न्यपतत्तुरगाभ्याशे नचिरादिव शीघ्रगा ॥१॥

Sūta said: Having crossed that ocean, Kadrū, along with Vinatā, swiftly alighted near the horse, as if instantly.
निशाम्य च बहून्वालान्कृष्णान्पुच्छं समाश्रितान् ।
विनतां विषण्णवदनां कद्रूर्दास्ये न्ययोजयत् ॥२॥

2. niśāmya ca bahūnvālānkṛṣṇānpucchaṁ samāśritān ,
vinatāṁ viṣaṇṇavadanāṁ kadrūrdāsye nyayojayat.

And having observed the many black hairs clinging to the horse's tail, Kadrū then appointed Vinatā, who was dejected, to a state of servitude.
ततः सा विनता तस्मिन्पणितेन पराजिता ।
अभवद्दुःखसंतप्ता दासीभावं समास्थिता ॥३॥

Consequently, Vinatā, having been defeated in that wager, became overwhelmed with grief, as she was now in a state of servitude.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चैव गरुडः काल आगते ।
विना मात्रा महातेजा विदार्याण्डमजायत ॥४॥

4. etasminnantare caiva garuḍaḥ kāla āgate ,

And just at this time, when the destined moment arrived, the immensely radiant Garuḍa was born, bursting forth from the egg without his mother's presence.
अग्निराशिरिवोद्भासन्समिद्धोऽतिभयंकरः ।
प्रवृद्धः सहसा पक्षी महाकायो नभोगतः ॥५॥

Shining like a blazing mass of fire, he was exceedingly terrifying. The bird, immense in body, suddenly grew and soared into the sky.
तं दृष्ट्वा शरणं जग्मुः प्रजाः सर्वा विभावसुम् ।
प्रणिपत्याब्रुवंश्चैनमासीनं विश्वरूपिणम् ॥६॥

6. taṁ dṛṣṭvā śaraṇaṁ jagmuḥ prajāḥ sarvā vibhāvasum ,

Seeing him, all the creatures approached Vibhāvasu for refuge. Prostrating before him, who was seated and embodied the universal form, they addressed him.
अग्ने मा त्वं प्रवर्धिष्ठाः कच्चिन्नो न दिधक्षसि ।
असौ हि राशिः सुमहान्समिद्धस्तव सर्पति ॥७॥

7. agne mā tvaṁ pravardhiṣṭhāḥ kaccinno na didhakṣasi ,
asau hi rāśiḥ sumahānsamiddhastava sarpati.

O Agni, please do not expand so much! Surely you do not intend to burn us? Indeed, this immense and blazing mass of yours is spreading.
अग्निरुवाच ।
नैतदेवं यथा यूयं मन्यध्वमसुरार्दनाः ।
गरुडो बलवानेष मम तुल्यः स्वतेजसा ॥८॥
नैतदेवं यथा यूयं मन्यध्वमसुरार्दनाः ।
गरुडो बलवानेष मम तुल्यः स्वतेजसा ॥८॥
8. agniruvāca ,
naitadevaṁ yathā yūyaṁ manyadhvamasurārdanāḥ ,
garuḍo balavāneṣa mama tulyaḥ svatejasā.

agniḥ uvāca na etat evam yathā yūyam manyadhvam

Agni said, "It is not as you, O destroyers of Asuras, imagine. This powerful Garuḍa is indeed equal to me in his own brilliance."
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्तास्ततो गत्वा गरुडं वाग्भिरस्तुवन् ।
अदूरादभ्युपेत्यैनं देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥९॥
एवमुक्तास्ततो गत्वा गरुडं वाग्भिरस्तुवन् ।
अदूरादभ्युपेत्यैनं देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥९॥

evamuktāstato gatvā garuḍaṁ vāgbhirastuvan ,
adūrādabhyupetyainaṁ devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstadā.

sūtaḥ uvāca evam uktāḥ tataḥ gatvā garuḍam vāgbhiḥ
astuvan adūrāt abhyupetya enam devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ tadā

Sūta said: "Thus addressed, the gods, accompanied by the sages, then went and, approaching Garuḍa from a short distance, praised him with words."
त्वमृषिस्त्वं महाभागस्त्वं देवः पतगेश्वरः ।
त्वं प्रभुस्तपनप्रख्यस्त्वं नस्त्राणमनुत्तमम् ॥१०॥
त्वं प्रभुस्तपनप्रख्यस्त्वं नस्त्राणमनुत्तमम् ॥१०॥
10. tvamṛṣistvaṁ mahābhāgastvaṁ devaḥ patageśvaraḥ ,
tvaṁ prabhustapanaprakhyastvaṁ nastrāṇamanuttamam.
tvaṁ prabhustapanaprakhyastvaṁ nastrāṇamanuttamam.

tvam ṛṣiḥ tvam mahābhāgaḥ tvam devaḥ patageśvaraḥ
tvam prabhuḥ tapanaprakhyaḥ tvam naḥ trāṇam anuttamam
tvam prabhuḥ tapanaprakhyaḥ tvam naḥ trāṇam anuttamam
10.
"You are a sage, you are most illustrious, you are a god, the lord of all birds. You are the supreme lord, radiant like the sun. You are our unsurpassed protector."
बलोर्मिमान्साधुरदीनसत्त्वः समृद्धिमान्दुष्प्रसहस्त्वमेव ।
तपः श्रुतं सर्वमहीनकीर्ते अनागतं चोपगतं च सर्वम् ॥११॥
तपः श्रुतं सर्वमहीनकीर्ते अनागतं चोपगतं च सर्वम् ॥११॥
11. balormimānsādhuradīnasattvaḥ; samṛddhimānduṣprasahastvameva ,
tapaḥ śrutaṁ sarvamahīnakīrte; anāgataṁ copagataṁ ca sarvam.
tapaḥ śrutaṁ sarvamahīnakīrte; anāgataṁ copagataṁ ca sarvam.

