मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः काले बहुतिथे व्यतिक्रान्ते कदाचन ।
प्राप्तः स कालो मर्तव्यं यत्र सत्यवता नृप ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tataḥ kāle bahutithe vyatikrānte kadācana ,
prāptaḥ sa kālo martavyaṁ yatra satyavatā nṛpa.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then, O king, after a significant amount of time had passed, that time arrived when Satyavān was destined to die."
गणयन्त्याश्च सावित्र्या दिवसे दिवसे गते ।
तद्वाक्यं नारदेनोक्तं वर्तते हृदि नित्यशः ॥२॥
2. gaṇayantyāśca sāvitryā divase divase gate ,
tadvākyaṁ nāradenoktaṁ vartate hṛdi nityaśaḥ.

tat vākyam nāradena uktam vartate hṛdi nityaśaḥ
2. As each day passed and Sāvitrī kept counting, the statement (vākya) spoken by Nārada remained perpetually in her heart (hṛd).
चतुर्थेऽहनि मर्तव्यमिति संचिन्त्य भामिनी ।
व्रतं त्रिरात्रमुद्दिश्य दिवारात्रं स्थिताभवत् ॥३॥
3. caturthe'hani martavyamiti saṁcintya bhāminī ,
vrataṁ trirātramuddiśya divārātraṁ sthitābhavat.
3. caturthe ahani martavyam iti saṃcintya bhāminī
vratam trirātram uddiśya divārātram sthitā abhavat
3. Thinking, "On the fourth day, I must die," the beautiful lady (bhāminī) undertook a vow for three nights and remained (awake) day and night.
तं श्रुत्वा नियमं दुःखं वध्वा दुःखान्वितो नृपः ।
उत्थाय वाक्यं सावित्रीमब्रवीत्परिसान्त्वयन् ॥४॥
4. taṁ śrutvā niyamaṁ duḥkhaṁ vadhvā duḥkhānvito nṛpaḥ ,
utthāya vākyaṁ sāvitrīmabravītparisāntvayan.
4. tam śrutvā niyamam duḥkham vadhvā duḥkhānvitaḥ
nṛpaḥ utthāya vākyam sāvitrīm abravīt parisāntvayan
4. Hearing about that difficult vow (niyama), the king, filled with sorrow for his daughter-in-law, rose and spoke comforting words to Sāvitrī.
अतितीव्रोऽयमारम्भस्त्वयारब्धो नृपात्मजे ।
तिसृणां वसतीनां हि स्थानं परमदुष्करम् ॥५॥
5. atitīvro'yamārambhastvayārabdho nṛpātmaje ,
tisṛṇāṁ vasatīnāṁ hi sthānaṁ paramaduṣkaram.
5. atitīvraḥ ayam ārambhaḥ tvayā ārabdhaḥ nṛpātmaje
tisṛṇām vasatīnām hi sthānam paramaduṣkaram
5. "This undertaking (ārambha), which is extremely severe, has been begun by you, O princess (nṛpātmajā). Indeed, remaining awake for three nights is extremely difficult."
सावित्र्युवाच ।
न कार्यस्तात संतापः पारयिष्याम्यहं व्रतम् ।
व्यवसायकृतं हीदं व्यवसायश्च कारणम् ॥६॥
6. sāvitryuvāca ,
na kāryastāta saṁtāpaḥ pārayiṣyāmyahaṁ vratam ,
vyavasāyakṛtaṁ hīdaṁ vyavasāyaśca kāraṇam.
6. sāvitrī uvāca na kāryaḥ tāta saṃtāpaḥ pārayiṣyāmi aham
vratam vyavasāyakṛtam hi idam vyavasāyaḥ ca kāraṇam
6. Sāvitrī said: "Father, there is no need for anxiety. I shall complete this vow. Indeed, this (vow) has been undertaken with determination (vyavasāya), and determination (vyavasāya) is the cause (of its success)."
द्युमत्सेन उवाच ।
व्रतं भिन्धीति वक्तुं त्वां नास्मि शक्तः कथंचन ।
पारयस्वेति वचनं युक्तमस्मद्विधो वदेत् ॥७॥
7. dyumatsena uvāca ,
vrataṁ bhindhīti vaktuṁ tvāṁ nāsmi śaktaḥ kathaṁcana ,
pārayasveti vacanaṁ yuktamasmadvidho vadet.
7. dyumatsenaḥ uvāca | vratam bhindhi
iti vaktum tvām na asmi śaktaḥ
kathaṃcana | pārayasva iti
vacanam yuktam asmadvidhaḥ vadet
7. Dyamatsena said: "I am certainly not able to tell you to break your vow (vrata). Instead, it is appropriate for someone like me to say, 'complete your vow.'"
