ब्रह्मोवाच ।
अव्यक्तात्पूर्वमुत्पन्नो महानात्मा महामतिः ।
आदिर्गुणानां सर्वेषां प्रथमः सर्ग उच्यते ॥१॥
1. brahmovāca ,
avyaktātpūrvamutpanno mahānātmā mahāmatiḥ ,
ādirguṇānāṁ sarveṣāṁ prathamaḥ sarga ucyate.

1. Brahmā said: The great (ātman), possessing a profound intellect, which first originated from the unmanifest (prakṛti), is declared to be the primal creation and the source of all the qualities (guṇas).
महानात्मा मतिर्विष्णुर्विश्वः शंभुश्च वीर्यवान् ।
बुद्धिः प्रज्ञोपलब्धिश्च तथा ख्यातिर्धृतिः स्मृतिः ॥२॥
2. mahānātmā matirviṣṇurviśvaḥ śaṁbhuśca vīryavān ,
buddhiḥ prajñopalabdhiśca tathā khyātirdhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ.
2. mahān ātmā matiḥ viṣṇuḥ viśvaḥ śambhuḥ ca vīryavān
buddhiḥ prajñā upalabdhiḥ ca tathā khyātiḥ dhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ
2. mahān ātmā matiḥ viṣṇuḥ viśvaḥ ca vīryavān śambhuḥ
tathā buddhiḥ prajñā upalabdhiḥ ca khyātiḥ dhṛtiḥ smṛtiḥ
2. The great (ātman) is identified as intellect, Viṣṇu, the all-pervading (viśva), and the powerful Śambhu. It is also understanding (buddhi), wisdom, perception, knowledge, resolve, and memory.
पर्यायवाचकैः शब्दैर्महानात्मा विभाव्यते ।
तं जानन्ब्राह्मणो विद्वान्न प्रमोहं निगच्छति ॥३॥
3. paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdairmahānātmā vibhāvyate ,
taṁ jānanbrāhmaṇo vidvānna pramohaṁ nigacchati.
3. paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdaiḥ mahān ātmā vibhāvyate
tam jānan brāhmaṇaḥ vidvān na pramoham nigacchati
3. mahān ātmā paryāyavācakaiḥ śabdaiḥ vibhāvyate
tam jānan vidvān brāhmaṇaḥ pramoham na nigacchati
3. The great (ātman) is understood through various synonymous terms. A learned Brahmin, knowing that (ātman), does not fall into delusion.
सर्वतःपाणिपादश्च सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः ।
सर्वतःश्रुतिमाँल्लोके सर्वं व्याप्य स तिष्ठति ॥४॥
4. sarvataḥpāṇipādaśca sarvatokṣiśiromukhaḥ ,
sarvataḥśrutimāँlloke sarvaṁ vyāpya sa tiṣṭhati.
4. sarvataḥ pāṇipādaḥ ca sarvataḥ akṣiśiromukhaḥ
sarvataḥ śrutimān loke sarvam vyāpya saḥ tiṣṭhati
4. saḥ sarvataḥ pāṇipādaḥ ca sarvataḥ akṣiśiromukhaḥ
sarvataḥ śrutimān loke sarvam vyāpya tiṣṭhati
4. He has hands and feet everywhere, and eyes, heads, and mouths everywhere. He has ears everywhere in the world; pervading all, he remains.
महाप्रभार्चिः पुरुषः सर्वस्य हृदि निश्रितः ।
अणिमा लघिमा प्राप्तिरीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः ॥५॥
5. mahāprabhārciḥ puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi niśritaḥ ,
aṇimā laghimā prāptirīśāno jyotiravyayaḥ.
5. mahāprabhārciḥ puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi niśritaḥ
aṇimā laghimā prāptiḥ īśānaḥ jyotiḥ avyayaḥ
5. mahāprabhārciḥ puruṣaḥ sarvasya hṛdi niśritaḥ
aṇimā laghimā prāptiḥ īśānaḥ avyayaḥ jyotiḥ
5. The supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), resplendent with great light, dwells within the heart of all beings. He embodies the powers of minuteness (aṇimā), lightness (laghimā), and attainment (prāpti), and is the ruler, the imperishable light.
तत्र बुद्धिमतां लोकाः संन्यासनिरताश्च ये ।
ध्यानिनो नित्ययोगाश्च सत्यसंधा जितेन्द्रियाः ॥६॥
6. tatra buddhimatāṁ lokāḥ saṁnyāsaniratāśca ye ,
dhyānino nityayogāśca satyasaṁdhā jitendriyāḥ.
