संजय उवाच ।
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे जग्मुः स्वानालयान्पुनः ।
तूष्णींभूते महाराज भीष्मे शंतनुनन्दने ॥१॥

tataste pārthivāḥ sarve jagmuḥ svānālayānpunaḥ ,
tūṣṇīṁbhūte mahārāja bhīṣme śaṁtanunandane.

1. saṃjaya uvāca: mahārāja,
tataḥ bhiṣme śaṃtanunandane tūṣṇīmbhūte (sati) te sarve pārthivāḥ punaḥ svān ālayān jagmuḥ.
1. Saṃjaya said: O Great King (Mahārāja), then all those kings returned to their own abodes, once Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, had become silent.
श्रुत्वा तु निहतं भीष्मं राधेयः पुरुषर्षभः ।
ईषदागतसंत्रासः त्वरयोपजगाम ह ॥२॥
2. śrutvā tu nihataṁ bhīṣmaṁ rādheyaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
īṣadāgatasaṁtrāsaḥ tvarayopajagāma ha.
2. śrutvā tu nihatam bhīṣmam rādheyaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ
īṣadāgatasaṃtrāsaḥ tvarayā upajagāma ha

2. When Karna (Rādheya), that best among men (puruṣarṣabha), heard that Bhishma had been struck down, he felt a slight tremor of fear and quickly went to him.
स ददर्श महात्मानं शरतल्पगतं तदा ।
जन्मशय्यागतं देवं कार्त्तिकेयमिव प्रभुम् ॥३॥
3. sa dadarśa mahātmānaṁ śaratalpagataṁ tadā ,
janmaśayyāgataṁ devaṁ kārttikeyamiva prabhum.
3. sa dadarśa mahātmānam śaratpalpagatam tadā
janmaśayyāgatam devam kārttikeyam iva prabhum
3. sa tadā śaratpalpagatam janmaśayyāgatam
mahātmānam devam prabhum kārttikeyam iva dadarśa
3. He then saw that great-souled being, lying on a bed of arrows, appearing like the divine lord Kartikeya (Kārttikeya) lying on his birth-bed.
निमीलिताक्षं तं वीरं साश्रुकण्ठस्तदा वृषः ।
अभ्येत्य पादयोस्तस्य निपपात महाद्युतिः ॥४॥
4. nimīlitākṣaṁ taṁ vīraṁ sāśrukaṇṭhastadā vṛṣaḥ ,
abhyetya pādayostasya nipapāta mahādyutiḥ.
4. nimīlitākṣam tam vīram sāśrukaṇṭhaḥ tadā vṛṣaḥ
abhyetya pādayoḥ tasya nipapāta mahādyutiḥ
4. tadā mahādyutiḥ vṛṣaḥ sāśrukaṇṭhaḥ nimīlitākṣam
tam vīram abhyetya tasya pādayoḥ nipapāta
4. Then, the greatly radiant Karna (Vṛṣa), with a tearful throat, approached that hero (Bhishma), who had his eyes closed, and fell at his feet.
राधेयोऽहं कुरुश्रेष्ठ नित्यं चाक्षिगतस्तव ।
द्वेष्योऽत्यन्तमनागाः सन्निति चैनमुवाच ह ॥५॥
5. rādheyo'haṁ kuruśreṣṭha nityaṁ cākṣigatastava ,
dveṣyo'tyantamanāgāḥ sanniti cainamuvāca ha.
5. rādheyaḥ aham kuruśreṣṭha nityam ca akṣigataḥ tava
dveṣyaḥ atyantam anāgāḥ san iti ca enam uvāca ha
5. kuruśreṣṭha aham rādheyaḥ (asmi).
tava nityam akṣigataḥ ca atyantam dveṣyaḥ anāgāḥ san (api) iti enam ca ha uvāca.
