जनमेजय उवाच ।
बालो वाक्यं स्थविर इव प्रभाषते नायं बालः स्थविरोऽयं मतो मे ।
इच्छाम्यहं वरमस्मै प्रदातुं तन्मे विप्रा वितरध्वं समेताः ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
bālo vākyaṁ sthavira iva prabhāṣate; nāyaṁ bālaḥ sthaviro'yaṁ mato me ,
icchāmyahaṁ varamasmai pradātuṁ; tanme viprā vitaradhvaṁ sametāḥ.
1. janamejayaḥ uvāca bālaḥ vākyam sthaviraḥ
iva prabhāṣate na ayam bālaḥ sthaviraḥ
ayam mataḥ me icchāmi aham varam asmai
pradātum tat me viprāḥ vitaradhvam sametāḥ
1. Janamejaya said: "This boy speaks words like an old man. To me, he is not a boy; he is an old man. I wish to grant him a boon. Therefore, O assembled brahmins, please bestow it upon him."
सदस्या ऊचुः ।
बालोऽपि विप्रो मान्य एवेह राज्ञां यश्चाविद्वान्यश्च विद्वान्यथावत् ।
सर्वान्कामांस्त्वत्त एषोऽर्हतेऽद्य यथा च नस्तक्षक एति शीघ्रम् ॥२॥
2. sadasyā ūcuḥ ,
bālo'pi vipro mānya eveha rājñāṁ; yaścāvidvānyaśca vidvānyathāvat ,
sarvānkāmāṁstvatta eṣo'rhate'dya; yathā ca nastakṣaka eti śīghram.
2. sadasyāḥ ūcuḥ bālaḥ api vipraḥ mānyaḥ eva
iha rājñām yaḥ ca avidvān yaḥ ca vidvān
yathāvat sarvān kāmān tvattaḥ eṣaḥ arhate
adya yathā ca naḥ takṣakaḥ eti śīghram
2. The members said: "Here, even a brahmin boy is to be honored by kings, whether he is unlearned or learned, as is proper. This one deserves all boons from you today, just as Takṣaka is certain to come to us quickly."
सूत उवाच ।
व्याहर्तुकामे वरदे नृपे द्विजं वरं वृणीष्वेति ततोऽभ्युवाच ।
होता वाक्यं नातिहृष्टान्तरात्मा कर्मण्यस्मिंस्तक्षको नैति तावत् ॥३॥
3. sūta uvāca ,
vyāhartukāme varade nṛpe dvijaṁ; varaṁ vṛṇīṣveti tato'bhyuvāca ,
hotā vākyaṁ nātihṛṣṭāntarātmā; karmaṇyasmiṁstakṣako naiti tāvat.
3. sūtaḥ uvāca vyāhartukāme varade nṛpe
dvijam varam vṛṇīṣva iti tataḥ abhyuvāca
hotā vākyam na ati-hṛṣṭa-antar-ātmā
karmaṇi asmin takṣakaḥ na eti tāvat
3. Sūta said: When the king, ready to speak and grant a boon, addressed the brahmin, saying, "Choose a boon!", the Hotā priest, whose inner self was not greatly pleased, then spoke these words: "Takṣaka has not come to this ritual yet."
जनमेजय उवाच ।
यथा चेदं कर्म समाप्यते मे यथा च नस्तक्षक एति शीघ्रम् ।
तथा भवन्तः प्रयतन्तु सर्वे परं शक्त्या स हि मे विद्विषाणः ॥४॥
4. janamejaya uvāca ,
yathā cedaṁ karma samāpyate me; yathā ca nastakṣaka eti śīghram ,
tathā bhavantaḥ prayatantu sarve; paraṁ śaktyā sa hi me vidviṣāṇaḥ.
4. janamejayaḥ uvāca yathā ca idam karma
samāpyate me yathā ca naḥ takṣakaḥ
eti śīghram tathā bhavantaḥ prayatantu
sarve param śaktyā saḥ hi me vidviṣāṇaḥ
4. Janamejaya said: "Just as this ritual is to be completed for me, and just as Takṣaka is to come quickly to us, so all of you should exert yourselves with your utmost power. For he is my enemy."
ऋत्विज ऊचुः ।
यथा शास्त्राणि नः प्राहुर्यथा शंसति पावकः ।
इन्द्रस्य भवने राजंस्तक्षको भयपीडितः ॥५॥
5. ṛtvija ūcuḥ ,
yathā śāstrāṇi naḥ prāhuryathā śaṁsati pāvakaḥ ,
indrasya bhavane rājaṁstakṣako bhayapīḍitaḥ.
5. ṛtvijaḥ ūcuḥ yathā śāstrāṇi naḥ prāhuḥ yathā śaṃsati
pāvakaḥ indrasya bhavane rājan takṣakaḥ bhaya-pīḍitaḥ
5. The priests said: "O King, just as the scriptures inform us and just as the sacrificial fire indicates, Takṣaka is distressed by fear in Indra's abode."
