संजय उवाच ।
तां निशां दुःखशोकार्तौ श्वसन्ताविव चोरगौ ।
निद्रां नैवोपलेभाते वासुदेवधनंजयौ ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tāṁ niśāṁ duḥkhaśokārtau śvasantāviva coragau ,
nidrāṁ naivopalebhāte vāsudevadhanaṁjayau.

1. Sanjaya said: That night, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), afflicted by sorrow and grief, did not obtain any sleep, like two hissing snakes.
नरनारायणौ क्रुद्धौ ज्ञात्वा देवाः सवासवाः ।
व्यथिताश्चिन्तयामासुः किं स्विदेतद्भविष्यति ॥२॥
2. naranārāyaṇau kruddhau jñātvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
vyathitāścintayāmāsuḥ kiṁ svidetadbhaviṣyati.
2. nara-nārāyaṇau kruddhau jñātvā devāḥ sa-vāsavāḥ |
vyathitāḥ cintayām āsuḥ kim svit etat bhaviṣyati

2. Having known Nara and Nārāyaṇa to be enraged, the gods along with Vāsava (Indra) became distressed and wondered, "What indeed will this become?"
ववुश्च दारुणा वाता रूक्षा घोराभिशंसिनः ।
सकबन्धस्तथादित्ये परिघः समदृश्यत ॥३॥
3. vavuśca dāruṇā vātā rūkṣā ghorābhiśaṁsinaḥ ,
sakabandhastathāditye parighaḥ samadṛśyata.
3. vavuḥ ca dāruṇāḥ vātāḥ rūkṣāḥ ghora-abhiśaṃsinaḥ
| sa-kabandhaḥ tathā āditye parighaḥ samadṛśyata

3. Cruel, harsh, and terribly inauspicious winds blew. And likewise, a halo with a headless trunk appeared in the sun.
शुष्काशन्यश्च निष्पेतुः सनिर्घाताः सविद्युतः ।
चचाल चापि पृथिवी सशैलवनकानना ॥४॥
4. śuṣkāśanyaśca niṣpetuḥ sanirghātāḥ savidyutaḥ ,
cacāla cāpi pṛthivī saśailavanakānanā.
4. śuṣka-aśanyaḥ ca niṣpetuḥ sa-nirghātāḥ sa-vidyutaḥ
| cacāla ca api pṛthivī sa-śaila-vana-kānanā

4. And dry thunderbolts fell with claps of thunder and lightning. The earth, along with its mountains, forests, and groves, also trembled.
चुक्षुभुश्च महाराज सागरा मकरालयाः ।
प्रतिस्रोतः प्रवृत्ताश्च तथा गन्तुं समुद्रगाः ॥५॥
5. cukṣubhuśca mahārāja sāgarā makarālayāḥ ,
pratisrotaḥ pravṛttāśca tathā gantuṁ samudragāḥ.
5. cukṣubhuḥ ca mahārāja sāgarāḥ makarālayāḥ
pratistrotaḥ pravṛttāḥ ca tathā gantum samudragāḥ

5. O great king, the oceans, the abodes of sea creatures, became agitated, and similarly, the rivers began to flow against their natural current.
रथाश्वनरनागानां प्रवृत्तमधरोत्तरम् ।
क्रव्यादानां प्रमोदार्थं यमराष्ट्रविवृद्धये ॥६॥
6. rathāśvanaranāgānāṁ pravṛttamadharottaram ,
kravyādānāṁ pramodārthaṁ yamarāṣṭravivṛddhaye.

6. A chaotic, topsy-turvy state involving chariots, horses, men, and elephants arose, to the delight of the scavengers and for the expansion of the realm of Yama (the god of death).
वाहनानि शकृन्मूत्रे मुमुचू रुरुदुश्च ह ।
तान्दृष्ट्वा दारुणान्सर्वानुत्पाताँल्लोमहर्षणान् ॥७॥
7. vāhanāni śakṛnmūtre mumucū ruruduśca ha ,
tāndṛṣṭvā dāruṇānsarvānutpātāँllomaharṣaṇān.
