युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
त्वयि याते महाबाहो संशप्तकबलं प्रति ।
प्रयत्नमकरोत्तीव्रमाचार्यो ग्रहणे मम ॥१॥

1. Yudhishthira said: "O mighty-armed one, when you had gone against the Sanshaptaka army, the preceptor (Drona) made an intense effort to capture me."
व्यूढानीकं वयं द्रोणं वरयामः स्म सर्वशः ।
प्रतिव्यूह्य रथानीकं यतमानं तथा रणे ॥२॥
2. vyūḍhānīkaṁ vayaṁ droṇaṁ varayāmaḥ sma sarvaśaḥ ,
prativyūhya rathānīkaṁ yatamānaṁ tathā raṇe.

prativyūhya rathānīkam yatamānam tathā raṇe

2. We, having arrayed our army, completely tried to restrain Drona, as he was also arraying his chariot divisions and striving in battle.
स वार्यमाणो रथिभी रक्षितेन मया तथा ।
अस्मानपि जघानाशु पीडयन्निशितैः शरैः ॥३॥
3. sa vāryamāṇo rathibhī rakṣitena mayā tathā ,
asmānapi jaghānāśu pīḍayanniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
3. saḥ vāryamāṇaḥ rathibhīḥ rakṣitena mayā tathā
asmān api jaghāna āśu pīḍayan niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
3. saḥ rathibhīḥ tathā rakṣitena mayā vāryamāṇaḥ
api āśu niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ pīḍayan asmān jaghāna
3. Though he (Drona) was being warded off by the charioteers and by me, who was (then) protected, he still quickly struck and afflicted us with his sharp arrows.
ते पीड्यमाना द्रोणेन द्रोणानीकं न शक्नुमः ।
प्रतिवीक्षितुमप्याजौ भेत्तुं तत्कुत एव तु ॥४॥
4. te pīḍyamānā droṇena droṇānīkaṁ na śaknumaḥ ,
prativīkṣitumapyājau bhettuṁ tatkuta eva tu.
4. te pīḍyamānāḥ droṇena droṇānīkam na śaknumaḥ
prativīkṣitum api ājau bhettum tat kutaḥ eva tu
4. droṇena pīḍyamānāḥ te (vayam) droṇānīkam ājau
prativīkṣitum api na śaknumaḥ; tat bhettum kutaḥ eva tu
4. Afflicted by Drona, we were unable even to face Drona's army in battle; how then could we possibly break through it?
वयं त्वप्रतिमं वीर्ये सर्वे सौभद्रमात्मजम् ।
उक्तवन्तः स्म ते तात भिन्ध्यनीकमिति प्रभो ॥५॥
5. vayaṁ tvapratimaṁ vīrye sarve saubhadramātmajam ,
uktavantaḥ sma te tāta bhindhyanīkamiti prabho.
5. vayam tu apratimam vīrye sarve saubhadram ātmajam
uktavantaḥ sma te tāta bhindhi anīkam iti prabho
5. tāta prabho,
vayam sarve vīrye apratimam ātmajam saubhadram te iti uktavantaḥ sma 'anīkam bhindhi'
5. O dear father (tāta), O lord (prabho), all of us indeed said to him, the son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu), our son unequalled in valor, "Break through the army!"
स तथा चोदितोऽस्माभिः सदश्व इव वीर्यवान् ।
असह्यमपि तं भारं वोढुमेवोपचक्रमे ॥६॥
6. sa tathā codito'smābhiḥ sadaśva iva vīryavān ,
asahyamapi taṁ bhāraṁ voḍhumevopacakrame.
6. saḥ tathā coditaḥ asmābhiḥ sadaśvaḥ iva vīryavān
asahyam api tam bhāram voḍhum eva upacakrame
6. asmābhiḥ tathā coditaḥ vīryavān saḥ sadaśvaḥ
iva asahyam api tam bhāram voḍhum eva upacakrame
6. Thus impelled by us, he (Abhimanyu), valorous like a noble steed, indeed began to bear even that unbearable burden.
स तवास्त्रोपदेशेन वीर्येण च समन्वितः ।
प्राविशत्तद्बलं बालः सुपर्ण इव सागरम् ॥७॥
7. sa tavāstropadeśena vīryeṇa ca samanvitaḥ ,
prāviśattadbalaṁ bālaḥ suparṇa iva sāgaram.
7. saḥ tava astropadeśena vīryeṇa ca samanvitaḥ
prāviśat tat balam bālaḥ suparṇaḥ iva sāgaram
7. saḥ bālaḥ tava astropadeśena ca vīryeṇa samanvitaḥ
suparṇaḥ iva sāgaram tat balam prāviśat
7. Endowed with your instruction in weaponry and with valor, that boy (Abhimanyu) entered that army, just as a large bird (Suparṇa) enters the ocean.
