धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे पराक्रान्ता जिगीषवः ।
तथैवाभिसरास्तेषां त्यक्तात्मानो जये धृताः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve parākrāntā jigīṣavaḥ ,
tathaivābhisarāsteṣāṁ tyaktātmāno jaye dhṛtāḥ.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Just as all the Pāṇḍavas are mighty and eager for victory, so too their followers, having abandoned their lives (ātman), are determined in their pursuit of victory.
त्वमेव हि पराक्रान्तानाचक्षीथाः परान्मम ।
पाञ्चालान्केकयान्मत्स्यान्मागधान्वत्सभूमिपान् ॥२॥
2. tvameva hi parākrāntānācakṣīthāḥ parānmama ,
pāñcālānkekayānmatsyānmāgadhānvatsabhūmipān.
2. tvam eva hi parākrāntān ācakṣīthāḥ parān mama |
pāñcālān kekayān matsyān māgadhān vatsa bhūmipān
2. Indeed, you yourself should describe to me those mighty enemies: the Pañcālas, the Kekayas, the Matsyas, the Māgadhas, and the rulers of Vatsa.
यश्च सेन्द्रानिमाँल्लोकानिच्छन्कुर्याद्वशे बली ।
स श्रेष्ठो जगतः कृष्णः पाण्डवानां जये धृतः ॥३॥
3. yaśca sendrānimāँllokānicchankuryādvaśe balī ,
sa śreṣṭho jagataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ jaye dhṛtaḥ.
3. yaḥ ca sa indrān imān lokān icchan kuryāt vaśe balī
| sa śreṣṭhaḥ jagataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍavānām jaye dhṛtaḥ
3. And whoever, being mighty, could bring these worlds, even with Indra, under his control if he wished, that Kṛṣṇa, who is determined for the victory of the Pāṇḍavas, is the greatest in the world.
समस्तामर्जुनाद्विद्यां सात्यकिः क्षिप्रमाप्तवान् ।
शैनेयः समरे स्थाता बीजवत्प्रवपञ्शरान् ॥४॥
4. samastāmarjunādvidyāṁ sātyakiḥ kṣipramāptavān ,
śaineyaḥ samare sthātā bījavatpravapañśarān.
4. samastām arjunāt vidyām sātyakiḥ kṣipram āptavān
| śaineyaḥ samare sthātā bījavat pravapan śarān
4. Sātyaki quickly acquired all knowledge from Arjuna. That Śaineya (Sātyaki), standing firm in battle, scattered arrows like seeds.
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पाञ्चाल्यः क्रूरकर्मा महारथः ।
मामकेषु रणं कर्ता बलेषु परमास्त्रवित् ॥५॥
5. dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pāñcālyaḥ krūrakarmā mahārathaḥ ,
māmakeṣu raṇaṁ kartā baleṣu paramāstravit.
5. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pāñcālyaḥ krūrakarmā mahārathaḥ
māmakeṣu raṇaṃ kartā baleṣu paramāstravit
5. And Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the prince of Pāñcāla, who is known for fierce actions and is a great chariot warrior, an expert in ultimate weapons, will fight against my forces.
युधिष्ठिरस्य च क्रोधादर्जुनस्य च विक्रमात् ।
यमाभ्यां भीमसेनाच्च भयं मे तात जायते ॥६॥
6. yudhiṣṭhirasya ca krodhādarjunasya ca vikramāt ,
yamābhyāṁ bhīmasenācca bhayaṁ me tāta jāyate.
6. yudhiṣṭhirasya ca krodhāt arjunasya ca vikramāt
yamābhyāṃ bhīmasenāt ca bhayaṃ me tāta jāyate
6. Dear Saṃjaya, fear arises in me from Yudhiṣṭhira's anger, from Arjuna's prowess, from the twin Yamas, and from Bhīmasena.
अमानुषं मनुष्येन्द्रैर्जालं विततमन्तरा ।
मम सेनां हनिष्यन्ति ततः क्रोशामि संजय ॥७॥
7. amānuṣaṁ manuṣyendrairjālaṁ vitatamantarā ,
mama senāṁ haniṣyanti tataḥ krośāmi saṁjaya.
7. amānuṣaṃ manuṣyendraiḥ jālaṃ vitatam antarā
mama senāṃ haniṣyanti tataḥ krośāmi saṃjaya
7. These great human heroes have spread a superhuman net (of war) in the midst (of the battle). They will destroy my army; therefore, I lament, Saṃjaya.
दर्शनीयो मनस्वी च लक्ष्मीवान्ब्रह्मवर्चसी ।
मेधावी सुकृतप्रज्ञो धर्मात्मा पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥८॥
8. darśanīyo manasvī ca lakṣmīvānbrahmavarcasī ,
medhāvī sukṛtaprajño dharmātmā pāṇḍunandanaḥ.
8. darśanīyaḥ manasvī ca lakṣmīvān brahmavarcasī
medhāvī sukṛtaprajñaḥ dharmātmā pāṇḍunandanaḥ
8. And the son of Pāṇḍu (Yudhiṣṭhira) is handsome, high-minded, prosperous, endowed with spiritual effulgence, intelligent, possessed of well-formed wisdom, and embodies righteousness (dharma).