सूत उवाच ।
यथा सूतो लोहिताक्षो महात्मा पौराणिको वेदितवान्पुरस्तात् ।
स राजानं प्राह पृष्टस्तदानीं यथाहुर्विप्रास्तद्वदेतन्नृदेव ॥६॥
6. sūta uvāca ,
yathā sūto lohitākṣo mahātmā; paurāṇiko veditavānpurastāt ,
sa rājānaṁ prāha pṛṣṭastadānīṁ; yathāhurviprāstadvadetannṛdeva.
6. sūtaḥ uvāca | yathā sūtaḥ lohitākṣaḥ
mahātmā paurāṇikaḥ veditavān purastāt
| saḥ rājānam prāha pṛṣṭaḥ tadānīm
yathā āhuḥ viprāḥ tat vadet etat nṛdeva
6. The Sūta said: "Just as Sūta Lohitākṣa, the great-souled narrator of ancient lore, had previously known, so he, when questioned by the king at that time, spoke to him: 'O King, you should narrate this story exactly as the learned Brahmins recount it.'"
पुराणमागम्य ततो ब्रवीम्यहं दत्तं तस्मै वरमिन्द्रेण राजन् ।
वसेह त्वं मत्सकाशे सुगुप्तो न पावकस्त्वां प्रदहिष्यतीति ॥७॥
7. purāṇamāgamya tato bravīmyahaṁ; dattaṁ tasmai varamindreṇa rājan ,
vaseha tvaṁ matsakāśe sugupto; na pāvakastvāṁ pradahiṣyatīti.
7. purāṇam āgamya tataḥ bravīmi aham
dattam tasmai varam indreṇa rājan
| vasa iha tvam mat-sakāśe suguptaḥ
na pāvakaḥ tvām pradahīṣyati iti
7. Having understood the ancient lore, I shall now relate, O King, the boon given to him by Indra: 'Dwell here with me, well-protected; fire will not burn you.'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा दीक्षितस्तप्यमान आस्ते होतारं चोदयन्कर्मकाले ।
होता च यत्तः स जुहाव मन्त्रैरथो इन्द्रः स्वयमेवाजगाम ॥८॥
8. etacchrutvā dīkṣitastapyamāna; āste hotāraṁ codayankarmakāle ,
hotā ca yattaḥ sa juhāva mantrai;ratho indraḥ svayamevājagāma.
8. etat śrutvā dīkṣitaḥ tapyamānaḥ
āste hotāram codayan karma-kāle |
hotā ca yattaḥ saḥ juhāva mantraih
atha u indraḥ svayam eva ājagāma
8. Having heard this, the initiated sacrificer, performing austerities, remained, urging the Hotā priest at the time of the ritual. And that attentive Hotā offered oblations with mantras. Then, Indra himself arrived.
विमानमारुह्य महानुभावः सर्वैर्देवैः परिसंस्तूयमानः ।
बलाहकैश्चाप्यनुगम्यमानो विद्याधरैरप्सरसां गणैश्च ॥९॥
9. vimānamāruhya mahānubhāvaḥ; sarvairdevaiḥ parisaṁstūyamānaḥ ,
balāhakaiścāpyanugamyamāno; vidyādharairapsarasāṁ gaṇaiśca.
9. vimānam āruhya mahā-anubhāvaḥ
sarvaiḥ devaiḥ parisaṁstūyamānaḥ |
balāhakaiḥ ca api anugamyamānaḥ
vidyādharaiḥ apsarasām gaṇaiḥ ca
9. Having ascended his celestial chariot, the greatly powerful one (Indra), being greatly praised by all the gods, and being followed also by the Balāhaka clouds, by Vidyādharas, and by hosts of Apsarases...
तस्योत्तरीये निहितः स नागो भयोद्विग्नः शर्म नैवाभ्यगच्छत् ।
ततो राजा मन्त्रविदोऽब्रवीत्पुनः क्रुद्धो वाक्यं तक्षकस्यान्तमिच्छन् ॥१०॥
10. tasyottarīye nihitaḥ sa nāgo; bhayodvignaḥ śarma naivābhyagacchat ,
tato rājā mantravido'bravītpunaḥ; kruddho vākyaṁ takṣakasyāntamicchan.
10. tasya uttarīye nihitaḥ saḥ nāgaḥ
bhaya-udvignaḥ śarma na eva abhyagacchat |
tataḥ rājā mantra-vidaḥ abravīt punaḥ
kruddhaḥ vākyam takṣakasya antam icchan
10. That serpent, placed in his (Indra's) upper garment, agitated by fear, found no peace at all. Then, the furious king again spoke a statement to the mantra-experts, desiring the end of Takṣaka.
