भीष्म उवाच ।
तमहं स्मयन्निव रणे प्रत्यभाषं व्यवस्थितम् ।
भूमिष्ठं नोत्सहे योद्धुं भवन्तं रथमास्थितः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tamahaṁ smayanniva raṇe pratyabhāṣaṁ vyavasthitam ,
bhūmiṣṭhaṁ notsahe yoddhuṁ bhavantaṁ rathamāsthitaḥ.

1. Bhishma said: "Smiling as it were, I replied to him who stood resolute on the battlefield: 'I, stationed on a chariot, am unable to fight you, who are standing on the ground.'"
आरोह स्यन्दनं वीर कवचं च महाभुज ।
बधान समरे राम यदि योद्धुं मयेच्छसि ॥२॥
2. āroha syandanaṁ vīra kavacaṁ ca mahābhuja ,
badhāna samare rāma yadi yoddhuṁ mayecchasi.

2. O hero, O mighty-armed one, ascend your chariot and don your armor, Rāma, if you wish to fight with me in battle.
ततो मामब्रवीद्रामः स्मयमानो रणाजिरे ।
रथो मे मेदिनी भीष्म वाहा वेदाः सदश्ववत् ॥३॥
3. tato māmabravīdrāmaḥ smayamāno raṇājire ,
ratho me medinī bhīṣma vāhā vedāḥ sadaśvavat.

rathaḥ me medinī bhīṣma vāhāḥ vedāḥ sadaśvavat

3. Then Rāma, smiling on the battlefield, said to me: 'My chariot is the earth, O Bhīṣma, and the Vedas are my steeds, like excellent horses.'
सूतो मे मातरिश्वा वै कवचं वेदमातरः ।
सुसंवीतो रणे ताभिर्योत्स्येऽहं कुरुनन्दन ॥४॥
4. sūto me mātariśvā vai kavacaṁ vedamātaraḥ ,
susaṁvīto raṇe tābhiryotsye'haṁ kurunandana.

4. My charioteer is indeed Mātariśvā (the wind god), and my armor consists of the mothers of the Vedas. Well-equipped by them, I shall fight in battle, O delight of the Kurus.
एवं ब्रुवाणो गान्धारे रामो मां सत्यविक्रमः ।
शरव्रातेन महता सर्वतः पर्यवारयत् ॥५॥
5. evaṁ bruvāṇo gāndhāre rāmo māṁ satyavikramaḥ ,
śaravrātena mahatā sarvataḥ paryavārayat.

5. Thus speaking, Rāma, who possessed true valor, surrounded me from all sides with a great volley of arrows, O son of Gāndhārī.
ततोऽपश्यं जामदग्न्यं रथे दिव्ये व्यवस्थितम् ।
सर्वायुधधरे श्रीमत्यद्भुतोपमदर्शने ॥६॥
6. tato'paśyaṁ jāmadagnyaṁ rathe divye vyavasthitam ,
sarvāyudhadhare śrīmatyadbhutopamadarśane.
6. tataḥ apaśyam jāmadagnyam rathe divye vyavasthitam
sarvāyudhadhare śrīmati adbhutopamadarśane
6. tataḥ [aham] divye sarvāyudhadhare śrīmati

6. Then I saw Jāmadagnya (Parashurama) stationed in a divine chariot, which was glorious, bore all weapons, and possessed a wondrous, incomparable appearance.
मनसा विहिते पुण्ये विस्तीर्णे नगरोपमे ।
दिव्याश्वयुजि संनद्धे काञ्चनेन विभूषिते ॥७॥
7. manasā vihite puṇye vistīrṇe nagaropame ,
divyāśvayuji saṁnaddhe kāñcanena vibhūṣite.

7. It was conceived by the mind, sacred, vast and resembling a city, yoked with divine horses, well-equipped, and adorned with gold.
ध्वजेन च महाबाहो सोमालंकृतलक्ष्मणा ।
धनुर्धरो बद्धतूणो बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् ॥८॥
8. dhvajena ca mahābāho somālaṁkṛtalakṣmaṇā ,
dhanurdharo baddhatūṇo baddhagodhāṅgulitravān.

8. O mighty-armed one, (he was present) with a banner whose emblem was adorned with Soma (plant). He was a bow-wielder, with a fastened quiver, and wearing a fastened leather thumb-protector.
