वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तत एनमुपातिष्ठञ्शौचार्थं परिचारकाः ।
कृतशौचं पुनश्चैनं प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tata enamupātiṣṭhañśaucārthaṁ paricārakāḥ ,
kṛtaśaucaṁ punaścainaṁ provāca madhusūdanaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then his attendants approached him for the sake of purification. And after he had purified himself, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) spoke to him again.
राजन्नधीता वेदास्ते शास्त्राणि विविधानि च ।
श्रुतानि च पुराणानि राजधर्माश्च केवलाः ॥२॥
2. rājannadhītā vedāste śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca ,
śrutāni ca purāṇāni rājadharmāśca kevalāḥ.
2. rājan adhītāḥ vedāḥ te śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca
śrutāni ca purāṇāni rājadharmāḥ ca kevalāḥ
2. rājan te vedāḥ vividhāni śāstrāṇi ca adhītāḥ
purāṇāni ca kevalāḥ rājadharmāḥ ca śrutāni
2. O King, you have studied the Vedas and various scriptures; you have also heard the Purāṇas and all the royal duties (dharma).
एवं विद्वान्महाप्राज्ञ नाकार्षीर्वचनं तदा ।
पाण्डवानधिकाञ्जानन्बले शौर्ये च कौरव ॥३॥
3. evaṁ vidvānmahāprājña nākārṣīrvacanaṁ tadā ,
pāṇḍavānadhikāñjānanbale śaurye ca kaurava.
3. evam vidvān mahāprājña na akārṣīḥ vacanam tadā
pāṇḍavān adhikān jānan bale śaurye ca kaurava
3. mahāprājña kaurava evam vidvān tadā pāṇḍavān
bale śaurye ca adhikān jānan vacanam na akārṣīḥ
3. Even though you are such a learned and greatly wise person, O scion of Kuru, you did not heed that advice at that time, even while knowing that the Pāṇḍavas were superior in strength and valor.
राजा हि यः स्थिरप्रज्ञः स्वयं दोषानवेक्षते ।
देशकालविभागं च परं श्रेयः स विन्दति ॥४॥
4. rājā hi yaḥ sthiraprajñaḥ svayaṁ doṣānavekṣate ,
deśakālavibhāgaṁ ca paraṁ śreyaḥ sa vindati.
4. rājā hi yaḥ sthiraprajñaḥ svayam doṣān avekṣate
deśakālavibhāgam ca param śreyaḥ saḥ vindati
4. hi yaḥ rājā sthiraprajñaḥ svayam doṣān
deśakālavibhāgam ca avekṣate saḥ param śreyaḥ vindati
4. Indeed, the king who is firm in his wisdom and himself discerns faults and the appropriate considerations of time and place, he attains the highest well-being.
उच्यमानं च यः श्रेयो गृह्णीते नो हिताहिते ।
आपदं समनुप्राप्य स शोचत्यनये स्थितः ॥५॥
5. ucyamānaṁ ca yaḥ śreyo gṛhṇīte no hitāhite ,
āpadaṁ samanuprāpya sa śocatyanaye sthitaḥ.
5. ucyamānam ca yaḥ śreyaḥ gṛhṇīte na u hitāhite
āpadam samanuprāpya saḥ śocati anaye sthitaḥ
5. ca yaḥ ucyamānam śreyaḥ na gṛhṇīte u hitāhite
saḥ āpadam samanuprāpya anaye sthitaḥ śocati
5. And he who does not accept the beneficial advice being offered, failing to discern what is advantageous and what is detrimental (hita-ahita), that person, having fallen into calamity, laments, remaining in a wrongful state.
ततोऽन्यवृत्तमात्मानं समवेक्षस्व भारत ।
राजंस्त्वं ह्यविधेयात्मा दुर्योधनवशे स्थितः ॥६॥
6. tato'nyavṛttamātmānaṁ samavekṣasva bhārata ,
rājaṁstvaṁ hyavidheyātmā duryodhanavaśe sthitaḥ.