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा द्युमत्सेनो विरराम महामनाः ।
तिष्ठन्ती चापि सावित्री काष्ठभूतेव लक्ष्यते ॥८॥
8. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamuktvā dyumatseno virarāma mahāmanāḥ ,
tiṣṭhantī cāpi sāvitrī kāṣṭhabhūteva lakṣyate.
8. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | evam uktvā dyumatsenaḥ virarāma
mahāmanāḥ | tiṣṭhantī ca api sāvitrī kāṣṭhabhūtā iva lakṣyate
8. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Having spoken thus, the noble-minded Dyamatsena ceased speaking. Sāvitrī, standing there, also appeared as if turned into a wooden statue."
श्वोभूते भर्तृमरणे सावित्र्या भरतर्षभ ।
दुःखान्वितायास्तिष्ठन्त्याः सा रात्रिर्व्यत्यवर्तत ॥९॥
9. śvobhūte bhartṛmaraṇe sāvitryā bharatarṣabha ,
duḥkhānvitāyāstiṣṭhantyāḥ sā rātrirvyatyavartata.
9. śvaḥbhūte bhartṛmaraṇe sāvitryāḥ bharatarṣabha |
duḥkhānvitāyāḥ tiṣṭhantyāḥ sā rātriḥ vyatyavartata
9. O best of the Bharatas, that night passed for Sāvitrī, who was filled with sorrow and standing [awake], as the next day was to be the day of her husband's death (maraṇa).
अद्य तद्दिवसं चेति हुत्वा दीप्तं हुताशनम् ।
युगमात्रोदिते सूर्ये कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकीः क्रियाः ॥१०॥
10. adya taddivasaṁ ceti hutvā dīptaṁ hutāśanam ,
yugamātrodite sūrye kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīḥ kriyāḥ.
10. adya tat divasam ca iti | hutvā dīptam hutāśanam
| yugamātrodite sūrye kṛtvā paurvāhṇikīḥ kriyāḥ
10. Thinking, "Today is that day," and after offering oblations into the blazing fire, and performing the morning rituals when the sun had risen only a short while (lit., by the measure of a yoke).
ततः सर्वान्द्विजान्वृद्धाञ्श्वश्रूं श्वशुरमेव च ।
अभिवाद्यानुपूर्व्येण प्राञ्जलिर्नियता स्थिता ॥११॥
11. tataḥ sarvāndvijānvṛddhāñśvaśrūṁ śvaśurameva ca ,
abhivādyānupūrvyeṇa prāñjalirniyatā sthitā.
11. tataḥ sarvān dvijān vṛddhān śvaśrūm śvaśuram eva
ca abhivādya anupūrvyena prāñjaliḥ niyatā sthitā
11. Thereafter, having bowed down to all the elderly twice-born (Brahmins) and also to her mother-in-law and father-in-law in due order, she stood there with folded hands, self-controlled.
अवैधव्याशिषस्ते तु सावित्र्यर्थं हिताः शुभाः ।
ऊचुस्तपस्विनः सर्वे तपोवननिवासिनः ॥१२॥
12. avaidhavyāśiṣaste tu sāvitryarthaṁ hitāḥ śubhāḥ ,
ūcustapasvinaḥ sarve tapovananivāsinaḥ.
12. avaidhavyāśiṣaḥ te tu sāvitryartham hitāḥ
śubhāḥ ūcuḥ tapasvinaḥ sarve tapovananivāsinaḥ
12. All those well-wishing and auspicious ascetics residing in the hermitage then offered blessings for Savitri's sake, wishing her to avoid widowhood (avaidhavyāśiṣaḥ).
एवमस्त्विति सावित्री ध्यानयोगपरायणा ।
मनसा ता गिरः सर्वाः प्रत्यगृह्णात्तपस्विनाम् ॥१३॥
13. evamastviti sāvitrī dhyānayogaparāyaṇā ,
manasā tā giraḥ sarvāḥ pratyagṛhṇāttapasvinām.
13. evam astu iti sāvitrī dhyānayogaparāyaṇā manasā
tāḥ giraḥ sarvāḥ prati agṛhṇāt tapasvinām
13. Savitri, who was wholly intent on the practice of meditation (dhyānayoga), mentally accepted all those words of the ascetics, thinking, 'So be it!'