7. vāhanāni śakṛtmūtre mumucuḥ ruruduḥ ca ha tān
dṛṣṭvā dāruṇān sarvān utpātān lomaharṣaṇān
7. vāhanāni śakṛtmūtre mumucuḥ ca ha ruruduḥ tān

7. The mounts discharged dung and urine, and indeed they cried out. Having seen all those dreadful, hair-raising omens...
सर्वे ते व्यथिताः सैन्यास्त्वदीया भरतर्षभ ।
श्रुत्वा महाबलस्योग्रां प्रतिज्ञां सव्यसाचिनः ॥८॥
8. sarve te vyathitāḥ sainyāstvadīyā bharatarṣabha ,
śrutvā mahābalasyogrāṁ pratijñāṁ savyasācinaḥ.
8. sarve te vyathitāḥ sainyāḥ tvadīyāḥ bharatarṣabha
śrutvā mahābalasya ugrām pratijñām savyasācinaḥ
8. bharatarṣabha te tvadīyāḥ sarve sainyāḥ mahābalasya
savyasācinaḥ ugrām pratijñām śrutvā vyathitāḥ
8. O best of Bharatas, all those soldiers of yours became distressed, having heard the fierce vow (pratijñā) of the mighty Savyasācin (Arjuna).
अथ कृष्णं महाबाहुरब्रवीत्पाकशासनिः ।
आश्वासय सुभद्रां त्वं भगिनीं स्नुषया सह ॥९॥
9. atha kṛṣṇaṁ mahābāhurabravītpākaśāsaniḥ ,
āśvāsaya subhadrāṁ tvaṁ bhaginīṁ snuṣayā saha.
9. atha kṛṣṇam mahābāhuḥ abravīt pākaśāsaniḥ
āśvāsaya subhadrām tvam bhaginīm snuṣayā saha
9. atha mahābāhuḥ pākaśāsaniḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt
tvam bhaginīm subhadrām snuṣayā saha āśvāsaya
9. Then Arjuna, the mighty-armed son of Indra, said to Krishna: "You console your sister Subhadra along with your daughter-in-law."
स्नुषा श्वश्र्वानघायस्ते विशोके कुरु माधव ।
साम्ना सत्येन युक्तेन वचसाश्वासय प्रभो ॥१०॥
10. snuṣā śvaśrvānaghāyaste viśoke kuru mādhava ,
sāmnā satyena yuktena vacasāśvāsaya prabho.
10. snuṣā śvaśrvā anaghāyai te viśoke kuru mādhava
sāmnā satyena yuktena vacasā āśvāsaya prabho
10. mādhava he prabho te anaghāyai śvaśrvā snuṣā
viśoke kuru sāmnā satyena yuktena vacasā āśvāsaya
10. O Madhava (Krishna), make your blameless (anagha) mother-in-law (Subhadra) and daughter-in-law (Uttara) free from sorrow. O Lord, console them with gentle words, imbued with truth.
ततोऽर्जुनगृहं गत्वा वासुदेवः सुदुर्मनाः ।
भगिनीं पुत्रशोकार्तामाश्वासयत दुःखिताम् ॥११॥
11. tato'rjunagṛhaṁ gatvā vāsudevaḥ sudurmanāḥ ,
bhaginīṁ putraśokārtāmāśvāsayata duḥkhitām.
11. tataḥ arjunagṛham gatvā vāsudevaḥ sudurmanāḥ
bhaginīm putraśokārtām āśvāsayata duḥkhitām
11. tataḥ sudurmanāḥ vāsudevaḥ arjunagṛham gatvā
putraśokārtām duḥkhitām bhaginīm āśvāsayata
11. Then Vasudeva (Krishna), greatly distressed in mind, went to Arjuna's house and consoled his suffering sister, who was overcome by the sorrow of her son.
मा शोकं कुरु वार्ष्णेयि कुमारं प्रति सस्नुषा ।
सर्वेषां प्राणिनां भीरु निष्ठैषा कालनिर्मिता ॥१२॥
12. mā śokaṁ kuru vārṣṇeyi kumāraṁ prati sasnuṣā ,
sarveṣāṁ prāṇināṁ bhīru niṣṭhaiṣā kālanirmitā.
