ
bhavitā antaḥ tvam eva eṣām dehena anyena vṛtrahan
31. Then, the revered Lord (Bhagavān) said, 'This is fate in this matter, O Vāsava. You yourself will be their end, through another body, O Vṛtra-slayer.'
तत एषां वधार्थाय शक्रोऽस्त्राणि ददौ तव ।
न हि शक्याः सुरैर्हन्तुं य एते निहतास्त्वया ॥३२॥
32. tata eṣāṁ vadhārthāya śakro'strāṇi dadau tava ,
na hi śakyāḥ surairhantuṁ ya ete nihatāstvayā.
32. tataḥ eṣām vadhārthāya śakraḥ astrāṇi dadau tava
na hi śakyāḥ suraiḥ hantum ye ete nihatāḥ tvayā
32. Therefore, Śakra (Indra) gave you weapons for their destruction, because these beings, whom you have slain, could certainly not have been killed by the gods.
कालस्य परिणामेन ततस्त्वमिह भारत ।
एषामन्तकरः प्राप्तस्तत्त्वया च कृतं तथा ॥३३॥
33. kālasya pariṇāmena tatastvamiha bhārata ,
eṣāmantakaraḥ prāptastattvayā ca kṛtaṁ tathā.
33. kālasya pariṇāmena tataḥ tvam iha bhārata eṣām
antakaraḥ prāptaḥ tat tvayā ca kṛtam tathā
33. Therefore, by the operation of time, you have arrived here, O Bhārata, to be the destroyer of these (enemies). And indeed, you have accomplished that task accordingly.
दानवानां विनाशार्थं महास्त्राणां महद्बलम् ।
ग्राहितस्त्वं महेन्द्रेण पुरुषेन्द्र तदुत्तमम् ॥३४॥
34. dānavānāṁ vināśārthaṁ mahāstrāṇāṁ mahadbalam ,
grāhitastvaṁ mahendreṇa puruṣendra taduttamam.
34. dānavānām vināśārtham mahāstrāṇām mahat balam
grāhitaḥ tvam mahendreṇa puruṣendra tat uttamam
34. For the destruction of the Dānavas (demons), O chief of men (puruṣendra), you were endowed by Mahendra (Indra) with that excellent and great power (bala) of mighty weapons (mahāstra).
अर्जुन उवाच ।
ततः प्रविश्य नगरं दानवांश्च निहत्य तान् ।
पुनर्मातलिना सार्धमगच्छं देवसद्म तत् ॥३५॥
35. arjuna uvāca ,
tataḥ praviśya nagaraṁ dānavāṁśca nihatya tān ,
punarmātalinā sārdhamagacchaṁ devasadma tat.
35. arjunaḥ uvāca tataḥ praviśya nagaram dānavān ca nihatya
tān punaḥ mātalinā sārdham agacchaṃ devasadma tat
35. Arjuna said: "Then, having entered the city and slain those Dānavas (dānava), I returned again with Mātali to that divine abode."