तेऽनुयाता वयं वीरं सात्वतीपुत्रमाहवे ।
प्रवेष्टुकामास्तेनैव येन स प्राविशच्चमूम् ॥८॥
8. te'nuyātā vayaṁ vīraṁ sātvatīputramāhave ,
praveṣṭukāmāstenaiva yena sa prāviśaccamūm.
8. te अनुयाताः vayam vīram sātvatīputram āhave
praveṣṭukāmāḥ tena eva yena saḥ prāviśat camūm
8. āhave vayam te anuyātāḥ vīram sātvatīputram,
yena saḥ camūm prāviśat,
tena eva praveṣṭukāmāḥ
8. In that battle, we followed that hero, the son of Satvatī (Abhimanyu), desirous of entering by the very way through which he had entered the army.
ततः सैन्धवको राजा क्षुद्रस्तात जयद्रथः ।
वरदानेन रुद्रस्य सर्वान्नः समवारयत् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ saindhavako rājā kṣudrastāta jayadrathaḥ ,
varadānena rudrasya sarvānnaḥ samavārayat.
9. tataḥ saindhavakaḥ rājā kṣudraḥ tāta jayadrathaḥ
varadānena rudrasya sarvān naḥ samavārayat
9. tataḥ tāta kṣudraḥ rājā saindhavakaḥ jayadrathaḥ
rudrasya varadānena naḥ sarvān samavārayat
9. Then, dear father, that wretched King Saindhava, Jayadratha, by the boon (varadāna) of Rudra, held all of us back.
ततो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णो द्रौणिश्च स बृहद्बलः ।
कृतवर्मा च सौभद्रं षड्रथाः पर्यवारयन् ॥१०॥
10. tato droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇo drauṇiśca sa bṛhadbalaḥ ,
kṛtavarmā ca saubhadraṁ ṣaḍrathāḥ paryavārayan.
10. tataḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇaḥ drauṇiḥ ca saḥ bṛhadbalaḥ
kṛtavarmā ca saubhadram ṣaḍrathāḥ paryavārayan
10. tataḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇaḥ drauṇiḥ ca saḥ bṛhadbalaḥ
ca kṛtavarmā ṣaḍrathāḥ saubhadram paryavārayan
10. Then, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā), that mighty Brihadbala, and Kritavarma - these six great warriors surrounded the son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu).
परिवार्य तु तैः सर्वैर्युधि बालो महारथैः ।
यतमानः परं शक्त्या बहुभिर्विरथीकृतः ॥११॥
11. parivārya tu taiḥ sarvairyudhi bālo mahārathaiḥ ,
yatamānaḥ paraṁ śaktyā bahubhirvirathīkṛtaḥ.
11. parivārya tu taiḥ sarvaiḥ yudhi bālaḥ mahārathaiḥ
yatamānaḥ param śaktyā bahubhiḥ virathīkṛtaḥ
11. tu bālaḥ taiḥ sarvaiḥ mahārathaiḥ yudhi parivārya
param śaktyā yatamānaḥ bahubhiḥ virathīkṛtaḥ
11. But, that young boy, surrounded in battle by all those great warriors, though striving with all his might (śakti), was dismounted from his chariot by many (of them).
ततो दौःशासनिः क्षिप्रं तथा तैर्विरथीकृतम् ।
संशयं परमं प्राप्य दिष्टान्तेनाभ्ययोजयत् ॥१२॥
12. tato dauḥśāsaniḥ kṣipraṁ tathā tairvirathīkṛtam ,
saṁśayaṁ paramaṁ prāpya diṣṭāntenābhyayojayat.
12. tataḥ dauḥśāsaniḥ kṣipram tathā taiḥ virathīkṛtam
saṃśayam paramam prāpya diṣṭāntena abhyayojayat
12. tataḥ dauḥśāsaniḥ kṣipram tathā taiḥ virathīkṛtam
paramam saṃśayam prāpya diṣṭāntena abhyayojayat
12. Then, Duḥśāsana's son (Dauḥśāsani), swiftly, having seen him (Abhimanyu) thus rendered chariotless by them and having reached the utmost danger, struck him down by destiny (diṣṭānta).
स तु हत्वा सहस्राणि द्विपाश्वरथसादिनाम् ।
राजपुत्रशतं चाग्र्यं वीरांश्चालक्षितान्बहून् ॥१३॥
13. sa tu hatvā sahasrāṇi dvipāśvarathasādinām ,
rājaputraśataṁ cāgryaṁ vīrāṁścālakṣitānbahūn.
