नारद उवाच ।
ऋषभस्य ततः शृङ्गे निपत्य द्विजपक्षिणौ ।
शाण्डिलीं ब्राह्मणीं तत्र ददृशाते तपोन्विताम् ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
ṛṣabhasya tataḥ śṛṅge nipatya dvijapakṣiṇau ,
śāṇḍilīṁ brāhmaṇīṁ tatra dadṛśāte taponvitām.

1. Nārada said: Then, having alighted on the peak of (Mount) Ṛṣabha, the two bird-Brahmins saw there Śāṇḍilī, a Brahmin woman engaged in asceticism (tapas).
अभिवाद्य सुपर्णस्तु गालवश्चाभिपूज्य ताम् ।
तया च स्वागतेनोक्तौ विष्टरे संनिषीदतुः ॥२॥
2. abhivādya suparṇastu gālavaścābhipūjya tām ,
tayā ca svāgatenoktau viṣṭare saṁniṣīdatuḥ.
2. abhivādya suparṇaḥ tu gālavaḥ ca abhipūjya tām
tayā ca svāgatena uktau viṣṭare saṃniṣīdatuḥ
2. Suparṇa having greeted her respectfully and Gālava having honored her, they were then welcomed by her and sat down on a seat.
सिद्धमन्नं तया क्षिप्रं बलिमन्त्रोपबृंहितम् ।
भुक्त्वा तृप्तावुभौ भूमौ सुप्तौ तावन्नमोहितौ ॥३॥
3. siddhamannaṁ tayā kṣipraṁ balimantropabṛṁhitam ,
bhuktvā tṛptāvubhau bhūmau suptau tāvannamohitau.
3. siddham annam tayā kṣipram balimantropabṛṃhitam
bhuktvā tṛptau ubhau bhūmau suptau tau anamohitau
3. The food, quickly prepared by her and consecrated with offering (bali) mantras, was eaten. Both of them, satisfied, then slept on the ground, neither of them bewildered.
मुहूर्तात्प्रतिबुद्धस्तु सुपर्णो गमनेप्सया ।
अथ भ्रष्टतनूजाङ्गमात्मानं ददृशे खगः ॥४॥
4. muhūrtātpratibuddhastu suparṇo gamanepsayā ,
atha bhraṣṭatanūjāṅgamātmānaṁ dadṛśe khagaḥ.
4. muhūrtāt pratibuddhaḥ tu suparṇaḥ gamanepsayā
atha bhraṣṭatanūjāṅgam ātmānam dadṛśe khagaḥ
4. After a moment, Suparṇa awakened, intending to depart. Then, that bird (khaga) saw himself with his body parts (such as feathers and nails) fallen off.
मांसपिण्डोपमोऽभूत्स मुखपादान्वितः खगः ।
गालवस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा विषण्णः पर्यपृच्छत ॥५॥
5. māṁsapiṇḍopamo'bhūtsa mukhapādānvitaḥ khagaḥ ,
gālavastaṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇaḥ paryapṛcchata.
5. māṃsapiṇḍopamaḥ abhūt saḥ mukhapādānvitaḥ khagaḥ
gālavaḥ tam tathā dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇaḥ paryapṛcchat
5. That bird (khaga) became like a lump of flesh, endowed only with a face and feet. Gālava, seeing him in that condition, became dejected and inquired.
किमिदं भवता प्राप्तमिहागमनजं फलम् ।
वासोऽयमिह कालं तु कियन्तं नौ भविष्यति ॥६॥
6. kimidaṁ bhavatā prāptamihāgamanajaṁ phalam ,
vāso'yamiha kālaṁ tu kiyantaṁ nau bhaviṣyati.
6. kim idam bhavatā prāptam iha āgamanajam phalam
vāsaḥ ayam iha kālam tu kiyantam nau bhaviṣyati
6. What is this result (phalam) that you have obtained from coming here? And how long will our stay here be?
किं नु ते मनसा ध्यातमशुभं धर्मदूषणम् ।
न ह्ययं भवतः स्वल्पो व्यभिचारो भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. kiṁ nu te manasā dhyātamaśubhaṁ dharmadūṣaṇam ,
na hyayaṁ bhavataḥ svalpo vyabhicāro bhaviṣyati.
7. kim nu te manasā dhyātam aśubham dharma-dūṣaṇam na
hi ayam bhavataḥ svalpaḥ vyabhicāraḥ bhaviṣyati
7. What inauspicious thought, a defilement of the natural law (dharma), has indeed been conceived by your mind? Certainly, this transgression of yours will not be a small one.
सुपर्णोऽथाब्रवीद्विप्रं प्रध्यातं वै मया द्विज ।
इमां सिद्धामितो नेतुं तत्र यत्र प्रजापतिः ॥८॥
8. suparṇo'thābravīdvipraṁ pradhyātaṁ vai mayā dvija ,
imāṁ siddhāmito netuṁ tatra yatra prajāpatiḥ.
8. suparṇaḥ atha abravīt vipram pradhyātam vai mayā
dvija imām siddhām itaḥ netum tatra yatra prajāpatiḥ
8. Then Suparṇa said to the brahmin, 'O brahmin, indeed, it has been conceived by me to take this Siddha from here to where Prajāpati resides.'
