1.
Saṃjaya said: O Great King (Mahārāja), then all those kings returned to their own abodes, once Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, had become silent.

When Karna (Rādheya), that best among men (puruṣarṣabha), heard that Bhishma had been struck down, he felt a slight tremor of fear and quickly went to him.

3.
He then saw that great-souled being, lying on a bed of arrows, appearing like the divine lord Kartikeya (Kārttikeya) lying on his birth-bed.

Then, the greatly radiant Karna (Vṛṣa), with a tearful throat, approached that hero (Bhishma), who had his eyes closed, and fell at his feet.

5.
"I am Karna (Rādheya), O best of the Kurus; I am always before your eyes, and intensely disliked, though blameless," thus he spoke to him.

Hearing that, the elder of the Kurus, who had forcibly closed his eyes, slowly opened them and, looking up with affection, spoke these words.

7.
Seeing the seat empty and dismissing the guards, Bhishma (gāṅgeya) embraced him with one arm, just like a father embraces his son.

And I have no hatred for you, my dear (tāta); I tell you the truth. But I spoke harsh words for the sake of diminishing your glory.

11.
Indeed, my thought (mati) is that you hate the Pāṇḍavas without cause, O son of Sūrya (Sūryanandana), because of which you have often been harshly admonished.

I know your valor (vīrya) in battle, which is unbearable for enemies, and your Brahmin-devotion (brāhmaṇyatā), and your heroism (śaurya), and your supreme proficiency in giving (dāna).

O Karna, having gone to the capital city, you alone, the archer, crushed kings in battle for the sake of that Kuru king (Duryodhana).

And similarly, the mighty King Jarāsaṃdha, who was difficult to approach and boasted in battle, was not your equal.

23.
O giver of many gifts (bhūridakṣiṇa), all my wealth, my very body, and whatever noble fame I possessed, were sacrificed by me for Duryodhana's sake. Relying on Suyodhana, I have always angered the Pandavas.

Indeed, that which is bound to happen cannot be averted. Who would dare to avert destiny (daiva) through human effort?

The Pāṇḍavas and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) are completely known to me. They are unconquerable by other men; therefore, we are eager to challenge them.

With anger and agitation gone, indeed perform your duty (karma) for the king. Act according to your capacity and enthusiasm, having conducted yourself in the manner of the virtuous.

I grant you permission: whatever you desire, obtain it. You will certainly attain the realms won through the warrior's natural law (dharma); there is no doubt.

Fight without ego (ahaṅkāra), relying on strength and valor. For indeed, for a kshatriya, there is no other course of action (dharma) superior to battle.

Indeed, I made prolonged efforts for peace for a very long time, but I was unable to accomplish it. For where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory.