13. saḥ tu hatvā sahasrāṇi dvipāśvarathasādinām
rājaputraśatam ca agryam vīrān ca alakṣitān bahūn
13. saḥ tu dvipāśvarathasādinām sahasrāṇi ca agryam
rājaputraśatam ca bahūn alakṣitān vīrān hatvā
13. He, having indeed killed thousands of elephants, horses, chariot-warriors, and foot-soldiers, as well as a hundred prominent princes and many unnoted heroes,
बृहद्बलं च राजानं स्वर्गेणाजौ प्रयोज्य ह ।
ततः परमधर्मात्मा दिष्टान्तमुपजग्मिवान् ॥१४॥
14. bṛhadbalaṁ ca rājānaṁ svargeṇājau prayojya ha ,
tataḥ paramadharmātmā diṣṭāntamupajagmivān.
14. bṛhadbalam ca rājānam svargeṇa ājau prayojya
ha tataḥ paramadharmātmā diṣṭāntam upajagmivān
14. ca ājau rājānam bṛhadbalam svargeṇa prayojya
ha tataḥ paramadharmātmā diṣṭāntam upajagmivān
14. ...and having indeed sent King Bṛhadbala to heaven in battle, that exceedingly righteous (dharma) soul then reached his appointed end (death).
एतावदेव निर्वृत्तमस्माकं शोकवर्धनम् ।
स चैवं पुरुषव्याघ्रः स्वर्गलोकमवाप्तवान् ॥१५॥
15. etāvadeva nirvṛttamasmākaṁ śokavardhanam ,
sa caivaṁ puruṣavyāghraḥ svargalokamavāptavān.
15. etāvat eva nirvṛttam asmākam śokavardhanam saḥ
ca evam puruṣavyāghraḥ svargalokam avāptavān
15. etāvat eva asmākam śokavardhanam nirvṛttam ca
saḥ evam puruṣavyāghraḥ svargalokam avāptavān
15. This much sorrow-increasing event has indeed occurred for us. And that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) thus attained the heavenly realm.
संजय उवाच ।
ततोऽर्जुनो वचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजेन भाषितम् ।
हा पुत्र इति निःश्वस्य व्यथितो न्यपतद्भुवि ॥१६॥
16. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato'rjuno vacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājena bhāṣitam ,
hā putra iti niḥśvasya vyathito nyapatadbhuvi.
16. saṃjayaḥ uvāca tataḥ arjunaḥ vacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājena
bhāṣitam hā putra iti niḥśvasya vyathitaḥ nyapatat bhuvi
16. saṃjayaḥ uvāca tataḥ arjunaḥ dharmarājena bhāṣitam vacaḥ
śrutvā "hā putra!" iti niḥśvasya vyathitaḥ bhuvi nyapatat
16. Saṃjaya said: Then, Arjuna, having heard the words spoken by the king of (dharma) (Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira), sighed, "Oh son!" and, distressed, fell to the ground.
विषण्णवदनाः सर्वे परिगृह्य धनंजयम् ।
नेत्रैरनिमिषैर्दीनाः प्रत्यवेक्षन्परस्परम् ॥१७॥
17. viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ sarve parigṛhya dhanaṁjayam ,
netrairanimiṣairdīnāḥ pratyavekṣanparasparam.
17. viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ sarve parigṛhya dhanañjayam
netraiḥ animiṣaiḥ dīnāḥ pratyavekṣan parasparam
17. sarve viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ dhanañjayam parigṛhya
dīnāḥ animiṣaiḥ netraiḥ parasparam pratyavekṣan
17. All of them, with sad faces, surrounded Arjuna (Dhanañjaya). Distressed and with unblinking eyes, they looked at each other.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां वासविः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
कम्पमानो ज्वरेणेव निःश्वसंश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१८॥
18. pratilabhya tataḥ saṁjñāṁ vāsaviḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
kampamāno jvareṇeva niḥśvasaṁśca muhurmuhuḥ.
18. pratilabhy tataḥ saṃjñām vāsaviḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ
kampamānaḥ jvareṇa iva niḥśvasan ca muhuḥ muhuḥ
18. tataḥ saṃjñām pratilabhy krodhamūrcchitaḥ vāsaviḥ
jvareṇa iva kampamānaḥ ca muhuḥ muhuḥ niḥśvasan
18. Then, regaining consciousness, Arjuna (Vāsavi), overcome with anger, was trembling as if with a fever and sighing again and again.
पाणिं पाणौ विनिष्पिष्य श्वसमानोऽश्रुनेत्रवान् ।
उन्मत्त इव विप्रेक्षन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. pāṇiṁ pāṇau viniṣpiṣya śvasamāno'śrunetravān ,
unmatta iva viprekṣannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
19. pāṇim pāṇau viniṣpiṣya śvasamānaḥ aśrunetravān
unmataḥ iva viprekṣan idam vacanam abravīt
19. pāṇim pāṇau viniṣpiṣya aśrunetravān śvasamānaḥ
unmataḥ iva viprekṣan idam vacanam abravīt
19. Grinding his hand against his hand, breathing heavily, with tearful eyes, and looking around like a madman, he spoke these words.
