भीष्म उवाच ।
साधु पश्यति वै द्रोणः कृपः साध्वनुपश्यति ।
कर्णस्तु क्षत्रधर्मेण यथावद्योद्धुमिच्छति ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sādhu paśyati vai droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ sādhvanupaśyati ,
karṇastu kṣatradharmeṇa yathāvadyoddhumicchati.

anupaśyati karṇaḥ tu kṣatradharmeṇa yathāvat yoddhum icchati
1. Bhishma said: Drona indeed perceives rightly, and Kripa also perceives rightly. But Karna wishes to fight appropriately, in accordance with the warrior's natural law (kṣatradharma).
आचार्यो नाभिषक्तव्यः पुरुषेण विजानता ।
देशकालौ तु संप्रेक्ष्य योद्धव्यमिति मे मतिः ॥२॥
2. ācāryo nābhiṣaktavyaḥ puruṣeṇa vijānatā ,
deśakālau tu saṁprekṣya yoddhavyamiti me matiḥ.
2. ācāryaḥ na abhiṣaktavyaḥ puruṣeṇa vijānatā
deśakālau tu samprekṣya yoddhavyam iti me matiḥ
2. A discerning person should not attack a preceptor. However, having properly assessed the place and time, one should fight; this is my opinion.
यस्य सूर्यसमाः पञ्च सपत्नाः स्युः प्रहारिणः ।
कथमभ्युदये तेषां न प्रमुह्येत पण्डितः ॥३॥
3. yasya sūryasamāḥ pañca sapatnāḥ syuḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
kathamabhyudaye teṣāṁ na pramuhyeta paṇḍitaḥ.
3. yasya sūryasamāḥ pañca sapatnāḥ syuḥ prahāriṇaḥ
katham abhyudaye teṣām na pramuhyeta paṇḍitaḥ
3. For whom there are five formidable enemies, radiant like the sun and capable of striking, how could a wise man (paṇḍita) not be bewildered by their prosperity?
स्वार्थे सर्वे विमुह्यन्ति येऽपि धर्मविदो जनाः ।
तस्माद्राजन्ब्रवीम्येष वाक्यं ते यदि रोचते ॥४॥
4. svārthe sarve vimuhyanti ye'pi dharmavido janāḥ ,
tasmādrājanbravīmyeṣa vākyaṁ te yadi rocate.
4. svārthe sarve vimuhyanti ye api dharmavidaḥ janāḥ
tasmāt rājan bravīmi eṣa vākyam te yadi rocate
4. Everyone becomes deluded regarding their own self-interest, even those people who understand natural law (dharma). Therefore, O King, I speak this statement to you, if it pleases you.
कर्णो यदभ्यवोचन्नस्तेजःसंजननाय तत् ।
आचार्यपुत्रः क्षमतां महत्कार्यमुपस्थितम् ॥५॥
5. karṇo yadabhyavocannastejaḥsaṁjananāya tat ,
ācāryaputraḥ kṣamatāṁ mahatkāryamupasthitam.
5. karṇaḥ yat abhyavocat naḥ tejaḥsaṃjananāya tat
ācāryaputraḥ kṣamatām mahat kāryam upasthitam
5. Whatever Karṇa spoke to us for the generation of our valor, may the preceptor's (guru) son forgive it, for a great task has presented itself.
नायं कालो विरोधस्य कौन्तेये समुपस्थिते ।
क्षन्तव्यं भवता सर्वमाचार्येण कृपेण च ॥६॥
6. nāyaṁ kālo virodhasya kaunteye samupasthite ,
kṣantavyaṁ bhavatā sarvamācāryeṇa kṛpeṇa ca.
6. na ayam kālaḥ virodhasya kaunteye samupasthite
kṣantavyam bhavatā sarvam ācāryeṇa kṛpeṇa ca
6. This is not the time for conflict, now that the son of Kuntī (Arjuna) has arrived. Everything must be forgiven by you, and by the preceptor (ācārya) and Kṛpa.
