भीष्म उवाच ।
स वनानि विचित्राणि तीर्थानि च सरांसि च ।
अभिगच्छन्क्रमेण स्म कंचिन्मुनिमुपस्थितः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sa vanāni vicitrāṇi tīrthāni ca sarāṁsi ca ,
abhigacchankrameṇa sma kaṁcinmunimupasthitaḥ.
1. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ vanāni vicitrāṇi tīrthāni ca sarāṃsi
ca abhigacchan krameṇa sma kañcit munim upasthitaḥ
1. Bhishma said: Gradually, as he journeyed, visiting various forests, sacred bathing places (tīrthas), and lakes, he eventually came upon a certain sage.
तं स तेन यथोद्दिष्टं नागं विप्रेण ब्राह्मणः ।
पर्यपृच्छद्यथान्यायं श्रुत्वैव च जगाम सः ॥२॥
2. taṁ sa tena yathoddiṣṭaṁ nāgaṁ vipreṇa brāhmaṇaḥ ,
paryapṛcchadyathānyāyaṁ śrutvaiva ca jagāma saḥ.
2. tam saḥ tena yathā uddiṣṭam nāgam vipreṇa brāhmaṇaḥ
paryapṛcchat yathānyāyam śrutvā eva ca jagāma saḥ
2. That brahmin (the protagonist) properly questioned that Naga, as he had been instructed by the (other) brahmin (the sage), and having heard the answer, he departed immediately.
सोऽभिगम्य यथाख्यातं नागायतनमर्थवित् ।
प्रोक्तवानहमस्मीति भोःशब्दालंकृतं वचः ॥३॥
3. so'bhigamya yathākhyātaṁ nāgāyatanamarthavit ,
proktavānahamasmīti bhoḥśabdālaṁkṛtaṁ vacaḥ.
3. saḥ abhigamya yathākhyātam nāgāyatanam arthavit
proktavān aham asmi iti bhoḥśabdālaṅkṛtam vacaḥ
3. arthavit saḥ yathākhyātam nāgāyatanam abhigamya,
"aham asmi" iti bhoḥśabdālaṅkṛtam vacaḥ proktavān.
3. Knowing his purpose, he approached the serpent's abode as described. He then spoke, saying, "Here I am," his words adorned with the address "Bhoḥ" (Sir).
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रूपिणी धर्मवत्सला ।
दर्शयामास तं विप्रं नागपत्नी पतिव्रता ॥४॥
4. tatastasya vacaḥ śrutvā rūpiṇī dharmavatsalā ,
darśayāmāsa taṁ vipraṁ nāgapatnī pativratā.
4. tataḥ tasya vacaḥ śrutvā rūpiṇī dharmavatsalā
darśayāmāsa tam vipram nāgapatnī pativratā
4. tataḥ tasya vacaḥ śrutvā,
rūpiṇī,
dharmavatsalā,
pativratā nāgapatnī tam vipram darśayāmāsa.
4. Then, having heard his words, the beautiful serpent's wife, who was devoted to natural law (dharma) and loyal to her husband, revealed herself to that brahmin.
सा तस्मै विधिवत्पूजां चक्रे धर्मपरायणा ।
स्वागतेनागतं कृत्वा किं करोमीति चाब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. sā tasmai vidhivatpūjāṁ cakre dharmaparāyaṇā ,
svāgatenāgataṁ kṛtvā kiṁ karomīti cābravīt.
5. sā tasmai vidhivat pūjām cakre dharmaparāyaṇā
svāgatena āgatam kṛtvā kim karomi iti ca abravīt
5. dharmaparāyaṇā sā tasmai vidhivat pūjām cakre.
svāgatena āgatam kṛtvā ca "kim karomi?" iti abravīt.
5. She, devoted to natural law (dharma), duly offered him worship. Welcoming him, she then asked, "What may I do for you?"
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
विश्रान्तोऽभ्यर्चितश्चास्मि भवत्या श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भवति तं देवं नागमुत्तमम् ॥६॥
6. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
viśrānto'bhyarcitaścāsmi bhavatyā ślakṣṇayā girā ,
draṣṭumicchāmi bhavati taṁ devaṁ nāgamuttamam.
6. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca viśrāntaḥ abhyarcitaḥ ca asmi bhavatyā
ślakṣṇayā girā draṣṭum icchāmi bhavati tam devam nāgam uttamam
6. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca: "bhavatyā ślakṣṇayā girā ca viśrāntaḥ abhyarcitaḥ asmi.
bhavati,
tam uttamam devam nāgam draṣṭum icchāmi.
"
6. The brahmin said: "I am rested and honored by your gentle words, O lady. I wish to see that excellent, divine serpent."
एतद्धि परमं कार्यमेतन्मे फलमीप्सितम् ।
अनेनार्थेन चास्म्यद्य संप्राप्तः पन्नगालयम् ॥७॥
7. etaddhi paramaṁ kāryametanme phalamīpsitam ,
anenārthena cāsmyadya saṁprāptaḥ pannagālayam.