सत्यं वः प्रतिजानामि श्वोऽस्मि हन्ता जयद्रथम् ।
न चेद्वधभयाद्भीतो धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रहास्यति ॥२०॥
20. satyaṁ vaḥ pratijānāmi śvo'smi hantā jayadratham ,
na cedvadhabhayādbhīto dhārtarāṣṭrānprahāsyati.
20. satyam vaḥ pratijānāmi śvaḥ asmi hantā jayadratham
na cet vadhabhayāt bhītaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān prahāsyati
20. vaḥ satyam pratijānāmi śvaḥ jayadratham hantā asmi
cet vadhabhayāt bhītaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān na prahāsyati
20. Truly, I promise you, tomorrow I will kill Jayadratha, unless, fearing death, he abandons the Dhārtarāṣṭras (Dhārtarāṣṭras).
न चास्माञ्शरणं गच्छेत्कृष्णं वा पुरुषोत्तमम् ।
भवन्तं वा महाराज श्वोऽस्मि हन्ता जयद्रथम् ॥२१॥
21. na cāsmāñśaraṇaṁ gacchetkṛṣṇaṁ vā puruṣottamam ,
bhavantaṁ vā mahārāja śvo'smi hantā jayadratham.
21. na ca asmān śaraṇam gacchet kṛṣṇam vā puruṣottamam
bhavantam vā mahārāja śvaḥ asmi hantā jayadratham
21. na ca (saḥ) asmān śaraṇam gacchet.
vā kṛṣṇam puruṣottamam (gacchet),
vā bhavantam mahārāja (gacchet).
(aham) śvaḥ jayadratham hantā asmi.
21. Neither should he seek refuge with us, nor with Kṛṣṇa, the supreme person (puruṣottama), nor even with you, O great king. Tomorrow, I shall indeed be the killer of Jayadratha.
धार्तराष्ट्रप्रियकरं मयि विस्मृतसौहृदम् ।
पापं बालवधे हेतुं श्वोऽस्मि हन्ता जयद्रथम् ॥२२॥
22. dhārtarāṣṭrapriyakaraṁ mayi vismṛtasauhṛdam ,
pāpaṁ bālavadhe hetuṁ śvo'smi hantā jayadratham.
22. dhārtarāṣṭrapriyakaram mayi vismṛtasauhṛdam
pāpam bālavadhe hetum śvaḥ asmi hantā jayadratham
22. śvaḥ asmi hantā jayadratham dhārtarāṣṭrapriyakaram
mayi vismṛtasauhṛdam pāpam bālavadhe hetum
22. Tomorrow I shall be the slayer of Jayadratha, who pleases the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who has forgotten his friendship with me, who is sinful, and who was the cause of a child's death.
रक्षमाणाश्च तं संख्ये ये मां योत्स्यन्ति केचन ।
अपि द्रोणकृपौ वीरौ छादयिष्यामि ताञ्शरैः ॥२३॥
23. rakṣamāṇāśca taṁ saṁkhye ye māṁ yotsyanti kecana ,
api droṇakṛpau vīrau chādayiṣyāmi tāñśaraiḥ.
23. rakṣamāṇāḥ ca tam saṃkhye ye mām yotsyanti kecana
api droṇakṛpau vīrau chādayiṣyāmi tān śaraiḥ
23. ca ye kecana rakṣamāṇāḥ tam saṃkhye mām yotsyanti,
api vīrau droṇakṛpau,
tān śaraiḥ chādayiṣyāmi.
23. And whoever protects him in battle and fights against me, even if they are the two heroes Droṇa and Kṛpa, I shall cover them with arrows.
यद्येतदेवं संग्रामे न कुर्यां पुरुषर्षभाः ।
मा स्म पुण्यकृतां लोकान्प्राप्नुयां शूरसंमतान् ॥२४॥
24. yadyetadevaṁ saṁgrāme na kuryāṁ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
mā sma puṇyakṛtāṁ lokānprāpnuyāṁ śūrasaṁmatān.
24. yadi etat evam saṃgrāme na kuryām puruṣarṣabhāḥ
mā sma puṇyakṛtām lokān prāpnuyām śūrasaṃmatān
24. puruṣarṣabhāḥ! yadi etat evam saṃgrāme na kuryām,
mā sma prāpnuyām puṇyakṛtām śūrasaṃmatān lokān.
24. O best of men (puruṣarṣabha), if I do not accomplish this in battle, then may I not attain the worlds of the virtuous, which are esteemed by heroes.
ये लोका मातृहन्तॄणां ये चापि पितृघातिनाम् ।
गुरुदारगामिनां ये च पिशुनानां च ये तथा ॥२५॥
25. ye lokā mātṛhantṝṇāṁ ye cāpi pitṛghātinām ,
gurudāragāmināṁ ye ca piśunānāṁ ca ye tathā.