इन्द्रस्य भवने विप्रा यदि नागः स तक्षकः ।
तमिन्द्रेणैव सहितं पातयध्वं विभावसौ ॥११॥
11. indrasya bhavane viprā yadi nāgaḥ sa takṣakaḥ ,
tamindreṇaiva sahitaṁ pātayadhvaṁ vibhāvasau.
11. indrasya bhavane viprāḥ yadi nāgaḥ sa takṣakaḥ
tam indreṇa eva sahitaṃ pātayadhvaṃ vibhāvasau
11. O Brahmins, if that Takṣaka, the Nāga, is in Indra's abode, then make him fall into the fire, along with Indra himself!
ऋत्विज ऊचुः ।
अयमायाति वै तूर्णं तक्षकस्ते वशं नृप ।
श्रूयतेऽस्य महान्नादो रुवतो भैरवं भयात् ॥१२॥
12. ṛtvija ūcuḥ ,
ayamāyāti vai tūrṇaṁ takṣakaste vaśaṁ nṛpa ,
śrūyate'sya mahānnādo ruvato bhairavaṁ bhayāt.
12. ṛtvijaḥ ūcuḥ ayam āyāti vai tūrṇaṃ takṣakaḥ te vaśaṃ
nṛpa śrūyate asya mahān nādaḥ ruvataḥ bhairavaṃ bhayāt
12. The priests said: O King, that Takṣaka is indeed coming quickly under your control. A great, terrifying roar is heard from him, bellowing out of fear.
नूनं मुक्तो वज्रभृता स नागो भ्रष्टश्चाङ्कान्मन्त्रविस्रस्तकायः ।
घूर्णन्नाकाशे नष्टसंज्ञोऽभ्युपैति तीव्रान्निःश्वासान्निःश्वसन्पन्नगेन्द्रः ॥१३॥
13. nūnaṁ mukto vajrabhṛtā sa nāgo; bhraṣṭaścāṅkānmantravisrastakāyaḥ ,
ghūrṇannākāśe naṣṭasaṁjño'bhyupaiti; tīvrānniḥśvāsānniḥśvasanpannagendraḥ.
13. nūnaṃ muktaḥ vajrabhṛtā sa nāgaḥ bhraṣṭaḥ
ca aṅkāt mantra-visrasta-kāyaḥ
ghūrṇan ākāśe naṣṭa-saṃjñaḥ abhyupaiti
tīvrān niḥśvāsān niḥśvasan pannagendraḥ
13. Certainly, that Nāga has been released by the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra), having slipped from his lap, his body weakened by the mantras. Spinning in the sky, unconscious, the lord of serpents approaches, exhaling sharp breaths.
वर्तते तव राजेन्द्र कर्मैतद्विधिवत्प्रभो ।
अस्मै तु द्विजमुख्याय वरं त्वं दातुमर्हसि ॥१४॥
14. vartate tava rājendra karmaitadvidhivatprabho ,
asmai tu dvijamukhyāya varaṁ tvaṁ dātumarhasi.
14. vartate tava rājendra karma etat vidhivat prabho
asmai tu dvija-mukhyāya varaṃ tvaṃ dātum arhasi
14. O King of kings, O Lord, this ritual of yours is being performed according to the rules. Therefore, you ought to grant a boon to this chief of Brahmins.
जनमेजय उवाच ।
बालाभिरूपस्य तवाप्रमेय वरं प्रयच्छामि यथानुरूपम् ।
वृणीष्व यत्तेऽभिमतं हृदि स्थितं तत्ते प्रदास्याम्यपि चेददेयम् ॥१५॥
15. janamejaya uvāca ,
bālābhirūpasya tavāprameya; varaṁ prayacchāmi yathānurūpam ,
vṛṇīṣva yatte'bhimataṁ hṛdi sthitaṁ; tatte pradāsyāmyapi cedadeyam.
15. janamejaya uvāca bāla-abhirūpasya tava
aprameya varaṃ prayacchāmi yathā-anurūpam
vṛṇīṣva yat te abhimataṃ hṛdi
sthitaṃ tat te pradāsyāmi api cet adeyam
15. Janamejaya said: O immeasurable one, I grant you a boon suitable for your youthful, beautiful form. Choose what is desired by you and rests in your heart; I will give you that, even if it is otherwise not to be given.
सूत उवाच ।
पतिष्यमाणे नागेन्द्रे तक्षके जातवेदसि ।
इदमन्तरमित्येवं तदास्तीकोऽभ्यचोदयत् ॥१६॥
16. sūta uvāca ,
patiṣyamāṇe nāgendre takṣake jātavedasi ,
idamantaramityevaṁ tadāstīko'bhyacodayat.