5. "I am Karna (Rādheya), O best of the Kurus; I am always before your eyes, and intensely disliked, though blameless," thus he spoke to him.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कुरुवृद्धः स बलात्संवृत्तलोचनः ।
शनैरुद्वीक्ष्य सस्नेहमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. tacchrutvā kuruvṛddhaḥ sa balātsaṁvṛttalocanaḥ ,
śanairudvīkṣya sasnehamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
6. tat śrutvā kuru-vṛddhaḥ sa balāt saṃvṛtta-locanaḥ
śanaiḥ udvīkṣya sasneham idam vacanam abravīt
6. sa kuru-vṛddhaḥ tat śrutvā balāt saṃvṛtta-locanaḥ
śanaiḥ udvīkṣya sasneham idam vacanam abravīt
6. Hearing that, the elder of the Kurus, who had forcibly closed his eyes, slowly opened them and, looking up with affection, spoke these words.
रहितं धिष्ण्यमालोक्य समुत्सार्य च रक्षिणः ।
पितेव पुत्रं गाङ्गेयः परिष्वज्यैकबाहुना ॥७॥
7. rahitaṁ dhiṣṇyamālokya samutsārya ca rakṣiṇaḥ ,
piteva putraṁ gāṅgeyaḥ pariṣvajyaikabāhunā.
7. rahitam dhiṣṇyam ālokya samutsārya ca rakṣiṇaḥ
pitā iva putram gāṅgeyaḥ pariṣvajya eka-bāhunā
7. gāṅgeyaḥ rahitam dhiṣṇyam ālokya rakṣiṇaḥ ca
samutsārya pitā iva eka-bāhunā putram pariṣvajya
7. Seeing the seat empty and dismissing the guards, Bhishma (gāṅgeya) embraced him with one arm, just like a father embraces his son.
एह्येहि मे विप्रतीप स्पर्धसे त्वं मया सह ।
यदि मां नाभिगच्छेथा न ते श्रेयो भवेद्ध्रुवम् ॥८॥
8. ehyehi me vipratīpa spardhase tvaṁ mayā saha ,
yadi māṁ nābhigacchethā na te śreyo bhaveddhruvam.
8. ehi ehi me vipratīpa spardhase tvam mayā saha yadi
mām na abhigacchethāḥ na te śreyaḥ bhavet dhruvam
8. he vipratīpa! tvam mayā saha spardhase ehi ehi! yadi mām na abhigacchethāḥ,
na te śreyaḥ dhruvam bhavet
8. "Come, come, my adversary! You challenge me. If you do not approach me, surely no good will come to you."
कौन्तेयस्त्वं न राधेयो विदितो नारदान्मम ।
कृष्णद्वैपायनाच्चैव केशवाच्च न संशयः ॥९॥
9. kaunteyastvaṁ na rādheyo vidito nāradānmama ,
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāccaiva keśavācca na saṁśayaḥ.
9. kaunteyaḥ tvam na rādheyaḥ viditaḥ nāradāt mama
kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyanāt ca eva keśavāt ca na saṃśayaḥ
9. tvam kaunteyaḥ,
na rādheyaḥ mama nāradāt kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyanāt ca eva keśavāt ca (idam) viditaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
9. "You are the son of Kunti, not the son of Radha. This is known to me from Narada, and indeed from Krishna Dvaipayana (Vyasa) and Keshava (Krishna); there is no doubt."
न च द्वेषोऽस्ति मे तात त्वयि सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ।
तेजोवधनिमित्तं तु परुषाण्यहमुक्तवान् ॥१०॥
10. na ca dveṣo'sti me tāta tvayi satyaṁ bravīmi te ,
tejovadhanimittaṁ tu paruṣāṇyahamuktavān.
10. na ca dveṣaḥ asti me tāta tvayi satyam bravīmi
te tejo-vadha-nimittam tu paruṣāṇi aham uktavān
10. tāta,
te tvayi me dveṣaḥ ca na asti.
satyam bravīmi.
tu tejo-vadha-nimittam aham paruṣāṇi uktavān.
10. And I have no hatred for you, my dear (tāta); I tell you the truth. But I spoke harsh words for the sake of diminishing your glory.
अकस्मात्पाण्डवान्हि त्वं द्विषसीति मतिर्मम ।
येनासि बहुशो रूक्षं चोदितः सूर्यनन्दन ॥११॥
11. akasmātpāṇḍavānhi tvaṁ dviṣasīti matirmama ,
yenāsi bahuśo rūkṣaṁ coditaḥ sūryanandana.