सारथ्यं कृतवांस्तत्र युयुत्सोरकृतव्रणः ।
सखा वेदविदत्यन्तं दयितो भार्गवस्य ह ॥९॥
9. sārathyaṁ kṛtavāṁstatra yuyutsorakṛtavraṇaḥ ,
sakhā vedavidatyantaṁ dayito bhārgavasya ha.
9. sārathyam kṛtavān tatra yuyutsoḥ akṛtavraṇaḥ
sakhā vedavit atyantam dayitaḥ bhārgavasya ha
9. tatra akṛtavraṇaḥ sakhā vedavit atyantam
bhārgavasya dayitaḥ ha yuyutsoḥ sārathyam kṛtavān
9. There, Akṛtavraṇa, who was a friend, a great knower of the Vedas, and indeed exceedingly dear to Bhargava (Parashurama), performed the charioteering for the warrior.
आह्वयानः स मां युद्धे मनो हर्षयतीव मे ।
पुनः पुनरभिक्रोशन्नभियाहीति भार्गवः ॥१०॥
10. āhvayānaḥ sa māṁ yuddhe mano harṣayatīva me ,
punaḥ punarabhikrośannabhiyāhīti bhārgavaḥ.
10. āhvayānaḥ saḥ mām yuddhe manaḥ harṣayati iva me
punaḥ punaḥ abhikrośan abhiyāhi iti bhārgavaḥ
10. saḥ (rāmaḥ) yuddhe mām āhvayānaḥ me manaḥ harṣayati iva
punaḥ punaḥ abhiyāhi iti abhikrośan bhārgavaḥ (aham)
10. He (Rama), challenging me in battle, indeed gladdens my mind. I, Bhargava (Parashurama), repeatedly shout, 'Come forth!'
तमादित्यमिवोद्यन्तमनाधृष्यं महाबलम् ।
क्षत्रियान्तकरं राममेकमेकः समासदम् ॥११॥
11. tamādityamivodyantamanādhṛṣyaṁ mahābalam ,
kṣatriyāntakaraṁ rāmamekamekaḥ samāsadam.
11. tam ādityam iva udyantam anādhṛṣyam mahābalam
kṣatriyāntakaram rāmam ekam ekaḥ samāsadam
11. ekaḥ aham tam ādityam iva udyantam anādhṛṣyam
mahābalam kṣatriyāntakaram ekam rāmam samāsadam
11. I alone approached that singular Rama, who was invincible, exceedingly mighty, rising like the sun, and the annihilator of kṣatriyas (kṣatriyāntakara).
ततोऽहं बाणपातेषु त्रिषु वाहान्निगृह्य वै ।
अवतीर्य धनुर्न्यस्य पदातिरृषिसत्तमम् ॥१२॥
12. tato'haṁ bāṇapāteṣu triṣu vāhānnigṛhya vai ,
avatīrya dhanurnyasya padātirṛṣisattamam.
12. tataḥ aham bāṇapāteṣu triṣu vāhān nigṛhya vai
avatīrya dhanuḥ nyasya padātiḥ ṛṣisattamam
12. tataḥ vai aham triṣu bāṇapāteṣu vāhān nigṛhya dhanuḥ
nyasya avatīrya padātiḥ ṛṣisattamam (rāmam abhyagaccham)
12. Then, at a distance of three arrow-falls, I restrained my horses, dismounted, and laying aside my bow, approached the best of sages (ṛṣisattama) on foot.
अभ्यगच्छं तदा राममर्चिष्यन्द्विजसत्तमम् ।
अभिवाद्य चैनं विधिवदब्रुवं वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥१३॥
13. abhyagacchaṁ tadā rāmamarciṣyandvijasattamam ,
abhivādya cainaṁ vidhivadabruvaṁ vākyamuttamam.
13. abhyagaccham tadā rāmam arciṣyan dvijasattamam
abhivādya ca enam vidhivat abruvam vākyam uttamam
13. tadā aham dvijasattamam rāmam arciṣyan abhyagaccham
ca enam vidhivat abhivādya uttamam vākyam abruvam
13. Then, intending to worship that best of the twice-born (dvijasattama) Rama, I approached him, and having greeted him properly, I spoke excellent words.
योत्स्ये त्वया रणे राम विशिष्टेनाधिकेन च ।
गुरुणा धर्मशीलेन जयमाशास्स्व मे विभो ॥१४॥
14. yotsye tvayā raṇe rāma viśiṣṭenādhikena ca ,
guruṇā dharmaśīlena jayamāśāssva me vibho.