तं कालं च मुहूर्तं च प्रतीक्षन्ती नृपात्मजा ।
यथोक्तं नारदवचश्चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखिता ॥१४॥
14. taṁ kālaṁ ca muhūrtaṁ ca pratīkṣantī nṛpātmajā ,
yathoktaṁ nāradavacaścintayantī suduḥkhitā.
14. tam kālam ca muhūrtam ca pratīkṣantī nṛpātmajā
yathā uktam nāradavacaḥ cintayantī suduḥkhitā
14. The king's daughter, Savitri, intensely distressed, was waiting for that time and that very moment, continually pondering the words spoken by Narada.
ततस्तु श्वश्रूश्वशुरावूचतुस्तां नृपात्मजाम् ।
एकान्तस्थामिदं वाक्यं प्रीत्या भरतसत्तम ॥१५॥
15. tatastu śvaśrūśvaśurāvūcatustāṁ nṛpātmajām ,
ekāntasthāmidaṁ vākyaṁ prītyā bharatasattama.
15. tataḥ tu śvaśrū śvaśurau ūcatuḥ tām nṛpātmajām
ekāntasthām idam vākyam prītyā bharatasattama
15. Then, O best of Bharatas, the mother-in-law and father-in-law affectionately spoke this statement to the princess (nṛpātmajā), who was sitting alone in seclusion.
श्वशुरावूचतुः ।
व्रतो यथोपदिष्टोऽयं यथावत्पारितस्त्वया ।
आहारकालः संप्राप्तः क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् ॥१६॥
16. śvaśurāvūcatuḥ ,
vrato yathopadiṣṭo'yaṁ yathāvatpāritastvayā ,
āhārakālaḥ saṁprāptaḥ kriyatāṁ yadanantaram.
16. śvaśurau ūcatuḥ vrataḥ yathā upadiṣṭaḥ ayam yathāvat
pāritaḥ tvayā āhārakālaḥ samprāptaḥ kriyatām yat anantaram
16. The mother-in-law and father-in-law said: "This vow (vrata), as instructed, has been properly completed by you. The time for the meal (āhāra) has arrived; let what follows be performed."
सावित्र्युवाच ।
अस्तं गते मयादित्ये भोक्तव्यं कृतकामया ।
एष मे हृदि संकल्पः समयश्च कृतो मया ॥१७॥
17. sāvitryuvāca ,
astaṁ gate mayāditye bhoktavyaṁ kṛtakāmayā ,
eṣa me hṛdi saṁkalpaḥ samayaśca kṛto mayā.
17. sāvitrī uvāca astam gate mayā āditye bhoktavyam
kṛtakāmayā eṣa me hṛdi saṃkalpaḥ samayaḥ ca kṛtaḥ mayā
17. Sāvitrī said: "After the sun (āditya) has set, I shall eat, my wish having been accomplished. This resolve (saṃkalpa) is in my heart, and this pledge has been made by me."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवं संभाषमाणायाः सावित्र्या भोजनं प्रति ।
स्कन्धे परशुमादाय सत्यवान्प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥१८॥
18. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇāyāḥ sāvitryā bhojanaṁ prati ,
skandhe paraśumādāya satyavānprasthito vanam.
18. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca evam saṃbhāṣamāṇāyāḥ sāvitryāḥ bhojanam
prati skandhe paraśum ādāya satyavān prasthitaḥ vanam
18. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "While Sāvitrī was thus speaking regarding the meal (bhojana), Satyavān took an axe (paraśu) on his shoulder and departed for the forest."
सावित्री त्वाह भर्तारं नैकस्त्वं गन्तुमर्हसि ।
सह त्वयागमिष्यामि न हि त्वां हातुमुत्सहे ॥१९॥
19. sāvitrī tvāha bhartāraṁ naikastvaṁ gantumarhasi ,
saha tvayāgamiṣyāmi na hi tvāṁ hātumutsahe.
19. Sāvitrī tu āha bhartāram na ekaḥ tvam gantum arhasi
| saha tvayā āgamiṣyāmi na hi tvām hātum utsahe
19. Sāvitrī said to her husband, "You should not go alone. I will come with you, for indeed, I cannot bear to abandon you."
सत्यवानुवाच ।
वनं न गतपूर्वं ते दुःखः पन्थाश्च भामिनि ।
व्रतोपवासक्षामा च कथं पद्भ्यां गमिष्यसि ॥२०॥
20. satyavānuvāca ,
vanaṁ na gatapūrvaṁ te duḥkhaḥ panthāśca bhāmini ,
vratopavāsakṣāmā ca kathaṁ padbhyāṁ gamiṣyasi.