11. akasmāt pāṇḍavān hi tvam dviṣasi iti matiḥ mama
yena asi bahuśaḥ rūkṣam coditaḥ sūryanandana
11. sūryanandana,
tvam akasmāt pāṇḍavān dviṣasi iti mama matiḥ hi.
yena (kāraṇena) tvam bahuśaḥ rūkṣam coditaḥ asi.
11. Indeed, my thought (mati) is that you hate the Pāṇḍavas without cause, O son of Sūrya (Sūryanandana), because of which you have often been harshly admonished.
जानामि समरे वीर्यं शत्रुभिर्दुःसहं तव ।
ब्रह्मण्यतां च शौर्यं च दाने च परमां गतिम् ॥१२॥
12. jānāmi samare vīryaṁ śatrubhirduḥsahaṁ tava ,
brahmaṇyatāṁ ca śauryaṁ ca dāne ca paramāṁ gatim.
12. jānāmi samare vīryam śatrubhiḥ duḥsaham tava
brāhmaṇyatām ca śauryaṃ ca dāne ca paramām gatim
12. tava samare śatrubhiḥ duḥsaham vīryam jānāmi.
ca brāhmaṇyatām,
ca śauryaṃ,
ca dāne paramām gatim (jānāmi).
12. I know your valor (vīrya) in battle, which is unbearable for enemies, and your Brahmin-devotion (brāhmaṇyatā), and your heroism (śaurya), and your supreme proficiency in giving (dāna).
न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्पुरुषेष्वमरोपम ।
कुलभेदं च मत्वाहं सदा परुषमुक्तवान् ॥१३॥
13. na tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścitpuruṣeṣvamaropama ,
kulabhedaṁ ca matvāhaṁ sadā paruṣamuktavān.
13. na tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścit puruṣeṣu amaropama
kulabhedam ca matvā aham sadā paruṣam uktavān
13. amaropama,
puruṣeṣu tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścit na (asti).
ca kulabhedam matvā,
aham sadā paruṣam uktavān.
13. O god-like one (amaropama), no one among men is equal to you. And considering the discord within the family, I always spoke harsh words.
इष्वस्त्रे भारसंधाने लाघवेऽस्त्रबले तथा ।
सदृशः फल्गुनेनासि कृष्णेन च महात्मना ॥१४॥
14. iṣvastre bhārasaṁdhāne lāghave'strabale tathā ,
sadṛśaḥ phalgunenāsi kṛṣṇena ca mahātmanā.
14. iṣu astre bhāra-sandhāne lāghave astra-bale
tathā sadṛśaḥ phalgunena asi kṛṣṇena ca mahātmanā
14. asi phalgunena ca mahātmanā kṛṣṇena ca iṣu astre
bhāra-sandhāne lāghave tathā astra-bale sadṛśaḥ
14. You are equal to Arjuna and to the great-souled Krishna in archery, in the skill of loading a heavy bow, in swiftness, and in the power of weapons.
कर्ण राजपुरं गत्वा त्वयैकेन धनुष्मता ।
तस्यार्थे कुरुराजस्य राजानो मृदिता युधि ॥१५॥
15. karṇa rājapuraṁ gatvā tvayaikena dhanuṣmatā ,
tasyārthe kururājasya rājāno mṛditā yudhi.
15. karṇa rāja-puraṃ gatvā tvayā ekena dhanuṣmatā
tasya arthe kuru-rājasya rājānaḥ mṛditāḥ yudhi
15. karṇa rāja-puraṃ gatvā ekena dhanuṣmatā tvayā
tasya kuru-rājasya arthe yudhi rājānaḥ mṛditāḥ
15. O Karna, having gone to the capital city, you alone, the archer, crushed kings in battle for the sake of that Kuru king (Duryodhana).
तथा च बलवान्राजा जरासंधो दुरासदः ।
समरे समरश्लाघी त्वया न सदृशोऽभवत् ॥१६॥
16. tathā ca balavānrājā jarāsaṁdho durāsadaḥ ,
samare samaraślāghī tvayā na sadṛśo'bhavat.