12. mā śokam kuru vārṣṇeyi kumāram prati sasnuṣā
sarveṣām prāṇinām bhīru niṣṭhā eṣā kālanirmitā
12. vārṣṇeyi mā śokam kuru sasnuṣā kumāram prati bhīru
eṣā sarveṣām prāṇinām niṣṭhā kālanirmitā (asti)
12. O Vārṣṇeyi (Subhadra), do not grieve for the boy (Abhimanyu) along with your daughter-in-law. O timid one, this end (niṣṭhā) for all living beings is ordained by time.
कुले जतस्य वीरस्य क्षत्रियस्य विशेषतः ।
सदृशं मरणं ह्येतत्तव पुत्रस्य मा शुचः ॥१३॥
13. kule jatasya vīrasya kṣatriyasya viśeṣataḥ ,
sadṛśaṁ maraṇaṁ hyetattava putrasya mā śucaḥ.
13. kule jātasyā vīrasya kṣatriyasya viśeṣataḥ
sadṛśam maraṇam hi etat tava putrasya mā śucaḥ
13. tava putrasya kule jātasyā vīrasya viśeṣataḥ
kṣatriyasya etat maraṇam hi sadṛśam mā śucaḥ
13. This death is indeed fitting for your son, who was born in a noble family, especially for a warrior (kṣatriya) hero. Do not grieve.
दिष्ट्या महारथो वीरः पितुस्तुल्यपराक्रमः ।
क्षात्रेण विधिना प्राप्तो वीराभिलषितां गतिम् ॥१४॥
14. diṣṭyā mahāratho vīraḥ pitustulyaparākramaḥ ,
kṣātreṇa vidhinā prāpto vīrābhilaṣitāṁ gatim.
14. diṣṭyā mahārathaḥ vīraḥ pituḥ tulyaparākramaḥ
kṣātreṇa vidhinā prāptaḥ vīrābhilaṣitām gatim
14. diṣṭyā pituḥ tulyaparākramaḥ vīraḥ mahārathaḥ
kṣātreṇa vidhinā vīrābhilaṣitām gatim prāptaḥ
14. Fortunately, that great warrior (mahāratha), the hero whose valor was equal to his father's, has attained the destination (gati) desired by heroes through the warrior's (kṣātra) code of conduct.
जित्वा सुबहुशः शत्रून्प्रेषयित्वा च मृत्यवे ।
गतः पुण्यकृतां लोकान्सर्वकामदुहोऽक्षयान् ॥१५॥
15. jitvā subahuśaḥ śatrūnpreṣayitvā ca mṛtyave ,
gataḥ puṇyakṛtāṁ lokānsarvakāmaduho'kṣayān.
15. jitvā subahuśaḥ śatrūn preṣayitvā ca mṛtyave
gataḥ puṇyakṛtām lokān sarvakāmaduhaḥ akṣayān
15. subahuśaḥ śatrūn jitvā ca mṛtyave preṣayitvā
puṇyakṛtām sarvakāmaduhaḥ akṣayān lokān gataḥ
15. Having conquered enemies many times and dispatched them to death, he has gone to the worlds of those who perform meritorious deeds, worlds that fulfill all desires and are imperishable.
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण श्रुतेन प्रज्ञयापि च ।
सन्तो यां गतिमिच्छन्ति प्राप्तस्तां तव पुत्रकः ॥१६॥
16. tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śrutena prajñayāpi ca ,
santo yāṁ gatimicchanti prāptastāṁ tava putrakaḥ.
16. tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śrutena prajñayā api ca santaḥ
yām gatim icchanti prāptaḥ tām tava putrakaḥ
16. tava putrakaḥ tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śrutena prajñayā
api ca santaḥ yām gatim icchanti tām prāptaḥ
16. Your dear son has attained that destination (gati) which virtuous people (santaḥ) desire through penance (tapas), celibacy (brahmacarya), sacred knowledge, and also by wisdom.
वीरसूर्वीरपत्नी त्वं वीरश्वशुरबान्धवा ।
मा शुचस्तनयं भद्रे गतः स परमां गतिम् ॥१७॥
17. vīrasūrvīrapatnī tvaṁ vīraśvaśurabāndhavā ,
mā śucastanayaṁ bhadre gataḥ sa paramāṁ gatim.