6. tataḥ anyavṛttam ātmānam samavekṣasva bhārata
rājan tvam hi avidheyātmā duryodhanavaśe sthitaḥ
6. bhārata rājan tvam hi avidheyātmā duryodhanavaśe sthitaḥ,
tataḥ ātmānam anyavṛttam samavekṣasva
6. Therefore, O Bhārata, examine your self (ātman), which has adopted a different course of action. For you, O King, have an uncontrollable nature and are indeed under the sway of Duryodhana.
आत्मापराधादायस्तस्तत्किं भीमं जिघांससि ।
तस्मात्संयच्छ कोपं त्वं स्वमनुस्मृत्य दुष्कृतम् ॥७॥
7. ātmāparādhādāyastastatkiṁ bhīmaṁ jighāṁsasi ,
tasmātsaṁyaccha kopaṁ tvaṁ svamanusmṛtya duṣkṛtam.
7. ātmāparādhāt āyastaḥ tat kim bhīmam jighāṃsasi
tasmāt saṃyaccha kopam tvam svam anusmṛtya duṣkṛtam
7. tvam ātmāparādhāt āyastaḥ tat kim bhīmam jighāṃsasi? tasmāt svam duṣkṛtam anusmṛtya kopam saṃyaccha.
7. Distressed by your own offense, why do you wish to kill Bhīma? Therefore, remembering your own misdeed, you should restrain your anger.
यस्तु तां स्पर्धया क्षुद्रः पाञ्चालीमानयत्सभाम् ।
स हतो भीमसेनेन वैरं प्रतिचिकीर्षता ॥८॥
8. yastu tāṁ spardhayā kṣudraḥ pāñcālīmānayatsabhām ,
sa hato bhīmasenena vairaṁ praticikīrṣatā.
8. yaḥ tu tām spardhayā kṣudraḥ pāñcālīm ānayat
sabhām saḥ hataḥ bhīmasenena vairam praticikīrṣatā
8. yaḥ tu kṣudraḥ स्पर्धया ताम् पाञ्चालीम् सभाम् आनयत्,
सः वैरम् प्रतिचिकीर्षता भीमसेनेन हतः।
8. But that wretched person who, out of rivalry, brought Pāñcālī (Draupadī) into the assembly, has been killed by Bhīmasena, who was intent on seeking vengeance.
आत्मनोऽतिक्रमं पश्य पुत्रस्य च दुरात्मनः ।
यदनागसि पाण्डूनां परित्यागः परंतप ॥९॥
9. ātmano'tikramaṁ paśya putrasya ca durātmanaḥ ,
yadanāgasi pāṇḍūnāṁ parityāgaḥ paraṁtapa.
9. ātmanaḥ atikramam paśya putrasya ca durātmanaḥ
yat anāgasi pāṇḍūnām parityāgaḥ paraṃtapa
9. परंतप आत्मनः च दुरात्मनः पुत्रस्य अतिक्रमम् पश्य,
यत् पाण्डूनाम् अनागसि परित्यागः।
9. Observe your own transgression and that of your wicked son, O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), for it was the abandonment of the innocent Pāṇḍavas.
एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन सर्वं सत्यं जनाधिप ।
उवाच देवकीपुत्रं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ॥१०॥
10. evamuktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena sarvaṁ satyaṁ janādhipa ,
uvāca devakīputraṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ.
10. evam uktaḥ saḥ kṛṣṇena sarvam satyam janādhipa
uvāca devakīputram dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpatiḥ
10. janādhipa,
mahīpatiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ kṛṣṇena evam uktaḥ (san) devakīputram (prati) sarvam satyam uvāca
10. O lord of men, King Dhritarashtra, having been addressed thus by Krishna, then spoke the complete truth to Devaki's son (Krishna).
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि माधव ।
पुत्रस्नेहस्तु धर्मात्मन्धैर्यान्मां समचालयत् ॥११॥
11. evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi mādhava ,
putrasnehastu dharmātmandhairyānmāṁ samacālayat.