14. yotsye tvayā raṇe rāma viśiṣṭena adhikena ca
guruṇā dharmaśīlena jayam āśāssva me vibho
14. vibho rāma tvayā viśiṣṭena adhikena ca
dharmaśīlena guruṇā raṇe yotsye me jayam āśāssva
14. O Lord (vibho) Rāma, I will fight with you, who are a distinguished, superior, and righteous (dharmaśīlena) preceptor (guru). Therefore, you should wish for my victory.
राम उवाच ।
एवमेतत्कुरुश्रेष्ठ कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता ।
धर्मो ह्येष महाबाहो विशिष्टैः सह युध्यताम् ॥१५॥
15. rāma uvāca ,
evametatkuruśreṣṭha kartavyaṁ bhūtimicchatā ,
dharmo hyeṣa mahābāho viśiṣṭaiḥ saha yudhyatām.
15. rāma uvāca | evam etat kuruśreṣṭha kartavyam bhūtim
icchatā | dharmaḥ hi eṣa mahābāho viśiṣṭaiḥ saha yudhyatām
15. rāma uvāca kuruśreṣṭha mahābāho bhūtim icchatā etat
evam kartavyam hi eṣaḥ dharmaḥ viśiṣṭaiḥ saha yudhyatām
15. Rāma said: "O best of the Kurus (kuruśreṣṭha), O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), indeed, this is the proper action for one who desires prosperity. For this is the constitution (dharma) for those who engage in battle with distinguished (viśiṣṭaiḥ) individuals."
शपेयं त्वां न चेदेवमागच्छेथा विशां पते ।
युध्यस्व त्वं रणे यत्तो धैर्यमालम्ब्य कौरव ॥१६॥
16. śapeyaṁ tvāṁ na cedevamāgacchethā viśāṁ pate ,
yudhyasva tvaṁ raṇe yatto dhairyamālambya kaurava.
16. śapeyam tvām na cet evam āgacchethā viśām pate |
yudhyasva tvam raṇe yattaḥ dhairyam ālambya kaurava
16. viśām pate cet tvam evam na āgacchethā tvām śapeyam
kaurava tvam dhairyam ālambya raṇe yattaḥ yudhyasva
16. O lord of the people (viśām pate), if you do not come forward in this manner, I will curse you. O Kaurava, summon your courage (dhairyam ālambya) and fight attentively in battle.
न तु ते जयमाशासे त्वां हि जेतुमहं स्थितः ।
गच्छ युध्यस्व धर्मेण प्रीतोऽस्मि चरितेन ते ॥१७॥
17. na tu te jayamāśāse tvāṁ hi jetumahaṁ sthitaḥ ,
gaccha yudhyasva dharmeṇa prīto'smi caritena te.
17. na tu te jayam āśāse tvām hi jetum aham sthitaḥ |
gaccha yudhyasva dharmeṇa prītaḥ asmi caritena te
17. tu te jayam na āśāse hi aham tvām jetum sthitaḥ
gaccha dharmeṇa yudhyasva te caritena prītaḥ asmi
17. But I do not wish for your victory, for I am resolved to conquer you. Go, fight righteously (dharmeṇa); I am pleased with your conduct.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततोऽहं तं नमस्कृत्य रथमारुह्य सत्वरः ।
प्राध्मापयं रणे शङ्खं पुनर्हेमविभूषितम् ॥१८॥
18. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato'haṁ taṁ namaskṛtya rathamāruhya satvaraḥ ,
prādhmāpayaṁ raṇe śaṅkhaṁ punarhemavibhūṣitam.
18. bhīṣma uvāca | tataḥ aham tam namaskṛtya ratham āruhya
satvaraḥ | prādhmāpayam raṇe śaṅkham punaḥ hemavibhūṣitam

18. Bhishma said: Then, having bowed to him, I quickly mounted my chariot and blew the gold-adorned conch shell again in the battle.
ततो युद्धं समभवन्मम तस्य च भारत ।
दिवसान्सुबहून्राजन्परस्परजिगीषया ॥१९॥
19. tato yuddhaṁ samabhavanmama tasya ca bhārata ,
divasānsubahūnrājanparasparajigīṣayā.