17. vīrasūḥ vīrapatnī tvam vīraśvaśurabāndhavā mā
śucaḥ tanayam bhadre gataḥ saḥ paramām gatim
17. tvam bhadre vīrasūḥ vīrapatnī vīraśvaśurabāndhavā
mā tanayam śucaḥ saḥ paramām gatim gataḥ
17. O gentle lady, you are the mother of a hero, the wife of a hero, and related to heroic in-laws. Do not grieve for your son; he has attained the supreme destination.
प्राप्स्यते चाप्यसौ क्षुद्रः सैन्धवो बालघातकः ।
अस्यावलेपस्य फलं ससुहृद्गणबान्धवः ॥१८॥
18. prāpsyate cāpyasau kṣudraḥ saindhavo bālaghātakaḥ ,
asyāvalepasya phalaṁ sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavaḥ.
18. prāpsyate ca api asau kṣudraḥ saindhavaḥ bālaghātakaḥ
asya avalepasya phalam sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavaḥ
18. asau kṣudraḥ bālaghātakaḥ saindhavaḥ ca api
sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavaḥ asya avalepasya phalam prāpsyate
18. And that wicked Saindhava, the killer of the boy, will certainly receive the consequences of his arrogance, along with his friends, his retinue, and his relatives.
व्युष्टायां तु वरारोहे रजन्यां पापकर्मकृत् ।
न हि मोक्ष्यति पार्थात्स प्रविष्टोऽप्यमरावतीम् ॥१९॥
19. vyuṣṭāyāṁ tu varārohe rajanyāṁ pāpakarmakṛt ,
na hi mokṣyati pārthātsa praviṣṭo'pyamarāvatīm.
19. vyuṣṭāyām tu varārohe rajanyām pāpakarmakṛt na
hi mokṣyati pārthāt saḥ praviṣṭaḥ api amarāvatīm
19. tu varārohe rajanyām vyuṣṭāyām (sati) saḥ pāpakarmakṛt
api amarāvatīm praviṣṭaḥ pārthāt na hi mokṣyati
19. But, O lady of beautiful hips, when the night has passed, that perpetrator of sinful deeds will indeed not escape from Arjuna, even if he enters Amaravati.
श्वः शिरः श्रोष्यसे तस्य सैन्धवस्य रणे हृतम् ।
समन्तपञ्चकाद्बाह्यं विशोका भव मा रुदः ॥२०॥
20. śvaḥ śiraḥ śroṣyase tasya saindhavasya raṇe hṛtam ,
samantapañcakādbāhyaṁ viśokā bhava mā rudaḥ.
20. śvaḥ śiraḥ śroṣyase tasya saindhavasya raṇe hṛtam
samantapañcakāt bāhyam viśokā bhava mā rudaḥ
20. śvaḥ tvam tasya saindhavasya śiraḥ rane hṛtam samantapañcakāt
bāhyam (sthitam) śroṣyase viśokā bhava mā rudaḥ
20. Tomorrow you will hear that the head of that Saindhava has been severed in battle and lies beyond Samantapañcaka. Be free from sorrow; do not weep.
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य गतः शूरः सतां गतिम् ।
यां वयं प्राप्नुयामेह ये चान्ये शस्त्रजीविनः ॥२१॥
21. kṣatradharmaṁ puraskṛtya gataḥ śūraḥ satāṁ gatim ,
yāṁ vayaṁ prāpnuyāmeha ye cānye śastrajīvinaḥ.
21. kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya gataḥ śūraḥ satām gatim
yām vayam prāpnuyāma iha ye ca anye śastrajīvinaḥ
21. śūraḥ kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya satām gatim gataḥ
vayam ca anye śastrajīvinaḥ iha yām prāpnuyāma
21. Upholding the warrior's constitution (dharma), the hero has attained the state of the virtuous. May we and all other professional warriors also attain that (state) here (in this world).
व्यूढोरस्को महाबाहुरनिवर्ती वरप्रणुत् ।
गतस्तव वरारोहे पुत्रः स्वर्गं ज्वरं जहि ॥२२॥
22. vyūḍhorasko mahābāhuranivartī varapraṇut ,
gatastava varārohe putraḥ svargaṁ jvaraṁ jahi.