20. Satyavān uvāca | vanam na gata-pūrvam te duḥkhaḥ panthāḥ ca
bhāmini | vrata-upavāsa-kṣāmā ca katham padbhyām gamiṣyasi
20. Satyavān said, "You have never been to the forest, and the path is difficult, oh beautiful one. Moreover, you are emaciated from vows and fasting, so how will you go on foot?"
सावित्र्युवाच ।
उपवासान्न मे ग्लानिर्नास्ति चापि परिश्रमः ।
गमने च कृतोत्साहां प्रतिषेद्धुं न मार्हसि ॥२१॥
21. sāvitryuvāca ,
upavāsānna me glānirnāsti cāpi pariśramaḥ ,
gamane ca kṛtotsāhāṁ pratiṣeddhuṁ na mārhasi.
21. Sāvitrī uvāca | upavāsāt na me glāniḥ na asti ca api
pariśramaḥ | gamane ca kṛta-utsāhām pratiṣeddhum na ma arhasi
21. Sāvitrī said, "I have no fatigue from fasting, nor is there any weariness. You should not prevent me, who am so eager to go."
सत्यवानुवाच ।
यदि ते गमनोत्साहः करिष्यामि तव प्रियम् ।
मम त्वामन्त्रय गुरून्न मां दोषः स्पृशेदयम् ॥२२॥
22. satyavānuvāca ,
yadi te gamanotsāhaḥ kariṣyāmi tava priyam ,
mama tvāmantraya gurūnna māṁ doṣaḥ spṛśedayam.
22. Satyavān uvāca | yadi te gamana-utsāhaḥ kariṣyāmi tava
priyam | mama tu āmantraya gurūn na mām doṣaḥ spṛśet ayam
22. Satyavān said, "If you are eager to go, I will do what is pleasing to you. But first, take leave of your elders (guru), so that this fault does not affect me."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
साभिगम्याब्रवीच्छ्वश्रूं श्वशुरं च महाव्रता ।
अयं गच्छति मे भर्ता फलाहारो महावनम् ॥२३॥
23. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
sābhigamyābravīcchvaśrūṁ śvaśuraṁ ca mahāvratā ,
ayaṁ gacchati me bhartā phalāhāro mahāvanam.
23. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca sā abhigamya abravīt śvaśrūm śvaśuram ca
mahāvratā ayam gacchati me bhartā phalāhāraḥ mahāvanam
23. Markandeya said: Approaching her mother-in-law and father-in-law, the greatly virtuous woman spoke, saying, "My husband, who subsists on fruits, is going to the great forest."
इच्छेयमभ्यनुज्ञातुमार्यया श्वशुरेण च ।
अनेन सह निर्गन्तुं न हि मे विरहः क्षमः ॥२४॥
24. iccheyamabhyanujñātumāryayā śvaśureṇa ca ,
anena saha nirgantuṁ na hi me virahaḥ kṣamaḥ.
24. iccheyam abhyanujñātum āryayā śvaśureṇa ca
anena saha nirgantum na hi me virahaḥ kṣamaḥ
24. I would wish to be permitted by my respected mother-in-law and father-in-law to go forth with him, for separation from him is not tolerable for me.
गुर्वग्निहोत्रार्थकृते प्रस्थितश्च सुतस्तव ।
न निवार्यो निवार्यः स्यादन्यथा प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥२५॥
25. gurvagnihotrārthakṛte prasthitaśca sutastava ,
na nivāryo nivāryaḥ syādanyathā prasthito vanam.
25. guru agnihotra artha kṛte prasthitaḥ ca sutaḥ tava
na nivāryaḥ nivāryaḥ syāt anyathā prasthitaḥ vanam
25. Your son has set out to gather materials for the important (guru's) Agnihotra ritual. He should not be prevented. He would only be prevented if he were going to the forest for some other reason.
संवत्सरः किंचिदूनो न निष्क्रान्ताहमाश्रमात् ।
वनं कुसुमितं द्रष्टुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥२६॥
26. saṁvatsaraḥ kiṁcidūno na niṣkrāntāhamāśramāt ,
vanaṁ kusumitaṁ draṣṭuṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me.
26. saṃvatsaraḥ kiṃcit ūnaḥ na niṣkrāntā aham āśramāt
vanam kusumitam draṣṭum param kautūhalam hi me
26. A year, minus a little, has passed, and I have not left the hermitage (āśrama). Indeed, I have a great desire to see the flowering forest.