25. ye lokāḥ mātṛhantṝṇām ye ca api pitṛghātinām
gurudāragāminām ye ca piśunānām ca ye tathā
25. ye lokāḥ mātṛhantṝṇām,
ye ca api pitṛghātinām,
ye ca gurudāragāminām,
ye ca piśunānām,
tathā ca ye
25. May I reach those worlds that are for matricides, and for parricides, and for those who violate the wives of preceptors (guru), and for informers, and likewise for such others.
साधूनसूयतां ये च ये चापि परिवादिनाम् ।
ये च निक्षेपहर्तॄणां ये च विश्वासघातिनाम् ॥२६॥
26. sādhūnasūyatāṁ ye ca ye cāpi parivādinām ,
ye ca nikṣepahartṝṇāṁ ye ca viśvāsaghātinām.
26. sādhūn asūyatām ye ca ye ca api parivādinām
ye ca nikṣepahartṝṇām ye ca viśvāsaghātinām
26. ye ca sādhūn asūyatām,
ye ca api parivādinām,
ye ca nikṣepahartṝṇām,
ye ca viśvāsaghātinām
26. And those [worlds] for those who envy good people, and also for slanderers, and for those who steal deposits, and for those who betray trust.
भुक्तपूर्वां स्त्रियं ये च निन्दतामघशंसिनाम् ।
ब्रह्मघ्नानां च ये लोका ये च गोघातिनामपि ॥२७॥
27. bhuktapūrvāṁ striyaṁ ye ca nindatāmaghaśaṁsinām ,
brahmaghnānāṁ ca ye lokā ye ca goghātināmapi.
27. bhuktapūrvām striyam ye ca nindatām aghasaṃśinām
brahmaghnānām ca ye lokāḥ ye ca goghātinām api
27. ye ca bhuktapūrvām striyam nindatām,
aghasaṃśinām ca ye,
ye ca brahmaghnānām lokāḥ,
ye ca goghātinām api
27. And those [worlds] for those who condemn a woman who has been previously enjoyed, and for those who proclaim evil; and those worlds destined for brahmin-killers, and also for cow-killers.
पायसं वा यवान्नं वा शाकं कृसरमेव वा ।
संयावापूपमांसानि ये च लोका वृथाश्नताम् ।
तानह्नैवाधिगच्छेयं न चेद्धन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥२८॥
28. pāyasaṁ vā yavānnaṁ vā śākaṁ kṛsarameva vā ,
saṁyāvāpūpamāṁsāni ye ca lokā vṛthāśnatām ,
tānahnaivādhigaccheyaṁ na ceddhanyāṁ jayadratham.
28. pāyasam vā yavānnam vā śākam kṛsaram
eva vā saṃyāvāpūpamāṃsāni ye ca
lokāḥ vṛthā aśnatām tān ahnā eva
adhigaccheyam na cet hanyām jayadratham
28. ye ca lokāḥ pāyasam vā yavānnam vā śākam vā kṛsaram eva saṃyāvāpūpamāṃsāni vṛthā aśnatām,
tān ahnā eva adhigaccheyam,
na cet jayadratham hanyām
28. The worlds of those who consume rice pudding, or barley meal, or vegetables, or even *kṛsara* (a dish of rice and lentils), or cakes of flour and meat, fruitlessly – those worlds I shall certainly attain this very day, if I do not slay Jayadratha.
वेदाध्यायिनमत्यर्थं संशितं वा द्विजोत्तमम् ।
अवमन्यमानो यान्याति वृद्धान्साधूंस्तथा गुरून् ॥२९॥
29. vedādhyāyinamatyarthaṁ saṁśitaṁ vā dvijottamam ,
avamanyamāno yānyāti vṛddhānsādhūṁstathā gurūn.
29. vedādhyāyinam atyartham saṃśitam vā dvijottamam
avamanyamānaḥ yāni ati vṛddhān sādhūn tathā gurūn
29. yaḥ vedādhyāyinam atyartham vā saṃśitam dvijottamam vṛddhān
sādhūn tathā gurūn avamanyamānaḥ yāni ati (tāni gatīni)
29. The various states one attains by disrespecting a Brahmin (dvija) who is exceedingly learned in the Vedas or highly disciplined, and also by disrespecting elders, virtuous persons, and spiritual teachers (guru).
स्पृशतां ब्राह्मणं गां च पादेनाग्निं च यां लभेत् ।
याप्सु श्लेष्म पुरीषं वा मूत्रं वा मुञ्चतां गतिः ।
तां गच्छेयं गतिं घोरां न चेद्धन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥३०॥
30. spṛśatāṁ brāhmaṇaṁ gāṁ ca pādenāgniṁ ca yāṁ labhet ,
yāpsu śleṣma purīṣaṁ vā mūtraṁ vā muñcatāṁ gatiḥ ,
tāṁ gaccheyaṁ gatiṁ ghorāṁ na ceddhanyāṁ jayadratham.