भवतां हि कृतास्त्रत्वं यथादित्ये प्रभा तथा ।
यथा चन्द्रमसो लक्ष्म सर्वथा नापकृष्यते ।
एवं भवत्सु ब्राह्मण्यं ब्रह्मास्त्रं च प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥७॥
7. bhavatāṁ hi kṛtāstratvaṁ yathāditye prabhā tathā ,
yathā candramaso lakṣma sarvathā nāpakṛṣyate ,
evaṁ bhavatsu brāhmaṇyaṁ brahmāstraṁ ca pratiṣṭhitam.
7. bhavatām hi kṛtāstratvam yathā āditye
prabhā tathā yathā candramasaḥ lakṣma
sarvathā na apakṛṣyate evam bhavatsu
brāhmaṇyam brahmāstram ca pratiṣṭhitam
7. Indeed, your mastery of divine weapons is like the radiance inherent in the sun. Just as the mark on the moon is never diminished in any way, similarly, among you, priestly status (brāhmaṇya) and the divine weapon (brahmāstra) are firmly established.
चत्वार एकतो वेदाः क्षात्रमेकत्र दृश्यते ।
नैतत्समस्तमुभयं कस्मिंश्चिदनुशुश्रुमः ॥८॥
8. catvāra ekato vedāḥ kṣātramekatra dṛśyate ,
naitatsamastamubhayaṁ kasmiṁścidanuśuśrumaḥ.
8. catvāraḥ ekataḥ vedāḥ kṣātram ekatra dṛśyate na
etat samastam ubhayam kasmin cit anuśuśrumaḥ
8. The four Vedas are on one side, and the martial spirit (kṣātram) is seen on the other. We have never heard of these two qualities existing completely together in anyone.
अन्यत्र भारताचार्यात्सपुत्रादिति मे मतिः ।
ब्रह्मास्त्रं चैव वेदाश्च नैतदन्यत्र दृश्यते ॥९॥
9. anyatra bhāratācāryātsaputrāditi me matiḥ ,
brahmāstraṁ caiva vedāśca naitadanyatra dṛśyate.
9. anyatra bhārata ācāryāt sa-putrāt iti me matiḥ
brahma-astram ca eva vedāḥ ca na etat anyatra dṛśyate
9. My opinion is that this (combination) is not found anywhere else except in the preceptor (guru) of the Bhāratas along with his son. The Brahmāstra weapon and also the Vedas—this is not seen elsewhere.
आचार्यपुत्रः क्षमतां नायं कालः स्वभेदने ।
सर्वे संहत्य युध्यामः पाकशासनिमागतम् ॥१०॥
10. ācāryaputraḥ kṣamatāṁ nāyaṁ kālaḥ svabhedane ,
sarve saṁhatya yudhyāmaḥ pākaśāsanimāgatam.
10. ācārya-putraḥ kṣamatām na ayam kālaḥ sva-bhedane
sarve saṃhatya yudhyāmaḥ pākaśāsanim āgatam
10. O son of the preceptor, please forgive! This is not the time for our own internal division. Let us all unite and fight against the son of Pākaśāsana (Arjuna), who has arrived.
बलस्य व्यसनानीह यान्युक्तानि मनीषिभिः ।
मुख्यो भेदो हि तेषां वै पापिष्ठो विदुषां मतः ॥११॥
11. balasya vyasanānīha yānyuktāni manīṣibhiḥ ,
mukhyo bhedo hi teṣāṁ vai pāpiṣṭho viduṣāṁ mataḥ.
11. balasya vyasanāni iha yāni uktāni manīṣibhiḥ
mukhyaḥ bhedaḥ hi teṣām vai pāpiṣṭhaḥ viduṣām mataḥ
11. Among the calamities (vyasanāni) of an army that have been enumerated by the wise, internal division (bheda) is indeed the chief, considered the most sinful (pāpiṣṭha) by scholars.
अश्वत्थामोवाच ।
आचार्य एव क्षमतां शान्तिरत्र विधीयताम् ।
अभिषज्यमाने हि गुरौ तद्वृत्तं रोषकारितम् ॥१२॥
12. aśvatthāmovāca ,
ācārya eva kṣamatāṁ śāntiratra vidhīyatām ,
abhiṣajyamāne hi gurau tadvṛttaṁ roṣakāritam.