7. etat hi paramam kāryam etat me phalam īpsitam
anena arthena ca asmi adya samprāptaḥ pannagālayam
7. hi etat paramam kāryam ca etat me īpsitam phalam
anena arthena adya pannagālayam samprāptaḥ asmi
7. Indeed, this is the supreme task, and this is the result I desire. For this very purpose, I have now arrived at the abode of the serpents (nāgas).
नागभार्योवाच ।
आर्य सूर्यरथं वोढुं गतोऽसौ मासचारिकः ।
सप्ताष्टभिर्दिनैर्विप्र दर्शयिष्यत्यसंशयम् ॥८॥
8. nāgabhāryovāca ,
ārya sūryarathaṁ voḍhuṁ gato'sau māsacārikaḥ ,
saptāṣṭabhirdinairvipra darśayiṣyatyasaṁśayam.
8. nāgabhāryā uvāca ārya sūryaratham voḍhum gataḥ asau
māsacārikaḥ saptāṣṭabhiḥ dinaiḥ vipra darśayiṣyati asaṃśayam
8. nāgabhāryā uvāca ārya asau māsacārikaḥ sūryaratham voḍhum
gataḥ vipra saptāṣṭabhiḥ dinaiḥ asaṃśayam darśayiṣyati
8. The nāga's wife said: 'O noble sir, he (my husband) has gone to carry the sun's chariot, as he has a monthly duty. He will undoubtedly appear within seven or eight days, O Brahmin.'
एतद्विदितमार्यस्य विवासकरणं मम ।
भर्तुर्भवतु किं चान्यत्क्रियतां तद्वदस्व मे ॥९॥
9. etadviditamāryasya vivāsakaraṇaṁ mama ,
bharturbhavatu kiṁ cānyatkriyatāṁ tadvadasva me.
9. etat viditam āryasya vivāsakaraṇam mama bhartuḥ
bhavatu kim ca anyat kriyatām tat vadasva me
9. mama vivāsakaraṇam etat āryasya viditam bhartuḥ
bhavatu ca kim anyat kriyatām tat me vadasva
9. This act of sending me away is known to my noble husband. Let it be as his will. And what else should be done? Please tell me that.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अनेन निश्चयेनाहं साध्वि संप्राप्तवानिह ।
प्रतीक्षन्नागमं देवि वत्स्याम्यस्मिन्महावने ॥१०॥
10. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
anena niścayenāhaṁ sādhvi saṁprāptavāniha ,
pratīkṣannāgamaṁ devi vatsyāmyasminmahāvane.
10. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca anena niścayena aham sādhvi samprāptavān
iha pratīkṣan āgamam devi vatsyāmi asmin mahāvane
10. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca sādhvi anena niścayena aham iha
samprāptavān devi āgamam pratīkṣan asmin mahāvane vatsyāmi
10. The Brahmin said: 'O virtuous lady, with this resolve, I have arrived here. O lady, I will reside in this great forest, awaiting his arrival.'
संप्राप्तस्यैव चाव्यग्रमावेद्योऽहमिहागतः ।
ममाभिगमनं प्राप्तो वाच्यश्च वचनं त्वया ॥११॥
11. saṁprāptasyaiva cāvyagramāvedyo'hamihāgataḥ ,
mamābhigamanaṁ prāpto vācyaśca vacanaṁ tvayā.
11. samprāptasya eva ca avyagram āvedyaḥ aham iha āgataḥ
mama abhigamanam prāptaḥ ca vacanam tvayā vācyaḥ
11. I have arrived here, and I must be announced attentively just upon my arrival. My arrival having occurred, a message must also be conveyed by you.
अहमप्यत्र वत्स्यामि गोमत्याः पुलिने शुभे ।
कालं परिमिताहारो यथोक्तं परिपालयन् ॥१२॥
12. ahamapyatra vatsyāmi gomatyāḥ puline śubhe ,
kālaṁ parimitāhāro yathoktaṁ paripālayan.
12. aham api atra vatsyāmi gomatīyāḥ puline śubhe
kālam parimitāhāraḥ yathoktam paripālayan
12. I shall also dwell here on the beautiful sandy bank of the Gomati river for a certain period, taking limited food, and observing the prescribed rules.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः स विप्रस्तां नागीं समाधाय पुनः पुनः ।
तदेव पुलिनं नद्याः प्रययौ ब्राह्मणर्षभः ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ sa viprastāṁ nāgīṁ samādhāya punaḥ punaḥ ,
tadeva pulinaṁ nadyāḥ prayayau brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ.
13. bhīṣma uvāca tataḥ sa vipraḥ tām nāgīm samādhāya punaḥ
punaḥ tat eva pulinam nadyāḥ prayayau brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ
13. Bhishma said: Then that Brahmin, the foremost among Brahmins, having repeatedly consoled that Nāgī (female serpent), returned to that very sandy bank of the river.