30. spṛśatām brāhmaṇam gām ca pādena agnim
ca yām labhet yā apsu śleṣmam purīṣam vā
mūtram vā muñcatām gatiḥ tām gaccheyam
gatim ghorām na cet hanyām jayadratham
30. yām gatim brāhmaṇam gām ca pādena agnim ca spṛśatām labhet,
yā ca gatiḥ apsu śleṣmam vā purīṣam vā mūtram vā muñcatām (asti),
tām ghorām gatim gaccheyam,
na cet jayadratham hanyām
30. May I attain that dreadful fate (gati) which one incurs by touching a Brahmin (dvija), a cow, or fire with one's foot; and that fate which awaits those who discharge phlegm, feces, or urine into water, if I do not kill Jayadratha.
नग्नस्य स्नायमानस्य या च वन्ध्यातिथेर्गतिः ।
उत्कोचिनां मृषोक्तीनां वञ्चकानां च या गतिः ।
आत्मापहारिणां या च या च मिथ्याभिशंसिनाम् ॥३१॥
31. nagnasya snāyamānasya yā ca vandhyātithergatiḥ ,
utkocināṁ mṛṣoktīnāṁ vañcakānāṁ ca yā gatiḥ ,
ātmāpahāriṇāṁ yā ca yā ca mithyābhiśaṁsinām.
31. nagnasya snāyamānasya yā ca
vandhyātitheḥ gatiḥ utkocinām mṛṣoktīnām
vañcakānām ca yā gatiḥ ātmapahāriṇām
yā ca yā ca mithyābhiśaṃsinām
31. yā ca gatiḥ nagnasya snāyamānasya vandhyātitheḥ,
yā ca gatiḥ utkocinām mṛṣoktīnām vañcakānām ca,
yā ca ātmapahāriṇām yā ca mithyābhiśaṃsinām (asti)
31. And the fate (gati) of one who bathes naked, as well as the fate of a guest of a barren woman; and the fate of those who accept bribes, speak falsehoods, and deceive; and also the fate of those who betray their own self (ātman) or interests, and those who make false accusations.
भृत्यैः संदृश्यमानानां पुत्रदाराश्रितैस्तथा ।
असंविभज्य क्षुद्राणां या गतिर्मृष्टमश्नताम् ।
तां गच्छेयं गतिं घोरां न चेद्धन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥३२॥
32. bhṛtyaiḥ saṁdṛśyamānānāṁ putradārāśritaistathā ,
asaṁvibhajya kṣudrāṇāṁ yā gatirmṛṣṭamaśnatām ,
tāṁ gaccheyaṁ gatiṁ ghorāṁ na ceddhanyāṁ jayadratham.
32. bhṛtyaiḥ saṃdṛśyamānānām putradārāśritaiḥ
tathā asaṃvibhajya kṣudrāṇām yā
gatiḥ mṛṣṭam aśnatām tām gaccheyam
gatim ghorām na cet hanyām jayadratham
32. yā gatiḥ (asti) bhṛtyaiḥ putradārāśritaiḥ tathā saṃdṛśyamānānām kṣudrāṇām asaṃvibhajya mṛṣṭam aśnatām,
tām ghorām gatim gaccheyam,
na cet jayadratham hanyām
32. The fate (gati) of those who eat delicious food without sharing it with the needy, while being observed by their servants and by dependents like their children and wives; I would attain that dreadful fate if I do not kill Jayadratha.
संश्रितं वापि यस्त्यक्त्वा साधुं तद्वचने रतम् ।
न बिभर्ति नृशंसात्मा निन्दते चोपकारिणम् ॥३३॥
33. saṁśritaṁ vāpi yastyaktvā sādhuṁ tadvacane ratam ,
na bibharti nṛśaṁsātmā nindate copakāriṇam.
33. saṃśritam vā api yaḥ tyaktvā sādhum tat vacane
ratam na bibharti nṛśaṃsātmā nindate ca upakāriṇam
33. yaḥ nṛśaṃsātmā saṃśritam vā api sādhum tat vacane
ratam tyaktvā na bibharti ca upakāriṇam nindate
33. A cruel-hearted person who abandons a virtuous individual who has sought his protection and is devoted to his words, fails to support him, and also blames a benefactor.
अर्हते प्रातिवेश्याय श्राद्धं यो न ददाति च ।
अनर्हते च यो दद्याद्वृषलीपत्युरेव च ॥३४॥
34. arhate prātiveśyāya śrāddhaṁ yo na dadāti ca ,
anarhate ca yo dadyādvṛṣalīpatyureva ca.
34. arhate prātiveśyāya śrāddham yaḥ na dadāti ca
anarhate ca yaḥ dadyāt vṛṣalī patyuḥ eva ca
34. yaḥ arhate prātiveśyāya śrāddham na dadāti ca
yaḥ anarhate ca vṛṣalī patyuḥ eva ca dadyāt
34. Whoever does not offer the śrāddha ritual to a worthy neighbor, and whoever gives it to an unworthy person, or even to the husband of a śūdra woman.
