वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातः स्वबाहुविजितं धनम् ।
भीष्माय सत्यवत्यै च मात्रे चोपजहार सः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ svabāhuvijitaṁ dhanam ,
bhīṣmāya satyavatyai ca mātre copajahāra saḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, he (Pāṇḍu) offered the wealth conquered by his own arms to Bhīṣma, to Satyavatī, and to his mother.
विदुराय च वै पाण्डुः प्रेषयामास तद्धनम् ।
सुहृदश्चापि धर्मात्मा धनेन समतर्पयत् ॥२॥
2. vidurāya ca vai pāṇḍuḥ preṣayāmāsa taddhanam ,
suhṛdaścāpi dharmātmā dhanena samatarpayat.

2. And indeed, Pāṇḍu sent that wealth to Vidura. The righteous one (dharma-ātman) also satisfied his friends with wealth.
ततः सत्यवतीं भीष्मः कौसल्यां च यशस्विनीम् ।
शुभैः पाण्डुजितै रत्नैस्तोषयामास भारत ॥३॥
3. tataḥ satyavatīṁ bhīṣmaḥ kausalyāṁ ca yaśasvinīm ,
śubhaiḥ pāṇḍujitai ratnaistoṣayāmāsa bhārata.

3. Then, O descendant of Bharata, Bhishma gratified Satyavati and the illustrious Kausalya with beautiful jewels that had been won by Pandu.
ननन्द माता कौसल्या तमप्रतिमतेजसम् ।
जयन्तमिव पौलोमी परिष्वज्य नरर्षभम् ॥४॥
4. nananda mātā kausalyā tamapratimatejasam ,
jayantamiva paulomī pariṣvajya nararṣabham.

4. Mother Kausalya rejoiced, having embraced that bull among men, who possessed unequaled splendor, just as Paulomi (Shachi) embraced Jayanta.
तस्य वीरस्य विक्रान्तैः सहस्रशतदक्षिणैः ।
अश्वमेधशतैरीजे धृतराष्ट्रो महामखैः ॥५॥
5. tasya vīrasya vikrāntaiḥ sahasraśatadakṣiṇaiḥ ,
aśvamedhaśatairīje dhṛtarāṣṭro mahāmakhaiḥ.

5. For the sake of that hero, Dhṛtarāṣṭra performed hundreds of great horse-Vedic rituals (yajña), which were marked by valorous deeds and involved donations of hundreds of thousands (of cows or wealth).
संप्रयुक्तश्च कुन्त्या च माद्र्या च भरतर्षभ ।
जिततन्द्रीस्तदा पाण्डुर्बभूव वनगोचरः ॥६॥
6. saṁprayuktaśca kuntyā ca mādryā ca bharatarṣabha ,
jitatandrīstadā pāṇḍurbabhūva vanagocaraḥ.

jitatandrīḥ tadā pāṇḍuḥ babhūva vanagocaraḥ
6. O best of the Bharatas, then Pandu, accompanied by Kunti and Madri and having overcome indolence, became a dweller of the forest.
हित्वा प्रासादनिलयं शुभानि शयनानि च ।
अरण्यनित्यः सततं बभूव मृगयापरः ॥७॥
7. hitvā prāsādanilayaṁ śubhāni śayanāni ca ,
araṇyanityaḥ satataṁ babhūva mṛgayāparaḥ.