11. evam etat mahābāho yathā vadasi mādhava
putrasnehaḥ tu dharmātman dhairyāt mām samacālayat
11. mahābāho mādhava,
yathā (tvam) vadasi,
evam etat (asti) tu dharmātman,
putrasnehaḥ mām dhairyāt samacālayat
11. O mighty-armed Mādhava, what you say is indeed true. But, O virtuous one whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness, my affection for my sons caused me to deviate from my firmness.
दिष्ट्या तु पुरुषव्याघ्रो बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
त्वद्गुप्तो नागमत्कृष्ण भीमो बाह्वन्तरं मम ॥१२॥
12. diṣṭyā tu puruṣavyāghro balavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
tvadgupto nāgamatkṛṣṇa bhīmo bāhvantaraṁ mama.
12. diṣṭyā tu puruṣavyāghraḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ
tvatguptaḥ na āgamat kṛṣṇa bhīmaḥ bāhvantaram mama
12. kṛṣṇa,
diṣṭyā tu,
tvatguptaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ bhīmaḥ mama bāhvantaram na āgamat
12. But fortunately, O Krishna, that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), the powerful Bhīma, whose valor is true, protected by you, did not come into my embrace.
इदानीं त्वहमेकाग्रो गतमन्युर्गतज्वरः ।
मध्यमं पाण्डवं वीरं स्प्रष्टुमिच्छामि केशव ॥१३॥
13. idānīṁ tvahamekāgro gatamanyurgatajvaraḥ ,
madhyamaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ vīraṁ spraṣṭumicchāmi keśava.
13. idānīm tu aham ekāgraḥ gatamanjuḥ gatajvaraḥ
madhyamam pāṇḍavam vīram spraṣṭum icchāmi keśava
13. keśava,
idānīm tu aham ekāgraḥ gatamanjuḥ gatajvaraḥ (san) madhyamam vīram pāṇḍavam spraṣṭum icchāmi
13. Now, however, O Keśava, I am single-minded, free from anger, and free from distress. I desire to embrace the heroic middle Pāṇḍava (Bhīma).
हतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु पुत्रेषु निहतेषु च ।
पाण्डुपुत्रेषु मे शर्म प्रीतिश्चाप्यवतिष्ठते ॥१४॥
14. hateṣu pārthivendreṣu putreṣu nihateṣu ca ,
pāṇḍuputreṣu me śarma prītiścāpyavatiṣṭhate.
14. hateṣu pārthivendreṣu putreṣu nihateṣu ca
pāṇḍuputreṣu me śarma prītiḥ ca api avatiṣṭhate
14. me putreṣu pārthivendreṣu hateṣu ca nihateṣu ca api,
pāṇḍuputreṣu śarma ca prītiḥ ca avatiṣṭhate
14. Even though my own sons, the chief among kings, have been killed and slain, still, happiness and affection (prīti) for me remain with the sons of Pāṇḍu.
ततः स भीमं च धनंजयं च माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ ।
पस्पर्श गात्रैः प्ररुदन्सुगात्रानाश्वास्य कल्याणमुवाच चैनान् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa bhīmaṁ ca dhanaṁjayaṁ ca; mādryāśca putrau puruṣapravīrau ,
pasparśa gātraiḥ prarudansugātrā;nāśvāsya kalyāṇamuvāca cainān.
15. tataḥ saḥ bhīmam ca dhanañjayam ca
mādryāḥ ca putrau puruṣapravīrau
pasparśa gātraiḥ prarudan sugātrān
āśvāsya kalyāṇam uvāca ca enān
15. tataḥ saḥ prarudan gātraiḥ bhīmam ca dhanañjayam ca mādryāḥ ca puruṣapravīrau putrau sugātrān pasparśa.
[saḥ] enān āśvāsya ca kalyāṇam uvāca.
15. Then, profusely weeping, he (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) touched with his body Bhīma, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), and the two sons of Mādrī, those foremost among men, who had beautiful bodies. After consoling them, he spoke words of well-being to them.