मद्यपो भिन्नमर्यादः कृतघ्नो भ्रातृनिन्दकः ।
तेषां गतिमियां क्षिप्रं न चेद्धन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥३५॥
35. madyapo bhinnamaryādaḥ kṛtaghno bhrātṛnindakaḥ ,
teṣāṁ gatimiyāṁ kṣipraṁ na ceddhanyāṁ jayadratham.
35. madyapaḥ bhinna maryādaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ bhrātṛ nindakaḥ
teṣām gatim iyām kṣipram na cet hanyām jayadratham
35. na cet jayadratham hanyām kṣipram madyapaḥ bhinna
maryādaḥ kṛtaghnaḥ bhrātṛ nindakaḥ teṣām gatim iyām
35. May I swiftly attain the destiny of drunkards, those who transgress moral limits, the ungrateful, and those who blame their brothers, if I do not slay Jayadratha.
धर्मादपेता ये चान्ये मया नात्रानुकीर्तिताः ।
ये चानुकीर्तिताः क्षिप्रं तेषां गतिमवाप्नुयाम् ।
यदि व्युष्टामिमां रात्रिं श्वो न हन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥३६॥
36. dharmādapetā ye cānye mayā nātrānukīrtitāḥ ,
ye cānukīrtitāḥ kṣipraṁ teṣāṁ gatimavāpnuyām ,
yadi vyuṣṭāmimāṁ rātriṁ śvo na hanyāṁ jayadratham.
36. dharmāt apetaḥ ye ca anye mayā na atra
anukīrtitāḥ ye ca anukīrtitāḥ kṣipram
teṣām gatim avāpnuyām yadi vyuṣṭām
imām rātrim śvaḥ na hanyām jayadratham
36. yadi imām rātrim vyuṣṭām śvaḥ jayadratham na hanyām,
(tadā) ye ca anye dharmāt apetaḥ mayā atra na anukīrtitāḥ ye ca (prāk) anukīrtitāḥ,
teṣām gatim kṣipram avāpnuyām
36. And may I swiftly attain the destiny of those others who have deviated from natural law (dharma) and whom I have not mentioned here, as well as those who have been mentioned, if after this night has passed, I do not slay Jayadratha tomorrow.
इमां चाप्यपरां भूयः प्रतिज्ञां मे निबोधत ।
यद्यस्मिन्नहते पापे सूर्योऽस्तमुपयास्यति ।
इहैव संप्रवेष्टाहं ज्वलितं जातवेदसम् ॥३७॥
37. imāṁ cāpyaparāṁ bhūyaḥ pratijñāṁ me nibodhata ,
yadyasminnahate pāpe sūryo'stamupayāsyati ,
ihaiva saṁpraveṣṭāhaṁ jvalitaṁ jātavedasam.
37. imām ca api aparām bhūyaḥ pratijñām
me nibodhata | yadi asmin ahate pāpe
sūryaḥ astam upayāsyati | iha eva
saṃpraveṣṭā aham jvalitam jātavedasam
37. me imām aparām ca bhūyaḥ pratijñām api nibodhata.
yadi asmin pāpe ahate sūryaḥ astam upayāsyati,
[tarhi] aham iha eva jvalitam jātavedasam saṃpraveṣṭā.
37. Also, hear this other vow of mine: if the sun sets before this sinner is killed, I myself will enter the blazing fire here.
असुरसुरमनुष्याः पक्षिणो वोरगा वा पितृरजनिचरा वा ब्रह्मदेवर्षयो वा ।
चरमचरमपीदं यत्परं चापि तस्मात्तदपि मम रिपुं तं रक्षितुं नैव शक्ताः ॥३८॥
38. asurasuramanuṣyāḥ pakṣiṇo voragā vā; pitṛrajanicarā vā brahmadevarṣayo vā ,
caramacaramapīdaṁ yatparaṁ cāpi tasmā;ttadapi mama ripuṁ taṁ rakṣituṁ naiva śaktāḥ.
38. asurasuramanuṣyāḥ pakṣiṇaḥ voragāḥ vā
pitṛrajanicarāḥ vā brahmadevarṣayaḥ vā |
caramācaramam api idam yat param ca api tasmāt
tat api mama ripum tam rakṣitum na eva śaktāḥ
38. asurasuramanuṣyāḥ,
pakṣiṇaḥ,
vā voragāḥ,
vā pitṛrajanicarāḥ,
vā brahmadevarṣayaḥ,
vā idam caramācaramam api,
ca tasmāt yat param api tat api,
mama tam ripum rakṣitum na eva śaktāḥ.
38. Neither asuras, suras, humans, birds, or great serpents, nor pitṛs or night-rovers, nor Brahmā, devas, or ṛṣis - nor even any moving or unmoving thing, or anything beyond that - none of these are capable of protecting my enemy.