19. tataḥ yuddham samabhavat mama tasya ca bhārata
| divasān subahūn rājan parasparajigīṣayā
19. tataḥ bhārata rājan mama tasya ca yuddham
parasparajigīṣayā subahūn divasān samabhavat
19. Then, O Bhārata, a battle ensued between him and me, lasting for many days, O King, driven by our mutual desire for conquest.
स मे तस्मिन्रणे पूर्वं प्राहरत्कङ्कपत्रिभिः ।
षष्ट्या शतैश्च नवभिः शराणामग्निवर्चसाम् ॥२०॥
20. sa me tasminraṇe pūrvaṁ prāharatkaṅkapatribhiḥ ,
ṣaṣṭyā śataiśca navabhiḥ śarāṇāmagnivarcasām.
20. saḥ me tasmin raṇe pūrvam prāharat kaṅkapatribhiḥ
| ṣaṣṭyā śataiḥ ca navabhiḥ śarāṇām agnivarcasām
20. tasmin raṇe saḥ pūrvam me navabhiḥ ṣaṣṭyā śataiḥ
ca agnivarcasām kaṅkapatribhiḥ śarāṇām prāharat
20. In that battle, he first struck me with nine hundred and sixty arrows, which were feathered with kanka (heron) feathers and shone with the brilliance of fire.
चत्वारस्तेन मे वाहाः सूतश्चैव विशां पते ।
प्रतिरुद्धास्तथैवाहं समरे दंशितः स्थितः ॥२१॥
21. catvārastena me vāhāḥ sūtaścaiva viśāṁ pate ,
pratiruddhāstathaivāhaṁ samare daṁśitaḥ sthitaḥ.
21. catvāraḥ tena me vāhāḥ sūtaḥ ca eva viśām pate |
pratiruddhāḥ tathā eva aham samare daṃśitaḥ sthitaḥ
21. viśām pate tena me catvāraḥ vāhāḥ sūtaḥ ca eva
pratiruddhāḥ; tathā eva aham samare daṃśitaḥ sthitaḥ
21. By him, four of my horses and my charioteer, O lord of men, were halted, and I, too, stood armored in that battle.
नमस्कृत्य च देवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च भारत ।
तमहं स्मयन्निव रणे प्रत्यभाषं व्यवस्थितम् ॥२२॥
22. namaskṛtya ca devebhyo brāhmaṇebhyaśca bhārata ,
tamahaṁ smayanniva raṇe pratyabhāṣaṁ vyavasthitam.
22. namaskṛtya ca devebhyaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca bhārata
tam aham smayan iva raṇe pratyabhāṣam vyavasthitam
22. bhārata,
ca devebhyaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca namaskṛtya,
aham raṇe vyavasthitam tam smayan iva pratyabhāṣam.
22. O Bhārata, after having paid homage to the gods and to the brahmins, I, as if smiling, replied to him (Rāma) who stood prepared on the battlefield.
आचार्यता मानिता मे निर्मर्यादे ह्यपि त्वयि ।
भूयस्तु शृणु मे ब्रह्मन्संपदं धर्मसंग्रहे ॥२३॥
23. ācāryatā mānitā me nirmaryāde hyapi tvayi ,
bhūyastu śṛṇu me brahmansaṁpadaṁ dharmasaṁgrahe.
23. ācāryatā mānitā me nirmaryāde hi api tvayi bhūyaḥ
tu śṛṇu me brahman sampadam dharmasaṅgrahe
23. hi api tvayi nirmaryāde,
me ācāryatā mānitā.
tu brahman,
dharmasaṅgrahe me sampadam bhūyaḥ śṛṇu.
23. Though you have indeed disregarded all bounds, your role as a teacher was honored by me. But listen further, O brahmin (brahman), to my excellence concerning the intrinsic nature (dharma).
ये ते वेदाः शरीरस्था ब्राह्मण्यं यच्च ते महत् ।
तपश्च सुमहत्तप्तं न तेभ्यः प्रहराम्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. ye te vedāḥ śarīrasthā brāhmaṇyaṁ yacca te mahat ,
tapaśca sumahattaptaṁ na tebhyaḥ praharāmyaham.
24. ye te vedāḥ śarīrasthāḥ brāhmaṇyam yat ca te mahat
tapaḥ ca sumahat taptam na tebhyaḥ praharāmi aham
24. aham,
te ye śarīrasthāḥ vedāḥ,
ca yat te mahat brāhmaṇyam,
ca sumahāt taptam tapaḥ,
tebhyaḥ na praharāmi.