12. aśvatthāmā uvāca ācāryaḥ eva kṣamatām śāntiḥ atra
vidhīyatām abhiṣajyamāne hi gurau tat vṛttam roṣakāritam
12. Aśvatthāmā said: The preceptor (ācārya) himself should forgive, and peace should be established here. Indeed, when a teacher (guru) is being attacked, such behavior is caused by anger.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणं क्षमयामास भारत ।
सह कर्णेन भीष्मेण कृपेण च महात्मना ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato duryodhano droṇaṁ kṣamayāmāsa bhārata ,
saha karṇena bhīṣmeṇa kṛpeṇa ca mahātmanā.
13. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ duryodhanaḥ droṇam kṣamayāmāsa
bhārata saha karṇena bhīṣmeṇa kṛpeṇa ca mahātmanā
13. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), Duryodhana appeased Droṇa, accompanied by Karṇa, Bhīṣma, and the great-souled (mahātman) Kṛpa.
द्रोण उवाच ।
यदेव प्रथमं वाक्यं भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत् ।
तेनैवाहं प्रसन्नो वै परमत्र विधीयताम् ॥१४॥
14. droṇa uvāca ,
yadeva prathamaṁ vākyaṁ bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo'bravīt ,
tenaivāhaṁ prasanno vai paramatra vidhīyatām.
14. droṇaḥ uvāca yat eva prathamam vākyam bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ
abravīt tena eva aham prasannaḥ vai param atra vidhīyatām
14. Droṇa said: Indeed, I am pleased by that very first statement which Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu (śāntanava), uttered. Now, let the highest (parama) be done in this matter.
यथा दुर्योधनेऽयत्ते नागः स्पृशति सैनिकान् ।
साहसाद्यदि वा मोहात्तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥१५॥
15. yathā duryodhane'yatte nāgaḥ spṛśati sainikān ,
sāhasādyadi vā mohāttathā nītirvidhīyatām.
15. yathā duryodhane ayatte nāgaḥ spṛśati sainikān
sāhasāt yadi vā mohāt tathā nītiḥ vidhīyatām
15. Just as a rogue elephant (nāga) might attack soldiers when Duryodhana is unwary, so too should a strategy (nīti) be enacted, whether due to impulsiveness or delusion.
वनवासे ह्यनिर्वृत्ते दर्शयेन्न धनंजयः ।
धनं वालभमानोऽत्र नाद्य नः क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥१६॥
16. vanavāse hyanirvṛtte darśayenna dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
dhanaṁ vālabhamāno'tra nādya naḥ kṣantumarhati.
16. vanavāse hi anirvṛtte darśayet na dhanañjayaḥ dhanam
vā labhamānaḥ atra na adya naḥ kṣantum arhati
16. Certainly, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) must not reveal himself while his period of forest exile is still unfulfilled. If he were to obtain his wealth (or claim to it) here, he would not tolerate us today.
यथा नायं समायुज्याद्धार्तराष्ट्रान्कथंचन ।
यथा च न पराजय्यात्तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥१७॥
17. yathā nāyaṁ samāyujyāddhārtarāṣṭrānkathaṁcana ,
yathā ca na parājayyāttathā nītirvidhīyatām.
17. yathā na ayam samāyujyāt dhārtarāṣṭrān kathañcana
yathā ca na parājayyāt tathā nītiḥ vidhīyatām
17. A policy (nīti) should be devised in such a way that he (Arjuna) does not, by any means, join the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Kauravas), and also that he is not defeated.
उक्तं दुर्योधनेनापि पुरस्ताद्वाक्यमीदृशम् ।
तदनुस्मृत्य गाङ्गेय यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. uktaṁ duryodhanenāpi purastādvākyamīdṛśam ,
tadanusmṛtya gāṅgeya yathāvadvaktumarhasi.
18. uktam duryodhanena api purastāt vākyam īdṛśam
tat anusmṛtya gāṅgeya yathāvat vaktum arhasi
18. Such a statement was also made by Duryodhana previously. Therefore, O son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma), remembering that, you should speak appropriately.