16. sūta uvāca patiṣyamāṇe nāgendre takṣake jātavedasi
idam antaram iti evam tadā āstīkaḥ abhyacodayat
16. Sūta said: Then, as Takṣaka, the king of serpents, was about to fall into the sacrificial fire, Āstīka urged [the king], saying, 'This is the opportune moment!'
वरं ददासि चेन्मह्यं वृणोमि जनमेजय ।
सत्रं ते विरमत्वेतन्न पतेयुरिहोरगाः ॥१७॥
17. varaṁ dadāsi cenmahyaṁ vṛṇomi janamejaya ,
satraṁ te viramatvetanna pateyurihoragāḥ.
17. varam dadāsi cet mahyam vṛṇomi janamejaya
satram te viramatu etat na pateyuḥ iha uragāḥ
17. O Janamejaya, if you grant me a boon, I ask for this: may this sacrifice of yours cease, and may the serpents not fall here!
एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा ब्रह्मन्पारिक्षितस्तदा ।
नातिहृष्टमना वाक्यमास्तीकमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. evamuktastato rājā brahmanpārikṣitastadā ,
nātihṛṣṭamanā vākyamāstīkamidamabravīt.
18. evam uktaḥ tataḥ rājā brahman pārikṣitaḥ tadā
na ati hṛṣṭa_manas vākyam āstīkam idam abravīt
18. Thus addressed, King Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit, then, with a mind not exceedingly joyful, spoke these words to Āstīka: 'O Brāhmaṇa...'
सुवर्णं रजतं गाश्च यच्चान्यन्मन्यसे विभो ।
तत्ते दद्यां वरं विप्र न निवर्तेत्क्रतुर्मम ॥१९॥
19. suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ gāśca yaccānyanmanyase vibho ,
tatte dadyāṁ varaṁ vipra na nivartetkraturmama.
19. suvarṇam rajatam gāḥ ca yat ca anyat manyase vibho
tat te dadyām varam vipra na nivarteta kratuḥ mama
19. O Brāhmaṇa, I would give you gold, silver, cows, or whatever else you consider [a worthy] boon, O mighty one. However, my sacrifice must not cease.
आस्तीक उवाच ।
सुवर्णं रजतं गाश्च न त्वां राजन्वृणोम्यहम् ।
सत्रं ते विरमत्वेतत्स्वस्ति मातृकुलस्य नः ॥२०॥
20. āstīka uvāca ,
suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ gāśca na tvāṁ rājanvṛṇomyaham ,
satraṁ te viramatvetatsvasti mātṛkulasya naḥ.
20. āstīka uvāca suvarṇam rajatam gāḥ ca na tvām rājan vṛṇomi
aham satram te viramatu etat svasti mātṛkulasya naḥ
20. Āstīka said: 'O King, I do not ask you for gold, silver, or cows. May this sacrifice of yours cease, [and] may there be well-being for our maternal family!'
सूत उवाच ।
आस्तीकेनैवमुक्तस्तु राजा पारिक्षितस्तदा ।
पुनः पुनरुवाचेदमास्तीकं वदतां वरम् ॥२१॥
21. sūta uvāca ,
āstīkenaivamuktastu rājā pārikṣitastadā ,
punaḥ punaruvācedamāstīkaṁ vadatāṁ varam.
21. sūtaḥ uvāca | Āstīkena eva uktaḥ tu rājā pārikṣitaḥ
tadā | punaḥ punaḥ uvāca idam Āstīkam vadatām varam
21. Sūta said: King Parikṣit, having been addressed thus by Āstīka, then repeatedly spoke to Āstīka, the best of speakers.
अन्यं वरय भद्रं ते वरं द्विजवरोत्तम ।
अयाचत न चाप्यन्यं वरं स भृगुनन्दन ॥२२॥
22. anyaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te varaṁ dvijavarottama ,
ayācata na cāpyanyaṁ varaṁ sa bhṛgunandana.
22. anyam varaya bhadram te varam dvijavarottama |
ayācata na ca api anyam varam saḥ bhṛgunandanaḥ
22. “Choose another boon, O best of excellent Brahmins; may good fortune be yours!” Yet, that descendant of Bhṛgu did not ask for any other boon.
ततो वेदविदस्तत्र सदस्याः सर्व एव तम् ।
राजानमूचुः सहिता लभतां ब्राह्मणो वरम् ॥२३॥
23. tato vedavidastatra sadasyāḥ sarva eva tam ,
rājānamūcuḥ sahitā labhatāṁ brāhmaṇo varam.
23. tataḥ vedavidaḥ tatra sadasyāḥ sarve eva tam
rājānam ūcuḥ sahitāḥ labhatām brāhmaṇaḥ varam
23. Then, all the Vedic scholars and assembly members present there, being united, said to the king, "Let this Brahmin obtain his boon."