24. I do not strike at your Vedas (vedāḥ) which are inherent in your being, nor at your great brahminical status, nor at the very great asceticism (tapas) you have practiced.
प्रहरे क्षत्रधर्मस्य यं त्वं राम समास्थितः ।
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियत्वं हि याति शस्त्रसमुद्यमात् ॥२५॥
25. prahare kṣatradharmasya yaṁ tvaṁ rāma samāsthitaḥ ,
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyatvaṁ hi yāti śastrasamudyamāt.
25. prahare kṣatradharmasya yam tvam rāma samāsthitaḥ
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyatvam hi yāti śastrasamudyāmāt
25. rāma,
tvam yam kṣatradharmasya samāsthitaḥ [asi],
[tām aham] prahare.
hi,
brāhmaṇaḥ śastrasamudyāmāt kṣatriyatvam yāti.
25. O Rāma, I strike at that warrior's code (kṣatradharma) which you have adopted, for indeed a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) attains the status of a kṣatriya by taking up arms.
पश्य मे धनुषो वीर्यं पश्य बाह्वोर्बलं च मे ।
एष ते कार्मुकं वीर द्विधा कुर्मि ससायकम् ॥२६॥
26. paśya me dhanuṣo vīryaṁ paśya bāhvorbalaṁ ca me ,
eṣa te kārmukaṁ vīra dvidhā kurmi sasāyakam.
26. paśya me dhanuṣaḥ vīryam paśya bāhvoḥ balam ca
me eṣaḥ te kārmukam vīra dvidhā kurmi sasāyakam
26. vīra me dhanuṣaḥ vīryam paśya ca me bāhvoḥ balam
paśya eṣaḥ te sasāyakam kārmukam dvidhā kurmi
26. Behold the prowess of my bow, and behold the strength of my arms! O hero, I will now split your bow, along with its arrows, into two parts.
तस्याहं निशितं भल्लं प्राहिण्वं भरतर्षभ ।
तेनास्य धनुषः कोटिश्छिन्ना भूमिमथागमत् ॥२७॥
27. tasyāhaṁ niśitaṁ bhallaṁ prāhiṇvaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
tenāsya dhanuṣaḥ koṭiśchinnā bhūmimathāgamat.
27. tasya aham niśitam bhallam prāhiṇvam bharatarṣabha
tena asya dhanuṣaḥ koṭiḥ chinnā bhūmim atha āgamat
27. bharatarṣabha aham tasya niśitam bhallam prāhiṇvam
tena asya dhanuṣaḥ koṭiḥ chinnā atha bhūmim āgamat
27. O best of Bharatas, I dispatched a keen arrow at him. By that, the tip of his bow was cut off and then fell to the ground.
नव चापि पृषत्कानां शतानि नतपर्वणाम् ।
प्राहिण्वं कङ्कपत्राणां जामदग्न्यरथं प्रति ॥२८॥
28. nava cāpi pṛṣatkānāṁ śatāni nataparvaṇām ,
prāhiṇvaṁ kaṅkapatrāṇāṁ jāmadagnyarathaṁ prati.
28. nava ca api pṛṣatkānām śatāni nataparvaṇām
prāhiṇvam kaṅkapatrāṇām jāmadagnyaratham prati
28. ca api nataparvaṇām kaṅkapatrāṇām nava śatāni
pṛṣatkānām jāmadagnyaratham prati prāhiṇvam
28. And I also dispatched nine hundred arrows with bent shafts and heron feathers towards the chariot of Jamadagni's son (Paraśurāma).
काये विषक्तास्तु तदा वायुनाभिसमीरिताः ।
चेलुः क्षरन्तो रुधिरं नागा इव च ते शराः ॥२९॥
29. kāye viṣaktāstu tadā vāyunābhisamīritāḥ ,
celuḥ kṣaranto rudhiraṁ nāgā iva ca te śarāḥ.