16. tathā ca balavān rājā jarāsaṃdhaḥ durāsadaḥ
samare samara-ślāghī tvayā na sadṛśaḥ abhavat
16. tathā ca balavān rājā durāsadaḥ samare
samara-ślāghī jarāsaṃdhaḥ tvayā sadṛśaḥ na abhavat
16. And similarly, the mighty King Jarāsaṃdha, who was difficult to approach and boasted in battle, was not your equal.
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च तेजसार्क इवापरः ।
देवगर्भोऽजितः संख्ये मनुष्यैरधिको भुवि ॥१७॥
17. brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca tejasārka ivāparaḥ ,
devagarbho'jitaḥ saṁkhye manuṣyairadhiko bhuvi.
17. brahmaṇyaḥ satya-vādī ca tejasā arkaḥ iva aparaḥ
deva-garbhaḥ ajitaḥ saṃkhye manuṣyaiḥ adhikaḥ bhuvi
17. brahmaṇyaḥ satya-vādī ca tejasā aparaḥ arkaḥ iva
deva-garbhaḥ saṃkhye ajitaḥ manuṣyaiḥ adhikaḥ bhuvi
17. He is devoted to sacred knowledge, truthful, and like a second sun in his radiance. Of divine origin and unconquered in battle, he is superior among men on earth.
व्यपनीतोऽद्य मन्युर्मे यस्त्वां प्रति पुरा कृतः ।
दैवं पुरुषकारेण न शक्यमतिवर्तितुम् ॥१८॥
18. vyapanīto'dya manyurme yastvāṁ prati purā kṛtaḥ ,
daivaṁ puruṣakāreṇa na śakyamativartitum.
18. vyapanītaḥ adya manyuḥ me yaḥ tvām prati purā
kṛtaḥ daivam puruṣakāreṇa na śakyam ativartitum
18. me manyuḥ yaḥ purā tvām prati kṛtaḥ adya vyapanītaḥ
daivam puruṣakāreṇa ativartitum na śakyam
18. My anger, which was previously directed towards you, has been dispelled today. Destiny (daivam) cannot be overcome by human effort.
सोदर्याः पाण्डवा वीरा भ्रातरस्तेऽरिसूदन ।
संगच्छ तैर्महाबाहो मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥१९॥
19. sodaryāḥ pāṇḍavā vīrā bhrātaraste'risūdana ,
saṁgaccha tairmahābāho mama cedicchasi priyam.
19. sodaryāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ vīrāḥ bhrātaraḥ te arisūdana
saṅgaccha taiḥ mahābāho mama cet icchasi priyam
19. arisūdana mahābāho pāṇḍavāḥ vīrāḥ te sodaryāḥ
bhrātaraḥ cet mama priyam icchasi taiḥ saṅgaccha
19. O destroyer of foes (arisūdana), the heroic Pāṇḍavas are your uterine brothers. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), if you desire what is pleasing to me, then join with them.
मया भवतु निर्वृत्तं वैरमादित्यनन्दन ।
पृथिव्यां सर्वराजानो भवन्त्वद्य निरामयाः ॥२०॥
20. mayā bhavatu nirvṛttaṁ vairamādityanandana ,
pṛthivyāṁ sarvarājāno bhavantvadya nirāmayāḥ.
20. mayā bhavatu nirvṛttam vairam ādityanandana
pṛthivyām sarvarājānaḥ bhavantu adya nirāmayāḥ
20. ādityanandana mayā vairam nirvṛttam bhavatu
adya pṛthivyām sarvarājānaḥ nirāmayāḥ bhavantu
20. O son of the Sun (ādityanandana), let the enmity be concluded by me. Let all kings on earth be free from distress today.
कर्ण उवाच ।
जानाम्यहं महाप्राज्ञ सर्वमेतन्न संशयः ।
यथा वदसि दुर्धर्ष कौन्तेयोऽहं न सूतजः ॥२१॥
21. karṇa uvāca ,
jānāmyahaṁ mahāprājña sarvametanna saṁśayaḥ ,
yathā vadasi durdharṣa kaunteyo'haṁ na sūtajaḥ.