balormimān sādhuḥ adīna-sattvaḥ
samṛddhimān duṣprasahaḥ tvam
eva tapaḥ śrutam sarvam ahīnakīrte
anāgatam ca upagatam ca sarvam
samṛddhimān duṣprasahaḥ tvam
eva tapaḥ śrutam sarvam ahīnakīrte
anāgatam ca upagatam ca sarvam
11.
O you of undiminished fame, You alone are mighty, virtuous, noble-minded, prosperous, and irresistible. All austerity, all sacred knowledge, and all that is yet to come, as well as all that has already transpired, is Yours.
त्वमुत्तमः सर्वमिदं चराचरं गभस्तिभिर्भानुरिवावभाससे ।
समाक्षिपन्भानुमतः प्रभां मुहुस्त्वमन्तकः सर्वमिदं ध्रुवाध्रुवम् ॥१२॥
समाक्षिपन्भानुमतः प्रभां मुहुस्त्वमन्तकः सर्वमिदं ध्रुवाध्रुवम् ॥१२॥
12. tvamuttamaḥ sarvamidaṁ carācaraṁ; gabhastibhirbhānurivāvabhāsase ,
samākṣipanbhānumataḥ prabhāṁ muhu;stvamantakaḥ sarvamidaṁ dhruvādhruvam.

tvam uttamaḥ sarvam idam cara-acaram
gabhastibhiḥ bhānuḥ iva avabhāsase
samākṣipan bhānumataḥ prabhām muhuḥ tvam
antakaḥ sarvam idam dhruva-adhruvam
gabhastibhiḥ bhānuḥ iva avabhāsase
samākṣipan bhānumataḥ prabhām muhuḥ tvam
antakaḥ sarvam idam dhruva-adhruvam
12.
You are the supreme one. You illuminate all this, both moving and unmoving, just as the sun shines with its rays. Constantly eclipsing the very splendor of the sun, You are the ultimate destroyer of all this, both permanent and impermanent.
दिवाकरः परिकुपितो यथा दहेत्प्रजास्तथा दहसि हुताशनप्रभ ।
भयंकरः प्रलय इवाग्निरुत्थितो विनाशयन्युगपरिवर्तनान्तकृत् ॥१३॥
भयंकरः प्रलय इवाग्निरुत्थितो विनाशयन्युगपरिवर्तनान्तकृत् ॥१३॥
13. divākaraḥ parikupito yathā dahe;tprajāstathā dahasi hutāśanaprabha ,
bhayaṁkaraḥ pralaya ivāgnirutthito; vināśayanyugaparivartanāntakṛt.

divākaraḥ parikupitaḥ yathā dahet
prajāḥ tathā dahasi hutāśana-prabha

vināśayan yuga-parivartana-anta-kṛt
prajāḥ tathā dahasi hutāśana-prabha
bhayaṁkaraḥ pralayaḥ iva agniḥ utthitaḥ
vināśayan yuga-parivartana-anta-kṛt
13.
O Lord, whose splendor is like that of fire! Just as the extremely enraged sun would burn all creatures, so too do You incinerate them. Terrifying, like the fire that rises at the time of cosmic dissolution, You destroy everything, bringing an end to the cycles of ages.
खगेश्वरं शरणमुपस्थिता वयं महौजसं वितिमिरमभ्रगोचरम् ।
महाबलं गरुडमुपेत्य खेचरं परावरं वरदमजय्यविक्रमम् ॥१४॥
महाबलं गरुडमुपेत्य खेचरं परावरं वरदमजय्यविक्रमम् ॥१४॥
14. khageśvaraṁ śaraṇamupasthitā vayaṁ; mahaujasaṁ vitimiramabhragocaram ,
mahābalaṁ garuḍamupetya khecaraṁ; parāvaraṁ varadamajayyavikramam.

khaga-īśvaram śaraṇam upasthitāḥ vayam
mahā-ojasam vi-timiram abhra-gocaram
mahā-balam garuḍam upetya khe-caram
para-avaram varadam a-jayya-vikramam
mahā-ojasam vi-timiram abhra-gocaram
mahā-balam garuḍam upetya khe-caram
para-avaram varadam a-jayya-vikramam
14.
We have come to seek refuge in Garuda, the lord of birds, who is immensely powerful, dispelling darkness, dwelling in the clouds, supremely strong, moving through the sky, encompassing all, both superior and inferior, the bestower of boons, and possessing unconquerable might.
एवं स्तुतः सुपर्णस्तु देवैः सर्षिगणैस्तदा ।
तेजसः प्रतिसंहारमात्मनः स चकार ह ॥१५॥

15. evaṁ stutaḥ suparṇastu devaiḥ sarṣigaṇaistadā ,
tejasaḥ pratisaṁhāramātmanaḥ sa cakāra ha.

15.
Thus praised by the gods along with the groups of sages, Suparna (Garuda) then withdrew his own power and splendor.