7. Abandoning his palace residence and luxurious beds, he became perpetually devoted to forest life and hunting.
स चरन्दक्षिणं पार्श्वं रम्यं हिमवतो गिरेः ।
उवास गिरिपृष्ठेषु महाशालवनेषु च ॥८॥
8. sa carandakṣiṇaṁ pārśvaṁ ramyaṁ himavato gireḥ ,
uvāsa giripṛṣṭheṣu mahāśālavaneṣu ca.
8. saḥ caran dakṣiṇam pārśvam ramyam himavataḥ
gireḥ uvāsa giripṛṣṭheṣu mahāśālavaneṣu ca
8. Wandering along the beautiful southern slopes of the Himavat mountain, he resided on mountain peaks and in forests of grand śāla trees.
रराज कुन्त्या माद्र्या च पाण्डुः सह वने वसन् ।
करेण्वोरिव मध्यस्थः श्रीमान्पौरंदरो गजः ॥९॥
9. rarāja kuntyā mādryā ca pāṇḍuḥ saha vane vasan ,
kareṇvoriva madhyasthaḥ śrīmānpauraṁdaro gajaḥ.
9. rarāja kuntyā mādryā ca pāṇḍuḥ saha vane vasan
kareṇvoḥ iva madhyasthaḥ śrīmān paurandaraḥ gajaḥ
9. Paṇḍu, residing in the forest with Kunti and Madri, shone brilliantly, like a magnificent elephant of Indra (Paurandara), situated between two female elephants.
भारतं सह भार्याभ्यां बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम् ।
विचित्रकवचं वीरं परमास्त्रविदं नृपम् ।
देवोऽयमित्यमन्यन्त चरन्तं वनवासिनः ॥१०॥
10. bhārataṁ saha bhāryābhyāṁ bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam ,
vicitrakavacaṁ vīraṁ paramāstravidaṁ nṛpam ,
devo'yamityamanyanta carantaṁ vanavāsinaḥ.
10. bhāratam saha bhāryābhyām
bāṇakhadgadhanurdharam vicitrakavacam vīram
paramāstravidam nṛpam devaḥ ayam
iti amanyanta carantam vanavāsinaḥ
10. The forest dwellers considered this wandering king (nṛpa), Bhārata (Pāṇḍu), who was with his two wives, wielding arrows, a sword, and a bow, adorned with a wondrous armor, heroic, and a master of ultimate weapons, to be a god.
तस्य कामांश्च भोगांश्च नरा नित्यमतन्द्रिताः ।
उपजह्रुर्वनान्तेषु धृतराष्ट्रेण चोदिताः ॥११॥
11. tasya kāmāṁśca bhogāṁśca narā nityamatandritāḥ ,
upajahrurvanānteṣu dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa coditāḥ.
11. tasya kāmān ca bhogān ca narā nityam atandritāḥ
upajahruḥ vanānteṣu dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa coditāḥ
11. Prompted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, people, ever vigilant, brought him desires and enjoyments into the forest regions.
अथ पारशवीं कन्यां देवकस्य महीपतेः ।
रूपयौवनसंपन्नां स शुश्रावापगासुतः ॥१२॥
12. atha pāraśavīṁ kanyāṁ devakasya mahīpateḥ ,
rūpayauvanasaṁpannāṁ sa śuśrāvāpagāsutaḥ.
12. atha pāraśavīm kanyām devakasya mahīpateḥ
rūpayauvanasaṃpannām saḥ śuśrāva āpagāsutaḥ
12. Then, Bhīṣma, the son of Apagā, heard about the princess, the Pāraśava daughter of King Devaka, who was endowed with beauty and youth.
ततस्तु वरयित्वा तामानाय्य पुरुषर्षभः ।
विवाहं कारयामास विदुरस्य महामतेः ॥१३॥
13. tatastu varayitvā tāmānāyya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
vivāhaṁ kārayāmāsa vidurasya mahāmateḥ.
13. tataḥ tu varayitvā tām ānāyya puruṣarṣabhaḥ
vivāham kārayāmāsa vidurasya mahāmateḥ
13. Then, the foremost of men (Bhīṣma), having chosen and brought her, arranged the marriage (vivāha) for the great-minded Vidura.
तस्यां चोत्पादयामास विदुरः कुरुनन्दनः ।
पुत्रान्विनयसंपन्नानात्मनः सदृशान्गुणैः ॥१४॥
14. tasyāṁ cotpādayāmāsa viduraḥ kurunandanaḥ ,
putrānvinayasaṁpannānātmanaḥ sadṛśānguṇaiḥ.
14. tasyām ca utpādayāmāsa viduraḥ kurunandanaḥ
putrān vinayasaṃpannān ātmanaḥ sadṛśān guṇaiḥ
14. And in her, Vidura, the delight of the Kurus, begot sons who were endowed with discipline and resembled himself in qualities (guṇaiḥ).