21. karṇa uvāca jānāmi aham mahāprājña sarvam etat na
saṃśayaḥ yathā vadasi durdharṣa kaunteyaḥ aham na sūtajaḥ
21. karṇaḥ uvāca mahāprājña durdharṣa aham etat sarvam jānāmi
saṃśayaḥ na yathā vadasi aham kaunteyaḥ na sūtajaḥ
21. Karna said: 'O greatly wise one (mahāprājña), I know all this, there is no doubt. O unconquerable one (durdharṣa), as you say, I am a son of Kuntī, not a charioteer's son.'
अवकीर्णस्त्वहं कुन्त्या सूतेन च विवर्धितः ।
भुक्त्वा दुर्योधनैश्वर्यं न मिथ्या कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥२२॥
22. avakīrṇastvahaṁ kuntyā sūtena ca vivardhitaḥ ,
bhuktvā duryodhanaiśvaryaṁ na mithyā kartumutsahe.
22. avakīrṇaḥ tu aham kuntyā sūtena ca vivardhitaḥ
bhuktvā duryodhanaiśvaryaṃ na mithyā kartuṃ utsahe
22. aham kuntyā avakīrṇaḥ tu sūtena ca vivardhitaḥ.
duryodhanaiśvaryaṃ bhuktvā na mithyā kartuṃ utsahe.
22. Though I was abandoned by Kunti and raised by the charioteer, having enjoyed Duryodhana's sovereignty, I cannot bring myself to make it false (by betraying him).
वसु चैव शरीरं च यदुदारं तथा यशः ।
सर्वं दुर्योधनस्यार्थे त्यक्तं मे भूरिदक्षिण ।
कोपिताः पाण्डवा नित्यं मयाश्रित्य सुयोधनम् ॥२३॥
23. vasu caiva śarīraṁ ca yadudāraṁ tathā yaśaḥ ,
sarvaṁ duryodhanasyārthe tyaktaṁ me bhūridakṣiṇa ,
kopitāḥ pāṇḍavā nityaṁ mayāśritya suyodhanam.
23. vasu ca eva śarīraṃ ca yat udāraṃ
tathā yaśaḥ sarvaṃ duryodhanasya arthe
tyaktaṃ me bhūridakṣiṇa kopitāḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ nityaṃ mayā āśritya suyodhanaṃ
23. bhūridakṣiṇa! vasu ca eva,
śarīraṃ ca,
yat udāraṃ tathā yaśaḥ,
sarvaṃ me duryodhanasya arthe tyaktaṃ.
mayā suyodhanaṃ āśritya pāṇḍavāḥ nityaṃ kopitāḥ.
23. O giver of many gifts (bhūridakṣiṇa), all my wealth, my very body, and whatever noble fame I possessed, were sacrificed by me for Duryodhana's sake. Relying on Suyodhana, I have always angered the Pandavas.
अवश्यभावी वै योऽर्थो न स शक्यो निवर्तितुम् ।
दैवं पुरुषकारेण को निवर्तितुमुत्सहेत् ॥२४॥
24. avaśyabhāvī vai yo'rtho na sa śakyo nivartitum ,
daivaṁ puruṣakāreṇa ko nivartitumutsahet.
24. avaśyabhāvī vai yaḥ arthaḥ na saḥ śakyaḥ nivartituṃ
daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa kaḥ nivartituṃ utsahet
24. yaḥ arthaḥ avaśyabhāvī vai,
saḥ na nivartituṃ śakyaḥ.
kaḥ puruṣakāreṇa daivaṃ nivartituṃ utsahet?
24. Indeed, that which is bound to happen cannot be averted. Who would dare to avert destiny (daiva) through human effort?
पृथिवीक्षयशंसीनि निमित्तानि पितामह ।
भवद्भिरुपलब्धानि कथितानि च संसदि ॥२५॥
25. pṛthivīkṣayaśaṁsīni nimittāni pitāmaha ,
bhavadbhirupalabdhāni kathitāni ca saṁsadi.