6. tatra buddhimatām lokāḥ saṃnyāsaniratāḥ ca ye
dhyāninaḥ nityayogāḥ ca satyasaṃdhāḥ jitendriyāḥ
6. tatra ye buddhimatām lokāḥ ca saṃnyāsaniratāḥ
dhyāninaḥ ca nityayogāḥ satyasaṃdhāḥ jitendriyāḥ
6. To that supreme state attain those intelligent individuals, those dedicated to renunciation (saṃnyāsa), constant in their meditative practice (dhyāna), ever-united in (yoga), committed to truth, and those who have controlled their senses.
ज्ञानवन्तश्च ये केचिदलुब्धा जितमन्यवः ।
प्रसन्नमनसो धीरा निर्ममा निरहंकृताः ।
विमुक्ताः सर्व एवैते महत्त्वमुपयान्ति वै ॥७॥
7. jñānavantaśca ye kecidalubdhā jitamanyavaḥ ,
prasannamanaso dhīrā nirmamā nirahaṁkṛtāḥ ,
vimuktāḥ sarva evaite mahattvamupayānti vai.
7. jñānavantaḥ ca ye kecit alubdhāḥ
jitamanayavaḥ prasannamanasaḥ dhīrāḥ
nirmamāḥ nirahaṃkṛtāḥ vimuktāḥ
sarve eva ete mahattvam upayānti vai
7. ye ca kecit jñānavantaḥ alubdhāḥ
jitamanayavaḥ prasannamanasaḥ dhīrāḥ
nirmamāḥ nirahaṃkṛtāḥ vimuktāḥ
ete sarve eva vai mahattvam upayānti
7. And furthermore, those who possess true knowledge, who are free from greed and have conquered their anger, who have serene minds and are steadfast, free from possessiveness and from ego (ahaṃkāra) - all these liberated ones indeed attain the supreme state.
आत्मनो महतो वेद यः पुण्यां गतिमुत्तमाम् ।
स धीरः सर्वलोकेषु न मोहमधिगच्छति ।
विष्णुरेवादिसर्गेषु स्वयंभूर्भवति प्रभुः ॥८॥
8. ātmano mahato veda yaḥ puṇyāṁ gatimuttamām ,
sa dhīraḥ sarvalokeṣu na mohamadhigacchati ,
viṣṇurevādisargeṣu svayaṁbhūrbhavati prabhuḥ.
8. ātmanaḥ mahataḥ veda yaḥ puṇyām
gatim uttamām saḥ dhīraḥ sarvalokeṣu
na moham adhigacchati viṣṇuḥ eva
ādisargeṣu svayambhūḥ bhavati prabhuḥ
8. yaḥ mahataḥ ātmanaḥ puṇyām uttamām gatim veda,
saḥ dhīraḥ sarvalokeṣu moham na adhigacchati.
viṣṇuḥ eva ādisargeṣu svayambhūḥ prabhuḥ bhavati.
8. That steadfast person who truly knows the sacred and supreme state of the great self (ātman) never experiences delusion in any world. Indeed, it is Viṣṇu Himself, the self-existent Lord, who manifests in all primal creations.
एवं हि यो वेद गुहाशयं प्रभुं नरः पुराणं पुरुषं विश्वरूपम् ।
हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं स बुद्धिमान्बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठति ॥९॥
9. evaṁ hi yo veda guhāśayaṁ prabhuṁ; naraḥ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ viśvarūpam ,
hiraṇmayaṁ buddhimatāṁ parāṁ gatiṁ; sa buddhimānbuddhimatītya tiṣṭhati.
9. evam hi yaḥ veda guhāśayam prabhum
naraḥ purāṇam puruṣam viśvarūpam
hiraṇmayam buddhimatām parām gatim saḥ
buddhimān buddhim atītya tiṣṭhati
9. hi evam yaḥ naraḥ guhāśayam prabhum purāṇam puruṣam viśvarūpam hiraṇmayam buddhimatām parām gatim veda,
saḥ buddhimān buddhim atītya tiṣṭhati
9. Indeed, a person who thus knows the Lord residing in the cave (of the heart) - the ancient cosmic person (puruṣa) of universal form, who is luminous and the supreme destination for the intelligent - that wise person, transcending (his own) intellect, abides.