द्युमत्सेन उवाच ।
यतः प्रभृति सावित्री पित्रा दत्ता स्नुषा मम ।
नानयाभ्यर्थनायुक्तमुक्तपूर्वं स्मराम्यहम् ॥२७॥
27. dyumatsena uvāca ,
yataḥ prabhṛti sāvitrī pitrā dattā snuṣā mama ,
nānayābhyarthanāyuktamuktapūrvaṁ smarāmyaham.
27. dyumatsena uvāca yataḥ prabhṛti sāvitrī pitrā dattā snuṣā
mama na anayā abhyarthanāyuktam uktapūrvam smarāmi aham
27. Dyumatsena said: "Since Savitri was given by her father as my daughter-in-law, I do not remember her ever having spoken anything previously that was an inappropriate request."
तदेषा लभतां कामं यथाभिलषितं वधूः ।
अप्रमादश्च कर्तव्यः पुत्रि सत्यवतः पथि ॥२८॥
28. tadeṣā labhatāṁ kāmaṁ yathābhilaṣitaṁ vadhūḥ ,
apramādaśca kartavyaḥ putri satyavataḥ pathi.
28. tat eṣā labhatām kāmam yathābhilaṣitam vadhūḥ
apramādaḥ ca kartavyaḥ putri satyavataḥ pathi
28. "Therefore, let this bride obtain her desire as she has wished. And, my daughter, vigilance (apramāda) must be maintained in Satyavat's way of life."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
उभाभ्यामभ्यनुज्ञाता सा जगाम यशस्विनी ।
सह भर्त्रा हसन्तीव हृदयेन विदूयता ॥२९॥
29. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ubhābhyāmabhyanujñātā sā jagāma yaśasvinī ,
saha bhartrā hasantīva hṛdayena vidūyatā.
29. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ubhābhyām abhyanujñātā sā jagāma
yaśasvinī saha bhartrā hasantī iva hṛdayena vidūyatā
29. Markandeya said: "Having been given permission by both (her mother and father-in-law), the renowned (yaśasvinī) Savitri went forth. She was with her husband, and though seemingly laughing, her heart (hṛdaya) was deeply pained."
सा वनानि विचित्राणि रमणीयानि सर्वशः ।
मयूररवघुष्टानि ददर्श विपुलेक्षणा ॥३०॥
30. sā vanāni vicitrāṇi ramaṇīyāni sarvaśaḥ ,
mayūraravaghuṣṭāni dadarśa vipulekṣaṇā.
30. sā vanāni vicitrāṇi ramaṇīyāni sarvaśaḥ
mayūra-rava-ghuṣṭāni dadarśa vipulekṣaṇā
30. The broad-eyed (vipulekṣaṇā) Savitri observed the forests everywhere, which were diverse, charming, and resounding with the cries of peacocks.
नदीः पुण्यवहाश्चैव पुष्पितांश्च नगोत्तमान् ।
सत्यवानाह पश्येति सावित्रीं मधुराक्षरम् ॥३१॥
31. nadīḥ puṇyavahāścaiva puṣpitāṁśca nagottamān ,
satyavānāha paśyeti sāvitrīṁ madhurākṣaram.
31. nadīḥ puṇyavahāḥ ca eva puṣpitān ca nagottamān
satyavān āha paśya iti sāvitrīm madhurākṣaram
31. Satyavān, with sweet words, said to Sāvitrī, "Look at these merit-bestowing rivers and the excellent blooming trees."
निरीक्षमाणा भर्तारं सर्वावस्थमनिन्दिता ।
मृतमेव हि तं मेने काले मुनिवचः स्मरन् ॥३२॥
32. nirīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṁ sarvāvasthamaninditā ,
mṛtameva hi taṁ mene kāle munivacaḥ smaran.
32. nirīkṣamāṇā bhartāram sarvāvastham aninditā
mṛtam eva hi tam mene kāle munivacaḥ smaran
32. The faultless Sāvitrī, looking upon her husband in that complete state (of unconsciousness or death), indeed considered him dead, remembering the sage's words at that time.
अनुवर्तती तु भर्तारं जगाम मृदुगामिनी ।
द्विधेव हृदयं कृत्वा तं च कालमवेक्षती ॥३३॥
33. anuvartatī tu bhartāraṁ jagāma mṛdugāminī ,
dvidheva hṛdayaṁ kṛtvā taṁ ca kālamavekṣatī.
33. anuvartatī tu bhartāram jagāma mṛdugāminī
dvidhā iva hṛdayam kṛtvā tam ca kālam avekṣatī
33. But the softly-treading Sāvitrī followed her husband, with her heart as if split in two, and observing that appointed time (of death).