यत्र देवो महादेवो यत्र विष्णुः सनातनः ।
यत्र धर्मश्च यज्ञश्च तत्रेयं निवसेदिति ॥९॥
9. yatra devo mahādevo yatra viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ ,
yatra dharmaśca yajñaśca tatreyaṁ nivasediti.
9. yatra devaḥ mahādevaḥ yatra viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ
yatra dharmaḥ ca yajñaḥ ca tatra iyam nivaseta iti
9. Where the great god (Mahādeva) is, where the eternal Viṣṇu is, and where the natural law (dharma) and sacred ritual (yajña) are - there she should dwell.
सोऽहं भगवतीं याचे प्रणतः प्रियकाम्यया ।
मयैतन्नाम प्रध्यातं मनसा शोचता किल ॥१०॥
10. so'haṁ bhagavatīṁ yāce praṇataḥ priyakāmyayā ,
mayaitannāma pradhyātaṁ manasā śocatā kila.
10. saḥ aham bhagavatīm yāce praṇataḥ priya-kāmyayā
mayā etad nāma pradhyātam manasā śocatā kila
10. Therefore, I, having bowed respectfully, entreat the revered lady (Siddha) out of desire for my beloved, for this very name (or 'this particular thing') was indeed conceived by my grieving mind.
तदेवं बहुमानात्ते मयेहानीप्सितं कृतम् ।
सुकृतं दुष्कृतं वा त्वं माहात्म्यात्क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. tadevaṁ bahumānātte mayehānīpsitaṁ kṛtam ,
sukṛtaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ vā tvaṁ māhātmyātkṣantumarhasi.
11. तथा एवम् बहुमानात् ते मया इह अनीप्सितम् कृतम् सुकृतम्
दुष्कृतम् वा त्वम् माहात्म्यात् क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि
11. Therefore, because of my great respect for you, I have done this undesired act here. Out of your magnanimity (māhātmya), you ought to forgive whether it was a good deed or a bad deed.
सा तौ तदाब्रवीत्तुष्टा पतगेन्द्रद्विजर्षभौ ।
न भेतव्यं सुपर्णोऽसि सुपर्ण त्यज संभ्रमम् ॥१२॥
12. sā tau tadābravīttuṣṭā patagendradvijarṣabhau ,
na bhetavyaṁ suparṇo'si suparṇa tyaja saṁbhramam.
12. सा तौ तदा अब्रवीत् तुष्टा पतगेन्द्रद्विजर्षभौ
न भेतव्यम् सुपर्णः असि सुपर्ण त्यज संभ्रमम्
12. Pleased, she then said to those two, the foremost among birds and twice-borns (dvija): 'There is no need to fear; you are Suparṇa. O Suparṇa, abandon your agitation.'
निन्दितास्मि त्वया वत्स न च निन्दां क्षमाम्यहम् ।
लोकेभ्यः स परिभ्रश्येद्यो मां निन्देत पापकृत् ॥१३॥
13. ninditāsmi tvayā vatsa na ca nindāṁ kṣamāmyaham ,
lokebhyaḥ sa paribhraśyedyo māṁ nindeta pāpakṛt.
13. निन्दिता अस्मि त्वया वत्स न च निन्दाम् क्षमामि अहम्
लोकेभ्यः सः परिभ्रश्येत् यः माम् निन्देत पापकृत्
13. O child, I have been reviled by you, and I do not forgive such criticism. That evil-doer (pāpakṛt) who criticizes me shall be cast out from all worlds.
हीनयालक्षणैः सर्वैस्तथानिन्दितया मया ।
आचारं प्रतिगृह्णन्त्या सिद्धिः प्राप्तेयमुत्तमा ॥१४॥
14. hīnayālakṣaṇaiḥ sarvaistathāninditayā mayā ,
ācāraṁ pratigṛhṇantyā siddhiḥ prāpteyamuttamā.
14. हीनया अलक्षणैः सर्वैः तथा अनिन्दितया मया आचारम्
प्रतिगृह्णन्त्या सिद्धिः प्राप्ता इयम् उत्तमा
14. By me, who am devoid of all bad characteristics (alakṣaṇa) and thus unblemished, and by me observing the proper conduct (ācāra), this supreme achievement (siddhi) has been attained.
आचाराल्लभते धर्ममाचाराल्लभते धनम् ।
आचाराच्छ्रियमाप्नोति आचारो हन्त्यलक्षणम् ॥१५॥
15. ācārāllabhate dharmamācārāllabhate dhanam ,
ācārācchriyamāpnoti ācāro hantyalakṣaṇam.
15. ācārāt labhate dharmam ācārāt labhate dhanam
ācārāt śriyam āpnoti ācāraḥ hanti alakṣaṇam
15. Good conduct leads to the attainment of natural law (dharma), wealth, and prosperity. Indeed, good conduct dispels all misfortune.