यदि विशति रसातलं तदग्र्यं वियदपि देवपुरं दितेः पुरं वा ।
तदपि शरशतैरहं प्रभाते भृशमभिपत्य रिपोः शिरोऽभिहर्ता ॥३९॥
39. yadi viśati rasātalaṁ tadagryaṁ; viyadapi devapuraṁ diteḥ puraṁ vā ,
tadapi śaraśatairahaṁ prabhāte; bhṛśamabhipatya ripoḥ śiro'bhihartā.
39. yadi viśati rasātalam tat agryam
viyat api devapuram diteḥ puram vā |
tat api śaraśataiḥ aham prabhāte
bhṛśam abhipatya ripoḥ śiraḥ abhihartā
39. yadi [saḥ] rasātalam,
vā tat agryam viyat,
vā devapuram,
vā diteḥ puram api viśati; tat api aham prabhāte śaraśataiḥ bhṛśam abhipatya ripoḥ śiraḥ abhihartā.
39. Even if he enters the netherworld, or the foremost sky, or the city of the gods, or the city of Diti; even then, in the morning, I will attack fiercely with hundreds of arrows and strike off my enemy's head.
एवमुक्त्वा विचिक्षेप गाण्डीवं सव्यदक्षिणम् ।
तस्य शब्दमतिक्रम्य धनुःशब्दोऽस्पृशद्दिवम् ॥४०॥
40. evamuktvā vicikṣepa gāṇḍīvaṁ savyadakṣiṇam ,
tasya śabdamatikramya dhanuḥśabdo'spṛśaddivam.
40. evam uktvā vicikṣepa gāṇḍīvam savyadakṣiṇam |
tasya śabdam atikramya dhanuḥśabdaḥ aspṛśat divam
40. evam uktvā,
[saḥ] gāṇḍīvam savyadakṣiṇam vicikṣepa.
tasya śabdam atikramya,
dhanuḥśabdaḥ divam aspṛśat.
40. Having spoken thus, he hurled the Gāṇḍīva bow left and right. Overcoming the sound of that (bow's twang), the sound of (another) bow touched the sky.
अर्जुनेन प्रतिज्ञाते पाञ्चजन्यं जनार्दनः ।
प्रदध्मौ तत्र संक्रुद्धो देवदत्तं धनंजयः ॥४१॥
41. arjunena pratijñāte pāñcajanyaṁ janārdanaḥ ,
pradadhmau tatra saṁkruddho devadattaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ.

pradadhmau tatra saṃkruddhaḥ devadattaṃ dhanañjayaḥ

41. When Arjuna had made his solemn vow, Janārdana (Krishna) blew the Pañcajanya conch there. Then, enraged, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) blew the Devadatta conch.
स पाञ्चजन्योऽच्युतवक्त्रवायुना भृशं सुपूर्णोदरनिःसृतध्वनिः ।
जगत्सपातालवियद्दिगीश्वरं प्रकम्पयामास युगात्यये यथा ॥४२॥
42. sa pāñcajanyo'cyutavaktravāyunā; bhṛśaṁ supūrṇodaraniḥsṛtadhvaniḥ ,
jagatsapātālaviyaddigīśvaraṁ; prakampayāmāsa yugātyaye yathā.
42. saḥ pāñcajanyaḥ acyutavaktrvāyunā
bhṛśaṃ supūrṇodaranihsṛtadhvaniḥ
jagat sa-pātālaviyaddigīśvaraṃ
prakampayāmāsa yugātyaye yathā
42. saḥ pāñcajanyaḥ acyutavaktrvāyunā
bhṛśaṃ supūrṇodaranihsṛtadhvaniḥ
yugātyaye yathā sa-pātālaviyaddigīśvaraṃ
jagat prakampayāmāsa
42. That Pañcajanya conch, its sound intensely emitted from its fully-filled cavity by the breath from Acyuta's (Krishna's) mouth, caused the world - including the netherworlds, the sky, and the lords of the directions - to tremble, just as it does at the end of a cosmic age (yuga).
ततो वादित्रघोषाश्च प्रादुरासन्समन्ततः ।
सिंहनादाश्च पाण्डूनां प्रतिज्ञाते महात्मना ॥४३॥
43. tato vāditraghoṣāśca prādurāsansamantataḥ ,
siṁhanādāśca pāṇḍūnāṁ pratijñāte mahātmanā.
43. tataḥ vāditraghoṣāḥ ca prādurāsan samantataḥ
siṃhanādāḥ ca pāṇḍūnāṃ pratijñāte mahātmanā
43. tataḥ mahātmanā pratijñāte samantataḥ
vāditraghoṣāḥ ca pāṇḍūnāṃ siṃhanādāḥ ca prādurāsan
43. Then, from all sides, the sounds of musical instruments and the lion-roars of the Pāṇḍavas arose, after the great-souled one (Arjuna) had made his solemn vow.