29. kāye viṣaktāḥ tu tadā vāyunā abhisamīritāḥ
celuḥ kṣarantaḥ rudhiram nāgāḥ iva ca te śarāḥ
29. tadā kāye viṣaktāḥ vāyunā abhisamīritāḥ ca
te śarāḥ rudhiram kṣarantaḥ nāgāḥ iva celuḥ
29. Indeed, those arrows, then embedded in the body and agitated by the wind, moved as if dripping blood, like serpents.
क्षतजोक्षितसर्वाङ्गः क्षरन्स रुधिरं व्रणैः ।
बभौ रामस्तदा राजन्मेरुर्धातूनिवोत्सृजन् ॥३०॥
30. kṣatajokṣitasarvāṅgaḥ kṣaransa rudhiraṁ vraṇaiḥ ,
babhau rāmastadā rājanmerurdhātūnivotsṛjan.
30. kṣatajokṣitasarvāṅgaḥ kṣaran saḥ rudhiraṃ vraṇaiḥ
babhau rāmaḥ tadā rājan meruḥ dhātūn iva utsṛjan
30. rājan kṣatajokṣitasarvāṅgaḥ vraṇaiḥ rudhiraṃ kṣaran
saḥ rāmaḥ tadā dhātūn utsṛjan meruḥ iva babhau
30. O King, Rama, his entire body bathed in blood and shedding blood from his wounds, then appeared like Mount Meru emitting its minerals.
हेमन्तान्तेऽशोक इव रक्तस्तबकमण्डितः ।
बभौ रामस्तदा राजन्क्वचित्किंशुकसंनिभः ॥३१॥
31. hemantānte'śoka iva raktastabakamaṇḍitaḥ ,
babhau rāmastadā rājankvacitkiṁśukasaṁnibhaḥ.
31. hemanta-ante aśokaḥ iva rakta-stabaka-maṇḍitaḥ
babhau rāmaḥ tadā rājan kvacit kiṃśuka-saṃnibhaḥ
31. rājan tadā rāmaḥ hemanta-ante rakta-stabaka-maṇḍitaḥ
aśokaḥ iva babhau kvacit kiṃśuka-saṃnibhaḥ
31. O King, Rama then appeared like an aśoka tree adorned with red flower clusters at the end of winter, and in some places, he resembled a palāśa (kiṃśuka) flower.
ततोऽन्यद्धनुरादाय रामः क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
हेमपुङ्खान्सुनिशिताञ्शरांस्तान्हि ववर्ष सः ॥३२॥
32. tato'nyaddhanurādāya rāmaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ ,
hemapuṅkhānsuniśitāñśarāṁstānhi vavarṣa saḥ.
32. tataḥ anyat dhanuḥ ādāya rāmaḥ krodha-samanvitaḥ
hema-puṅkhān su-niśitān śarān tān hi vavarṣa saḥ
32. tataḥ krodha-samanvitaḥ rāmaḥ anyat dhanuḥ ādāya
hi tān hema-puṅkhān su-niśitān śarān saḥ vavarṣa
32. Then, Rama, filled with rage, took another bow and indeed showered those very sharp arrows, which had golden shafts.
ते समासाद्य मां रौद्रा बहुधा मर्मभेदिनः ।
अकम्पयन्महावेगाः सर्पानलविषोपमाः ॥३३॥
33. te samāsādya māṁ raudrā bahudhā marmabhedinaḥ ,
akampayanmahāvegāḥ sarpānalaviṣopamāḥ.
33. te samāsādya mām raudrāḥ bahudhā marma-bhedinaḥ
akampayan mahā-vegāḥ sarpa-anala-viṣa-upamāḥ
33. mām samāsādya raudrāḥ bahudhā marma-bhedinaḥ
mahā-vegāḥ sarpa-anala-viṣa-upamāḥ te akampayan
33. Those fierce arrows, having struck me and repeatedly piercing my vital spots, shook me. They possessed great speed and were comparable to serpent venom and fire.
ततोऽहं समवष्टभ्य पुनरात्मानमाहवे ।
शतसंख्यैः शरैः क्रुद्धस्तदा राममवाकिरम् ॥३४॥
34. tato'haṁ samavaṣṭabhya punarātmānamāhave ,
śatasaṁkhyaiḥ śaraiḥ kruddhastadā rāmamavākiram.
34. tataḥ aham samavaṣṭabhya punaḥ ātmānam āhave
śatasaṃkhyaiḥ śaraiḥ kruddhaḥ tadā rāmam avākiram
34. tataḥ tadā aham āhave punaḥ ātmānam samavaṣṭabhya
kruddhaḥ śatasaṃkhyaiḥ śaraiḥ rāmam avākiram
34. Then, having steadied my resolve (ātman) again in battle, enraged, I then showered Rama with hundreds of arrows.
स तैरग्न्यर्कसंकाशैः शरैराशीविषोपमैः ।
शितैरभ्यर्दितो रामो मन्दचेता इवाभवत् ॥३५॥
35. sa tairagnyarkasaṁkāśaiḥ śarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ ,
śitairabhyardito rāmo mandacetā ivābhavat.