मित्रामात्यैः सुसंपन्नः संपन्नो योज्ययोजकैः ।
भ्रातृभिः श्वशुरैः पुत्रैरुपपन्नो महारथैः ॥९॥
9. mitrāmātyaiḥ susaṁpannaḥ saṁpanno yojyayojakaiḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ śvaśuraiḥ putrairupapanno mahārathaiḥ.
9. mitra āmātyaiḥ susampannaḥ sampannaḥ yojyayojakaiḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ śvaśuraiḥ putraiḥ upapannaḥ mahārathaiḥ
9. He is well-endowed with good friends and ministers, possesses skilled strategists, and is accompanied by brothers, fathers-in-law, sons, and great warriors.
धृत्या च पुरुषव्याघ्रो नैभृत्येन च पाण्डवः ।
अनृशंसो वदान्यश्च ह्रीमान्सत्यपराक्रमः ॥१०॥
10. dhṛtyā ca puruṣavyāghro naibhṛtyena ca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
anṛśaṁso vadānyaśca hrīmānsatyaparākramaḥ.
10. dhṛtyā ca puruṣavyāghraḥ naibhṛtyena ca pāṇḍavaḥ
anṛśaṃsaḥ vadānyaḥ ca hrīmān satyaparākramaḥ
10. And endowed with fortitude and discretion, that best of men (puruṣavyāghra), the Pāṇḍava, is kind, generous, modest, and truly mighty.
बहुश्रुतः कृतात्मा च वृद्धसेवी जितेन्द्रियः ।
तं सर्वगुणसंपन्नं समिद्धमिव पावकम् ॥११॥
11. bahuśrutaḥ kṛtātmā ca vṛddhasevī jitendriyaḥ ,
taṁ sarvaguṇasaṁpannaṁ samiddhamiva pāvakam.
11. bahuśrutaḥ kṛtātmā ca vṛddhasevī jitendriyaḥ
tam sarvaguṇasampannam samiddham iva pāvakam
11. He is very learned, one whose self (ātman) is disciplined, who serves elders, and who has controlled his senses. Such a person, endowed with all virtues, is like a blazing fire.
तपन्तमिव को मन्दः पतिष्यति पतंगवत् ।
पाण्डवाग्निमनावार्यं मुमूर्षुर्मूढचेतनः ॥१२॥
12. tapantamiva ko mandaḥ patiṣyati pataṁgavat ,
pāṇḍavāgnimanāvāryaṁ mumūrṣurmūḍhacetanaḥ.
12. tapantam iva kaḥ mandaḥ patiṣyati pataṅgavat
pāṇḍavāgnim anāvāryam mumūrṣuḥ mūḍhacetanaḥ
12. Who, then, so foolish and bewildered in mind (mūḍhacetana), would desire to die (mumūrṣuḥ) by falling like an insect into that irresistible Pāṇḍava-fire (pāṇḍavāgni)?
तनुरुच्चः शिखी राजा शुद्धजाम्बूनदप्रभः ।
मन्दानां मम पुत्राणां युद्धेनान्तं करिष्यति ॥१३॥
13. tanuruccaḥ śikhī rājā śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ ,
mandānāṁ mama putrāṇāṁ yuddhenāntaṁ kariṣyati.
13. tanuḥ uccaḥ śikhī rājā śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ
mandānām mama putrāṇām yuddhena antam kariṣyati
13. He is tall and has a topknot, a king who shines with the radiance of pure gold. He will bring about the end of my foolish sons through battle.
तैरयुद्धं साधु मन्ये कुरवस्तन्निबोधत ।
युद्धे विनाशः कृत्स्नस्य कुलस्य भविता ध्रुवम् ॥१४॥
14. tairayuddhaṁ sādhu manye kuravastannibodhata ,
yuddhe vināśaḥ kṛtsnasya kulasya bhavitā dhruvam.
14. taiḥ ayuddham sādhu manye kuravaḥ tat nibodhata
yuddhe vināśaḥ kṛtsnasya kulasya bhavitā dhruvam
14. I consider it proper not to fight with them. O Kurus, understand this: in war, the certain destruction of the entire lineage will occur.
एषा मे परमा शान्तिर्यया शाम्यति मे मनः ।
यदि त्वयुद्धमिष्टं वो वयं शान्त्यै यतामहे ॥१५॥
15. eṣā me paramā śāntiryayā śāmyati me manaḥ ,
yadi tvayuddhamiṣṭaṁ vo vayaṁ śāntyai yatāmahe.
15. eṣā me paramā śāntiḥ yayā śāmyati me manaḥ yadi
tu ayuddham iṣṭam vaḥ vayam śāntyai yatāmahe
15. This is my highest peace (śānti), by which my mind becomes calm. But if non-war is desired by you, then we will endeavor for peace (śānti).
न तु नः शिक्षमाणानामुपेक्षेत युधिष्ठिरः ।
जुगुप्सति ह्यधर्मेण मामेवोद्दिश्य कारणम् ॥१६॥
16. na tu naḥ śikṣamāṇānāmupekṣeta yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
jugupsati hyadharmeṇa māmevoddiśya kāraṇam.
16. na tu naḥ śikṣamāṇānām upekṣeta yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
jugupsati hi adharmeṇa mām eva uddiśya kāraṇam
16. But Yudhishthira would not disregard us, who are seeking instruction. For he truly detests unrighteousness (adharma), specifically making me the reason (for such conduct).