तदायुष्मन्खगपते यथेष्टं गम्यतामितः ।
न च ते गर्हणीयापि गर्हितव्याः स्त्रियः क्वचित् ॥१६॥
16. tadāyuṣmankhagapate yatheṣṭaṁ gamyatāmitaḥ ,
na ca te garhaṇīyāpi garhitavyāḥ striyaḥ kvacit.
16. tadāyuṣman khagapate yathā iṣṭam gamyatām itaḥ na
ca te garhaṇīyā api garhitavyāḥ striyaḥ kvacit
16. Therefore, O long-lived one, O lord of birds, you may depart from here as you desire. And by no means should women, even if blameworthy, ever be condemned by you.
भवितासि यथापूर्वं बलवीर्यसमन्वितः ।
बभूवतुस्ततस्तस्य पक्षौ द्रविणवत्तरौ ॥१७॥
17. bhavitāsi yathāpūrvaṁ balavīryasamanvitaḥ ,
babhūvatustatastasya pakṣau draviṇavattarau.
17. bhavitā asi yathāpūrvam balavīryasamanvitaḥ
babhūvatuḥ tataḥ tasya pakṣau draviṇavattarau
17. You shall be endowed with strength and valor just as you were before. Immediately thereafter, his two wings became more powerful.
अनुज्ञातश्च शाण्डिल्या यथागतमुपागमत् ।
नैव चासादयामास तथारूपांस्तुरंगमान् ॥१८॥
18. anujñātaśca śāṇḍilyā yathāgatamupāgamat ,
naiva cāsādayāmāsa tathārūpāṁsturaṁgamān.
18. anujñātaḥ ca śāṇḍilyā yathāgatam upāgamat
na eva ca āsādayāmāsa tathārūpān turaṃgamān
18. And, having received permission from Śāṇḍilī, he went back the way he had come. However, he never did find horses of such an appearance again.
विश्वामित्रोऽथ तं दृष्ट्वा गालवं चाध्वनि स्थितम् ।
उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठो वैनतेयस्य संनिधौ ॥१९॥
19. viśvāmitro'tha taṁ dṛṣṭvā gālavaṁ cādhvani sthitam ,
uvāca vadatāṁ śreṣṭho vainateyasya saṁnidhau.
19. viśvāmitraḥ atha tam dṛṣṭvā gālavam ca adhvani
sthitam uvāca vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ vainateyasya saṃnidhau
19. Then Viśvāmitra, the most eloquent among speakers, seeing him and Gālava standing on the road, spoke in the presence of Vainateya (Garuḍa).
यस्त्वया स्वयमेवार्थः प्रतिज्ञातो मम द्विज ।
तस्य कालोऽपवर्गस्य यथा वा मन्यते भवान् ॥२०॥
20. yastvayā svayamevārthaḥ pratijñāto mama dvija ,
tasya kālo'pavargasya yathā vā manyate bhavān.
20. yaḥ tvayā svayam eva arthaḥ pratijñātaḥ mama dvija
tasya kālaḥ apavargasya yathā vā manyate bhavān
20. O twice-born (dvija), regarding that matter which you yourself promised to me, this is the time for its completion, or as you yourself deem appropriate.
प्रतीक्षिष्याम्यहं कालमेतावन्तं तथा परम् ।
यथा संसिध्यते विप्र स मार्गस्तु निशम्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. pratīkṣiṣyāmyahaṁ kālametāvantaṁ tathā param ,
yathā saṁsidhyate vipra sa mārgastu niśamyatām.
21. pratīkṣiṣyāmi aham kālam etāvantam tathā param
yathā saṃsidhyate vipra saḥ mārgaḥ tu niśamyatām
21. I will wait for this period and even longer, O wise one (vipra), for its accomplishment. However, let that method (mārga) be made known to me.
सुपर्णोऽथाब्रवीद्दीनं गालवं भृशदुःखितम् ।
प्रत्यक्षं खल्विदानीं मे विश्वामित्रो यदुक्तवान् ॥२२॥
22. suparṇo'thābravīddīnaṁ gālavaṁ bhṛśaduḥkhitam ,
pratyakṣaṁ khalvidānīṁ me viśvāmitro yaduktavān.
22. suparṇaḥ atha abravīt dīnam gālavam bhṛśaduḥkhitam
pratyakṣam khalu idānīm me viśvāmitraḥ yat uktavān
22. Then Suparṇa (Garuḍa) spoke to Gālava, who was distressed and deeply sorrowful: "Indeed, what Viśvāmitra has said is now clear to me."
तदागच्छ द्विजश्रेष्ठ मन्त्रयिष्याव गालव ।
नादत्त्वा गुरवे शक्यं कृत्स्नमर्थं त्वयासितुम् ॥२३॥
23. tadāgaccha dvijaśreṣṭha mantrayiṣyāva gālava ,
nādattvā gurave śakyaṁ kṛtsnamarthaṁ tvayāsitum.
23. tadā āgaccha dvijaśreṣṭha mantrayiṣyāva gālava na
adatvā gurave śakyam kṛtsnam artham tvayā āsitum
23. Come then, O best of the twice-born (dvija), Gālava, we shall consult. It is not possible for you to keep the entire sum without having given it to your guru.