35. saḥ taiḥ agnyarkasaṃkāśaiḥ śaraiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ
śitaiḥ abhyarditaḥ rāmaḥ mandacetāḥ iva abhavat
35. taiḥ śitaiḥ agnyarkasaṃkāśaiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ śaraiḥ
abhyarditaḥ saḥ rāmaḥ mandacetāḥ iva abhavat
35. Struck by those sharp arrows, which were as brilliant as fire (agni) and the sun (arka) and comparable to venomous snakes, Rama became as if bewildered.
ततोऽहं कृपयाविष्टो विनिन्द्यात्मानमात्मना ।
धिग्धिगित्यब्रुवं युद्धं क्षत्रं च भरतर्षभ ॥३६॥
36. tato'haṁ kṛpayāviṣṭo vinindyātmānamātmanā ,
dhigdhigityabruvaṁ yuddhaṁ kṣatraṁ ca bharatarṣabha.
36. tataḥ aham kṛpayāviṣṭaḥ vinindya ātmānam ātmanā dhik
dhik iti abruvam yuddham kṣatram ca bharatarṣabha
36. bharatarṣabha tataḥ kṛpayāviṣṭaḥ aham ātmanā ātmānam
vinindya yuddham kṣatram ca dhik dhik iti abruvam
36. Then, overcome by compassion, and having condemned myself (ātman) by my own self, I exclaimed, "Fie, fie!" to this battle and to the warrior (dharma), O best of Bharatas.
असकृच्चाब्रुवं राजञ्शोकवेगपरिप्लुतः ।
अहो बत कृतं पापं मयेदं क्षत्रकर्मणा ॥३७॥
37. asakṛccābruvaṁ rājañśokavegapariplutaḥ ,
aho bata kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ mayedaṁ kṣatrakarmaṇā.
37. asakṛt ca abruvam rājan śokavegapariplutaḥ
aho bata kṛtam pāpam mayā idam kṣatrakarmaṇā
37. rājan śokavegapariplutaḥ ca asakṛt abruvam
aho bata idam pāpam mayā kṣatrakarmaṇā kṛtam
37. And, overwhelmed by a surge of sorrow, I repeatedly said, "O King, alas! What a sin was committed by me through this warrior's action (karma)!"
गुरुर्द्विजातिर्धर्मात्मा यदेवं पीडितः शरैः ।
ततो न प्राहरं भूयो जामदग्न्याय भारत ॥३८॥
38. gururdvijātirdharmātmā yadevaṁ pīḍitaḥ śaraiḥ ,
tato na prāharaṁ bhūyo jāmadagnyāya bhārata.
38. guruḥ dvijātiḥ dharmātmā yat evam pīḍitaḥ śaraiḥ
tataḥ na prāharam bhūyaḥ jāmadagnyāya bhārata
38. bhārata yat guruḥ dvijātiḥ dharmātmā evam śaraiḥ
pīḍitaḥ tataḥ na prāharam bhūyaḥ jāmadagnyāya
38. O Bhārata, since my preceptor (guru), the twice-born (dvijāti) and righteous soul (dharmātman), was thus afflicted by arrows, I did not strike Jamadagni's son again.
अथावताप्य पृथिवीं पूषा दिवससंक्षये ।
जगामास्तं सहस्रांशुस्ततो युद्धमुपारमत् ॥३९॥
39. athāvatāpya pṛthivīṁ pūṣā divasasaṁkṣaye ,
jagāmāstaṁ sahasrāṁśustato yuddhamupāramat.
39. atha avatāpya pṛthivīm pūṣā divasasaṃkṣaye
jagāma astam sahasrāṃśuḥ tataḥ yuddham upāramat
39. atha sahasrāṃśuḥ pūṣā pṛthivīm avatāpya
divasasaṃkṣaye astam jagāma tataḥ yuddham upāramat
39. Then, after the thousand-rayed Pūṣan (the sun) had scorched the earth, he went to set at the close of day. Thereupon, the battle ceased.