22. vyūḍhoraskaḥ mahābāhuḥ anivartī varapraṇut
gataḥ tava varārohe putraḥ svargam jvaram jahi
22. varārohe tava putraḥ vyūḍhoraskaḥ mahābāhuḥ
anivartī varapraṇut svargam gataḥ jvaram jahi
22. O lady with lovely hips, your son, broad-chested, mighty-armed, unyielding, and a vanquisher of the best (foes), has gone to heaven. Abandon your anguish.
अनु जातश्च पितरं मातृपक्षं च वीर्यवान् ।
सहस्रशो रिपून्हत्वा हतः शूरो महारथः ॥२३॥
23. anu jātaśca pitaraṁ mātṛpakṣaṁ ca vīryavān ,
sahasraśo ripūnhatvā hataḥ śūro mahārathaḥ.
23. anujātaḥ ca pitaram mātṛpakṣam ca vīryavān
sahasraśaḥ ripūn hatvā hataḥ śūraḥ mahārathaḥ
23. vīryavān mahārathaḥ śūraḥ pitaram ca mātṛpakṣam
ca anujātaḥ sahasraśaḥ ripūn hatvā hataḥ
23. The valorous hero, a great warrior, born resembling both his father and his mother's lineage, was slain after killing thousands of enemies.
आश्वासय स्नुषां राज्ञि मा शुचः क्षत्रिये भृशम् ।
श्वः प्रियं सुमहच्छ्रुत्वा विशोका भव नन्दिनि ॥२४॥
24. āśvāsaya snuṣāṁ rājñi mā śucaḥ kṣatriye bhṛśam ,
śvaḥ priyaṁ sumahacchrutvā viśokā bhava nandini.
24. āśvāsaya snuṣām rājñi mā śucaḥ kṣatriye bhṛśam
śvaḥ priyam sumahat śrutvā viśokā bhava nandini
24. rājñi snuṣām āśvāsaya kṣatriye bhṛśam mā śucaḥ
nandini śvaḥ sumahat priyam śrutvā viśokā bhava
24. O Queen, comfort your daughter-in-law. O warrior woman, do not grieve so intensely. Tomorrow, after hearing very great good news, become free from sorrow, O delightful one.
यत्पार्थेन प्रतिज्ञातं तत्तथा न तदन्यथा ।
चिकीर्षितं हि ते भर्तुर्न भवेज्जातु निष्फलम् ॥२५॥
25. yatpārthena pratijñātaṁ tattathā na tadanyathā ,
cikīrṣitaṁ hi te bharturna bhavejjātu niṣphalam.
25. yat pārthān pratijñātam tat tathā na tat anyathā
cikīrṣitam hi te bhartuḥ na bhavet jātu niṣphalam
25. yat pārthān pratijñātam tat tathā na anyathā tat
hi te bhartuḥ cikīrṣitam jātu niṣphalam na bhavet
25. What was pledged by Arjuna (Pārtha) will indeed be so, and not otherwise. For that which your husband (Arjuna) desires will certainly never be in vain.
यदि च मनुजपन्नगाः पिशाचा रजनिचराः पतगाः सुरासुराश्च ।
रणगतमभियान्ति सिन्धुराजं न स भविता सह तैरपि प्रभाते ॥२६॥
26. yadi ca manujapannagāḥ piśācā; rajanicarāḥ patagāḥ surāsurāśca ,
raṇagatamabhiyānti sindhurājaṁ; na sa bhavitā saha tairapi prabhāte.
26. yadi ca manuja-pannagāḥ piśācāḥ
rajani-carāḥ patagāḥ surāsurāḥ ca
raṇagatam abhiyānti sindhurājam na
sa bhavitā saha taiḥ api prabhāte
26. yadi ca manuja-pannagāḥ piśācāḥ
rajani-carāḥ patagāḥ surāsurāḥ ca
raṇagatam sindhurājam abhiyānti
sa taiḥ api prabhāte na bhavitā
26. Even if men, serpents, fiends, night-roaming demons, birds, gods, and anti-gods (asuras) were to approach the Sindhu king (Jayadratha) who is engaged in battle, he will not remain with them, not even by morning.