25. pṛthivīkṣayaśaṃsinī nimittāni pitāmaha
bhavadbhiḥ upalabdḥāni kathitāni ca saṃsadi
25. pitāmaha! pṛthivīkṣayaśaṃsinī nimittāni bhavadbhiḥ upalabdḥāni ca saṃsadi kathitāni (santi).
25. O Grandfather (Bhishma), omens foretelling the destruction of the earth were perceived by you and spoken of in the assembly.
पाण्डवा वासुदेवश्च विदिता मम सर्वशः ।
अजेयाः पुरुषैरन्यैरिति तांश्चोत्सहामहे ॥२६॥
26. pāṇḍavā vāsudevaśca viditā mama sarvaśaḥ ,
ajeyāḥ puruṣairanyairiti tāṁścotsahāmahe.
26. pāṇḍavāḥ vāsudevaḥ ca viditā mama sarvaśaḥ
ajeyāḥ puruṣaiḥ anyaiḥ iti tān ca utsaha-mahe
26. pāṇḍavāḥ ca vāsudevaḥ mama sarvaśaḥ viditāḥ.
te anyaiḥ puruṣaiḥ ajeyāḥ iti tān ca [vayam] utsaha-mahe.
26. The Pāṇḍavas and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) are completely known to me. They are unconquerable by other men; therefore, we are eager to challenge them.
अनुजानीष्व मां तात युद्धे प्रीतमनाः सदा ।
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया वीर युध्येयमिति मे मतिः ॥२७॥
27. anujānīṣva māṁ tāta yuddhe prītamanāḥ sadā ,
anujñātastvayā vīra yudhyeyamiti me matiḥ.
27. anu-jānīṣva mām tāta yuddhe prīta-manāḥ sadā
anu-jñātaḥ tvayā vīra yudhyeya iti me matiḥ
27. tāta,
mām yuddhe sadā prīta-manāḥ anu-jānīṣva.
vīra,
tvayā anu-jñātaḥ,
yudhyeya iti me matiḥ.
27. O dear father, always with a mind pleased by battle, grant me permission. O hero, it is my conviction that, once permitted by you, I shall fight.
दुरुक्तं विप्रतीपं वा संरम्भाच्चापलात्तथा ।
यन्मयापकृतं किंचित्तदनुक्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥२८॥
28. duruktaṁ vipratīpaṁ vā saṁrambhāccāpalāttathā ,
yanmayāpakṛtaṁ kiṁcittadanukṣantumarhasi.
28. duruktam vipratīpam vā saṃrambhāt ca cāpalāt tathā
yat mayā apakṛtam kiñcit tat anu-kṣantum arhasi
28. saṃrambhāt ca cāpalāt tathā,
mayā yat duruktam vā vipratīpam vā kiñcit apakṛtam [asti],
tat anu-kṣantum arhasi.
28. Whatever harsh or contrary words, or any wrong (karma) at all, I may have committed out of excitement, impulsiveness, or fickleness, you ought to forgive that.
भीष्म उवाच ।
न चेच्छक्यमथोत्स्रष्टुं वैरमेतत्सुदारुणम् ।
अनुजानामि कर्ण त्वां युध्यस्व स्वर्गकाम्यया ॥२९॥
29. bhīṣma uvāca ,
na cecchakyamathotsraṣṭuṁ vairametatsudāruṇam ,
anujānāmi karṇa tvāṁ yudhyasva svargakāmyayā.
29. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca na cet śakyam atha ut-sraṣṭum vairam etat
su-dāruṇam anu-jānāmi karṇa tvām yudhyasva svarga-kāmyayā
29. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: cet etat su-dāruṇam vairam ut-sraṣṭum na śakyam,
[tarhi] atha karṇa,
tvām anu-jānāmi.
svarga-kāmyayā yudhyasva.
29. Bhīṣma said: 'If it is not possible to renounce this exceedingly dreadful enmity, then, Karṇa, I grant you permission. Fight with the aspiration for heaven!'
