Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'Undoubtedly, O Bhārata, this is true, that you torment me and wound me with the darts of your words. I do not blame you for this; this misfortune has indeed come upon us due to my imprudence (anaya).'

2.
Indeed, I played dice (akṣān anvapadyam) desiring to win the kingdom (rājyam) along with its territory from Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son. But that deceitful gambler (śaṭhaḥ kitavaḥ), Subala's son, played against me for Suyodhana's sake.

That great deceiver (mahāmāyaḥ) Śakuni, from the mountains (pārvatīyaḥ), always casting dice (akṣapūgān pravapann) in the assembly hall, played against me, who am guileless (amāyinam), with his deception (māyayā). Therefore, O Bhīmasena, I saw ruin (vṛjinam).

Indeed, if one had correctly perceived Śakuni's dice - the odd and even numbers that were favorable to his wishes - then it would have been possible to control one's own self (ātman). But anger truly destroys a person's fortitude.

5.
O dear father, the self (ātman), when encompassed by manliness, pride, and valor, cannot be controlled. Bhīmasena, I do not begrudge your words; I believe that is how it was destined to be.

He, that son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, our king, desiring the kingdom, cast us down into misfortune. And he forced us into servitude, Bhīmasena, where Draupadī became our refuge.

O Prince, O Ajatashatru, you should live twelve years in the forest, known (to all), as you wish. Then, with all your brothers, you must live an additional period, unknown and hidden by disguise.

9.
O dear one, if the spies of the Bharatas (Kauravas) recognize you, having heard that you are living in that (hidden) manner, then you would have to live that same number of years again. Therefore, O son of Pṛthā, having decided this, make that promise.

10.
O King, if you (and your brothers) remain undiscovered by our spies for this period, having skillfully deluded my people (the Kaurava spies), I declare this truth here in the Kuru assembly: those five rivers (Pañcanada), O Bharata, will truly be yours.

11.
And thus, 'we all the brothers, having been defeated by you, would live for a period, renouncing enjoyments.' Thus, that king (Yudhiṣṭhira) declared previously in the assembly of the Kurus. 'So be it,' he was told by me.

That dice game was most disgraceful for us. In it, all of us were defeated and exiled. Thus, in this wretched state, we roam through various lands and arduous forests.

Suyodhana, not desiring peace, again succumbed to the power of anger. He then incited all the Kurus, along with those others who were under his influence.

Who, after having established that peace treaty in the presence of virtuous people, would then abandon it for the sake of a kingdom in this world? I believe that for a noble person, ruling the earth by transgressing one's duty (dharma) is worse than death.

Bhima, if you had performed a heroic act right then, when you took up your mace in the dice game, eager to burn their arms but were restrained by Arjuna, what great misdeed would have happened then?

Why did you not speak earlier, demonstrating your valor (pauruṣa), when the oath was being made? But now, after the appropriate time has passed and you have resorted to this later, why do you speak to me so excessively?

O Bhimasena, I am again distressed; it is like having experienced the taste of poison. This is because, O Bhima, having witnessed Draupadi (Yājñasenī) being dragged, that act was tolerated (kṣāntam).

18.
O chief among the Bharatas (bharatpravīra), having carried out what was declared among the Kuru warriors (kuruvīramadhye), it is not possible to act now. You must await the time when happiness (sukhodayasya) dawns, just as a sower of seeds (bījavāpaḥ) awaits the ripening (paktim) of fruits.

19.
Indeed, when a person who was previously wronged by deceit, having realized that the enmity (vairam) against him has become potent (mahāguṇam), flourishing, and fruitful, then eradicates it through his valor (pauruṣa), only then does that hero truly live in the world of living beings (jīvaloka).

And he obtains complete prosperity in the world. I believe his enemies bow down to him, and friends serve him with great affection. Just as the gods live depending on Indra, so too do others depend on him.

Also, understand my true vow: I choose natural law (dharma) over immortality and life. A kingdom, sons, fame, and wealth - none of it amounts to even a fraction of truth.