विमन्युर्गतसंरम्भः कुरु कर्म नृपस्य हि ।
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं सतां वृत्तेषु वृत्तवान् ॥३०॥
30. vimanyurgatasaṁrambhaḥ kuru karma nṛpasya hi ,
yathāśakti yathotsāhaṁ satāṁ vṛtteṣu vṛttavān.
30. vimanyuḥ gatasaṃrambhaḥ kuru karma nṛpasya hi
yathāśakti yathā utsāham satām vṛtteṣu vṛttavān
30. vimanyuḥ gatasaṃrambhaḥ nṛpasya karma hi kuru
yathāśakti yathā utsāham satām vṛtteṣu vṛttavān
30. With anger and agitation gone, indeed perform your duty (karma) for the king. Act according to your capacity and enthusiasm, having conducted yourself in the manner of the virtuous.
अहं त्वामनुजानामि यदिच्छसि तदाप्नुहि ।
क्षत्रधर्मजिताँल्लोकान्संप्राप्स्यसि न संशयः ॥३१॥
31. ahaṁ tvāmanujānāmi yadicchasi tadāpnuhi ,
kṣatradharmajitāँllokānsaṁprāpsyasi na saṁśayaḥ.
31. aham tvām anujānāmi yat icchasi tat āpnuhi
kṣatradharmajitan lokān saṃprāpsyasi na saṃśayaḥ
31. aham tvām anujānāmi yat icchasi tat āpnuhi
kṣatradharmajitan lokān saṃprāpsyasi na saṃśayaḥ
31. I grant you permission: whatever you desire, obtain it. You will certainly attain the realms won through the warrior's natural law (dharma); there is no doubt.
युध्यस्व निरहंकारो बलवीर्यव्यपाश्रयः ।
धर्मो हि युद्धाच्छ्रेयोऽन्यत्क्षत्रियस्य न विद्यते ॥३२॥
32. yudhyasva nirahaṁkāro balavīryavyapāśrayaḥ ,
dharmo hi yuddhācchreyo'nyatkṣatriyasya na vidyate.
32. yudhyasva nirahaṃkāraḥ balavīryavyapāśrayaḥ dharmaḥ
hi yuddhāt śreyaḥ anyat kṣatriyasya na vidyate
32. nirahaṃkāraḥ balavīryavyapāśrayaḥ yudhyasva hi
kṣatriyasya yuddhāt anyat śreyaḥ dharmaḥ na vidyate
32. Fight without ego (ahaṅkāra), relying on strength and valor. For indeed, for a kshatriya, there is no other course of action (dharma) superior to battle.
प्रशमे हि कृतो यत्नः सुचिरात्सुचिरं मया ।
न चैव शकितः कर्तुं यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥३३॥
33. praśame hi kṛto yatnaḥ sucirātsuciraṁ mayā ,
na caiva śakitaḥ kartuṁ yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
33. praśame hi kṛtaḥ yatnaḥ sucirāt suciram mayā na
ca eva śakitaḥ kartum yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
33. hi mayā praśame yatnaḥ sucirāt suciram kṛtaḥ ca
na eva kartum śakitaḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
33. Indeed, I made prolonged efforts for peace for a very long time, but I was unable to accomplish it. For where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory.
संजय उवाच ।
एवं ब्रुवन्तं गाङ्गेयमभिवाद्य प्रसाद्य च ।
राधेयो रथमारुह्य प्रायात्तव सुतं प्रति ॥३४॥
34. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ bruvantaṁ gāṅgeyamabhivādya prasādya ca ,
rādheyo rathamāruhya prāyāttava sutaṁ prati.
34. saṃjaya uvāca evam bruvantaṃ gāṅgeyam abhivādya prasādya
ca rādheyaḥ ratham āruhya prāyāt tava sutaṃ prati
34. saṃjaya uvāca evam gāṅgeyam bruvantaṃ abhivādya ca
prasādya rādheyaḥ ratham āruhya tava sutaṃ prati prāyāt
34. Sanjaya said: Having thus spoken, and having saluted and propitiated Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma), Rādhā's son (Karṇa) mounted his chariot and went towards your son (Duryodhana).
